MAP: Santorini, Greece Location

The island of Santorini is located in the Cyclades islands, close by to the islands of Ios, Sikinos, Folegandros and Amorgos. The island is served by many ferries passing through the Cyclades. Many fast ferries pass by Santorini, such as the high-speed ferry to Crete.

Is a Day Trip to Santorini Worth It?

In my opinion, a day trip to Santorini is definitely worth-it. If you have more time to spare, it is worth staying in Santorini, even if it’s for a short time. The island should be high on your European bucket list.

Ensure that the ferry schedules allow for a reasonable amount of time on the island. You will need at least 5 hours and much more if possible. If you can, arrive in Santorini in the morning and stay until sunset.

Use the search bar below to check if the ferry schedules work during your dates:

A day trip to Santorini can either be done independently by catching buses or arranging your own transfers OR as part of an organised bus tour around the island. This post covers precisely how to make an independent day trip to Santorini. Guided trips to Santorini can be booked on Get Your Guide here.

Santorni 1 Day Itinerary

If you’re going on a day trip to Santorini, or you have just one day in Santorini, we’ve got you covered with this fantastic itinerary!

Morning: Arrive in Santorini and travel to Oia via Fira

When planning your trip to Greece, you can book your ferry tickets online through  Ferry Hopper . Ferries to Santorini often get booked up, so make sure you book in advance.

If you arrive in Santorini by ferry, you’ll arrive at Santorini’s new port, also known as Athinios port, backed with massive cliffs. Your first stop is Oia, world-famous for its cliffside villas, the best in the world sunset.

The cheapest and most efficient way of getting to Oia from Santorini’s new port is by bus. To do this, you’ll have to change buses in Fira, Santorini’s central bus hub.

How to get from Athinos port to Oia

  • Take the bus to Fira. Buses are run by KTEL and meet each ferry. The bus will cost €2.30 and take 20 minutes. Once you’re in Fira, change buses to get to Oia. Buses from Fira to Oia run every 30 minutes in high season and take 30 minutes to reach Oia. The trip will cost you €1.60. Click here to view bus timetables for your dates.
  • To reach Oia fast, you can book a private transfer in advance to save the bus change. Welcome Pickups offers a great experience and safety to its travellers.- Local English-speaking drivers- Flat, pre-paid fee- Flight monitoring for delays- 24/7 Customer support + free cancellation

Arriving into Santorini by Cruise Ship: How to Get from Santorini Old Port to Fira

If you’re arriving in Santorini on a cruise, you’ll have less distance to travel as the old port (cruise ship port) is in Fira. To reach Fira from Santorini old port, you have three options:

  • Take the cable car up to Fira. A ticket cost €6 each way and more if you plan on bringing luggage. You can check schedules and prices here.
  • Walk up the 580 steps from Santorini old port to Fira.
  • Take a donkey ride up the steps. A ride will cost around €8

Oia is located in the far North of the island. It’s the village often pictured in images of Santorini all over the word. The town features picturesque Cycladic style blue-domed churches and white stone buildings. Oia hangs off the edge of the island’s caldera, giving fabulous views out to sea and making the area a photographer’s paradise.

Top things to do in Oia, Santorini

Take in the view – The view of Oia’s caldera is the most famous in Greece. You could spend hours taking it in. To reach the view from the bus stop, follow the winding steps and lanes uphill, and you’ll come to a shopping street with fabulous caldera views.

See how many blue churches you can find – The blue dome on top of the whitewashed Cycladic churches is an icon. Churches make up quite a bit of the postcard shots of Oia. There are so many to be explored near the caldera and deep into the village.

Watch the Sunset – The sunset in Oia is one of the world’s most famous. The views out into the caldera and how the sun reflects onto the whitewashed buildings are definitely something you’ll remember forever. To do this, you’ll need to stay overnight in Santorini. You can either travel by bus or join an organised sunset tour.

Shop for souvenirs around the winding streets – I always find Greece the perfect place to buy souvenirs, from local delicacies of wine, greek herbs and ouzo to homemade pottery and crafts. You’ll definitely find some excellent gifts.

Bus from Oia to Kamari via Fira

First, to reach Kamari from Oia, take the bus back to Fira. The journey will take 30 minutes – with stunning views along the way and cost €1.60. Once in Fira, change buses to Kamari.

Buses from Fira to Kamari often meet the bus coming from Oia. You shouldn’t have to wait more than 15 minutes. The bus from Fira to Kamari takes 20 minutes and cost €1.60.

Once you’ve arrived at Kamari, simply turn left from the bus station and walk down the shopping street. This will take you to the sea.

The star attraction of Kamari is the beautiful black sand beach. The beach is wide and long, boasting many amenities like water sports, rows of sun loungers and plenty of tavernas.

Top things to do in Kamari, Santorini

Food with a view – The street running alongside Kamari beach is packed with a massive variety of tavernas and cafes. Take your pick and enjoy some excellent local cuisine.

Enjoy some time on Kamari beach – Being a black sand beach, Kamari beach is a somewhat different experience from other beaches in Greece. The beach is formed of volcanic pebbles and backed with high cliffs. Even if you just put out a towel for an hour – it’s definitely an experience you won’t forget.

Take a dip – After all the sightseeing, why not cool down with a dip in the sea?

Souvenir shopping – The road from the bus stop to Kamari beachfront is lined with hundreds of souvenir shops. Prices a cheaper than elsewhere in Santorini, so grab a bargain!

Bus from Kamari back to Fira + Exploring Fira

Fira is the capital of Santorini, so there’s plenty to do here. The bus from Kamari to Fira will cost €1.60 and take 20 minutes. If you’re short on time, an absolute must do is to see the caldera views in Fira old town.

I recommend getting ice cream to keep you cool and take in the views. Alternatively, you could grab a bite to eat or a cocktail from one of the cliffside bars. Simply walk all the way uphill, and you’ll reach the caldera.

Fira caldera, santorini, Santorini day trip, Santorini in one day

Bus from Fira back to Santorini New Port

Buses from Fira to Santorini port usually meet the ferries. Schedules are released each week and posted on the board at the bus station. The bus will cost €2.30 and take 20 minutes. Alternatively, you could book a private transfer from Fira to the new port to meet your ferry.

Once at the port, there are plenty of snack shops and cafes if you have a wait.

Now it’s time to say goodbye to Santorini after a fabulous day trip. Safe travels!

Staying overnight in Santorini | Best places to stay

Our recommendation: anessis apartments , fira.

We chose to stay at the Anessis Apartments for 2 nights as part of our travels around Greece this summer . Anessis is just a minute’s walk away from Fira’s bus station, where buses run all over the island. You can also walk to the centre of Fira within 5-10 minutes for the fantastic caldera views and sunset.

The apartments are suitable for most traveller types, especially couples and families. Rooms sleep 2-3 adults + kids, depending on the room chosen. We had a fantastic experience staying with a baby. The triple rooms often come with a lovely ground-floor outside area with views across the island and an impressive sunrise in the morning.

Other fantastic places to stay in Santorini include Perivelos, Oia and Fira. You’ll find fantastic hotels, some even with private pools! Make sure you book in advance as accommodation in Santorini often sells out.

This is my first time flying Aegean Air and I had a great first time experience. I will fly this airline again.

There was not any food and I didn't use the entertainment

Just ok. No much of a great travel experience. If you need point A to B they are ok.

More leg room, great if crew could move people before flight (ie if 3 in a row, offer to move 1 or 2 to an empty 3 seat row rather than let people move themselves after takeoff

Very bad experience during the boarding, the Aegean employees were very rude, and impatient with the passengers

Θα πρέπει να υπάρχει εστίαση στη γρήγορη και εύκολη επιβίβαση/αποβίβαση

Flight was late, boarding totally chaotic, seat uncomfortable, food good, attendants and pilots good.

Priority transfer bag left behind in Amsterdam causing extreme difficulty and inconvenience on arrival destination Athens

On top of the two hours delay in the airport, we needed to go by the bus to the terminal in Athens, Aegean is the aviation of Greece and they whole flight is 50 minutes.

Excellent apart from transport to actual plane 10 minutes from the actual gate , walking out in the tarmac in the rain and having to climb stairs to enter while holding luggage.

They wanted to close counter although they did not provide the wheelchair requested which ended by going alone to transit security and lost long time and they did not want to wait .

They charge me for luggage which is was included on the ticket

Good aorcraft 777 but Worst food ever Breakfast was a bû’with matonnaise… Staff was nice but invisible most of the flight

Everything went smoothly with Air France. There was a delay in departure which seemed to relate to the immigration services being short staffed.

Food could have been better especially the breakfast. Overall it was a good flight

No bording was given for next trip on same carrier, food was very moderate.

Lost luggage, 2 bags were badly damaged and one of the bags came open.

A couple of minor delays in boarding but very professional and efficient staff.

Even though my seat is a paid seat, I was told to give up my seat to a passenger. I tried to ask the CA to negotiate, and when I spoke in Japanese, the CA fled. I had to find a Japanese CA and ask them to deal with it. . After takeoff, I spilled my coffee, and when I asked the flight attendant for a towel, she told me to wipe it off with a wet tissue. My clothes got wet, so I asked CA for an extra blanket, but I had to wait for an hour.

Being on time rather than almost 3 hours late would be a start, and also, since it was known from a long time ago that the flight would be late, letting us know ahead so we don’t stay in a small hall at the airport would have been nice

Transit through Cairo was abysmal and I will never repeat this journey !!!

Être avertie SMS/mail du retard/changements d'horaire avant les 5min du décollage initial..

There was a delay of more than an hour due to technical issues on a previous flight, can happen so I don't foult the airline for that. The crew was excellent and very friendly and boarding was pretty efficient. The seats were comfortable enough. However, if you are over 1,80m, don't expect any room for your legs, the room between the rows is extremely tight!

As there are a lot of persons for the boarding and as you open the two doors of the plane, could be ingenious to ask the persons who have the first numbers (for the seats) to enter via the front door and those you are more at the end of the plane to enter by the other door. This would avoid to have passengers who entes by the front door and have to go to the back with luggages. Crazy and waste of time.

There was delay of 2 hours and all related announcements at the gate were done in French. It is not acceptable on international flight! The sandwich that I paid €6 for, was dry, hard and impossible to eat it. This is really a shame for French airline serving such sandwich.

Cancelled while we were waiting at the airport and the flight ready for boarding because of only one Stewart missing! Unacceptable! We were proposed another flight: 5 days later! Unacceptable! We had to pay other tickets of course very expensive the same day!

Your nasty smart , The seat too tight You have to pay for everything 5h20 min Flight with no food no water nothing .I didnt take my Medicine Because I don't have no water The worst trip that I have in my life.1st time flying with Transavia its going to be the last time . I am so disappointed

Day Trip to Santorini from Crete, Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, & Athens

Getting to Santorini for Day Trip

This is the ferry from Crete to Santorini that you would take for a day trip. (Day trip ferries from Naxos, Paros, and Ios would be similar and dock at the same port.) After you arrive in Santorini you still need to get up the cliff to the main caldera towns.

Day trips to Santorini from Athens and Mykonos require flying. Try to book the earliest and latest flights. Rent a car from the Santorini airport and explore the island. Depending on the flights available you might have as much as 12 hours to see the sights. Day trips to Santorini from Crete, Naxos, Paros, and other Greek islands are usually not worth the time and effort. Staying on Santorini for several nights is awesome. Visiting for a few hours in the middle of the day (on a day trip) is busy – though still definitely worth it for many visitors. Just about all of the best tours and things to do in Santorini require staying overnight. There is not enough time to do the top attractions when you visit on a day trip from another island. Ferry schedules are inconsistent and ferries are often late, or are cancelled or delayed. Even under perfect conditions a day trip to Santorini will rarely allow more than 4 or 5 hours on the island. It’s difficult to experience any of the best things to do on a day trip.

Is a day trip to Santorini worth it?

Generally, no. It’s much better to spend that time on the island that you’re currently staying on and use it to explore there. But can you have a great day while doing a day trip to Santorini? For sure. I would just set your expectations to the lower end of the scale. If you think you’re going to get to do a boat tour of the caldera (highly recommended), a wine tour of the best Santorini wineries (highly recommended), or hike from Fira to Oia along the caldera (highly recommended) then you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re thinking, hey, we’ll take a ferry to Santorini, walk around a for a few hours, get some good views and photos of the caldera, and be back to our home base by early evening, then yes, you could have a great day trip. As I say, just don’t have sky-high expectations for what you’re going to be able to do in one day.

Why is a day trip to Santorini so difficult? It looks easy enough.

The main difficulty is the ferries and the ferry schedule. They usually don’t allow enough time on Santorini to make travel times worth the effort. It’s different for every island, every month, and every year, but for most schedules you can catch an early morning ferry that will get you to Santorini around 11am. Then you need to catch a bus to Fira or taxi to Fira, Oia, or Imerovigli. This will take 30+ minutes and it will likely be noon before you’ve made your way to the caldera and are looking out into the caldera. The last ferry returning to your island could be anytime between 4pm and 8pm. Let’s say it’s 6pm. If you’re catching the bus it will probably leave for the port at 4:30 so you’ll need to head back to the bus station at about 4:00. In this scenario you’ve had 4 hours to explore Santorini. Not nothing and it could certainly be an enjoyable 4 hours. But, as I say, it’s a lot of time and effort for a pretty short visit.

My Recommendation: An Overnight Day Trip

Instead of making a day trip try to spend a night on Santorini. Don’t check out of your hotel on your home base island (too much of a hassle). Pack a small bag with just a few necessities for an overnight stay at a cheap Santorini hotel . This will expand your time on Santorini from 5 or 6 hours to almost 30 hours all for just an extra €50 to €100 (the hotel cost). Yes, you are “wasting” the hotel night you’re spending on your home base island. But it’s worth it for the ease, convenience, and extra time you’ll get on Santorini. Of course, even better is to include Santorini in part of your plans and spend 3 to 7 nights here. But assuming that’s not possible, an “overnight day trip” is much better than just the few hours you’ll get if you do a normal Santorini day trip.

Day Trip from Santorini to Nearby Islands

The same factors apply for day trips from Santorini as for day trips to Santorini. It’s hard to make a day trip from Santorini to other Greek islands worthwhile. If you’re interested in visiting other islands then try to spend at least one or two nights there rather than do a day trip.

About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave Author Bio.

Hi Dave! We are traveling from Mykonos to Santorini for an overnight trip on June 12. We plan to take the Hellenic Flying Cat 4 ferry because it departs at around 930 AM and will give us most of the day to sightsee in Santorini. We depart the next morning via a flight to Athens. I’ve read your ferry information and realize you recommend the high-speed 7, but it doesn’t depart until noon. Is it better to lose a few daylight hours and opt for the later departure? I’m worried about a rough ride. Thanks!

' src=

The Flying Cat will have a rougher ride but if you can handle it then I think it’s worth doing the earlier ferry to get the extra time on Santorini. It’s a pretty short trip. Go to the bathroom and get snacks before departure so you can stay in your seat. Standing up and walking about is what can really trigger seasickness.

Is it possible to do a day trip from Santorini to Crete? We would like to visit Knossos and the Archaeological museum in Heraklion.

A day trip from Santorini to Crete is not possible. Ferries leave Santorini for Crete in the late afternoon and arrive in evening. The return ferry to Santorini will leave in the morning. Even with a one night stay in Crete you wouldn’t have time to visit Knossos and the archaeological museum. Two nights on Crete is a minimum for getting to see and do anything beyond eating out in Heraklion.

DAY TRIPS FROM PAROS

day trips from paros

Paros Island is one of our favourite places to visit in Greece and there is a lot to see and do there, from beaches to historical sites, great beach clubs, bars and restaurants and some fantastic shopping too. But there are also some fantastic Day Trips from Paros that you can do too. We’ve got them all covered here.

day trips from paros

Which day trip from Paros should you book?

Some of these day trips are ones you can easily organise yourself while others are organised tours.

A lot of the tours we recommend are with Get Your Guide or Viator .

These are well known, global companies and we have chosen to partner with them for the following reasons.

1. They have a solid reputation across the planet for providing reliable, safe, and enjoyable tours. 2. In most cases, bookings can be canceled up to 24 hours before starting. 3. Their customer service is available 24/7 in multiple languages. 4. In many cases, they are transparent about who the tour is with and name the operator in the description. 5. They have very secure booking platforms – something small, local operators often do not.

day trips from Paros

‘Anti’ means ‘opposite’ in Greek and is where the English word comes from. Antiparos  is only 1 nautical mile west of, or opposite, the island of Paros.

It is 45 square kilometres in size and has a population of around 1200 people. There is one main town called Antiparos Town. The main attractions on the island are its famous cave and excellent beaches whilst fishing, tourism and farming are its primary industries. It’s also home to a number of celebrities including Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson who reside there every summer.

How to do a day trip to Antiparos

This is one of the most relaxing day trips from Paros that you can do as you can take your own car over on the car ferry from Pounda (also called Pounta), which takes just 7 minutes, and explore at your own pace, returning back to Paros whenever you are ready.

No need to worry about queues, where to sit on the ferry, hotel transfers, taxis or anything!

Things to do on a day trip to Antiparos

The main town on the island, Antiparos Town, is also the port and is really quite nice – you could easily spend the day there. Otherwise, much of the island is uninhabited and inaccessible by road but there are some special things to see and do including;

  •  Antiparos Town
  • Shopping and art
  • Castle (Kastro) of Antiparos
  • Antiparos Cave ( spot Lord Byrons signature)
  • Cafes, bars and tavernas – especially sunset at Sifneiko
  • Boat trips to Despotiko Island and the Ancient Sanctuary.

Visit Mykonos from Paros

One of the most popular destinations in Europe and also one of the most polarising.

Mykonos is the party capital of Greece and also the most popular destination with the LGBTI+ community and celebrities alike. It’s not uncommon for countless Hollywood Celebrities to be seen here in Summer and there really is red carpet on come beaches down to the SuperYachts.

It can be expensive, crowded and a bit crazy but it is also very pretty and has some unique things that are worth seeing such as Little Venice and the Windmills.

It’s easy to visit Mykonos from Paros by Ferry and there are several services a day. The trip takes just less than an hour on the fast ferry and it’s good to understand how to get around once you get there as it can be quite chaotic.

Things to do on a day trip to Mykonos

Activities include:

  • Visiting Little Venice, Mykonos Town, searching for Pedro the Pelican, seeing the much-photographed windmills and visiting the many excellent beaches.
  • The shopping is high end and plentiful
  • Check out the world-famous beach clubs for some serious celebrity spotting and to dance on bars and see Guest DJs are regular events.
  • Do a tour of the island to see some more ‘local’ sites including some hidden gems
  • A boat tour over to Delos Island is one of the most popular, and worthwhile, things to do in the Greek Islands. This uninhabited island was believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and was once a thriving trading port and small empire.

A sailing tour of Delos and Rhenia Islands

Enjoy an unmissable sailing experience from Mykonos and discover the ancient, sacred island of Delos – the birthplace of Apollo. Visit secluded beaches on Rhenia island, swim in the sea and enjoy a barbecue too.

The Archipelago of Santorini includes Greece’s most iconic attraction – Fira Island. Home to the much-photographed white cave houses and blue church domes with stunning views over the Caldera, especially at sunset.

If you haven’t planned to stay a day or two in Santorini, which has some truly incredible accommodation , then it is possible to visit it for the day from Paros.

How to visit Santorini from Paros

The fast ferries take just 2 hours and there are several a day although you may not find a departure back after sunset, so this can be tricky to organise.

Things to do on a day trip to Santorini include:

  • The Fira to Oia Hike ( or reverse)
  • Explore Oia – the Byzantine Castle, Church of Panagia, Nikolaoua Nomikoua (Blue Dome church) & numerous galleries & shops. Don’t miss Atlantis Books !

day trips from paros

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades Islands. It is famous for its lush and fertile lands along with its picturesque, whitewashed villages and towns. Its mountainous landscape is also world-renowned for its marble, which has been used to make statues for centuries.

Although it has a modest permanent population, Naxos’ beauty makes it a popular place for tourists. It’s a big island, there’s some  fantastic accommodation and there are a lot of great things to do on Naxos .

How to visit Naxos from Paros.

The easiest way to visit Naxos is by ferry. There are ferries up to 8 times a day in Summer from Parikia Port on Paros and the trip takes only 30 minutes.

The main town of Naxos, Chora, is also the Port and many people find they are happy just exploring around there.

If you want to see more of the island you will need several hours and a car or there is a good bus service too.

Things to do on a day trip to Naxos

  • Chora has some excellent beaches with great swimming conditions and beachfront tavernas as well as a charming Old Town including the Old Market at the base of the former Castle.
  • The harbour is also a nice place to spend an hour or two
  • Other places of interest around the islands are the Cedar Forest of Alyko, Cave of Zeus, the Kouroi of Florio and the Temple of Demeter.
  • Naxos is renowned for its wonderful beaches and there are many to see and enjoy
  • The island is also a foodie hotspot and a half-day cooking class is very popular
  • Take a historical full-day Bus Tour around the island
  • Spend the day sailing and exploring the Small Cyclades with swimming and snorkelling

The Small Cyclades

day trips from Paros

Just below Naxos is a group of beautiful small islands called the Small Cyclades, sometimes known as the Little Cyclades or the Lesser Cyclades too.

This includes the islands of Donousa, Schioussa and Ano Koufonisi as well as several uninhabited islands as well.

The water in this area is fairly shallow so it is crystal clear and stunning azure blue and emerald green. The islands have numerous coves and caves to explore and swimming conditions are generally excellent.

You can catch a ferry over from Chora in Naxos but the best way to see them is on a sailing trip which you can do from either Naxos or Paros. It’s a magical day out and one that is often cited as many visitors favourite activity while they were on Paros.

Depending on the wind conditions on the day sometimes the trip may go to Antiparos and Despotika instead – equally wonderful and very similar.

People Are Sharing The "Not-So-Popular" Vacation Spots That Deserve WAY More Attention, And I'm Already Planning My Summer Vacation

"It's like Paris, only with a small fraction of the crowds..."

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

Don't get me wrong, there's a reason why places like Paris, Tokyo, and Los Angeles are popular tourist destinations. These places have so much to offer visitors. But it's a great big world out there, full of hidden gems and lesser-traveled locales. So, redditor u/Hot-Vegetable3827 asked, "Which not-so-popular country is a must-visit?" Here's what people said, including some members of the BuzzFeed Community.

1. "hydra, greece. my wife and i just took a long greek honeymoon. one island we really liked that isn't as well known as santorini and mykonos was hydra. in fact, it was probably our favorite island. there isn't much to do or see there, but it was very laid back and chill. it was basically a vacation from our vacation, which we needed after a couple of busy days of sightseeing in athens and before we went partying in mykonos. there aren't any cars on the island, only donkeys, and it's very walkable and small.".

2. "Laos. I totally fell in love with every last thing about this country. The people are fantastic, the food is killer, and the landscape is just gorgeous."

— u/Westonworld

3. "Cartagena, Colombia. My wife and I went last year, and we have already planned our next visit. You can get there pretty easily and quickly from the US. There's cheap and delicious street food, friendly people, and nice weather all year round."

Narrow street with colonial buildings and a church tower in the distance

— u/Wakan_Tanka

"I always recommend Cartagena and the Rosario Islands. The whole week I spent there was cheap and incredible, and the Rosario Islands are on par with any tropical vacation spot but with hardly any tourists and extremely cheap."

— JessicaPage

4. "Slovenia. My wife was born there, and we go back every other year to see her family and friends. It's such a beautiful country. The secret is starting to get out now, especially Instagrammable places like Lake Bled and Predjama Grad. Granted, it's still nowhere near as crowded as similar countries like Croatia."

View of Ljubljana’s canal with historic buildings and the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

— u/gratusin

5. "Tunisia, especially Tunis and Monastir. I absolutely love it there. It's very cheap to visit, and the people are incredibly friendly."

— kimberlywilley1979

6. "Curaçao. I had an amazing beach vacation there. It was much cheaper than the more well-known and visited Caribbean islands."

— u/humancanvas79

7. "Oman. This Middle Eastern country has rugged mountains, desert dunes, historic forts, and amazing ships."

— u/Echo71Niner

8. "Sri Lanka. Damn, it is beautiful, and this country has it all: beaches, forests, mountains, ancient temples, and wildlife safaris. I loved the food there, including lots of curry. The beach areas offer a lot more culinary variety, like lots of fresh seafood."

Aerial view of a beach with boats, rock barrier, and surrounding greenery

9. "Ghent, Belgium is an incredible city. It's vibrant, historic, and fun! I would highly recommend a visit."

— laughingcaptain56

10. "Malta. You'll find delicious food (it's sort of a mix of Arabic and Italian influences) and lots of historical places like ancient ruins. The capital, Valletta, is beautiful, and there are also two smaller islands called Gozo and Comino that you can visit. There's also extensive public transport, so it's easy to get around if you don't drive. I can't recommend it enough if you're the sort of person who's into exploring history, food, and culture."

A view down a historic street with three pedestrians and a distant harbor

— u/TheKnightsTippler

11. "Belfast is underrated, IMO. I wanted to revisit Dublin, but hotel prices are absolutely wild at the moment, so I went to Belfast instead. I found that it was a very interesting city with excellent food, pubs, music, culture, and proximity to the countryside for day trips. Everyone I met in the city was funny and friendly."

12. "Lyon. It’s a two-hour train ride from Paris but with a fraction of the population. It’s like the Florence of France with its walkability and world-class cuisine."

13. "Kazakhstan. Stunning nature and landscapes, a unique cuisine, and friendly people who are really generous to guests. It's also home to some fascinating archaeological sites."

— u/Meorazhar

14. "New Mexico. People who live in the US don't realize how unique and beautiful the landscape is. The drive from Española to Taos is probably one of my favorite in the world. The food really is second to none. Plus, there's a Balloon Fiesta. Enough said."

Sunset over a river with rocky cliffs on either side and grassy foreground

— rachadach23

15. "I absolutely love Guatemala. If you can speak even a little bit of Spanish, it's even better. Fly in, leave Guatemala City, and make Antigua your base. There's enough to see in Antigua and the surrounding areas that it can be a whole vacation alone, but there are also many places to visit on a day or overnight trip from Antigua."

Two distant volcanoes behind a misty landscape with scattered greenery and a clear foreground

— u/ShitfacedGrizzlyBear

16. "Bolivia. It has an amazing landscape, it's spotlessly clean, the people are friendly, and there's a lot of fun to be had if you want to party. I haven't been back in ten years, and I hope it's still as lovely. It holds a special place in my heart."

Cloudy sky reflected on a calm water surface at dusk

— u/canntrelaxneverrelax

17. "Jordan. Petra is easily the coolest thing I’ve ever seen with my own eyes. Pictures do not do it justice at all. You could fit elephants through the door of the Treasury. It’s wild."

Al Khazneh, also known as The Treasury, at Petra with visitors near its entrance

18. "Mongolia. There's really only one big city, Ulan Bator, and one or two days there is enough. But that countryside! It's so beautiful. I went out to a camp where I was set up with a ger (a Mongolian yurt), and you just hang out in the beauty of nature."

Aerial view of a cluster of traditional yurts in a vast grassy landscape at dawn or dusk

— u/da_choppada

19. "Sapporo, Japan. My husband and I went to this city on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, and it was spectacular! When most people think about traveling to Japan, they think of Tokyo, but Sapporo is much less touristy, the mountains around the city are incredibly beautiful, and the food is to die for. A scenic hour-long bus ride takes you to the old city of Otaru, best known for its glass-blowing industry and beautiful canals. The subway system is amazing, and the people are friendly and helpful. I've been to a few places in my travels, but Sapporo stands out as the best so far. We already vowed to go back someday."

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

day trip from paris to santorini

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brand at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.
