The 42 Journeys of Your Life

different journey in life

Is your life made up of a many disjointed pieces, or is there a continuum to it all? Are your choices being made by other people’s expectations of you and the circumstances around you, or do you feel that there is an underlying script beneath the surface of your life? Are you being torn in different directions by all types of forces demanding your time and attention, or do you determine what direction your life takes? Is your life a journey from one point to the next, leading to a destination, or is it a bunch of disconnected fragments?

Do you ever feel that your life is like a roller-coaster? With unexpected twists and turns, highs and lows? Sometimes you feel all motivated and enthusiastic; a moment later the inspiration dissipates. What is going on? Why can’t we find an equilibrium?

This week’s Torah portion – which closes book four of the Bible — consists of a combination of two chapters, Matos and Massei, Journeys. This chapter reviews in detail the forty two journeys that the Jewish people traveled on, from the moment they left Egypt, until they arrived (40 years later) to the Promised Land.

The Baal Shem Tov teaches that these forty-two journeys in the wilderness reflect the forty-two psycho-spiritual phases that each person experiences throughout life. “These are the journeys of the Israelites, who had left Egypt” on the way to the Promised Land: All the 42 journeys are about freeing ourselves and transcending the constraints and limitations (Mitzrayim) of our material existence which conceals the Divine, subduing and sublimating the harsh “wilderness” of selfish existence, and discovering the “Promised Land” – a life of harmony between body and soul.

This idea – that your life is a journey consisting of 42 steps – can literally transform your entire life. By examining the cycles of your life you can discover the 42 different phases you have experienced and will experience. Imagine being able to trace the steps of your life and connect the otherwise random dots – seeing how they all are part of one journey leading you to your promised land?

The definition of a journey is: Movement with direction. Like the captain of a ship, each of us needs a compass that allows us to navigate the twists and turns, the ups and downs, the swells and storms of our lives. By studying the 42 journeys in this week’s chapter, you can learn how to align your life, with all its ups and downs, to the compass of a higher rhythm, and create a strategy that rides and taps into these rhythms. It allows you to discover how to synchronize your life journeys to the Divine coordinates that “lead the footsteps of man.” It’s like having an inner compass that senses life’s internal tempo, being able to pace your outer movements by your inner rhythms.

When we feel that every detail of our lives – both the highs and the lows, both the trivial and the important experience – are part of a larger journey, it infuses life with a new exhilarating feeling; you wake up each day knowing that you are on another leg of your journey and that you can determine the trajectory of your own destiny.

Go here for a detailed breakdown of the 42 journeys, and see how they reflect in your life.

42 Journeys Part 7

This column has been following these journeys as we read through the book of Numbers – in an attempt to decipher the personal application and psycho-spiritual meaning and significance of the 42 journeys.

Whenever you feel disconnected or lost you are going through this journey. An aimless life is a desolate one. Nothing is being built; every effort ends up going nowhere.

42 Journeys Part 4

By not allowing our fears to consume us, we can learn to see them through, transform them to awe of the Divine and come out more powerful.

I had the dream that the Dali Lama, just like Moses did not make it into the promised land, I was filled with despair and anger about not reaching ones destination. Until today, now I realize that Moses was working through Joshua, and the Dali Lama will work through his main disciples weather on this land of malkut or in the higher planes of divinity. I realize that this love, pure love, unconditional love is so great and abiding that both men have for humanity it superseeds achieving the goal in the what seems to be the here and now. Love transcends and this energy unites with all divine energy and guides those still left here. WE are not seperate, it is a pure illusion. Rather we are riding a continuum of events that will continue to unfold lead by the divine mother who is active in the universe. She is merged with all that is holy and righteous. So there is no end to the Journeys ..it is infinite…Lakshmi

I was actually in tears at one point, because it hit every single part of my journey, from pre-cancer of the cervix, to marriage to moves, to my husbands surgery, to finally building our house in Manahawkin, to a divorce and all the moves that happen after a divorce, to the ups and downs trying to get my son through his primary schooling. Absolutely amazing! I hope you make this a book, like the Spiritual Counting of the Omar. Im to level 34.. Ive been wondering for the past few years if this is like the path or pattern that we all go through, and you have proven to me, that I was correct in that assumption. Thank you for writing this up! May Hashem bless you

I would like to add a bit of levity to this op ed. I wonder if Douglas Adams is Jewish. The number 42 is, in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the “Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything”, calculated by an enormous supercomputer named Deep Thought over a period of 7.5 million years. Unfortunately, no one knows what the question is when the computer gives the answer.

It is a sci-fi classic which is very funny imho

The Unexpected Ways Our Lifes Journey Defines Who We Are

  • July 7, 2022

Who we are is often shaped by our lifes journey and experiences, both good and bad.

Our lifes journey can take many different paths, and each one helps to define us a little more. We learn and grow from every experience, and each new adventure helps us to become more of who we truly are.

But what exactly is this thing called identity? And how does it change over time?

These are questions that psychologists and philosophers have been pondering for centuries, and there are still no easy answers. But that doesn’t mean we can’t explore and try to understand the topic better. So let’s take a journey (pun intended) into the complex world of an identity!

lifes journey

What is identity?

The dictionary definition of identity is “The identity of a person or place is the characteristics they have that distinguish them from others.”

But of course, there’s much more to it than that. Our identity comprises all the different aspects of ourselves that we present to the world. It’s how we see ourselves and how others see us.

We can say it is our personal brand , the image we project to the world. But it’s also so much more than that.

different journey in life

How does our lifes journey shape our identities?

It is often said that we are a product of our lifes journey and the experiences we have along the way. Indeed, every experience and decision contributes to our identity’s complex tapestry. That is why each person is unique and complex in their own way.

As we journey through life, we constantly encounter new people and experiences that shape our identity.

It’s fascinating to see how many factors shape our identities.

Our upbringing, relationships, the love (or lack thereof) we receive from others, the friends and teachers who influence us, past experiences and events, and even the media we consume can all impact our thoughts and actions.

As a result, our beliefs and values are constantly evolving. That is why our identity is not static; it is ever-changing and dynamic.

Just as no two people are exactly alike, no two journeys are exactly alike either.

Life is an ongoing journey of discovery , and our identity is the map that charts the course.

5 steps to understand better why you are who you are.

Why am I the way I am?

That is a question we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives. And it’s not an easy question to answer. The truth is that we are all products of our upbringing, encounters, experiences, and our environment.

One of the fascinating things about humans is our minds and how complex they are. As a result, we can never fully understand it, but we can start by learning more about ourselves through self-discovery .

As we mentioned, our life experiences shape our thinking, feelings, and behavior. However, if you’re curious about your motivations and behaviors, there are some steps you can take to start understanding yourself better:

#1. Reflect on your lifes journey: Make sense of your past

You can start by looking at your past experiences. Your past, both good and bad, has helped to shape who you are today. So, by reflecting on your lifes journey, you can start to understand why you think and act the way you do.

First, think about your childhood and early social interactions. Often, our early life experiences leave us bent out of shape, influencing our behavior in ways we are unaware of. So, to begin understanding, it is essential to ask yourself some tough questions about your past:

  • What kind of environment did you grow up in?
  • How did your parents/guardians treat you?
  • What were some of the most painful experiences you have had?
  • What did you learn from them?
  • How have they influenced your behavior?

These factors can play a significant role in shaping who you are as an adult.

Once you better understand your past, you can begin to work on making peace with it. That will help you move forward in your life and make positive changes in the present.

One can do this in many ways, and you don’t have to stick with just one method!  Journaling is one way to begin diving into your past.

One study showed a “statistically significant relationship between life story coherence and psychological well-being.” That means you can improve your mental health when you make sense of your past. So, if you have things in your past that you’re struggling to make sense of, take some time to reflect and process them.

It can be difficult and emotional to face your past, so give yourself plenty of time and space to do so.

#2. Challenge your beliefs

Another factor that shapes us into the person we are is our beliefs. Whether it’s political, religious, scientific, or personal, challenging your beliefs can be a gratifying process.

  • Are there things you believe about yourself and the world around you that you’ve never questioned?
  • Why do you believe them?
  • Are they based on facts or feelings?

We all have certain assumptions and beliefs about people, situations, and the world around us. These assumptions and beliefs are often based on our past experiences or what others have told us . But, more often than not, when we question our beliefs, we discover that they are not as accurate as we thought.

It can be difficult and even uncomfortable when you first begin challenging a belief you have held for years.

You might feel like your whole worldview is being shaken or that you’re somehow betraying your beliefs. But by pushing yourself to examine why you believe what you do and how those beliefs came to be, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and what’s important to you.

To really challenge your beliefs, it’s essential to approach the process with an open mind . Be willing to consider that you might be wrong, and be prepared to revise your beliefs if new evidence arises.

It can also be helpful to talk to people with different beliefs than you to understand their perspectives better.

Ultimately, the goal of challenging your beliefs is not to necessarily change them but to learn more about the reasons why you hold them. Doing so can give you a deeper understanding of yourself and what’s important to you.#

#3. Challenge your self-limiting beliefs

In addition to challenging your beliefs, it’s also essential to challenge your self-limiting beliefs. We all have self-limiting beliefs.

Often, self-limiting beliefs are based on our past experiences or what others have told us.

  • I’m not good enough.
  • I’ll never be successful.
  • Other people are always out to get me.

These self-limiting beliefs can often be harmful and can hold us back in life.

If you believe you’re not good enough, you might not even try to achieve your goals. Or, if you think that other people are always out to get you, you might not bother trying to build relationships with others.

That is why it’s important to question these self-limiting beliefs and to see them for what they really are: just thoughts in your head.

Just because you’ve always been told that you’re not good enough doesn’t mean it’s true. And just because you’ve had some bad experiences doesn’t mean that all people are out to get you.

By challenging your self-limiting beliefs, you can start to see things more clearly and make better decisions in your life.

If you’ve been all your life stuck because of your self-limiting beliefs, now it’s time to do something about it.

Start seeing what’s possible for your life! By using the power of future self visualization , you can envision your ideal future and your higher self and begin to take steps toward making it a reality.

#4. Look for patterns in your behavior.

Next, consider your current situation.

Are there any patterns in your life that seem to contribute to negative behaviors or emotions?

One place to start looking for clues is in your behavior . After all, we’re all creatures of habit, and our behavior patterns can say a lot about us.

So, take a close look at the things you do daily.

  • Are you always running late?
  • Do you have a hard time saying no?
  • Do you tend to procrastinate?
  • Why do you keep being drawn to unavailable people?

Really understand where these patterns came from and what they mean for you. What are these patterns trying to tell you about yourself?

It could mean that, in the past, you’ve had trouble setting boundaries because you didn’t want to hurt people’s feelings. It could also signify that you tend to put others before yourself.

Maybe you’re attracted to unavailable people because you grew up feeling like you were never good enough. Because your parents or siblings always made you feel like you were never good enough. As a result, you might have developed a pattern of chasing after emotionally unavailable people.

Or maybe your friends in high school always made fun of you, so you created a habit of self-sabotage.

These are just some examples, but the point is that you can learn a lot about yourself by understanding the patterns in your behavior. You can also begin to see how these patterns might negatively impact your life.

Understanding the origins of our patterns can help change them. And it will be easier to change if you know why you’re behaving a certain way.

#5. Understand your triggers.

A critical part of understanding your identity is understanding your triggers.

  • What are the things that set you off?
  • What makes you react in specific ways?

For example, maybe you get angry when someone criticizes you. Why do you feel that way? Perhaps it’s because when you were young, your parents were always critical of you, making you feel bad about yourself.

Or maybe you feel shy and uncomfortable when you’re around new people. Perhaps it’s because you had a bad experience in the past, like being made fun of by other kids at school.

These are your triggers, and it’s essential to be aware of them. Once you know what sets you off, you can start to work on managing your reactions and triggers more constructively.

Take some time to think about who you are and why you are the way you are. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it. The better you understand yourself, the more you can grow and change in the ways you want to.

Accept and embrace your lifes journey.

Life is a journey and we all have a unique story that makes us who we are. Some of us are born into privilege, while others have to fight for everything we have. Some of us are naturally gifted, while others have to work harder than anyone else to get by. But each of us has something special that makes us who we are.

The important thing is to accept our story and use it as a source of strength rather than weakness.

So embrace the journey, whatever it may be. Embrace the ups and downs, the twists and turns. Embrace the good times and the bad because it’s all part of what makes us special and unique.

However, if you feel stuck, seek out help . A therapist can provide guidance and support as you work to develop a greater understanding of yourself. You can also try to work through it on your own with the help and support of your loved ones. Whichever route you choose, ensure that you take care of yourself during this process.

Final thoughts – Lifes journey

Our life is a continuous journey. It is a never-ending process of personal growth , learning, and self-discovery .

Looking back at my life, I can now see and truly understand that everything happens for a reason.

If it weren’t for all the hardships I’ve faced, every job I’ve had, and every person I’ve met, I wouldn’t be the strong, independent person I am today. Thus, I’m grateful for all my challenges because they’ve made me who I am. Without them, I would be a completely different person.

The truth is that we all want to be someone better than who we are today. But in order to do that, we need to first understand ourselves . Only then can we begin making the necessary changes to become the person we want to be . It’s not going to be easy, but it’s definitely worth it.

The key is to accept and enjoy your lifes journey, no matter how challenging it may be. Remember, you have the power to change who you are. And that is definitely something worth celebrating.

Every day, we are faced with new challenges and opportunities. It’s up to us what we do with them. So don’t give up on yourself. Take the first step today.

What are the stages of life?

The 8 stages of life, other theories about the stages of life, how to navigate and thrive through the stages of life.

If someone asked you what stage of your life you are in, what would you say?

Many of us think of the stages of life as simply childhood and adulthood. But can our lives really be summed up into two basic categories?

Throughout our lifetimes, we experience drastic changes and big milestones. From the day we are born, we are constantly learning, growing, and developing.

As complex beings, it is difficult to summarize human development into clear-cut stages. But many practitioners in developmental psychology have created theories to help understand our intellectual and cognitive development better.

These theories give us a better idea of how we move through different life goals at different times.

Let’s explore the various stages of life and why understanding them can help your personal development .

The stages of life are the different phases that all individuals pass through in a regular lifetime. During each stage, most people will share common interests, actions, and behaviors .

When we talk about the concept of life stages, three distinct phases come to mind: childhood, adulthood, and old age.

However, there is a greater degree of nuance to the life cycle of a human. We are all unique individuals that feel, think, and experience different things as we grow in years of age.

A dramatic lifestyle change often characterizes the transition to a different stage of life. People often say that someone is entering a new stage of life when they move out of their home, graduate, retire , or have children .

But how many stages of life are there? Well, that depends on who you ask.

Some developmentalists break up the human life span into nine stages . Others think twelve is a more suitable number .

In some of these theories, the first stage is prenatal development. So in the eyes of some psychologists, the life cycle begins before birth.

While there are many theories, the important thing to remember is that we are all individual humans with unique experiences. The stages of life framework is simply meant to be a lens through which to see our lives.

We’ll dive into more frameworks for the life stages soon, but let’s first discuss Erik Erikson’s popularized theory of psychosocial development.

Erik Erikson is a renowned American-German psychologist from the twentieth century. He specialized in the study of the ego and used psychoanalytical tools to both investigate and present his theories.

Erikson is famously responsible for developing the concepts of identity crisis and the stages of psychosocial development.

His theory of psychosocial development emphasizes social interactions. He argues that a person’s social contexts and experiences determine their personality.

Conflict is also central to the theory. In each stage of life, Erikson proposes a conflict. Each conflict is a turning point where a person faces a struggle to achieve a psychological quality. These conflicts then bring about the individual’s transition into the next stage.

So according to Erik Erikson’s theory, what are the stages of life? His hypothesis covers eight particular life stages as follows:

  • Toddlerhood
  • Preschool years
  • Early school years
  • Adolescence
  • Young adulthood
  • Middle adulthood
  • Late adulthood

When you are young, you might have some grandiose idea of where you see yourself in ten years. Plenty of kids dream of being superheroes or the president. But with time, these hopes and dreams will likely transform into a more grounded and specific vision .

As you grow into yourself, you cultivate a set of values , interests, and aspirations. Naturally, the personal goals of an eight-year-old will be very different from those of a forty-year-old.

Different life experiences help you grow and learn, and your outlook on the world changes. As your age increases, so does your level of maturity.

With more maturity comes a level of respect, compassion , and self-awareness . The relationship you have with yourself changes.

Infancy begins when an individual is born and continues until they are eighteen months old. This time is largely characterized by the infant’s relationship with their caregiver(s) and the conflict of trust vs. mistrust.

If they are well taken care of, the infant comes to trust their parent or guardian. If they are neglected, they will likely project this mistrust onto relationships during the other stages of their life.

Although individuals of all ages struggle with trust issues , it is a characteristic feature of this first stage of life.

The virtue of the infancy stage is hope. If an individual is adequately cared for as an infant and finds themselves in a challenging situation later in life, they are more inclined to believe that someone will come to their aid.

2. Toddlerhood

This early childhood stage spans from eighteen months to three years old. At this age, toddlers are beginning to learn independently. If a toddler’s sense of independence and self-confidence are encouraged, it nurtures their autonomy.

But if these young children are scolded or mocked for their curiosity, they may develop feelings of shame, self-doubt, and guilt. These insecurities could inhibit their personal growth because confidence is vital to evolving as a human being. Hence, the primary conflict is autonomy vs. shame and doubt.

The virtue of the toddler stage is will. A sense of will is a product of the child’s growing confidence in their physical and cognitive capacity.

3. Preschool years

The preschool years range from ages three to five. At this age, the primary conflict is between initiative and guilt. As with toddlerhood, this is a symptom of their attempts to learn independently and become more fully formed as human beings.

If a child’s caregiver encourages them to do things on their own, they grow to become individuals who take initiative and have a purpose in life . If their caregivers criticize and demotivate them, they develop guilt.

Unlike earlier stages, interactions with other children of roughly the same age facilitate most of the development here.

4. Early school years

During the early school years, children are between the ages of five and twelve. They experience a tension between industry and inferiority.

At this stage in life, a child becomes increasingly self-aware. This self-actualization involves social and emotional development.

There is also a focus on cognitive development — you learn to read and write in this stage.

Accomplishment and praise will make a child at this stage industrious. But a lack of recognition results in feelings of failure and inferiority . If a child feels validated and supported in their endeavors, they will develop the virtue of competence.

5. Adolescence

This stage of life is famously turbulent. Between the ages of twelve and eighteen, most individuals will experience a crisis of identity. This period is forward-looking as teenagers consider their future and invest in social connections .

More than anything, the typical teenager wants to be accepted by their peers.

A teenager will explore the different types of roles that they can occupy as an adult. It is a period of all-consuming self-discovery, and this journey can be very confusing.

The virtue of adolescence is fidelity. A healthy support network will help a teenager to develop the ability to form relationships despite potential differences .

6. Young adulthood

Young adulthood happens between the ages of eighteen and forty. Typically, people in this stage are building the social, professional, and financial foundations they’ll need for the rest of their lives.

The primary conflict of early adulthood is intimacy vs. isolation. This tension is based on the presence or absence of intimate personal relationships . The type of development is primarily social.

If a young adult avoids intimacy because they are afraid of failure, disappointment , or commitment, they are likely to feel isolated and alone . Young adults may experience things like a quarter-life crisis . Yet they may also start to learn from their failures .

However, if they establish a solid social network , they will feel connected to — and hopefully understood by — the world around them. The virtue of this stage is an increased capacity for love.

7. Middle adulthood

According to Erikson, middle adulthood starts at forty and ends at sixty-five. The primary conflict during this midlife stage is the tug-of-war between generativity and stagnation . Generativity is an adult’s choice to pass on what they have learned to younger generations.

If an adult in this stage is unhappy or resentful about their life, they may choose to stew in their discontent and avoid contributing to society. If they decide to be a positive and productive member of their community, they will develop the virtue of care.

8. Late adulthood

The eighth and final stage of life is late adulthood. This stage refers to any individual who is older than sixty-five years old.

Late adulthood is a time of deep reflection and introspection . If you are proud of the life that you have led, then you should feel a sense of peace. If, however, you are haunted by regrets and failures, you will likely experience despair and resentment.

According to Erikson, either ego-integrity or ego-despair characterizes the end of life for older adults. The virtue of this stage is wisdom.

teenage-students-sitting-in-classroom-stages-of-life

Erik Erickson’s theory isn’t the only one out there — for years, philosophers, psychologists, and academics have debated the number of life stages and when they occur. To get a better perspective on all the stages of life and how this framework can help you, let’s take a look at some of the other theories.

Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development

While Erikson proposes eight stages of life, Jean Piaget proposes only four. His theory looks at the nature of intelligence . He believes that the way children acquire knowledge determines the progression of mental development.

These stages are:

  • sensorimotor (birth to two years old)
  • preoperational (ages two to seven)
  • concrete operational (ages seven to eleven)
  • formal operational (twelve years and older)

Piaget emphasizes the importance of curiosity in cognitive development .

Daniel Levinson’s Seasons of Life Theory

Unlike Piaget’s theory, which ends in the adolescent stage of life, Levinson looks at an individual’s entire life . He emphasizes the development that happens as an adult.

The Seasons of Life Theory consists of sequence-like stages. These stages occur during two types of periods. The Stable Period is when we make crucial life choices. The Transitional Period is when one stage ends and another begins.

The major shortcoming of this theory is that the research relates solely to men’s experiences. Levinson chose to interview only biological men.

Klaus Riegel’s Dimension of Development

Riegel’s theory doesn’t map a uniform process of development. Instead, his theory highlights the unpredictable nature of life.

Riegel proposes that personal development happens because of external and internal changes you experience in your adult life.

He outlines four interrelated internal and external dimensions of development:

  • The internal psychological level includes emotional intelligence and mental capacity.
  • The internal physical dimension describes physical and sexual maturity.
  • The external cultural-sociological dimension refers to the expectations and opportunities of society.
  • The external environmental dimension includes the political, physical, and economic context in which an individual lives.

Although we can describe the human life cycle in clear-cut stages, we continually and gradually change from day to day.

To navigate and thrive through these stages of life, you need to prepare yourself to take the lessons of one stage into the next. That way, you can keep growing into a happier, better version of yourself as you progress through the stages of life.

Here are a few ways you can do that:

  • Process your childhood trauma with the help of mental healthcare professional
  • Prioritize your personal growth by doing inner child and shadow work
  • Understand your patterns and what’s really important to you by going on a self-discovery journey
  • Commit to making the life changes you know you need to by enlisting the support of a coach or family and friends

These practices will help your maturity increase as your age does. That’s good for both you and your loved ones — with more maturity comes more respect for yourself and others, more compassion , and more self-awareness .

Progressing through the stages of life can be challenging, but it’s exciting because it gives us the opportunity to become our authentic selves . If you can learn how to navigate through the waves of change, you’ll be grateful for all the chances life gives you to grow.

Examples of the Most Life-Changing Experiences People Go Through

  • Traveling to a new country or city

Not many things will change you as much as travel does. As such, it is no wonder that traveling to a new country or city is an example of the most life-changing experiences many people have had.

Whether you travel at a young age or when you are older, visiting new places can affect you in various ways, often positively but sometimes negatively.

For example, traveling to a foreign country is an experience that changes you and your life by exposing you to new places, people, and cultures, helping you gain a new perspective, and promoting your personal growth.

However, if you get robbed, harassed,  fall ill , get stranded or lost, find bad weather, or have some other bad experience while traveling, it can become one of the negative moments that change your life.

  • Going to college

Being in college is one of the most life-changing experiences. Since most people go to college straight from high school, this is the in-between stage where you are not just an adolescent but you aren’t fully an adult either.

Many things that could  define your path in life  can happen during this period. For example, you choose a degree, thus your desired career; you meet new people who may or may not be the wrong kinds of people; you may fall in love, and you also make many good and bad decisions.

Additionally, going to college is an example of the most life-changing experiences people go through because you gain a lot of new skills from your classes, activities, struggles, and by interacting with others. These skills can come in handy in the future .

  • Moving out of your parent’s house

Leaving home is a common rite of passage and one of the most life-changing experiences for many people. You will never be the same person after moving out of your parent’s house to  live on your own , with roommates, or with a romantic partner.

For most people, moving out of their parent’s house is the first step in embracing adulthood. It is a life-changing event because it is only after leaving the nest to be on your own that you will know what the real world is actually like.

You have to become more responsible and self-sufficient, but you also have more freedom to do the things you couldn’t do under your parent’s roof.

  • Falling in love

Everyone wishes they could find love. However, falling in love is an example of the most life-changing experiences many people go through. It can transform you and your life positively or negatively.

For instance, falling in love with someone who loves you back is a life-changing moment because it will make you happy , help you see the world differently, and make you more caring and empathetic.

Falling in love may also make you think of the future more often and boost your motivation to work harder on becoming a better version of yourself .

However, falling in love with the wrong person or someone who doesn’t love you back can also be a life-changing experience. You may feel rejected, tolerate things you shouldn’t, or try to change who you are just because you are in love with someone.

  • Getting married

Falling in love and dating are easy; getting married is a whole other thing, and it is an example of the most life-changing experiences that many people go through.

Marriage changes how you view yourself and your spouse, as well as the situations you go through in life.

Your life may become more fulfilling as you now have someone to share experiences and  be completely vulnerable with; you get a new set of relatives and friends; you could reap some financial benefits, and you can start a family.

Marriage is one of the most life-changing experiences for many because no matter how independent or self-reliant you are, you no longer should make decisions without thinking about how they will affect your partner first. You have someone else to consider in your plans.

For some people, marriage could be a negative life-changing experience. For instance, if they discover some hidden negative qualities of their spouse, such as being abusive, having  bad money habits , being a glutton, chronic cheating, being lazy, having a tendency to hold grudges, being  a bad parent , being envious of your success, etc.

  • Having a baby

Whether you are married or not, in your teens or older, having a baby is one of the most life-changing experiences. For most people, especially married couples, a baby is a reason to celebrate and it often strengthens the relationship.

Your life may change now that there are more people to love, take care of, and consider when making decisions and plans, but for the most part, having a baby while married is just one of the expected natural progressions of the relationship.

For many teenage moms and other unprepared mothers, having a baby can change your life completely, sometimes negatively. It could result in you having to drop out of school, being disowned by your parents, getting married early, resenting your child for limiting you, having to start working early, having increased stress levels, and missing out on things that other people your age are doing.

Even if one decides not to keep the baby and give it up for adoption, it would still be a life-changing decision for them and the child.

However, having a baby can still be a positive life-changing moment for some teenage parents and other people who get kids while not ready. It could motivate you to  get your life together , work harder at school or in the workplace to be better, not be promiscuous, be more responsible, and change the kinds of people you hang out with.

  • Achieving success

Becoming successful at a particular thing is an example of the most life-changing experiences people go through. It could be success involving gaining power such as in politics, achieving your goals at work, becoming rich like after winning the lottery, or being famous such as on social media.

Achieving success is a life-changing event because it enables you to change your lifestyle, motivates you to try even harder, introduces you to new kinds of people, raises your status in society, reduces anxiety and stress about finances, and also makes you start to think and act differently.

Success also changes the way other people treat you, from fans and receptionists to bank managers and more. It can open opportunities that were closed before.

For some people, success can be a life-changing experience that transforms them negatively. It may change their personality and behaviors. For instance, they could become arrogant and rude or they may develop bad habits they couldn’t afford to have while they had no money.

Success can also ruin your existing relationships, affect your privacy and anonymity, and expose you to more people with bad intentions , some who may even try to kill you for your money or due to envy.

  • Listening to a motivational speaker

Hearing another person’s life story can be a life-changing experience, for example, listening to motivational speakers on TED and other similar talks.

You can learn from other people’s struggles and how they dealt with the obstacles that could have kept them stuck, relate to these people’s experiences, and get the inspiration and motivation to change your life and outlook from the advice they give.

  • Death of a loved one

Loss of loved ones through death is an example of the negative life-changing experiences many of us must go through at some point. Besides the grief that may last forever, a lot of things could change about you and your life.

The death of a loved one can make you develop the ability to be self-reliant and more resilient. It can make you love and appreciate your remaining family and friends more.

Additionally, the loss of a loved one can help you know the people who truly care through the support they provide .

Death could also change your perspective as you realize how short and valuable life really is. If you lose too many loved ones, you may become desensitized to death as you begin to  accept death and dying  as a part of life.

  • The end of a relationship

Heartbreak is an example of the most life-changing experiences people go through. No matter if it was a breakup with someone you were dating or a divorce, these life-changing events can transform you in positive and negative ways, whether you are the one who initiated the ending of the relationship or not.

For instance, going through the pain of a breakup or divorce can result in a change in your way of thinking about relationships or a particular gender, make you feel lost and hopeless, fill you with  regrets , affect your sense of  self-worth , and may even alter your entire personality.

However, heartbreak doesn’t only change your life in negative ways. It can be a positive life-changing experience, especially if you were the one to initiate the end of the relationship.

Even while feeling the pain of the breakup, you may realize that you deserve better and feel motivated to reinvent yourself. Later, when you have moved on, you will confirm that  time really does heal all wounds , and you may meet the right person for you.

  • Loss of a job

Most people experience having to  cope with a job loss  at some point in their lifetime. Getting fired, being laid off, and resigning from a job are examples of the most life-changing experiences people go through.

Losing a job, especially when you have no plans for what to do next, can be a devastating experience. It could affect your sense of self, how you think about the future, as well as  your mental, emotional, and physical health .

However, losing a job can be the best thing to ever happen to you sometimes. It could make you discover your strengths and weaknesses, force you out of your comfort zone, and give you an opportunity to change your life.

Many people often discover what they are passionate about,  start businesses , and figure out their purpose after becoming unemployed; thus, job loss is not always a negative life-changing experience.

  • Becoming ill

Learning you are ill is another example of the most life-changing experiences that many people go through, especially when it comes to terminal illnesses, chronic diseases, conditions that require surgery, and accidents.

You will always classify your life ‘before’ and ‘after’ the diagnosis or the life-changing event differently because nothing will ever be the same, even if you heal.

Falling ill can be a moment that changes your life significantly by inhibiting your ability to go about your everyday tasks, causing financial difficulties , forcing you to make healthy lifestyle choices, changing your body, and shifting your outlook toward life.

  • Near-death experiences

Besides life-threatening health conditions, there are many other near-death experiences you may have gone through, for example, a suicide attempt, an accident, an attempted murder, or a drug overdose.

Near-death experiences  are usually among the most life-changing events for many people who have ever been in such a situation.

Depending on what caused it, almost dying can make you gain a new sense of purpose, appreciate life more, be more careful,  adopt healthier habits , stop fearing death, and become more spiritual.

  • Unhealthy relationships

Whether it is your relationship with your parents, siblings, friends, and people at work or the one with your romantic partner, toxic relationships are one of the most life-changing experiences.

Unhealthy relationships can change how you view yourself, other people, and the world in general. For instance, they could lower your self-esteem, stress you out, isolate you, reduce your trust in others and yourself, and even  affect your physical health .

Being in a toxic relationship may change your personality completely.

Getting out of an unhealthy relationship could be a life-changing event as well. The experience could make you better at recognizing red flags in potential future partners or other people in your life, and you may also start to love and value yourself more,  put yourself first , and set boundaries.

However, you may still have some PTSD  from the experience that could be easily triggered even long after the toxic relationship ended.

  • Failures and mistakes

Things don’t always go the way you hope they will; you will make mistakes and experience failures on your life’s journey. These failures and mistakes can become examples of life-changing experiences that affected you positively or negatively.

For example, failures and  mistakes can be positive  life-changing events if you use them to learn lessons, gain the motivation to do better next time, and redefine your goals. They could also make you appreciate success a lot more because you know how it feels not to get the desired results.

However, some people may see mistakes and failures as negative life-changing experiences and give up while wallowing in self-pity and blaming themselves instead of finding  ways to bounce back .

In recent years, extreme tourism is growing in popularity as more people want to try adrenaline-pumping adventures, domestically and internationally. The adventures and misadventures are examples of the most life-changing experiences as they can affect you positively or negatively.

For instance, going on successful adventures can be a positive life-changing experience because they will  make your life exciting and interesting , improve your motivation, and boost your confidence . You will feel like you are limitless.

On the other hand, if something goes wrong during your adventures, for example, an equipment malfunction, an injury, a kidnapping, an accident, robbery, getting stranded in the worst places, or some other unfortunate occurrence, the experiences can become negative life-changing events.

You may not look back at your adventures fondly or want to do something like that ever again.

  • We only get one life to live, and we alone choose how to live it.
  • Embracing your life means being true to yourself, not living by someone else’s rules or expectations.
  • Living your best life can require you to choose your own authenticity over others’ acceptance.
  • Making peace with the one road we take in life makes all the difference.

Embrace your life.

It’s my personal slogan for 2022. Each year I adopt a slogan rather than make New Year’s resolutions, which can get so complex and numerous they become onerous simply to remember and too easy to forget. I call upon my slogan in my mind’s self-talk as needed to keep myself on track. Sometimes I say it out loud when I especially need reminding.

I am fond of saying that the longest journey in life is our search to find our true home, the place where we are fully accepted and loved just as we are. I’m equally fond of pointing out that our search, if it’s fruitful, leads us to the realization that our true home actually lies within ourselves. You can be at home wherever you are when you embrace what the late poet Mary Oliver called “your one wild and precious life.”

How Do You Want to Live Your Life?

The reality is that you can’t live every life. You have to choose one, stick with it and live it as best you can. Ideally, the one you choose will emerge from your understanding of who you are in your own heart, what you love and value, where you come from and wish to go, when you want to accomplish the goals you set for yourself, why you believe as you do, and how you want to spend the allocated and very finite amount of time you are given to live your life.

Like all gay men I have known, my journey toward finally embracing my life was a painful one. It included years of hiding the attraction I felt toward other males, even trying to hide it from myself by believing something so fundamental about myself would change, that the “phase” would pass.

Fortunately, my journey also included a pivotal moment, a before and after, when I finally knew that being gay was OK, that what truly matters is the choices I make about who I will be and how I will live. For me, choosing to “come out” and embrace my sexual orientation as a fact of my life had a great deal to do with how highly I value authenticity and integrity. Further along in my journey, I realized that my sexuality is only one facet of myself, that being gay is only one of my identities, which also include son, brother, uncle, author, and New Englander. Understanding and accepting that each is only part of the whole, I embrace the life that has flowed out of their unique blend.

What Embracing Your Life Looks Like

Embracing your life means being willing to stand out from others and being true to yourself. It means risking others’ disapproval or rejection of you because you choose to act according to your own judgment and values rather than those that may have been prescribed without your consent, perhaps even before you were born.

“This above all: to thine own self be true,” goes Polonius’ oft-repeated advice to Hamlet in Shakespeare’s play. “And it must follow,” he adds, “as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

When you embrace your life, when you are at home within yourself, you will be as authentic with others as you are with yourself. You won’t feel a need to apologize for not being the person someone else might wish you were. You won’t pretend to be anyone, or anything, but will instead enjoy being who and what you are. You will know that is all you need—and it’s enough for one life, yours.

Embracing your life means accepting where you are on your life’s journey, not measuring your progress by anyone else’s standards but those you set for yourself. Only you can truly judge how far you have come because only you know where you began your journey, the obstacles that have stood in your way, and the suffering you have endured, between then and now.

Poetic Wisdom for Embracing Your Life

In his poem “The Road Not Taken,” Robert Frost describes a choice made at a fork in the road in a forest—or, we might say, in life’s road. A choice must be made: to take one road rather than the other, to live life one way rather than the other.

The poet fancies he can one day return to the fork in the road. “Yet,” he says, “knowing how way leads on to way/I doubted if I should ever come back.” He predicts that, “ages and ages hence,” he will describe his encounter with that fork, and the choice he made. “Two roads diverged in a wood,” he concludes, “and I—I took the one less traveled by/And that has made all the difference.”

Embrace your life and you will find the safest, most accepting home—within your own heart. That will make all the difference.

Metaphors for Life That Can Fit Your Journey

  • Using Metaphors

Metaphors about life are figures of speech that state that one thing is actually another thing. They are a way of creating a comparison that while not literally true, provides a figurative meaning. This can help you think about your life and problems in a different way , also serving as a source of encouragement, motivation, or gratitude.

Here we explore some common metaphor examples about life that can be used to inspire you in your daily life. These metaphors may also help you better understand some of the challenges you face, giving you the ability to see more clearly why you feel the way you do or even how to move forward.

How Metaphors About Life Begin

As children, we begin to understand and organize the world. If we think of the brain as a filing cabinet, childhood is when we open new files and label them. We then spend the rest of our lives putting material in these files.

Metaphors often begin as a way to understand the world around us, both as individuals and within the communities in which we live. They can make it easier to know where to place this information in our internal filing system.

Impact of Metaphors for Life

Even if we don't know the origin of certain life metaphors, many have stood the test of time for good reasons. These metaphor examples not only help us define and describe an experience but they can be used to improve our lives in many ways.

For example, some people see life as a battle. Every encounter is a struggle, and if they don't win, they feel like they have lost. Others view life as an adventure. Each new day brings new opportunities to explore, and if something goes badly today, there's always tomorrow.

If you are facing a challenge , a metaphor might help you see the big picture and give you strength. For example, someone going through cancer treatment may look at the journey as climbing a mountain. It may be difficult at the moment, but the view that lies at the top helps them keep pushing forward.

Metaphors can also provide a picture that helps others enter your world. A picture is often worth a thousand words, but a word picture (a metaphor) can sometimes do the same. Alternatively, a negative metaphor may help you see that you haven't been living your life the way you wish. It might be the stimulus you need to make changes.

While there are no specific studies looking at commonly held life metaphors and wellness, positive thinking is beneficial in many ways. A general attitude of optimism has been correlated with lower rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, and infection.

Common Metaphor Examples for Life

Metaphors for life are not always obvious. We may have to stand back a long way to see patterns. Because the way we look at things can have a great impact on how our lives unravel, it's worthwhile to think about the metaphors that fit the life we currently live.

Metaphors can be positive or negative. These are just examples and not every metaphor will resonate with every individual. Take a moment to think of other metaphor examples that may describe your life or serve you better.

If you see your life as a garden, you may feel that relationships with family and friends can be cultivated like flowers or vegetables. Relationships, like flowers, need regular watering. They need sunshine. Sometimes they need to be pruned. Sometimes you need to weed the garden (or eliminate toxic friends ).

The end result of careful and regular care, with timely interventions for insect infestations or decay, can lead to plants (or relationships) that are growing, producing oxygen that helps you breathe. They also create beauty as they flower and bloom.

You may see a battle as a metaphor for your life if everything is a competition or a struggle. In a battle, you are always either winning or losing. If a battle represents your life, you may wish to look at how life isn't always about winning or losing.

Relationships, especially, are not always a competition. Sometimes it is better to be more loving toward others than to be right or win.

Viewing your life as a mission can be either positive or negative. You may feel that you have talents and gifts you wish to share. On the other hand, you might feel that you need to convince others that your point of view is the only correct one.

Just as with missions throughout history, your life can be a platform to bring goodness to the world. Alternatively, you may see your mission as the need to impose your beliefs on those who do not wish to hear them.

A journey is a common metaphor for life as it reminds us that the destination is not our only goal. Like with any journey, there are times when the roads are straight and times when they are winding.

This metaphor example helps us remember that there will be ups and downs and potholes along the way—times when life will feel easy and times when life feels hard . Yet, there are also often wonderful surprises and fun discoveries that we would never have experienced if it weren't for the route we chose.

An adventure can also be a beautiful metaphor for life. We don't always know where we are going, but the thrill of our travels (our day-to-day living) leaves us excited and ready to see and experience new things.

A building is a solid metaphor for life and can be a reminder that a sturdy foundation is needed before building higher. Once you have a firm foundation in place, whatever that means to you, it's easier to confidently add floors and rooms that will stand the test of time and weather.

Roller Coaster

This metaphor example can describe life or it can describe the speed bumps we encounter. For example, people with a chronic disease know the roller coaster effect of a challenging diagnosis. Using the metaphor of a roller coaster also illustrates what many people who have had hardships understand so well.

You don't fully experience the high points of your journey without the contrast of the lows. For example, studies are now finding that being diagnosed with cancer doesn't just introduce challenges but can also change people in positive ways as well.

Stained-Glass Window

The metaphor of a stained-glass window illustrates not just the variety of lights and colors which make up our world, but the beauty in every person and situation. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude by taking the time to see what isn't obvious at a quick glance can be illustrated by this metaphor.

Mountain Climb

Climbing a mountain is a great metaphor for many parts of our lives. It can describe our educational path or the steps we take in climbing the corporate ladder. Life often consists of hierarchies.

This metaphor example also illustrates that it typically takes hard work, determination, and sometimes sheer endurance to get where we wish to go. Most mountain paths are not directly uphill, but take us down through valleys to get to the next peak.

Emotional resilience allows you to follow the trail as it descends before it turns the corner and heads back up again. This can improve your ability to cope and protect mental health during times of stress.

A race can be both a positive and negative metaphor for life. In the biblical sense of the metaphor, we are called to run the race of life not only for the prize.

A race can also be a negative metaphor, as in the "rat race," describing how sometimes we are so busy going from one place to another that we never really stop to enjoy any particular moment. In yet another negative sense, a race can describe the practice of always finding the fastest route, or needing to keep up with the proverbial Joneses.

If you view life as a courtroom, life can be challenging. In a courtroom, everything in life should be fair. Real life, however, is not always fair.

Good people die young and criminals go free. If you try to constrain your life to the metaphor of a courtroom, you open yourself up for repeated disappointment.

Stepping Stones

Stepping stones can be a metaphor for life in many ways. In a negative sense, stepping stones may describe the phenomena in which we barely get comfortable where we are before we look for a better job or a bigger house. In another sense, stepping stones can be a positive metaphor for a life lived with goals in mind and conscious awareness of the steps needed to get there.

This metaphor can also describe how we sometimes take a detour right or left along our way to prevent negative influences from catching up with us. An example of this type of metaphor is stepping stones crossing a stream in a garden.

Life is a classroom in so many ways and there are always new lessons to learn no matter your age. This metaphor can be a reminder to keep your mind active and strive to continue to learn throughout your life.

A prison can be a metaphor for a life in which you feel out of control . You may feel like you don't have choices and that others have the power. If this is you, it might be helpful to visualize a key to the door by which you can escape to your freedom, and what that might mean in real life.

Learning to reframe a situation can shift your perspective and change how you see a situation. Doing this can help reduce worry, stress, and anxiety.

A battery represents a life metaphor example of being drained and recharged through life, such as the daily drain of energy related to work, followed by weekends and evenings in which to recharge. Often taking small periods of time to recharge at frequent intervals leaves your battery less likely to die (lose all energy).

How to Use These Metaphor Examples

The examples above are just a few of the metaphors that illustrate people's lives. What metaphors fit your life? Do they work for you or do they cause problems and limit your choices? It's possible to change metaphors or modify yours (such as finding the key to the prison cell) but it can take some effort.

Taking the time to think about the metaphors that fit your life can help you find patterns that aren't working well for you, motivate you in positive directions, and help you cope with the obstacles we all periodically face. Think of your life metaphors today, but don't stop there.

Periodically re-think your life metaphors. Are they positive metaphors that bring you peace and contentment , help you reach goals, or allow you to see the beauty around you? Or are they negative metaphors that are limiting your life?

Good mental health includes having metaphors that help you see the big picture of your life. After thinking about your life metaphors, learn about other ways in which you can become a positive thinker and reduce stress in your life .

Metaphors about life can be helpful ways of thinking through problems you might be facing. They can also serve as a source of inspiration and motivation to encourage you to keep working toward your goals.

At other times, negative metaphors might hold you back or contribute to feelings of hopelessness or helplessness. If your life metaphors are hurting instead of helping, look for ways to reframe your thinking in order to take a more positive, optimistic approach.

Our Purpose

Our mission, a brief history.

Different Journeys started when two Melbourne mums, Mel Spencer and Merrin Ayton, came together to do something about the loneliness and isolation they and their autistic children were experiencing. In February 2016 the first autistic Teen Peer Support Social Group event was held at Club Kilsyth in outer east Melbourne. It was an overwhelming and immediate success. Different Journeys has continued to grow and evolve to meet the needs of our autistic community from that day on. Our talented pool of peer mentors, event managers, volunteers, Board members, partners and professional supporters has also grown. We are proud of our collective achievements and of the many lives which have been positively changed forever because of Different Journeys.

Why not join us? Everyone’s welcome.

“The journey for families for teens and adults is made that little bit easier by connecting with the world and not feeling so alone.”
