How Many Disney Cruises to Hawaii Are There?

In comparison with other Disney Cruise Line destinations, Hawaii has significantly fewer sailings than other itineraries. There are typically two to four Disney Cruises visiting Hawaii each year .

Due to the small number of cruises, it is essential to book your trip as early as possible since there are only a limited number of staterooms available. The Vacationeer can help you pick out the perfect Disney cruise based on your budget and preferences.

How Long Are Disney’s Hawaii Cruises?

Disney Cruise Line offers a unique opportunity to experience the stunning beauty of Hawaii through a limited number of Hawaiian cruises. Disney Hawaiian cruises usually last 9-10 nights, while South Pacific Cruises (which also include Hawaii) last around 15 nights .

Experienced and adventurous cruisers may prefer these extended Disney cruises to Hawaii and Disney South Pacific cruises, spending more time in Disney’s Hawaiian ports of call and aboard the magnificent Disney Wonder out at sea. First-time Disney cruisers , however, may find the shorter Disney cruises from Florida to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island , a better choice, as it offers a glimpse of Disney’s magical experiences without the commitment of an extended trip while still being in a sunny tropical setting.

Since availability is limited, it’s important to act quickly to secure your spot on one of these exclusive cruises. The Vacationeer can provide expert trip-planning guidance to ensure you choose the perfect Disney cruise that fits your budget and preferences. They can also keep you informed about future Disney Cruise Line Hawaiian cruise itineraries. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them with any inquiries – they’re friendly, and their services are free!

How Much Do Disney Cruises to Hawaii Cost?

Guests are often pleasantly surprised at how much value they receive on Disney cruises, and these Hawaiian cruises are no exception.

For example, the March 2024 10-Night Hawaiian Cruise from Honolulu to Vancouver starts at $5,200 .

The cost of your Disney Hawaiian cruise depends on the stateroom type you choose and the number of people in your party. More luxurious staterooms generally begin at a higher price than those in the Inside tier. Adding more than two people to your reservation will also increase the cost.

For instance, if you have a family of four, an Inside stateroom starts at around $7,500. And if you want to upgrade to the Verandah category, which offers spectacular ocean views, it starts at around $7,800 for two people — and roughly $11,400 for four.

It’s important to note that prices and availability are subject to change, so it’s always wise to check with The Vacationeer for the most up-to-date information.

Also don’t forget to factor in airfare; these cruises are typically one-way voyages which do not return to the original departure port. You’ll almost certainly need to purchase “open jaw” airfare, with one leg of the flight being as far away as Canada or possibly even Australia.

Disney Hawaiian Cruises: What’s Included in the Price?

Disney cruises are all-inclusive , which is a selling point and a place where value is found. Dining, entertainment, activities, and services are all included in the price, as are character meet-and-greets, movie screenings, Broadway-quality shows, water activities, and fireworks.

Oceaneer Club, Edge, and Vibe provide complimentary activities for children and teens. At the same time, adults can access a range of amenities such as an adult-only pool, nightclub, and fitness center.

Moreover, the price of a Disney cruise includes port expenses, taxes, and fees, making it an exceptional value for families. However, keep in mind that airfare, gratuities , specialty restaurants, spas, shore excursions (Port Adventures), bottled beverages, and alcohol purchased on a Disney cruise aren’t covered.

About the Disney Hawaiian Cruise Terminals

Honolulu Harbor | Image © State of Hawaii

Disney’s 2024 and 2025 Hawaiian Cruises are all one-way cruises. Your cruise will start in either:

  • Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada
  • Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Sydney, Australia

You’ll end in one of the remaining two ports.

Given that most travelers from the US will be traveling from either Honolulu or Vancouver, we’re focusing on these two ports below.

Disney Cruise Line Honolulu Terminal

During one-way Hawaiian cruises, Disney Cruise Line either departs or arrives at Honolulu Harbor (aka the Port of Honolulu). Located on the southern coast of Oahu Island, Honolulu is Hawaii’s largest seaport and capital city. The harbor is deep and protected, ideal for cruises.

Honolulu Harbor has two cruise terminals – the Aloha Tower Cruise Terminal (Pier 11) and Terminal Pier 2. Disney Cruise Line uses Pier 2, which offers modern passenger amenities and luggage storage for a nominal fee.

As the state’s principal airport, Honolulu International Airport offers regular domestic and international flights. It is easily accessible by Uber, taxi, or Oahu Island’s public transportation. The Port of Honolulu is about five miles from Honolulu International Airport.

Disney Cruise Line Announces Early 2022 Itineraries (January – May) – Featuring a Return to Hawaii

Disney Cruise Line released their early 2022 itineraries today. In early 2022, Disney Cruise Line will sail throughout the Caribbean, The Bahamas, Mexico and more from home ports in Florida, Texas, California and New Orleans. Plus, back by popular demand, we’re returning to the sunny, windswept shores of Hawai’i with two 10-night Hawaiian sailings aboard the Disney Wonder.

Today’s release extends the available sail dates through mid-2022 allowing guest to plan vacations or move a currently scheduled cruise more than one year out, as well as take advantage of opening day pricing for some of the new itineraries.

Although the dates were announced today, general booking will not open until Thursday October 2 2nd. However, there will be a tiered booking period beginning Monday October 19th.

  • Monday October 19th – Platinum Castaway Club members & Disney’s Golden Oaks residents
  • Tuesday October 20th – Gold Castaway Club members
  • Wednesday October 21st – Silver Castaway Club members, Adventures by Disney Insiders, and DVC members who have not previously sailed with DCL
  • Thursday October 22nd, first time cruisers will be able to book.

If you’re an existing Castaway Club member, simply log in to your account now to verify your Castaway Club status, so you’ll be all set to book on your designated date. Alternatively, you can call (800) 388-4513 starting at 8:00 AM Eastern Time or contact your travel agent.

Golden Oak Club Members should contact Golden Oak Club Member Services, Disney Vacation Club Members wishing to book with points will need to call Member Services at (800) 800-9800. To make a cash-only booking, call Disney Cruise Line at (866) 325-6348. Finally, Adventures by Disney Insiders call (800) 388-4513 – or contact your travel agent.

Castaway Club members can book online beginning Monday! The only caveat is that this is for new bookings only as the website is still not set up to move a placeholder to a new booking. Those types of bookings will still require a phone call.

The following bears repeating, please do NOT try calling today to book; this will just clog up the phone lines and bog down the reservation cast members. There may be people attempting to book an available cruise vacation today.

Speaking of opening day, we will offer a look at opening day prices for the Early 2022 sailings on Monday.

For anyone looking for Summer 2022 dates, we anticipate the next release to occur in early next year based on the historical itinerary release cycle . As for the Disney Wish inaugural sailings, well, it could happen at any time. However, I suspect we will hear more about the ship before itineraries are announced as not everyone is keen on booking a cruise on a ship based only on the name, atrium, and stern character concept art. Plus, the Disney Wish construction has been delayed .

Below you will find a breakout by ship, but this is a work in progress . I will be updating the website throughout the day as I load the sailings and upload the new itinerary maps. The best way to be alerted to updates if following me on Twitter  @TheDCLblog  – I will tweet updates as they are posted. At the very end, is Disney Cruise Line’s Early 2022 Itinerary Announcement press release.

The Disney Fantasy spend the early part of 2022 sailing her regular 7-night Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises with a return to Saturday departures from Port Canaveral. If you recall, the Disney Fantasy switched to Sunday departures with the last itinerary release in what we believe was in anticipation of the Disney Wish arriving at Port Canaveral for potentially Saturday departures.

Disney Cruise Line Returns to Hawaii, Other Favorite Tropical Destinations in Early 2022

Sailings include a variety of itineraries from Florida, Louisiana,  Texas and California

CELEBRATION, Fla. (Oct. 15, 2020) – In early 2022, Disney Cruise Line returns to Hawaii and other favorite tropical destinations to delight families with one-of-a-kind vacations at sea. Adventure abounds during 10-night Hawaiian Islands cruises and a variety of sailings to the Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexico, departing from coast-to-coast homeports including New Orleans, Galveston, Texas, San Diego, Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida.

Bookings open to the public on Oct. 22, 2020. More details on 2022 itineraries can be found on the  Ports and Itineraries for 2022  page of disneycruise.com.

Hawaiian Islands Cruises from Honolulu and Vancouver

The Disney Wonder returns to Hawaii in early 2022 for two special 10-night cruises: a voyage to Honolulu from Vancouver, Canada, on April 26, and a return sailing to Vancouver on May 6.

Guests will discover the breathtaking beauty of the Hawaiian Islands, including the famous beaches of Waikiki on Oahu; unforgettable views from high atop the summit of Haleakala Crater on Maui; the lush tropical gardens and waterfalls of Kauai; and the diverse natural wonders of Hawaii Island.

Even More Family Vacations from Florida

Vacationers can combine a Disney cruise getaway with a stay at Walt Disney World Resort in early 2022 with two ships sailing from Port Canaveral near Orlando, Florida, and a third ship departing from Miami. Every cruise from Florida in early 2022 includes a visit to Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

  • From Port Canaveral, the Disney Fantasy begins the year with a six-night Western Caribbean cruise, followed by seven-night voyages to a variety of favorite destinations in the Eastern and Western Caribbean.
  • The Disney Dream, also sailing from Port Canaveral, embarks on three- and four-night Bahamian cruises to Nassau and Castaway Cay. Offering even more fun in the sun, one special four-night cruise includes two stops at Castaway Cay.
  • From Miami, the Disney Magic sails four- and five-night Bahamian cruises and five-night Western Caribbean cruises. One special three-night sailing to Castaway Cay and Key West, Florida, makes the perfect long weekend escape.

With a variety of options from Florida to choose from, guests can look forward to embarking on a vacation that provides something for everyone in the family, combining the adventure and relaxation of tropical destinations, the ease and indulgence of an ocean cruise, and the world-class entertainment and service of a Disney vacation.

Popular Tropical Destinations from Galveston and New Orleans

The Disney Wonder sails Western Caribbean getaways early in the year, first from Galveston, Texas, with four-night itineraries, followed by four- and six-night voyages from New Orleans.

A special six-night Bahamian voyage offered from both Galveston and New Orleans gives guests the opportunity to visit Castaway Cay, in addition to the lively town of Key West.

Baja Getaways from San Diego

The Disney Wonder returns to San Diego in March and April with cruises to Baja, Mexico, where guests can enjoy vibrant culture, stunning beaches and exciting water activities.

Most sailings to the Baja peninsula call on the charming coastal city of Ensenada, known for its turquoise blue water and rugged mountainous terrain. A two-night cruise to Ensenada has a Friday departure from San Diego, giving guests the ultimate weekend getaway to experience world-class entertainment aboard the Disney Wonder.

Four- and five-night Baja cruises include a visit to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, a favored destination with dramatic rock formations and white-sand beaches, or to Catalina Island, a tropical gem off the California coast with plenty of outdoor adventures and seaside charm.

Disney Wish

Originally planned to sail in early 2022, the Disney Wish is now scheduled for its maiden voyage in summer 2022 due to pandemic-related delays at the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Germany. As previously announced, the Disney Wish will be powered by liquified natural gas or LNG, one of the cleanest-burning fuels available. At approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, the ship will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

To learn more about Disney Cruise Line or to book a vacation, guests can visit  disneycruise.com , call Disney Cruise Line at 888-325-2500 or contact a travel agent.

In early 2022, Disney Cruise Line sets sail for tropical locales throughout the Caribbean, The Bahamas, Mexico and more from Florida, Texas, California and New Orleans. Plus, back by popular demand, we’re returning to the sunny, windswept shores of Hawai’i with two 10-night Hawaiian sailings aboard the Disney Wonder.

12 Replies to “Disney Cruise Line Announces Early 2022 Itineraries (January – May) – Featuring a Return to Hawaii”

' src=

Only the first Fantasy sailing is a Sunday departure ( 6 night) It reverts back to Saturday departures after that.

' src=

Interesting to see the # of cruises skipping Nassau with stops only at CC and/or a sub for KeyWest. Also interesting to see the variations of Eastern Caribbean itineraries, including 2 with a stop in San Juan. The Fantasy is spending much less time in the Western Caribbean for what appears to be shorter Western Caribbean cruises on the Wonder and Magic. Sad not to see a true Southern Caribbean option for the 2nd winter in a row

' src=

It would be nice, considering the rarity, if DCL allowed those on the 2020 Hawaii sailings to be able to recreate their original booking as it was at cancellation.

Two hopes I know, and one is Bob.

' src=

Hi Scott – the 3/7/22 sailing on the Dream has a notation that it is a DVC Member Cruise. It shows up in the brochure PDF & I don’t find anything about it on the DVC site. Is that possibly a carryover notation due to the two stops in Castaway Cay? Thx.

' src=

I was hoping that too

' src=

Any idea if DCL is extending expiration dates on placeholders? Apologies if this was mentioned in a different post and I missed it. Thanks Scott!

' src=

I actually called DCL today about my placeholder which expires Aug 2021 (booked in Aug 2019) and what they told me is that at this time they are not extending placeholders. I hope they change it.

' src=

I have a question that possibly someone can answer. My TA was getting ready to book us on the 5 night from San Diego to Vancouver and then the 10 night from Vancouver to Hawaii. She received a call from DCL That this type of back to back was not allowed, site an antiquated maritime law. I am familiar with the “Jones Act” a 1920 maritime law that is commonly blamed for prohibiting foreign-flagged vessels from carrying passengers between two U.S. ports, without calling at a distant foreign port along the way. However, it seems to me that Vancouver is a foreign port, so that should comply. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks

' src=

This is probably a DVC Cruise since they had to reschedule the Alaska Cruise until Aug. 22.

' src=

I “third” the motion on giving priority to original 2020 Hawaii Cruise bookings.

' src=

We were hoping for a Western cruise in late April on the Fantasy, but it looks like the last sailing for that ship is 4/16. Wonder why they would not have one later in the month since other ships are listed with dates out through 4/30?

' src=

Potentially, the Fantasy’s schedule may be determined based on the plans for the Disney Wish. Before the delay of the Wish, the Fantasy switched to Sunday departures potentially making room for Saturday departures on the Wish. The next release could have a short cruise for the Fantasy to put her on her new embarkation schedule if the Wish does end up sailing on Saturdays.

Vancouver, a bustling west coast seaport in British Columbia, is among Canada’s densest, most ethnically diverse cities. A popular filming location, it’s surrounded by mountains, and also has thriving art, theatre and music scenes. Nawiliwili is located on the southeastern coast of the island of Kauai between Lihue and Nawiliwili Bay along Highway 51 near Ninini Point and the Huleia Stream.Kaua'i is divided into five major districts, or moku 'aina. Nawiliwili Bay is located in the moku 'aina of Puna on the southeastern coast. One meaning of puna is spring, and Puna has an abundance of springs and streams caused by its location on the windward side of the island. Around 1000 A.D., settlers from the Marquesas arrived, led by Punanuikaia'aina. He succeeded in creating a chiefdom independent of Kona in Puna.

Kahului is located in Maui County on the west side of the island of Maui between Wailuku and Lower Paia along Highway 32 near the West Maui Forest Reserve and the Pacific Ocean.Kahului is heart of Maui, and the only deep water port for the island. This is where the major cruise and container ships come in, the main airport, Kahului Airport is located here also. Kahului has great variety in shopping and services, but lacks the variety of fine restaurants that Lahaina has, although some of the local dining favorites reside here. There are few hotels and resorts in Kahului, there is however, a new golf course. There are four major shopping malls with the largest being the Kaahumanu Mall. Most of 'industrial' Maui is located in Kahului. It is here where one of the main power plants is located, most of Maui's service oriented businesses, and the greatest variety in shopping. Everything from small local stores, catering to residents, to large discount stores such as K-Mart and Costco. Kahului has grown a lot in the past few years, unfortunately the infrastructure has not. As a result traffic is congested most of the working day. The traffic can be especially heavy while exiting the Kahului Airport area. Rush hour traffic is especially bad, both in the afternoons and evenings, traffic from Paia and Upcountry bottleneck at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hana Highway. Allow a little extra time for travelling through this area of Maui.

The Polynesians arrived in the Hilo area about 1100 A.C. They eventually inhabited the shores of Hilo Bay, farmed their crops, fished and traded their goods along the Wailuku River.  In the late 1700’s, the days of King Kamehameha’s rule, Hilo was the center of political activity and social growth. It was the prime place for the King to build his army of ships designed for conquering the Hawaiian Islands. By 1791 native Hawaiians had traveled as far as the United States and China. The King befriended many of the foreigners who traveled to the islands. With such considerable traveling, the Hawaiian way of life soon became influenced by products ranging from iron to livestock to non-native seeds.    Hilo became a stopping place for explorers, whaling ships, traders and those curious about active volcanoes. By the 1900’s, Hilo had grown into a commercial center. The sugar industry was booming, a number of wharves had been constructed, the breakwater was begun and a new railroad connected Hilo with other parts of the island. Then in 1946 – and again in 1960 – two destructive tsunamis swept Hilo’s Bayfront causing the relocation of Hilo’s government and commercial life. When the town was rebuilt, a large park and roadway were situated between the buildings and the shoreline to absorb future tidal waves.   Besides being a rare surviving example of an Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo’s special charms. The local term, “mixed plate”, describes well the impact made by Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders and Europeans on Hilo’s mixed-race culture of today. All these ethnic groups blend in the faces of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse shopping opportunities, its small scale and its friendliness makes Hilo the perfect town in which to linger just a little longer.

Anyone lucky enough to be going to Honolulu doesn't have to give a reason for going. They can just say, "We're going to Honolulu," and imagination will take care of the rest. Moreover, Honolulu can probably live up to and even surpass whatever we imagine. World-famous beaches and tropical weather set the scene for an amazing mix of Pacific cultures in this Hawaiian capital. There is a reason why Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the nation's top travel destinations; in fact, there are several of them. Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand and the incredible nightlife. Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rainforests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors into some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum, combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city. The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial, commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II. Honolulu exhibits the best of Hawaii in every way. From its famous beaches to its incredible natural preserves, this town has attracted millions of people from around the world. Many of those visitors stayed, helping to make Hawaii one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse places to visit in the United States. Anyone lucky enough to be going to Hawaii knows that he won't be disappointed.

Main Dining

Rotational Dining:  The Disney Cruise Line method for making sure each guest experiences each themed dining environment onboard. Every evening you dine with the same tablemates and have the same servers as you "rotate" to one of the three main restaurants: Animator's Palate, Tiana's Place, and Triton's. You will be given your schedule when you board, so you'll know exactly when you'll enjoy the unique atmosphere of each restaurant.

Animator's Palate:  Inspired by the magic of Disney animation, this spacious yet stylized restaurant is filled with everything you'd expect to find inside an actual animator's studio. Character sketches, maquettes, light boxes, paint brushes, computer work stations and other tools of the animation trade delightfully decorate the venue; and scenes and characters from popular Disney films adorn the walls—creating a one-of-a-kind experience.

Tiana's Place:  Guests of Tiana's Place, the restaurant inspired by Princess Tiana in the Disney animated feature, "The Princess and the Frog," will be treated to a celebration of New Orleans dining and entertainment. Live music will be performed on the main stage, with rhythmic, toe-tapping notes of jazz, swing and blues setting the tone for the French Quarter supper club atmosphere. Chefs will cook up Tiana's recipes, drawing inspiration from the flavors and ingredients of the Louisiana bayou. Tiana's personal touch will be evident in the menu, the entertainment and throughout every detail in the restaurant. From Tiana's family photos to water lily-shaped candleholders to her framed culinary awards—all will help tell the timeless tale of Tiana's journey from waitress to frog to princess to proud restaurant owner.

Triton's:  This grand ballroom recalls a transatlantic ocean liner with a dazzling Art Deco theme. It brims with ornate chandeliers, stained glass walls and a mural with an "under the sea" theme. Enjoy a 4-course dinner with a distinct French-inspired twist.

Hawaii cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

Hawaii and cruising seem like a match made in heaven. You can experience all the beaches, water sports, lush scenic areas and Polynesian culture without having to settle for just one island — or deal with the hassle of flying between them.

In addition, you get a convenient home base to leave your stuff, enjoy evening entertainment without a drive and linger over dinner without worrying how much the bill will come to.

However, it's not all paradise in the Hawaii cruise world because itineraries are limited. Why? U.S. government regulations prohibit foreign-flagged ships from sailing between U.S. ports without visiting a foreign port.

Because most cruise ships are flagged in another country, they cannot offer interisland cruises. Only two lines currently offer those. The rest must sail long cruises at least one-way, if not round trip, from the west coast of North America.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If a Hawaii cruise sounds like the perfect getaway to you, you'll want to read up on which lines offer which types of itineraries, as well as which islands and ports you must visit.

Here, we've gathered all the information you need to know to choose the perfect Aloha State sailing for your travel style, budget and allotted vacation time.

Why cruise to Hawaii?

disney cruise around hawaii

I probably don't need to convince anyone why Hawaii is an amazing vacation destination. It has everything — gorgeous beaches, fabulous snorkeling and diving spots, scenic hiking trails, fascinating local culture and history, delicious cuisine, renowned resorts and golf courses, and plentiful waterfalls and rainbows.

Why should you cruise instead of booking a hotel or resort stay on land? The main reason is to sample more islands.

Most travelers stick to one, possibly two islands, during a Hawaii vacation. If you want to sample the highlights of several islands, from Volcanoes National Park near Hilo, Hawaii, to Kauai's Waimea Canyon and Napali Coast, it's much simpler to do that from a cruise ship.

Additionally, lodging prices in Hawaii can be high due to its popularity as a vacation destination. Restaurants are also more expensive than on the mainland because many staples have to be shipped in from afar.

On a cruise, you're free to sample Hawaiian cuisine during your time in port, but can take as many meals as you want on board, many of which are already covered in your cruise fare.

When do cruises go to Hawaii?

disney cruise around hawaii

You can sail to Hawaii year-round, but the itinerary options vary based on the month you choose. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only major cruise line to offer year-round, weeklong cruises.

If you're looking for a longer itinerary, sailing round trip from the west coast of North America, or a small-ship adventure cruise, you'll have the biggest selection of cruises between October and April.

The beginning and end of the Alaska season in the spring and fall is when you'll find one-way repositioning cruises either between Hawaii and Vancouver, British Columbia, or Seattle, or from the Pacific Northwest all the way to the South Pacific, stopping in Hawaii along the way.

The summer offers the fewest Hawaii cruise options.

Best Hawaii itineraries

disney cruise around hawaii

Cruises to Hawaii fall into three categories: weeklong interisland cruises, round-trip cruises sailing to/from the West Coast and one-way repositioning cruises.

The best cruise for you depends on how much vacation time you have, how many islands you want to visit, whether you're looking for overnight port stays and how you feel about multiple sea days in a row.

Interisland cruises

The best Hawaii itinerary in my opinion is Norwegian Cruise Line's seven-night round-trip Honolulu sailings on Pride of America. The U.S.-flagged ship is the only big ship able to sail interisland itineraries without calling on a foreign port.

The itinerary features two-day overnight visits to Maui and Kauai and stops in both Kona and Hilo on the Big Island, as well as scenic cruising along Kauai's famed Napali Coast. It's easy to book pre- or post-cruise stays in Honolulu to explore places like Waikiki Beach, Diamondhead Crater and Pearl Harbor.

For a completely different interisland cruise, UnCruise Adventures offers a more off-the-beaten-path, adventure-focused sailing on the 36-passenger Safari Explorer.

It also visits Maui and the island of Hawaii, as well as the smaller islands of Lanai and Molokai. Expect lots of water sports and nature-based outings, and daily plans that can change due to the weather or a whale sighting. These expedition cruises run from November to April.

Round-trip Hawaii cruises from the West Coast

Most of the major cruise lines offering seasonal Hawaii cruises — such as Carnival, Princess and Holland America — offer 14- to 18-night round-trip itineraries from West Coast ports such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and San Francisco, in California; Seattle; and Vancouver. These sailings run from the fall into the spring. Some lines offer just a few round trips while others offer months of Hawaii cruises.

The itineraries all follow a similar pattern: A four-day Pacific Ocean crossing, daily port stops in three or four Hawaii ports (occasionally with an overnight), another five days at sea, then a stop in Ensenada, Mexico, on the way home. If you're sailing from Vancouver, expect five days for the crossing and no visit to Mexico.

You may find some longer grand voyages sailing round trip from North America to Hawaii plus other South Pacific destinations. For example, Holland America offers some epic 35- to 51-night cruises round trip from San Diego

These Hawaii cruises are best for retirees, who have the time to enjoy leisurely ocean crossings on either end of the trip.

Repositioning cruises

The final type of Hawaii cruise is the one-way repositioning sailing, typically offered when ships are heading to or leaving Alaska. The cruise line schedules these sailings to swing by Hawaii on their way to the South Pacific or Australia or perhaps before the ship begins Mexico cruises from southern California or transits the Panama Canal to the Atlantic.

The shorter options, such as 10- and 11-night Hawaii cruises offered by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, sail between Vancouver and Honolulu, leaving you to book a one-way flight to or from Hawaii. Longer one-way sailings from upscale brands, such as Oceania, Seabourn and Silversea, will traverse the Pacific Ocean between Tahiti (or another far-flung island) and Vancouver or Seattle.

The shorter, one-way sailings are a good compromise for travelers who don't want to take a full two weeks or can't imagine 10 days at sea on one vacation but do want some relaxing time on the ship. They also allow pre- or post-cruise stays in Hawaii. The longer one-off journeys are more for folks wanting to explore a wide swath of the Pacific, with Hawaii being a small part of that deep dive.

Best Hawaii cruise lines

disney cruise around hawaii

It's no surprise that I find Norwegian Cruise Line to be one of the best Hawaii cruise lines because it offers a unique product that's a reasonable vacation length for most people and really allows its guests to experience many of Hawaii's highlights.

Princess Cruises is definitely the leader in the two-week, round-trip Hawaii cruise department, offering more sailings out of more homeports than any other line. Carnival , Holland America and Viking also offer this type of sailing, but not as frequently. Holland America is a great choice for round-trip sailings that explore deep into the South Pacific.

Sister lines Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean are good bets for those hybrid one-way cruises from the West Coast to Hawaii.

Seabourn , Silversea and Oceania offer upscale accommodations, fine dining and multiple fare inclusions for travelers looking to journey in style across the Pacific Ocean, stopping in Hawaii along the way. Seabourn and Silversea feature smaller ships, more fare inclusions and higher prices than Oceania.

UnCruise Adventures is the line for travelers who want to get off the beaten path on a small ship with a flexible itinerary. These sailings are perfect for active folks who want to get up close to nature. You don't have to be a true cruiser to love UnCruise, but you do need a large budget, as intimate adventures don't come cheap.

Things to do in Hawaii

disney cruise around hawaii

Whether you're looking for utter relaxation or an adrenaline rush, you'll find plenty of things to do in Hawaii. The islands have much to offer families, couples and friends of all ages.

Obviously, a top attraction is Hawaii's many beaches. You can plop down in the sand on beautifully manicured strands of white sand or find more rugged volcanic black sand beaches. Look for beach parks with sheltered swimming areas for families or find a secluded beach away from popular tourist areas. Some beaches can have strong currents or rough seas during certain times of the year, so always exercise caution when swimming.

Water sports are also a big draw, whether that's surfing Hawaii's waves or snorkeling with green turtles in Maui. Kayak out to sea or along Kauai's Wailua River, or try your hand at kite-surfing or stand-up paddleboarding. For a more chill afternoon out on the waves, consider a whale-watching cruise, sunset sail or scenic boat ride along the Napali Coast.

Nature lovers can find a variety of hikes within lush green forests or along the rocky landscape of the Waimea Canyon. Maui's road to Hana is a must-do if you like twisty roads and cascading waterfalls. Watch the sun rise or set, bike down the extinct Haleakala volcano, or visit a live one at Volcanoes National Park near Hilo on the island of Hawaii.

Many travelers enjoy learning about Hawaiian culture and history. Attend a luau where you can feast on Hawaiian cuisine and enjoy music, dancing and fire play. Some take place on plantations where you can discover more about local agriculture. Or, stop by historic attractions, such as Honolulu's Iolani Palace or the Big Island's city of refuge, to learn about the ancient Polynesian culture or the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Best Hawaii cruise ports

disney cruise around hawaii

The islands of Hawaii only offer a few cruise ports for ships to visit. (UnCruise Adventures is the exception, calling in a few smaller places that the big ships can't go.) All of them are top-notch, so it's hard to say which one is the best overall. Certainly, some ports are better for different types of activities.

The following Hawaii ports are the ones commonly found on cruise itineraries.

Honolulu, Oahu

Honolulu is known for Pearl Harbor, where you can visit the USS Arizona Memorial Museum, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, a submarine museum and an aviation museum. Cruisers can catch some rays at Waikiki Beach or hike the Diamond Head crater.

Learn about Hawaiian history at the Mauna 'Ala royal mausoleum and the Iolani Palace, or Hawaiian culture at a luau or the Polynesian Cultural Center. You can also take a tour to Oahu's North Shore. Oahu is the turn-around port for Pride of America, so travelers should consider a pre- or post-cruise stay to see the sights.

Nawiliwili, Kauai

The small but mighty Kauai is one of the best Hawaii ports for outdoor, nature-based adventure. Get your cameras out for the rocky landscapes of the Waimea Canyon and the breathtaking cliffs of the Napali Coast. If you like hiking or kayaking, you've come to the right island, but you can also take it easy on any number of nearby beaches.

Take a riverboat along the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto, or hop a tour bus to see where many of your favorite movies were filmed. It's also a good spot for a luau if your ship stays in port late enough.

Hilo, Hawaii

The Big Island is the only island offering two major ports for cruise ships: Hilo on the east coast and Kona on the west. Hilo is the jumping-off point to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can hike through a lava tube or watch steam venting from the still-active volcano.

The area is also home to numerous waterfalls you can visit, such as Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls, as well as black-sand beaches. Kayak or snorkel in Hilo Bay, or — for something different — visit the Volcano Winery to sample vintages made both with grapes and local fruits.

Related: How to choose the best Hawaiian island for you

Kona, Hawaii

The second cruise port on the island of Hawaii, Kona is one of the best ports for visiting a coffee plantation and sampling local Hawaiian coffee. For travelers more interested in ancient Polynesian history, the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, the site of an old city of refuge, is a fascinating place to visit. Otherwise, Kona offers plenty of beaches, snorkeling opportunities and boat and submarine tours.

Lahaina or Kahului, Maui

Maui also has two cruise ports, but they serve the same area and attractions. The difference is that Kahului is in an industrial area near the airport. Cruise ships dock there, but you'll need to take a tour or other transportation to see the sights.

Lahaina is a major tourist destination for its restaurants, shops and boat tours, but ships must anchor and transport passengers to shore via tender boats.

Must-sees on Maui include the extinct volcano Haleakala (for sunset or sunrise visits or bike rides down the steep slopes), the twisty road to Hana with its waterfall views and many gorgeous white-sand beaches. Maui is the best Hawaii cruise port for whale watching in season or snorkeling in its clear waters. Visit the Maui Ocean Center to check out more sea life while staying dry.

When to book a Hawaii cruise

disney cruise around hawaii

The earlier you book a Hawaii cruise, the better. That's because the cruise lines offer comparatively few Hawaii sailings as compared to Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, for example.

Norwegian Cruise Line bases only one ship in the region; other lines only sail to the islands seasonally. Booking early will not only guarantee you get the cabin type you want on the sail date you prefer, but may also get you the lowest prices and promotional booking bonuses (i.e. free stuff). In addition, unless you live on the West Coast, a Hawaii cruise will require a long flight either to California or Honolulu, so you'll want plenty of time to find an airfare deal or available award seat.

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise

disney cruise around hawaii

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise depends on which cruise you're taking. If you're on a weeklong sailing on casual NCL, you can skip the dressy clothes and prioritize casual outfits that work with whatever beachy or sporty excursions you've got planned in Hawaii. Sun hats, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and water-friendly shoes are all must-pack items. Don't forget your camera (or waterproof case for your cellphone) and binoculars for whale watching.

Travelers on a longer Hawaii sailing on a line like Princess will want to bring nicer clothes for dinners on board, as well as plenty of activities for all those sea days. That could include books or an e-reader, a packable board game, a knitting project or a journal. UnCruise passengers should pack hiking boots, moisture-wicking athletic clothing, plenty of swimsuits and waterproof bags to protect their gear.

Bottom line

A cruise can be an ideal way to explore multiple Hawaiian islands in one trip and save on costs such as dinner and car rentals.

However, unlike in other cruise regions, travelers are limited in the itineraries and times of the year they can sail. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America is a great way to visit the islands in just a week, but fans of leisurely trips with lots of sea days should look at round-trip cruises from California.

Once you've decided how you want to cruise Hawaii, you can seek out the best cruise fares so you're ready to say "Aloha!" to an incredible vacation when the right deal pops up.

I would love to see a Disney Hawaii cruise. I bet it will happen once the new ships are built - they'll put one of the older ones on a Hawaii itinerary. Especially with Aulani, it would be shocking if they didn't!

Disney Wonder Hawaii Cruise: Day Three – Hilo, Hawaii

disney cruise around hawaii

On the third day of our Disney Wonder cruise, I woke up just after 6:00am ready for our day in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Due to our long day in Maui the day before, I had slept well despite there being a lot of movement on the ship overnight. After having a cup of tea and getting dressed, we walked up to a busy Cabanas and enjoyed our breakfast with a view of Hilo Harbor as we were docking. It looked to be the start of a beautiful day outside with both blue and grey skies surrounding us.

disney cruise around hawaii

After finishing breakfast, we watched the “Good Morning Disney Wonder” show on the television as we waited for the ship to be cleared for disembarkation which it was at 8:30am. After leaving our stateroom, we walked along Deck 4 before walking through the lobby atrium and past the shops (knowing that we would finally be able to get our Disney Cruise shopping fix later that day) and down the stairs to the gangway which was once again located on Deck 1 Forward.

We left the Disney Wonder at 8:50am and thankfully there was a taxi rank right outside the terminal building with taxis waiting as the Alamo shuttle bus was not operating which we were already aware of from reading online. We had a great taxi driver who told us that our plans for the day were easily doable in the time that we had in port and he also said he was very happy that tourism is returning to Hawaii after a difficult last two years for him.

The 3.5 mile journey to Hilo Airport only took ten minutes and cost $16 and we could clearly see the Disney Wonder docked at the port on the opposite side of the airfield. As Hilo Airport and the car rental facility there is so small, this is definitely the one island in Hawaii where you need to book a car in advance (we had booked a whole year beforehand) especially on a busy day in peak season and/or when a ship is docked in port. Despite there only being one desk at the Alamo kiosk, this was the quickest pickup so far of the trip and we were given a Jeep which was the same type of car that we had had the day before in Kahului.

We left Hilo Airport at 9:20am which was only thirty minutes after we had disembarked the Disney Wonder which was so quick and our day was already going perfectly to plan. After our long day in Maui the previous day, we knew that this day on the Big Island would be a lot shorter and a lot more relaxing as everything we wanted to see and do was a quick and easy drive from Hilo. There really was no need to book expensive Port Adventures in Hilo as renting a car was so simple and affordable – even booking a private car independently with a driver for the day would be a great option if you cannot drive. Our first destination for the day was Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which was 29 miles and an easy and straightforward forty minute drive from Hilo. The entrance fee of $30 was covered by the America the Beautiful annual parks pass that we had purchased the day before at Haleakalā National Park on the island of Maui.

Before our trip to Hawaii, we had downloaded the National Park Service app and had saved the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park guide for offline use – there is very little mobile signal when you are there so make sure to come prepared. There is a self guided tour section for each park within the app with a list of suggested itineraries including one called “A First Visit” which we followed whilst we were there which included various lookout points, the Thurston Lava Tube as well as the Devastation Trail. The first stop on our tour was the Uekahuna scenic lookout which at over 4000ft is the highest point on the rim of Kaluapele for some amazing views looking out over the caldera of Kilauea.

Our next stop was the nearby Kilauea Overlook for more views of Kaluapele and the Halema’uma’u Crater. You can actually walk between Uekahuna and the Kilauea Overlook as they are so close together.

disney cruise around hawaii

After stopping to look at the Wahinekapu (Steaming Bluff) and the Ha’akulamanu (Sulphur Banks), we drove ten minutes to Nahuku (the Thurston Lava Tube). It was a short downhill walk from the parking area on the road to the entrance of the lava tube and even though I had read that it was lit up during the day from 8:00am to 8:00pm, it was not the day we were there so I simply used the light from my iPhone so I could see where I was stepping whilst it was all dark around us.

disney cruise around hawaii

Our last stop at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was the Devastation Trail which is a one mile round trip walk from the parking lot to the Pu’upua’i Overlook and which was completely empty. The weather was also crazy at this point and constantly changing with rain one minute followed shortly by bright blue sunny skies so come prepared for all weathers and remember to wear layers when visiting as it will also be freezing cold due to the altitude.

After two and a half hours we left Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and started the hour long drive to Akaka Falls State Park which is located just twenty five minutes north of Hilo. We made a quick stop for coffee and a bite to eat on the drive (as we did not want to get as hangry as we had the day before) and also stopped at the Scenic Outlook Park where we could see the Disney Wonder docked on the opposite side of Hilo Bay.

disney cruise around hawaii

Akaka Falls is a 422 foot high waterfall located just over three miles from the town of Honomu. Entrance fees to Akaka Falls State Park are $5 per person as well as $10 parking fee per car though there are also a few spaces on the side of the road outside the entrance to the small car park if you want to save some money. You can pay these fees at the machine at the start of the trail and you can only pay by credit card as no cash is accepted. The Akaka Falls Circle Route starts right at the parking lot and is a fully paved 0.4 mile long path and you can walk in either direction and as the trail is signposted, it is impossible to get lost We walked the suggested longer route (turning right at the start of the trailhead) so we could see both Kahuna Falls ahead in the distance before reaching the incredible and beautiful Akaka Falls which took just under fifteen minutes before continuing the loop back to the start of the trail which took another five minutes. However be aware that no matter which direction you walk, Akaka Falls is not accessible as there are a lot of steps both up and down so it might not be suitable for anyone who has difficulty managing stairs.

After spending forty minutes at Akaka Falls (you really do not need long there), we made our way back to Hilo and drove along Banyan Drive through the Liliuokalani Gardens close to the port to get another view of the Disney Wonder before heading back to the airport to drop off our car. We were back outside the airport terminal at 3:25pm and as Hilo Airport is so quiet, there was a phone in the arrivals area we had to use to order a taxi to come and pick us up. Our all aboard time was not until 4:45pm so we had plenty of time and were not worried at all when we were told that it would be about a ten minute wait for a taxi which was absolutely fine. We had already worked out that even if there had been no taxis available, we could easily walk back to the port and still be onboard in plenty of time. However whilst we were waiting, another couple from our cruise also called for a taxi and got very rude and irate and started shouting at the person on the other end of the phone (as well as at each other) when they were told there would be a short wait. When our taxi arrived a few minutes later, they started shouting at us and asking if they could share our taxi back to the port which we refused. Not only did we not want to share a car with people who did not seem very nice at all but as we had over a week of our cruise to go (with one more antigen test to do in Vancouver), we still wanted to be extra careful so the last thing we wanted was to be squashed into a taxi with two complete strangers. We were back at the Port of Hilo at 3:45pm (an hour before the all aboard time) and joined a very long and slow line through the terminal which took just over twenty minutes to reach the front to get back onboard the Disney Wonder. I noticed that the angry couple from the airport were still angry and shouty when they arrived back at the port only five minutes after us which made us even more relieved that we had not shared our taxi ride with them.

When we finally got back to our stateroom, we both did a double take when we noticed that we had been left a Disney Cruise Line bathrobe each along with some slippers as well as some Elemis toiletries. Neither of us have any idea who or why but it was a really lovely surprise to come back to that afternoon and we really appreciated the gesture. We also decided that now was the time to do some much needed laundry as we were rapidly running out of clean clothes. Even though the laundry room was quiet, finding an empty machine was difficult as so many people were leaving their clothes in the washers and dryers for hours so no one else was able to use them – you even get a message in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app to tell you when the machine you are using has finished! Whilst we were in the laundry room, Captain Fabian made an announcement to say that it would be 289 nautical miles to reach our next port of Nawiliwili on the island of Kauai and we should arrive there at 10:00am the following day.

We were both hungry after our day exploring Hilo so decided to get some food from up on Deck 9 and just as we were walking towards Pinocchio’s Pizzeria and Pete’s Boiler Bites, we met Hawaiian Stitch next to the Goofy Pool. It was so fitting that our first proper meet and greet on this cruise was Hawaiian Stitch as back on our last “normal” cruise on the Disney Fantasy in 2019 when we were so looking forward to our 2020 Hawaii cruise, he was the last meet and greet that we had on our final day at Castaway Cay . This was just yet another random coincidence on this trip when it really felt like things were meant to be.

disney cruise around hawaii

The When You Wish Upon a Star horn sounded as the Disney Wonder left the dock at 5:00pm. It was the first time so far on this cruise that sailaway had happened during daylight so we walked around Deck 10 several times taking plenty of photos as we left Hilo and said goodbye to the Big Island.

disney cruise around hawaii

I had been keeping a close eye on the time and just before 6:00pm I walked down to the shops on Deck 4 just before they opened and there was already two huge lines of people that reached all the way back to each entrance of the Walt Disney Theatre. I’m not sure if the lines were longer than they were on the Disney Magic at Sea staycation cruises (which were ridiculous) but it was very close. Thankfully when the doors opened, the lines disappeared very quickly as everyone was running to all of the Hawaii merchandise and not the opposite end of White Caps which was where I headed to finally get my much wanted Disney Wonder Spirit Jersey. Along with my Spirit Jersey and the Christmas decoration that I was unable to get on our last cruise on the Disney Magic, I also managed to get the Hawaii pin, ornament and Tervis as they had plenty of stock (which lasted all the way to the end of the cruise) and even though both the short and long sleeved Hawaii T-shirts had quickly disappeared off the shelves when people had grabbed handfuls of them as soon as the shop opened, they brought more of the short sleeve ones out so I also was able to get one of them too – though I was not sure what size I needed but I was told I could get both sizes and then try them on back in our room and then simply return the one that I did not want. I was not bothered about not getting the long sleeve Hawaii t-shirt as I was just happy that I had been able to get the spirit jersey which was what I had wanted the most on this cruise especially as the Disney Wonder is my favourite ship. Once we were back in our stateroom, I tried on both of the T-Shirts that I had just bought and thankfully one fitted perfectly so I put the other to one side to return to the shop once they were a little quieter later in the cruise. After folding up our laundry which had now finished, we once again walked around Deck 10 to kill some time before dinner.

disney cruise around hawaii

We had not met many characters so far on this cruise so we made it our mission to try and see as many as we could on this night especially as we knew they would be wearing their Hawaiian outfits which we had never seen before. As the meet and greets are still socially distanced, it is not advertised on the Disney Cruise Line app which character will be out at a certain time – it simply says “Character Photo” and a time and place. However the Cast Members were incredible and just by asking you could always find out exactly who would be out each day and at what time. There were four “Character Photo” times listed at 7:15pm, 7:30pm, 7:45pm and 8:00pm on both Decks 3 and 4 in the Lobby Atrium so before we had dinner we were able to meet Donald, Daisy, Chip, Dale, Minnie, Mickey, Goofy and Pluto.

disney cruise around hawaii

Our dinner was in Animator’s Palate and we had exactly the same table as on our Disney Magic at Sea staycation cruise from Southampton. However unlike the staycations, on this night we had the Drawn to Magic show where the screens around the restaurant show various Disney characters being drawn, coloured in and finally animated. I was not feeling that hungry (probably due to the pizza I had already eaten that afternoon) but two of my favourite dishes were on the menu that night so I had to get them. I ordered the Butternut Squash Soup as well as the incredible Black Truffle Pasta Purseittes as my main course – they are actually on the appetiser menu but as they are so good, I always have a double portion which had been suggested to me by one of our servers on a previous cruise and then skipped dessert as by that point, I really was full!

disney cruise around hawaii

Towards the end of the meal, a montage of Disney animation is shown before Sorcerer Mickey arrives in Animator’s Palate as the music from Fantasmic plays. It had been a few years since I had last seen this show so I had actually completely forgotten about Mickey making an appearance so it was a lovely surprise.

disney cruise around hawaii

After dinner Donald, Daisy, Chip and Dale were back in the Lobby Atrium with very little lines compared to earlier in the evening. However as we already had some photos, we did not wait to see them again that night. Both of the shops were also a lot calmer than they had been a few hours beforehand and and I was really happy and relieved that I got my Spirit Jersey when I did as they only had one size left which was huge. Back in our stateroom was one of the best towel animals I have ever seen – I really could not stop laughing!

disney cruise around hawaii

We were both so tired at this point and it was impossible to stay awake any later even if you wanted to. The combination of both the eleven hour time difference from home as well as all of the long days exploring Hawaii was taking its toll so we decided to have an early night ready for the next two days exploring Kauai.
