The 11 new tour dates include additional shows in East Rutherford, New Jersey; Foxborough, Massachusetts; Phoenix, Arizona; Toronto, Ontario and Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. A third show has also been added to his run at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Tickets for the new slate of concerts go on sale April 6 at 10 a.m. local time via John’s website , with a limited number of VIP packages and American Express card member presale tickets available beginning on March 30 at 10 a.m. local time.

“It’s hard to believe that after tomorrow in St. Louis, I’ll have just a handful of shows left before I wrap up my final arena performances in the United States,” John said in a statement. “This year will see my grand finale in North America, playing stadiums all around the country, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had. Thank you for sharing this journey with me. I cherish these memories we’re making together. It has been nothing short of incredible and I look forward to seeing you very soon one last time, on my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.”

John’s epic farewell tour has experienced some bumps along the way, including the postponement of two Dallas shows in January after the musician was diagnosed with Covid-19. At the time, he had just resumed his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour  after a nearly two-year delay  caused by the pandemic , as well as an  ill-timed hip injury .

Earlier this month, the singer shared a new video for “ Finish Line ,” his collaborative track with Stevie Wonder that appears on John’s all-star 2021 album, The Lockdown Sessions .

Elton John announces final dates for 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road' tour

NEW YORK — Elton John has announced the final dates for his farewell tour, which includes stops at big stadiums in the U.S.

“Elton John Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour” will visit Frankfurt, Germany, on May 27, 2022 and will make several stops throughout Europe, including Milan, Liverpool and Paris.

John also announced dates in North America, kicking off those shows on July 15, 2022, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. He will also perform at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey; Soldier Field in Chicago; Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta; Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee; and Minute Maid Park in Houston. He will wrap the North American trek with two shows at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on November 19 and 20, 2022.

In 2023 he will play in New Zealand and Australia before wrapping up the tour, which began in 2018.

“The shows that I announce today will be my final tour dates ever in North America and Europe,” John said in a statement. “I’m going to go out in the biggest possible way, performing at my very best, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had, playing in places that have meant so much to me throughout my career.”

In September, the pop icon first announced that his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour” would return to North America on Jan. 19, 2022, in New Orleans. John also announced rescheduled 2022 dates for Houston, Detroit, New York City, Miami, Toronto and Montreal due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’ve been enjoying my time at home with the family while the world navigates its way through the COVID pandemic. But, I really miss being on the road and performing for my beloved fans in my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour,” John said at the time. “While the scientists are making great progress, we are making big plans for a return to touring that will allow us to ensure the health and safety of everyone.”

The Oscar, Grammy and Tony-winning star’s final tour kicked off to a sold-out audience in September 2018.

Elton John’s Farewell Tour Comes to an End With $939 Million and 6 Million Tickets

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour wrapped on Saturday, July 8, extending its lead as the highest-grossing tour of all time.

By Eric Frankenberg

Elton John

The time has come: Elton John ’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road played its final show on Saturday, July 8. Almost five years after launching, the tour grossed $939.1 million and sold 6 million tickets according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore.

Kid Cudi Cancels Insano World Tour After Breaking Foot: 'The Injury Is Much More Serious Than I…

After claiming the title of the highest-grossing tour in Boxscore history earlier this year, John extended his lead with 49 arena dates in Europe, following an arena run in the Spring of 2019 and a sweep of stadiums last year. There were four North American stints, also volleying between arenas and stadiums, plus two blocks of shows in Oceania.

After all of those shows, all around the world, John made it to the top of the heap. Watch below as, from September 2018 to July 2023, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour surpassed the biggest tours ever on its way to No. 1.

John has been patient, ranking among the biggest acts on various Boxscore charts since 2018. Starting that year , he was No. 22 on the year-end Top Tours chart, then No. 4 in 2019 , No. 1 in 2020 , and returned in 2022 at No. 2. In between, he was No. 1 on midyear charts for 2019 and 2020 , and then No. 2 in 2022 and 2023 .

John has also been the king of Billboard ’s monthly Top Tours chart. He crowned the inaugural list for February 2019 and returned to the top six more times, each time extending his lead for the most months on top. He was No. 2 another eight times, plus five months between Nos. 3-5.

In all, that’s 20 months in the top five of 27 total appearances. Charts for June and July haven’t yet been published, though John will likely score his 28th and 29th appearances when they do.

John’s world tour divides its 330 shows (one of those, his set at Glastonbury Festival, does not factor into his gross or attendance since it’s a multi-artist festival) into 183 in North America, 101 in Europe and 46 in Oceania. See below for how his grosses in each continent stacked on top of one another, combining to more than $930 million.

North America – specifically mainland U.S. and Canada – was the most fruitful region for John’s farewell tour, amounting to $567.7 million and 3.5 million tickets. That’s 61% of the world tour’s total gross. Europe comes next with $218 million and 1.5 million tickets, followed by Australia and New Zealand, combining for $134 million and 889,000 tickets.

When Ed Sheeran set his record and wrapped The Divide Tour in August 2019, John’s tour had only grossed $217.8 million from its first 108 shows. With less than a third of Sheeran’s gross, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour was too young to be among predictions for all-time challengers. Plus, the tour had stuck to arenas, limiting its potential ceiling. It wasn’t until May 2022 that John stretched to stadiums.

The arena portion of John’s tour ended last spring, when it had already grossed $488.7 million from 219 shows. In the 61 stadium dates that followed, he added $341.5 million. All said, the stadium portion amounts to just 19% of all Farewell shows, but 36% of its earnings.

After breaking Sheeran’s record, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour became the first concert tour to gross $800 million and then $900 million.

Further, John’s final shows further extend his lead as the highest-grossing and best-selling soloist in Boxscore history. Over 1,623 reported shows, he’s grossed $1.98 billion and sold 20.6 million tickets. Farewell tours haven’t always actually been a final farewell, but if this is it, John is ending his historic touring career comfortably on top.

5 Great Americana-Influenced Elton John Songs in Honor of His 77th Birthday

H appy Birthday to Elton John, who turned 77 on March 25, 2024. John has had an incredibly successful music career that’s seen him explore a variety of genres, including baroque pop, pop rock, hard rock, disco, show tunes, and more.

An interesting aspect about the British singer/songwriter’s music, particularly during his career’s early years, was the strong influence of Americana on his music, including blues, gospel, country, and folk. John was a huge fan of Leon Russell, while his lyricist, Bernie Taupin, had a fascination with the Old West, cowboy movies, and Southern U.S. culture. In addition, both John and Taupin were enamored with the mostly Canadian roots-rock group The Band.

[RELATED: Metallica Honors Elton John with Special Performance at the 2024 Gershwin Prize]

These influences led John and Taupin to create quite a few memorable Americana-inspired songs that were featured on his first several albums. In honor of John’s birthday, here’s a look at 5 great Americana-influenced songs from his early heyday:

“Take Me to the Pilot” (1970)

“Take Me to the Pilot” was a song from John’s self-titled second album, which was released in 1970. The dramatic, gospel-infused song features John soulfully belting out enigmatic lyrics like a preacher possessed with the Holy Spirit.

Both Taupin and John have said that they have no idea what the lyrics to “Take Me to the Pilot” mean.

Interestingly, the song originally was released in the U.S. as a single, with “Your Song” as its B-side. However, radio stations embraced the latter tune, which became John’s breakthrough hit, peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Border Song” (1970)

“Border Song” also was featured on the Elton John album. The uplifting gospel-inspired song features lyrics that call for unity between people of different races.

John said in a 1975 book that he wrote the third verse of “Border Song,” making it among his only tunes to which he’s contributed lyrics.

“Border Song” was the first single released from Elton John; it peaked at No. 92 on the Hot 100. Aretha Franklin covered the song in 1970, and her version reached No. 37 on the same chart.

“Country Comfort” (1971)

“Country Comfort” was lead track of John’s third studio album, Tumbleweed Connection , which probably was the Elton record most influenced by American music.

Offering up his best attempt at a Southern drawl, John sings about the pleasures of rural life in the American South. Fiddle, steel guitar, and acoustic guitar add to the down-home, country feel of the song.

Rod Stewart recorded a cover of “Country Comfort” that was released in June 1970, several months before John’s own version was issued.

“Burn Down the Mission” (1971)

“Burn Down the Mission” is the final track on Tumbleweed Connection . The song is a cinematic country-gospel ballad that’s apparently about members of an impoverished community who try to take action against a wealthy man who’s oppressing them.

John regularly played “Burn Down the Mission” in concert during his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour in 2022 and 2023. It was one of the only non-hits included in John’s set on the trek.

Phil Collins covered “Burn Down the Mission” for the 1991 John/Taupin tribute album Two Rooms . Toto recorded their own version for their 2002 covers album Through the Looking Glass .

“Holiday Inn” (1971)

“Holiday Inn” was featured on John’s fourth studio album, Madman Across the Water . The tune is a celebratory country-rock song about being in a band on tour in the U.S.

The song is enhanced by Davey Johnstone’s fluid mandolin playing throughout, and ends with an infectious, jangly, bluegrass-inspired solo.

Pete Townshend Now Says There Will Not Be a Who Farewell Tour: ‘I Was Being Sarcastic’

Pete Townshend

It turns out that when Pete Townshend recently told the New York Times that he was planning on a final Who farewell tour, he was “being sarcastic,” he told the “ Sound Up!” podcast in an interview released today (April 16).

“It feels to me like there’s one thing the Who can do, and that’s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die,” he told the Times in an interview published last month.

Popular on Variety

When asked about that line in relation to his infamous boast — “I hope I die before I get old” — from the Who’s 1965 song “My Generation,” he continued, “That’s a twist, in a sense. ‘Slit Skirts’ was an honest confession of how I didn’t like what I’d become. When I wrote [‘My Generation’], I was celebrating the fact that I was young — I was 18 and surrounded by old people. Now, everybody seems younger. But in those days, everybody seemed older and they all seemed to be messed up, either miserable or poor or working too hard or complaining about something. The song was about, ‘I’m never gonna be like you if I’m old,’ and I don’t think I am like them. I’m happy and I’m struggling still, and I think I’m operating for the greater good — touch wood!” (Hear the full 50-minute interview here .)

However, even his comment to the Times showed a distaste for touring as the Who. Immediately after his statement to the paper above, he said, “I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with the Who. If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money. My idea of an ‘ordinary lifestyle’ is pretty elevated.” As always, time will tell.

“Sound Up!” is hosted by former MTV VJ Mark Goodman and top music journalist Alan Light (both formerly of SiriusXM’s “Debatable”), is produced by Roger Coletti and distributed by Revolver Podcasts.
