Getting out and enjoying nature is one of the greatest pleasures of camping. But if you’re an avid fisher, you may run into the issue of ‘where to store a fishing rod in an RV.’ Check out these 11 RV fishing rod storage ideas.

Hopefully one of them will work for you and your RV.

Where to store a fishing rod in an RV?

Some of the ideas in this article are commercial products intended for fishing rod storage, and some of them are clever DIY ideas devised by RV’ers like you.

1) Store in the Shower

A lot of people in the Facebook groups I’m in say they store their fishing rods in their shower. They just prop them upright against the shower wall.

2) Lay on the Bed

This is another easy option for storing your fishing rod. I read a man’s comment in an online group where he said that his fishing rod was too expensive to store anywhere else. 🙂

3) Store your fishing rod in zippered rod bags…

There are tons of fishing rod storage bags out there. (My telescoping rod came with its own storage bag.)

The above fishing rod storage bag is just one of several I found on Amazon. It is available in 2 different sizes depending on your needs.

It is available in a 130cm size (just over 51-inches), and a 150cm size (59-inches).

If you have minimal fishing gear a compact case like this could double as your tackle box too. It has 3 main interior compartments, and 2 pockets on the outside for extra tackle and gear.

4) Fly Fishing Rod Storage Tubes

This fly fishing rod storage tube has a simple tube design with a zippered end.

This tube comes in two size. It is intended to hold a 9-foot long fly fishing rod , but which storage tube you buy will depend on your particular rod.

Does your fly fishing rod separate into 3 pieces or 4 pieces? ( Some rods break down into 2,3,4 and more pieces!)

The company Clear Creek makes this in a version to store a 3-piece fishing rod , and they make a version that holds a 4-piece fly fishing pole.

It is a popular option for storing your fly fishing rod.

5) Inside a PVC tube mounted in RV basement

DIY PVC RV hacks are everywhere on the internet. And using a PVC pipe to store a fishing rod is just another way to use this plumbing material. Mount the PVC pipe in your RV basement (AKA the pass-through…or storage area), and then insert your fishing rod into the tube . You may have to remove the reel depending on the diameter of the pipe, or you could cut a notch in the pipe to accommodate the reel.

6) Inside your RV Bumper or Bumper Storage Tube

If your RV already has a hollow bumper for storage, you could potentially store your rod in there. You may to have to remove the reel and just put the fishing rods inside the bumper. (Many people already have their blackwater hose in here though.)

If your RV doesn’t have a storage bumper, the company V alterra makes the above adjustable storage tube that you mount to the bumper of your RV. It is intended for RV sewer hoses, but you could use for fishing rods too.

Because your rods will bounce around inside these tubes or bumpers, you should wrap your rods in cloth or foam or prevent damage during travel days.

7) Berkeley Fishing Rod Holders (horizontal or vertical storage)

Lots of RV’ers use these in their trailers. But do you travel over really rough roads?

The product shown above is the horizontal 6-rod holder by Berkley . You can get creative with these and mount them as it suits your particular RV.

• Some people mount them to the walls of their storage area (the pass-through compartment)
• You could try mounting these to the “ceiling” of the RV basement area (pass-through) to prevent them from getting damaged on the floor by tools or other equipment.
• You could potentially even mount them to a wall inside your RV

They also make a vertical fishing rod holder that you can find on Amazon . (It is shown below.)

8) Mount a Broom and Mop Holder to the wall of RV basement

This is a DIY idea that mimics what you can accomplish with the Berkley fishing rod holder shown above.

But instead of a dedicated fishing rod holder you use a broom holder mounted to the wall.

Place the handle of the rods into the broom-holder clips, and on the other end use hooks to hold up the tips. (So the rod is suspended horizontally along the length of the wall.)

9) Fishing rod holder with straps

Once again this is similar to the RV fishing rod storage ideas I just mentioned but this one has the benefit of a strap to help keep your rods in place . This may be especially helpful if you traverse really bumpy roads in your pursuit of catching the big one.

It is made by attwood. It comes as a set of two. You mount them on the wall so one holder will hold the handle of the rods, and the other holder will hold the tips.

10) Wall-mounted, or ceiling-mounted Wooden Fishing Rod holder

The company “Old Cedar Outfitters” makes this attractive fishing rod holder. You can mount it to your ceiling (as shown above), or on a wall.

It wouldn’t be great for travel days, but it would work well for once you’re set up at your campsite.

Just grab your fishing rod off the rack and you’re ready to go.

On travel days you could tie your rods into place, or lay them on your bed like we saw earlier in this article.

If you’re handy with wood, you could create your own wooden fishing rod holder. Creating a wooden DIY solution like this (with slight modification) could also give you a spot to hang a broom, fire pokers and wiener-roasting sticks. But you’ll probably want to have some eye-hooks on the ends of the wood so you can use a bungee cord to strap your fishing rods in place.

11) Hang your Fishing Rods Using Fabric Straps

This could be a good RV fishing rod storage idea for people that don’t want to screw into their walls.

You could use a strong Command Hooks to hold the metal D-hooks on this fishing rod storage webbing.

Such a cool idea. But would it work for your RV?

This version shown is the 6-rod holder, but they also make a 9-rod holder if you go fishing with a large family.

If you were handy you could make something similar using a stapler and nylon strapping (like the packaging that comes around appliances). Staple the strapping to a piece of wood leaving pockets to hold your fishing rod.

One thing I want to point out is that NOT every idea will work for every RV’er.

You’ll need to analyze your needs and find one that works for you. Find an option that suits your RV and the dimensions of your fishing rod too!

How To Pack Fishing Gear in Your RV

Getting our fishing gear packed in an organized fashion is essential, especially with limited RV space . Plus, fishing rods are fragile. The goal is to avoid tangled and damaged rods during transport and make sure hooks and any sharp objects stay secure. It saves us time and headaches. Organized gear means more time fishing and less time rummaging around for fishing gear.

To pack fishing gear swiftly and securely in an RV, here are some simple tips seasoned anglers and casual fishing folks can live by.

Store Fishing Rods and Reels in a Carrying Case

Lucky for anglers who are always traveling, there are plenty of rod carrying cases made specifically for fishing rods . These cases protect your fishing gear and are easy to grab and go, whether you’re packing up the RV or taking out your gear to head to the next fishing hotspot. Rod carrying cases usually come with compartments made to fit multiple rods and reels, are easy to store, and are very portable. You can find durable fabric cases as well as sturdy waterproof hard cases. Rod carrying cases can easily be stored inside your RV or pass-through storage.

Don’t Pass Up the Pass-Through Storage

The pass-through storage on an RV is basically made for fishing gear. If you love fishing as much as you love camping, then consider buying an RV with pass-through storage. This area is long enough to hold a wide range of rod sizes and the best part is that you don’t have to break down any multi-piece rods.

All your gear will be easily accessible on either side of the RV as you’re heading out for a day of fishing. Simply grab and go. You can easily fit any tackle box and rod carrying case in the pass-through storage. You can up your organization game by installing rod holders either on the ceiling or walls of your pass-through storage. 

Install a Rod Holder Storage Rack

Speaking of rod holder storage racks, these convenient rod storage systems are a great way to keep your fishing gear accessible and organized. Storage racks can be mounted horizontally, vertically, on a wall, or ceiling, and sometimes suctioned onto windows depending on what type of storage rack you choose. It can hold rods and reels, nets, oars, or even tiki torches!

The sky’s the limit, or at least the width of your RV is the limit. I highly recommend installing these in the pass-through storage and keeping all of your fishing gear in that space so that it can be your one-stop shop for all things fishing in your RV.

Keep it Tidy with a Tackle Box

It seems like a given, but keeping lures organized in a tackle box will save you the headache of dealing with sharp, loose hooks and time while sorting through tangled-up treble hooks.

With our two toddlers, it’s a priority for us to keep our lures, pliers, and other small items like sinkers and weights contained in a tackle box. We have an old metal tackle box that belonged to my husband’s grandpa with compartments and latches that keep our curious kids away from danger. It’s the classic tackle box with compartments, dividers, and a carrying handle.

There are so many different kinds of tackle boxes these days, but our main priority is to find a tackle box with plenty of compartments. That way, you can store everything from spinners to spoons, extra line, bobbers, and all things in between.

Use Your Shower When You’re Not Showering

I’ve seen some RVers stow their rods and tackle boxes in their shower while on the go. While that’s a great use of space when you’re not showering, it’s probably not a good idea to keep your gear loose while on the move. 

One of the most basic but smart inventions is a milk crate storage system. It’s a 13-inch by 13-inch milk crate that can fit in kayaks, but it’s also something that can fit on the floor of your shower. On the exterior of the crate, you can install rod holders that not only hold your rod and reels and net but also pliers, knives, and lures.

If you truly want to save space when packing up your fishing gear, look no further than my favorite fishing invention of all time: a telescopic fishing rod . It’s a rod that’s extremely portable because it telescopes out into a full-sized rod and telescopes back into a travel-sized rod that can easily fit in a backpack. It’s perfect for the on-the-go lifestyle.

I’ve used mine to catch a variety of species including lake trout, stream trout, walleye , bass , northern pike, and even red snappers. Just try to find one that’s made of fiberglass with metal guides. Most telescopic rods come with lined reels but I like to swap them out for reels I already have at home.

Whether you’re looking to land your next big catch during a camping trip or simply want to spend more time on the water while RVing, it’s important to have your gear packed securely and safely so that you can focus more on the fun and less on the chaos of packing and unpacking. Figure out your favorite system for stowing fishing gear into your RV and ultimately spend more time doing what you love – camping and fishing.

As someone who has broken multiple fishing rods by just virtue of tossing them into my vehicle, I can strongly advocate for a good fishing rod holder for your car or truck. Fishing rods are meant to bend, not break, but it doesn’t take much to damage their delicate parts, tangle line, or snag hooks.

A good vehicle-mounted rod holder keeps your fishing rod protected and separate from doors, tailgates, toolboxes, and everything else that can conspire to do damage to your precious and pricey fishing rod.

Type of Rod Holders

Most vehicle-mounted rod holders are one of two types: an enclosed case or an open rack (usually secured with some kind of strap or clamp).

Enclosed Cases

These hard cases offer the best protection for your rods and are often internally padded, with separate compartments for each rod. The downside is that enclosed cases are usually significantly more expensive than simpler, open racks and thus are typically reserved for more serious anglers willing to spend to maximally protect their rods.

This type of rack comes in many different configurations and styles, and offers a way to keep rods out of harm’s way without the cost that comes with a hard case. The primary downside of an open rack is that, depending where it’s mounted, it can expose your fishing rods to weather—or to each other, as they could bump together during transit. However, as you’ll see in our picks below, open racks are available with a variety of mounting locations and types, including a couple that fit inside your vehicle.

Mounting System

Many of our picks below utilize a universal mount, but if you already have a roof rack of some kind, you’ll want to shop with your preferred mount in mind. Racks from brands such as Yakima and Thule can work with most universal mounts, but if you have a rack that uses a particular type of accessory mount such as a C-channel, T-channel, or other, it may be better to shop for a rod holder that’s designed to work with your rack’s system.

He says trucks mostly fall into two categories: domestic trucks that usually don’t have a built-in truck-bed mounting system and import truck brands such as Toyota and Nissan, which usually come with a rail system built to accept different rack/mounting accessories. Trucks with a topper can accept a roof rack system and operate more like an SUV.

It doesn’t get any cheaper or simpler than this nylon two-strap solution that stretches between grab handles on your vehicle’s interior. For less than $20 you get a system that’s easy to deploy and take down, and while it doesn’t offer the protection of a hard case mounted outside your vehicle, it also doesn’t require a roof rack.

Keep in mind that it does require two rows of seating, and both rows need to have grab handles, so this won’t work for many trucks. But for sedans that aren’t easily adapted to a roof rack, this is a super-affordable solution that’s still way better than simply tossing your rods into the trunk or between seats.

Brocraft Brocraft Aluminum Clamp-on Rod Holder

If you keep your truck bed open and don’t already have a mounting system, there’s a strong temptation to toss your rods in back, but I can speak from experience in saying that’s a great way to ruin them, even if you have a case.

This fishing rod holder combines with a universal clamp mounting system for an all-in-one solution. It’s simple to attach and remove and is an affordable option for people not ready to commit to a large rack system that stays on their truck all fishing season. The rods are exposed, secured with a bungee system, but the rack can orient horizontally or vertically to keep them up out of the bed and out of harm’s way.

Yakima Yakima ReelDeal Fishing Rod Mount

If you swap fishing for snowboarding in the winter, this rack can easily double as a ski/board rack. The design is the same as other popular snow-sports racks except this rack comes with extra padding for the rods, which certainly won’t hurt your skis.

The clamp-down design is a proven system for a variety of gear and comes with a simple turnkey locking mechanism for security when leaving your rods in the rack. This popular rooftop hard case was originally produced by Denver Outfitters and became so popular with serious anglers that rack company Thule acquired it and has continued the tradition. A hard case, made up of individual aluminum tubes, holds up to four rods and has a nylon case to protect your reels.

For added security, the nylon reel case locks. The rod holder itself doesn’t, but it does screw into your rack, making it difficult for tempting thieves to quickly remove it, and with a simple cable lock or padlock (not included), you can lock the holder to your rack. The rack uses a universal mounting system, but you need crossbars to mount the holder.

Sumo Sumo Car-Top Suction Cup Rod Rack

It’s easy to mount a rod case if you’ve already got a compatible roof-rack system, but for many vehicles, sedans especially, it’s not so straightforward. This suction-mount option, distributed (but not manufactured) by Orvis is a clever way to keep your rods out of your car’s interior–where it’s easy for them to get bumped and catch on things—without going all-in and adding a roof-rack system.

There are two mounting options for the Sumo: suction cup and magnetic. The two mounts are also adjustable and can be secured anywhere on the vehicle (only the suction mount offers the option to use the windshield), making it an adaptable option for different vehicle and rod combinations.

Ultimate Rod Cases are made in Colorado Springs, Colorado, by a family-run company far from any oceans, but it makes an ultra-protective made-to-order rod case that’s great for saltwater reels up to 11 feet long. Store up to four rods inside the aluminum and stainless-steel box with individual protective sleeves inside for each rod.

The diamond-plate metal exterior has a rugged industrial look and for an extra charge can be custom powder coated in many different color options to match your vehicle. The mounting system is aimed to be universal and work with most crossbar- or ladder-rack style roof racks.

Littlemole Littlemole Vehicle Fishing Rod Holder

This creative option for anglers without a roof rack uses something every vehicle has: headrests. Plenty of fishermen have laid rods along the center console between seats, but this simple rack keeps them elevated and less likely to be damaged by other gear or passengers.

This is definitely a budget solution, and the rack lacks any kind of bungee or clamp to hold rods in place, so it might not be ideal if you travel rough 4x4 roads to get to your fishing spot. However, for the price, it’s an easy-on, easy-off solution that doesn’t require any extra hardware. Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
