Best time to visit gambia.

The best time to visit Gambia is from November to February when temperatures hover around a pleasant 75°F and there’s little humidity. Conveniently, this is also the best time for bird and wildlife spotting.

From mid-February to April, the average temperature rises to about 79°F, before gradually climbing into the 30s from late June to late September. Humidity during this time can be oppressive, and the rains can wash away some of the roads.

The heat and rain slowly subside over October and November, making this another good time to visit as the country is green and lush.

Geography and environment

Completely surrounded by  Senegal , save for its 129-mile stretch of coastline, Gambia is an exceptionally flat country with the highest point only 53 meters above sea level. The country’s namesake river, which threads through the country from the east, starts among tropical rainforests before gradually giving way to mangrove swamps and coastlines. Further from the river, savannahs and plantation woodlands dot the landscape.

Blood-red and almost impossibly sweet, bissap (or manjo) is an infused herbal tea made from the flowers of the hibiscus plant, and it’s the nation’s number one drink. Typically flavored with ginger or mint, it makes for a refreshing midday beverage. And with preliminary studies recently suggesting that it may reduce blood pressure, you may well return home in better shape than you left.

As much a social rite as a no-holds-barred caffeine injection, try the three-glass Ataaya ceremony when you’re looking to recharge the batteries or make some local friends. One part Chinese green tea leaves to two parts sugar, three parts water and a bunch of mint – think of it as the teetotaller’s mojito. Just don’t drink the foam at the bottom of the glass.

3. Kinkeliba

Brewed from the leaves of the local Kinkeliba plant, this strong, sweet herbal tea is mostly drunk as a breakfast tonic or at dusk during Ramadan when its reputed appetite-stimulant qualities assist in gorging on the evening meal. White it may be hunger-inducing, you needn't fret about possible weight gain because it also supposedly aids weight loss.

A thick, syrupy juice made from the fruit of the baobab, this ultra-sweet libation imparts an unmatched sugar high and is certainly more appetizing than its ungainly tree would have you expect.

Described by some beer buffs as evoking aromas of hay, boiled vegetables, canned corn and cardboard, Gambia’s national beer is probably unlikely to scoop any international beer awards. But knocked back on a white sandy beach while being buffed by 28°C sea breezes, you’re hardly likely to care.

Citizens of the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and some other countries do not need a visa for a stay of less than 90 days. Citizens of the USA, Canada, South Africa and some other countries do need a visa and should apply to their nearest Gambian embassy and ensure that the visa is obtained before arrival.

Is tipping customary in The Gambia?

In established restaurants, bars, hotels and taxis a 10% service charge is usually added to the bill - though feel free to tip more than this for exceptional service. At restaurants where a service charge isn’t included, 10% is the acceptable gratuity. Although tipping at other places isn't mandatory it will be much appreciated given the low wages that Gambian service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is also a good idea.

What is the internet access like in The Gambia?

Internet cafes with fairly slow connections can be easily found in Banjul and the resort towns on the Atlantic Coast. Towns further inland will usually have at least one internet cafe with reliable connectivity.

What are the toilets like in The Gambia?

Fairly clean western-style toilets can generally be found in Banjul and the towns on the Atlantic Coast. In towns and villages further inland, squat/pit toilets are the norm. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper as this is rarely provided.

Can I drink the water in The Gambia?

Tap water isn't safe to drink in The Gambia. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, bring water purification tablets or ask your leader where filtered water can be found.

Are credit cards accepted widely in The Gambia?

Credit cards are generally only accepted at top-end hotels, if arranged at the beginning of your stay, and at some high-end restaurants. American Express and Visa are the most likely to be accepted, though use sparingly as there is a genuine risk of fraud.

What is ATM access like in The Gambia?

ATMs can be found at banks and urban centers in Banjul and around the Atlantic Coast, though they aren’t always reliable. Due to credit card and bank fraud, caution is advised when using these and some ATMs may only allow withdrawals of fairly small amounts. Be sure to have other payment methods on hand when venturing out of the big cities. Visa is the most accepted card.

A Transformative Journey of Mass Birth Registration and Health Insurance in The Gambia

Key Highlights

• During a short seven-month period (from August 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023), more than half of the population of The Gambia, nearly 1.17 million people of all ages, was registered and issued birth certificates and national health insurance cards with a unique national identification number.
• The World Bank-financed Gambia Essential Health Services Project transformed a paper-based, manual birth registration process into a functional electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (eCRVS) system.
• The eCRVS system has become the foundational system for interoperability with the information systems of ministries and authorities, using the unique national identification numbers as the common key.

Prior to 2020, when the World Bank started supporting the Ministry of Health, the completeness of paper-based birth registrations was only about 59 percent in The Gambia . That meant that a large proportion of the population did not possess a birth certificate. This important identity document is often required to apply for identification (ID) cards, passports, and driver’s licenses, as well as to open bank accounts, take school or certification exams, and apply for a job. The lack of this document could hinder people from the full exercise of their rights, as well as their participation in various activities in society. Even when births had been registered, if people lost their birth certificates, they were not able to obtain a replacement or retrieve their records anywhere. This was because the original paper registration records were difficult to retrieve at the original registration center. The manual, paper-based civil registration process itself presented numerous challenges, including the cumbersome collection of data, inefficient archiving, and difficulties in retrieving certificates. Paper records are difficult to store, prone to damage, and hard to locate without an effective organization system. This problem also undermined the government’s ability to identify an accurate number of people at the national and sub-national levels, which in turn made it difficult to plan and provide adequate and targeted social services, including essential health services—especially in the absence of a national health insurance program in the country. This problem was pervasive because the majority of government information systems relied on traditional paper-based methods. 

Taking a multi-sectoral approach was vital to achieving the project’s success and maximizing its impact. In 2022, implementation focused on: (i) integrating the national ID system of the Ministry of Interior with the civil registration system of the Ministry of Health; (ii) working with the private sector to establish an eCRVS system tailored to the Gambian context; and (iii) partnering with the National Health Insurance Authority to conduct a combined national campaign capable of registering both births and insurance membership.     

The World Bank provided technical advice from project inception to execution. In the area of citizen identification, obtaining support from the Ministry of Interior , which issues national ID cards for people aged 18 years and older, was critical. Collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Interior also fostered a productive working relationship between the two ministries , which are at the forefront of implementing the eCRVS system.

The government negotiated with a software company to secure an electronic civil registration system software at a discounted rate. This new system can generate unique national identification numbers in real-time during registration. Departing from the conventional practice of solely conducting birth registration, the project undertook an innovative approach of collaborating with the National Health Insurance Authority to register people for the national health insurance program at the same time. Consequently, people received both documents concurrently, each featuring a unique national identification number and a Quick Response (QR) code.

The project faced unexpected difficulties during the mass registration process and adapted to address these challenges:

• Some remote areas lacked internet connectivity to issue a unique national identification number, so the project implemented satellite internet , which has been scaled up to all health facilities.  
• Errors in some birth certificates were corrected by establishing a dedicated portal for the public to report errors using their mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.
• Registration slowed during the initial days when registration teams moved to a new location. This was monitored by a daily electronic registration dashboard. Thus, the project minimized team movements within regions.
• Managing paper timesheets for over 1,500 registration officers posed a difficulty. Therefore, an online attendance register was created to streamline the payment process.

The project also financed the procurement of large quantities of information technology (IT) equipment and accessories (such as laptops, tablets, and ID card printers) for registration centers across the country to conduct the mass registration. 

Between August 2022 and February 2023, mass registration of births and national health insurance memberships resulted in the registration of 1,167,460 people of all ages. The Gambia Bureau of Statistics conducted a household survey in March 2023, which revealed that about 54 percent of the population reported having been registered (with 43 percent of electronic birth certificates seen by the interviewer and 10 percent not seen). This was also corroborated with the total number reported in the eCRVS system. 

The assignment of national identification numbers is enabling further advances for services. The government of The Gambia has established a multi-sectoral task force to enable information systems of various ministries to be able to exchange reliable, real-time data using the unique national identification numbers as the common key. This stands in stark contrast to how ministries had been operating their own information systems in silos, which made it hard to share, merge, and update data in a timely manner through secure methods. The health sector is bringing about a digital transformation, digitizing most of the information systems, including the electronic human resource management information system, the electronic national health insurance system, and the electronic health records systems.

Partnerships

Within the government of The Gambia, the project was carried out principally by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior. Moreover, to ensure interoperability of the eCRVS and the national ID system and also with information systems of other sectors, an elaborate interoperability document has been developed, and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Ministry of Health, Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Communications & Digital Economy was signed on March 22, 2024. Additionally, Ministry of Health will also sign similar MOU with other ministries such as Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

Looking Ahead

The Ministry of Health has transitioned from mass registration to providing routine registration services in all public health facilities with an eye toward universal registration. The goal is timely birth registration of newborns at health facilities, as well as the registration of the rest of the population of all ages. As the National Health Insurance Scheme is rolled out across the country in 2024 with initial focus on delivery and newborn care, it will contribute toward achieving universal health coverage in The Gambia.

The Gambia's experience with mass registration is providing inspiration and a useful policy example for other countries in the region. For example, a delegation from the Ministries of Education and Justice of Cameroon visited The Gambia on a study tour in January 23-26, 2024, to learn about the mass birth registration.

During the period of Omavi and Abbasides Caliphs, Ahvaz city flourished and became the center for the cultivation of sugar-cane. But at the end of the 3rd century AH due to upheavvals of Saheb-ol-Zanj it witnessed a decline. Later on efforts were put for recapturing its fame, but in the mid 9th century AH, the destruction of its large dam further more intensified the decline of the city from the former position that it was used to enjoy.

The construction of the Suez Canal, improved trade and shipping on Karoon River, and reformation of Bandar-e-Naseri as a port during the Qajar era, once again caused flourishing of Ahvaz, and its name was changed to Naseriyeh. During Pahlavi period, the city was re-gained its old name,i.e.,’Ahvaz’. At present it plays an important role regarding the cultural, economical and industrial fields in Iran as well as being one of the highly populated areas of the province.

The township of Ahvaz is situated in the central portion of the province and has a warm and humid climate. Ahvaz is the center and largest city of the province and is located 874 km. from Tehran

We went to Dubai Pesach 2023 with Gaya Tours. The program was very well run the entire time including the Shabbat after. Avi, Gilat, Naomi and Yossi were there to greet everyone starting from Tue AM when we arrived. They pulled together a breakfast Tue AM last minute after realizing that many guests were arriving even before the “pre program” Tue night. They served many high quality meats throughout including, lamb, steaks, kebabs, and chicken. For kiddush they served seared Salmon, Tuna, salads, and a tremendous array of the finest desserts. The highlight for us was the touring and meeting new people. They connected us with a great tour company that took us all around Dubai and Abu Dhabi. There were some hiccups in the beginning. The original tour company they chose didn’t respond to any of their guests. About 2 weeks before Gaya thankfully dropped them and chose a better company. Lastly, and eqyally important, we stayed in a 5* resort. The hotel grounds were gorgeous. The people on the program were the nicest. If you are looking for an honest, reliable tour group to travel with, I highly recommend Gaya Tours. Avi and Gilat are a real pleasure to spend the holiday with. Thank you, The Segalls

thank you gaya tours for the most memorable pesach ever! the hotel is beyond beautiful and clean, staff is super helpful. adult pool is crowded on the weekends but never had a problem getting a chair at the other 3 pools. food was tasty and plentiful. desserts were amazing! kiddushes were set up so beautiful. excursions were great. the dinner in the desert was amazing! would 100% recommend this program!

Norwegian Cruise Line passengers were stranded on a small African island after missing a deadline to re-embark

• The stranded group flew to Gambia on Sunday, hoping to catch the ship at another port.

A couple says they were stranded on a small African island after they missed a cruise ship 's boarding deadline, according to local media.

Jay and Jill Campbell, from Garden City, South Carolina, described their ordeal with a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in an interview with WPDE, their local ABC affiliate.

Norwegian confirmed to Business Insider that they were denied boarding, saying it was their responsibility to be on time.

The Campbells said they were frequent cruisers, embarking on Norwegian Dawn on March 20 for their third voyage with the cruise line in a year.

However, an excursion last Wednesday with six other people to São Tomé and Príncipe , an island nation of some 220,000 people off West Africa, took an unfortunate turn.

The couple says the tour overran, and its operator informed the captain that eight passengers were running late.

They were refused entry to the ship upon their return, according to WPDE, even though they could still see the ship from the shore.

The ship was anchored, Jay Campbell said, but the captain refused to let them board despite repeated calls and emails by the passengers to the ship and the cruise line's emergency hotline.

The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard even took the passengers to the ship, but they weren't able to get on and had to turn back, WPDE reported.

In total, WPDE said that nine passengers were not allowed to reenter the ship, including four elderly people and one person who is a paraplegic.

The Campbells told the news outlet that the ninth passenger was late for another reason — an 80-year-old woman who got a concussion on the island and was hospitalized there.

Most of the stranded passengers didn't have their medication or working credit cards, WPDE said.

The Campbells, who had a working card, said they covered $5,000 worth of expenses for the group in food, toiletries, and hotel bills.

"We have never had an experience like this before," Jill Campbell told WPDE.

The Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement provided to BI by email that eight guests on the tour missed the last tender back to the vessel.

The cruise line said the passengers missed the "all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time." It said it was a "very unfortunate situation" but that passengers were responsible for being on time.

It added that the deadline to return was "communicated broadly" over the ship's intercom, in printed communications, and on posts shown at the exits of the ship.

The elderly passenger who was concussed was returned to the US, where she has made a "safe return," a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said.

According to WPDE, the group flew to Gambia on Sunday, hoping to rejoin the ship at another port.

A spokesperson for the cruise line said that the ship could not safely dock in Gambia due to adverse weather conditions, adding that efforts are being made for the guests to rejoin the ship in Senegal on Tuesday.

Though cruise ships need to stay punctual, ruined-vacation stories like this are a reputational risk and might put people off.

For instance, two MSC Splendida passengers were stranded last summer at an Italian port after arriving too late for departure.

A TikTok video showed the couple waving and begging the crew to wait for them, even though the gangway appeared to have already been removed.

Other passengers may face the stress of becoming stranded in remote locations through no fault of their own. Last September, more than 200 people got stuck in a remote part of Greenland after their cruise ship ran aground.

And last November, passengers were stranded at a Brisbane port after a Royal Caribbean ship was overbooked.
