Welcome Aboard Chumley's BearCruises
Welcome to Chumley's BearCruises , the original and finest group sailings for the Bear (and the Bear-friendly!) community.

Created by Mark ‘Chumley’ Singer in 2002, our sailings offer you the opportunity to meet hundreds of amazing, diverse and friendly men from all over the world, and the time to make true friendships that will last for years to come!
We search the best possible ships, prices, excursions and itineraries so that you can enjoy yourself – whether that means keeping busy with activities and socializing, or simply hanging by the pool soaking in the sun – it’s your vacation and you can be as active (or not) as you wish.
We sail as a large open group aboard regularly scheduled cruises, avoiding the ‘all-gay-all-the-time’ atmosphere of some group charters, and are able to offer amazing savings over those expensive charters as well.
While our annual Fall cruise tends to draw a large group, our Spring sailings are limited and offer a much more intimate trip and the chance to get to know all of your fellow passengers.
Each year hundreds of men from all over the world convene in our departure city to begin an adventure together in an atmosphere that is designed to be warm and welcoming. We invite you to explore the world of Chumley’s BearCruises – ask any of our past guests and find out why so many return with us year after year.

About Arno's Bear Cruises
Embrace adventure, embrace inclusivity.
At Arno's Bear Cruises, we believe in creating spaces of acceptance and fun for the LGBT community. We started in 2009 offering two cruises a year. The February cruise is always the Caribbean, the others somewhere around the world. Our cruises are not just about exploration; they're about celebrating diversity and unity. Join us on a journey where every moment is filled with fun, joy and acceptance.Travel the world with pride and passion. We've been to Europe, South America and Antarctica together. There is more to explore.
“Have you ever had an experience that made you wish it would never end? One that is so much fun that you almost forget about the real world? This is what cruising with Arno is like. It’s a tremendous experience from beginning to end and beyond; One that for me has spawned lifelong friendships and memories that make anything I’ve done in the past echo in comparison. My husband and I were lucky enough to meet Arno several years ago while cruising with another bear group organizer. We encountered so many members of his group who sung the praises of cruising with Arno. We watched as they hosted amazing parties, spent time together throughout the ship and exuded so much comraderie. One night on our cruise we were double booked for a party room and Arno offered for our two groups to combine. It was the most fun we had ever had!! We booked our next cruise through Arno. Booking was amazingly easy and within a day of submitting our request we received our reservation information. Arno actually emailed us and told us that he had a better cabin available at a better price (he didn’t have to do that but he did). Since then we have been on 4 more sailings with Arno. Leading up to the cruise Arno puts an immense amount of work into helping educate his group on excursions, sales on onboard purchases, activities and so much more. Then you get to the onboard experience. Arno goes to great lengths to line up activities on the ship and ensure they are executed to perfection. He interacts with all of his cruisers and makes sure their sailing is top-notch. I have personally seen him go to bat for a cruiser and will not stop until sufficient resolution is met. I personally have brought double digits of sailers to Arno’s group based solely on the amazing experience we have in each and every sailing. We will never consider cruising with any other bear group again. Heck, we won’t even book another cruise if it isn’t with Arno. I wholeheartedly recommend anyone that even has a curiosity of what this will be like to consider Arno. He fights for us, he is passionate about ensuring our happiness and he genuinely cares for each and every one of the people that sails with him. You will make friendships and memories that will last a lifetime!!!”
Price and Carlos
I happened upon Arno’s Bear Cruise purely by accident. I was recently widowed after 20 years and was forcing myself to get out and make new friends. My new boyfriend encouraged me to do something special for my 50th birthday, and with a Google search, found his site. We were obviously apprehensive being our first cruise, let alone not knowing anyone else in this group. We have been to other events with gay men, but found that due to our ages and, let’s face it, body shapes, and we would feel out of place among the younger men. We took a leap of faith and our first Arno’s Bear Cruise was to Alaska! Booking was a breeze. There were no “surprise” fees, and Arno was very prompt with replying to questions and updates on excursions that he coordinated for the group. Arno even organized to have a host hotel both pre and post boarding upon the ship. Everyone we met was so nice and looked just like us! My inhibitions were gone as I confidently walked shirtless to the ship’s pool to join the group at the pool. As the cruise continued, more and more guys in the group introduced themselves to us and we even exchanged contact information. We took a helicopter flight atop an actual glacier, visited a dog-sled encampment within the Yukon Territory, and toured the 19th century capital of Juneau where my boyfriend Michael and I purchased rings. (These rings later turned into wedding bands). Upon our departure of that first cruise with Arno’s Bear Cruises, we made new friends and experienced wondrous nature while being entertained on a glamorous Royal Caribbean ship. We decided right then that we must do another cruise the following year. Our second cruise was with a competitor. We felt we should try a Gay Bear Group on the West Coast, as we live in San Diego, California. This cruise was with Princess Cruises from Los Angeles to Mexican ports. We were disappointed overall. Although, the group was very nice and outgoing, excursions were mainly through the ship. The group did provide a DJ and arranged our group to have private dances; however, the other guests kept crashing our parties due to the ship keeping the other disco dark. We were spoiled with our on board entertainment with Royal Caribbean with costumed singers in the promenade, acrobatics on bungee cords dancing above our heads, and truly funny comedians in the theater. Our Princess Cruise entertainment consisted of the head maître d and chef joking on stage before escorting hundreds of guests through the empty cooking rooms. A new friend we met reported to us that he witnessed a ship worker pouring cheaper liquor into expensive bottles from behind the bar at 4am. We knew that we had to go back to Arno. Since then, we have been with Arno's Bear Cruises to the Western Caribbean, Eastern Caribbean, Australia/New Zealand, and are currently booked to another Western Caribbean cruise through Arno and Royal Caribbean. We feel that not only do we feel pampered on a Royal Caribbean ship, we also feel confident that everything will be organized and orderly, yet very playful and accepting with Arno and the group of men I now call friends.

BearCruise is Back!
Bear World Magazine sat down with Dan Howell, owner of Dan Howell Travel and BearCruise.com, and Al Parker, the BearCruise.com Cruise Director, to find out about BearCruise.com and their upcoming plans for a post-Covid-19 world.
Richard Jones: There are a lot of different LGBTA+ cruise groups and other “bear” groups out there. What do you think differentiates Bear Cruise?
Dan Howell: We are a fully accredited travel agency with 25 years + of experience. I am always looking for great experiences and destinations and the best value for my clients. Our cruises often include perks such as free drink packages, free internet, paid gratuities, or onboard credit at no additional cost.
We also provide service for our clients before and after their trips with arrangements such as hotels, travel insurance, and installment payment plans. We also have a single share program to match up single travelers with a roommate. Other groups often have someone organizing trips as a side hustle. This has been my full-time occupation for the past 25 years. Our customer service sets us apart.
Al Parker: I’ve worked with Dan for the last seven years. I have always been impressed with his dedication to his clients, but never more so than during the last year as cruising ground to a halt during Covid-19. Dan has kept his clients informed, and their safety has been his number one concern. We have big plans to restart with our first cruise departing October 30, 2021 sailing from Miami to the Western Caribbean which includes Rotan, Belize, Costa Maya, and Cozumel on the NCL JOY!. All our 2022 cruises will be departing from USA ports. All our 2022 cruises will be departing from USA ports.
RJ: From the Cruise Director’s perspective, tell us what you believe differentiates BearCruise?
AP: It starts with the foundation that Dan provides, and then the rest comes from the clients and how they react to our interactions with them and with each other. One of our guests a few seasons ago told me that Bear Cruise clients are “the friendliest bears afloat”. I have used that phrase ever since, because it is so true.
I was a Bear Cruise client on the very first Bear Cruise sailing. My partner Ken and I had such a great time we came hack for more. When Dan learned of my own history working as a singer / dancer / cruise director in my previous career, he asked me to help create the Bear Cru experience and come on the trips as the official group cruise director.
DH: We have this amazing group of friendly people who enjoy meeting and being around other friendly people. It is so awesome, though, in that it is not cliquey at all.`
AP: I totally agree. Newcomers to BC are just as welcome as our regular clients. They find that that they assimilate into the group quickly. We break the ice quickly by meeting every afternoon for our pool and hot tub “takeovers”, then cocktails before dinner, and then group dining for those who wish to eat with the larger group. We also help our single travelers integrate with other single travelers as well as with the entire group. We do not want anyone to feel left out.
DH: We had a couple of new clients send us some comments after their first trip with us. Rick from Maine said, “We felt welcomed immediately. Everyone we met was so friendly. We instantly felt as if we’d known everyone for years even though we had just met everyone.” Alex from Michigan said, “This was my first cruise experience, and it was amazing!
AP: Let me share a couple of quotes our clients posted on Facebook. David from Ohio, one of our original BC clients said, “I absolutely love this group. Many like myself have traveled with the group for multiple cruises. Everyone is friendly and fun to be with and make you feel welcome even if you are traveling alone. My favorite thing is the Catamaran excursions with open bar and a buffet of great food for lunch. I can’t say enough good things so just give it a try!”
Another one of our regulars, Matt from Delaware said, “This is a special group. We have made lifelong friends. There is something for everyone- whether you enjoy keeping busy with the variety of scheduled activities or you would rather be low key and just laze around the pool. We look forward to our next sail with this welcoming group and to expanding our cruise family!”
RJ: What is the difference between BearCruise.com and some of the large all-gay charters ?
DH: The all gay charter companies are actually our friends and our business partners; we have been RSVP’s /Atlantis largest volume agency for over 20 years. We often have our bear groups on board as a subset of their larger all-LGBTQA+ cruises. Next year we have over 150 bears booked on the Vacaya Caribbean Cruise January 10-17, 2021.
In addition to what the gay charter experience offers, we supplement that with a private cocktail party, nightly Beartails get together and group shore excursions. We also arrange for a pre cruise hotel and have a bon voyage party the night before. They are amazing vacations.
BearCruise group vacations are a group of mostly gay men on a large ship where there are other passengers on board. Our cruises are much less expensive (often by almost half), and you get more bang for your buck in that we can usually get you additional perks like a beverage package. Our groups are anywhere from 50 to 400 people, depending upon the destination, cost, and interest.
AP: We bring on our own entertainers, depending upon the size of the group and the amount of time we have at sea during the voyage. Our most popular acts have been Miss Conception — an all-live singing comedian, dancer, female impersonator act with crazy live costume changes right on stage. Miss Conception sells out each summer in P-Town and each winter in Puerto Vallarta. We are so happy to get her on board with us between her permanent gigs.
Tori Scott is a fantastically bawdy cabaret singer from New York with amazing pipes! She totally blew our clients away on our last cruise. We also do “Bearoke” which my husband, Ken, hosts. We have had game shows, board game meet-ups, and one Halloween cruise we even had a tarot card reader in the group. Our Halloween cruises are great, as no one does Halloween better than our community. We always do a big Halloween party or some other theme party during a cruise, and usually an afternoon tea dance.
RJ: What are some of the unique parts of a BearCruise or your other cruise offerings?
DH: We want to help you find the right vacation that fits you. If it is BearCruise, then we would love to have you sail with our group. If it is a all gay charter, we will help book you on their cruises. At the end of the day, its all about making sure you have a fantastic time.
AP: We’ve had clients who brought their siblings, friends, and even parents on board. We are very inclusive, and they are welcome to attend our BC activities — or they can enjoy the full range of activities that the ship has to offer.
DH: We also do our own shore excursions that are exclusively for our clients. The most popular is always the catamaran during our Caribbean cruises. It always sells out!
RJ: How does Bear Cruise restart after Covid-19?
DH: Very carefully. We’ve had five planned cruises cancelled since the pandemic began. Of course, the cruise lines are not sailing now, but when they resume, we will not go until we feel secure that our passengers will be safe. We are telling all of our clients to get your vaccine as soon as you can.
We are in close contact with Norwegian, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, and the other lines we sail with, to ensure that they have excellent safety protocols in place. We’ve got a great Western Caribbean cruise coming up over Halloween 2021 on the Norwegian Joy out of Miami,. Our offer includes free internet and a free premium beverage package (yes! that includes alcoholic drinks), plus we plan to have Miss Conception back with her new show, and our favorite Catamaran out of Cozumel.
AP: Gene, one of our clients from Michigan, had always done the large all-gay charter cruises until he and his husband decided to sail with Bear Cruise to Greece.
He wrote on our Facebook page after he returned home: “Wow what a great gay cruise. We just got back from the 2019 Greek Isles Cruise and all I can say is wow wow wow!! What a great time. Dan, Al, and Ken made this trip of a lifetime. We have done a lot of all-gay cruises but never felt so welcomed as on this one. From the first night of drinks at the host hotel to the last night after the cruise it was a trip of memories. This was our first actual Bear Cruise. Dan and his staff keep us informed with all the details right up to the trip.
Having issues in London with our flights Dan was informing our hotel and transfers of our delays. When we arrived in Athens 12 hrs later everything worked out perfectly. Al and Ken every night welcomed anyone new and introduced them to group. We soon became one huge family. Dan, Al and Ken made sure nobody was left out of the group and always watched over everyone needing a little extra help or time. Pretty impressive that this was their group and they wanted us all to have the best trip of a lifetime.
We have never made so many lifetime friends out of a cruise. All we could talk about is when is the next Bear Cruise and yes we are booking. A lot of the new friends we met are repeat BearCruise guests and we are now also. It was a group of 84 guys singles and couples who made this trip so wonderful. What was so cool as there was every size shape color of guys and everyone treated everyone with so much friendship and love. Felt so welcomed to this group. On the ship this group made you so welcomed. You could be part of the big group or you could do your own thing. All I can say is if you ever are thinking of doing a BearCruise trip, do it!”
AP: Plus, BearCruise is going back to Hawaii in March 2022. We did that one three years ago, and it was one of the best cruises I’ve ever done. We also have a land / sea trip in Alaska in summer 2022 and a Mexican Riviera trip out of Los Angeles for Halloween 2022.
DH: There is so much pent-up demand for travel right now! Everyone tells us that they feel “vacation deprived”. We do, too! We can’t wait to get back out there on the open sea!
AP: What I tell people to do is put down a refundable deposit to save your spot. If you decide you are not comfortable, cancel before the deadline and get your deposit refund back. One day soon we’ll all be ready to head out on anther fantastic Bear Cruise. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay informed about all of our upcoming cruises.

Daddy Cruise ®
Helping guys of all ages enjoy vacations—together, you're welcome here.
You're probably not the 20-year-old with the ripped body that you see pictured on other gay cruise sites. You're more of an average guy, who's wondering if taking a cruise would be a good way to spend his vacation. Maybe you've been on other ships—or maybe it's your first time. You know what you don't want: a floating bathhouse, a large cruise ship with nothing but gay men, and to feel lost or left out—especially if you're not that outgoing.
You've Come to the Right Place
Here's why:, you get to travel with a bunch of friends.
Separated at birth?
We gather an active, energetic group of 20-to-100+ people: all ages and races, including Daddys, boys, and others. Bring your family and friends—gay or straight—and meet other good guys.
You get to make a difference
Assembling toiletry kits in Long Beach
Each cruise includes an optional day of service to a local group in need, such as participating in a food drive for a local LGBTQ center. You can have a transformative experience—as well as an enjoyable vacation!
You'll See It the First Time We Talk
Surprise! We found the bar!
That's right: you speak with one of us —not someone in a call center who can't wait to get you off the phone! We'll take all the time you need to get your questions answered, so you can make a good decision.
You get to know people even before the ship leaves
San Juan, PR—dining at the birthplace of the Piña Colada
There's a private Facebook page so you can meet others in advance. We'll also gather for pre-cruise virtual events, where you'll discover more about the excursions you may take, get your questions answered, and start interacting with your new friends.
You get your own personal host
Read us a bedtime story, Daddy!
We personally host your vacation! We're there to look out for you, make sure you have a good time, and feel included throughout the trip. We organize and lead lots of ways for you to get to know your fellow passengers. There's a meet-and-greet activity on the first day, dinner at our own tables throughout the cruise, and private excursions exclusively for our group. We'll also respect your need to have time alone.
You'll Love the Value
Cruising is FUN!
We don't take over an entire ship for an all-gay cruise and make you pay a premium price. Instead, we create our community on a regularly-scheduled cruise, which also gives you the choice of meeting a diverse group of travelers. In addition, we reserve cabins years in advance so we can still offer reasonable rates—even when prices go up later.
You Can Be Solo Without Being Alone!
Singles enjoying their new friends onboard
Our cruises aren't just for couples: we have lots of singles! Don't worry about sitting next to an empty chair at dinner. Or paying full fare for a double-occupancy cabin. Explore all the ways you'll feel welcome in our group, including our Roommate Match Program .
Why Singles Love Our Cruises
We care that you have a good time! That’s why you'll never feel awkward as a solo traveler.
- You can join our private Facebook page to meet other cruisers in advance
- You're invited to our exclusive excursions, events and parties to mingle with other fun-loving singles and couples
- Your personal host introduces you to other members of our group, and regularly checks in to help you feel included (while respecting your privacy)
Three Ways We Serve Financially Savvy Solo Cruisers
With most cruises designed for "double-occupancy," this can seem an unnecessarily pricey way for a single to travel. Not so with us!
The first way we combat this is with our First Fares Strategy . We buy blocks of rooms when the sailing is first announced and fares are at their lowest. That way, you're guaranteed accommodations at prices that are significantly lower than the going rates later.
The second way is through our Roommate Match Program —which also adds a dash of fun!
- We chat with you in advance to learn your preferences, on things like the hours you keep (early bird or night owl), smoking, snoring, etc. Then we find a compatible person to share a cabin with you.
- Our success rate is high, and most roommates soon feel like old friends. But if things don't work out, we'll make them right immediately, so everyone is comfortable.
- The fee for this program is $150. Most singles treat this as insurance. Even if you aren't matched with a roommate and end up with your own cabin, you're covered—you'll never pay the single supplement!
We'll Take Care of You
There's only one way you'll know if cruising with us is right for you: contact Brian at 614-799-1390 or [email protected] .
"Every day I talk with singles, or couples who want to invite a single friend—gay or straight—to join them," Brian says. "My goal is for you to feel confident that this is the right place for you, and get the fun started!"

Pack Your Bags! Here's Where You're Headed Next!
Make an impact while you cruise, enjoying a day of giving back.
Sometimes you want more than just a vacation: you want a fulfilling experience. That's why we include one optional "day of service" on our journeys.
- Maybe it's delivering mattresses to hurricane survivors in Belize
- Or having a shipboard quilting bee to create "tie together" (no-sewing) blankets for homeless teens in Baltimore
- Or packing comfort bags with needed toiletries for poor members of the LBGTQ community in Long Beach.
Delivering mattresses to hurricane survivors in Belize
You take a day to make a difference for people who need care and hope—and are so grateful to receive it. Guys tell us this often is the highlight of their trip! Getting to see the "real people and culture" beyond the glitz of a port. Forming stronger bonds by working with—and enjoying—your cruise-mates on a deeper level.
This is offered as a choice, like any other excursion. There's no judgment if you do something else that day. Some guys prefer to make an online donation to the cause, which also is important, and we make it easy.
Ask us about the day of service planned for your vacation. If you join us, you may come back feeling lucky and transformed!

A Final Word

Our ship: Vasco da Gama
In 2019, Vasco da Gama , formerly Pacific Eden, returned to her home in Europe, where she was commissioned as Statendam by Holland-America Line in 1993.
She combines the Portuguese explorer tradition with the demands of today’s cruise guests: a wide range of different bars and restaurants in an exclusive setting, lots of public space with a modern interior, and tasteful design elements.
On board, you’ll find a full range of equipment for spa, fitness, and your personal leisure activities. You won’t find any other comparable cruise ship of this size on the market offering such good value for money. The personal atmosphere on board due to the manageable number of guests is key to the sense of well-being.

Are you undecided about where to go on your cruise and want a vacation away from all the commotion? A cruise to the Norwegian Fjords is what you are looking for: a spectacle of nature between fairy tale and poetry. Protected by UNESCO World Heritage, the Norwegian Fjords are a masterpiece of mother nature: sea inlets that sneak into the coast, sometimes for several miles, flooding the valleys that were once occupied by glaciers.
Using the beautiful, gay friendly city of Copengagen as our jumping off point to the western fjords, as we sail towards the towns of Bergen, Geiranger, and Stavanger many of the fjords we sail through are just wide enough for a cruise ship. You will be shocked at how close you can get to these natural rock ledges on our Fjord cruise.
Welcome on board Costa Diadema
During the day and in the evening, you will be spoiled with choices for activities; from walks at sunset, to performances and theater shows where international artists will perform.
• 11 Swimming pools and hot tubs • 8 Restaurants and snack bars • 11 Bars and Lounges • Theatre, casino, gym and spa
Care for an aperitif? The Aperol Spritz Bar is waiting for you! And after dinner? A games room to bring out the kid in you, or an excellent beer in a real German pub.
And for moments of pure relaxation there is a great Spa at your disposal where you can enjoy a massage and look at the sea, a real treat!
On board, its always showtime Every evening at the theatre, spectacular shows await you: musicals, comedy shows, acrobats, games and much more... there is something for everyone!
Experience the excitement of the baize table, the on-board casino: try your luck at the slot machines or blackjack and the intoxicating thrill of the roulette wheel!
For a different type of experience, spend a night in an Oriental-style soft environment. In Teppanyaki Restaurant you can observe the craftsmanship of Japanese chefs.
Enjoy pizza&mozzarella with selected ingredients and traditional cooking recipes in Pummid'Oro Pizzeria. A creamy homemade ice cream or some delicious chocolate praline? No one can resist the delicacies of the Ice Cream Shop Amarillo.
Only for Gays & Bears!
How many? Our Norwegian Fjords cruise in 2016 was one of the biggest Bear Cruises. Will it be the same in 2024? We really do not have a crystal ball. We work hard but the rest depends exclusively on you. Yes, you! We want you as a new recruit.
Pre/Post-cruise Copenhagen is undoubtedly the LGBTQ+ capital of the Nordic countries and we plan to have a full program of activities in Denmarks capital with host hotel, tours, parties, and get-togethers.
Bear Parties White party, HotnSexy party or Costume Party are just examples of private parties we have had on previous cruises. Lets dance!

‘Wait for my dress’: Caleb Williams is the Zoomer QB to shake up the hidebound Bears
The franchise has long been dismissed as backwards looking. But it is set to draft a star who happily pushes back on athlete stereotypes
A mong the NFL’s heirloom franchises, the Chicago Bears are the one still living in the last century – the pride of George “Papa Bear” Halas, a league founding father. From their neoclassical stadium to their 101-year-old owner-matriarch to their stubborn reverence for “Bear Weather” (ie: lake-effect winter conditions that only affect the other team), everything about the franchise is old-fashioned. Even the Bears being in position to select a quarterback with the first pick in this month’s draft has arrived about 30 years too late in a league where the passing game dominates. What’s notable is that the passer in their sights isn’t the second-coming of 1940s hero Sid Luckman or a Harvard man or some other statuesque golden boy. It’s Caleb Williams, Gen Z’s poster boy quarterback.
On paper, Williams would appear to possess precisely the resume that Virginia McCaskey, the owner-matriarch in question, might describe as “the cat’s pajamas.” He went to USC – a college football program that Chicagoland’s many Notre Dame fans at least respect. He won the Heisman trophy, putting him in a league with early Bears two-way star Johnny Lujack. And Williams played most of his college games in the LA Memorial Coliseum, one of the few stadiums left that can rival Soldier Field’s antiquity – so he shouldn’t be a snob about the patchy quality of the Bears natural home turf.
Thing is, paper is a relic of the analog world, the world the Bears lorded over once, when they won eight championships before the Super Bowl era. Williams, on the other hand, is a product of our perpetually online age. He wasn’t even born when Tom Brady was drafted, and he marches to the beat of his own drum. The 22-year-old psyches himself up for games by listening to the very un-Zoomer John Legend’s Ordinary People, which is … a choice. He pushes the fashion envelope, infamously posing for GQ in a red dress with white gym socks and sneakers. That didn’t sit well with old-school football fans. “I’m not taking him with my no1 pick,” one Barstool sports commentator posted on TikTok. “I’m not even gonna explain it. I’m trading the pick.”

And keyboard crusaders lost their minds again when Williams turned up to a USC women’s basketball game this month with fingernails painted to match his pink iPhone and wallet – which some predictably took as a sign that Williams might be gay and, thus, unfit to be the face of an NFL franchise. (Never mind that Williams has a girlfriend and that, besides, Carl Nassib proved how few people actually care about pro footballers’ sexuality.) “The most important qualities in a leader are being confident, being secure with yourself, being bold and having everyone you’re leading want to follow you,” the NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt said in Williams’s defense .
Like many modern paragons of manhood, Williams often paints his fingernails for a bit of extra flair, sometimes with subtle messages meant for his opponents. FUCK UTAH , which he wrote for a 2022 game against the Utes, was less subtle, however, and was doomed to live in infamy after Williams left USC without even once beating the Utes. It makes Bears legend Jim McMahon’s commissioner-taunting headbands look quaint by comparison.
Williams isn’t just irreverent. He’s irrepressible, taking to social media to dunk on writers who have the temerity to suggest he “ has never experienced adversity ” – which is their way of suggesting he plays against the Black athlete stereotype. Williams was also among the first college football stars to take advantage of the transfer portal, moving to USC from Oklahoma expressly to continue developing under coach Lincoln Riley and also prime himself for the pro game under QB whisperer Kliff Kingsbury, the former Arizona Cardinals head man now running the Washington Commanders offense. Until a few months ago, the speculation was that Williams was tying his fate to Kingsbury and DC – his hometown franchise who will pick second in this year’s draft – was a more likely landing spot than Chicago, where he allegedly had no interest in playing.
All of this deepened the loyalty Bears fans had for Justin Fields, the quarterback the team drafted with the 11th pick just three years ago. When Chicago played host to Atlanta on New Year’s Eve, 62,000 fans at Chicago’s Soldier Field chanted: “We want Fields” as he led the Bears to a 37-17 victory. The route to the Bears’ suburban practice facility was lined with campaign signs that read “In Justin We Trustin’”. But in March, Chicago shipped Fields to Pittsburgh , essentially clearing space to bring in Williams – who even makes Fields, your typical young footballer with a point to prove, look like an old curmudgeon.
Before last year’s college football season Williams had dropped hints about staying in school this year, ostensibly to avoid being picked first by Chicago. At the time he was panned for suggesting as much and so was his father, Carl – who, among other things, has been quick to point out that his son, already college sports’ top NIL earner , will be motivated by more than just money. In fact, rumors last July that Carl had asked prospective agents if they’d feel comfortable negotiating with NFL teams for ownership stakes were all but confirmed when league owners voted to prohibit “non-family employees” from taking equity in teams . “He’d almost be better off not being drafted than being drafted first,” Carl told GQ in February. “The system is completely backwards.”
Ever since, league insiders have dismissed Carl as a bad influence – no surprise given that the NFL draft is, essentially, a lurid TV show about Black fatherlessness . And for too many armchair pundits, his Zoomer son seems bound to be as out of place on the Bears as a 90in plasma screen inside a Victorian drawing room (over the fireplace, where the Rembrandt once had pride of place), with some fearing Williams may actually turn out to be as big a bust as USC lab project Todd Marinovich.
after newsletter promotion
If Williams is being overly nitpicked, it’s because there isn’t much to criticize when it comes to his actual talent. Time and again during his college career, he was touted as the second coming of Patrick Mahomes, adept at executing plays as they were drawn up, and improvising when things broke down. Like Mahomes, Williams can make every throw you can think of and a fair few you can’t – or, as one scout calls them, the “ holy shit ” throws. As the draft draws near, pro talent evaluators have taken to comparing him to Aaron Rodgers – another QB known for, ahem, doing things differently , and a man with whom the Bears are hauntingly familiar .
Maybe a decade ago, when Bears football was still built around bellcow runners, hero linebackers and other Monsters of the Midway, they would have been the last team to use a top pick on a generational passer – let alone one with Black and Native American ancestry. (Some of us Bears fans are old enough to remember the slim margins Black stars like Vince Evans and Kordell Stewart were given among the team’s wider support.)
But while football fans outside Chicago weren’t looking, the Bears did something many never thought possible: they evolved. They stopped letting family members run the franchise or get taken in by the hot young GM prospect and turned the reins over to Chiefs front-office grinder Ryan Poles – who, incidentally, is also Black. ( Egads , what would Papa Bear think !) Poles has been given unprecedented authority to move the team on from Fields and other popular players and rebuild around new faces like Williams and Keenan Allen, a sure-handed receiver who arrived via a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers last month. It’s almost as if Poles knows what he’s looking for in a championship team, something Bears fans haven’t experienced since Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan were both carried off the field after a near flawless 1985 season.
What’s most encouraging: Williams, despite reports to the contrary, doesn’t just want to be in Chicago; he hasn’t hesitated to laugh at the outlandish outfits fans speculate he might wear on draft day. “Wait til; yall see draft day suit and my ladies dress,” he wrote in response to one outfit guess, the geisha-evoking cover image from Young Thug’s 2016 mixtape .
The world may not be ready for a perception-bending star QB who’s so supremely self possessed. But the league’s most hidebound franchise has only gotten so far hewing to tradition. Williams, at least, points them in a direction that’s the closest they’ve come to the future.
