85 South: The Return of the Ghetto Legends Comedy Tour

The 85 South Show, produced by 85 South Media, unites three of America's funniest, talented, and most fearless comedians. With nearly two million subscribers on YouTube, 410 million independent views, and over 100,000+ live show tickets sold, the 85 South Show has completely changed the comedy industry. 

Most recently, 85 South Media created ‘The Black Market,’ an initiative to highlight, amplify, and showcase leaders, entrepreneurs and educators, partnered with Charlamagne Tha God’s Black Effect Podcast Network and iHeartMedia, and produced two seasons of their music show 80 Vybe. 

Born in Atlanta, DC Young Fly first rose to fame with viewers and followers via his inimitable online videos. His success as a YouTube personality and his over 10 million followers on Instagram led to being cast as a lead on the MTV series Wild ‘N Out and also hosting MTV’s TRL.

His 85 South Co-Host Karlous Miller is another veteran of Nick Cannon's sketch comedy and improv showcase. A native of Oxford, Mississippi, Miller became a regular on MTV’s Wild’ N Out fifth season in 2013. Karlous Miller has touched stages all across the U.S. and Canada, he has also made appearances on such television shows as Hell Date, Comic View and The Mo'Nique Show. Karlous Miller was 1st runner up on NBC’s Last Comic Standing.

The 85 South team is completed by Washington DC’s very own Chico Bean. Another Wild ‘N Out veteran from Season 5, he is also known as one half of the “Old School Fools” rap battle on MTV’s Wild ‘N Out.  Bean started his comedy career in Greensboro, North Carolina and has since gone on to tour the country and appear on shows such as The James Davis Project, Steve Harvey Talk Show, and national fast food and athletic advertising campaigns.

Is ‘baby reindeer’ based on a true story, stream it or skip it: ‘jimmy carr: natural born killer’ on netflix, will a comedian known for his edge embrace his dad-joke era, rob schneider denies reports that his stand-up set during a republican event was cut short: “woke bulls***”.

Junetwentieth doesn’t quite roll off the tongue the way Juneteenth does, but Netflix’s infinite wisdom was smart enough to acquire and showcase the first comedy special from the popular “85 South Show” crew of Chico Bean, DC Young Fly and Karlous Miller. The timing is a bit bittersweet, though, as DC Young Fly is still mourning the unexpected death of Jacky Oh , his longtime partner and mother of his kids. The special is dedicated to her.

85 SOUTH: GHETTO LEGENDS : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Chico Bean from D.C., DC Young Fly from Atlanta, and Karlous Miller from Oxford, Miss., all came out of the long-running MTV comedy rap battle series, Wild ‘n Out .

The trio realized they had extra special comedy chemistry, from which they launched the “85 South Show” podcast in 2015. They’ve accumulated 3 million followers on Instagram, some 2.4 million subscribers on YouTube, and even created their own SVOD service, Channel Eighty Five (they premiered their first stand-up special, from Leonard Ouzts, earlier this year).

They filmed this “hometown” stop on their Ghetto Legends tour at the Gateway Center Arena in Atlanta in December, with veteran comedy director Stan Lathan behind the cameras, and special guest performances by Rich Homie Quan and Goodie Mob.

What Comedy Specials Will It Remind You Of?:  As the voiceover boasts over the opening credits: “There is no other show like this…and it’s all improv.”

Memorable Jokes: The jabs the guys get in on each other, a la Wild ‘n Out , don’t stand out quite as much as their interactions with their fans.

A woman stands up almost immediately from her front row seat to announce it’s her birthday, and all three of the comedians clown on her while allowing her to snap selfies with them. When her boyfriend stands up to defend her, the trio breaks into a song based on the line, “she about to cheat.”

At multiple points, they go into the audience while freestyle rapping. Chico gets an older woman to dance with him in the aisle, only to learn that wasn’t just any random older woman. An interaction with an interracial couple inspires the trio to launch into a series of jokes based on the film, Get Out . DC repeatedly asks for any fan to throw him some weed, even prowling through the aisle in search of some substance. When someone from the crowd eventually does toss a joint onstage, the fellas defer, jokingly worrying about what other drugs might be in that pre-roll.

If you’re not from Atlanta, you’ll also learn how the locals decide if you’re a local.

If you didn’t know that DC could play the drums, now you’ll know. He gets behind the kit and jams with the 85 South Show’s backing band.

They also welcome Rich Homie Quan for a medley of “Lifestyle” and “Type of Way,” and later close out the show with Goodie Mob coming out to perform “Get Rich To This.”

Our Take: Halfway through the special, after Rich Homie Quan’s performance, Karlous says, “we needed that little musical interlude.”

Did they, though? Yes and no.

Chico, DC and Karlous have no difficulties keeping their fans entertained, whether they roasting the audience or each other, or freestyling lyrics as they jam with their band for their own musical interludes. The band’s regular drummer is ready for rim shots aplenty, as well. All with the lights up in the arena.

It’s definitely a party atmosphere. Even if, at one point to set up a bit, Karlous asks: “Don’t this feel like a megachurch for real?”

Megachurch services do feel rather festive, too, though.

If there’s anything to quibble about, really, it’s only that at 53 minutes, this feels like the party ends almost as soon as it began. It barely lasts as long as a megachurch sermon. On their own SVOD, the 85 South Crew sells other live concerts from their tours that clock in at twice as long as their Netflix debut. So why are they teasing us here like this?

Unless that was intentionally the point.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Chico, DC and Karlous definitely left us wanting more. And that’s a good thing.

The tour will commence on September 5, 2024 at Festival Lawn at Deer Lake Park in Vancouver, BC then continues across the U.S. and Canada through the fall.

Bob Marley’s music endures as a beacon of strength, hope, and unity, attracting a growing global fanbase. For over three decades, his sons have each established themselves as renowned solo artists and collectively boast an impressive count of 22 GRAMMY® Awards , with Julian securing 2024’s win for “Best Reggae Album.”

Now reunited on The Marley Brothers: The Legacy Tour , they’ll honor their father’s worldwide impact by performing both individual hits and classic Bob Marley songs during a momentous year for the genre. As the world nears what would have been Bob Marley’s 80th birthday in 2025 , there’s no greater homage than experiencing his music live through his sons, who carry on his enduring influence across popular culture.

About Stephen Marley

Stephen “Ragga” Marley is a world-renowned singer, songwriter, and producer whose work has earned no fewer than eight Grammy Awards. Born into a musical family, Stephen is the child of reggae legends Bob Marley and Rita Marley. He began singing professionally at 6, touring the world with his elder siblings Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella in The Melody Makers. In 2008, he released his first solo album, Mind Control, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. His subsequent solo albums include Mind Control Acoustic, Revelation Part I: The Root of Life, and Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life. Stephen’s first new full-length album in more than seven years, Old Soul, was released on September 15 via Tuff Gong Collective/UMe/Ghetto Youths International. The new album is a departure from his previous Reggae repertoire, showcasing more of his bluesy, acoustic soul side, as evidenced by the first single, “Old Soul.” Stephen is also an acclaimed producer, working closely with his brother Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on the massive crossover hit Welcome To Jamrock. In addition, Stephen continues to champion charitable endeavors centered in Jamaica as a co-founder of the Ghetto Youths Foundation, along with his brothers Damian and Julian Marley.  In 2017, Stephen established Kaya Fest, the annual music festival, which features special guests and rare family performances, all with the larger purpose of raising awareness around the benefits of cannabis, guided by the mantra “Education Before Recreation.”

About Julian Marley

Julian Marley, born in London, England on June 4, 1975, to Bob Marley and Lucy Pounder, embraced a musical upbringing, mastering various instruments as a self-taught musician. Mentored by reggae greats in Jamaica, he released his debut album “Lion in the Morning” in 1996, followed by international tours. He contributed to Lauryn Hill’s Grammy-winning album and collaborated on a Stevie Wonder tribute. His sophomore album, “A Time and Place,” showcased a fusion of reggae and jazz. Julian spearheaded the ‘Africa Unite’ performances and performed at the 2008 Olympic Games. About Ky-Mani Marley 

Ky-Mani Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Anita Belnavis, is a Grammy-nominated artist who burst onto the scene with his 1996 debut album “Like Father Like Son,” blending reggae with hip-hop. Born in Falmouth, Jamaica, he has a diverse discography including “Many More Roads” (2001), “Maestro” (2015), and a collaboration with Gentleman titled “Conversations.” Beyond music, Ky-Mani has showcased his acting skills in films like “Shottas” (2002) and “One Love” (2003). Multi-Grammy winning talent, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley is a highly acclaimed Jamaican singer, songwriter and producer.  He is the youngest son of the revered legend, Bob Marley. About Ziggy Marley

Ziggy Marley is an eight-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, musician, producer, activist and humanitarian who has cultivated a legendary career for close to 40 years. The eldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, Ziggy has hewed his own path as a musical pioneer, infusing the reggae genre with funk, blues, rock and other elements through mindful songcraft. About Stephen Marley

Stephen “Ragga” Marley is a world-renowned singer, songwriter, and producer whose work has earned no fewer than eight Grammy Awards. Born into a musical family, Stephen is the child of reggae legends Bob Marley and Rita Marley. He began singing professionally at 6, touring the world with his elder siblings Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella in The Melody Makers. In 2008, he released his first solo album, Mind Control, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. His subsequent solo albums include Mind Control Acoustic, Revelation Part I: The Root of Life, and Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life. Stephen’s first new full-length album in more than seven years, Old Soul, was released on September 15 via Tuff Gong Collective/UMe/Ghetto Youths International. The new album is a departure from his previous Reggae repertoire, showcasing more of his bluesy, acoustic soul side, as evidenced by the first single, “Old Soul.” Stephen is also an acclaimed producer, working closely with his brother Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on the massive crossover hit Welcome To Jamrock. In addition, Stephen continues to champion charitable endeavors centered in Jamaica as a co-founder of the Ghetto Youths Foundation, along with his brothers Damian and Julian Marley. In 2017, Stephen established Kaya Fest, the annual music festival, which features special guests and rare family performances, all with the larger purpose of raising awareness around the benefits of cannabis, guided by the mantra “Education Before Recreation.”

About Julian Marley

Julian Marley, born in London, England on June 4, 1975, to Bob Marley and Lucy Pounder, embraced a musical upbringing, mastering various instruments as a self-taught musician. Mentored by reggae greats in Jamaica, he released his debut album "Lion in the Morning" in 1996, followed by international tours. He contributed to Lauryn Hill's Grammy-winning album and collaborated on a Stevie Wonder tribute. His sophomore album, "A Time and Place," showcased a fusion of reggae and jazz. Julian spearheaded the 'Africa Unite' performances and performed at the 2008 Olympic Games. His Grammy-nominated album "Awake" in 2009 garnered acclaim, winning 'Best Album of the Year' at the IRAWMAs. Julian, deeply rooted in Rastafarianism like his father, remains committed to spiritual and global messages in his music, embodying a conscious movement in reggae.

About Ky-Mani Marley

Ky-Mani Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Anita Belnavis, is a Grammy-nominated artist who burst onto the scene with his 1996 debut album "Like Father Like Son," blending reggae with hip-hop. Born in Falmouth, Jamaica, he has a diverse discography including "Many More Roads" (2001), "Maestro" (2015), and a collaboration with Gentleman titled "Conversations." Beyond music,

About Damian Marley

Multi-Grammy winning talent, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley is a highly acclaimed Jamaican singer, songwriter and producer. He is the youngest son of the revered legend, Bob Marley. His musical style fuses reggae with elements of dancehall, hip-hop, R&B, and rock, crafting a fresh and modern sound that is uniquely his own. Damian was the first ever Reggae artist to win a GRAMMY AWARD® outside of the Reggae category. The acclaimed 2005 breakthrough disc, Welcome To Jamrock , won a GRAMMY AWARD® for Best Reggae Album, with the New York Times naming the track “the best reggae song of the decade.” In 2010, Marley teamed up with Nas and brother Stephen Marley for his Distant Relatives project, and went on to partner with Skrillex for their groundbreaking track “Make It Bun Dem,” which Rolling Stone called “a monster mash-up of dubstep and dancehall.” Which went platinum with over 1 Million copies sold in the United States alone.
