Nepal’s mountainous landscape offers much to love. Gleaming snow-capped peaks set against clear blue skies are a common sight. A bit closer to the ground, a colorful culture provides heavenly hues. Not everyone will get the chance to make the treacherous treks to the top of Mounts Everest or Annapurna or to visit the birthplace of Buddha, but you can still get a look at some of those amazing sites through these photos from the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest.

Rana was very welcoming and hospitable. I arrived in Kathmandu and had been on a previous tour, the Himilayan Adventure team head by Rana therefore picked me up from my previous hotel and took me to my new residence for the evening; here I met my guide and was given the detailed info regarding the holiday. Rana was very approachable and a great front man for the company. I started off on my trek the next day with Durga, my guide for the trek. I can honestly say that the experience was everything a trek should be, it was challenging, I explored local life, I made friends and I was 150% looked after. The guidance given by Durga was excellent; he pointed out fauna , flora and the Nepalese animals, he told me about the history related to the trek and most importantly spoke about how to best manage the trek, walking and breathing. Overall I had a magnificent time, no stone was left unturned. Thankyou Aditya for your utmost attention and to Rana for running such a great tour.

My husband and I had a fantastic time on the EBC trek. What made it special was our lovely guide Suman who seems to know everyone on the mountains, made our trek pleasant and told us lots of stories and culture. We felt we were well looked after and the portions of the meals were huge. Mr Rana personally welcomed us and we are thankful for his company Adventure Himalayas for organising this unforgettable tour.

I had a great time on this trek! My guide was very knowledgeable and attentive. My porter took good care of me. The experience, hospitality and cultural insight offered by this trek are beyond incredible and wonderfully inspiring. Like anything, the trek has its tough moments, mostly the day over the pass, but the excitement of reaching the top surpasses the demanding nature of the trekking at that point. I will never forget this experience and it will stay close to me forever. Thanks to Adventure Himalayan Travels and treks for organizing such a special trek for me. I will highly recommend booking with them.

We did the Kathmandu-Lhasa Overland Tibet tour along with Everest Base Camp for 8 days. We drove from Kathmandu to the Tibet border Karung, North Everest base camp, Shigatse and Lhasa. These places were so beautiful that made me never want to leave. I will always keep this tour and experience on my mind. Everything was coordinated perfectly. Our guide Dambar spoke perfect English so communication was very smooth and Effortless. Thank you Adventure Himalayan Travels and treks for providing us with necessary things to make this tour an extraordinary experience.

Adventure Himalaya was not the tour operator as stated, We discovered on arrival that it was Bhutan Aries Tours and Treks. They did a very good job but we like to know who we are dealing with early on and have contact information in case unforeseen events occur. Our major disappointment involves the accommodations we received in Phodrang . In e-mails, websites, and in the itineraries, we were told we would be in 3 star hotels. In fact, the Bhutan Government Route Permit provided to us by Adventure Himalayan stated we we staying at the Dewachen Hotel with 3 stars. We were taken to the Thegchen Phodrang Guest House which is not rated as a hotel. We had to walk several minutes down a muddy road, then on arrival the electricity in the house was off and we were led to our room up a dangerously dark stairway. The electricity was later turned on. The room had no telephone, no WiFi, no television, was not properly heated, and in the morning there was no hot water. We checked booking websites and discovered the current rate for this guest house is $28 US per night. We would very much like to understand how and why this whole situation occurred.

Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley - 15 Days

I shared this trip with three friends and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. We enjoyed amazing landscapes, met many wonderful local people and learnt so much about this great country. Our guide, Bhakta, was extremely helpful and would always find the way to enhance our experience. We really had a great time with him and the two porters. This is a highly recommended trekking, not too hard, to discover an amazing country. I would point out that the sleeping bags were not necessary since all the guest houses provided us with blankets so they were just an extra weight for the porters and took so much space in the duffel bags.

Our trip was amazing! Everything was organized properly, we have got everything what was promised for the tour and on top of it excellent impressions of Himalayas mostly thanks to our guide Bhakta! We highly recommend this guide as he is a competent, knowledgeable, honest, friendly person who does his job greatly and who will go above and beyond to make your holiday unforgettable experience! He always listened to our wishes and was flexible to satisfy our needs.Special thanks to our might and powerful porter Debes(sorry for the most probably incorrect spelling) who made our trip an easy one by carrying our heavy stuff. We recommend our operator ADVENTURE HIMALAYAN TRAVELS and the guide BHAKTA to everyone who wishes to get a wonderful holiday in Nepal!

Kathmandu Nagarkot Weekend Tour - 4 Days

Nepal was the first stop on my travel throughout Asia and I couldnt have received a better welcome. Rana, Arjun and Chandra welcomed me warmheartedly and made sure that I can see, experience and enjoy from Nepal what was possible in such a short time. They were fully reliable and caring all the time, the tour went ahead as expected and I can fully recommend their service. I hope to see them again.

Buddhist Darshan Tour - 10 Days Tour

Buddhist Darshan Tour - 10 Days

My favorite part about the tour was its itinerary. I chose this one specifically for the diverse number of locations, and to see as much as possible of Nepal in 10 days, and it definitely delivered. From valleys to mountains, lakes to jungles, to stupas and temples, Nepal is without a doubt, a beautiful country, with plenty of stunning vistas (like an endless supply of jaw-dropping sights ahahha). It does have a few issues with its infrastructure, but honestly, once you reach any of your destinations, you simply forget about them and enjoy the view and the experience. Furthermore, I'd like to mention that the guides were really helpful and essential in facilitating various elements of any journey in a new country. To conclude, it truly was a memorable experience, one you should give a try.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Tour

Manaslu Circuit Trek

For a guy that hasn't left the state of Texas in many years, i was very adamant about travelling in general. But after watching some documentary in you-tube and Netflix about Nepal, i started to have different perception about travelling. With some research i came across "Adventure Himalayan Travel and treks".Met Rana the correspondence via email, who was really helpful about all the question i had before travelling. I made the Trip there in April for Manaslu Circuit Trek. From my short Breath taking experience, i couldn't have found a better correspondence and group of highly experienced travel guide and porter. The company had great pre-planed accommodation for all guests and adjustable schedule for the travelers comfort. The trek was incredible, i haven't had so much fun in a long time, i am even thinking of doing some trekking here locally, and planning a trip to the state of Washington. on the last note, I recommend the Nepali tea and "Dal Bhat", which is their traditional food if anyone is going to make the trip to Nepal in the future. Thank you Rana for a great time and hope to see you guys soon.

Upper Mustang valley Trek - 15 Days Tour

Upper Mustang valley Trek - 15 Days

Rana (op manager) was organised and responsive, Deu our guide was very professional, kind hearted and thoughtful. Malpa our ported was enthusiastic, jolly and mountain king. The area of upper mustang was harsh at times, remote and also awe inspiring and dramatic landscapes. The culture and small villages were welcoming and very interesting . Thankyou himilayan Adventures for a great trip! Would recommend this trip as a off grid experience!

Langtang Valley,Gosainkunda and Helambu Trek - 16 Days Tour

Langtang Valley,Gosainkunda and Helambu Trek - 16 Days

It was a very nice tour and very well organized. Even before I arrived there was very nice contact with the organizer Rana, who responded quickly to inquiries. And then I had a very good guide with Rudra Dhoj Weiba. He always motivated me, also with humor, because at a hight over 4000 meters it was very exhausting for me. And he was not only a guide, but also a "doctor" when I had a cold. :) I can highly recommend Adventure Himalayan Travels and the Guide Rubra Dhoj Waiba and last but not least: the price-performance ratio is also very good.

Reviews of Adventure Himalayan Travels Tours

The tour was very good. Tour company owner and our primary contact Rana and our driver Dinesh were very good to deal with. Rana picked us up from the airport and sat us down to explain what to expect for the next 7 days on our tour. We went in August, which happens to be the rainy season, and thus was not a busy season, so it eneded up being a private tour. We had the same driver throughout the tour, but our guides changed at each destination. And they were all very good to deal with. Knowing the standard of accommodations isn't what we were used to, we paid a little bit extra to upgrade to 4 star hotels, and it was definitely worth it. I strongly recommend doing that. Just the upgraded views make it worth it. The one major complaint I have about Nepal is thier roads. It took us 10hrs to drive 250 kilometres. I wouldn't even call it a road, it's just a series of potholes that you need to drive over very slowly. Our driver Dinesh did an excellent job of navigating them, but it did seem like we were spending a large chuck of every other day just driving. The distance we covered isn't large, but because the roads are atrocious, what should have taken 3-4hrs, routinely took more than twice that long. But we had a good time in Nepal despite the drives, and I would definitely recommend Ranas company any day if you choose to go to Nepal. He is very attentive to his customers needs, that's for sure.
I discovered on this trek that enjoyment of the journey is largely tied to the guide leading the climb. Whereas on the previous trek, with the exception of a couple of dark rainy climbs mentioned in a previous review, my guide was frequently far out in front of me and would wait at a place where ther might be confusion as to which path to take, my guide on the Annapurna Trail Rudra Dhoj Waiba was with me every step of my slow journey. He did not act perturbed by my turtle rather than hare pace. He would grab me by the arm whenever I woukd begin to slip. And pick me up when I fell, including a four foot drop from a narrow path after the sun had set. Fotlrtunately, I fell into a bed of high grasses...no injury. He would encourage me, saying "Good Job". He said he was there to make my trek as enjoyable as possible. I had searched the internet and travel agencies here in Kathmandu for Annapurna Adventures. I found none that can compare to the value and personal attention you get from Himamayan
This is a great trek from a professional trekking company. My thanks to Rana (owner) for all his advice and organisation for us. The trek itself is not overly long, for a total of 10 days including starting and finishing in Kathmandu. The walk up the Langtang Valley along the river is spectacular with breathtaking views of the mountains and walking through beautiful forests. We had a fantastic Guide - Purna Raj, who was knowledgeable, funny and safe. This is really important on a trek like this. My advice for those considering this trek: 1. Do it! 2. Wear good quality ankle length boots - no Runners - the track is very rough and often muddy. 3. Try to book a jeep transfer to and from Kathmandu to Syrabrubesi as the road there is very very rough in places. 4. Moderate level of fitness as there are some big days in terms of climbing and distance covered. All in all, 5 stars and highly recommended.

Himalayas, Near and Far

May 23, 2012 JPEG

Astronauts onboard the International Space Station (ISS) shot these photographs of the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, and the Indo-Gangetic plain.

The wide view above, taken in May 2012 by astronaut Don Pettit shows a dramatic 1000 kilometer (600 mile) stretch of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. The Ganges/Ganga Plains occupy the foreground, and the numerous lakes and mountain glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau are visible beyond the mountains. The major rivers on the plains—the Ganges, Ghaghara, and Gandak—have transported vast amounts of sediment from the Himalayas over millions of years and deposited much of it in very large alluvial fans .

Due to the oblique viewing angle from the ISS, the curve of Earth’s limb defines the horizon visible from orbit. This photo view is close to the magnificent view that would have greeted Pettit’s eyes that day because the lens he used (16 mm) is fairly close to the focal length of the human eye (about 25 mm). To the unaided eye, Chomolungma/Mount Everest, the highest peak on Earth (8,848.86 meters or 29,031.7 feet) is indistinguishable in this panoramic view.

December 5, 2017 JPEG

The second photo was shot by astronaut Randy “Komrade” Bresnik in December 2017 while looking southwest through a much longer lens (420 mm). It shows details from the part of the range that includes Mount Everest , which appears without its usual cloud cover. The extensive monsoon cloudiness that brings rain had not yet set in, though southerly winds blew up some of the major valleys onto the Tibetan Plateau, causing cloud streamers to rise. Two of the largest valleys that cut through the Himalaya Range lie just east and west of Chomolungma/Everest.

Another reason for the clarity of the air on this day was that the usually hazy air pollution of the region was blown away by the winds. A gray mass of air pollution (upper left) still obscured some of the landscape detail on the plains.

Astronaut photograph ISS053-E-317703 was acquired on December 5, 2017, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using a 420 millimeter lens. Both were provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The images were taken by members of the Expedition 31 and Expedition 53 crews. The images have been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) have a unique view of the world because of their position in a low orbit (200 nautical miles, 360 kilometers) relative to satellites and their ability to look at any angle out the windows of the spacecraft. ISS crewmembers recently took advantage of their vantage point to photograph a series of oblique views of the Himalayas looking south from over the Tibetan Plateau. At first glance, one might think that the image looks like a picture taken from an airplane, until you remember that the summits of Makalu (left, 8,462 meters, or 27,765 feet) and Everest (right, 8,850 meters, or 29,035 feet) are at the heights typically flown by commercial aircraft. The full mosaic covers over 130 kilometers (80 miles) of the Himalayan front, and could never be seen this way from an airplane.

The Many Faces of Mount Everest

Over the years, astronauts have used various viewing angles and lenses to capture the many faces of Everest. Differing seasons and illumination allow for very different, but always spectacular perspectives. The astronauts on the International Space Station obtained this view of Mt. Everest in late November 2003.

Astronauts are taking incredible photos of the Himalayan mountains from space

It's no secret that astronauts have some of the best social media feeds on and off Earth.

Scott Kelly, for example, blew us away with his #EarthArt series on Instagram, Twitter, and other services. Like this shot of a Himalayan lake:

But now Expedition 47, the current crew of the International Space Station (ISS), is garnering the internet's attention with its own incredible views of the world's tallest mountain range.

These photos, many of them by NASA astronaut Jeff Williams, reveal just how amazing the Himalayas look from space — and how crucial they are to billions of people.

In this photo by NASA astronaut Jeff Williams, Mt. Everest (center) looks like a small bump against the rest of the Himalayan mountains:

The mountains stretch roughly 1,500 miles and span six countries: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, and Nepal.

The name "Himalaya" means "abode of snow" in Sanskrit — a fitting name for the home of an estimated 15,000 glaciers. In May, Williams treated his followers to detailed photos of a few glaciers:

Like many glacial regions, though, global warming is changing the Himalayas. Some areas of the range, like the Karakorum region, might be growing, as shown by this NASA animation tracking growth from 1990 to 2015:

The himalayas are known for their magnanimous peaks and gorgeous views. ever wondered what they look like from space we have you covered..

Astronaut Shares What The Himalayas Look Like From Space And It's Surreal

Home to the tallest mountain in the world, the Himalayan range has many other towering peaks too. Needless to say, they make for some beautiful photo-ops, especially when taken from a good height (for instance, an airplane). But, ever wondered how do the Himalayas look like from space?

Astronaut Sultan AlNeyadi, who is currently at the International Space Station (ISS), tweeted some stunning images of the mighty mountains taken from space and they’re nothing short of breathtaking.

Here’s how the Himalayas look like from space

The Himalayas from space 🏔️ Home to the Everest summit, the highest point above sea level on earth, these mountains are one of the iconic landmarks of our planet’s rich nature. pic.twitter.com/DiQqz0L95b — Sultan AlNeyadi (@Astro_Alneyadi) August 12, 2023

In his tweet, AlNeyadi wrote, “The highest point above sea level on earth, these mountains are one of the iconic landmarks of our planet’s rich nature,” highlighting that the range has the highest point in the world — Mount Everest . In the image that offers a bird’s eye view of the range, one can clearly see the magnificent snow-capped peaks cutting the clouds.

The Himalayas span across five nations including India, Pakistan, China, Nepal and Bhutan, and have a rich biodiversity and local culture. Treks such as those to the Everest Base Camp (in Nepal), Valley of Flowers and Bali Pass (in India) are some of the most scenic routes for trekking that adventure enthusiasts can embark on, while other mountains in the range are home to quaint hill stations that make for a wonderful summer getaway.

This isn’t the first time that AlNeyadi has shared glimpses of how the world looks from space. Other than the Himalayas, he shared images of Delhi to commemorate India’s Independence Day on August 15, 2023, stills of what the UAE and Brighton look like from that altitude, images of Singapore to mark the country’s National Day and even the inside of the space station.

Leaders in Responsible Travel

Responsible Travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in the Himalaya. World Expeditions have pioneered many unique philanthropic initiatives that benefit our staff, local communities and the environment. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting a program that is committed to safety and sustainability.

Stay at our exclusive semi-permanent camps in Nepal

Four decades of feedback and experience has proven that camping provides the most authentic trekking experience. Across the Annapurna and Everest regions you’ll enjoy the extra comfort of our exclusive camps, which feature standing height tents, clean beds with mattresses and pillows, a heated dining room, composting sit down toilets and more. Do yourself and the environment a favour by choosing our minimal impact accommodations.

All meals on Nepal treks included

Did you know that meals on a 2 week tea-house based trek in Nepal could cost you in excess of US$800pp?! Value for money, peace of mind, looking after your health as well as the local landscapes are just some of the reasons why we believe it’s a wise decision to choose a Nepal trek with all meals included. Watch our ‘7 Reasons Why We Include Meals On Our Nepal Treks’ video on every Nepal trip page to learn even more.

World Firsts

We proudly pioneered the first ever trekking trip to Tibet (1991), and developed trails in Nepal and the Indian Himalaya that had never before been used commercially, including the Api Himal and a traverse from Kashmir to Ladakh through Zanskar (1983). We also piloted the first commercial opportunity to walk The Great Himalaya Trail (2010) linking the high passes from Nepal’s most eastern to western borders.

Innovative Active Itineraries

We’ve been organising treks, climbs and tours in the Himalaya for four decades. Our firsthand knowledge of the region is unmatched, and we continue to push the envelope each year by innovating new programs while also finessing our classics. From a short four-day family trek in the Annapurna region to a challenging mountain bike traverse from Tibet to Nepal, we’re sure to have something for every age, interest and fitness level.

Great Value, Highly Inclusive

On top of all meals, highly trained local guides, an experienced trekking and cooking crew and exceptional camping services, we also provide you with the use of a trek pack, which includes a quality sleeping bag, down or fibre fill jacket and insulated mat (valued at over US$500).

Expert Guides

Our guides in the field are the real keys to our success, making your experiences exceptional. From Tim Macartney-Snape, who with Greg Mortimer completed the first Australian summit of Mount Everest, to Bir Singh, one of Nepal’s most experienced guides—our leaders are the pillars of our Himalayan adventures.

Stay at our comfortable semi-permanent campsites in Nepal's Everest region&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Mark Tipple</i>

The countries of Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and India present some of the world's poorest living conditions. According to the United Nations 2010 Human Development Report "environmental degradation intensifies inequality through adverse impacts on already disadvantaged people and inequalities in human development amplify environmental degradation". World Expeditions chooses to make a difference by putting in place initiatives that reduce our impact and giving back to the places and people we encounter. To minimise our impact on the natural environment we practice the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', in addition to supporting local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, Child Welfare Code of Conduct and Porter Welfare Policy ensure the well-being of animals and children encountered on our adventures, as well as the mountain porters we employ on our treks.

Private eco campsites

In the Everest and Annapurna regions, our sustainable private campsites feature standing room, fixed two person tents equipped with raised beds, mattresses and pillows. Dining rooms offer a comfortable environment to dine and socialise with fellow trekkers, with cushioned seating, picture windows with mountain views and, at higher altitudes, a pot belly stove for warmth. Ablution blocks have western style sit toilets and wash basins.

Wilderness camping

Enjoy our fully supported, self-sufficient camping featuring quality two person tents with good ventilation that have been erected in scenic wilderness settings as well as a dining tent and a toilet tent with a sit toilet. Our crew take care of the logistics, including food preparation, as we focus on keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum.

In the Annapurna and Everest regions we have specially appointed eco lodges which adhere to our very specific criteria of not burning wood and follow our menu and hygiene guidelines.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3-4 star properties that are generally centrally located, atmospheric, and where we have seen a very high traveller satisfaction over many years.

Unforgettable beautiful photos of the Himalayas!

Spread across Asia, the mighty Himalayan peaks have an awe-inspiring presence. This iconic mountain range is a great example of nature’s power and raw beauty. The mountain boasts of the highest summit...

Fact check: Image claiming to show the Himalayas from space is digital artwork

himalayan space tour and travels photos

The claim: An image shows the Himalayas from space

A photo that purportedly shows the view of the Himalayas from space is drawing attention on social media.

“This is what the Himalayas look like from space!” read the caption of a Sept. 4 Instagram photo from the page Astronomy basics that accumulated more than 1,000 likes before being deleted on Sept. 8. “This image was taken from space. The Himalayas, or Himalaya are a mountain range in Asia separating the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.”

The photo was also shared to Twitter on Aug. 31 in a post with more than 11,800 likes. The account credited NASA for the photo.

“The Himalayas from the International Space Station,” one Facebook user wrote along with the photo on June 3.

But the photo in question was not captured in space. It is a work of digital art.

Fact check:  Barry Wilmore quote about seeing a fellow astronaut outside space station is satire

Astronomy basics told USA TODAY it removed the post to "make sure people don't misread it." The Facebook and Twitter users did not return a request for comment.

Photo is 3D computer artwork

The image circulating online was created by graphic designer Christoph Hormann and published on his website Views of the Earth: Artificial Images of Our Real Planet.

Hormann told USA TODAY via email that he created the visualization in 2006 using data recorded by satellites from space, "but it is not a photo taken from space."

His  website says  the images are generated with a method different from the one used by programs such as Google Earth and NASA World Wind. Hormann says his technique of ray tracing allows for higher quality and more realistic renderings.

The computer-generated image also appears on Science Photo Library , a stock photography website, with the caption, “Himalaya, 3D computer artwork, viewed at an altitude of 39 kilometers”

Social media users who shared the photo online cropped out the original watermark and rotated the image.

NASA shared an authentic photo of the Himalayas taken from the International Space Station to Instagram on Dec. 15, 2020, and wrote, “The snow-covered Himalayan Mountains are in splendid view in this enhanced, long-exposure image taken by a crew member aboard the @iss.”

More recently, NASA astronaut and space station flight engineer Mark T. Vande Hei  shared an image of the Himalayas from the International Space Station to Twitter on June 2.

Live updates: Total solar eclipse begins to cross North America

himalayan space tour and travels photos

The solar eclipse has begun!

A total solar eclipse — nicknamed the Great American Eclipse for its long path over North America — will be visible in the sky today over parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada.

If conditions are clear, tens of millions of people will be treated to stunning views as the moon passes between Earth and the sun and temporarily blocks the sun’s light.

Follow live updates below, with reporting from correspondents stationed in Texas, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio, New York and elsewhere along the eclipse’s path.

Wishing everyone good weather and clear skies!

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Marriage is through sickness and in health, through life’s brightest moments and its darkest. But some want to get the darkest out of the way first.

Hundreds of couples from around the country have flocked to a Russellville, Arkansas, soccer field today to tie the knot at the very moment the moon covers the sun. All they needed was a marriage license — and a few minutes on this Monday afternoon — to take part. Call it a total eclipse of the heart.

A couple watches the eclipse

Russellville is among the top places in the country to watch the solar eclipse: NASA is hosting part of its live broadcast from the city, and hundreds of thousands have traveled into town for the event.

Totality has come and gone in Dallas

Claire Cardona

DALLAS — Despite a forecast for cloudy skies, the weather cooperated and an eerie dusk slowly fell as the city entered totality.

For nearly 4 1/2 minutes, it looked like dusk. Eclipse-watchers looked up and clapped and cheered, but the birds were silent. The temperature — which has been in the 80s and a bit humid — also dropped.

Now that the moon is sliding aside, the birds are chirping once again.

Totality crosses Little Rock

The solar eclipse is moving over Arkansas at the moment, with totality starting to wrap up in Little Rock.

The eclipse will continue northeast, with millions more people awaiting their turn to experience a few minutes of darkness in the middle of the afternoon.

Totality underway in Eagle Pass and Kerrville, Texas

The moon is in its final stages of sliding between Earth and the sun over Eagle Pass and Kerrville, Texas, the first cities in the state (and the United States) to experience totality.

Viewers in these parts of the state will be treated to a little over 4 minutes of darkness — one of the longest stretches of totality in the United States.

OAKLAND — Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, the moon only blocked about a third of the sun during our partial solar eclipse.

Stages of the solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and it starts to get dark, look out for the “diamond ring effect” created by the last beams of sunlight. The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Maggie More, NBC Washington

WASHINGTON — It’s 2:19 p.m., and the edge of the moon is visible in front of the sun — and it got just a tad dimmer and a tad cooler on the National Mall.

At first it seemed like it could have been one of the few fluffy white clouds in the sky, but then the cloud moved and the dimmer light stayed the same.

The crowds are a now a little quieter, and more people are looking up.
