  • Last Updated: January 6, 2024

Whether you’re looking to wander the heritage streets or dive into an outdoor adventure, you’re going to love this guide to all the best things to do in Ipswich, Queensland!

After spending some time around the Gold Coast and southern Queensland, we made our way towards the Brisbane region and decided to head inland a bit to see what else we could find.

Just a 45-minute drive from Queensland’s capital we drove into Ipswich, a place that used to be known as a working-class town but is now growing as an up-and-coming tourist destination

Local businesses and the government tourism board have been working hard to develop activities and attractions to draw people away from Brisbane for a weekend or more. It’s also a popular day trip destination.

And the efforts are paying off.

Ipswich really surprised us in a good way. We weren’t sure what our experience would be like there, but we discovered plenty of fantastic places during our visit.

The beauty of Ipswich is that not only is the centre of town an attraction, but the surrounding area boasts plenty of incredible things to do.

Whether you’re planning a day trip from Brisbane , trying to tick off all the great Ipswich points of interest over a few days, or making a getaway as a couple, family, friends or solo traveller, this blog post will help you make the most of your time there and know which are the top places to visit in Ipswich.

From visiting Ipswich Art Gallery or Ipswich Nature Centre, to exploring heritage buildings, to riding in a hot air balloon, to doing dot painting and learning about the Aboriginal culture, here is our list of the best things to do in Ipswich.

Queens Park is located in the heart of the Ipswich city centre at the end of Brisbane Street, and you can easily spend a morning or afternoon exploring the grounds.

It’s is one of the oldest parks in Queensland and has significant cultural heritage values.

The park’s original design goes all the way back to 1862.

When walking through Queens Park, you will experience old-world charm with modern-day conveniences surrounded by heritage buildings.

So grab your friends or families and share a picnic on the grass or grab a coffee and go for a walk past the historic buildings and landscaped gardens.

NOTE – Unfortunately Ronald is not doing this tour anymore but Sip’n’Dip hopes to still be able to offer dot classes in the future. Do check out their website for upcoming tours and other tours around the area.

We’re strong believers in the importance of learning about a country’s history and culture when you travel. And Australia isn’t any different.

One of our favourite Ipswich activities was actually doing just this by learning how to do some traditional Aboriginal dot painting.

We joined a guided experience with local indigenous man Ronald from Sip ‘n’ Dip Ipswich , and he kindly taught us all about the Aboriginal tribes in the area, and how to do their famous dot painting artwork.

Ronald hosts an incredible cultural tour in Queens Park, and he was so open to us asking as many questions as we could think of about his people, art and history.

After a long chat, he then brought out canvases and paint, showing us how to dot the paint in their traditional style, then setting us loose to make our own piece of art, which we got to keep afterwards.

This was a highlight for us, and definitely one of the best things to do in Ipswich.

When you are in Queens Park near the city centre, do not miss a visit to the Ipswich Nature Centre.

The Ipswich Nature Centre has over 42 species and around 200 animals in care – dingos, bilbies, wallabies, a wombat, emus, kangaroos and more.

The animals have been rescued from around the region, but unfortunately cannot go back into the wild as they’d be at risk.

Instead, they live a protected life here at the park, where carers and rangers look after them and offer tours to educate visitors.

Amazingly, it is free to enter or you can get a guided tour for only $8 per person.

If you love the place you can leave a donation which will be used for the care of the animals and future improvements.

This is one of the great free things to do in Ipswich for all the family.

If you are wondering what to do in Ipswich, just head to the Japanese garden to zen out for a bit before figuring out your plans for the rest of your trip.

This zen garden will clear your mind and take you off to a peaceful place. With stunning paths, vegetation and ponds the garden is a beautiful way to start the day or wind down from a busy one.

The Japanese gardens were designed by Ipswich’s Japanese sister city, Nerima, hence the garden’s name.

Japanese Garden

When we visited Japan we didn’t get the chance to do a Japanese tea ceremony, and we were sad we missed out on one.

But here in Ipswich, we took a beautiful walk through the Japanese gardens and came across a traditional Japanese tea house.

And luckily for us, we had the chance to finally do a ceremony!

The tea ceremony is a beautiful experience. It is about harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity.

You do not just drink tea but learn about the ceremony and why things are done the way they are.

These are held on the last Saturday of every month, and you must book ahead through the Discover Ipswich site.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

If you are a history buff and want to know about Ipswich’s ‘Top of Town’ history, then pop into the Tourist Information Centre and book your tour.

Our guide taught us all about the history of Ipswich, why the houses are built on stilts, how the street art scene has been developed and plenty more.

There are so many historic buildings and museums in the Ipswich region, like the Town Hall, the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway and Rail Museum, and more. Getting a guided tour about the stories behind it all is pretty fascinating.

Old Buildings

The Ipswich Art Gallery is one of the most visited regional museums in Australia.

So of course you should head to the museum to check out the latest art exhibitions on display.

The Ipswich Art Gallery is a visual art and social history museum presenting a dynamic program of exhibitions and heritage displays with free workshops, performances and an extensive program for children and families.

This place is definitely worth seeing if you love art and are interested in history as well.

If you are looking for more local things to do in Ipswich, head to a farmer’s market in the area

There are a few to choose from so it depends on what you are looking for and when you are in town.

  • Springfield Markets are held on the first Friday of the month from 3pm – 8pm at Robelle Domain. This market has local arts and craft stalls, local produce, multicultural food trucks and live music.
  • Peak Organic Markets is held at Ivory’s Rock in Peak Crossing every Saturday. This small, NAASA certified organic farm opens to the public from 9am – 2pm offering a range of great fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Handmade Expo Market is held at the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway monthly on Saturdays from 8am -1pm at the Ipswich Turf Club. It offers sweet treats, handmade homewares and local produce. Lots of activities for the kids.
  • Museum Twilight Markets at the Workshops Rail Museum are held twice a year. If you are lucky enough to be in town during this time the market will entertain you with live music, lots of food trucks and local goodies. Get in contact with the local tourism centre to see when the dates are. And check out the Workshops Rail Museum while you’re at it!
  • Twilight Flicks Outdoor Market located at Cameron Park, will be held every second Saturday of the month and feature great flicks, market stalls, live music and food trucks.
  • Food Fair in the Square located at Ipswich City Mall in the CBD. A great selection of dishes with many food trucks to choose from different countries around the world.
  • Ipswich Showplace Markets are held every Sunday at Ipswich Showgrounds from 6am -11.30am and entry is a coin donation. These markets are for serious bargain-shoppers. You will find new and secondhand toys, clothes, books, arts and crafts to DVD’s, hardware, hot food and local produce.

Local Products

Whether it’s for an afternoon session or a few drinks in the evening, heading to the Pumpyard for a craft beer needs to be on your Ipswich itinerary.

The 4 Hearts Brewing Company has developed a reputation for themselves for creating a delicious array of boutique beers.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed about what to choose, start off with a tasting paddle to sample all their different beers.

The business has refurbished an old building that was once Ipswich’s first source of water before being turned into a Technical College, and now a brewery.

This makes the venue ooze with atmosphere and industrial style.

Jarryd loved the Red IPA and my favourite was the Porter.

*Note: Dovetails Restaurant has apparently closed. We’ll update this article after our next visit to let you know our new recommendation.

After your pint head over to the Dovetails Restaurant, where you can have some tasty food.

This is in the same complex as the brewery so you can admire where old meets new with their stylish design.

The food was very delicious with plenty of meat and vegetarian options.

Dovetail Restaurant

After lots of yummy beer and food, you should finish off the night with ice cream at Ungermann Brothers Ice-Cream Parlour, which is also in the same building.

The flavours were crazy like ‘Salted Caramel, Chocolate and Potato Chips’, and ‘Blue Cheese and Fig’, along with more standard flavours.

All their ingredients are locally sourced too.

Ice Cream Shop

After exploring the centre of Ipswich, head out of town for a drive to see the countryside.

This is where you really get to know and enjoy the area.

Before you go, pop into the tourist centre and they will give you some ideas and a road trip itinerary to follow.

It’s no secret that Aussies love their coffee, and we don’t settle for a mediocre brew.

Luckily if you’re a coffee lover like us, you’ll find plenty of good options to grab a drink around the downtown area.

Our favourite was Dancing Bean Espresso tucked away off the main street, where they specialise in boutique roasted blends.

Dancing Bean Espresso

Take a little drive out to The Llama Farm . This place has Queensland’s biggest herd of llamas, so it will be an experience like no other.

You can even pick a llama to walk on a lead down one of their trails. Cute!

A lot of the llamas here were born on the farm so they are used to humans. They are very friendly and each one has their own name.

There are not just llamas on The Llama Farm – you can also visit the donkeys, miniature ponies, peacocks, geese, turkeys and their 2 beautiful dogs. This is one of the fun things to do in Ipswich with kids.

Drop into the Watercress Creek Olives and Limes and visit Bernie and Loraine.

They supply limes and olives to all the local bars and restaurants in Greater Brisbane.

During the pandemic, Bernie and Loraine decided to open up a store to sell their products to the public. The idea took off.

Many locals and tourists stop at this attraction now and drop in for produce or to have picnics on the farm.

You can easily spend the afternoon on their farm with a tour, followed by an olive platter to watch the sunset over the olive and lime trees.

Bernie also will spill his secrets and fill you in on how to know a great lime or pick the right olives.

Hot tip that we learnt from Bernie – If you see a yellow lime, it is not bad. In fact it is actually great for cooking or your cocktail drinks as they are ripe, juicier and have more favour.

Olive Farm In Ipswich

On your Ipswich road trip, do pop into the town of Marburg. Taryn from The Soul Nook Collective is based here and has created something unique for the area.

She leased the super cute church in town, put in some bell tents around the property and turned it into a bohemian venue.

You can head here for a coffee and browse through the shop (all local products too) or get a group of friends together and have a picnic in the bell tents.

I really loved what Taryn has done and how she has thought outside of the box to create a unique mobile business.

Bell Tents

For a truly amazing idea on this list of things to do near Ipswich, head out to the legendary Spicers Hidden Vale for lunch.

Here you can look out over the valley with a stunning view of the surrounding hills.

But more than just the views, the food is delectable! The award-winning head chef here cooks up the most incredible meals with a real passion for his craft.

He truly believes in the farm to table concept, offering inspired dishes with the vegetables from their garden and meat from the local farmers in the area.

Make sure you make a reservation before coming out because it gets booked quickly.

Spice Hidden Vale Restaurant

After lunch, organise a tour of their wildlife centre, which is within walking distance from the restaurant.

Here you will learn about what researchers are doing to protect the animals of the area.

It is honestly one of Queensland’s best native wildlife centres.

This is a partnership between the University of Queensland and the resort, and it’s great to see this has been established near Ipswich.

They house native wildlife where students from the university come and have hands-on training on wildlife management and conservation techniques.

Inside the centre is a variety of reptiles and fat-tail dunnarts (look them up, they’re so cute!), with the goal being to care for them and get them back to good health to be released.

They have also found many koalas in the area where they have put trackers on them and monitor their progress.

Lizard Animal Sanctuary

On the same property, there is a world-class mountain bike trail network, and if love two-wheeled adventures, you’re doing to be in heaven here!

Hidden Vale Adventure Park is a 40-minute drive from Ipswich and offers a huge variety of terrain for riders of all skill levels.

There is over 110kms to choose from beginner runs or advanced, depending on your ability.

Riding in a hot air balloon is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable ways you can experience a new place, and one of the best places to do this near Brisbane is right here in Ipswich.

Nothing beats watching the sunrise from the air in a hot air balloon, so get in touch with the guys at Floating Images for a morning you’ll never forget.

This is definitely one of the best things to do around Ipswich.

The owner and Chief Pilot Graeme guides you through the skies and teaches you all about The Greater Brisbane Region.

There is only one flight a day so make your booking early and don’t miss out.

Some of the best Ipswich tourist attractions are actually the nearby hiking trails that will get you into nature and let you appreciate the beauty of the Greater Brisbane region.

Check out the Spring Mountain Conservation Estate which is located 20 minutes from the Ipswich CBD for all your hiking needs.

With over 2,500 hectares, the area offers unique rocky outcrops of White Rock and Spring Mountain, extensive forested ridges, escarpments and valleys and of course a huge variety of plants and wildlife.

For the bushwalker, there’s everything from an easy 200m walk to a more challenging 19km round-trip trail.

The entry to Spring Mountain Conservation Estate is the Paperbark Flats Picnic Area, at the end of School Road in Redbank Plains.

Another great Estate to check out for hiking is Flinders-Goolman Conservation Estate.

This place has 2,200 hectares and offers extensive forests and rugged volcanic peaks and slopes including Flinders Peak, Mt Blaine, Mt Catherine and Mt Goolman.

The area has different walks from easy to more difficult for all the family. You could easily spend the day out here.

Where to Stay in Ipswich

If you’re doing more than just a day trip from Brisbane and are looking to spend the night here, these are some of our recommendations for where to stay in Ipswich when visiting South East Queensland.

Hardings Paddock Campground is one of the area’s best campgrounds.

Offering a serene retreat surrounded by nature, Hardings Paddock Campground provides campers with a peaceful setting to enjoy the scenic beauty of the region.

Discover Ipswich by camping while listening to the wildlife in the early morning or late evening, then go camping at Ivory’s Rock Campground .

The great thing about this camp is you are out of town and in nature, but you still have the luxury of a toilet and hot shower.

The kids, hubby or wife can light a fire and roast marshmallows over it.

Or you can walk around the property and if you are lucky you may even see a koala.

This campground is not too far from the Flinders Peak Conservation Estate for all your hiking needs.

St Ivory Campground

These apartment-style rooms are great for families or people who like to be self-sufficient.

The Quest Hotel in Ipswich is located within walking distance from the centre of town with plenty of on-site parking as well.

Ipswich is a small Australian city and region that often gets forgotten about, and when it’s right near the third and sixth largest cities by population, it’s not hard to see why. But just because it’s not as prolific as Brisbane or the Gold Coast doesn’t mean it’s not a great place to visit.

Free Things To Do In Ipswich, QLD.

Ipswich has some fantastic and unique attractions that make the city worth visiting. But it also has an abundance of fantastic free things to do , so if you’re wondering what to do in Ipswich to keep costs down, here are a few of the city’s top places to see.

10. See Ipswich’s Historical Buildings. Ipswich CBD.

Ipswich is one of Queensland’s oldest cities and it pays homage to its heritage of over 150 years by preserving many of its old buildings. The city centre is a visual feast for those who love historic establishments. An easy loop walk or drive around the CBD along Limestone St and Brisbane St will take inquisitive people past endless architectural relics of the past, including the gorgeous facade of the (former) Ipswich Post Office and Central Church.

But don’t just stick to those two streets. Stunning heritage buildings are all over Ipswich. And if there’s one place history buffs shouldn’t miss, it’s the breathtaking St Mary’s Catholic Church on Elizabeth Street.

St Mary's Cathedral is one of Ipswich's most iconic landmarks.

11. Become Enamoured By Art. Ipswich Art Gallery.

Speaking of heritage buildings, one of the city’s most frequented attractions resides within one.  The stunningly modern and inviting Ipswich Art Gallery is situated inside the Old Town Hall building. and is a visual art and social history museum.

With its fantastic range of exhibitions, displays, workshops, performances and extensive interactive programs for children and families, there are not only many interesting things to see for adults, but as someone who visited many times in my youth playing in the hand-on children’s zone and has many fon memories of doing so, I can say it’s easily it’s one of the best places to take the young kids in Ipswich, especially on a rainy or overly hot day.

Visiting the Ipswich Art Gallery is one of the best places to take kids.

12. Have A Picnic And Play At One Of Queebsland’s Oldest Parks. Queens Park.

While still on the topic of heritage, Ipswich’s Queens Park is one of the city’s most notable places of historical significance. That’s because the stunning place is one of Queensland’s oldest parks .

First surveyed in 1842, the sprawling 26-hectare park still retains much of its old-world charm, evidenced in the architecture. Even the trees, some of them are well over 100 years old .

But those aren’t the only reasons people love to flock to Ipswich’s largest park . It’s because it’s a beautiful place that makes them feel a world away. In addition to the abundance of space, shady trees, and gorgeous greenery, there are plenty of picnic tables, BBQs and playgrounds. It’s the perfect place for families to unwind and is only a stone’s throw away from the city.

Queens Park

13. Get Beautiful City Views. Lions Lookout.

Queens Park is a sizeable place, so it’s easy to overlook some of the park’s gems. Lions Lookout is one such spot that people sometimes don’t realise is there especially if they don’t visit the Information Centre. But it’s not one to miss because it has some of the best places to visit in Ipswich for views of the heritage city .

Peering right down one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city, the westward-facing lookout is not only a great spot to visit during the day but an incredible place to watch the setting sun at the end of a long day of exploring.

Seeing the sunset over the city from Lions Lookouts In Queens Park is one of the best things To Do In Ipswich

14. Find Tranquility In The Japanese Gardens. Nerima Gardens.

Queens Park is an expansive place and there are several distinctively different areas to explore. On the southern side of Goleby Road, the Nerima Japanese Gardens are the most serene and picturesque. The ponds, bridges, creeks and huts scattered amongst the beautifully manicured grounds create a tranquil setting perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.

There are also usually plenty of ducks and water dragons hanging around the park. What’s great about the latter is that they usually stay very still, so you can observe these cute reptiles without them skittering away too easily.

A red bridge crossing a pond at the Nerima Gardens

👉 To experience more Japanese tranquillity, enjoy a traditional tea ceremony at the Nerima Gardens. Fees apply.

15. Stroll Along The Bremer River. Riverheart Parklands.

Running through the heart of Ipswich is the city’s most notable geographical feature. The Bremer River is a modestly wide waterway and the overruling reason why Ipswich didn’t become the capital of Queensland. It wasn’t wide enough for ships to travel comfortably and it also doesn’t help that it is a considerable distance from the coast, too, so it didn’t have either of those things going for it that were vital for it to thrive in that during the time. These days, it doesn’t get any water traffic, save for some kayakers, but it is a lovely place to go for a scenic walk.

Riverheart Parklands is an easily accessible spot on the south side of the river where people can stroll alongside the picturesque waterway. More than that, the stunningly photogenic location is a beautiful place for a picnic or BBQ close to the CBD.

The Riverheart Parklands running alongside the Bremer River during a foggy morning.

16. Let The Kids Run Wild. Bob Gamble Parklands.

If you’re looking for exciting free things to do in Ipswich with kids, parents and caregivers can’t go past the Bob Gamble Parklands . Situated on the bend of the Bremer River just down the road from the Riverheart Parklands, this spot is fantastic for your mini-mes to burn off some energy. There are playgrounds, climbing frames, a flying fox and plenty of space for them to run and ride around.

In summer, it’s even better because the zero-depth water park means they can have some fun in the sun and cool off too. It’s a fantastic place to let them play, and plenty of BBQ and picnic facilities mean families can easily make a day out of visiting this delightful park.

17. Go Wild Swimming At A Revered Riverside Park. Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve.

If you’re asking, “What things are there to do in Ipswich for families?” or “Where can I take my kids this weekend in Ipswich?” then one of the top answers is Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve .

Colleges Crossing is one of the city’s most beloved attractions for many reasons. The large, reserve sits on the narrow southern banks of the upper Brisbane River and is a gorgeous spot to engage in a multitude of outdoor activities.

First off, it’s the best place in Ipswich to go swimming in a natural waterway . People of all ages love frolicking in the picturesque calm waters of the park. It’s also dog-friendly , so no one’s fur baby has to miss out on the fun.

Kayaking and canoeing are also beloved pastimes partaken here, while younger children will adore seeing the pelicans and ducks that frequent the reserve.

There’s also a cafe, playgrounds and plenty of space to play games have picnics and BBQs , making it such a fantastic place to take the family for an outdoor adventure in Ipswich. I know I certainly have plenty of fond memories of coming here many times throughout my childhood and adult life.

Note: Partially reopened. The council website says “There will be no toilet facilities, running water, shelter or power available at the site.” Dated 29/4/2023.

Colleges Crossing

18. Relax At Some Beautiful Gardens. Kholo Gardens.

Those looking for even more tranquil places to visit in Ipswich will adore the Kholo Gardens north of the city. This out-of-the-way place sits on the banks of the Brisbane River and has a handful of lovely trails that take intrepid visitors to a handful of picturesque viewpoints. It’s also a lovely place for playing and picnics. Many people also choose this beautiful place to get married.

The pond at Kholo Gardens

19. Enjoy A Family Day Out At Springfield. Robelle Domain.

If you’re looking for another fantastic place to take kids in Ipswich, head to Robelle Domain in Springfield.  The enormous 24-hectare parkland has over 11km of boardwalks , walking tracks, playgrounds, interactive equipment, a zero-level water park and so much more. AKA, it’s kiddy heaven. The sprawling space also has plenty of picnic tables and BBQs so family and friends can gather and have a lovely chit-chat while the kids run around having fun.

20. Enjoy A Swim At The Free Public Pool! Orion Lagoon.

There’s no argument that one of the best things to do in Ipswich is splash around at Orion Lagoon in summer. The Orion Lagoon is a gorgeous swimming precinct also within the Robelle Domain , but because it’s such a fantastic place to visit and one of my go-to places to cool off, it deserves a spot of its own on this list.

It’s a series of interconnected pools that cater to people of different ages. There’s a shallow splash pool for very young children and another one that is 1.5m deep which is for more proficient swimmers and adults.

It’s also lifeguard-supervised and has plenty of shady spaces to sit. In the vicinity is a cafe, toilets, showers and lockers, so visitors can eat, pee, poop, de-chlorinate and keep possessions safe while enjoying these fabulous free-to-use lagoons .

21. See The Military Planes & Learn About Australian Aviation History. RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre.

Australia is a proud defence force nation. But what may come as a surprise to people is that little old Ipswich is home to the country’s most expansive operational air base . The Amberley RAAF Base is a massive recruitment and training facility that works to keep Australia’s front line safe and provides aid to other countries in time of need.

And it’s also home to the RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre . Every third Sunday between January and November, they have open days where the general public can learn more about Australia’s aviation history in the armed forces and its role in global conflicts and disasters.

Get up close to an assortment of military aircraft such as the iconic F-111 , famous for its dump and burn capabilities, in addition to Caribous, Blackhawks and so much more. Also complementing the impressive range of warplanes are service vehicles, reconnaissance equipment, cockpit modules and an extensive range of other defence force memorabilia .

It’s an impressive display, but it’s not only a fantastic attraction to learn about the R oyal Australian Air Force and pay respects to all those who served and their efforts in all the situations they’ve been in, but it’s also a great place to remember the importance of their ongoing roles and teach the younger generation about how Australia maintained its freedom. Because of that, it’s undoubtedly one of the best free places to visit in Ipswich.

👉 Hot Tip: Although the Heritage Centre is free, pre-registration is essential. Click here for more information and to register.

Best Ipswich Walking Trails.

Ipswich may not be known for its walking trails, but there is a handful of them scattered throughout the region worth visiting.

22. Discover Dinosaur Fossils. Denmark Hill Conservation Reserve.

Starting out with something for the kids, Denmark Hill Conservation Reserve in the middle of the city is a fantastic spot to do some walking. The park has a small network of trails that aren’t too strenuous for children, so it’s a great spot to take them.

But it’s not necessarily the trails that’ll delight them. It’s the display of dinosaur fossils that’ll interest their inquisitive minds and the assortment of birds that call the reserve home that they’ll enjoy the most.

23. Go For A Lovely Nature Stroll. Haig Street Quarry Bushland Reserve.

Another walking trail for the kids is the Haig Street Quarry Bushland Reserve . The easy track has lovely views of the small water-filled quarry, and young children will love seeing ducks swimming in the water.

There’s also a fantastic playground for them to enjoy, picnic facilities and a picturesque lookout too.

24. Visit The City’s Iconic Rocky Outcrop. White Rock, Spring Mountain Conservation Park.

One of the best places to go in Ipswich for a moderate walk is undoubtedly Spring Mountain Conservation Reserve . The sprawling untouched forest has an extensive network of trails crisscrossing the reserve, making it a fantastic place to lose yourself in nature for a day.

But if you’re only planning to be in Ipswich once, ensure you accommodate one particular Spring Mountain trail into your schedule: the one to White Rock .

White Rock is an unusual geographical feature that, despite being surrounded by trees, distinctively juts out of the landscape . It’s impossible to miss as you get nearer to the landmark. Equally as interesting is that the weather-worn rock is covered in erosion holes and caves, which makes walking this 6.5km return trail one of my top suggested things to do in Ipswich for adults and adventurous, nature-loving kids alike.

The trail to white Rock is one of the best walks in Ipswich.

Teviot Range.

Teviot Range is Ipswich’s own mountain range. Travelling south out of the city along the Ipswich-Boonah Road, it’s impossible to miss. It lines the eastern side of the road and is a beautiful series of peaks.

And within those mountains lie two sections with a handful of walking trails that are up there with Ipswich’s best.

Teviot Range at sunrise

25. Go For A Longer Hike. Hardings Paddock Walks.

Hardings Paddock is the northernmost of the two sections and has a wide open space for playing and picnicking. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors.

There are also a bunch of walks leading from the paddock that range from short and kid-friendly to ones that are steep and strenuous.

The walk of choice here is the Rocky Knoll and Goolman Lookout Loop , which has challenging but rewarding sections and leads to a lovely viewpoint overlooking the countryside.

View of Flinders Peak from Goolmans Lookout

26. Or A More Challenging One. Flinders Plum Walks.

The other section of the Teviot Range is Flinders Plum. A small park sits at the bottom of Mt Flinders and has one BBQ and a couple of picnic tables. It’s quite an intimate outdoor space , but the appeal of this place is in the walks.

There are three trails here: Sandy Creek, Mt Blaine and Flinders Peak.  Sandy Creek is a flat, often overgrown trail that doesn’t have a lot of visual appeal. Mt Blaine is a great short but steep scenic walking trail that concludes with a lovely view overlooking Flinders Peak.

And last but not least, is the hike to Flinders Peak itself, a challenging but satisfying 6km return walk that takes intrepid hikers to the breathtaking Teviot Range’s highest point . It’s a gorgeous walk with numerous viewpoints and is, undoubtedly, not just one of the best walks in Ipswich , but one of the overall best things to do there too.

Views From Mt Blaine

27. Enjoy A Day Walking Or Cycling A Historic Record-Breaking Trail. Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

For a truly challenging outdoor adventure, people can take on the mammoth Brisbane Valley Rail Trail . Starting from Ipswich at the Wulkuraka Railway Station and concluding in the small town of Yarraman , the 161km track is the longest rail trail in Australia .

It follows the disused Brisbane Valley Rail Line and takes in the gorgeous countryside, through beautiful bushland over historic bridges and picturesque waterways . It’s not just for hikers either. Many cyclists enjoy discovering this fantastic trail, and there are quaint towns with camping spots for those dedicated to accomplishing the whole thing.

Even if doing it in its entirety is too much, the track has numerous entry and exit points , so those just looking to complete a section/s can enjoy this record-breaking trail too. Best of all, for those who love experiencing the outdoors with their dogs, the entire trail is also pet-friendly !

Secret Places In Ipswich.

28. go bushwalking or mountain bike riding. castlehill blackstone reserve..

On Ipswich’s eastern outskirts lies Castlehill Blackstone Reserve , historically the location of a mining operation but now a premiere biking destination . The extensive network of trails caters to all ability levels and has sections that’ll challenge even experienced riders.

There is also a fascinating 1.5km walking trail within the reserve, giving those who prefer to explore on foot something to discover in this fantastic little-known destination.

But what makes this place unique from other multi-use precincts it is like like taking a trip down memory lane. There is plenty of coal mining history to uncover, and just along the Thomas Lewis walking track , you can see the remnants of the overground operations that used to take place here, such as open tunnels, hand-dug shafts , and a water storage tank .

But before the Rylance-Aberdare/Harts Aberdere Mineplace was mined virgin Aberdare coal from this site, it used to be where Brynhyfryd mansion stood. This 24m squared dwelling with 49 rooms, including a 20m observation deck, was referred to as the “Castle” , hence the name of the site.

While it was dismantled and its parts repurposed elsewhere because of the Aberdere Seam caused collapses nearby and there’s nothing left of this estate , except a wall from the old milking shed, walkers can read about the fascinating history of this beautiful long-gone place on the signboards at the summit of the hill, making this simultaneously a fascinating secret places in Ipswich to visit, especially for those who loved heritage trails.

29. Go Military Aircraft Spotting. Behind The RAAF Amberley Base.

As mentioned before, Ipswich is home to the largest defence force base in Australia, the RAAF Amberley Base. It’s one of the most notable things about the city, and unsurprisingly, many military planes are frequently spotted flying in the skies around the facility. It’s quite a magnificent sight.

But for enthusiastic military aircraft observers who want to find the best place to see them up as close as legally possible, there’s one area where the locals go to do just that. At the end of Old Toowoomba Road on the eastern side of the base lies one of RAAF Amberley’s back gates. It’s here where people love to come to see and photograph the incredible aircraft of the Royal Australian Air Force.

A Caribou Military Aircraft coming in to land at the RAAF Amberley Airbase at sunrise

👉 If you want to see more military aircraft doing their thing, Brisbane Riverfire in September every year features an aerial display. Alternatively, there is the Royal Tattoo Air Show.

30. Spot Kangaroos. Several Places.

Speaking of Old Toowoomba Road, another thing down that way is Australia’s beloved marsupial: the sweet endemic kangaroo .

The adorable Aussie icons are pretty hit-and-miss it comes to spotting them in the wild. But for some peculiar reason, they love hanging out next to the air base. Who would have thought that a road, golf course and a playing field between houses and an airport would be where kangaroos live?

There aren’t just a few of them either. Gangs of roos patrol the neighbourhood with their cute faces and adorable hops. It’s one of the few places in Ipswich where you’re practically guaranteed to see some kangas because there are always THAT many of them there.

Another place where kangaroos reside in abundance is on the Wacol Golf Course. It sure as hell makes for an interesting game of golf, but that’s how we do it in Australia. Well, at least this place does. You needn’t play a round to see them, either. Just drive down Boyce Road to the car park, and there’s sure to be heaps munching on some grass.

So while they are not technically in the wild because it’s in the middle of urban development, they are free-roaming, and I’ve seriously always seen plenty at the former very few times are there none at the latter, that’s how much I can guarantee that there is a 98% chance of seeing them.

A small gang of kangaroos at sunset

31. Watch A Movie The Old Fashioned Way Tivoli Drive-In. – $.

Another fantastic thing to do in Ipswich at night is attending a movie screening at the Tivoli Drive-In . Drive-in movie theatres were common in days gone by, but not so much anymore, so it’s rare to come across one, which makes going even more special.

Rock up early in your vehicle, find the best spot to park in front of the giant screen, pull out the popcorn and enjoy the latest flick from the comfort of your car . Some people parked nose in and sat in the front seats while others positioned their vehicles so the boot was facing the screen looked like they were having a snuggly slumber party in the back of their cars with the all pillows and blankets they had.

Better yet, it’s only $10 per car, so it’s a SUPER AFFORDABLE family night out and there are usually two consecutive movies that the entrance fees pays for, so it’s even more value for money. Adding even more icing on the cake, it’s also dog-friendly, so your furry friend doesn’t have to miss out on the fun either! I took my boyfriend and his dog for our first time to a drive-in movie theatre here and we all thoroughly loved the unique old-timey experience.

32. Discover A Stunning Viewpoint Overlooking The Brisbane River. Barnes Lookout.

An alternative route between the beautiful capital city of Brisbane and Ipswich is via Moggill Road and Mt Crosby Road. It’s not the way tourists generally take, but many people do, understandably, like to visit Colleges Crossing, the beautiful must-visit riverside parkland mentioned before, and this next hidden place is not too far down the road.

Barnes Lookout lies in a very awkward place along Mt Crosby Road. Located directly opposite Wattle Road, the parking space is a hard-to-notice bay that sits at the top of a hill and is only a small dirt patch.

The best way to get to it is to have a map with the lookout marked on it, so you know exactly where to slow down beforehand and be heading eastbound as it’s on the south side of the road. Coming in from any other direction would be very difficult and unsafe.

Once you get there, it’s not going to look like much is there, and you may feel like you’ve wasted your time, but there are a few spots where it has it has fantastic views overlooking the sharp bend of the Brisbane River.

The view of the Brisbane River from Barnes Lookout

33. Enjoy Some Family Time By The River. Joseph Brady Park.

Like many other places, Ipswich has an abundance of parks. But along with Queens Park, Kholo Gardens and Colleges Crossing, Joseph Brady Park is one that you shouldn’t pass up. This quiet, out-of-the-way place sits at the corner of the Bremer and Brisbane Rivers and is a beautiful place not many know about.

In addition to the picturesque views of the rivers merging, there’s plenty of open space and a handful of picnic tables and BBQs . It’s just a lovely secret place in Ipswich perfect for those who want to dine or take the kids outside to play in a serene setting.

34. Pay Respects To The City’s Biggest Mining Disaster. Box Flat Memorial.

Ipswich has a proud mining heritage, but on the 31st of July 1972, an u nderground gas and coal dust explosion occurred at the Box Flat Mine at Swanbank and killed 17 people.

Today, there’s a memorial to those who died because of the catastrophe, eight of whom were rescue workers, located on Swanbank Road. Read the story and learn about how Ipswich’s biggest coal mining disaster occurred and how it’s preventing tragedies like this from happening again.

Box Flat Memorial

35. Hop Aboard A Steam Train To A Delightful Rail Ride From Yesteryear. Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway. – $.

Just down the road from the Box Flat Memorial is the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway . Board a beautifully restored steam train and take a journey back to yesteryear. It’s a fantastic adventure for train enthusiasts, history buffs, inquisitive children and everyone in between.

Better yet, dressing up is encouraged, so hop aboard one of their enthralling train rides, including a Murder Mystery adventure , and get caught up in this unique little-known Ipswich experience.

The historic Queensland Pioneer Railway Station.

36. Stop And Stretch The Legs At A Picturesque Park. Pan Pacific Peace Gardens.

Another tranquil place not many people know about is the Pan Pacific Peace Gardens at Goodna. Featuring a large pond, a multitude of tracks, and plenty of grassed areas, picnic tables and BBQs , this beautiful parkland is fantastic for those looking for a peaceful place to escape and let their kids play.

The pond at the Pan Pacific Peace Gardens

37. Go For A Walk Amongst Endangered Tea Trees. Purga Nature Reserve.

Purga Nature Reserve , along Middle Road, is one of the best secret places in Ipswich worth seeking out because there are very few places like it. That’s because it is home to the largest remnant of the protected Swamp Tea Tree in Australia .

It’s rather disturbing to learn that this is essentially all that is left of these beautiful trees especially since this place is so small. But it also means walking amongst these bendy, tatty trees is unique to Ipswich and something you’re unlikely to come across again. I’ve also occasionally seen roos that bound around the lovely place.

38. Explore A Gorgeous Mansion. Woodlands Of Marburg. $.

Twenty kilometres northwest of Ipswich along the Warrego Highway lies a majestic historical estate. The Woodlands Of Marburg is notably a gorgeous 2-story mansion built between 1889 and 1891 and featuring a lookout tower . The property sawed timber before being turned into a sugarcane farm, then becoming a seminary and a grammar school getaway.

These days, the grand establishment is open for the public to enjoy. People can also stay in the luxurious rooms overnight , host private events such as weddings and corporate retreats and most intriguingly, attend haunted mansion tours of the estate.

39. Tear Up The Tracks On Two Wheels. Hiddenvale Adventure Park. – $.

Biking enthusiasts will have no problem heading out into the countryside to find this secret Ipswich gem.  Hiddenvale Adventure Park lies 40 km southwest of the city and has over 110 km of trails .

With such an extensive network of tracks to choose from, everyone, from the novice rider to the advanced hardcore biker, will enjoy tearing up the terrain at this little-known place. It is one of the most exciting places to go in Ipswich that not enough people know about.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Where is ipswich in australia.

Ipswich sits in the Queensland region known as the South East and is a 43km drive southwest of the capital Brisbane along the Ipswich Motorway.

It’s also about a 100km drive northwest of another prominent South East Queensland city, the Gold Coast , along the Pacific Highway, Logan & Ipswich Motorways.

How To Get To Ipswich?

Ipswich has no commercially operating airports that take visitors to the heritage city. However, people passing through Brisbane can easily get to Ipswich via train on the Ipswich/Rosewood line . The journey takes approximately 50 minutes from Central or Roma Street . You will need to purchase a GoCard to ride on the Translink system.

How To Get Around Ipswich?

Public buses service Ipswich city somewhat adequately and access a handful of the attractions on this list. But to efficiently and economically navigate around Ipswich, a car is the best option to make the most out of your trip.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Ipswich?

Ipswich isn’t a place that experiences significantly noticeable weather changes, so it’s a great city to visit any time of year.

Atmospherically speaking, Ipswich experiences relatively stable weather throughout the year, so it’s a great city to visit any time of the year. However, there are a few things to consider.

Starting with summer, the season and even late spring generally experience hot days with temperatures averaging in the low 30s (Celius). It’s not uncommon for it to occasionally reach above 35.

These temperatures are sometimes uncomfortable, even for locals who live with this weather. However, what people enjoy about it is that it’s perfect swimming weather, and they like staying out later thanks to the warm night.

Well, it is when there’s not one of the frequent summer storms lighting up the sky, but that’s something to love about the season too.

Autumn.

Autumn is a great time to visit Ipswich as the weather starts to cool down, but it’s not quite cold enough to warrant needing heavier clothes. It’s more comfortable in general, and the weather is perfect for being outdoors.

Although winter in Ipswich is mild, it’s still cool. The days are usually pleasant, but the nights aren’t the most welcoming.

Still, it’s much warmer than many other parts of Australia. Many people come north to Queensland from the southern states because the winters are too uncomfortably cold down there.

Spring is another great time to visit Ipswich because it’s not quite as searingly hot as summer, and the storms aren’t as frequent either. It’s warm enough to go swimming, but not so much that it feels like all you want to do is swim, and the weather is pleasant enough to stay out late into the night.

Additionally, flowers are coming into bloom, and an explosion of baby animals arrive on the scene. It’s a magical time, except there’s one final thing to note about springtime all across Australia that is hellish.

Magpies! These ordinarily docile creatures become horrifying fiends when spring comes around. Understandably, their instincts kick in, and they want to protect their young. But it does mean heading outside can be a dangerous adventure as magpie parents swoop at anyone or anything they deem a threat to their babies. I generally try to steer clear of parks and anywhere with an abundance of trees, particularly during September when they are most active to avoid risking attack.

Where Can I Watch The Sunset In Ipswich?

A few great places to watch the sunset in Ipswich are Lions Lookout at Queens Park, the David Trumpy Bridge near Riverlink and Colleges Crossing in Chuwar.

Conclusion: Best Places To Visit In Ipswich, Australia.

Ipswich may be a little off the tourist trail for most travellers, but those willing to venture out to the heritage city will be surprised as it has an abundance of fantastic things to do.

13 Of The Best Things To Do In Ipswich

By Annabelle Allpass

12th Jul 2023

ipswich australia tourist attractions

Ok, so you’ve found yourself in the ‘Switch. Or you’re in the ‘Switch and you’ve found yourself… very bored. Do not be fooled, there is a hive of culture, food and things to do hidden behind the long southbound drive to Ipswich, and consider us your guide through all of them. Here are 13 of the best things to do in Ipswich.

Scope Out The Ipswich Central Street Art Trail

Like an exciting game of eye-spy, follow the street art trail to discover a larger-than-life outdoor gallery of street art. With 13 stops, walk your way through the streets of Ipswich to track down all of the installations. Artists featured include homegrown creative powerhouses such as first nations artist Rachel Sarra, Deb Mostert, Fintan Magee, Emily Devers, Mike Shankster and many more. To download the Street Art Trail map head over here .

Explore Queens Park And Nerima Gardens

Who would've thought, Queens Park was the first park to be developed in Queensland, first being surveyed way back in 1842. Its original architectural design dates back to 1862, though you can’t tell with modern playground equipment, barbecues, impressive lookouts and proper leafy foliage throughout the park these days. There's also Nerima Gardens, a Japanese-styled garden to meander your way through. Pack a picnic, because you’ll want to linger.

Indulge In A Degustation At Homage Restaurant

a plate of slice wagyu

Ipswich is firmly situated in the perfect pocket of the Scenic Rim, ensuring easy access some of the best produce in the country. This is undeniably highlighted at Homage Restaurant. Located at Spicers Hidden Vale, a gorgeous spot for a weekend getaway, you can head to Homage for a proper degustation of delicious bites from the region. The retreat’s own market garden supplies an abundance of interesting fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits, while the duck supplier is just minutes down the road, as is the fish supplier. With two firepits, a wood oven and a smokehouse, you can only imagine the delicacies being whipped up here. Head over here to book and find out for yourself.

Hike To White Rock

Lace on your best hiking shoes and trek through the bush to discover White Rock in the Spring Mountain Conservation Reserve. Located just 20 minutes from the Ipswich CBD and 35 minutes from the Brisbane CBD, Spring Mountain Conservation Estate features the distinctive, sculptured, rocky outcrops of White Rock and Spring Mountain. Covering over 2,500 hectares of proper Aussie bushland, the conservation area also features extensive forested ridges, escarpments and valleys that are home to an amazing array of plant and wildlife species—so keep your eyes peeled.

Sample Gins At Imbibis Distillery

Locals of the ‘Swich’ are hard to impress. They like what they like, and normally these are proper institutions that have been around for at least a decade. But a surprising newcomer has captured their gaze (and their grasp) and that is Imbibis Distillery . With their cellar door open every Friday from 10am-6pm, here you can sip your way through a gin-tasting board, a few G&Ts or even their artisan brandy. Imbibis’ gins have earned multiple gold medals from all over the country and have turned even the most gin-adverse into superfans and return visitors.

Get Hands On At The Workshops Rail Museum

a large warehouse with an old train visible inside

Got a train-obsessed little one in the family? Workshops Rail Museum is the perfect day trip to keep them busy and excited all day—for an ultra-silent drive home. Located at Australia’s oldest railway workshops still in operation, make history come alive with hands-on exhibits, multi-media encounters and colourful stories coupled with huge steam locomotives and massive industrial machinery. There's also a cafe on-site with a cracking good brew awaiting you.

Ride The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

Dust off that bike you dropped an obscene amount of money on and cycle on out to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. Currently the longest rail trail in Australia, the 161 kilometres-long Brisbane Valley Rail Trail follows the disused Brisbane Valley rail line up the Brisbane Valley, travelling through farmland, forests, picturesque rural settings and country towns. It’s a scenic and varying-in-difficulty bike ride not to be missed.

Grab A Pint At Pumpyard Brewery

Housed in a heritage-listed building, the use of Pumpyard used to be supplying the town with water—now, its purpose is supplying the town with A1 brews, and epic food in a kid and dog-friendly atmosphere. A distinctly industrial vibe makes for excellent function spaces, not to mention the outdoor area with a shaded garden and chilled-out acoustic live music on Sundays.

Get A Meaty Feed At Phatboyz Smokehouse

a large platter of bbq meats and side

Southern-style barbecue is elite and never up for debate. In Australia though? We are normally experts in the ol’ snag on the barbie—that is, except for the legends at Phatboyz Smokehouse & Kitchen . One stalk of their Instagram and your mouth is insanely watering at their BBQ feasts and it's damn hard to resist yeeting said phone and zooming straight there. They are of course dishing up the best low and slow ultra-tender barbecued and smoked meats like pulled pork, buttery soft brisket, ribs, cheeseburgers and even creations like the Smokehouse Parmi, an innocent chicken parmi topped with delicious wagyu brisket, bacon, onion and cheese. It’s seriously insane.

Get Spooked On A Ghost Tour

If you're game, head out to the creepiest areas in the ‘Switch for a bonafide ghost tour. With stories of restless residents in haunted houses, reviled mental asylums, creepy country pubs and lonely cemeteries, Ipswich is one of the spookiest cities in Australia. By night tour through the city, the Ipswich cemetery or the Goodna Cemetery for a healthy dose of adrenaline. There’s also a haunted mansion over in Marburg that offers guided tours if cemeteries are a bit too creepy for you.

Head Out For Brunch

Ipswich has a surprisingly delightful sleepy country-town feel that you kind of don't pick up unless you're squinting over a delightful cup of coffee and looking at the streets around you. We’ve eaten our way through almost every single one and put all the best ones in a nice collated collection. From healthiest to most dog friendly, they’re all in here —though this writer has a sentimental bias towards Rafter & Rose and their rotating range of goodies.

Scoop Up An Ice Cream At Ungermann Brothers

ipswich australia tourist attractions

Worked up a sweat after the street art trail? Or perhaps your hike? Make a beeline for the gourmet ice cream at Ungermann Brothers . The ice cream connoisseurs here don't just buy store-bought, they make everything from scratch. All their ice cream is made in Ipswich from locally grown ingredients and fused by their team to make the freshest desserts available. They also have a well-thought-out burger menu that all go down deceptively well with one of their decadent milkshakes.

Take To The Skies In A Hot Air Balloon

Date night is sorted with ease thanks to Floating Images Hot Air Balloon. Yes, you read that right, a hot air balloon ride over Ipswich of all places. Floating Images is the first and only balloon company to offer a unique city and country flight in the South-East Queensland region, taking in views of Ipswich, Scenic Rim and Somerset in Greater Brisbane. A world of tranquillity, gentle streams, lovely lakes, picturesque forests, plains, valleys, World Heritage-listed national parks, and historical country towns plays on a panoramic view below you as you steadily glide across the sky (no need to worry about feeling airsick). Head over here to book and find out more.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN IPSWICH

Below we cover the best stuff to do in Ipswich and places to go in Ipswich.

This heritage-listed plantation style mansion has a rich and fascinating history. Tommy and Mary Smith built their commanding family home on the hill and lived there as they raised their 11 children.

Tommy moved his business away from timber milling and into sugar cultivation, creating one of the first rum distilleries in the area. Grapes were planted on the property and they expanded their production to wine and brandy.

Now this premier country retreat offers luxury weddings on the front lawn, along with high teas and other special events. There is a cafe in a separate building beside the mansion that is perfect if you’re looking for a leafy location to enjoy morning tea with great views of the surrounding countryside.

The Sugarmill Restaurant is a great option for a cosy dinner if you’re looking for a romantic evening.  The restaurant is inside the mansion under the glistening chandeliers, where dark, cedar-panelled walls surround you. What a way to transport you back in history!

Tours of the mansion are available, along with ghost tours, as the home has some dark, spooky secrets to share. Accommodation is available in buildings adjacent to the main mansion so you can wake up to views of the grand building (so don’t worry, you won’t be sharing your bed with any ghosts!). It’s an absolutely stunning rural location and is definitely one of the Ipswich tourist attractions you should have on your list.

Ipswich: Things to do

Hot air balloons, one with discover Ipswich logo, in the sky

Whether you’re a first-timer or a frequent visitor, there are countless, fun-filled things to do in Ipswich. Your biggest challenge? Narrowing down what you want to do first. Allow us to assist.   From outdoor, nature-centric activities to heart-jolting, adrenaline-fuelled escapades, or more gently paced endeavours like market-browsing and museum-perusing, Ipswich offers you a chance to choose your own adventure.

Outdoor activities to try in Ipswich

Consider yourself a thrill seeker? Those with a need for speed can put pedals to the medal on a V8 Race Experience on the famed Queensland Raceway circuit. In 2022, the raceway introduced a shiny new Chevrolet Camaro, now available to drive alongside its Ford Mustang.

For a more leisurely paced, scenic ride, Floating Images Hot Air Balloon Flights presents an exceptional vantage point from which to take in the sights of Ipswich from your wicker basket in the sky. Or, go further up (up and away) on a Pterodactyl Helicopter flight and enjoy a picturesque joyride over the region.

Back on solid ground, the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway gives its passengers a fun-filled ride on its restored, heritage train carriages through postcard-worthy countryside.

Inside resplendent Queen’s Park resides the Ipswich Nature Centre , where visitors can meet abundant wildlife and stroll through beautifully landscaped gardens where photo opportunities abound.

While wine-drinking may not ordinarily be classified an ‘outdoor activity,’ a visit to Woongooroo Estate will take you to a vine-swathed, golden patchworked winery that is conveniently also brimming with, well, wine.

Culture vultures, assemble: here’s where to get your cultural fix in Ipswich

Housed by the former Ipswich Municipal Incinerator, now the Incinerator Theatre,  Ipswich Little Theatre Society Inc (or ILT) is a performing arts company to watch (literally). Its evolving line-up of shows is worth checking out when you’re booking a stay in Ipswich. Or, if musical theatre captures your attention, find out which of the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company ’s performances are in action while you’re in town.

In the heart of Ipswich, a lively music venue Studio 188 occupies a former art-deco church that’s now a thriving arts hub that hosts emerging and establishing acts. And, to see big-time bands, well-known comedians, plays, musicals and more, Ipswich Civic Centre is a go-to mecca of entertainment. Or, do as the locals do and visit Limelight Cinemas to see the latest screenings in comfortable surrounds.

As a city with an intriguing history closely linked with trains, planes and automobiles, it would be remiss of sightseers not to set their peepers on Ipswich’s famed The Workshops Rail Museum , the RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre and the Ipswich Historical Society . Those with an eye for design and architecture will be delighted to learn the historical society is home to the Cooneana Heritage Centre’s six architecturally significant buildings, harking back to the 1860s.

JoJo boutique , and  Cute to Boot  (for tiny clothing) are your go-to stores.
