Phuket is Thailand’s largest and most popular island. Located a one hour flight south from Bangkok, the Andaman Sea island and its idyllic beaches, coves and bays are recognised as one of the Kingdom’s best tourist attractions. While Phuket has plenty of accommodation for the budget traveler, it has become a magnet for the well-healed and jetset in recent years because of the presence of a string of ultra-luxurious and super-exclusive hotels. Here’s my top 10 list of Phuket’s best luxury resorts (although my all-time favorite resort in Thailand remains phenomenal Soneva Kiri , which sits on Thailand’s 4th largest but least populated island, Koh Kood, in the Gulf of Siam).

10. THE RACHA

The Racha, one of Thailand’s premier deluxe island hideaways, is set on a pristine, white beach on Racha Island, which is located 12 miles (20 km) or 35 minutes by speed boat from Phuket’s Chalong Bay. The island is known for its natural beauty, excellent corals and stunning marine life. The resort features 85 luxurious villas that range in size and price. The Lighthouse is one of the world’s most unusual hotel rooms as it is a superb five storey villa with private pool, terrace, sun deck and observation lounge offering magnificent 360 degree views over Racha Island and the Andaman Sea.

9. THE NAKA ISLAND, A LUXURY COLLECTION RESORT & SPA

8. COMO POINT YAMU

COMO Point Yamu is a stylish luxury resort located at the tip of Cape Yamu overlooking the Andaman Sea and the dramatic limestones of Phang Nga Bay. Interiors by Italian designer Paola Navone offer a unique expression of contemporary Thai luxury, alongside a COMO Shambhala wellness retreat and two world-class restaurants for Thai and Italian cuisine. Its location above the Cape, overlooking Phang Nga Bay, affords 360 degree spectacular Andaman Sea views, but there is no direct beach access. However the resort does have a private COMO Beach Club on a small island, 40 minutes by complimentary boat shuttle from the hotel.

7. ANANTARA LAYAN PHUKET RESORT

5. KEEMALA PHUKET

Curving shapes and a highly unusual architecture are the inventive dwellings of Keemala, an all pool villa wonderland nestled well away from the Phuket crowds and overlooking Kamala Village and the Andaman Sea. 1. AMANPURI

The best time to visit Phuket

On the Andaman Coast, the best time to visit is during the dry period which is also its high season, this occurs between the months of November to February.

If you want to avoid the crowds it is best to head there in the tail end of the high season from March to May before the Monsoon season starts and the island is buffeted by winds and torrential storms.

The low season begins halfway through May and continues until October. This is called the low season and is the cheapest time to travel there, however, weather conditions on the seas are rough and the island is subject to many tropical rainstorms.

How to get around Phuket

The traffic can be pretty hectic in Thailand and Phuket is no exception. You will find motorbikes weaving in and out of traffic and plenty of cars and tuk tuks.

To travel in style you can rent a car, or even a sports car with Phuket Luxury Cars. Alternatively, if you don’t want to brave the roads you can hire a private chauffeur with Blacklane for a reasonable daily cost which will allow you to travel in comfort.

Renting a motorbike is not advisable as it can be dangerous in Thailand, roads are often badly-maintained and you will find potholes everywhere. The locals joke about the “Thai tattoo” that many tourists sport caused by their motorbike injuries which include scrapes and burns from the exhaust pipes.

There is also a typical scam where upon returning your motorbike your deposit will be kept for “damages” that were existent prior to rental.

What to expect in Phuket

Phuket is a relaxed holiday destination and is ideal for a beach holiday yet there is also plenty on offer for partygoers who may feel more drawn to the red light district and nightlife in Patong, a seedy district in Phuket.

There are also the historic old town which has plenty of temples to visit, shopping malls and restaurants.

ATMs are widely available and cards are accepted at most restaurants and spas. If you want to eat like a local, make sure to bring some Thai Baht (the local currency) to pay for food at street stalls or shop in the markets. Tipping is not common but is much appreciated and a small tip will be greatly valued.

Always make sure to carry sunscreen with you as the sun can be relentless and many people end up burning themselves. If you plan to swim in the sea, make sure to be aware of any red flag warnings as there are often riptides which cause multiple drownings annually.

When visiting temples it’s always advisable to cover your legs and shoulders, a sarong is perfect for this.

Thailand is the land of etiquette and it is important to be respectful when visiting, remember that it is a crime to insult and disrespect the Thai royal family. Pointing with hands or feet is considered insulting and you should never touch someone’s head or hair as it is considered the holiest part of the body and a great insult. And remember to smile! Patong Beach

Patong is the most famous beach resort in Phuket. With its wide variety of activities and nightlife, Patong is an ideal place to party and play. 

Kata Beach 

Kata Beach is a pleasant bay, just a few minutes south of Karon Beach, which entices and charms many visitors with its white sands and clear waters. Very popular with families, Kata is an all-round favorite due to its spectacular palm-lined beach, great restaurants, lively but not raucous nightlife and varied accommodation options – all close to the beach. 

Kamala Beach Kamala Beach is a popular destination for families. It used to be a very quiet beach with only Phuket Fantasea as a highlight, but its popularity expanded with the opening of the new Cafe Del Mar beach club. 

Karon Beach Karon is one of the longest beaches in Phuket, ranking third on our beach popularity page. It enjoys a vast stretch of white sand with a decent choice of dining and nightlife but never seems to draw crowds of tourists (which might be a good thing).

Mai Khao Beach

Mai Khao Beach is situated on the northwest coast of Phuket. This 11km-long straight beach is still blessedly undeveloped as it is part of the Sirinat National Park. A short distance out into the water, there is a sharp drop off into the Andaman Sea, making swimming dangerous from May to November.

Thailand Travel: The Best Luxury Hotels and Resorts in Phuket

You may laugh at the pronunciation, and you may shudder when you think of some of its party towns (I'm looking at you Patong) but Thailand's largest island, Phuket, will always be a special place for me. Not least because Phuket has lots of top quality luxury resorts and hotels. Over the last eight years my partner and I have visited Phuket more than ten times and many of those holidays were spent in beautiful and luxurious resorts, including  two trips with our eldest son so we also know you can find family-friendly luxury hotels on Phuket too!

The Best Luxury Hotels in Phuket

While holidaying in Phuket has changed a lot since we first went there eight years ago - it's a lot busier, more touristy, and value for money can be harder to find - the one thing that has gotten better and better is the variety of luxury hotels and resorts on offer. I therefore thought it was high time I put together a list of the best luxury resorts in Phuket for you to peruse for your next holiday, and I've called on some help from my travel blogging friends so that this list of tried and tested Phuket luxury hotels and resorts is as comprehensive as possible. Now all I need are direct flights from Amsterdam - please!!!

Point Yamu by COMO

The first three resorts listed are those that I've stayed at and loved so I will be reviewing them, and they're sort of in my order of preference but that doesn't mean they're in the order of the most luxurious to least luxurious (because they're all jolly luxurious!). 

The reason I like Point Yamu by COMO the best is because it perfectly combines two things my kind of travel is now all about; stylish luxury and family fun . It's incredibly family-friendly, and yet that doesn't take away from either the style or luxury on offer. It's also a very secluded and peaceful resort so you really feel you get away from it all when you're there, which as a young family was greatly helped by the presence of a fantastic kids club, free baby/toddler food and very professional babysitters.

There is a big "but" coming because it's important you know that Point Yamu is actually on the "wrong" side of the island, i.e. the east coast, which means not great beaches and no dreamy sunsets (although part of the resort is facing west so you do see them!). In fact there is no beach at Point Yamu by COMO as it's positioned a top a small cliff on a peninsular that juts out. This means it has almost panoramic views of the surrounding waters and islands in the distance, but nope, no beach... except there is a beach. (I know, this is confusing but hear me out... ) Out on a deserted island a short car journey and boat ride away (that is completely free - you just need to book in advance), COMO have commandeered a private beach club just for them, complete with Phuket's typical beautiful soft yellow sand and crystal clear waters. Being more pool people than beach people we only went to the beach club once but thoroughly enjoyed the amenities, food and watersports on offer while we did. As with most resorts on Phuket, the transfer time from the airport to COMO is also very manageable, at around 50 minutes.

Kata Rocks 

We stayed at Kata Rocks during our babymoon in Phuket back in 2015 and it was easily the highlight of our whole trip. We were only there three nights but I remember feeling incredibly relaxed while I was there and very sad to leave, which is the best evidence that I love this modern luxury resort. I was apprehensive about staying at Kata Rocks because it's in one of the busier areas of the island (and we normally prefer to stay on more northern beaches) but I didn't have to worry because the resort is tucked away from everything (and everyone) else at the far southern rockier end of the busy Kata Beach. And yes, I did say rocky - hence the name! So again, this is both an example of how we are NOT beach people and how you should skip this Phuket resort if you really want to go somewhere with direct access to a beach (and don't worry plenty of the other Phuket luxury hotels on this list do have just that!).

We had a villa with a private pool which had a spacious living area that easily would have probably been large enough to host dinner both of our extended families had they been there (but hey, thank goodness they weren't!) so was incredibly comfortable for just the two of us and we loved watching the sunsets from our balcony. That's one thing you really can't fault Phuket for if you are on that west side of the island; the sunsets are amazing.

The Surin Phuket 

The other resort we stayed at during our Phuket babymoon was The Surin Phuket , a hotel I'd long wanted to stay in after we rented a house near the resort a few years previously, and this is the luxury Phuket resort you need to go to if you definitely want a beach as it has its own private beach, and it's a beautiful one too. Easy to get to from the airport, The Surin is more of what I consider a traditional Thai resort with more authentic designed wooden private villas and huts, lots and lots of palm trees, and yes, a lovely beach to enjoy, while sipping a mango lassi, of course.

The Slate by Annika of Midnight Blue Elephant

The Slate is one of my favourite luxury hotels in Phuket and located right by the very underrated Naiyang beach . Unlike so many other hotels in Thailand, its design is quite modern, paying homage to the area’s mining history. Lots of steel and metal sculptures mix nicely with the jungle-like surroundings. You are also a very quick transfer away from the airport - less than twenty minutes!

It is the perfect place for anyone and everyone seeking a luxury getaway including families and couples (or solo travelers like myself) as it is a big resort so you never feel too crowded and there are activities for everyone. They offer three pools of which two are adult-only and older teenagers, and one is for families. The Slate also has a variety of restaurants to suit every taste and you are close enough to a stretch of lovely beach restaurants and bars. The nice thing about the area - while there is always something to do, you can find big stretches of beach all to yourself and you are far enough away from the infamous Phuket party areas.

One thing that is a must-do when staying at the Slate is a visit to their beautiful Coqoon Spa which I believe is one of the best in Thailand. Here you can have your treatments in an actual nest-like cocoon and emerge feeling like a pretty butterfly!

Naka by Annika of Midnight Blue Elephant

While the Naka has the perfect romantic setting and its own private beach, it is completely different to what most would consider a romantic luxury resort in Phuket. Clear lines, modern designs and no frills (definitely no folded swans on your bed!) are part of its charm. Each villa offers plenty of room and privacy with stunning views over the bay and some killer sunsets to match. My favourite was the private infinity pool that is actually big enough to do laps in, and the layout of the villa had enough space for a whole family to spread out or in my case a travel blogger with lots of luggage. It's also in a great location on Kamala Beach which is close to other beaches but not too far from the airport so your transfer will be well under an hour.

Keemala is one of Thailand's most luxurious resorts and something of a hidden gem tucked away in the jungle of Kamala in Phuket. It's a 5-star resort, part of the Small Luxury Hotels and features some very unique and memorable hotel rooms. How about staying in a bird's nest overlooking the jungle with your own private pool? or a "Bungalow in the Sky" where you also can enjoy a private pool with gorgeous jungle views. 

If that wasn't enough, Keemala also serves some fine-dining with a special focus on health. The spa area is also excellent with plenty of treatments available for guests. I recommend getting a private bath in herbs, and later on spoil yourself with a traditional Thai massage. 

After that, reserve a table for dinner, and try their very own Himalayan Salt Brick dishes. Their lamb dish cooked on this Himalayan salt brick is heavenly. For drinks, try the butterfly mojito if you prefer non-alcoholic, or go for some rum cocktails from the house cocktail menu if you prefer an alcoholic beverage. In addition to that, most of the vegetables and herbs used in the food and breakfast are sustainably farmed at the hotel so this is very much an eco-friendly resort in Phuket.

All of their rooms are stylishly decorated with some very nice details that gives you a feeling of luxury in the jungle. Especially the bathrooms were unique and gave a rustic feeling with a nice touch of glam, and again, more than enough of comfort and luxury!

• We will provide you with a list of accommodation options based on your budget and any preferences you provide to us once your trip is confirmed – this gives you the opportunity to select the hotel that best suits your taste.
• You must be fully vaccinated to visit Thailand
• You must have a passport to travel to Thailand – Passport valid for a minimum of 6 months after your arrival date and have a least one blank page
• Thailand’s rainy season runs from June to October
• When selecting flights be sure to allow for 1-2 days before your scheduled arrival date as most flights to Thailand take anywhere from 15+ hours if you are traveling from the U.S and other similar territories.

If something goes wrong

Cancellation Policy

• All deposits are non-refundable, however, you can transfer your deposit to a future trip of your choice.
• If you’re over 60 days away from departure, switching to another trip is easy! Simply send an email to your trip coordinator and move your payment balance over to another trip of your choice. Please note if your accommodations have already been booked the property may apply penalties – our team will always try to book flexible options ,however, if the property has a strict cancellation policy the credit applied to your account will be less any applicable cancellation fees by the property.
• Cancellations within 30-60 days of your departure date are subject to a 50% cancellation fee of the total amount paid after the deposit. The remaining 50% balance will be applied as a credit towards a future trip.
• Cancellations made within 30 days of the scheduled departure date or less are subject to a 100% charge of the total amount paid after the deposit.
