Mitchell’s Nursery & Greenhouse

Since 1979, Jim, Judy and Jay Mitchell have supplied North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad area gardeners with one of the largest varieties of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and potted plants. Most plants are grown on-site. Come tour our nursery! In addition to the quality assurance that only a locally owned grower can provide, you will be treated to several special events throughout the year, including our annual poinsettia display the first Sunday in December which boasts more than 9,000 flowers that are sure to take your breathe away. A visit to Mitchell’s is more than a stop to buy plants. It’s a great way to spend part of your day.

My Garden Club has used Mitchell's Nursery for a number of years. Their plants are always so healthy. Our Customers look forward to our Geranium Sale each year. Mitchell's has been wonderful in delivery on time and helping us plan our Sale. If you want a real treat go there for the open house at Christmas. The poinsettias are fabulous.

Great healthy plants. There was no help, no delivery service or assistance in getting anything planted. Wish the service was a bit better and the staff wasn't so harried. Will go back for the plants I can do myself.

It does tend to get crazy here in the springtime. No matter how many seasonal employees we have it is never enough. We appreciate your feedback and invite you to bring your questions to us ahead of the spring season and we will do our best to steer you in the right direction. We apologize for the harried state, but as I said, springtime is our busiest season. We do offer delivery however in the spring it could take a few days to get it scheduled. We also offer a list of landscapers who take care of plantings as we do not offer that as a service. We can also set up a 30 minute consultation that insures that a team member will be available at an agreed upon time. You can find more information on these services on our website, www.mitchellsnursery.com

WONDERFUL family owned business!! Great prices and beautiful plants! It's impossible to visit and not leave with WAY more than you came for! Hanging baskets .... breath taking!

Photo of Nathan D.

Mitchell's is a go to for local, quality plants! They have everything you could ever want to plant or hang around your house. Another person posted about the high prices but this is not accurate. Yes, Mitchell's might be priced a little higher than Lowe's but the guarantee, experience and knowledge that you find at Mitchell's is well worth the extra quarter your going to pay! We will continue shopping here and I strongly recommend them to others!

I buy from people I like and trust. I like These people. They where very friendly and where willing to listen to my landscape needs. I will return again this spring. With other nurseries it was like you are bothering them with questions. They have a large variety and the quality is really good. There prices are like anywhere else and plus you get what you pay for, service and quality.

I was looking for a Seiryu Japanese Maple in January, the dead of winter. Needless to say, no nursery local to my City has any in stock. Emailed Mitchell's and was answered within an hour. The tree is beautiful, even without leaves. The staff are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and willing to help. Was impressed with Judy who knew exactly how many of these trees they had available in their vast collection of trees and shrubs. Can't wait until Spring to visit again!

Thank you for visiting our nursery. We are always excited to share our knowledge with our customers. Spring is just around the corner and we look forward to seeing you again.

Mitchell's just keeps getting better. It had been at least 8 or 9 years since I visited Mitchell's Nursery, but I was in King for the afternoon and decided to visit. I found a wide variety of annual and perennial flowers as well as shrubs of all kinds. The plants are healthy and beautiful, and the Mitchell's are very knowledgable about planting, fertilizing, and caring for the plants. I left with a flat of 15 quart-size potted perennials of various kinds - many of which I was unfamiliar. One of the plants they carry is the Princess Lily or Alstroemeria, a gorgeous flowering plant that very few nurseries in this area carry. Happy gardening!

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson prop bet picks and PGA Tour predictions

T he PGA Tour is back in Texas for the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson this week after Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry came away as the champions of the Zurich Classic over the weekend. The 1st round from TPC Craig Ranch begins Thursday.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets among the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

There are co-favorites this week, with Jordan Spieth and Si Woo Kim both holding +1600 odds. Jason Day , the 2023 champion, has the 3rd-best odds at +2000, followed by Alex Noren (+2200). Will Zalatoris was in the field but he withdrew Tuesday due to a back injury flare-up.

TPC Craig Ranch is a par-72 and 7,414 yards, often ranking as one of the easiest courses on tour. It's a wide-open layout with very few hazards to trip up players. It's why the winning score has been between 23-under and 26-under in each of the last 3 years.

WATCH: PGA Tour is live on ESPN+! Get ESPN+

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Jordan Spieth (+350)

Admittedly, it's really hard to get behind Spieth with the way he's been playing lately, but he's back home in Texas and has good course history (2nd and 9th). Even as inconsistent as he's been this season, he has the ability to flip a switch very quickly and get back on track.

Alex Noren (+450)

Noren has finished between 9th and 23rd in each of his last 5 starts this season and has results of 12th and 21st in 2 starts at TPC Craig Ranch. He's a perfect blend of recent form and tournament history.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Top-10 picks

Tom hoge (+320).

Hoge should find himself in contention just based on his ball-striking, but he's also putting the ball well enough to win soon, too. In his last 2 individual events, he's finished 18th and 14th.

Keith Mitchell (+375)

Mitchell has played really well this season, with his lone hiccup recently coming at the Houston Open where he missed the cut. That was right after his collapse at the Valspar Championship but he's since gotten back on track with a T-14 at the Valero Texas Open.

Byeong Hun An (+275)

An finished 14th here last year and he was on a roll this season before missing the cut at the Players and Valero Texas Open. He bounced back with a T-16 at the Masters and with this week being a birdie fest, he should be in the mix.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Top-20 picks

Nate lashley (+333).

Lashley has finished 17th and 23rd in his last 2 starts in this event and earlier this year, he came in 3rd at the Famers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. All we need is a top 20 and it's a good value at +333.

C.T. Pan (+333)

Pan came in 4th place at this tournament last year, the first time he played this event. He's currently on a 6-event made-cut streak and if he plays the weekend at TPC Craig Ranch, he'll have a decent shot at cracking the top 20.

Jhonattan Vegas (+500)

Vegas came in 23rd at the Corales Puntacana Championship, his 2nd top-25 finish this season. Back in 2021, he finished 9th and he made the cut (59th-place finish) in 2022, which are his lone 2 starts in this event.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold .

Byeong Hun An (-110) vs. Min Woo Lee (-110)

It's not that I don't like Lee this week, but I just prefer An. Lee hasn't taken that major step forward that many were expecting this year and he missed the cut last year when An finished 14th.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Top English

Aaron rai (+160).

Rai ranks 27th in SG: tee-to-green, but it's been his putting holding him back. It's not a great field for Englishmen, with Matt Wallace having the 2nd-best odds at +350, so I'll take Rai.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – First-round leader

Alex noren (+3300).

Noren ranks 7th on tour in 1st-round scoring average this season. He fired a 65 here in the opening round in 2021, which was tied for 7th.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – To make the cut

An, min woo lee and hoge: yes (+165).

I like all 3 players this week with how open the course is. An and Lee are good drivers of the football, while Hoge is a terrific iron player.

Michells in Europe

Michells Europe Lda, is the latest creation in the group and is based in Lisbon, Portugal. Realized as a logical extension of the business already established with a number of suppliers in Europe. Being closer to the market we have been able to optimize co-operation with our various suppliers and partners and specifically develop new relationships.

Our focus remains firmly on the quality of products that we buy whether plant material or allied trade. Its critical for us that our suppliers grow or produce their products with respect for human health, animal welfare and the impact on the environment. Our purchasing is increasingly focused on real artisanal, ethically produced and sustainable product.

The Homestead

A farm is not a farm without animals, so almost two years ago we decided to assemble some cattle to graze the unused stretches of pasture around the nursery.

Our homestead creates the holistic farm experience for our customers who visit our production facility and trading showrooms.

Happy chickens produce fresh eggs daily, organic veggies are grown that are enjoyed by the staff and our adorable sheep and handsome cows, Belle and her son Benji, keep the lawns in check.

We also supply honey when available…

We are not experts at any of this but loving and learning every day.

The farm is also a key property within the greater Dassenberg Coastal Catchment Partnership, a climate change adaptation corridor along  the Cape West Coast of Southern Africa, one of the highest priorities for conservation action in the country. The farm contains remnants of Critically Endangered Atlantis Sand Fynbos, with numerous threatened Cape lowlands Fynbos species spanning nearly half the extent of the farm – around 10 ha. These remnants are now conserved under a Conservation Stewardship Agreement, since 2015 with CapeNature and the City of Cape Town: Biodiversity Management Branch as partners. Part of the initiative is to secure the catchment area of the Witzands aquifer, mostly spanning the private land along the Klein Dassenberg hills with the actual aquifer contained within the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve, critical for Cape Town’s long term water security.

After the water restrictions of 2004/2005 and again in 2017/2018 the Company set about consciously to decrease the footprint of the production facility on the farm, the goal to reduce the impact on the environment and precious living ecosystem. In 2018 funding was obtained to clear all remaining invasive alien species, mostly Australian Acacia’s from the Conservation Area with continuous follow-up work done annually. The aim being the restoration of the natural ecosystems and protection of important ecological infrastructure. Fences between the San Michell Conservation Area, Nirvana Fynbos Nature Reserve and the City’s Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve have been removed to allow unrestricted movement of wildlife and with active restoration taking place, the following threatened Fynbos species have been recorded for the first time and are currently thriving within the conservation area;

  • Two-tone retro Cape Gorse ( Aspalathus retroflexa  subsp.  bicolor ), Critically Endangered
  • Stiff tentfig ( Ruschia tecta ),  Endangered
  • Hairy Bigstyle ( Macrostylis villosa  subsp.  villosa ),  Endangered
  • Sandflats Baboon root ( Babiana nana  subsp.  nana ),  Endangered
  • Sandveld Fountainreed ( Cannomois arenicola ),  Endangered
  • Snakestem pincushion (Leucospermum hypophyllocarpodendon  subsp.  canaliculatum),  Vulnerable
  • Koekemakranka ( Gethyllis ciliars subsp. ciliaris ), Near Threatened

It has not been difficult to accomplish extraordinary restoration results in comparatively few years, as has been achieved by the neighboring farm, Nirvana Fynbos Nature Reserve.  www.nirvanafynbos.co.za .

The Five: Stories behind top new teams at Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Need to Know

Change Text Size

Team golf returns to the PGA TOUR spotlight with the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where the intrigue starts with how and why the teams were formed. Some seem obvious, others not so much.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay – Presidents Cup/Ryder Cup mainstays who won here in 2022 – are running it back, as are defending champions Nick Hardy and Davis Riley. Luke Donald and Edoardo Molinari, captain and vice-captain, respectively, for Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph in Rome, also return.

That said, it’s the duos who will be making their Zurich Classic debuts that could define this tournament. The Five this week explores those new teams, but before we start, here’s a quick reminder of the format:

Each two-man team will play Four-ball (best ball) on Thursday and Foursomes (alternate shot) on Friday. After the cut – 33 teams and ties – they will play Four-ball on Saturday and Foursomes on Sunday.

Now, let’s talk teams.

1. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry

The Irish are headed to New Orleans on something of a whim. As the story goes, McIlroy asked Lowry to play the event during a drunken lunch after the Ryder Cup. “I said after, ‘You wanna play the Zurich together?’” McIlroy told GOLF.com. “And we were like, 'Yeah, let’s do it.'”

Several players seemed to hit a wall in the final round of the RBC Heritage, post-Masters fatigue finally catching up to them, and McIlroy (74, T33) and Lowry (75, T64) were among those who seemed to run out of gas. But if the teams at the Zurich Classic are only as strong as they are close, watch out for these two.

McIlroy, 34, and Lowry, 36, go back a long way. They represented Ireland at the 2007 European Amateur Team Championships. McIlroy turned pro later that year, with Lowry two years behind him, and they’ve remained close since – they were teammates again at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome.

“To see what he does with his time and his game and how he improves day to day… I’m very fortunate to have, in my eyes, one of the greatest players to play the game so close.”

McIlroy echoed a similar sentiment in an interview with the Irish Independent last fall .

“I feel over the last couple of years that Shane's been one of my biggest advocates,” he said. “He's a great person to be around, and a really good influence on me. There's parts of (Lowry) that I really love; I see how he lives his life; I see how he is with his girls, and the relationships he has with the people from home that are still close to him. He enjoys his life and everything he's worked for, and I think spending time with him makes me a better version of myself.”

Maybe that will add up to a victory in NOLA.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry's best highlights from 2024

2. Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris

It’s a tandem that makes all the sense in the world, statistically. Zalatoris is one of the best tee-to-green players on the PGA TOUR, while Theegala holds that distinction for his short game. They’re hot, too – Theegala just finished second at the RBC Heritage. (Zalatoris struggled in the final round to finish T44.)

They’ve known each other since their junior golf days back in California. Theegala grew up in Chino Hills, Zalatoris in the Bay Area. Although Zalatoris would move to Dallas, Texas, for his high school years, they continued to run into each other in amateur golf circles.

“I’ve known (Theegala) since I was 12 years old, gone up the ranks together,” Zalatoris said. “Just such a good dude. If anything, I was just hoping he already didn’t have a better offer.”

The pairing made sense in other ways, too, as Theegala’s caddie, Carl Smith, and Zalatoris’ caddie, Joel Stock, stay together on the road. Theegala and Zalatoris, who play practice rounds together and are represented by the same management group, talked about it casually at first, and Zalatoris wasn’t sure he could fit it into his schedule with the Dallas-hosted CJ CUP Byron Nelson the following week. Playing this week in New Orleans would mean six straight weeks of golf through the PGA Championship.

“Then finally I realized, we would have a really good chance of winning,” Zalatoris said. “It’s such a fun week and it was just A plus B equals C. I’m looking forward to it.”

3. Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard

This one doesn’t need much explanation, right? It would be weird if this weren’t a pairing.

It will be a special week for the Højgaard twins, only one of whom (Nicolai) earned his PGA TOUR status last year. Rasmus finished just outside the top 10 of the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking.

Rasmus Højgaard on his goal to earn PGA TOUR card

The two will be reunited for the week in New Orleans, which could be a precursor for what’s to come. Rasmus is playing well again on the DP World Tour and is projected to finish inside the top 10 to earn PGA TOUR status for 2025. Nicolai contended at the Masters Tournament (T16).

They won’t be the only tandem with family ties, nor the only twins (Parker and Pierceson Coody).

4. Joel Dahmen and Keith Mitchell

Early clubhouse leader for best vibes of the week, Joel Dahmen and Keith Mitchell’s pairing seemed so obvious that it was shocking that it had never happened before.

Better late than never. "Cashmere Keith" and "Bucket Hat Joel" are taking on New Orleans. Their friendship dates back to their time on the Korn Ferry Tour, where they overlapped in 2016 and 2017, and they’ve remained close on the PGA TOUR, where each has won once.

A solid week would be welcome for both players, as each is comfortably inside the FedExCup top 125, but neither has cracked the pivotal top 50. They may lead the field in fun.

5. Eric Cole and Russ Cochran

It's a curveball here at the end, but one that is well worth it.

Russ Cochran, 65, has been stuck on 599 career PGA TOUR starts for more than a decade. His last PGA TOUR event was the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii (T41). It looked like that landmark 600th start would never come. Cochran accepted that, but then Cole came calling.

Here’s the backstory: Cole’s caddie is Reed Cochran, Russ’s son, and Cole plays with both father and son back in Tequesta, Florida, a suburb of Jupiter. Cole floated the idea to Russ, who was apprehensive at first. Eventually, Cole wore him down.

“I thought it would be pretty cool to get him his 600th,” said Cole, who finished T33 at the RBC Heritage. “Russ was kinda shaky about it, and then I stayed on him pretty hard and he eventually he came around. He’s been getting ready for it.”

Reed will stay on Cole’s bag, while Russ’s other son, Ryan, will caddie for his dad. Russ played last week’s PGA TOUR Champions event, shooting 73-77 to finish T75 but at least knock some of the rust off at the rain-shortened Invited Celebrity Classic.

Cochran’s first PGA TOUR start came 43 years ago, and the 1991 Centel Western is his lone PGA TOUR win. He has five PGA TOUR Champions victories.

“It’s a cool family week, and in New Orleans it will be a cool celebration of Russ,” Cole said.

2024 Zurich Classic money: Here’s how much every player made

Rory McIlroy smiles Sunday at the Zurich Classic.

Chris Graythen/Getty Images

The Zurich Classic of New Classic may be a team event, but that doesn’t mean a win this week isn’t life-changing.

While stars like the Irish duo of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have their futures secure, teams like Zac Blair/Patrick Fishburn, Chad Ramey/Martin Trainer and Ryan Brehm/Mark Hubbard stand to gain a lot more.

There are no world-ranking points available this week, but each member of the winning team still receives a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour, even if they aren’t currently a member, and 400 FedEx Cup points. They’d also gain entrance into this season’s three remaining Signature Events, the next coming in two weeks at the Wells Fargo Championship.

“Yeah, it’s kind of why you’re out here playing is to have opportunities like this,” Blair said Saturday night. “I’ve been out here a handful of years now, so I know that they don’t come that often, and so we’ll do our best to go take advantage of it.”

But ultimately, the rich got richer as McIlroy and Lowry prevailed in a playoff over Trainer and Ramey for their 25th and third PGA Tour wins, respectively.

Each player of the winning team also comes away with $1.286 million for their troubles. The total purse is $8.9 million .
