Getting around Monaco by public transport

Free Buses In Monaco Will Circulate Till 2023

Monaco may be best known for its fancy cars and world-famous Grand Prix racetrack, but there are many ways to get around this small hilly country. And using public transport is often good for the environment. Whether by bus, boat or helicopter, we have the information you need below.

Monaco’s bus service offers an excellent service of modern, clean buses that wind and weave around the Principality. Tickets can be purchased on-board from the driver or at the CAM office. The bus tickets can also be bought conveniently in the special machines that are located by many of the bus stops. You can pay there by cash and by card.

Buses

CAM Office Address: 22/24 rue du Gabian Monaco Tél.: +377 97 70 22 22 Fax.: +377 97 70 22 23

Opening Hours: 8h30-16h30 from Monday to Friday

There are six bus lines that traverse Monaco and run from about 7am to 9pm, running every ten minutes during peak hours.

Line 1: Monaco Ville, Monte-Carlo, Saint Roman Line 2: Monaco Ville, Monte-Carlo, Exotic Garden Line 3: Fontvieille to Hector Otto Line 4: Saint Roman, Railway station, Place d’Armes, Fontvieille Line 5: Larvotto to Hospital Line 6: Larvotto beaches, Sporting, Fontvieille

Monaco Night Buses

Looping through the Principality at night are two distinct night-bus lines operating from 9.30 pm:

Line N1 – Albert II Fontvieille towards Larvotto Beach towards Saint-Roman towards Casino towards Albert II.

This line is a mix of the day buses N ° 6 and line N ° 1

Line N2 – Monaco-Ville to the Exotic Garden and back

This line takes exactly the route of the day bus N ° 2

The PRINCESSE ANTOINETTE stop in the outward-bound direction and the MONTE-CARLO stop in the return direction makes it possible to change between the two night-bus lines N1 and N2 and thus optimize your “nocturnal” travels.

The night buses run every 30 minutes until 12.20 am and make all the main stops. The night buses run from Monday through Friday and until 4am on Saturday and Sunday.

Information and map of the bus lines (and public lifts/escalators) can be found here .

Bateau Bus is the bus by sea and it’s solar-electric powered. The grand and beautiful Port Hercule is just that—grand. It could take a lot of effort and time to walk around the port. But the little ‘boat bus’ shuttles you straight across from Quai des Etas Unis to the Cruise Terminal. The bus runs every ten minutes from 8am to 8pm and costs the same as a normal bus fare.

Monabike – Electric Bikes

The Monaco Bus Company (CAM) installed a series of electric bicycle stations which have been very popular. So popular that this July the whole network has been greatly expanded in Monaco and even integrated with the surrounding communities.

These Monabike ‘velos’ are pedal-assisted to help you up the steep gradients and arrive looking fresh. With screens that give you speed, mileage, and battery charge, you will always be in control. The battery lasts anywhere from 20-25km on one charge and stations can be found across Monaco, near the main bus stops.

The bikes are easy to rent, even for as little as 1 euro to go from one station to another. Better still there is a monthly subscription for unlimited use for 6 euros per month. Check the current fares and all the details here .

Public Lifts & moving walkways

Part of Monaco’s unique beauty is the way the city is stacked, with high-rise buildings over high-rise buildings. A beautiful sight from afar, but it can be difficult if you need to get from point A to point B. Fortunately, there are a series of lifts and escalators to take you up (or down) to where you need to be.

These moving walkways will take you:

  • From the Terraces of the Casino to the Congress Centre Auditorium and to Boulevard Louis II
  • From Place St. Dévote to Monéghetti
  • From Place des Moulins to the beach
  • From Princess Grace Hospital Centre to the Exotic Garden
  • From Avenue de la Costa to the harbor
  • From Avenue des Citronniers to Avenue Grande-Bretagne
  • From Larvotto Boulevard to Saint Romain

The Monaco Ville Rail station is also a great way to move several levels up the city.

Monaco Taxis

Sometimes the most convenient way to get around is a private driver to take you door to door. There are many taxi ranks in Monaco, including The railway station, Avenue Princesse Grace (next to Hôtel Beach Plaza), Next to the Monte Carlo Fairmont Hôtel, Avenue des Spélugues, The Métropole, Avenue de la Madone, and Avenue de Monte-Carlo (near the Casino) and Saint Roman near the Eastern boundary of Monaco. The main Taxi service company is Monaco Prestige. They offer 24/7 service and have a fleet of vehicles on hand. Their number is: +377 93.15.01.01

Be aware that during busy periods demand for taxis can exceed the number available – and so waiting periods can at peak times be quite long.

Harmony Between French and Monaco Taxi Drivers?

New Electric Taxis

At the initiative of the Prince’s Government, a fleet of 20 electric taxis have been introduced. These 100% electric vehicles carry out journeys mostly within Monaco, although they will also serve the Monte-Carlo Beach, Monte-Carlo Country Club and Marriott Hotel. The basic fare, not including waiting time, is set at €15.  It is possible to hail the taxis in the street.

There are opportunities to link to Cap d’Ail, Beausoleil and Cap Martin with an increased fare supplement of about 10 euros. Ask the driver. Seven vehicles will be available at all times: 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The white eco-taxis have a unique visual identity. A special user app,  Taxis Monaco , is available and can be used to order or book a taxi from your smartphone in just a few seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you want to try something more exotic like an Electric private hire Tesla Taxi, contact:

+33 6 07 13 07 17 [email protected]

Mobee Car Sharing

Mobee is the car-sharing service of the Principality of Monaco. 25 vehicles are available 24/7 and across the full territory of Monaco.

Based on the principle of “free floating” or self-servicing, it allows you to pick up and return the vehicles anywhere in Monaco. There is no designated centre. Take advantage of the free parking on-street and in the 14 partnering parking lots!

Easy to book on 15 minutes notice. You are only charged for driving time. Check out prices and book on-line .

Renovated Heliport

Monaco Helicopter

But why even stay on the ground when you can fly? Need to get to Nice faster than you can say: “Terminal un”? Then get down to the Heliport and catch a flight. Monacair offers 6 – 7-minute flights to Nice Airport!

Monacair’s partnerships with airlines are key to the helicopter company’s success with this route. Working with airlines allow customers to leave Monaco only one hour before their flight at the airport. Passengers can obtain their boarding pass to their final destination in Monaco, have their luggage checked-in to the final destination and enjoy a direct transfer to the boarding gate.

Passengers arriving at Monaco heliport are chauffeur-driven to their final destination and enjoy the same service when they leave.

Monacair has a regular service that departs Nice Airport or Monaco every 15 minutes and cost 140 euros. They are located at each terminal and offer subscription rates. They also offer private charter services.

Heli Securite offers one-way and roundtrip flights to Nice Airport, plus private charters, panoramic flights and more.

Also offering helicopter service for private flights is Azurhelico.

The Principality of Monaco, a small city-state overlooking the pristine blue waters of the Mediterranean, is a tourist destination famed for its glamour and wealth. The Palais Princier, former home of Princess Grace and current home of her son, Prince Albert II, is at the top of the cliff-bound medieval Monaco-Ville as its mentioned in Monaco tourist map.

The principality of Monaco is famed as a place where the rich and famous gather for a luxurious holiday on the French Riviera. Despite being the 2nd smallest nation in the world, there are plenty of casinos, designer shopping malls, opulent beach clubs, and world-famous resorts dotted all over this city state as you can see in Monaco tourist map. Monaco also has a rich history. Check out medieval landmarks like Monaco-Ville, Palais Princier, and Monaco Cathedral, along with museums such as the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium. Tourist can enjoy warm climate for most of the year, though the best time to visit Monaco is in early autumn, when the summer crowds have dissipated and hotel rates are lower.

Gorgeous and glittering Monaco is a tiny royal principality on the French Riviera. Less than two square kilometers in size, Monaco is perhaps the most glamorous little stretch of land on the planet. There is a seductive quality to the scenery, with its deep blue sea, graceful palm trees, and vibrant flowers as its shown in Monaco tourist map.

The State Apartments of the Palais du Prince is a private residence but is open to the public at certain times of the year as one of the best attractions in Monaco. Visitors can see the sumptuous Italianate gallery adorned with 16th- and 17th-century frescoes; the gilded "Blue Room" featuring a resplendent decor of blue and gold; the wood-paneled Mazarin Room; and the Empire-style Throne Room as its shown in Monaco attractions map, which has an impressive Renaissance fireplace.

The highlight of Musée Oceanographique is its aquariums containing rare species of fish and marine life in magnificent shapes and colors. There are three Aquariums. There is also a Turtle Island and a Touch Tank where visitors can feel a sea urchin, stroke a starfish, or hold a baby shark. One of the most delightful things to do in Monaco is visit the gloriously scenic Jardin Exotique which is one of the best attractions in Monaco. The garden is in the Fontvieille area (the more modern section) of Monaco, outside the historic center as you can see in Monaco attractions map.

The cathedral is the burial place of the Princes of Monaco and houses tombs of past sovereigns Prince Rainier and Princess Grace as its mentioned in Monaco attractions map. Another noteworthy feature of the sanctuary is the Episcopal throne of Carrara white marble. The cathedral has an impressive grand organ that is used for religious services as well as concerts of holy music. Les Jardins Saint-Martin lie near the Musée Océanographique and would be an ideal complement to visiting the museum as a famous attraction in Monaco. The gardens feature a statue that commemorates Prince Albert I who was renowned as a marine researcher.

Overtourism: from barcelona to lake como, locals start campaigning.

Protesters against the current tourism model on the island of Gran Canaria, on 20 April, 2024.

It's the summer of the Paris Olympic Games and Taylor Swift's Eras Tour across European cities, but for locals, this summer is already heating up to be one of protests—across Lake Como, Barcelona, the Canary Isles, Venice and Amsterdam, residents are already fighting what they perceive as overtourism.

Barcelona Locals Wipe Bus Route Off The Map To Combat Overtourism

Residents living in La Salut often have to contend with tourists ramming the 116 bus route as it heads towards Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell—the second most visited attraction in Barcelona, after the Sagrada Familia basilica.

The Guardian reports that locals living on the 116 bus route successfully petitioned the local council to ask Google and Apple maps to take the bus route offline. One local joked that the next thing would be to ask them to remove the park altogether.

Bloomberg makes the case, however, that a better solution could have been to raise the bus fares or to run more buses to the park to alleviate overcrowding in the city.

Lake Como Wants To Introduce An Entrance Fee To Combat Overtourism, Just Like Venice

The Italian lake is the third largest in the country and receives 1.4 million tourists a year, many of whom are day trippers, who generally don't bring in as much revenue as long-term guests and locals complain of overcrowding.

The Mayor of Como says he wants to introduce an entrance fee to combat overtourism, reports EuroNews . Mayor Alessandro Rapinese is thinking of introducing a Venise-style daily charge (due to go live in Venice for the first time this week).

The Lake Como area has had a huge influx of non-residents buying homes in the area and then renting them out to tourists—since 2016, the number of holiday homes and private rentals has increased by 673%.

Incidentally, Venice residents recently protested against the entrance fee, because they believe the city needs a new vision that focuses on housing its residents rather than controlling its tourists—the city has more tourist beds than resident beds.

'My Misery; Your Paradise'—Locals In the Canary Islands Fight Overtourism

Locals in the Spanish Canary islands are planning mass protests over what they believe to be the unchecked flow of tourists to the islands—in 2023, the archipelago received 14.1 million tourists, the most it has ever had in one year.

One group in Tenerife is planning a hunger strike because of two new hotels and graffiti can be seen saying 'tourists, go home'—lots of residents hit the streets to protest. Like Lake Como, Venice and Barcelona, an increase in rental costs has priced residents out of the local housing market.

Amsterdam Says No To New Hotels, To Combat Overtourism

Dutch authorities announced that no more hotels will be permitted to open in Amsterdam as the city clamps down on overtourism, reports The Washington Post . New hotels will only be given the go-ahead on a one-out, one-in basis and even then, new hotels can only take an old one's place if it is considered to be an improvement—more sustainable, say, than the last. The official statement said that they wanted "to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors.”

The latest policy on new hotels is just one of a long list of measures to bring in more sustainable tourists and tourism behavior. For the past few years, the Dutch government has been trying to discourage people from just visiting a few sites and to promote more sites across the country—encouraged by the zeal with which local tourists were trampling tulip fields to take Instagrammable-worthy pictures.

In 2023, the goverment launched a campaign targeted specifically at British men aged 18-35 who traditionally wreak havoc across Amsterdam on party weekends—when would-be British tourists type certain terms into their search engines, such as 'stag party in Amsterdam', 'cheap hotel Amsterdam' or 'pub crawl Amsterdam' they see pop ups that inform them of huge fines if they misbehave and the risk of returning to the U.K. with a criminal record.

Fear That Netflix's Ripley Could Increase Overcrowding On Italy's Amalfi Coast

Critics have generally loved Andrew Scott's version of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley on Netflix but some locals are fearful that it will bring even more crowds to a coast that isn't short of a tourist or two.

The village of Atrani, which features in the show, sits next to its crowded neighbor Amalfi (it's a thirty-minute stroll along the coast) and Airbnb ( quoted in The Guardian ) says it saw a 93% increase in bookings to the Atrani area since the show aired. For this village of 800 residents, where the roads in and out are often rammed in the summer months, it increases the fear that more visitors might become unmanageable.

As Bloomberg reports , Europe is the continent warming the fastest and so, the issue of overtourism poses additional challenges—2023 was Europe's largest wildfire on record and produced its costliest flood.

In one of the first signs of water conflict between residents and tourists of 2024, the north east of Spain is planning on restricting water to tourists if the current drought continues. Catalonia would limit tourists staying in hotels to 100 litres (26 gallons) per day, although this does not include the water used to top up swimming pools.

Barcelona bus route removed from map apps to tackle tourist overcrowding

Residents welcome removal of number 116 route, often used to get to Park Güell

While some places will go to any lengths to attract visitors, residents of La Salut neighbourhood in Barcelona are celebrating a move to wipe themselves off the map.

For years, residents had complained that they could not get home because the number 116 bus was always crammed with tourists visiting Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell. The park is the city’s second most popular attraction after the Sagrada Familia basilica.

Now they have the bus to themselves after the city council arranged to have the route removed from Google and Apple maps.

“We laughed at the idea at first,” said César Sánchez, a local activist. “But we’re amazed that the measure has been so effective.”

Luz López, 75, told elDiario.es: “Before, the bus was so full even people with walking sticks couldn’t get on.”

Albert Batlle, the deputy mayor of security and coexistence on the city council, said that as well as improving mobility around Park Güell, “we needed to eliminate references to the 116 on the internet”.

Batlle declined to admit or deny that the council had asked for the route to be removed, while a Google spokesperson would only say they would not delete a bus route unless requested to do so by the council.

Sánchez, who has been campaigning for eight years for the council to address the problem, joked: “The next thing we need to do is to get the whole of Park Güell removed from Google Maps.”
