EXPERIENCE WITH TAUCK

TAUCK'S YELLOW ROADS – Journey from Stockholm to North Zealand, from Copenhagen to Oslo and on to the fjords of Norway

A private, after-hours visit to Stockholm's Vasa Museum introduces maritime treasures – without crowds – including the  Vasa,  an intact 17th-century ship

TAUCK VALUE INCLUDES

Guided visit to the Gol Stave Church

Exclusive early-entry private visit to Denmark's historic Frederiksborg Palace

Enjoy the natural beauty aboard a ferry cruise on the blue waters of Geirangerfjord

Take a "troll car" up to Briksdal Glacier for a trail walk to spectacular views of the glacier plunging to the valley below

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Sweden offers a modern take on history, combining its medieval heritage and maritime treasures with an urban-cool ambiance and staggering scenic beauty. Denmark is a rainbow of islands, gardens, schooners and crowning gems where mermaids and storytellers inspire new stories. Fjords head up a parade of natural wonders in coastal Norway, ferrying you aboard boats, troll car and private coach to glaciers, waterfalls, farms, country hotels and homes of artists who find music for their soul here.

Grieg's troldhaugen in bergen, visit edvard grieg's home & museum at troldhaugen.

One of the leading pianists and composers of the Romantic era, Bergen's favorite son, Edvard Grieg, brought the musical traditions of his native Norway to international prominence through his work during the second half of the 19th century. Recognized as Norway's national composer, Grieg is a beloved and revered figure throughout his native country – and his home town of Bergen – to this day. You'll enjoy a guided visit to the Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen, a complex in Bergen comprising Grieg's former villa (Troldhaugen), where he resided with his wife Nina from 1885 until his death in 1907; the couple's gravesite; the hut where Grieg composed his music; a museum dedicated to his life and work, completed in 1995; and the Troldsalen concert hall.

Denmark's Frederiksborg Palace

Early-entry private visit to frederiksborg palace, a danish renaissance masterpiece.

Dating to the early 1600s as a royal residence for the King of Denmark and Norway, Frederiksborg Castle – built atop three islands in a lake near Copenhagen – has been through many trials, tribulations and changes over the centuries. Following a disastrous fire in the mid-19th century, this Danish Renaissance masterpiece was reconstructed and restored according to its original plans and drawings. Today, it's the Danish Museum of National History… and you're invited to discover its grandeur on an early-opening private visit.

We really enjoyed our night in tiny Flam. The fjords and glaciers of Norway were absolutely stunning.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally,  you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Denmark, Sweden and Norway; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,  you should contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries visited on this tour to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

The deposit amount is $600 per person

Final Payments:

Final Payment is due at Tauck's Wilton, CT office  60 days before departure. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Failure to make payment will be a considered a cancellation by the guest and all applicable cancellation fees will apply.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Luggage Handling and Restrictions

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you are a resident of the U.S.,  no vaccinations are currently required for travel to the countries visited on this tour. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information about vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country,  please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries visited on this tour to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Scandinavia is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. The visits to the palaces and castles, including Frederiksborg and Rosenborg, require climbing some steep stairways and walking moderate distances from the motor coach park to the entrance of the sites as well as within the grounds. There is a forty-five minute stroll on day 13 inside Vigeland Park in Oslo mostly on flat terrain. Perhaps the most challenging walk is at Briksdal glacier on day 9; the twenty-minute walk to the glacier is over rocky, uneven terrain. Although it can be rewarding and even exciting to get close to the glacier, the walk may not be for everyone.

All hotels on this itinerary have elevators, with the exception of the Toftaholm Herrgård due to the historic nature of the property. If you have difficulty walking, be sure to advise your Tauck Director at the beginning of the tour so that a room close to the public areas may be requested.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. The smaller hotels in Scandinavia tend not to have designated non-smoking rooms although they will make every effort to accommodate this request.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The southern halves of Sweden and Norway share in the climactic benefits of the Gulf Stream with Denmark. Their temperate climate has few extremes of heat or cold. The average high temperatures from May through September range from 55 to 75˚F (13 to 24˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). The lowland area around Oslo in Norway is the driest and warmest part of the country in summer. Not only is Bergen the warmest city in Norway, but it is also probably the wettest, averaging approximately 80 in (2,000 mm) per year.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking  here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip.  Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. The summers in Scandinavia are warm, but medium-weight sweaters and jackets are recommended. A waterproof raincoat with a removable lining will give you the versatility you will need in this northern climate. A topcoat is recommended for spring and fall.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket and tie for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee; however, these fees may be very expensive.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Scandinavia:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

On our trip, we met a few other Americans. Told them about Nordic Visitor and they were impressed. I found Nordic Visitor's website very user-friendly. I love that all the documents sent was super easy to just hand the concierge and the 2 excursions we booked already had our names down. I loved the 2 excursions in the package we chose. Overall, it exceeded my expectations and I'm so glad I chose this particular trip.

1. Which destinations can I explore with Nordic Visitor?

Nordic Visitor can plan your trip to the following countries in Europe:

  • •  Iceland
  • •  Scotland
  • •  Ireland
  • • The UK
  • •  Norway
  • • Switzerland
  • •  Sweden
  • •  Finland
  • •  Denmark
  • •  Greenland

We also offer Northern Europe packages in the following destinations:

  • •  Scandinavia – a group of countries, comprising Norway, Sweden and Denmark
  • • The Alps – visit Austria, Germany and Switzerland on an Alpine getaway
  • •  Lapland – a region spanning the northern reaches of Sweden and Finland
  • •  Svalbard – a remote Norwegian archipelago located in the Arctic Circle

2. What is the difference between Scandinavia and the Nordics?

The term "Scandinavia" commonly refers to Norway, Sweden and Denmark. " Nordic countries " is used definitively for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. This also includes their associated territories of: Svalbard, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Åland Islands.

You may have guessed from our name that we originated as a Nordic travel agency. We now also specialise in Scotland and Ireland, two Celtic countries that are close to the Nordics.

3. Which Nordic country should I visit?

All of the Nordic countries are worth visiting at least once in your lifetime! Essentially, where to go in the Nordics depends on the sort of sights and experiences you’re looking for on your next getaway.

If it’s volcanoes and glaciers you seek, opt for a trip to Iceland. This island country will mesmerise you with its geysers, ice caves, black sand beaches, waterfalls, and so much more.

In Norway, the country with the longest coastline in Europe, you can expect a land of majestic mountains and fjords. Meanwhile, Denmark flaunts one of the world’s coolest capitals, Copenhagen, awash with cobblestone streets and first-class restaurants.

As for Sweden, you could soak up trendy cities, picturesque countryside and sandy beaches in the south of the country. Or head north during the winter months to experience the snow-laden scenery of Lapland, a region that Sweden shares with Finland.

For a Nordic aurora borealis tour , the top places to go are Iceland, Northern Norway, Lapland, and Svalbard. They are all located within or very close to the Arctic Circle, near the North Pole, where northern lights activity occurs. Here you have the best chances of witnessing this natural phenomenon in the Nordics.

Read this guide to the Nordic countries to help you choose where to visit.

4. How do you travel between Nordic countries?

As the Nordics are neighbouring countries, situated in Northern Europe, you can travel easily between them.

The Scandinavian nations, in particular, are very well connected with rail, road, sea and air links. You could drive, fly or take the train between Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and travel by ferry between the latter two countries. There’s also a Baltic cruise connection between Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Iceland, on the other hand, is located further away from the other Nordic nations. So if you want to explore Scandinavia and Iceland on a Nordic combination trip , the most convenient way to travel between them is by flying. The flight time from Bergen, Norway to Reykjavík, Iceland is 2 hours 15 minutes.

5. What is the best month to visit the Nordics?

The best month to explore the Nordics varies based on what you want to see and do. As these countries are located in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is from April to September, and winter is between October and March. Each season has its own appeal and reasons to visit.

For mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and green scenery, opt for a summer tour in the Nordics . This time of year is best for enjoying the outdoors and activities like hiking. Plus, if you travel to the northernmost parts of the Nordics, you’ll witness the midnight sun phenomenon.

The months of June, July and August are the most popular, as it’s when you get the best weather and summer holidays. April, May and September make up the “shoulder season”, and it’s an ideal time to travel in the Nordics if you’d prefer to be around fewer visitors.

A winter Nordic tour , on the other hand, offers different kinds of experiences. Think landscapes draped in frost, activities in the snow, and festive vibes. What’s more, as the night skies are darker for longer in winter, you have better chances of seeing the northern lights.

6. Who are Nordic Visitor’s travel experts?

Nordic Visitor is proud to be a local tour operator in Northern Europe, with offices in the capital cities of Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. Our travel experts are based in these countries and have extensively explored the regions they specialise in.

You’ll be assigned a dedicated travel consultant who will use their in-depth knowledge to arrange your tour for you. They’ll share personal recommendations and can customise your itinerary to match your particular interests.

Or if you need to change your travel dates, we'll rearrange all your tour details in one place, so you have a hassle-free experience.

Read our Book With Confidence terms to find out how you can have peace of mind with risk-free, flexible booking.

If you do not have cancellation insurance with us, normal booking terms apply and we recommend you check with your private travel insurance provider.

9. Why use Nordic Visitor instead of booking everything myself?

At Nordic Visitor, we’ll save you time and effort by planning your getaway for you, based on your needs and requests.

When you arrange your trip yourself, you have to carry out all the research and book all parts of your tour separately. If you need to make changes to your itinerary, you have to do all the legwork yourself.

Nordic Visitor takes care of everything on your behalf, based on your needs and requests, so you can relax and look forward to your trip.

Our travel experts will design your route, planned in a way that’s both comfortable and convenient. For example, they’ll ensure you don’t cover the same stretch of road twice unnecessarily. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share all their insider tips with you.

This means you can leave all the hassle of trip-planning to the experts, who are based in Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. They know our destinations inside out, so you can rely on them to incorporate the best sights and hidden gems that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.

What’s more, you get access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Should you need any support, we are only a call away. And if you need to make changes to your itinerary for any reason, you can leave all of that to us as well.

10. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?

We understand the importance of having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring. To ensure you get the best experience, we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation for you.

The hotels and guesthouses we feature in our tours are all highly rated by visitors. Our local experts have carefully selected each accommodation partner for their exceptional standards of quality, location and character.

As we have regional offices across the destinations we specialise in, we have close connections with our suppliers and we visit them regularly. This is why we are confident that the accommodation on your trip with us will meet or even exceed your expectations.

11. Will Nordic Visitor customise my tour?

Yes, you can easily customise your tour online. Add extra nights, upgrades and day trips to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you’d like to make your itinerary more bespoke, don’t hesitate to speak to your dedicated travel consultant.

They will gladly tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests in mind, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or history. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.

If you’re travelling to Europe with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Europe , they’ll happily add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.

Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.

12. Can I choose the arrival date?

You can choose from a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season you are interested in. All of our tours are available to purchase online, so pick the best date for you from the availability calendar.

If your travel plans have changed and you want to amend your arrival date, contact your travel consultant to rearrange your booking.

13. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights?

Return flights to your destination are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.

14. When should I book my flight tickets?

We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Nordic Visitor packages come with daily itineraries and all of your accommodation organised for you. So once you have all of the arrangements confirmed, you can make an informed choice on your flight times. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

15. What should I pack for my trip?

During your time in Northern Europe, you’ll be discovering new cities, towns and countryside. And with time spent outdoors, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Here’s our recommended packing list for visiting Northern Europe:

  • • Walking boots or shoes with good grip

From Copenhagen to Helsinki

We enjoyed the tour, overall. We considered it a taste of Scandinavia. There wasn't enough time in Oslo to experience it at all, and we were definitely rushed through other cities. But we knew this going in. The guides on the buses did n excellent job of providing information in a variety of languages. We really enjoyed the various tours on the water, from taking a cruise across a fjord, to the car ferry, to the overnight ferry on the Baltic Sea. The only drawback is that we were on a bus for many hours, many days, hardly anyone wore masks, and some people were coughing. In the end, I tested positive for COVID two nights before the trip ended, and my husband and I had to leave the tour and isolate ourselves in the hotel room. It ruined the rest of our vacation. I would urge Europamundo to be more careful about COVID and require masks on the bus.

What a great trip! This was helped by fine weather for the 9 days and our fantastic guide, Pall. He related to the group very well regarding the history of Iceland and told a few stories, some historical and some mythical. There was some sickness in our group and this was handled calmly and efficiently by Pall. Sure, Iceland is expensive, but the beautiful scenery makes it a must to see. Thank you Exodus

I couldn't have planned a better trip to Norway on my own. We loved the structure and assurance of the itinerary while having the flexibility to explore on our own. Travelling in January, Nordic Visitor's emergency number gave us peace of mind in case of bad weather. The hotels were excellent and the locations were very convenient to public transportation and places we wanted to visit. The excursions were fantastic. Want a stress-free adventure? Let Nordic Visitor lead the way.

Nordic Visitor made planning for the trip an incredibly smooth process. In particular, Juliana has been absolutely fantastic to work with. She went over and above to ensure we had a great trip, and we owe the success of our trip to her. She was always available for questions, guidance and was ever so responsive to anything we needed. Thank you for an incredible time, we will return to Nordic Visitor for planning all future trips in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions About Norway Fjord Tours

You may have a few questions about your upcoming tour to the Norwegian fjords, so we’ve answered the most commonly asked ones to save you time. If you want more travel inspiration then check out our Norway Travel Guide , and for booking information read our general  FAQs or our  Booking Terms and Conditions .

1. What created the fjords?

Created in the ice age, fjords were formed when glaciers retreated from land, leaving behind U-shaped valleys and steep cliffs.

2. Where are the fjords in Norway?

Norway is home to more than a thousand fjords and most of these are located on the north and west coasts of Norway. There are no fjords in Norway’s interior east coast or on its south coast.

3. What’s the best way to see the Norwegian fjords?

The fjords of Norway are must-see attractions that are renowned for stunning natural beauty. There are a variety of ways to see them, but the best way will depend on how you prefer to travel.

One of the most popular ways to see Norway is via its reliable and highly-rated railway network and picturesque Norwegian cruise routes . Everything on our tours is arranged for you, so you’ll already have your tickets and timings well in advance of your journey. Our train and cruise packages also give you a great amount of flexibility, with you choosing how much time you want in each area and where you want to add days and activities within the tour.

Another reason to travel this way is for spectacular views. You’ll get to see beautiful landscapes from Northern Europe’s highest railway the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen), and seascapes from the historic Hurtigruten coastal ferry . You can also travel the same scenic coastal route on a more modern Havila voyage.

However, if you want to discover Norway by car and drive the renowned roads such as Ørnevegen ( Eagle Road ) with its beautiful views over the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord , then a self-drive package is for you. With the independence that comes from renting a car, you can visit areas and attractions that are off the beaten path, and dine in restaurants that are further away from the city or town centres. As well as this, your package will include a detailed map of Norway with your accommodations and personalised route marked.

If you want a local guide to take you to each attraction and share their knowledge of Norway, then a small group tour could be an ideal way for you to travel. Unlike many other tour operators, we have smaller groups so that you can spend more time with your guide and don’t feel rushed at any of the attractions. These packages are also more agile as you travel on minibuses which can get you to harder-to-reach areas.

Whichever travel style you prefer, you can put your trust in your dedicated consultant to plan an amazing journey for you and look after all the bookings and logistics.

4. What are the must-see attractions in Norway's fjords?

On your adventure along Norway’s fjords, you get to enjoy the surrounding green areas, fjord villages and plenty of must-see attractions.

UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord is well-known for its beautiful mountains as well as the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil waterfalls. Named after a local folktale, the Seven Sisters waterfall is divided by separate streams that “dance” down the mountainside. The Bridal Veil waterfall drops off a cliff edge, appearing like a delicate thin veil over the rocks.

Another waterfall you should visit is 183-metre high Vøringfossen waterfall. One tip is to view it from the Måbødalen valley where you’ll get a great view of it crashing over the rocks below. This viewpoint will take some walking though, so be sure to bring walking boots and ask your travel consultant about activity levels.

If you’re a nature or geology enthusiast, then you may have heard of the Jostdal glacier (or Jostedalsbreen) the largest icecap in mainland Europe which covers nearly half of Jostedalsbreen National Park. Visit for rocky landscapes, moraines and pretty glacial rivers.

Your trip would not be complete without trips to the many surrounding towns and villages. Stop off at the Old Town of Stavanger for narrow streets and traditional 18th-century houses as well as the oldest church in Norway, Stavanger Cathedral. The charming village of Flåm is nested in Aurlandsfjord and is popular for wildlife watching and as a stop off point for the Flåm Railway .

You can find all these attractions and more in our itineraries, but if want to visit an area or sight that isn’t on the route, speak to your travel consultant to arrange this.

Want more inspiration for your trip to Norway? Read our article on the must-see attractions in Norway  or the best Norway getaways for couples .

5. When is the best time to visit the fjords?

Norway's seasons each carry different benefits that will affect the sightseeing you do, and the activities on your fjord travel wish list.

If you visit from June through August, you’ll get to enjoy the sunshine during the days and nights thanks to the midnight sun phenomena. As well as this, you can join fun activities such as bird watching and kayaking.

The winter months are colder and will require more layers, but the mountains are usually snowy and you’ll have a better chance of seeing the northern lights if you visit between September and March.

Whatever season you choose, our tours have reliable departure dates that can be reserved online.

Read our extensive guide to Norway’s seasons and when to visit, on our blog.

6. What is the best fjord in Norway?

With over a thousand fjords in Norway, it’s difficult to pick the best one. We can certainly share the most popular and well-known ones though, starting with the King of the Fjords, Sognefjord.

The deepest and longest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord stretches over 100 miles inland and is home to the famous Flåm Railway and UNESCO-listed Urnes Stave Church . Aptly named for its magnificent views and vast green landscapes, this fjord is a must-see for nature lovers. The Sognefjord in a Nutshell® route or the more popular Norway in a Nutshell® route are great ways to explore the fjord.

Home to Trolltunga, a famous rock formation and viewing point, Hardangerfjord is a perfect destination for lovers of outdoor activities and hiking. You can even walk behind waterfalls such as Steinsdalsfossen and try the cycling and hiking trails of Hardangervidda National Park.

Named after the colourful city of Trondheim, Trondheim Fjord is one of the most convenient fjords to explore. In the summer, there are plenty of car and passenger ferries that will take you to coastal towns like Kristiansund and the island of Munkholmen.

These are but a few suggestions, discover more beautiful fjords and the best way to visit them in our online guide.

7. Which fjords in Norway are UNESCO sites?

In Norway, two fjords are awarded UNESCO World Heritage status: Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord . Both sit in the western region of Norway and are 120 km apart from one another. They are awarded protected status by UNESCO for being the “most scenically outstanding fjord areas on the planet”.

8. How deep are Norway fjords?

Norway’s fjords have varying depths but the deepest fjord in Norway is Sognefjord, which measures at 1308 metres (4291 feet) from its basin to ground level. To put that into perfective, it’s the length of more than 14 American football fields or taller than 14 Statues of Liberty.

9. What airport to fly into Norway for fjords?

When travelling to Norway’s fjords,  Bergen Airport  is an ideal arrival point as it is situated on the west coast of Norway and close to the likes of Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. However, Oslo Gardermoen Airport is the most convenient for international flights in and out of Norway and a major transport hub to the rest of Norway.

We advise that you start your tour in Oslo and travel to the fjords, as this would mean you also get to explore Norway’s capital city.

For an in-depth look at Norway’s airports and airlines, check out our travel guide on flights to Norway .

10. Can I choose my arrival date?

Yes, we have a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season. All our packages can be purchased online, so you can immediately see if your preferred dates are available. However, if you want to book your trip to Norway longer than a year in advance, contact our travel consultants.

11. How much can I customise my fjord tour?

The amount of customisation you can choose depends on the way you are travelling. Self-guided train and cruise and self-drive tours are more flexible than small group tours as dates are not pre-booked. Our self-drive packages are created with independence in mind, giving you the choice to spend time at the attractions you want. Similarly, our self-guided tours can be altered with extra nights along your journey.

However, for small group tours, you can personalise them by extending your stay at the beginning and end of your journey. You can also alter your trip with additional activities such as kayaking through the fjords and taking a tour of the Stegastein Viewpoint.

12. When should I book my flight tickets?

We suggest that you hold off booking your flights until you’ve received confirmation that your preferred tour is secured. Of course, you can look over flights for timings and dates. Once you’ve had your tour confirmed by your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

If you have any questions or if your flights have changed, you can always contact your consultant .

13. What should I pack for my trip?

The weather in Norway can change at a moment's notice, so we advise that you bring plenty of warm layers, waterproofs and accessories like a light backpack for day tours and gloves and insulated socks. You should also bring:

  • Warm jumpers or fleeces
  • Flask or travel cup
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Sensible walking shoes, boots or trainers
  • Warm socks (specifically for winter travel)

For more ideas on how to dress well for the Nordic climate, check out our convenient packing guide .

Frequently Asked Questions About Iceland

For more information about visiting Iceland with Nordic Visitor, read on. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here for your convenience. You can also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our Iceland Travel Guide .

It’s good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. If you want to know more about our processes and payment details, check out our booking terms and FAQs .

1. Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe place to visit. You’ll find it’s a peaceful country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. And it’s good to know that Iceland has excellent, modern healthcare services.

As you may already know, Iceland does have active volcanoes but eruptions occur once every 4 years on average. There’s also minor seismic activity on the island, but noticeable earthquakes are rare and the Icelandic Met Office keeps a good eye on these.

Your dedicated, Iceland-based travel consultant will stay on top of these matters, as well as changing weather reports, to keep you safe on your journey. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals for directions or advice either, as Icelanders are used to travellers and tend to be helpful.

For the latest visitor guidance, you can check this Iceland travel update or read our blog: Is Iceland safe to visit ?

2. What language do people speak in Iceland?

Icelandic is the official language of Iceland . It derives from a North Germanic language similar to Old Norse that has changed little since the Viking times. You’ll get by very easily with English in Iceland though, as most locals speak it. Many are multilingual in other Nordic or European languages as well.

If you want to learn some local lingo, then here are some basic words and phrases to practise:

  • Já = Yes
  • Góðan daginn / Góðan dag = Good day
  • Gott kvöld = Good evening
  • Hæ / Halló = Hi / Hello
  • Bless = Goodbye
  • Takk = Thank you

3. What is the best time of year to go to Iceland?

The best time to visit Iceland depends on the attractions, regions and activities you want to experience.

For instance, you’ll have milder temperatures and longer daylight hours in the summer compared to the winter, which means more opportunities to explore.

With better weather, you can access remote regions – like the Westfjords and central highlands – between May and September. The mountain roads here close in winter as driving conditions are too difficult.

This makes Iceland summer tours ideal if you’d like to spend lots of time outdoors, discovering the island’s many natural wonders. It’s also the best time to see wildlife, like puffins and whales, and to enjoy activities like hiking.

On the other hand, if you’re keen to chase the northern lights, you’ll have a better chance of seeing them if you visit Iceland in winter . The reason is that the nights are long between October and April, so you’ll have more hours of darkness to spot the colours of the aurora.

Time your Iceland trip for the winter months, and you’ll also get to soak up landscapes draped in frost and snow. You may wish to discover Iceland at Christmas or New Year to revel in the festive atmosphere.

For more advice on when to go, check out these guides:

  • Best time to visit Iceland
  • Iceland in summer
  • Iceland in winter

4. When and where can you see the northern lights in Iceland?

The best time to take a northern lights tour in Iceland is during the winter season, between October and April. At this time of year, you have a higher chance of spotting the aurora borealis because the nights are dark enough to see the lights shine and flicker.

For the best chance of viewing the aurora borealis, visit secluded areas away from the light pollution of towns and cities. The darker conditions will allow you to make out the colours of the northern lights more vividly.

Read these guides for more information about the aurora borealis:

  • What are the northern lights?
  • How to see the aurora borealis
  • Best times and places to see the northern lights in Iceland
  • Top aurora hotels in Iceland

5. How many days do I need to visit Iceland?

There is so much to see and do in Iceland that you should decide your trip duration according to how many days or weeks you have to spare.

For a short break in Iceland, your best bet is to explore Reykjavík and the surroundings. Within 4 days you could visit the capital’s many museums, shops, galleries and restaurants. There are thermal pools to swim in and festive markets at Christmastime.

You could also see top sights like Gullfoss waterfall, Þingvellir National Park, and the Geysir geothermal area, which includes the hot spring Strokkur. These are all part of the Golden Circle driving route in the south. You can experience the Golden Circle on a day trip from the capital, or over the course of a few days.

Or extend your itinerary and see more of South Iceland . In 7 days you’d get to visit black sand beaches, glaciers, and other breathtaking natural attractions that Iceland’s south coast is known for. Don’t miss the chance to bathe in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, an inviting geothermal pool.

Another great option is to visit West Iceland . Enjoy a northern lights adventure in the remote Westfjords, or head to the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Called “Iceland in miniature”, the Snæfellsnes peninsula is just 90 kilometres (56 miles) long and has a bit of everything. Discover volcanoes, lava fields, waterfalls, hot springs and fishing villages here.

If you have between 10 days and 2 weeks to spare, then you’ll get to see the many beautiful corners of Iceland. As well as the southern and western regions, you can explore East Iceland and visit North Iceland too by travelling the country’s Ring Road.

Venture east to admire fjords and gaze upon the mighty Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs float on the blue waters. Continue north to Akureyri and the Lake Mývatn area to marvel at the Krafla volcano, mud pools and craters. You can warm up with a dip in the Mývatn Nature Baths.

Essentially, the more days you have to spend in Iceland then the more you will get to experience. In winter you’ll also increase your chances of spotting the northern lights!

Check out our blog for inspiration on how many days to spend in Iceland .

6. What are the best things to do in Iceland?

Iceland may be small, but it packs a punch with its wild scenery, intriguing culture and mind-boggling natural wonders. Here are some of the top things to do in Iceland :

  • Marvel at waterfalls
  • Hike in national parks
  • Dip in hot springs and pools
  • Hunt for the northern lights
  • Walk along black sand beaches
  • Taste Icelandic cuisine
  • Admire glacier lagoons
  • Venture into ice caves or lava tunnels
  • Learn about Icelandic legends
  • Look for whales and puffins
  • See geothermal wonders and volcanoes
  • Go horse riding

Read more on our blog about the best Iceland tours to add to your itinerary .

7. What’s the best way to travel in Iceland?

The best way to explore Iceland depends on what you wish to do and how flexible you’d like the tours to be.

Iceland self-drive packages are ideal if you want to set the pace and travel independently. On a road trip, you can take your time discovering top sights and explore off the beaten track. You also have more flexible timings and the freedom to go further afield for excursions and restaurants.

Another excellent way to travel is with a knowledgeable guide and a small group of fellow travellers. Nordic Visitor’s escorted group tours of Iceland give you the opportunity to learn from a local. They’ll take you to each attraction and share their knowledge and favourite spots.

Nordic Visitor only organises small minibus tours with a maximum of 16 people. This ensures you have a more relaxed and personal experience compared to large coach trips. This is a popular choice for our many solo guests and for those who don’t feel comfortable driving.

If you want something exclusive and would prefer to travel alone or with friends or family members, then choose from our privately guided tours of Iceland . You’ll have a local guide all to yourselves for a more personal experience.

Or you could pick an Iceland multi-day package : a city stay with quality-tested accommodation and activities arranged each day. You’ll get to enjoy guided excursions with local experts, but then have free days to explore on your own.

If you want more information, contact our Iceland team and they will help you decide which travel style would suit you best.

8. Who are Nordic Visitor’s Iceland travel experts?

Nordic Visitor is proud to be a local tour operator in Iceland. Reykjavík – the capital city – is where we are headquartered, and it is where the company was founded in 2002. Our Iceland travel agents are based here and have extensively explored the country.

You’ll be assigned a dedicated travel consultant who will use their in-depth knowledge to arrange your Iceland tour for you. They’ll share personal recommendations and can customise your itinerary to match your particular interests.

Fortunately, if you’re arriving from Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you will not need a visa to visit Iceland. You must have a valid passport with at least 3 months left before it expires.

If you’re visiting from outside of these countries, you will need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter Iceland. This is a short-stay visa that permits you to travel to Schengen Area member countries for up to 90 days.

Read more about getting to Iceland on our travel guide.

13. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?

Having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring Iceland is really important. That’s why we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation in Iceland for you.

The hotels and guesthouses you will experience on your Iceland tour are all highly rated by visitors. Our local experts have carefully selected each accommodation partner for their exceptional standards of quality, location and character.

As our Iceland travel team is based locally, we have close connections with our suppliers and we visit them regularly. This is why we are confident that the accommodation on your trip with us will meet or even exceed your expectations.

14. Will Nordic Visitor customise my Iceland tour?

Yes, it’s easy to make customisations to your tour online. Add extra nights, upgrades and day trips to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you’d like to personalise your itinerary further, be sure to ask your dedicated travel consultant.

They will happily tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or wildlife. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.

If you’re visiting Iceland with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Iceland , they’ll gladly add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.

Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.

16. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights to Iceland?

Your flights to Iceland are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.

17. When should I book my flight tickets?

We recommend that you check flights for timings and dates, but do not purchase them until you’ve booked your Nordic Visitor tour.

18. What to pack for Iceland?

Due to its northerly location, Iceland’s climate is cool. And as you’ll probably want to spend time outdoors on your trip, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Here’s our recommended packing list for Iceland :

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Warm hiking socks
  • Quick-drying travel towel

You can read more about what to wear in Iceland on our experts’ blog.

Our experience with NV has been a joy. Alda has been terrific and very accommodating to our needs and we could not have asked for more from you or her.

Nordic odyssey, august 2018, i have already recommended nordic visitor to others..

I have already recommended Nordic visitor to others. The price was very reasonable, and accommodations top notch. As we did the self guided tour the side tours available that we took were top rate. We enjoyed being able to spend time exploring on our own and not being bound by a full schedule. The transportation was wonderful. Our guide, Alda, was very helpful.

The golden triangle of scandinavia, august 2016, completely lived up to our expectations.

Irja was wonderful! She put our trip together perfectly and our entire visit from one country to the next was seamless. It could not have been any easier or well coordinated. My emails were responded to promptly and all my questions were answered thoroughly and with patience. I usually plan all my trips myself but it was so nice to let Irja know what I wanted and let her do all the tedious planning and booking. It was really amazing and our trip completely lived up to our expectations! I feel like a spoiled traveler now because Irja took a lot of the travel planning headache away from me and she did a really great job. We really appreciated the complimentary upgrades too!

Alan, United States

The golden triangle of scandinavia, april 2016, high degree of professionalism.

Probably the most important service I received was Cecilia's prompt answers to all my questions. My requests were handled expeditiously. As for the accommodations, they ranged from very good to excellent. Of particular note is the fact that Cecilia had to react quickly to hotel employees' strike at one of the hotels. She quickly found arranged for me to stay at another hotel, which was most impressive (both her ability to improvise and the quality of the hotel). She was also quite helpful in recommending certain places of interest to visit and the advisability of purchasing city passes for transportation and sightseeing.

Golden Route of the Nordic Countries, May 2019

Superb customer service.

Mikael provided superb customer service. Very pleased with his attention to detail. He was very courteous and quite helpful.

Anosha, United States

Nordic odyssey, july 2018, we will definitely use your services when we travel again.

We were very happy with everything. We did four countries during our tour and we enjoyed it very much. We were also able to customize many options which was great. I have to say a huge "thank you" to Alda. She was very knowledgeable and very helpful. She also helped us customize our tour the way we wanted. We will definitely use your services when we travel again.

We´d like to return.

The tour was highly enjoyable. We visited some wonderful places. Whilst we like to be independent, the organisation of our transport and accommodation was very good and allowed us to really relax and unwind. There are many places we'd like to return to. More time in Norway is certainly on our agenda!

Classic Scandinavia, June 2019

The location of the hotels could not have been better.

The location of the hotels could not have been better - all centrally located with access to points of interest and public transport. Transportation between cities was also well-planned.

We were just thrilled with how wonderful the trip was, and are very grateful to Alda for all of her hard work and flexibility with our changing needs and many requests. Having all of the trip details planned by you allowed us to truly relax and enjoy an unparalleled vacation.

The golden triangle of scandinavia, september 2017, nordic visitor handled everything very professionaly.

Nordic Visitor handled everything very professionaly.

Scandinavian highlights by car, september 2016, highly recommended.

My only question is: Why is there not an "Excellent" option? Our holiday was most excellent in every way...! From my first email enquiry regarding the tour to the last minute of our holiday every aspect was excellent. Cecilia made the whole planning experience smooth and seamless, and the tour itself was most excellent. Wow! What an incredible job Nordic Visitor does! We felt so spoilt because everything had been done for us... all we needed to do was drive and have fun. This was an incredible tour and I can't speak highly enough about the slick operation Nordic Visitor runs. Highly, highly recommended!

Highlights of scandinavia & finland cruise, july 2016.

The support that Cicci and her colleagues provided was outstanding. We had a few minor things that needed to be adjusted during our trip and we received immediate and prompt service. All questions were addressed quickly and when changes were required, all our requests were met with a willing attitude. The trip was wonderful and it was nice to know that we had someone to contact should we have encountered any problems.

The Classic Scandinavian Roundtrip, May 2019

Greatly appreciated.

The fact that the travel documents clearly laid out the necessary transfers for trains, boats, planes, etc. was greatly appreciated. When the transfers involved a tricky change, the documents made sure to describe the signs as well as possible to assist. It was also nice to have all of the documents given to us in a single email so access was simple and easy.

Golden route of the nordic countries, may 2018, went very smoothly.

I was very impressed with the efficiency of your staff and how processes that were meant to work actually went very smoothly. We have been traveling for many years and your organization is the least stress creating travel group we have experienced.

Scandinavian Highlights by Car, September 2017

Definitely recommend your company.

I would definitely recommend your company. Very helpful on the phone when booking and arranging extra items such as GPS. Very good English spoken.

A Tale of Four Cities, July 2017

Amazing tour.

This was an amazing tour for us to take as a family holiday (with teenagers) giving us a little insight into each country. Clearly planned to make the most of each city.

Matt, United States

Scandinavian highlights by car, june 2016, went incredibly smoothly.

We had a great experience from the very beginning. Cicci was always quick to respond to emails and answered all our questions prior to us making our final booking. Once we booked all the details (hotels, etc) started coming in and it was really helpful to have the "highlights" booklet to help us plan what we wanted to see and where we should stop each day on our drive. Really everything went incredibly smoothly through out the entire trip! We have no complaints!!

Flights to Scandinavia

There are a handful of direct flights from India to Scandinavia, more specifically to Stockholm (ARN) and Helsinki (HEL). You’ll also easily find connecting flights from several other major cities in Central Europe. Approximate direct flight times are 7 hours from New Delhi.

Below are airlines that offer flights to Scandinavia year-round:

Air India : from New Delhi Finnair : from Helsinki SAS : from Copenhagen and Oslo KLM : from Amsterdam Turkish Airlines : from Istanbul British Airways : from London Lufthansa : from Frankfurt Emirates : from Dubai Qatar Airways : from Doha

We recommend checking with the airlines for flight availability and timetables. Flights are not included in Nordic Visitor packages, but all of our itineraries can be customised with extra nights in Helsinki or Stockholm if you’d like to rest up after a long plane journey.

Different ways you can experience Scandinavia

We have tours for all varieties of travel styles and interests. See our options for exploring Scandinavia below.

Guided Small Groups

Independent cruise, independent train, scandinavian triangle, ideas for holiday packages to scandinavia from india.

Visiting Scandinavia is an enriching experience, with such fascinating cultures and jaw-dropping landscapes for you to discover. There are many reasons why Scandinavia is such a great travel destination for visitors from India.

Firstly, if you are an English speaker, it’s good to know that most locals are fluent in the language. So whether you want to strike up a conversation or need help with directions, you won’t need to worry about any language barrier.

Another convenient thing about Scandinavia tour packages is that getting around is easy. This is thanks to the excellent transport connections and short distances between cities. That’s why we highly recommend the Scandinavian Triangle route – the capitals of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

You can visit Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen in one incredible trip, travelling via train, plane and ferry. Or you might want to take a road trip instead. Spend your days enjoying walking tours, admiring royal palaces, savouring delicious Scandinavian meals, or cycling along pedestrianised streets and bike lanes.

What’s more, Sweden, Norway and Denmark are some of the safest countries in the world. You can expect clean cities, high standards of road safety, and low crime rates too.

But aside from these practical advantages, Scandinavia holidays are a dream because these European cities and rural settings are simply beautiful.

Travel here and you’ll discover a land brimming with gorgeous scenery. Come in the summer to enjoy the midnight sun, wild swimming and al fresco dining. In the winter, expect a festive wonderland and smaller crowds at top attractions. You may even get a chance to spot the northern lights!

As a Northern European tour operator, Nordic Visitor specialises in organising vacations to this beautiful corner of the world. We have many more ideas and travel tips to help you explore Scandinavia your way!

  • First time in the Nordics? See our 7 amazing Scandinavia tours for first-time visitors

Here’s one of our suggestions for a Scandinavia vacation package:

Day 1 - Arrive in Stockholm, Sweden Fly into Stockholm Arlanda Airport and head to your hotel in the city centre. Spend some time walking through Gamla Stan (the Old Town). Enjoy a fika (a Swedish coffee break) with a nice pastry at one of the local cafés in this medieval neighbourhood.

Day 2 - The highlights of Stockholm Spend a full day in the Swedish capital, discovering the city’s attractions and districts. You could join a sightseeing tour to see the best of Stockholm in a day, taking you to must-see spots like the City Hall, Royal Palace and trendy Södermalm quarter.

Or, a ferry ride will whisk you off to the island of Djurgården, home to the Nordic Museum and Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. Meanwhile, a day trip to the Stockholm Archipelago means you could swim in the Baltic Sea and hike through forests.

Day 3 - Fly to Copenhagen, Denmark Head to Stockholm Airport after breakfast and board a plane to Copenhagen. Once in Denmark’s capital, take a walk down the city’s popular Strøget street for a bite to eat, or go check out the fun and games at the old fashioned Tivoli Gardens amusement park.

Day 4 - Discover Copenhagen Soak up the charms of Copenhagen today, either on your own or as part of a guided tour. You might want to visit Rosenborg Castle, the Botanical Garden and Torvehallerne food market.

We also recommend hopping on a boat tour to see Christiansborg Palace, the Royal Danish Opera House and the colourful Christianshavn Canal from the water.

Day 5 - Overnight cruise to Oslo, Norway Ahead of tonight's journey to Oslo, spend the day enjoying more of Copenhagen. Why not make like the bicycle-happy Danes and rent a bike?

You could check out the exquisite Amalienborg Palace, as well as the colourful Nyhavn harbour and the Little Mermaid statue. Later, head to the port for your overnight cruise to Oslo.

Day 6 - Explore Norway’s capital city After your ship arrives early in the morning, the whole day is yours to roam Oslo. Take a walk to the bustling Aker Brygge waterfront area and visit the Akershus Fortress. Or, head to the Bygdøy peninsula to explore historic museums.

If you love art, make sure to take a walk through the delightful Vigeland Sculpture Park. Don’t miss a visit to Oslo City Hall if you want to see where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held.

Day 7 - Scenic train journey to Flåm This morning, go to Oslo Central Station to begin your Norway in a Nutshell® experience – one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Look out the window to see picturesque landscapes and quaint villages like Gol and Geilo.

Change at Myrdal to board the Flåm Railway for one of the top highlights of the entire trip: a 900-metre (half-mile) descent to the picturesque village of Flåm, where you’ll stay for the night.

Day 8 - Norwegian fjord cruise Prepare to witness breathtaking Norwegian scenery today, as you hop on a cruise that takes you through the fjords. You’ll be able to admire the glittering waters, cascading falls and forested mountains of Sognefjord, passing through Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord.

Afterwards, it’s an exciting coach and train ride to Bergen.

Day 9 - Discover Bergen Known as the gateway to the fjords , Bergen is Norway’s charming second city with plenty of its own attractions to uncover. You can visit the medieval houses of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bryggen, and take the funicular up Mount Fløyen for panoramic views over the city and fjords.

There are also plenty of museums, shops and restaurants to check out on your last full day in Scandinavia

Day 10 - Depart from Bergen, Norway Fly back home from Bergen-Flesland Airport, having enjoyed 10 days in beautiful Scandinavia.

What other ideas are there for Scandinavia travel packages from India?

There are so many more places to see in this part of Northern Europe. For example, you could delve deeper into the Nordic region, which is made up of Finland , Iceland , Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

After starting your trip in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, you could choose to take a short ferry ride to Tallinn, Estonia’s capital. Then step aboard a cruise that whisks you to Stockholm. You’ll cross the Baltic Sea overnight to begin your exploration of the Scandinavian countries the following day.

Another alternative is to head deeper into rural Scandinavia. Discover natural gems like the breathtaking Norwegian fjords and mountains. You could journey even further up the west coast towards the Lofoten Islands on a Havila or Hurtigruten cruise , for an exciting Norway tour towards the Arctic Circle.

Like the sound of an odyssey to the far north of Europe? Then we recommend visiting Lapland – a remote region covering parts of Sweden, Finland and Norway. Come in winter for the chance to see the aurora borealis, soak up snowy landscapes, stay in a real ice hotel and meet Santa Claus.

Or hop on a plane to combine Scandinavia and Iceland tours as part of your Nordic experience!

Good to know : Most of our Scandinavia holiday packages aren't set in stone, and there are many possibilities to tailor your plans.

We can modify your tour if you'd prefer to arrive in a different city, spend more free time in one destination than another, or add other towns to your trip. Just ask your Nordic Visitor travel agent for advice.

Interested in Scandinavia group tours from India?

To see the region from a local’s point of view and make some new friends along the way, a guided small group tour of the Scandinavian capitals is a great option! These guided tours run from May to August, so you can enjoy summer travel in Scandinavia

A small group tour offers an enriching experience, allowing you to get the most out of your trip thanks to the expertise of a local guide. What’s more, you’ll be travelling alongside 16 people at most, so the trip is still personal for you.

Prefer a self-guided tour of Scandinavia?

If you would like to discover Scandinavia on your own but prefer not to drive, then an independent tour is the perfect choice. Public transportation in Scandinavia is fast, reliable and punctual, so getting around by train and ferry is a great alternative to driving.

By opting for a train and cruise tour of Scandinavia, you’ll benefit from having your itinerary arrangements made for you but with the freedom to spend your days however you please. Nordic Visitor will book all your accommodation and travel tickets between destinations, and you can add on activities too.

Plus, by booking an independent tour of Scandinavia you’ll still be able to enjoy the usual Nordic Visitor benefits. All our travel packages include access to our 24/7 helpline, a detailed personal itinerary, helpful travel guide and daily breakfast.

  • Travelling on your own? Find out why Scandinavia is perfect for solo travellers

How about a Scandinavia road trip?

You could explore Scandinavia on a self-drive tour , giving you the freedom to stop at lookout points and attractions whenever you want. Get ready for a real adventure, with incredible scenery outside your window to make the journey as unforgettable as the destinations you visit.

The best part? You won’t have to worry about where you’re going or sleeping, because your Nordic Visitor travel consultant has already sorted those local arrangements for you. You’ll also have access to our 24/7 emergency helpline should you need to call us at any point.

You could opt for a circular route between Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo, flying in and out of the Swedish capital, for example. This way, you could soak up the verdant countryside, rural villages, and grand castles and manor houses in this corner of Scandinavia.

All of Nordic Visitor’s Scandinavia self-drive tour packages can be tailored by our local experts with extra nights at select locations or modified driving routes. If you have any particular attractions in mind, just contact us to ask.
