What to Wear on an Overnight Flight: Best Travel Day Outfits (2024)

What to wear on an overnight flight - women's traveling day outfits collage

Our 2014 flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg was a staggering 16+ hours, earning it the title of longest nonstop flight at that time. But now there are nonstop flights from New York to Singapore (18.5 hours), Melbourne to Dallas (17.5 hours) and Dubai to Auckland (17+ hours). Whether you opt for one of these long-haul flights or prefer to book connecting flights, it’s evident that many travel destinations will require hours and hours in the air. What you wear on a long or overnight flight can make or break your trip. In this post I’ll go over what to consider in picking your travel clothes and suggest airplane outfits for women over 50.

You’ve planned your itinerary, booked your flights, and are looking forward to the big trip. But now you’re faced with a long day (or two!) of travel. It’s time to prepare for the flight! Time to load up your airline personal item with comfort items, and activities to keep you occupied. And time to choose what you’ll wear on the plane.

What to consider in your travel day outfit

Whether you’re on a business trip or a bucket-list vacation, the best airport outfits will meet the following criteria:

  • Comfort – The most important thing about your travel clothing should be comfort. Choose clothing that feels good and allows you to move easily. You DO NOT want to be wearing tight or fussy items on a long flight.
  • Practicality – Next up comes practicality. Avoid clothing that’ll stain if turbulence causes a drink to spill. Or clothing that doesn’t breathe and retains odors (synthetic fibers). Natural fibers and dark colors are the best choices.
  • Versatility – Frequent flyers know to expect a wide variety of temperatures. Being prepared to add or remove layers is one of the most important things to remember.
  • Efficiency – If at all possible, choose your traveling clothing from your travel capsule wardrobe . Pick comfortable clothing you’ll wear again at your destination.
  • Appearance – No need to dress up, but you can be comfortable and look good. And who knows? The flight attendant might upgrade you to business class or even first class if you look the part.

Travel day clothing challenges

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can be a life-threatening development on a long plane ride. This happens when blood clots form in the deep veins of the legs when you’ve been sitting for long periods. Though this becomes more of a risk as you get older, all passengers should make sure to get up and walk around on a long haul flight to get the blood circulation going. If you’ve noticed ankle swelling on past trips, or have a history of DVT in the family, be sure to wear a pair of compression socks even on short haul flights.

Airport security lines – unless you have TSA precheck, or similar, you may need to remove jackets, jewelry, belts, shoes, etc., before going through the screening. Make it easy on yourself, but avoiding items that might set off alarms. The best travel outfits don’t have metal zippers, clasps, etc., and are easy to layer up or down.

Airplane bathrooms – Bathrooms on airplanes are challenging on a short flight, but on a long haul flight, the bathrooms may get nasty. Don’t go barefoot and be careful of clothing that might touch the floor when you’re in the washroom.

Dry air – This will not affect your travel outfit, but be aware of the dryness, and stay moisturized. Keep lip balm in your pocket so you can apply it often. Wear glasses instead of contacts to avoid eye irritation.

My key pieces – airplane outfits for women over 50

🌱 NOTE : Before buying anything new, look to see what clothes in your closet will fit the characteristics of a good travel day piece. If you’re still missing comfortable travel clothes, consider shopping your local consignment shop .

Bottoms :pants, leggings, skirts

I always wear comfortable pants, leggings, or yoga pants when I fly. Mostly because I need to stay warm, but also for the practicality a pair of pants offers when you’re dashing through airports or struggling with luggage. The best pants are soft and have an elastic waist. Bonus points for zipped pockets. The Venice travel pants from Athleta (a certified B Corp.) and the dressy sweatpants from Encircled (another company with a commitment to sustainable clothing) fit both qualifications and are my go-to travel day options. If I’m wearing a dress or tunic, I’ll choose Wool& merino wool leggings as a base layer.

Airplane outfits for women over 50 - what to wear on a long flight. Outfit shown - leggings, merino wool tunic, cardigan.

Tops : tees, blouses, dress

A dark-colored top with long sleeves is my choice. Pick one that’s wrinkle resistant and easy-care in case of travel spills and mishaps. I choose a merino wool top or tunic which I know I’ll be able to wear again during the trip. The best travel clothes are made of natural fibers. Merino wool, a natural fabric, is temperature regulating and odor resistant and is a good idea for air travel. Depending on my travel plans I might wear a soft, comfortable travel dress for the flight. Paired with leggings, a dress can be the ideal airplane outfit for women over 50.

Toppers : sweaters, wraps, jackets

Always have layering options on a long overnight flight. Your body temperature drops when you fall asleep, and you’ll want a lightweight sweater or wrap.

I’m loving my lightweight Julahas cape which has taken the place of my much-loved DKNY Cozy. Julahas are handwoven using traditional techniques in the Himalayas. I appreciate their commitment to sustainability and ethical fashion. And I appreciate that they let me offer YOU a 10 Euro discount if you purchase through this link – Julahas.

Some people pack a travel blanket in their carry-on bag, but I prefer to tuck an extra cozy sweater in my underseat bag . I can grab it mid-flight without having to access the overhead bin and drape it over my legs. My current favorites are Athleta’s long cardigan (Pranayama Wrap) and the Minkey Wrap by Diane Kroe. Both can be compressed in a packing cube to take up little space in your bag. A light jacket is also a great addition to stash in your bag.

Slip-on shoes, ballet flats, or other comfortable shoes are ideal for long haul flights. High heels are just not practical for air travel and might result in a fall when you’re navigating the jet bridge with your luggage.

But my #1 packing light strategy is to always wear your heaviest shoes on the flight. So, if I’m off on a hiking holiday, I’ll be wearing hiking boots. Not the best option for long flights, so in that case I’ll include a pair of slippers in my carry-on bag and change into these after I’m settled on the plane. Please don’t go barefoot on a plane, especially if you’re heading to the washroom…

Airplane outfit extras:

  • A pretty scarf can tie your entire outfit together and create a stylish look. Choose one with some substance and you can also use it as a light wrap or sleep mask on the flight.
  • Wear (or pack in your carry-on) a park of warm socks (or fuzzy socks) if you’re hoping to sleep.
  • Don’t forget face masks, a sleeping mask, and other long flight essentials .

What NOT to wear on a long flight

Sometimes the easiest way to choose what to wear is to consider what NOT to wear! Pack these items for your trip, but avoid them on travel days.

Air travel, especially red-eye and overnight flights, can be challenging. But the clothes you’re wearing shouldn’t add to the difficulty of a long travel day. A week or two before your flight, look through your packing list to select practical items that’ll keep you comfortable during the flight. Choose items you enjoy wearing – items that flatter you and that you reach for at home. You can look good, and feel at home, even on a long flight!

This post is part of our  Travel 101  series of posts that will prepare you for your trip. If you’re just beginning to plan, I’d suggest you start with the first in the series –  Pack Light, Travel Easy

At the start of your article I thought 16+ is nothing! I live in Melbourne and the very next sentence was about longer hauls you’ve made 😀 Glad I found your blog – considering putting together a light travel wardrobe for hiking in Japan next year and your sustainable, capsule tips are perfect to add to my ideas board. I can’t believe I travelled to Mexico with the equivalent of a day pack of clothing in the 90s; have drifted away from that a bit in the meantime.

Ha! But aren’t you glad you did that trip in the 90s? Have a great hike in Japan!

12 Outfits to Wear on Your Next Long Flight, According to Frequent Flyers

outfits-for-long-flights-295834-1634834654057-image

The art of crafting an outfit for a long flight is exactly that—an art. Obviously, comfort is priority number one since you could be sitting for 10, maybe even 20 hours, depending on where you're headed. There's also utility to keep in mind. We love to travel with a  crossbody bag or  fanny pack for this exact reason—not to mention packing space and style. Sure, you could wear pajamas (preferably the fancy, feathered kind) to the airport, but with so many designers transitioning to a more comfort-driven aesthetic since the pandemic, there are plenty of fashion-approved alternatives that look elevated and are soft and flexible like your go-to sleepwear.

To ensure that your in-flight experience is on par with your destination, we found 12 outfits sure to have you looking and feeling fresh, despite the 10-plus-hour flight time, and we called on two frequent flyers for their tried-and-true tips.

outfits-for-long-flights-295834-1634762858941-image

You'll Need: Ribbed Top + Matching Ribbed Pants + Fanny Pack

According to Nana Agyemang , the CEO of  EveryStylishGirl and a social media editor who travels long-distance once a month, a comfortable set is a must for in-flight comfort. " Comfort is my top priority [when I fly], so I try to pick clothes that don't restrict me and give me freedom and space to move," Agyemang says.

Even more crucial, though, is a fanny pack, which Agyemang considers to be the ultimate travel companion: "They fit so much in them, and since mine is literally attached to my hip, it's easily accessible."

Rib-Knit Cardigan

You'll Need: Oversize Sweatshirt + Baggy Sweatpants + Sport Sandals

"I try to wear anything without what I call 'pokies,' which are things that can poke you when you're sitting for long periods of time: buttons, snaps, too-tight waistbands, hooks, itchy tags, etc.," says Alyssa Cosca relli , an editor and stylist who traveled multiple times per month pre-pandemic.

Free-Est + Mariner Sweater Set

You'll Need:  Wool Coat + Sweatshirt + Wide-Leg Sweatpants

Let your top layer act as both your style enhancer and an extra carry-on, Coscarelli suggests. According to her, a pocket-rich coat lets you sneak in stuff that doesn't fit in your bag, and it doubles as an extra pillow. Win-win.

Nike + Sportswear Phoenix Sweatshirt

You'll Need: Plissé Top + Plissé Pants + Retro Sneakers

Agyemang is adamant about not wearing jeans or heels on long flights. "They're so restrictive and painful, in my opinion," she says. Try something like this plissé set on  Amaka Hamelijnck  paired with retro New Balance sneakers—Agyemang's go-to brand—instead.

Plisse Oversized Button Up Shirt

You'll Need: Crew-Neck Sweatshirt + Matching Joggers + Oversize Blazer

"Since I prioritize comfort over style with the outfit, I like to accessorize with a cute, trendier bag if I can," Coscarelli says. This red Coperni bag  Megan Adelaide's  wearing is a perfect example of this travel style hack playing out IRL.

Marla Zip Sweatshirt

You'll Need: Quilted Jacket + Leggings + Rain Boots

One big tip: Avoid clothing that bares too much skin. " I always feel better being covered up on planes," Coscarelli says. An easy outfit recipe for doing so is a quilted jacket that can double as a pillow, cozy leggings that aren't too constricting, and chunky rain boots that would otherwise take up a lot of space in your luggage.

Quilted Padded Ripstop Jacket

You'll Need: Hooded Sweatshirt + Yoga Pants + Big Bag + Sporty Sunglasses

Crewneck sweatshirts are great and all, but according to Coscarelli, the real in-flight must-have is a sweatshirt with a hood: "I always need a hood—it doubles as an eye mask when you need to sleep on a long flight. Plus, it's just extra cozy."

Nike + Sportswear Phoenix Fleece Pullover Hoodie

You'll Need: Long-Sleeve Maxi Dress + Trench Coat + Sneakers

Don't be afraid to wear a dress on the plane. In fact, if that's more aligned with your style and comfort zone, you should wear one. If you do, though, pick something that's soft, stretchy, and void of any "pokies."

Mango model in floral maxi dress

You'll Need: Wool Coat + Crewneck Sweater + Short-Sleeve T-Shirt + Baggy Jeans

Jeans aren't your travel-day enemy—tight, constricting jeans are . By opting for a baggier, more worn-in pair, all the aforementioned issues with denim go out the window.

H&M + Cotton T-Shirt

You'll Need: Trench Coat + Claw Clip + Big Tote Bag

"The big claw clip is another travel staple for me," says Agyemang. "I hate having my hair in my face when I travel, and the clip just keeps everything intact. I feel like it actually maintains the volume in my hair when I travel. Therefore, by the time I arrive at my destination and take my hair down, it's still full with body and bounce." Added tip: Bring extras in your XL tote bag in case the little prongs break off.

Urban Outfitters + Mable Jumbo Claw Clip

You'll Need:  Fitted Turtleneck + Quilted Jacket + Track Pants

Since you never know what the in-flight temperature might be on your plane, layering can make or break your travel experience. Freezing for 13 hours sucks, but so does sweating the entire time. " I like to wear layers so that I'm bundled up when I need to be but can peel off the layers if it gets warm," Coscarelli says.

Quilted Bomber Jacket - Women

You'll Need: Oversize T-Shirt + Lightweight Khakis + Compression Socks + Sporty Sneakers

"I'm addicted to compression socks," says Coscarelli, who notes that they've helped her deal with discomfort, swelling, and bad circulation during long flights. *Buys compression socks.*

Best Airplane Outfit Ideas: 12 Chic (And Cozy!) Jetsetter Looks

Even though I like to feel comfortable in my clothing during flights, I don’t want to necessarily throw away style either. Check out a few airplane outfit ideas to feel relaxed but still look chic when traveling!

Best Real People Airplane Outfit Ideas

Table of contents.

Mastering the right outfit to wear on an airplane is no easy feat. You have the plane climate and destination climate to consider, and you want to still look stylish while feeling comfortable.

One of the key ways I come up with flight outfit ideas is by creating an interchangeable capsule wardrobe . Not only does it help with simplified packing, which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase, but I can revolve what I wear on the airplane to sightseeing, nature excursions, and even nights out on the town.

airplane-outfit

A travel capsule wardrobe should be composed of soft, yet packable fabrics that can compress and be organized into packing cubes . And each item should mix and match with each other, be super versatile, so that means I can pack less but still cover all my activities. And, of course, have nice styling details too!

Anyway, recently I felt moved to think about the best airplane outfit ideas due to people-watching at the airport and noting some real-life travel looks that fit well in capsule wardrobes. (They basically rocked!)

Regardless of your style, we’ve recreated these looks that may spark something in you as well:

  • Easy Comfort
  • Glam Globetrotter
  • Easy Breezy
  • Rocker Chic
  • Pretty in Pink

You can also take a peek at my personal airplane outfits by season:

Fall: Comfy Jetsetter Airplane Outfit

Winter: indie edge airplane outfit.

  • Winter: All-Black Chic Airplane Outfit

Spring: Sleek Airplane Outfit

Summer: light and breezy airplane outfit.

Now, check out some of the best airplane travel outfits for each of these looks, along with my own!

Best Airplane Outfits for Women

airplane-outfit

Cardigan |  V-neck |  Leggings  |  Boots  |  Duffel

Easy Comfort Airplane Outfit

This by far is the easiest airport outfit for anyone to duplicate. Easy to wear basics in neutral interchangeable colors plus a few stylish accessories – simple flight fashion!

The perfect formula for an easy to wear comfortable airplane outfit is a classic combo of fitted tee plus leggings. Pair with a cute yet cozy layer such as a long cardigan and shoes that are easy to remove to go through security.

airplane-outfit

Button Up | V Neck | Jeans  |  Boots  |  Earrings  |  Jacket  |  Suitcase

Editor’s Tip Pick for an Airplane Outfit

This look is definitely for the ultra-glam jetsetter. I saw this airport outfit on a woman as she went through security and I couldn’t help but stare in awe at her elegance and designer style. I’m not sure I could pull this off but cheers to you if you can!

airplane-outfit

Dress  |  Scarf  |  Sandals  |  Handbag

Airplane Outfit for a Beach Vacation

One of the loveliest airplane travel outfit ideas—what a great look if you’re headed to a warm destination! I’d definitely carry a cardigan with me in my personal item for the in-flight chills but this is sexy, sophisticated, and a cool take on this season’s neutral – military green.

airplane-outfit

Boots  | Pants  |  Shirt  |  Jacket  |  Bag |  Carry-On

First Class Airplane Outfit

This outfit is definitely more up my alley, at least when traveling to cities. The one issue is the metal on the jacket and boots but they’re easy to take off as you go through the security line. Totally worth a little effort.

airplane-outfit

Trench  |  T Shirt  |  Denim  |  Trainers | Purse

Casual yet Chic Airplane Outfit

Understated elegance, this classic look seems to be a timeless airport outfit in Europe since I saw women of all ages sporting an ensemble such as this. The trench was EVERYWHERE at Heathrow airport in November and rightfully so. It’s an investment piece that’s sure to stand the test of time. Seriously, one of the top outfits to wear on airplane trips!

airplane-outfit

Boots | Sweater  |  Jeans  |  Coat  | Handbag

Feminine Airplane Outfit

I absolutely love this airplane style outfit and can imagine an epic picture in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The neutral wardrobe is offset by the bold statement coat which is a great travel strategy when traveling in the winter. After all, your pictures will mostly be of you in a coat, why not make it a great one?

airplane-outfit

Trousers  |  Top  |  Boots

Boho Cozy Airplane Outfit

This look took me by surprise but I really like the unexpected combination. Easy to wear, comfortable pieces with weather-friendly boots , and a few key boho pieces that exude editorial-worthy confidence. Love it!

My Best Airplane Outfits

Now that we’ve given you some real-people inspiration, check out some of my favorite flying outfit ideas from yore, along with the seasons I wore them!

Wearing my All Saints leather iacket with Delsey Suitcase during my flight to Thailand

Fall can be a tricky time of year. I try to avoid going full-on winter and in this case, I was traveling to Thailand during October, so knew I’d shed things like scarves for an airy tank top upon landing.

I love this look because it’s clean and easy to put together. The pants have a give and the coat is fitted but I can move my elbows and arms with ease.  A scarf is particularly topical for fall because when there’s a slight chill it instantly warms me up.

airplane-outfit

My flight from US to England with All Saints leather jacket , | Ankle Boots ( similar ),  Delsey suitcase and Rebecca Minkoff backpack

While I tend to wear simple colors, I still like a bit of rock n’ roll edge to my look every so often!

For this airplane outfit, I was traveling during the wintertime from the US to England and wanted some warmth, so I wore a leather jacket and layered a shirt underneath that. I then put on my fave jeans and then slid in some funky low-heeled ankle boots. I was comfy and cozy I tell you!

airplane-outfit

Blouse | Spanx Leggings | Tory Burch Flats | Longchamp Tote | Delsey Suitcase

This beauty is my new fave airplane outfit that’s awesome for spring (or early fall)!

The look is super stylish but seriously comfortable. I prefer movement and stretch in my pants when I fly and these Spanx faux leather leggings have give in the elastic waistband and knee area. They’re kinda my go-to’s now!

airplane-outfit

Spanx Moto Leggings | Ankle Boots ( similar ) | Delsey Suitcase | Nomad Lane Bento Bag

Good flight shoes are a must so I seek out flexible flats, comfy boots,  or slip-ons that don’t pinch my feet and can be easily removed through security. These Tory Burch Minnie flats were a new buy and so surprisingly comfy and I walked from terminal to terminal with no problems!

Check out reviews for both the Tory Burch Minnie flats and the Spanx faux leather leggings !

Wearing Spanx leggings and black ankle boots as my favorite airplane outfit

Editor’s Winter Favorite: All-Black Chic Airplane Outfit

This is by far, my FAVORITE and best outfit for airplane travel during the winter! It’s warm and layered, so I can take things off/on when needed, and I still feel fashionable.

I was actually going from cold to warm weather, so I wore my heaviest items on the plane and changed once I arrived at my destination of Bonaire. And when I say “heavy” that refers to my coat and boots.

The secret to a capsule wardrobe is to include packable items. My coat is Anatomie, it’s well made and can compress down fairly well, and my boots were a little bulkier but I always look for ones that are as lightweight as possible. And these ones are waterproof so it can handle the elements and still look cute!

Feel free to check out the best waterproof ankle boots for more inspiration!

airplane-outfit

Jacket (similar) | Top (similar) |  Pants (similar) | Slip-ons (similar) | Messenger Bag

I wore this when I hit Europe in the summertime and it was a durable, adorable ensemble I remember fondly!

For me, it’s important to have a comfy flight outfit, and I usually re-wear the same outfit for travel days thereafter, whether I’m flying or taking a train. If I’ve really nailed down an outfit that works for me, then it’s a keeper!

I swear by using lightweight pants and jacket   . It has lightweight fabrics that don’t retain moisture so I feel airy in hot climates. For a top, the sleeveless blouse comes with me for every summer trip! It’s comfortable and breathable, and I can layer it with a cardigan or light jacket if need be.

Again, shoes need to feel right, on or off a flight, and I discovered these Skechers Mary Jane slip-ons ( which are now sold out but here’s a similar one ) because readers raved about them for years! Their memory foam insole means my feet feel cushioned all the time!

More of My Airplane Outfits

I hope you found these cute airplane outfits motivating to begin piecing together your own personal capsule wardrobe that can move from “up in the air” to “on the ground!”

airplane-outfit

Aside from the wardrobe choices above, what stood out above all was that all these travelers had freshly styled hair and makeup, which really adds the finishing touch to even the most casual of airport ensembles. Don’t forget that a good blow dry and mascara goes a long way!

I love these travel outfit ideas! I want to be comfy when I travel, but I also want to look cute and not lazy or sloppy. These outfit ideas are just what I need to help me put together the perfect travel outfit for myself!

Diana Janisbel

Wait! Thanks so much for sharing these outfit ideas, it feels so easy to recreate when you have it with pictures like this. I travel a lot and my outfits can be hit or miss haha

Heidi Quan

Love these polished yet comfy outfit suggestions. So key to be comfortable yet still stylish even when traveling on those long haul flights. Love them all.

Cathleen

Most of my flights are between the US and Southeast Asia – so I’m usually just focused on how to be as comfortable as possible for 30+ hours. I love Vuori joggers (so soft!!) and a tank top for if I get hot with a jacket for if I get cold. I do need to step up my game when I fly in the States so I appreciate all the stylish ideas!

tammi

So many cute options. Thank you for sharing both the suggestions as well as some personal examples. It’s always fun to get new ideas of combinations that will look cute and travel well.

Michele Smith

Luv this article! I have followed travel fashion girl for several years. I found a video on U-tube on how to pack for 10-days in Europe using a carry-on bag. Guess what? It worked. Have been using capsule wardrobe concept ever since. I use solid hair products at home too. Always great to see the latest thoughts on fashion forward looks.

Amy Hanley

This is so helpful! I am very impressed by those that can wear upscale, polished blazers, jeans and dresses when traveling. I appreciate that you have practical but stylish options for us leggings and cardigan sweater gals! Wish the Skechers slip ones were still in stock.

Amy Fowler

Love wearing my go-to and heavier items on the plane – jean jacket, white tennies for spring/summer, and Chelsea boots for fall/winter. Always bring a layering piece in my personal bag, and tie a scarf on my personal bag too. The temp always seems to fluctuate between boarding and in flight, so it’s nice to have options.

Avagail

My go-to outfit is leggings and a merino wool t-shirt – super casual, but I want to step up my airport outfits so this post was super helpful with ideas!

Jill

I love all of these outfits! To me, the airport is one of the best things about travel and I look forward seeing, walking, exploring as much of it as I can. Therefore, the most important part of the travel outfit are the comfortable shoes!

Ellen

I’m all about comfort on an airplane. These suggestions are great!

Taking my first International trip in a few months. I’ve never taken a night flight and didn’t know what to wear since we arrive in the morning and will be on the go right away! These choices are all so helpful! Now to only decide, I love them all!

Darcy Hartman

I recently bought a couple of pairs of Old Navy high waisted power soft wide leg pants in navy and in black. These have been perfect for travel. Super comfy on the plane, and they look nice enough for conferences. I love all your looks here!

Christine Ince

So many great tips! I’ve used your packing lists to successful pack for a two week Italy vacation in a carryon. I was able to put together plenty of fashionable interchangeable outfits and I’m so grateful that I packed light! My red eye travel outfit was perfect and included layers. A tank, lightweight linen tee, scarf that doubled as a blanket, and a pair of athleta Brooklyn heights joggers. Their joggers and trousers are perfect for flying.

Ann Rumberger

Love seeing all these options! Such variety for any style of airline travel and any type of style. Great inspiration.

Angela Young

Thanks for this article! Having had flight cancellations where I ended up in the same clothes for a couple days, I always think about what outfit would serve me well – versatile, comfortable, and will look okay a bit mussed or wrinkled… These outfits look chic and fit my style, too. Thank you!

Bryanna

Thank you for this article, super helpful and I completely agree! More and more I’m learning about capsule wardrobes and how important they are!

Patricia Hellrung

Great ideas for travel outfits…comfort and style. Using a lot of these ideas for my Fall European trip! Appreciate all the great tips

Karen Clements

I love all of these ideas for outfits to wear when flying on a plane. Two of my favorite pairs of pants to wear for flying are a pair of Quince linen pants which I purchased upon recommendations from readers of Travel Fashion Girl and also the Eddie Bauer Departure pants. I get so may great ideas for clothing and what to pack, etc. from these blogs.

Caryn Goode

I love all these options. I struggle with choosing an airport outfit with pieces I can wear again. Thank you!

Jill Hauwiller

Love all these great options!

Georgia Small

I’ve learned so many great tips from TFG as well as the TFG Facebook group. Thanks so much for all that you do.

Lynne

Great ideas. I always layer because I am always hot, but then it can get cold in the airport or plane!

Lynn Pike

What to wear on the plane, especially a long haul vacation, is always a challenge. Stylish yet comfortable, easy to wear yet not sloppy, arriving at your destination not looking like you have spent hours in the plane. Loved the outfits by season! This site never disappoints! What a gem 💎 ✨️!

Lisa Parker

I love all of these, especially the understated elegance. You have such beautiful taste and have inspired me, not only with my travel wardrobe, but also in my everyday wardrobe!

Beth Theisen

I love this blog post and go back to it often depending on where I am going. You make planning for travel so much fun, and a different sort of adventure for certain. I also love spotting fellow TFG travelers by their airplane outfits as well.

Tammy

Love these ideas!! I am traveling out of the country for the first time next month and, thanks to TFG, I have put together my perfect outfit! I will be comfortable and well put together. Ordering the last piece today (also a TFG recommendation). Love this site!!

Gwen

Love these ideas. Always looking for ways to be comfortable flying, while also looking stylish.

Melissa A (Missie) Berreth

What fantastic ideas! I always struggle the most with plane outfits because I want comfort but don’t want to look sloppy or old! Thank you for doing all the legwork for us!

Love these ideas! Thank you for sharing.

Kim Hoffman

It’s always a challenge finding items that travel well, are comfortable, and leaving you looking “pulled together” after a flight. These are great ideas – thanks!

Marianne Livengood

Loved all of your airplane outfits. Going to South Africa and looking for comfy outfits for 15 hour flight. Great ideas. Thanks.

Cathleen Huckaby

You ROCK! This ‘1-stop’ travel trove of wisdom, REAL-life help, and tips is a God-send! I’ve ordered many items you & other readers recommend (espec. on major holidays/Black Fri. sales). As a woman on a budget it’s a bit tough w/ all the expenSive sites (Nordstroms, JC Crew) so I appreciate you adding “Quince” as they seem to cut out the middleman/advertising. As the founder of a charity every dollar counts, thus a $340 trench coat is out, yet on Quince it’s much much less (& they have free returns!) I just ordered my 1st item from Quince & looking forward to wearing it as you highly recommended it! Thanks for ALL you do, Cathleen (RN)

Michelle

Love all the outfits! Is there an updated plus size article for the over age 60 group.

Linh Chin-Lai

I have my favorite airplane outfit: long pants (lightweight for summer, heavier for winter), sleeveless top, cardigan, tennis shoes with low rise socks.

Carol Askew

This is a post that I keep coming back to again and again every time I travel. I have recommended this blog and Facebook group to many of my friends. I consider the Facebook group to be the single most helpful group that I am in. Of course I do live and love to travel lol.

Saby Herrera

I’m always looking for airport outfit ideas! Love all the different options and styles. Thanks for sharing!

Nancy Jo Tschida

I love the variety of options too as well as the total look that includes everything to create the outfits even lipstick.

Lauren Andrea Morgan

I love this post. Especially the black and blue with leather jacket. I love options for women of all ages and sizes. I can never color coordinate, so I appreciate the ideas!!

Nancy Y Buchanan

I honestly think the “airplane” outfit is the hardest one of all – LOL!! Since I’m west coast based all my flights to Europe are 10+ hours so… a VERY long day of travel! The Easy Comfort” outfit is definitely my style – cute, comfortable and practical since it features two bulky and hard to pack wardrobe items – a long cardigan and boots! A variation of this look is going to be my choice when traveling to London and Croatia next spring!

Ilene Smith

Always love your ideas! I find that my travel outfits change based on where I’m going and what I’m doing once I arrive. But often some iteration of what you’re showing.

Sinéad Shah

I travel in Athleta Brooklyn pants that I found because of this site. They dress up or down and are super comfortable and also can be washed in the shower and dry overnight. Awesome travel staple

Teri Naiser

While I have yet to do a carry-on-only trip, I’ve learned so many valuable tips from your site! I now have the best travel pants and a wardrobe capsule that mixes and matches beautifully! Thanks for all you do!

Tammy Fellows

All of these are great options, thank you! Soooo much nicer looking and just as comfy as some of the traveling outfits I see at my job as a flight attendant! Love your ideas!

Tobi-Velicia

I love these outfit options! I usually wear a short DVF wrap dress with leggings and shoes that are easy to slip on and off for travel. But I definitely want to try a few of these amazing looks.

Sherri Killam

I have followed Travel Fashion Girl for some time and I cannot even tell you how many times I have read about the best shoes for travel and the best bags (handbags, backpacks) that are secure and stylish. It is because of you that I discovered Travelon. This post about what to wear on the plane with accompanying photos really hits home. We are traveling to Europe at the end of this week and I had vacillated between wearing stretchy Ponte pants that unfortunately have not pockets and blue jeans. After reading some posts on Facebook and seeing these pictures (and knowing how much I rely on pockets), the jeans have won out. Plus, not having to pack them will reduce the weight in my suitcase. Please know that even those of us who are not very chatty usually are reading and enjoying TFG and are very thankful for this resource. May all your journeys be happy ones.

Colleen Hackett

I’ve been following Travel Fashion Girl for some time and love all the tips and real life scenarios. I’m in my 60’s and am mostly into being comfortable with some fashion thrown in. I love that the styles shown are for the younger women all the way up to us traveling seniors! I can always find something here that works for me.

Cheryl Finley

I bought the tee and joggers from Sexy Modest Boutique. I have traveled in them for the past year. They are comfortable, breathable, and I can create different looks with jackets, shoes, scarves, etc…I have black in both pieces. When worn together it looks like a jumpsuit which I like, but I also use each piece with my other clothing to create outfits, so they are part of my capsule. I just recently traveled to Europe and was very comfortable on the long flights (felt like pjs).

Gwen Pinkston

I’ve been looking at these. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on wearing for travel.

Beth Williams

I love this post! So informative and the photos make such a difference in seeing how it all works together.

Liz

I tend to wear long dresses on flights. That way my legs are covered if it’s cold but also, I’m not too hot when I get off the plane. My go to has Spaghetti straps that I paid with a cardigan or jean jacket. That is the ultimate in comfort for me!

Christine Butkiewicz

I’ve been following Traveling Fashion Girl for the past year. Joined the group after my husband surprised me with a trip to Italy. Love to travel but struggle with overpacking and never seeming to be able to put together an outfit. Your blog has been soooo helpful and I’ve learned so much! Thank you for all the interesting information and truly helpful advice!!! Love it!

Zoe Green

I love everything about Travel Fashion Girl! The tips on packing and clothing are spot on. So glad to have found you. Keep traveling!

Loredana Ragone

Your blogs and fb group have helped me be a better Travel Fashion Girl, thank you so much for your advice and suggestions! I love this community.

Sarah Dorn

I wear a lounge set from Duluth Trading Co. on long-haul flights. It’s a tank top with a built-in bra, it’s very comfortable! It’s a monochromatic look so it looks chic.

Cindy Merrill

Such cute outfits! I am inspired to get some new travel outfits!

Jennifer Bennett

I’m definitely an easy comfort kind of traveler, haha. My go-to’s are either Fabletics leggings or Anatomie pants (always stretch!) with 2-3 layers on top, typically a tank or tee with a long sleeve shirt or sweater over and optional scarf because I am always cold on the plane but hot in the airport. I’m an options girl for sure! I do try to style up with my tops though so I look put together vs frumpy.

Jane Bitsicas

So many good ideas. I love having a pulled together travel look, rather than just any old sweats and t-shirts that I see so much of. That way I can hit the ground running when I arrive and not have to change.

Kathleen Weissenberger

I have read and re-read so many of the blog posts. I have purchased a few items from the FB group and the TFG favorites…and I had considered myself a well seasoned frequent travel expert!

Anel Muterspaugh

The easy comfort type is the way to go for me. I mostly travel with kids si ability to be comfortable is key. Joggers, loose T-shirt, cardigan or jacket and running shoes.

Peggy Workman

Every year I fly at least once to Europe and once to Hawaii from KY. At 72, I’ve discovered that my favorite flying outfit is is midi length sleeveless black jersey dress with knee length slits on both side seams. Flexible enough to wear as a jumper, or wear it with a scarf, add a sweater, or a jacket, or a pull over sweater. It’s easier to use the toilet on an airplane but pulling something up then pulling down pants and attempting to keep them off the bathroom floor.

Ronnell Crowder

Wish more of the travel clothes came in tall.

Suzie

Thank you for elevating the idea of what’s appropriate for travel. With so many options, it’s possible to be comfortable and pulled together. It always amazes me to see what fellow travelers wear to board an airplane….and not usually in a good way 😞 Those who take the time to look nice stand out in a positive way, and that’s what I aspire to. So grateful for all of the resources here!!

GG

As someone who wears skirts 300 days of the year, I always have trouble with my airplane outfit- how to style pants?! Thanks for the inspiration!

Rose Trasatti

Love these tips plus all the others you post!

Nikki

Where is that chunky silver necklace from?

Alex

Hi Nikki, it’s from By Aris. I loooooooove their metal jewelry so much!!!! And they evenmade this custom necklace for me and named it after me. 😊 The “Alexandra” necklace: https://byaris.com/products/alexandra-necklace/

Dianne Wendling

Love your blog and all the Facebook group ideas and recommendations!!

Tiffany Cline

Great suggestions. After many years I have finally come up with my go to airport outfit. Long sleeve or short sleeve stripe tee, cardigan or blazer, black comfy pants and loafers with a scarf!

Catherine Lewis

Hello – Thank you! Trying to figure out exactly which long grey cardigan that is in first pic…the Amazon link shows several.

Hi Catherine, I have had a look for you but unfortunately it looks like this cardigan is sold out.

We do have more options on this post which you might like: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-cardigans-for-women/

Elaine

I am flying Tuesday night to Sweden for a 2 week road trip. Your article helped me choose my “flying” outfit from my Classic 12 piece capsule. Thanks to you and all your readers for taking the anxiety out of packing for my first trip since before Covid.

Cary

Love the Casual and Chic look featured above. Comfort with a pop of color!

Susan

Thank you for giving me inspiration for my airplane outfit. I have been working on it for the past month or so . . . I like to be stylish, yet comfortable. Since it will be a long 36 hours of flying/travel time, I will be changing to some comfy wide leg pants for the overnight leg, but plan on being more stylish for the first part wearing my EB black Ponte pants, Departure 2.0 long sleeve white shirt, and jean jacket. Still deciding on which shoes to wear!

Christina

Jeans are not the best thing to wear on a plane. There are lots of comfy trousers with flexibility and look a heck of a lot better. Open toes is a no-no, loafers or boots better choice for footwear. Otherwise, thanks for posting cute travel outfits for all of us!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us Christina! ?

Carol Anne Gartland

I love all of these ideas. I do not know if I am just old-school or still believe in fairytales, but I always try and be comfortable while chic. Using my Delsey Chatelet bag ( recommended by TFG) and a faux leather backpack, I keep thinking I will be invited to First Class for a glass of champagne. lol

M

I found scarves to be a TSA tag. They ask me to remove, so they know you’re not carrying something around your neck. Even a bandanna.

Thank you for sharing your travel experiences with us!

Natalie

I like the boots in the Editor’s Tip Pick for an Airplane Outfit. They are black with buckles. Can you send the exact link to find these?

Hi Natalie, I am sorry about this but unfortunately the boots featured were the Ugg Simmens boots which have recently become unavailable. They are similar in style to the Ugg Wilde boots featured here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-waterproof-boots/ We are looking to update many of our articles so thank you for bring this to our attention. I am sorry we could not have been of more help ?

Thank you for the other options. Going on an Alaskan cruise and I was told to have waterproof shoes due to the fact it rains a lot.

Hi Natalie, so pleased I was able to help! ? If you need any more tips to help with packing for your cruise, we also have this article: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-alaska-cruise-in-august/ Have an amazing time! ?

Mary

Do have any suggestions/articles for international (long haul flights) fashion?

Hi Mary, have a look at our guide for what to wear on a flight for some ideas: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-on-a-plane/ I would also highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post your question there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. Mrs C

I love sleeveless, soft cotton midi dresses with a cardigan or blazer and sneakers. We fly to Italy often, so I like to look decent. I learned my lesson about wide leg pants: They touch the floor when using the bathroom! For that reason, when wearing pants, it’s best to wear skinnies or leggings.

Hi there, thank you for sharing your go-to travel outfit with us, sounds comfortable and stylish!!! Happy travels ?

Bessie Brown Lewis

Thanks for that nugget about the wide leg pants. Will save them for a night out for our trip.

Grace Crussiah

Agree about wide leg pants. Slim or regular leg pants work for flights too.

Patti

Loved the article, always looking for ways to add a little style to my airplane standbys. Whose says you can’t look good and fly?

alex

Exactly 😉 Thanks Patti!

Jolie Johnsen

Thank you for the wardrobe inspo. The air travel outfit ideas are brilliant!

Dot Higgins

I always travel in quality knits that will keep their shape. The picture at the top of the article looked very unrealistic. If I was wearing that tucked-in cloth blouse, I’d be a wrinkled, sloppy, uncomfortable mess at the end of a 7+ hour flight. Short hops are one thing, but I’ve yet to see someone look so fresh after a trans-continental flight.

Great point Dot! These outfits are only based on people I saw in London so I can’t really be sure of how long they were traveling. Thanks for the feedback!

Linda Goodfellow

Nice!! I loved every one of these outfits.

Thanks Linda!

Julia K

love the military green outfit! so chic and looks comfy..

alex

Awesome! Glad you found one you like!

Elizabeth Jones

My favourite! I always wear a dress…mid calf next time. Cardi, trench, rope low wedge sandals. Soo comfy, smart for any age! Dress is always loose fitting.

Wendy

Any suggestion on where to get the striped wide-leg pants? The link isn’t working.

Hi Wendy! How about these? http://bit.ly/22T8DMk

Claire Sparks

Love the pictures of you at St. Pancras Station in London. Love all the outfits but especially the pink ensemble for Paris.

Thank you Claire! 🥰

Kathy Peters

Can’t wait to get ready and travel light for my upcoming trip to Croatia. Thank you for all the great tips!

Kate

I’m definitely a cross between easy comfort, french and rocker chic when I travel. Comfort if key, but I would prefer not to look like a slob.

There are so many comfortable clothes available, no need to go to the airport in sweats 😉

Rhonda

Since I don’t check luggage, my first rule is to wear the heaviest clothes. So for my flight from US to Europe in a few weeks, that means jeans, a sweater, and boots. I wish I could wear yoga pants to facilitate sleeping on the overnight flight!

Why not carry your yoga pants in your carryon and change out of your jeans before you board the flight? Or wear leggings under your jeans and then remove them? 😉

Irene

I’m traveling from Alaska to Spain and I would shoot myself if i had to travel in tight uncomfortable, deep vein thrombosis inducing jeans 🙂 Pack lighter and leave your jeans in the carryon. Wear leggings on the plane. The difference in weight is minimal.

Hi Irene, do you dive in Alaska? I ask because of your email 🙂 I love scuba diving so that sounds incredible!

Sandy

Some lovely outfits esp like the pink. But, I wonder how did they manage , fine on the way out, but what about when they arrived….have you seen how small the plane cubicles are, and how long the impatient queues on board can be when travelling ‘cattle class’?

With the exception of the Glam Globetrotter they all seemed pretty easy to get in and out of. They’re all mostly just a nicer version of jeans and tee 😉

Theresa

I love to ear comfortable but classy outfit in the plane. I have scored some upgrades a. Because I asked nicely and b. Because I looked like I was a perfect fit for Business or First Class. White London shirt and blazer or trench. Black pants and either nice loafers or boots. A scarf or pashmina. Fresh make up and hair coiffed.

Sounds like the perfect first class look!

Sara

LOVE the ideas! The military green outfit is tres chic and I can’t get over that pink coat. <3

-Sara http://www.coveritgirl.blogspot.com

Thanks Sara!

Michelle

I’m the Easy Comfort type, although I really enjoy being all dressed up (especially for short trips). But on a flight, especially a longer one, I prefer to be comfortable…

It would be nice to travel in glamorous outfits like celebrities but how do they deal with the lack of comfort?

Zoe

Maybe they change into pyjamas for the actual flight?! Not to mention the use of stylists before getting to the arrivals hall of the airport!

My recent autumn/winter travelling outfit of choice is a grey marl jersey dress with 3/4 length sleeves, which I wear with thermal tights (from Marks & Spencer’s) and a merino wool cardigan or sweater. I don’t bother with many accessories when travelling, apart from a scarf – and obviously a coat and gloves/hat if I’m outdoors! This outfit has really worked well for me, even on an uncomfortable overnight long haul flight that was delayed by 3 hours!

Most of the outfits looked pretty comfortable…with the exception of the “Glam Globetrotter” outfit that is! The jewelry, hair, and makeup made the biggest difference from casual to chic. Sounds like we have a similar winter travel outfit – comfortable dress plus tights!

Solange

Wish I could find the ARMY Green Dress for the Beach Vacation. It’s EXACTLY what I’ve been lookn for.

A Travel Editor's Best Travel Outfits for Long Flights

@sophiemiura / Instagram

There's a certain art to building the perfect travel outfit. Last year, I spent 203 hours on airplanes jetting from New York to Tahiti, Australia, Finland, Japan, and more as part of my job as an editor and travel writer. When I'm not reviewing new hotels and airlines for work, I try to squeeze in the odd trip to explore under-the-radar vacation spots at my own pace. So trust me when I say, I've had enough practice refining the best travel outfits for long flights.

I have two rules when it comes to dressing for a long-haul flight : It has to be comfortable and something I wouldn't mind being seen in if I bumped into a coworker. With that in mind, I think I've found the best travel outfit formula. Here are the exact items I mix and match on a flight, depending on my mood and the destination. Every item ticks the boxes: They're incredibly well made, stretch, don't rub, are casually stylish, and stand up to the rigors of flight after flight.

Keep scrolling for my must-have travel and airport outfit essentials—accessories included—for the next time you take to the skies.

Holdall Duffle

This is my go-to carry-on for weekend trips. I love the leather straps, waterproof material, and the fact that I'm never asked to check it in if the overhead bins are full. Made out of 14 upcycled plastic water bottles and natural cotton, it gets bonus points for being eco-friendly too.

Durable Carry-On

A recent trip to L.A. revealed that the entire MyDomaine team swears by Away luggage . The carry-on features a hidden laundry bag, not to mention, the hard shell means I never think twice about bringing a bottle of wine back from vacation.

Enclosed Lace-Up Shoes

I prefer to wear these Thousand Fell sneakers if I'm traveling for work and want to look a bit more polished. Lace-up sneakers are a must at airports: I can loosen the laces when my feet swell midair and don't feel gross in socks when I have to take them off to pass through security.

Leather Jacket

I always travel with a leather jacket because it makes my outfit look cool and styled, even if I'm wearing sneakers and leggings. This jacket by Topshop has been on my wishlist for months.

Loose-Fitting Top

We all love Madewell's relaxed basics for traveling. This scoop-neck T-shirt is loose and layers well with a leather jacket and cardigan. The price tag might sound steep for a basic tee but the supersoft Peruvian Pima cotton is worth the splurge.

No-Frills Leggings

These shape-sculpting leggings are my travelwear go-to. They are comfy, silky soft, and have a flattering high waist. Best of all, the fabric is quick-drying, which comes in handy when you spill a drink due to unexpected turbulence—or maybe just clumsiness.

Black Jeans

I prefer to wear leggings, but if I'm lucky enough to be flying in business class, I try to look a bit more presentable. Topshop's Jamie jeans are the only ones I wear on a flight. They have so much stretch and a high waistband that's comfortable even if I feel bloated midair.

Quality Headphones

Screaming babies, loud talkers, and a plane's white noise are no match for these B&O Play over-ear headphones. Not only do they muffle noisy passengers and vessels so that I can enjoy my in-flight entertainment in peace, but they look super stylish while doing so. I don't fly without them.

Opt for noise-cancelling headphones to ensure a stress-free flight.

Parachute's Merino Travel Kit makes coach feel like first class. I find the warm blanket makes it easier to get quality sleep on a flight and sometimes wrap it around myself like a scarf when the cabin is cold. Plus, it comes in a zip-up wool bag that is the perfect travel pillowcase.

Waterproof Tote

I've had this Longchamp tote for over five years, and it's lasted countless flights and adventures. The waterproof outer casing means that the contents are protected from any spills, and it folds up into a flat package to be stored in my luggage when I arrive at the destination.

Personal Handbag

This is the perfect crossbody bag for travel: It's small, but still fits a phone and passport, zips up for safety, is made from durable leather, and can be monogrammed so you'll never mix it up with a stranger's bag.

What to Wear on an Overnight Flight: My Style Favorites

overnight travel outfit

My flight rule to what to wear on an overnight flight is this: it’s got to be comfortable and stylish. After all when we look good, we exude confidence, we’re treated better and we feel better don’t we? It may not get you an upgrade but you never know who you might meet!

Being comfortable and warm is super important in a chilly plane cabin especially an overnight flight. Chances are you’re going to try and catch some zzzz’s so let’s keep it cosy too.

What to Wear on an Overnight Flight

Here’s what I’d wear on an overnight flight either in spring or summer.  Basically I’ll pair a chic sneaker, a sleek pair of joggers with a comfortable stylish stretchy top. Depending on my destination I’ll add a couple of layers for comfort (see below)

Traveling on from your overnight flight?  Here’s what to pack for that longer European stay-cation.

Spring & Summer Flights

  • START with a stretchy long sleeved top in a neutral or dark color.
  • PAIR with a smart pair of joggers in a neutral contrasting stretchy material.
  • LAYER a light sweatshirt over your top
  • ADD a soft down packable vest/gilet to keep you warm while you sleep
  • NEXT add a comfortable pair of athletic shoes.  S mart wool liners to keep feet warm.
  • KEEP drafts out by wrapping a wool blend poncho or scarf around your neck
  • If it’s warm when you arrive, stuff your poncho wrap and vest in your carryon
  • If it’s cool drape your wrap over your lightweight long sleeve tee
  • If it’s chilly, put your packable down jacket on wrapping your poncho around your neck as a scarf.

Fall & Winter Flights

During cool seasons or when traveling to a colder climate, keep your outfit similar but add extra light layers. Here’s what I’ll wear during fall and winter.

Heading to the UK or Europe? Find out how to keep warm once you arrive.

  • PULL on a smart pair of jogger pants in a neutral warm material. Lined is even better.
  • PAIR with a long sleeved top with stretch. Choose neutral or a contrasting dark color.
  • KEEP warm with a natural fiber wool or cashmere sweater. A turtleneck will keep drafts away!
  • ADD a waterproof or lined boot that’s easy to slip on and off. Don’t forget Smartwool liners to keep your feet warm.
  • FOLD your packable down jacket into its bag to use as a pillow or to keep warm during the flight.
  • If it’s warm enough when you arrive, stuff your coat in your carryon
  • If it’s chilly, put on your packable down jacket and the hat and gloves you packed!

There you go! You’ll be stylish, warm and comfortable.  For more of  my favorite resources go here.

Ready to make your plans? Why not take a peek and see what’s available at your destination. Comfort is my mantra for hotels too!

This bag should house all of your essentials and still level up your airport outfit. Keep reading for some of the best travel and airport outfit ideas your next trip.

J. Crew Cashmere-Wool Travel Wrap

Cashmere-Wool Travel Wrap

Let's be honest, you can't always count on the airline's blankets to keep you warm, and some even leave annoying fluff behind. Stay warm and stylish with your own wearable blanket by way of this travel necessity from J. Crew that comes in eight different colors.

Dr. Scholl's Time Off Platform Sneakers

Time Off Platform Sneakers

Celebrated for their consciously comfortable footwear, these sneakers from Dr. Scholl's are tricked out with tons of features for all-day comfort. Inside, anatomical cushioning and arch support keep you covered while a lightweight, anti-slip platform sole protects on the outside. This minimalist sneaker looks just as good with a matching suit as it does a low-key sweat set.

May I tell you I got this set last year? I wore it in a photo shoot for O Quarterly and never looked back...” Why not pair it with the coordinating wide-leg pants for a full sweatsuit?

32º DEGREES Lightweight Recycled Poly-Fill Shirt Jacket

Lightweight Recycled Poly-Fill Shirt Jacket

Sometimes a full on coat is not needed for travel, but you can never be quite sure of the weather. That's why a a little packable shacket—part shirt, part jacket—comes in. In black, olive green, or dark blue, the jacket will be your go-to for travel. Keep in mind, it runs slightly big in order to allow for comfortable layering of hoodies or sweaters underneath. There's a reason why Oprah tapped it on her Favorite Things list .

Dr. Motion Compression Socks with Enhanced Cushioning (3 Pack)

Compression Socks with Enhanced Cushioning (3 Pack)

Compression socks are always a good ideal for traveling. We recommend these styles from Dr. Motion that offer graduated compression of 8 to 15 mmHg while providing arch support. Unlike other socks that can feel scratchy or clammy, these are soft, moisture-wicking, and subtly cushioned.

Asutra Silk Eye Mask & Pillow

Silk Eye Mask & Pillow

Oprah chose this eye mask for her 2023 Favorite Things list. "Sleeping with a mask is life-changing—I cannot tell you how much the quality of my sleep has improved," she said. "This weighted 100 percent silk one stays down and doesn’t let even a pinch of light in.” Co-owned by superstar Venus Williams, Asustra produces eye pillows that are filled with lavender and flax. Whether you want to meditate or snooze during your flight, this adjustable mask will definitely relax you.

Why Choose PACT for Travel Fashion?

Pact is committed to sustainability, using organic cotton in its clothing. Organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, making it a more environmentally friendly choice compared to conventional cotton.

Additionally, organic cotton is softer and more breathable, making it ideal for travel, especially on long flights.

Pact’s designs are not only eco-friendly but also stylish and versatile, making them perfect for the fashion-conscious traveler.

Key Pieces for an Overnight Flight

  • Leggings or loose-fitting pants : Organic cotton leggings or pants are a must-have for overnight travel. They provide flexibility and comfort, and can be paired with a sweater or oversized shirt for that effortless chic look.
  • Jumpsuit : For those who prefer a more streamlined look, Pact’s Cool Stretch jumpsuit is a stylish and comfortable option. It’s easy to dress up or down with accessories and provides plenty of freedom of movement.
  • Cozy Sweater or Hoodie : It can get chilly on a plane. Bring something easy to take on and off.

Accessories and Footwear

  • Shoes : Choose comfortable slip-on sneakers or flats made from sustainable materials for easy airport security checks and long walks through terminals.
  • Bag : Opt for an eco-friendly tote or backpack to carry your essentials. Look for bags made from recycled materials or sustainable fabrics.
  • Jewelry : Keep it minimal with lightweight, versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched with multiple outfits .

Packing Tips

  • Roll Clothing : Rolling your clothing instead of folding it can help maximize space in your luggage and minimize wrinkles.
  • Layering : Pack versatile pieces that can be layered for warmth. A cardigan or jacket can double as a pillow or blanket during the flight.
  • Accessories : Choose accessories that can be mixed and matched with multiple outfits to create different looks with fewer items.

What To Wear On An Overnight Flight – Conclusion

When it comes to overnight flight outfits, comfort and sustainability should be top priorities.

Pact offers a range of stylish and sustainable options that are perfect for the eco-conscious traveler. By choosing outfits made from organic cotton, you can stay comfortable and stylish while reducing your environmental impact.

So next time you’re planning a trip, consider packing some cozy pieces from PACT to ensure a comfortable journey.

10 Chic & Stylish Travel Outfit Combinations That You Can Easily Recreate *Including Packing Tips*

Stylish travel outfits.

Do you have any travel planned over the next few months? Chances are, you probably have some sort of trip planned! If so, this post is for you! We travel quite a bit so it’s safe to say I’m a pro in this area. I’m frequently asked what to wear on travel days specifically so below, I’m sharing simple, stylish travel outfit combinations that you can easily recreate when you take your next trip! Plus, some important packing tips I’ve learned along the way…

By the way, if you’d like to see more outfit ideas and hear even more amazing packing tips, check out the corresponding video here .

Stylish Travel Outfits for women

#1) Sweatsuit

Today’s sweatsuits are a far cry from the Juicy sweatsuits we saw in the early aughts! The sweatsuit options now can look very chic, sophisticated, and like “regular” clothing. They’re also extremely comfortable, which is especially important if you’re on an overnight international flight and need to get some sleep or just want to be comfy on your next road trip.

The sweatsuit I’m wearing above is from the Spanx AirEssentials collection and I love it so much I have it in green, black, and a pretty beige color. What I love about these pieces is that they’re very chic, super lightweight, breathable, and SO comfortable. They also come in petite, regular, and tall length options and in cropped or full-length (I’m wearing a petite small). The pullover and pants are also wrinkle-resistant…a must for travel! If you don’t already have a comfortable sweatsuit that you love, I can’t recommend this set enough!

Note : You don’t have to wear a matchy-matchy set like this. If you have a pair of black joggers you love and a comfy sweater you love…pair those together for a similar look!

I talk more about this set and the AirEssentials collection in this post . AND…use code ERINXSPANX to get 10% off these pieces!

Activewear Stylish Travel Outfits

#2) Activewear

Next up is activewear! You’ve probably seen on your Instagram, the typical influencer travel uniform of leggings, blazer, sneakers, tee, and baseball hat. That’s a super cute look but it’s not personally my style. How I would do activewear when I travel is to wear wide-leg pants like these by Beyond Yoga. They look elevated, sophisticated, and not like traditional activewear. I paired it with the matching camisole and a cute wrap front cropped sweater so you still get that matchy activewear feel… just a bit more elevated.

Cargo Pants & Top

#3) Cargo Pants & Top

Cargo pants are comfortable and casual and are a step up from leggings or sweatpants. These pants are from Banana Republic and I love the fit, length, and utility-inspired details. If cargo pants aren’t your style, consider some more casual jogger-style pants instead. Either way…cargo pants, joggers, or trousers are a great alternative to jeans while you’re sitting on the plane.

For travel shoes, I typically like to wear closed-toe shoes like sneakers or booties but it’s totally up to you! If you prefer toe wiggle room, run hot, or are going somewhere tropical, you might want to wear sandals instead. I like to look at the shoes I’m packing and wear the bulkiest pair on travel day, so I have more room in my suitcase! And I never…NEVER…wear heels for travel days. Anyone else ever have to run through the airport to catch a flight??

Jeans & Top

#4) Jeans & Top

The next travel uniform that’s so simple, accessible, and easy to recreate from pieces in your own closet is jeans and a top! Jeans and a top with either sneakers or boots are my go-tos almost every time I travel. In the look above, I’m wearing a pair of Mother jeans that has the perfect inseam for me, a high rise so I feel secure but not uncomfortable, and a wide-leg silhouette. On top, I’m wearing a billowy top that doesn’t cling to the body and is comfortable and forgiving. If you’re going to go this route, try to pair your jeans with a top that’s a basic-with-a-twist to add some interest to the look. For example, this top has pretty crochet detailing at the neckline and fun bell sleeves. I’m wearing a pair of Rag & Bone sneakers in this look, but you can wear whatever sneakers you love or some booties to dress it up… just make sure they’re breathable, comfortable, and it’s not your first time wearing them. Travel is never the time to break in a new pair of shoes!

By the way, I’m sharing even more helpful tips in this corresponding video in case you’re interested!

Cropped Blazer & Jeans

#5) Cropped Blazer & Jeans

Next up is the cropped blazer and jeans combo. I run cold and for some reason, I’m really cold on planes and in airports. So, I love to have layers I can throw on or shed depending on how I’m feeling. Packing light layers is so important anyways, to ensure a properly functioning travel wardrobe.

I didn’t have a great picture of this outfit but still wanted to share it. Plus, you can see it in motion in the corresponding video . I’m wearing a tan cropped blazer from Mango that’s older but still a go-to for me, so I linked a similar option. Underneath the blazer, I’m wearing a white ruched tee (another basic-with-a-twist we’ve talked about!). I also threw on a scarf because it looks so chic, and it’ll keep me warm…fashion and function! Pair your blazer and tee with your favorite comfortable jeans and sneakers or booties and you’re ready to go in a chic, pulled-together travel outfit! I’m wearing my go-to Chloe sneakers I’ve worn on SO many trips since they’re just so comfortable, stylish, and versatile. They also have a little platform for some added height, which is a win in my book!

By the way, we shared an EPIC travel capsule wardrobe in this post that’s a must-read after you’re done with this post!

Long Blazer & Jeans

#6) Long Blazer & Jeans

Similar to the last look, wear a long blazer versus the cropped one. A longer blazer is a little harder to wear for petite women, but all you have to do is leave it unbuttoned and half-tuck your top into the front of your jeans to help elongate your look and balance the proportions.

In this look, I’m wearing a pair of Moussy Vintage jeans, which is one of my favorite denim brands because the washes are beautiful, the fit is perfect, and most of the styles are a little shorter…perfect for petite women (I’m 5’4” for reference). I paired the jeans with a basic white tee and this pretty off-white oversized blazer. I love the oversized fit for easy layering over anything you’re wearing or have packed. On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of Golden Goose sneakers that are the perfect combination of comfy and stylish. For my full review of Golden Goose sneakers, make sure you check out this post next.

Tip: Don’t ever wear a travel outfit that doesn’t function with the rest of your travel wardrobe. Whatever pieces you wear on the plane or in the car should be pieces you can wear again later in the trip with what’s already packed in your suitcase.

Light Jacket & Jeans

#7) Light Jacket & Jeans

This is another go-to travel uniform for me and it’s a great way to show that you can alter your travel uniform to whatever works for you and feels like your style. Your lightweight jacket could be a cargo jacket, bomber, leather jacket, denim jacket, etc. In this look, I’m wearing a Veronica Beard utility jacket that I bought for our trip to Africa and have been wearing nonstop! It’s such a gorgeous statement piece but again, you can wear whatever jacket works for you. I paired it with the same formula we’ve followed for the past few looks…chic jeans, a tee, and comfortable sneakers. In the photo, I’m wearing sandals but for travel, I’d swap it for sneakers or booties.

Trench & Jeans or Pants | Stylish Travel Outfits

#8) Trench & Jeans or Pants

You have to be careful when it comes to wearing longer coats or jackets during travel because you don’t want to risk having anything drag on the floor while you’re walking through the airport or in the ladies’ room! But a mid-length coat is usually perfect. I personally love how pulled together and sophisticated a trench looks and how it can completely elevate any outfit. Plus, it’s usually a great piece to have with you while you travel. But you could also go with a cardigan or wool coat depending on your style, the weather where you’re traveling, and how you’re planning to wear it during the rest of your trip and with pieces you have packed.

Tip: When you’re packing, make sure to stick to a color story so that everything mixes and matches effortlessly. I like to stick to neutrals like beige, white, tan, black, etc., and only include 1-2 “special” pieces that are outside of my color story.

All Black Stylish Travel Outfits

#9) All Black

An all-black travel outfit will work for pretty much any destination and especially if your travel wardrobe color story includes black. In the look above, I’m wearing a chic black sleeveless sweater and some paper-thin black leather pants that I wore on a recent trip to California. These pants are super lightweight and breathable but you could easily swap these out for a pair of black jeans, joggers, leggings, trousers, cargo pants, or whatever you feel best in. On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of See by Chloe combat boots I’ve had for years and really love! They’ve been “on-trend” for years so I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon. Plus, they’re SO versatile, comfortable, and lightweight.

Cool Pants & Blazer travel outfit idea

#10) Cool Pants & Blazer

This is a bit of a wildcard but it’s such a fun look that I just had to share! I’m wearing a pair of Me+Em houndstooth wide-leg pants. They have a comfy elastic waistband, are super comfortable, and the length is great on me. I paired them with a basic black tee, an oversized black blazer by IRO, and combat boots. Throughout this post, you probably noticed the pattern…jeans + top + outerwear. This outfit breaks the mold a little bit and just adds some interest and fun to the mix!

35 Best Women's Loungewear Sets to Pack on Your Next Trip

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Some may argue that traveling by plane is an occasion to dress up, but for most of us at Traveler, comfort is the main priority when planning a transit day ensemble: You want something loose enough that you won't need to readjust (or worse, unbutton) a few hours into a flight or road trip, but put-together enough to feel that you've made a switch out of pajamas and into a true outfit. Luckily, there is no shortage of loungewear sets these days.

Read on for 35 of the best loungewear sets to add to your travel wardrobe , many of which are sitting in our editors' dresser drawers. From upscale sweatsuits to cozy cashmere knits, they'll keep you comfy whether you're sitting on a plane, train, or in the passenger seat, and will get a re-wear on lazy vacation days when the only item on your to-do list is lounging around the Airbnb .

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. Additional reporting by Meaghan Kenny.

The Aerie LumberJane collection has been one of the brand's more popular releases. The collection features breathable, lightweight waffle fabric in shirts, shorts, and now polos. The LumberJane polo and short set are perfect for lazy vacation days spent shuffling around in your slippers . Each piece has raw seams along the sleeves, sides, and back that gives it a more lived-in look.

Buck Mason is at the forefront of elevated essentials. The Vintage Interloop set features an oversized crew that has a relaxed fit all around and thinly ribbed stiching on the cuffs to give more structure to the slouchy sleeves. The French terry sweatpants are slimming and so comfortable. Each set looks slightly different than the other, thanks to Buck Mason's Venice Wash technique that creates its cool, vintage look.

We're always raving about Girlfriend Collective, a size-inclusive, sustainably- and ethically-made brand. This set is made from half recycled, half organic cotton. They're available in your classic neutral colors, as well as this rich wine hue.

Kim Kardashian's shapewear and loungewear brand Skims never misses when it comes to cozy sets. The Cotton Fleece collection is a more sporty take on classic loungewear. The soft fleece shorts have an interior drawstring at the waist for a more customizable fit.

Image may contain: Clothing, Long Sleeve, Sleeve, Fleece, Knitwear, Sweater, and Sweatshirt

This chic pullover and sweat shorts both don the recognizable Alexander Wang logo. While the set is one of the trendiest pieces on our list, you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how soft the heavy brushed cotton terry is. Style the set with a small crossbody bag and pair of chunky dad sneakers for quick errands or walks around the city.

You can never go wrong with a simple high-waisted pant and tank top combo. The Anrabess sleeveless set is lightweight and thin, making it supremely packable in any weekender bag or carry-on. At just $30, it is one of the most affordable loungewear sets on our list.

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, Adult, Person, Dress, Formal Wear, and Fashion

Is there anything easier than throwing on a jumpsuit? Spanx AirEssentials jumpsuit is one of the brand's bestsellers—and it's just been restocked in more colors. We love the drawstring tie at the waist that gives the jumpsuit a more fitted and flattering look.

Traveler 's commerce producer, Paris Wilson , swears by Roots' loungewear. “I've been raving about Roots for years. It's hard to find a brand that doesn't skimp on quality,” she says. The Luxe Crew and Pintuck pant are made from a cotton and cashmere blend. While the material gives it a more chic look, the fit of the set is more relaxed and loose. This can easily be dressed up or down, and would look great with a sleek pair of white sneakers .

Image may contain: Clothing, Long Sleeve, Sleeve, Adult, Person, Shorts, Knitwear, Sweater, and Sweatshirt

The loose fit of the Ramona sweatshirt compliments the brand's drawstring waist Jane shorts. The rouched terry fabric on the inside of each garment keeps you warm and cozy without overheating. As warmer days approach, the yellow dip-dye design is a must-have for your spring and summer wardrobe .

Image may contain: Fashion

If you're looking for a more polished look, the Malibu set is for you. The set is made up of the Frank & Eileen Audrey Capelet and the Catherine Sweatpant . Each piece is made from 100 percent cotton triple fleece, making it incredibly soft. It's the perfect set for a long road trip or a chilly plane.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shorts, Tank Top, and Vest

The Cool Stretch collection from Pact is made from breathable organic cotton. The soft, thin layers are a go-to summer fit when temperatures are high and you just want to chill inside. The tank top and shorts set comes in seven colorways and can be paired with Pact's Airplane cardigan or a cozy hoodie .

overnight travel outfit

If you prefer something a little more roomy, the Oversized Tee and Harem Pant set from This is J is for you. It’s perfect for long-haul flights and road trips where comfort is at the top of your list, but you don’t want to step out in your pajamas. The soft, moisture-wicking fabric will keep you dry and comfortable whether you’re snuggled up on a train or plane.

overnight travel outfit

This set is made for cold weather. The thick fabric will keep you warm and toasty whether you’re hanging inside with friends or out sightseeing. The top has a dropped shoulder sleeve that looks more oversized while the pants feature a wide-leg with a drawstring waist.. The set comes in 10 solid colors that are easy to pair with a slip-on sneaker or Ugg boots .

overnight travel outfit

The soft ribbed knit of the Muse hoodie and sweatpant offers a lot of dimension to the duo. The set is lightweight enough that it can be worn over workout clothes without any bulkiness. The high-waisted joggers pair well with the cropped hoodie and offer a more chic silhouette.

You’ll be comfortable from head to toe with this ultra-soft pullover and pant set. The pants have a classic ‘70s wide-leg silhouette accompanied by an elastic waistband, while the pullover has a polo-inspired collar and a slightly cropped hem. An all-white set never goes out of style and will look great with a white sneaker .

The name tells you everything you need to know. The Coziest Cashmere Blend hoodie and jogger are ultra-soft. The fabric is warm yet breathable and the fact that it’s a blend gives you peace of mind that it won’t be ruined in the washing machine.

Traveler editors swear by Lunya's washable silk pajamas and cashmere Travel Set . The brand’s Silksweats complete its holy trinity of comfort. With a sherpa interior and thermoregulating abilities, you'll be comfortable without overheating in this set. Bonus: Both pieces are reversible so you can have two looks for one.

There's something to be said for a zip-up sweatshirt, even if they've largely been replaced by pullovers of late. For one, if your temperature flips from chilly to warm, you can regulate without bothering your seatmate while trying to take off your hoodie. We're a fan of the sweatpants, too: the deep pockets, cuffed ankles, and cashmere fabric are all plusses.

A new addition to OV's ultra-soft, lightweight, and durable CloudKnit line-up : this boxy T-shirt with a slightly cropped fit. It comes in charcoal, navy, mocha, fog white, and jasmine blue, all of which will match your go-to black leggings or joggers .

Awarded one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2020, I was eager to put on Cozy Earth's ultra-soft joggers, and am happy to report they lived up to the hype. Made of a mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and spandex, they're smooth and cool to the touch, and have a loose but not baggy fit. I've worn them a ton on WFH days, and would happily fly in them. Snag a matching pullover if you like the matching set look.

San Francisco–based Quince launched a maternity collection, which includes a nursing-friendly long sleeve and lounge joggers with an adjustable drawstring waistband. All of the collection's pieces are made with renewable materials like Tencel lyocell, a biodegradable fiber made from wood pulp; mulberry silk, a hypoallergenic and thermoregulating fabric; the company's SuperSoft fabric, a blend of recycled polyester and tencel; and sustainably- and humanely-sourced Mongolian cashmere.

Outdoor Voices’ All Day hoodie and sweatpants set really is made to wear from dusk to dawn. It aims to be the softest pair of sweats you will ever wear, and stacks up, with a CloudKnit fabric that feels as cozy as your most worn-in pair of pajamas. The sweatpants are high-rise and more fitted toward the bottom to give the most flattering look possible, too. The pieces can be bought individually and come in six different colors, from neutral charcoal to a rich Kalamata purple.

While former Traveler editor Jessica Puckett's favorite cashmere set has since sold out, Cuyana's Pima outfit is another great option for plane travel and lounging, particularly in warmer environments, as the material is soft, smooth, and breathable.

Former Traveler editor Corina Quinn turned us on to Vuori's DreamKnit Collection hoodie and jogger set. “The DreamKnit feels like a cloud—it's so soft and cozy, yet lightweight, so you don't get too hot or too cool in them,” she says. “On top of that, because there are a few different models of jogger pants and tops, my friends and I have all found a model that's flattering for us.” For a pair of sweats that make you feel like you’re wearing a real outfit without actually doing so, Vuori’s unbelievably soft, stretchy sets are an easy pick.

Friend + Folk is a size- and gender-inclusive brand that prioritizes a limited carbon footprint, and puts it into practice by way of free carbon neutral shipping, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, limited batch-production, and more. The Joon joggers are a favorite—the fit is roomy and comfortable yet still tailored, and the zippered pockets are ideal for stashing AirPods, lip balm, and other odds and ends without worrying they'll fall out as you dash through the airport. Pair them with the Perry pullover and you've got a new airport uniform.

Lululemon may be best known for its leggings and workout wear, but don't skip over the brand's loungewear. This set is made out of a smooth Softstreme material that is stretchy and feels smooth against your skin. It's a great loungewear set to wear if you run hot.

We love this Madewell number, made of a fleece-like Superbrushed terry fabric. Wide legs and a loose fit make it just the kind of thing we want to wear on long travel days, and the patch pockets are much appreciated. Since it does have tank top-style straps, bring a cardigan or other added layer for the plane.

Some loungewear is better suited for inside wear, like this cozy ribbed shorts set. Wear the pullover, with its bell sleeves and slit in the back, over leggings for long-haul flights. The stretchy shorts have a fairly short inseam, so they'll likely be more comfortable as a sleeping short or loungewear piece to change into when you arrive at your hotel or rental house.

This two-piece set might be the closest thing to sleepwear on this list, and yet is still cute enough to feel confident while wearing through the airport. It comes in a dozen colors, from basic heather gray to bold indigo blue, and pairs slouchy, relaxed fit pants with a scoop-neck button-up henley.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Human, Person, Standing, and Pants

Sure, all sweatpants are designed to be comfortable, but the cotton, modal, and spandex fabric Knix uses takes things up a notch. The smooth, cooling, and slightly stretchy fabric feels fantastic against skin and looks a bit more put-together than typical sweatpant material.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Dress, Human, Person, and Pants

Most loungewear tends to follow the same cut, so we appreciate Monos, a luggage brand , shaking things up when delving into clothing. This set is as soft as any sweatpants out there, with a mid-length wide-leg pant and a short sleeve V-neck tee that's just slightly cropped.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Pants

Anything labeled Signaturesoft nails both the rest day and flying-comfortably mood we're going for. The top and bottom have a streamlined shape and the sweatpants are tapered at the ankle. Both pieces are made of a comfortable rayon, acrylic, and spandex mix, so you’ll feel cozy while still looking put together. The sweatshirt and sweatpants can be purchased individually and come in nearly a dozen colors should you want to mix and match, and the sweatshirt passes the video-conferencing-chic test, in that it looks more like a standard sweater than workout wear.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pajamas, Human, and Person

Not a hoodie person? You might like this cowl-neck top, which comes with cropped pants, both made of a super soft jersey and spandex fabric. Shop the set in gray, sky blue, strawberry, or buttercream, and wear it on your next overnight flight to feel like you're in pajamas.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, Human, Person, Suit, Coat, Overcoat, Sleeve, and Long Sleeve

You may never want to put on pajamas again after wearing Softwear's Lounge Set. The fabric is buttery soft inside and out. Both the pullover and joggers are tailored and fitted with a clean silhouette—the top could pass for a normal sweater—while still being ultra soft. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The sustainable fabric is pilling-resistant and made to keep its shape after every wear.

Made for pregnant or nursing moms, this Everly Grey set is designed to fit a baby bump and make nursing easier with side openings on the top. Made of stretchy fabric with cuffed ankles and wrists and pockets on the hips, it's a loose, ever-so-slightly tailored look you'll wear again and again. Order it in one of four neutral colors: black, charcoal, oyster pink, or denim blue.

7 Convenient and Comfortable Travel Outfits

Choose a Comfortable Staple

Let's be honest: comfort is the number one priority when planning a travel outfit. But just because something is comfortable doesn't mean it's not fashionable. Choose one chic staple item that serves as your go-to when planning for a flight, like this navy jumpsuit that we'd happily wear on a non-travel day. Pair it with your favorite sandals (if you're heading to a warm destination, that is) and voila: travel outfit complete.

Pair a Dress With Practical Shoes

A dress is a perfect option for travelers who want to look a bit more put together during their flight. But heels are really a tough sell for a day that consists of running through the airport, getting shuffled through security, and squeezing into an airplane seat. Opt for a pair of chic sneakers instead, like these designs by Tory Burch, that pair fabulously with a dress but are still practical and comfortable.

Optimize Coziness With a Coordinated Sweatsuit

A long-haul flight is exactly the right time to dust off that coordinated sweatsuit you promised to never wear in public. And if you're going to wear a sweatsuit during a busy travel day, make it a chic and cozy cashmere and silk getup like this Something Navy ensemble.

Layers on Layers

If you're traveling with a sweater or coat to a colder destination, the best way to transport them anywhere is simply by wearing them on the flight. Your bulkiest sweater or warmest winter coat will no doubt take up space in your suitcase, so eliminate that issue all together by layering them on during your journey. That means you might be sweating through the terminal, but remember: your coat will double as a blanket once you're on the plane.

Jeans and Cute Flats Will Never Fail

Why not rely on a classic combination on a travel day? Comfortable jeans and a cute pair of flats will never fail as a travel outfit staple. Opt for jeans that are high-waisted and cropped to maximize comfort, and pick a pair of flats you'll wear non-stop once you arrive at your destination.

Leggings Will Not Disappoint

The great debate on athleisure-as-real-clothing may linger on, but there's one point we can all agree on: leggings are the most comfortable bottoms to fly in. Try a standard pair of black leggings with a cozy sweater or jacket, like the green one here, with sneakers for your next travel day. You won't regret it.

Bringing Accessories? Try Wearing Them All

The best way to travel with hats, sunglasses, scarves, and any other accessories you're bringing on a trip is simply by wearing them. Yes, that means you'll be way overdressed for the flight, but truthfully: wouldn't you rather your smaller accessories actually arrive at your destination than get lost as TSA inevitably searches through your bags?

Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

travel outfits

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

This post gave me a more clear idea of what I will wear when travelling and I especially loved the part where you mentioned the all black and all white monochromatic looks .

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

15 Polished Travel Outfits That Are Easy, Comfortable, and Perfect to Shop on a Budget

These matching sets look good the second you land.

Having the right arsenal of comfy airplane outfits is key to becoming a pro traveler. Every single time I’m at the airport (which is several times a month) I’m wearing the same type of travel uniform — and it’s always comfortable, cozy, and makes me look put-together no matter where I’m going or what time the flight is.

How does one create the perfect airplane outfit you ask? Easy! By opting for a matching set. From super warm fleece options to stylish and effortless crops and sweatpants, Amazon is the place to go if you’re looking for your next favorite airplane outfit.

To make your search much easier, I found some of the coziest and most affordable airplane outfits Amazon has to offer. Did I mention they are all under $60? Scroll to find your favorite — I won’t judge if you have more than one.

Pink Queen Women’s 2-Piece Sweatsuit

Buy on Amazon

If you’re the kind of traveler who’s looking for something a bit more stylish than the usual sweatsuit, this is the one for you. This two-piece set features a pullover hoodie and drawstring joggers, and the hoodie features a cute peek-a-boo cutout just above the chest that adds a little unexpected fun and flair, making this cozy airport outfit anything but basic. It’s available in sizes S to XL in an array of colors including black, navy blue, green, apricot (think this year’s Pantone Color of the Year — peach fuzz), and bright pink. It’s soft and lightweight, and shoppers say it’s “warm without being too heavy.” Plus, it’s on sale right now thanks to an on-site coupon.

Etcyy Women’s Knitted Sweatsuit

This oversized set features a slouchy wide-leg pant and a large, flowy ribbed sweater with side slits. Designed with a super relaxed fit, it's both lightweight and warm. It’s available in several colors, many of which feature a horizontal striped pattern that breaks up the usual monotone look. One flight attendant shared that this outfit is great for hotel layover days. Some reviewers say the pants run a little short, so if you’re on the taller side, keep that in mind. The top also pairs well with jeans or shorts, making it a great mix-and-match set.

Fuphine Women's 2-Piece Oversized Sweatsuit

When you close your eyes and picture a classic, cozy, perfectly oversized sweatsuit, this set is probably the one you see. With a crew neck pullover and sweatpants that feature an elastic waist and ankles, it’s super warm and ideal for flights with blasting air conditioning. Lined with fleece, it’s warm enough for winter travels, and shoppers say it runs true to size — though it only comes in four sizes: small, medium, large, and extra large. While sizing isn’t the most flexible, the design is as there are a few different versions, including one with a cut-out in the sweatshirt and one with fleece shorts instead of pants.

Anrabess Oversized Knit Loungewear

If you’re looking for that comfy pajama-like outfit that’s still functionally fashionable enough to wear out of the house, consider this loungewear set. Oversized and flowy, it’s available in 25 colors, meaning there’s definitely an option to match your travel aesthetic. The fabric features a waffle-knit texture, and the top has a V-neck with a handful of large buttons. Meanwhile, the pants are wide-legged and cropped. Several shoppers say they love it for travel days, but if you add a few accessories and a pair of booties, you could probably also wear it to grab drinks with friends just as easily.

PrettyGarden Corduroy Long Sleeve Button Down Jacket and Pants Tracksuit

This set is not only easy to throw on and walk out the door, but it’s also full of personality. The corduroy fabric elevates the outfit with very little effort, and the shacket (a shirt-jacket combo) allows for easy layering and gives you the option to wear it open, closed, tied, French tucked, and more. Plus, the pants are jogger-style with an elastic cuff at the bottom that allows them to achieve that effortless baggy look we all love. Available in eight colors, it’s one of those outfits that’s great to wear on a flight, but can also be worn once you land for your first activities — you know, just in case your hotel room isn’t ready when you arrive.

Btfbm Women's 2 Piece Tracksuit

If you’re looking for something a bit sporty, this just might be your vibe. This tracksuit features jogger pants and a half-zip sweatshirt. It’s well-fitting with a ribbed-knit and provides warmth without being too overbearing and restrictive. One reviewer says it's so comfortable that it makes them want to travel, and that’s exactly what I want to hear when I’m on the hunt for a cozy airplane outfit. It’s available in 18 colors with bright options like royal blue, rose red, and lake blue (that’s really more of a teal), but also plenty of muted more neutral colors like coffee, gray, black, and khaki.

Sel Natural 2 Piece Fleece Sweatsuit

I love the versatility of this two-piece set thanks to its cropped zippered hoodie. Allowing you to layer as you see fit, you can opt for a simple tank, a sports bra, or even a long-sleeved undershirt and can easily open the jacket in case you find yourself too warm — which just might happen as the entire outfit is lined with plush insulation. You’ll never have to worry about not having enough space to store your important things like your phone and passport during travel as this set features four pockets: two in the pants and two in the hoodie.

Ekouaer Women's 2-Piece Lounge Set

Not every cozy airplane outfit needs a hoodie or jacket (perhaps you already own one you want to rock!), and that is why I love this particular set. Wide-legged pants paired with a cropped baby tee are perfect for easy breezy travel days. Want longer sleeves? No worries — there’s a long-sleeved version and even a sleeveless one if you’re headed somewhere tropical! It also comes in 19 different colors and patterns, meaning you might find yourself clicking “add to cart” more than once. If you’re missing having a jacket while traveling (we know those airports get cold), you could add an oversized denim jacket like I do on top for an added vibe and access to pockets.

PrettyGarden 2-Piece Outfit

Simple and to the point, this cozy airplane outfit features a comfortably fitting crew neck sweatshirt and slouchy jogger pants with a drawstring waistband. It’s available in a whopping 26 colors, and it’s even size-inclusive with a range from S to 3XL, meaning it would make a great gift for any frequent flier on your shopping list. Dozens of shoppers have said it’s the perfect outfit for travel, and it's just as easy to dress up as it is to throw on and walk out the door (you know, for when you’re cutting it too close to boarding time). While some reviewers say it’s not super warm, I think it’s great for those who run a bit warm or like to travel with a statement piece jacket (me, I’m talking about me).

Btfbm Crop Top Pullover and Drawstring Pant Jogger Set

Crop tops are officially back in style, and if you’re all about embracing the trend, then this is the cozy airplane outfit for you. Featuring a classic jogger sweatpant with a drawstring waistband and a pullover crewneck that’s cropped just above the waist, it’s available in a dozen colors and sizes S to XL. One traveler said she particularly loved that after a 14-hour flight, she didn’t have the dreaded saggy behind that comes from so many other sweatpants — we’ve all been there, so I’m thrilled to hear that’s not the case with this set.

Fixmatti Women's 2-Piece Outfit

Simple and stylish, this two-piece outfit keeps it classic with just a bit of added excitement. The pullover features balloon sleeves that not only allow for less restriction but also add a little something to the look. Additionally, the drawstring joggers have pre-rolled cuffs that give them a cleaner, tidier look. Available in 25 color options, including color-blocked ones, I love that this set’s pieces are easy to mix and match with other tops and bottoms adding more versatility to your luggage.

Ekouaer Women's 4-Piece Lounge Set

Sure, this set is a bit more pajama-looking than the rest on the list, but I can’t help but love what a great deal it is considering it’s a four-piece set. That’s right, for $40 this outfit has lounge pants, shorts, and two different tank tops, meaning you can mix and match all you want. If you’re the type that gets a bit chilly when traveling, then you can just as easily throw a jacket or cardigan on top and still won’t have to worry about overheating as the tank top is thin and airy. The pants might be a bit short, especially if you’re on the taller side, but look great with a pair of clean white sneakers or even Ugg boots. It’s available in six colors and sizes up to 2XL, and as one shopper said, it’s “perfect for a lounge set at home, traveling, or just running a quick errand!”

Saukole Open Front Knit Cardigan and Wide Leg Pants Lounge Set

Coming in at just under $55, this set gives me major cool girl vibes. The two-piece lounge set features a chunky cardigan that’s got ribbed-cuffed wrists, large buttons, striped detailing, and a dropped shoulder that makes it look much more expensive than it is. Paired with high-waisted wide-leg pants that create a flattering silhouette, it’s ultra comfortable, no matter how long of a flight you’re about to endure. While it appears to be a newer listing at Amazon, it’s got five-star ratings across the board, and that’s something I can absolutely get behind.

Zaful Women's Fuzzy Lounge Set

There’s nothing quite as cozy and soft as a teddy bear, and this Zaful lounge set lets you dress and feel just like one — especially if you opt for the deep orange version that in my opinion looks like teddy bear brown. Sure, it might be listed as a pajama set, but the pullover sweater top and long knit lounge pants are fuzzy while still being structured enough to wear in public, which means curling up in these is a no-brainer for a long flight. Plus, I don’t know about you, but my overnight travel outfits lean more toward the pajama side of the scale anyway, so this is right up my alley, and you’re bound to love it, too.

Anrabess 2-Piece Short Sleeve Sweater Set

Clean, classy, and oh-so-stylish is the message you’d be sending as you strut through the airport wearing this cozy outfit. The top features a short-sleeve crewneck with a split-side high-low hemline, while the pants have an elastic waistband and a pleated wide leg. Available in neutral colors like black, white, navy, and khaki, it’s a simple and sophisticated look that will make you feel good and look great for the entirety of your travel day. It’s easy to pair with sneakers or a cute strappy sandal, and you can throw on a jacket and some jewelry when you’re ready to hit the town the moment you land.

Summer Travel Outfits: What to Wear on an Overnight Flight (Summer 2023)

Summer Travel Outfits: What to Wear on an Overnight Flight (Summer 2023)

Sharing is caring!

The question about what to wear on an overnight flight can be a hotly debated one. Among my own crowd of travel-loving friends, there is a deep division as to what outfits are appropriate for overnight summer travel.

Travel outfits: What to wear on an overnight flight or long plane ride travel dress travel clothes

Some insist on traveling in style and wearing only their most fashion-y outfits, no matter the length of flight. Unsurprisingly, these friends also usually fly business class.

Others look at me like I’m insane– why would you wear anything on an overnight flight but your oversize comfy college sweatshirt and yoga pants, they ask, clearly confused by the question.

Summer travel outfits for long flights

That’s me waving, getting off my flight in Moab.

Like most people, I fall somewhere in the middle. I prefer not to look too unkempt. But on the other hand, there is no reason to suffer through a seven hour (or most recently, 22 total hour) overnight flight for the sake of vanity. Comfort is key.

Since everyone’s idea of what’s comfortable varies, these summer travel outfit ideas are just my personal suggestions. As an overall guide, I look for outfits free of hard seams (so jeans are out), don’t cut into the waist or chest, and are soft with some stretch.

1. Most Comfy Travel Shoes for flights and on the ground– Sneakers

The most important piece of any travel outfit is of course your shoes. I used to wear comfy sandals like these much more often, but my current default is sneakers, which are better for things like biking, scootering and hiking. I own all the sneakers mentioned in this post, bought on my own dime.

A Word on Socks

Socks are a must when walking a lot. Here in NYC, everyone is wearing little ankle socks with their sneakers (shocking for those of us with memories of scrunchy socks in elementary school). These are the specific socks that went viral, and though it might take some getting used to the look, you will be on trend.

If your heart still lies with no see socks, I recommend these cushy padded ones , they don’t slip and are the best no see socks I have ever tried.

If you are fashion forward and want the most comfortable travel sneaker imaginable:

overnight travel outfit

I adore these Hoka sneakers — it took me awhile to give in to the viral hype about them (touted as “the most comfortable shoe”)– but  I’m happy to report the hype is real. Once considered “dad shoes” when paired with street clothes, I’m thrilled that it’s now considered stylish to wear athletic shoes with dresses, pants and everything else.

Hokas are known for their gorgeous bright colors so I went for purple, which is great for a pop of color (they also come in neutrals).

If you want travel sneakers that blend with any outfit and offer supreme comfort level try these low platforms:

Dr. Scholl’s Low Platform Sneaker

overnight travel outfit

These Dr. Scholl sneakers went viral on TikTok and quickly sold out– but I see they are back in stock. The low platform is low enough to be stable but high enough to add that critical extra cushioning.

overnight travel outfit

I can’t decide which sneaker I prefer, the Dr. Scholl’s above or this Converse low platform . Dr. Scholl’s might have a slight edge in comfort while Converse has a slight edge in style. I own both pairs– the Converse in white, the Dr. Scholl’s in a versatile light grey.

2. Comfortable Travel Dresses for Planes

A dress is the perfect stress-free summer travel outfit– no coordination is required, just throw it on and go. Because planes are usually chilly, I always throw on a hoodie, wrap or cardigan with my travel dress, and just peel off the layers on arrival.

Depending on the length of the skirt, I sometimes add cropped leggings so I contort myself into any necessary position to sleep in your seat without fear of flashing anyone (see my picks below).I own a slew of travel dresses (bought on my own dime). I updated this post to include the ones that are still available online below.

Columbia Dress

overnight travel outfit

This adorable travel dress comes in multiple colors, has a built in bra and is wrinkle free (and a bargain at $43 last I checked in June 2023). Buy it here.

Toad & Company Liv Dress

overnight travel outfit

This travel dress  is blousy and comfy (you can un-cinch the drawstring waist when you nap on the plane, and cinch it back up when you’re ready to deplane), it actually looks chic enough to wear out on the town. Buy it here.

Prana dress

overnight travel outfit

This super soft jersey Prana dress feels like pajamas, but still looks chic on the street.  It comes with a built in bra. Buy it here .

Cute Short Sleeve Travel Dress, knee length

overnight travel outfit

This dress has more coverage with the sleeves and is knee length.

The Maxi-Dress

overnight travel outfit

A long maxi dress can be the perfect travel outfit to curl up in on plane. The key with making a maxi dress work is the weight of the fabric and the way it drapes– make sure the dress is feather light.

Featured: Maxi Dress buy it here.

Add Capri Leggings

To make any of the above styles airplane ready, just slip on some comfy capri leggings.

My favorites:

  • Discount: Hue crop leggings
  • Lux:  Beyond Yoga crop leggings

3. Summer Travel Outfit for Overnight Flights: Wide leg linen pants

overnight travel outfit

The wide, stretchy waist on these linen pants makes them perfect start to a travel outfit. A bargain and a slew of colors for only 29.99 on Amazon. Check them out here.

Most people don’t realize that linen pants can be as comfortable as your most ratty sweatpants– except you can actually wear them in public and look like you put some thought into getting dressed. The key to finding comfortable linen pants for travel is all in the waistband– I look for super wide, stretchy waists (not drawstring)

Add Tank Top or Fitted Tee

overnight travel outfit

Featured: tank top with built-in bra (several colors)

I prefer to wear a fitted top with loose pants, so a simple tank top works for me– especially one with a built-in bra.

Add a Wrap, Cardigan or Hoodie

overnight travel outfit

I prefer a zip hoodie over a cardigan sweater to cuddle up in on a long flight. A cute pattern or pop of color keeps the hoodie from looking like you’re heading to the gym.

Featured: Blue lightweight hoodie from Amazon (comes In 18 colors, only $32 as of June 2023) or this star hoodie.

4. Cropped Joggers

You no longer have to head to your athletic store to find comfy pants– you’ll find them at regular stores (at higher prices, but mercifully, far better fits).

I’d pair these slim cropped joggers with a slouchy but stylish tee or tank and finish the look with a lightweight cotton scarf (see some ideas below).

 5. A scarf to tie your travel outfit together

overnight travel outfit

Sometimes all you need to pull together a look and take it from leisure wear to travel wear is a great lightweight scarf. Europeans (especially Parisians) wear them all summer long, even in the most stifling heat. While I toss my scarf when the mercury rises, I like to wear one on a plane and on chilly evenings.

Eileen Fisher scarf (blue and white)

Patricia Nash Floral Scarf

And Finally, Why Your Summer Travel Outfit Matters

Upgrades aren’t always an urban legend– it can happen!

I woke up for my early morning flight from Bangkok to New York and considered wearing the very yoga pants I slept in straight on the plane (thoughts like “who cares, I’ll never see these people again!” did run through my mind).

When I arrived at the gate, I practically cried with joy as Emirates handed me an upgraded business class boarding pass. My first thought? Thank god I didn’t wear yoga pants.

You never know who might be your seat mate

You could land a seat next to that cute guy (or girl) or even a potential business prospect. Granted, this never happens to me, but it did happen to a friend whose now husband fell in love at first sight . And no, she was not wearing yoga pants.

You want to be ready to go when you arrive at your destination

I’ve tried the old “change at arrival.” It’s a hassle. As many overnight flights land early morning, well before check in, there is no need to find a changing room, I just drop my suitcase off and go.

I prefer legging hoddie sweater and sneakers

Thanks for sharing! On the plane yes for sure-- there are times though when I have to go straight from the flight to city touring.

Monday 16th of April 2018

hello there!

I usually wear light materials. linen pants, ballet flat shoes and cardigan, light top... when I went to Germany last fall I didn't bring any long jacket because when my tante picked me up from the airport she already had my jacket waiting, but I made sure I look classy enough incase "upgrading is in the corner".

Thursday 17th of May 2018

haha, good idea! Linen pants are a fave.

Monday 2nd of October 2017

What's wrong with yoga pants?

On a serious note, I agree with the commenter above about pajamas; once I discovered the joy of wearing an outfit onto the plane, changing into PJ bottoms and a comfy top and then changing back before landing, I can't go back. Some airlines give the Business or First Class passengers complimentary pajamas so if you get in that situation, save them for future use.

Also, I find that passengers on the flight are so concerned about themselves that they don't care what you look like!

Tuesday 24th of October 2017

Sadly while I've flown biz I haven't flown first and gotten the pjs : ( Agree no one is looking people are very self absorbed but I still like to look decent for me. And totally nothing wrong with yoga pants if you're going to yoga..or on a hike or something, reminds me I should find some to review bc no question I use them! Just not on a plane lol.

as l do long haul flights from Australia to the UK then the States before coming back home l believe in being comfy, specially as I'm a large woman too..hence why l like leisure pants that are wide legged..they are comfy for contortioning in your seat and if they are a solid colour can be made to look a little dressy too with right tops..and they are comfy for sleeping in as well..

I've traveled to 9 out of 10 countries in Southeast Asia. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I made along the way.

  • I've traveled solo to nine countries in Southeast Asia.
  • I've made many mistakes, from traveling during monsoon season to forgetting to bring enough cash.
  • Travelers should make sure they plan ahead and research each country's culture.

Insider Today

Over the last two years, my journey as a travel enthusiast and Business Insider's travel reporter in Singapore has brought me to almost every country in Southeast Asia.

In total, there are 10 countries in Southeast Asia , and I've traveled to nine of them — Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei. Myanmar remains the only country in the region I have not visited, and while I am keen to explore it, I have held off on visiting because of the country's ongoing civil war.

I've watched the sun rise in Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cared for elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I've explored the Bornean jungle in Brunei and crawled the Cu Chi Tunnels in southern Vietnam.

But it hasn't always been easy. I've made several mistakes traveling across the region , especially as a solo traveler. Here are five mistakes I made and how to avoid them.

1. Going during monsoon season and not planning for the weather.

overnight travel outfit

In July, I traveled to Thailand on a reporting trip to cover the budding cannabis industry . There, I was met with heavy rain nearly every day. In Bangkok, I was staying in a hostel in Chakkrawat , a district with narrow, meandering streets, which made it difficult to walk anywhere in the pouring rain.

I didn't plan for the weather, so I didn't have an umbrella or poncho with me and had to rush to get one at the last minute. I also had a packed itinerary with a lot of travel between meetings, which was a hassle in the constant downpour.

Before traveling to Southeast Asia, make sure to avoid two seasons — the monsoon season, which often comes with strong typhoons in countries like the Philippines, and the burning season, where farmers burn land for fertile soil. This is a common occurrence in countries like Laos, Thailand, and the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

When I traveled to Laos in April last year during the burning season , most of my plans — including a hot air balloon ride — were canceled because of the thick smog. I also didn't have an N95 mask with me, and I ended up with a sore throat.

If you do plan to come during these seasons, make sure to pack accordingly and plan a flexible schedule.

2. Traveling during Ramadan and expecting the same practices everywhere.

overnight travel outfit

Having grown up in Singapore, I'm familiar with the practices during Ramadan , the holy month for Muslims, where they fast for most of the day. I studied Malay for seven years, and in school, I often fasted with my Muslim classmates and ate only in private.

Still, in many cities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia , non-Muslims are free to dine in public, so long as they do so respectfully. But on my trip to Brunei in April — at the height of the burning season and in the middle of Ramadan — there were more practices I needed to observe.

Most restaurants were closed, and diners weren't allowed to eat there even if they were open — only take-out was allowed. Eating in public was a major faux pas even for non-Muslims, and if you want to drink some water, you can only do so when nobody is around.

It wasn't easy, especially as Brunei was sweltering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days. I made do by returning to the hotel for lunch and grabbing a big dinner with the locals at the night market after they had broken their fast.

3. Not packing enough modest outfits when visiting temples and mosques.

overnight travel outfit

Southeast Asia is pretty liberal, and you can wear whatever you want in many places. In popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia, lots of tourists walk around in bikini tops and shorts, and locals mostly tolerate it.

But there are certain places you do need to cover up, like places of worship, which include temples and mosques. When I visited Angkor Wat — the famed temple complex in Cambodia — in February last year, I found some tourists being told off by the local tour guides for wearing shorts and tank tops — "Tomb Raider" style.

I've learned to err on the right side of caution and bring a sarong wherever I go. It's an easy way to cover up and make an outfit more modest when you need to.

4. Forgetting to pack medication, especially when I plan to eat street food.

overnight travel outfit

Southeast Asia has some of the world's most flavorful food. In every country, you can find food that is cheap and delicious, and that includes Singapore , the world's most expensive city. In countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, street food dishes can cost as little as a dollar.

I eat mostly street food when I travel in Southeast Asia, so medicine for tummy-related illnesses is a must. I've only gotten sick twice from eating street food — and it was the same dish both times— and unfortunately, those were the few times I didn't have medicine with me.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I've eaten everything from pufferfish stew to frog porridge and dishes made with intestines off the street. I've learned to wash the utensils provided before digging in and make sure the food is cooked to order and heated up before being served.

5. Relying on my card and not bringing enough cash with me.

overnight travel outfit

In Singapore, I don't really use cash and often use Apple Pay, mobile payments, and cards. But I've found that many stores in other countries in Southeast Asia only accept cash.

For example, on my third trip to Vietnam, I spent an hour trying to make payment via bank transfer after the staff at a luxury perfume shop — which was selling items priced upwards of $200 — informed me at the last minute that they didn't accept card or contactless payment.

I've also found the majority of street vendors in the region only accept mobile payment — which is limited to local banks — or cash. I've learned to change a considerable amount of money before leaving the airport and keep whatever I didn't use for my next trip.

A bag becomes a different thing entirely when worn by different personalities — similar to how no one perfume smells the same on two different people. To test out this idea, we invited four different artists to style the same bag into their personal look and lifestyle for one day, dreaming up places across L.A. where they would wear it. The bag? The Acne Studios rivet wine box bag from the brand’s spring/summer ’24 collection. It felt like a bag tough enough to withstand a long day in L.A. and lightweight enough to not drag you down.

In the second installment of the series , Saturn Risin9 , a singer, performer and DJ, takes the bag to Pirate Studios, where she practices DJ sets ahead of the weekend. With the Acne bag in tow, the multi-hyphenate shows us how their personal style is a reflection of “ambition, being daring, being exciting, and how to bring those things together.”

“I try to design as if I’m in the future, not as if I’m trying to imagine what the future is about.”

April 10, 2024

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m a multihyphenate. I’m a performer, a singer, a DJ, I throw events. I have a charity, Rings Alliance, for trans and queer artists. We’re still getting our footing but you’ll be hearing more about that soon.

Describe your personal style.

I’ve always been really rebellious. And my mom says she knew the moment that she was pregnant with me that I was going to only do what I wanted. I think my style reflects that. Even the things that you would think I would care about — like what’s trending, what the standard of fashion or music is — I never really care. If it hits me, I wear it. And if it sounds good to me, I do it, because I can make anything work. I mean that in life as well as in my music and also in my style. I think my self, my work and personal style all reflect someone that works really hard for themselves and by themselves. It’s a reflection of ambition, being daring, being exciting, and how to bring those things together because it is really remarkable to do that in a world that does not champion and welcome that. (I’m blessed to have found a community and a personal world that does.) My style reflects that person, and my effort toward being great and having fun.

Talk to me about dreaming up an outfit around this Acne Studios bag.

For the last few years I’ve really been into these really small bags that don’t have a lot of space — I love a clutch size. So when I saw the bag I was excited because it was more spacious and had this rectangular shape so I knew that I could fit a lot of things in it, which meant that I had more options to wear things that allowed for a sleek [look]. I don’t have to wear pockets because my purse can hold it all, so I have these thigh-high boots on. I definitely thought about how flexible [the bag] would be for going out or even traveling because I don’t like to travel with a lot. I like to have as much as I can fit in my purse and still be sexy, cute and ready to go.

How does sense of place inform sense of style? How do you travel through L.A. with style in mind?

I’m usually in what I like to call butch-wares. I definitely like to be comfy when I travel through L.A., especially in the daytime — I’m not trying to put on a look. I also don’t want to be bogged down by the idea that dolls [trans women] need to present super feminine or hyper-femme to be able to pass through life. Passability is not even a concern for me. I just try to be as comfortable as possible because I’m doing so much at all times — why would I want to be uncomfortable on top of working as hard as I work? But, there’s nothing more c— than having a fab bag on you. Sweats or not, a fab bag is a fab bag. Like, actually, let me dress more bummy and pull out the Acne bag.

ELEKTROSTAL HOTEL - Reviews

Passengers on charter from Broome to Karratha forced to sleep overnight in bus after breakdown

Karen Jones sits under a tree in the Karratha town centre.

Nearly a week after six people were forced to spend the night in a broken-down bus on the side of a highway in Western Australia's north, a passenger says she has not received an apology or refund despite calling the company multiple times.

"I haven't heard anything back at all and that's really annoying, extremely annoying, and I find it quite rude," Karen Jones said.

"I think they should have contacted all passengers on that bus and sent an apology through to us all — 'Sorry the bus broke down for this reason' — just out of courtesy."

The service between the towns of Broome and Karratha in the state's north-west is run by Integrity Coach Lines, owned by the Pinnacle Travel Group.

Ms Jones was one of four passengers and said the charter bus bound for Karratha broke down at around 10pm on Saturday, 100 kilometres from the Sandfire Roadhouse on a remote stretch of the Great Northern Highway.

"The driver let us know that the bus was broken down and we would have to wait by the road until someone came out," she said.

Dead straight road cuts through remote part of the country

Ms Jones said the two drivers could not get the satellite phone to work and used a mobile phone to call for help before they tried to determine the cause of the breakdown.

"They went outside and they were looking around, trying to muck around with the engine … looking at the fuel," she said.

Some of the passengers then received text messages from the company which told them their journey would be delayed 12 hours.

'Stressful' night spent on side of highway

Ms Jones said one of the drivers informed them no-one from Broome was available to drive out, which meant they would have to wait until the next morning for assistance.

"Surely there was some way they could organise someone to come out and pick us up or do something, but there was nothing," she said.

Ms Jones said the passengers were upset by the delay, with about 10 bottles of water on board, family waiting to collect them, and one woman on a working visa with limited funds to travel.

Karen Jones looking at her phone screen

Trying to sleep that evening inside the bus was uncomfortable as she was two weeks post-surgery, she said.

"It was quite stressful knowing that you're sleeping on the side of the road with five strangers and in the complete darkness."

Ms Jones said the driver told her the bus broke down because it had run out of fuel, which baffled her.

"How does that happen in this day and age, two-and-a-half hours out of Broome, on a coach that goes up and down all the time and it's run out of fuel?"

A Pinnacles Bus Tour coach arrived the next day around 9.30am, which Ms Jones said provided refreshments and fuel for the bus so it could continue its journey.

Incident was 'unfortunate'

Pinnacle Travel Group sales director Graeme Skeggs said the breakdown was unfortunate.

"There was an unfortunate breakdown on this Perth-Broome service that caused a delay to passengers, however passengers were provided with adequate water and fully assisted by the two drivers at all times, despite the long delay," he said.

A big white bus

Mr Skeggs said refreshments were supplied once the service was operational again on Sunday.

"The challenge of operating in remote areas and the tyranny of distance, being the only Perth-Broome service … when breakdowns occur there is little immediate assistance," he said.

Upon return to Perth this week, the company confirmed the vehicle was undergoing "extensive diagnostics" to ascertain the cause of the breakdown.

Mr Skeggs said he had received no complaints from passengers on the service.

"To my knowledge we have not received any negative feedback from the affected passengers other than any comments that may have been directed to the drivers at the point of breakdown," he said.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

No matter the season, Madewell has long been the shopping destination for classic, breezy apparel that channels an effortless vibe through elevated basics and thoughtful silhouettes. However, the retailer is particularly well-suited for the warmer months, as its offerings for spring are some of the most stylish we’ve seen this year — as well as perfect for building a dream packing list for your upcoming travels.

Below, we’ve rounded up the 12 best travel wardrobe pieces hiding within the Madewell sale section, from flowing maxi skirts to the best, packable crossbody purse for avoiding theft. Whether you prefer to equip your suitcase with the basics or are instead looking to add some fun prints into your repertoire, there’s sure to be something for everyone here. And with discounts up to 71 percent off, you’ll be able to stick within your budget as well.

The Emmett Wide-Leg Crop Pant

Simple denim will never go out of style, but if you really want to upgrade your travel wardrobe this spring, these bright cotton pants will certainly do the trick. A best-seller at Madewell, these cropped pants add a bold pop of color to any outfit, instantly creating a more visually interesting look — all while keeping you comfortable while you’re sightseeing, shopping, or going out to dinner. The high-waisted design is effortlessly flattering on a wide range of body types, and a forgiving stretchy material ensures you’ll never feel restricted by your clothing. Best of all, the style is also available in petite and tall sizes.

Pleated Short-Sleeve Top

Veer away from simple T-shirts this season with this stunning pleated top that shows that the resurgence of the peplum trend doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Another best-seller, this adorable top is adorned with buttons down the front and the perfect cropped fit to hit at just the right spot above your high-waisted pants. Wider sleeves allow for a comfortable range of movement if you’re wearing this on a flight and need to be able to remove your suitcase from the overhead bin with ease, and with five gorgeous shades to choose from (at varying sale prices), your wardrobe is about to get a major upgrade.

The Piazza Crossbody Bag

Everyone needs a reliable purse to bring on every vacation that will keep their belongings safe, and we’re confident that the Piazza Crossbody Bag is just that. By nature, a crossbody is one of the most secure purse styles to ward off potential theft, and with a long adjustable strap and a drawstring and magnet closure, this pouch is practically made for travel. Plus, it’s large enough to carry everything from the basics (wallet, phone, and keys), to a tablet, a camera, or even a book if you desire.

Cropped Cargo Jacket

If you struggle to find the perfect jacket for spring that’s just warm enough without causing you to overheat, fear not, because this cropped cargo jacket is here to save the day. The casual design makes it well-suited to wear with anything from a simple pair of jeans to a flowing maxi dress for all of your upcoming occasions. Seeing as it’s made from 100 percent cotton, you can rest assured that this jacket will be with you season after season while staying in impeccable condition no matter how many trips you pack it for.

Satin Maxi Slip Skirt

There are few pieces quite as versatile as a breezy maxi skirt, so we suggest snapping up this best-selling essential while it’s on sale for as little as $74 in four spring-ready shades. This wardrobe staple is made from a breathable blend of polyester and viscose that creates the perfect drapey finish that elevates anything it’s paired with. An elastic waistband keeps this skirt comfortable above all, so from the airport to the streets of your destination, you’ll be able to take it all on in style.

Katrina Crop Vest Top

Menswear style isn’t going anywhere this spring, and this endlessly cool vest top is guaranteed to become one of the most reached-for pieces in your closet whether you’re traveling or getting dressed up for a day of running errands. A blend of tencel and polyester keeps this top from wrinkling as much as other fabrics (a major win for travelers), and while the flattering fit makes it easy to dress up, it can also be worn with something as simple as a pair of jeans and sneakers to give your street style some edge.

Crinkle Cotton Dolphin-Hem Shorts

Denim shorts are certainly not loved by everyone, so if you still want to show off your legs this season without slipping into rigid, unforgiving material, these best-selling cotton shorts are for you. The pull-on design makes them ideal for travel days when you’re in a hurry or are simply aiming to build an outfit that’s both comfy and cute, and a mid-thigh length means chafing will be kept to a minimum. Just snag the matching button-up shirt and you have your new go-to travel outfit for spring.

Ribbed Polo Cardigan Sweater

There’s a special place in any wardrobe for a cozy cardigan to wear from your flight to a day of activities during your travels, and this ribbed option from Madewell is here to vie for that spot — especially while it’s on sale for $80. This top stands apart from other cardigans due to the polo-style collar and pocket details, while a slightly cropped length is great for when the weather begins to warm up if you don’t want to be swimming in excess fabric. Wear it with jeans, over a dress, or styled with a maxi skirt, but you can rest assured that this sweater will always allow you to look your best.

Superbrushed Pull-On Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are one of those styles that always look pulled-together while still capturing the comfort that’s essential to any good travel wardrobe. This pull-on, cropped jumpsuit is no exception, and just in time for spring it’s now on sale at Madewell for $75. Its ultra-soft, brushed material is one of the major highlights of this piece, while the pull-on design promises to maximize your overall comfort while flying, so you don’t have to worry about too-tight fabric digging into your skin. It’s perfect for layering or wearing on its own, but no matter how you style it, this best-selling jumpsuit is sure to be an asset.

Signature Poplin Oversized Shirt

Whether you choose to wear it as a beach cover-up or a breezy top layer for a day of sightseeing, this oversized button-down shirt is guaranteed to play numerous roles in your spring wardrobe, and right now it’s available for just $40 at Madewell. A simple striped shirt will never go out of style, and the quality cotton that this option is made from only further confirms that it will occupy a valuable slot in your closet (or packing cubes) for years to come. This shirt is the peak of versatility as it can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, so no matter what’s on your agenda, you’ll always be prepared when you have it in your suitcase.

Madewell x Reebok Unisex Club C 85 Sneakers

Take your sneaker game to the next level this spring with this comfy and cool collaboration from Madewell and Reebok that’s so stylish, it’s selling out fast. Currently on sale for $68, these well-cushioned shoes boast durable leather exteriors and cushy, padded tongues that will feel comfortable from the very first wear. Supportive insoles provide everything you need to feel fresh on your feet during a long day of touring a new city, and spacious toe boxes give you space to spread out for a more natural fit. The reign of plain white sneakers has finally come to an end.
