Plus Size Travel Too

A Plus Size Guide To Group Travel Tours by Kirsty Leanne

plus 1 tours

Hi Besties! It’s Plus Size Travel Too founder, Kirsty Leanne here!

Group travel tours are becoming increasingly more popular but despite it being an incredibly affordable way to travel, it’s definitely something that can bring a lot of dread and anxiety to a plus size traveller.

Plus size friendly group travel tours are hard to come by and in some cases, I’ve known friends who have even  cancelled the group travel trips  they have booked due to the worry it has caused them in the run-up to their travels.

From keeping up with your group to finding an accessible tour, there are SO MANY important things for a plus size traveller to think about both before and during their trip.

Having had ALL of these worries and more, I know how daunting it can be to step off the plane knowing you’re about to join a group of people you don’t know for a couple of weeks of travelling. I worried whether I would be singled out for being fat, whether I would fall behind when we were on group tours and whether I would have to miss out on a lot of the activities due to weight limits and restrictions. I spent MONTHS worrying about whether or not my experience would be ruined and at times, I even thought about cancelling and travelling alone instead.  At least then I couldn’t hold anyone back, right?

What I learned, however, is that group travel is a great way to open yourself up to see a range of incredible places at once –  regardless of my size.

So, if you’re considering a group trip as a plus size traveller, this guide is designed to show you how you can make the most out of group travel before , during and after your trip.

Plus Size Friendly Group Travel Tours: A Guide

Note: This post is based on my group tour experience with Trek America, who unfortunately have closed down as a result of the pademic. For another great, much-loved, tour provider, I’d recommend Intrepid Travel.

Plus Size Friendly Group Travel Tours: Before

Make sure you’re doing as much research as you possibly can.

One of the best things you can do before you book your group travel tour is to ensure you’re doing as much research as you possibly can. There are so many different aspects to a tour that ultimately, you need to decide whether or not it’s for you.

From watching travel blogger vlogs to researching example itineraries, the more research you’re doing the better.

Questions you might want to think about answering include:

  • What tour provider will you be using?
  • Where do you want to travel to? Is it a plus-size friendly destination?
  • What kind of activities will you be doing?
  • How long are you looking to go for?
  • What are the sleeping arrangements like?

Choose A Provider That Has Your Best Interests At Heart

Although there are lots of group tour providers to choose from, not all of them are plus size friendly.

It might take some time when it comes to finding the right tour company for you but once you do, it will definitely help eliminate some of the worries you have.

Things to look out for include plus size people on their social media channels, advice for plus size travellers online and affiliations with plus size influencers. In some cases, you may find specialist plus size tour operators.

If You Have Any Concerns, Reach Out To Your Provider

If you do have concerns when it comes to being plus size on a group tour, reaching out to your provider is a great place to start.

They will be well-experienced and be able to answer any questions you have, especially when it comes to your biggest concerns.

Whether this means asking about the sleeping arrangements or finding out the weight limitations for the included activities, they will definitely be able to put your mind at ease. Although they may not be able to answer everything,  it’s always worth calling them for an open and honest chat.

Think About The Itinerary And If It Is Suited To You

When you’re looking at the various different tours that are available you need to be sure you’re looking at the itinerary in great detail. Although I would have loved to try some of the more active tours, I chose one that I knew would be much easier for me to manage in terms of fitness.

Considering your own limitations is the best possible way to ensure you’re picking a tour you enjoy.  If you want to be on the go and hiking mountains every day, 100% go for it.

Most tour operators will have a full itinerary and daily descriptions, giving you an idea of what to expect. If you’re looking for further information, you might want to consider searching for blog posts and YouTube videos too. You can’t always guarantee you’ll find one but if you do it can be a great resource.

Consider EVERYTHING That You Need To Pack In Order To Have A Comfortable Trip

Once you have booked your tour and started your travel arrangements, thinking about what you need to pack should be a priority. You want to ensure your trip is as comfortable as it can possibly be and if that means buying some  plus size travel essentials , make sure you’re stocking up as soon as you can.

For me, my essentials for a group travel tour definitely include  comfortable clothes and a portable fan.

Don’t Forget To Look Into The Sleeping Arrangements (You Can Book A Private Room If You Want)

One of my biggest worries when it comes to my group travel tour was the sleeping arrangements. As I had booked budget accommodation to save money I knew I was spending two weeks camping and as I hadn’t camped as a plus size person, I definitely had concerns. For our  guide to camping whilst plus size , you can visit this site here.

Although I didn’t have the opportunity to pay for a single tent, I know a lot of group tours will give you the opportunity to pay extra and stay in a separate room. Whilst it isn’t essential, I know a lot of people prefer to have their own space whilst travelling, especially if they haven’t met the people they’re travelling with before.

Personally, I loved the shared experience and felt it helped us bond instantly.  My size didn’t ever come into it.

Explore Ways To Get To Know Your Group Before You Leave

Another great way to put your worries at ease is to try and find a way to get to know your group before you leave. Most group tour operators will have a system that allows you to connect before your tour and if you’re worried, I strongly recommend giving it a go.

Most of the people on my tour joined a Facebook group a couple of months before we were due to travel and because of this, I didn’t feel like I was flying across the pond to meet absolute strangers. I was able to stalk their profiles and  more importantly , they were able to stalk mine.

I don’t know why, but I felt much better knowing that most members of my group were able to see that I was plus size BEFORE our first meeting in the hotel.

Plus Size Friendly Group Travel Tours: On Your Trip

Remember to go at your own pace.

Once you’ve met your group and started your trip, your adventure will start pretty much straight away. For me, the first stop was Philidelphia for a walking tour of the city.

Almost instantly I noticed I was much further behind the rest of the group but thankfully, they noticed and were soon walking at my pace instead of their own. I’ve read a rule somewhere that  you should never walk faster than the slowest member of your group  and I honestly think this is perfect when it comes to group travel.

There was one instance that I remember in New Orleans where I had to let my tour guide know that everyone was walking too fast and because of that, she slowed down to walk with me. The important part was that I spoke up and let people know I was struggling.

In most cases, people were walking in groups and getting to know each other, so the pace you walked at wasn’t important.

Know Your Limits And Don’t Push Yourself

Another important thing to bear in mind when on a group travel tour is that you HAVE to know your limits. I found myself reaching my limits on several occasions and when I did, I would take a short break.

Whether that meant staying behind at the campsite or sitting down in a nearby park for an hour or so, I didn’t want to push myself to do more than I could manage.

One of my favourite stories  (and simultaneously my least favourite)  from my trip with Trek America was from the second day. We had a bike tour of Washington DC included in the price of our tour and knowing that I am *okay* when it comes to cycling I was looking forward to a morning of riding through the city.

The first few stops were okay and with stops in between, I thought it would be a breeze.  How wrong was I?

After we had seen the monument and the Capitol building we had to cycle down a road that was made up of gravel. It was difficult to cycle at a slow pace so I was going as fast as I could to avoid falling over. Whilst doing this, I pushed myself too hard and my knee decided to lock into place.

I had to stop and once they realised, my tour leader came back to check if I was okay. I said I couldn’t go any further and after admitting defeat, I started to walk back to the rental shop.

As we came to a crossroads I was starting to feel a little better and I knew that turning left would mean going back to the rental shop but if I was to turn right, I could meet the rest of the group at the Lincoln Memorial. Feeling up for the challenge, I decided to turn right and meet everyone at the final stop.  After all, I couldn’t go all the way to DC and not see Lincoln, right?

It was a good 20 minutes before they arrived and because of my determination, I was able to finish the tour with everyone else.

I missed a couple of spots and DEFINITELY struggled on the journey back but honestly,  I’m proud of myself for carrying on.

Take Advantage Of Long Travel Days

Depending on where you’re travelling you might find that you have a few long travel days ahead of you. Our longest was 8 hours and to be honest, it went super quick.

One of the best things about travel days, of course, is that it is a chance to rest. With just a couple of stops along the way, travel days are actually pretty chilled out. You can catch up on sleep, read a book or spend your time staring out of the window as you pass through incredible places.  If I had just one tip to give you, it would definitely be to make the most out of the time you have to chill.

Make Sure You’re Taking Time For Yourself

Being with the same group of people for long periods of time can be incredibly difficult and if you like time to yourself, you need to be sure you’re taking it whenever you get the chance. Whether that means exploring one of the destinations on your own or spending an evening in your room, you gotta do whatever it takes to keep yourself sane.  Seriously .

If You’re Travelling Long Distance, Find A Seat That You Find Comfortable (People WILL Understand)

Another small detail that I worried about when booking my trip was whether or not I would be able to find a place in the van that I found comfortable. Knowing that our tour was fully booked meant that each and every seat would need to be filled.

Thankfully, there were two seats that were positioned on their own and both of them were pretty comfortable for me to sit in without feeling like I was squashing everyone else.

Although I didn’t sit there every time, I did speak to those in the group to ask if I could sit there for long journeys, as these were the ones I knew I would struggle with. Obviously, they were all incredibly understanding, making the journeys so much more comfortable than I imagined they would be.

If Something Is Making You Uncomfortable, Speak To Your Tour Leader As Soon As You Can

If you come across something that is making you feel uncomfortable, you need to ensure you’re speaking to your tour leader as soon as you possibly can. If they don’t know that you’re struggling, chances are they’re not going to be able to fix your issue.

Whether you’re struggling with the long journeys or you can’t keep up with the walking pace, the sooner you speak up the better.

Be Yourself & Make Incredible Memories

Finally, in terms of being on your trip, you need to be yourself and make incredible memories.

Although I should never feel this way I often feel as though people will disregard me because of my size but the only thing you can do is be true to yourself.  If people don’t like you, that’s their problem.

I loved every single person in my group and I found that I had the best possible time I could.

Plus Size Friendly Group Travel Tours: After Your Trip

If you had any concerns, make sure you’re voicing them.

Plus size travel still has a long way to go and in most cases, it’s because companies just don’t understand the changes they have to make. If you notice something on your trip or you felt you had lots of concerns when it came to accessibility, you need to be sure you’re following up with them afterwards.

We were given the chance to fill out a survey and if given the chance to do so, you should definitely have your say.  You never know, you could help shape the future of the travel industry.

50-Plus Travel Tours & Travel Guide

50-Plus Travel Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Traveling in your 50s can be very rewarding, especially today when travel has become easily accessible. Destinations that once seemed too remote and exotic to visit, particularly for folks over 50 — from the jungles of Costa Rica to the mountains of Bhutan , from the plains of East Africa to the icy waters of Antarctica — are now just a plane, train, or boat ride away.

With a dizzying number of travel opportunities, planning a trip can seem overwhelming. Airline routes, fares, and travel costs have become more complex, while the abundance of online advice can add to the confusion.

Independent travel, in general, can sometimes become more troublesome than it's worth — mainly when you have limited time to plan for a trip that may take you far away and last a week or longer.

However, joining a travel group for adults over 50 offers a solution, providing curated experiences and expert guidance to simplify the process and ensure memorable journeys without the hassle of booking your own trip and handling all the logistics yourself.

A Travel Group for Adults Over 50 Can Be the Best Solution

Adults over 50 are typically in a unique position where they have more time and resources to invest in their passion and curiosity to see the world. They also value the expertise and convenience provided by professional tour operators .

Travel groups for adults over 50 offer a tailored solution for mature adventurers seeking enriching experiences.

Today, tour companies are meeting the needs of over 50 travelers by offering personalized vacations with amenities like accessible accommodations, leisurely-paced itineraries, and knowledgeable guides.

From African safaris to treks to Machu Picchu , river cruises through Europe or Southeast Asia, small ship expeditions to the Galapagos , or culture-minded trips to Greece , Turkey , Italy , or Egypt , these tours cater to diverse interests.

Similarly, North America's national parks and archaeological treasures in Mexico and Central America beckon 50-plus travelers. With expert guidance and diverse adventures, over 50 travel tours create lasting memories without the hassle of planning every detail.

Top Travel Activities for People Over 50

In 2023, the number of leisure travelers increased by 22%, primarily driven by Generation X and Millennials. However, Baby Boomers spend the most on leisure travel (around $2,387 per capita). They have more money to spend on more luxurious experiences, and they are treating themselves!

Among the top over-50 travel trends are bucket-list trips — summer vacations, weekend getaways, international vacations, domestic trips, and heritage travel. Most 50-plus travel enthusiasts desire experiential travel.

Most travelers expect over 50 travel groups to offer immersive, expert-led tours with small group sizes- anything but sedentary — the tour operators have been quick to discover.

To that end, tour companies focusing on the 50-plus age group offer hands-on learning and workshops, locally guided tours, and behind-the-scenes sightseeing, from art-history tours in Italy to culinary tours in Thailand .

With more time for travel, over 50 travel tours are usually longer — typically a week or more — allowing more time to unplug and really engage in their destination.

Cruises for Adults Over 50

Cruises are popular among travelers in their 50s, offering convenience and accessibility to remote destinations. Traveling by ship eliminates the hassle of changing accommodations and dining arrangements. It is ideal for senior travelers over 50 seeking stress-free travel and meeting like-minded people on relatively longer trips.

Discover the breathtaking fjords of Norway or the vibrant islands of the Caribbean from the comfort of a cruise ship. Alternatively, explore Eastern Europe on a river cruise down the Danube or immerse yourself in the treasures of Egypt along the Nile .

Whether on the open seas or peaceful rivers, cruise adventures cater to the diverse interests of travel groups for adults over 50, ensuring unforgettable experiences.

Adventure Travel Groups for Adults Over 50

Over 50 travel groups embrace soft travel adventures. From hiking and cycling to birdwatching , they seek experiences blending physical activity with exploration.

Rather than opting for leisurely pursuits, couples and single travelers in their 50s prefer active sightseeing over traditional sightseeing tours, such as guided glacier walks in Iceland or cycling through Catalan villages. These walking and trekking activities provide a unique way to discover destinations while staying active.

Despite their adventurous spirit, over 50 travel enthusiasts appreciate comfort and luxury. Active vacations tailored for this age group offer a balance of adventure and relaxation, such as river cruising along the Danube in a state-of-the-art ship with daytime biking and walking tours through Austria's wine country.

That's the beauty of over 50 trips — they can be as active as you want, with various excursions and levels available.

Travel Groups for Singles Over 50

Solo travel among the 50-plus demographic is on the rise, offering mature travelers the chance to explore the world at their own pace. Safety and affordability are key considerations for those traveling alone when selecting destinations.

Travel groups for singles over 50 usually include places where travelers can immerse themselves in history and culture while connecting with like-minded individuals. Destinations offering opportunities like river cruises , soft adventure tours, walking tours, and cycling tours are popular.

Fortunately, many tour companies have eliminated single supplement fees, making traveling solo more accessible than ever. Guided tours and cruises designed exclusively for single travel provide ample opportunities to connect with other like-minded people in the group.

While women make up the majority of single over 50 travelers, both men and women value authentic local experiences and the security of small-group guided tours. These guided tours perfectly balance group activities and free time for independent exploration.

Travel Groups for Couples Over 50

For couples over 50, travel presents an opportunity to reconnect, explore new travel destinations, and create lasting memories together. With grown-up children and retirement on the horizon, many couples are eager to embark on discovery tours and adventure pursuits tailored to their interests and preferences.

Travel groups for couples over 50 offer a range of options, from romantic getaways to cultural immersions and outdoor adventures. Whether it's a leisurely river cruise along Europe's historic waterways or a thrilling safari in Africa, there's something to suit every couple's taste.

These guided tours provide the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, with expert guides leading the way and taking care of all the details. Couples can enjoy shared experiences while also having the freedom to pursue individual interests during free time.

Whether seeking romance, adventure, or cultural enrichment, travel groups for couples over 50 offer the ideal setting to bond and create cherished memories.

Relatively Relaxed Over 50 Travel Tours

Travel groups for adults over 50 offer a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation. While still adventurous, these tours prioritize comfort and leisure, ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable journey.

With a focus on comfortable accommodations, authentic local cuisine, and convenient transportation, over 50 travel groups provide a more relaxed pace, allowing travelers to savor each destination fully.

Instead of strenuous activities, these itineraries may include opportunities for photography , fishing, wine tasting , or immersive cultural experiences.

At Travelstride, we understand the unique needs of travelers over 50, and our curated tours will help you find the perfect tour that aligns with your interests and preferences. , fishing, or may allow extra time for cultural immersion.

Top Destinations for Over 50 Travel Groups

Europe tops the chart for favorite destinations for 50-plus travel, particularly England , Italy , and France . Within the U.S. , 50-plus travelers primarily head to the southern and western states, with Florida, California, and New York being the top three most popular domestic destinations.

Older travelers also head to the Caribbean, Asia , and the Middle East . South American tours are in, too, as new upscale tour operators introduce a range of experiences beyond Machu Picchu (think hiking in Patagonia and Colombia coffee tours).

Small group guided tours, or river cruises, are a comfortable, safe way to explore new destinations — say, Asia or the Middle East — where cuisine, culture, and landscapes may be new and different.

Traveling with a reputable tour company in these regions allows over 50 travelers to immerse themselves in an entirely new and fascinating destination, yet with the safety net of guides who know their way around.

No matter where your wanderlust takes you, over 50 tour packages await you. From Egyptian pyramids and Petra to cycling in Japan to snorkeling in Belize, 50-plus travel is immersive, experiential, and gratifying.

Physical Requirements For Tourists Over 50

Understanding the physical requirements of your desired tour is crucial for preparing for the trip and managing expectations.

On Travelstride, tours are categorized into five primary physical levels: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, Strenuous, and Extreme, providing clarity on the level of activity involved. This knowledge not only ensures you can fully enjoy your vacation but also helps alleviate stress by informing your packing decisions.

For instance, for walking tours rated as "Easy," you may pack extra walking clothes. In contrast, river cruises ("Very Easy") allow for indulgent packing with the convenience of only unpacking once.

Travel groups for adults over 50 typically sport Moderate and Easy range, which include cruises and guided tours with half-day walking, and some may consist of adventurous pursuits like kayaking or camel riding .

Those with limited mobility may favor over 50 tour groups rated Very Easy, such as river cruises and train journeys. Remember to verify wheelchair accessibility with the tour company to ensure the trip is right for you.

ABOUT GARTH BROOKS

Garth Brooks just completed the three and a half year long Stadium Tour. It drew an average of more than 95 thousand people in each city it played and was seen by a cumulative audience of nearly three-million people. The tour ended in September when Garth played the fifth sold-out concert at Dublin, Ireland’s Croke Park. The five concerts were seen by over 400-thousand people. Also in September, Garth was honored with the Kris Kristofferson Lifetime Achievement Award at the NSAI’s Nashville Songwriter Awards, held at the Ryman Auditorium.

On sale now is “The Anthology, Part II: The Next Five Years.” In this Anthology, Garth picks up where he left off in “The Anthology, Part I: The First Five Years,” telling his story in his own words and offering fascinating insights to his career and personal life from 1996-2001.

In May 2021, Garth Brooks was one of five artists to receive one of the most prestigious honors an artist can receive, The Kennedy Center Honor. Garth is the first-ever seven-time recipient of the CMA Entertainer of the Year honor. Brooks is the first and only artist in history to receive nine Diamond Awards for the now nine diamond-certified albums at over 10 million album sales each. He remains the #1-selling solo artist in U.S. history, certified by the RIAA with 157 million album sales. Last year, he was awarded Country Touring Artist of the Decade at the 2021 Pollstar Awards. In March 2020, Garth received the esteemed Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The event aired on PBS. He has received every accolade the recording industry can bestow on an artist.

In November 2020, just after receiving the Billboard Music Icon Award, Garth released two new albums, his 12th studio album, “FUN” and live album “Triple Live Deluxe.”

After the success of “Garth & Trisha Live!” during prime time on CBS in April 2020, CBS also aired “Garth & Trisha Live! A Holiday Concert Event,” in December. Both specials featured Garth and Trisha taking song requests through Facebook, live from their studio, Allentown, in Nashville.

In November of 2019, A&E aired “Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On,” over two consecutive nights. Part of their esteemed ‘Biography’ franchise, the documentary offered an intimate look at Garth’s life as a musician and father over his entire career.

In January 2020, Billboard announced that Garth Brooks was the first artist to make it on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and now 20s. Garth debuted “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” in 1989. Now, with “Dive Bar,” a duet he sang with Blake Shelton, he makes his appearance on the list in 2020. The single inspired a DIVE BAR tour to dive bars in country music capitals around the country which will continue its run of stops through 2022.

Last year, Garth went vinyl with his meticulously-curated vinyl package, LEGACY. This career-defining collection includes No Fences, The Chase, In Pieces, Fresh Horses and Triple Live, plus CDs with bonus tracks for a total of 7 vinyl albums and 7 CDs in each edition.

In 2017, Garth finished the three-and-a-half-year long Garth Brooks World Tour with Trisha Yearwood. The tour sold over 6.3 million tickets, making it the biggest North American tour in history and the biggest American tour in the world.

Garth also has Inside Studio G, a weekly Facebook Live series. It airs every Monday on Garth’s Facebook page at 7 p.m. ET.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

ABOUT GARTH BROOKS Garth Brooks just completed the three-and-a-half-year-long Stadium Tour. It drew an average of more than 95,000 people in each city it played and was seen by a cumulative audience of nearly three million people. The tour ended in September when Garth played the fifth sold-out concert at Dublin, Ireland’s Croke Park. The five concerts were seen by over 400,000 people. Also in September, Garth was honored with the Kris Kristofferson Lifetime Achievement Award at the NSAI's Nashville Songwriter Awards, held at the Ryman Auditorium.   On sale now is The Anthology, Part II: The Next Five Years . In this anthology, Garth picks up where he left off in The Anthology, Part I: The First Five Years , telling his story in his own words and offering fascinating insights to his career and personal life from 1996-2001. In November 2020, just after receiving the Billboard Music Icon Award, Garth released two new albums, his 12th studio album, FUN and live album Triple Live Deluxe . After the success of "Garth & Trisha Live!" during prime time on CBS in April 2020, CBS also aired "Garth & Trisha Live! A Holiday Concert Event," in December. Both specials featured Garth and Trisha taking song requests through Facebook, live from their studio, Allentown, in Nashville. In November of 2019, A&E aired "Garth Brooks: The Road I'm On," over two consecutive nights. Part of their esteemed 'Biography' franchise, the documentary offered an intimate look at Garth's life as a musician and father over his entire career. In January 2020, Billboard announced that Garth Brooks was the first artist to make it on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and now 20s. Garth debuted "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)" in 1989. With "Dive Bar," a duet he sang with Blake Shelton, he made his appearance on the list in 2020. Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

No one rocks like The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger, band thrill on Hackney Diamonds Tour

plus 1 tours

HOUSTON − It’s not only stunning, but it's somewhat miraculous that more than 60 years after their first tour, the Rolling Stones are still filling stadiums.

It’s even more head-spinning to realize that along with their treasured hits, the Rolling Stones are enhancing their set list with a trio of songs from last year’s well-received “Hackney Diamonds” – their first album of original material in 18 years and the impetus for this 16-city tour.

We’d call it a victory lap, but frontman Mick Jagger is better suited for marathons.

At the kickoff Sunday at NRG Stadium in Houston, the core triumvirate of Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – along with their supporting cast of exceptional musicians and singers – hit the massive stage to the sounds of Richards’ slashing out the riff of, fittingly, “Start Me Up.”

Jagger, the nimble CEO of Stones Inc., peacocked in a silver shimmering jacket, his elastic legs a mere pedestal for his rotating torso.

Richards, still owning his disheveled pirate look with a knit cap and multicolored scarf dangling from his hip, and Wood, grinning continuously and occasionally scampering down the lengthy catwalk, retained their roles as faithful consiglieres.

There isn’t a patch of smooth facial skin among them (Jagger and Richards are 80 and Wood is 76). But with the energy to plow through an 18-song, two-hour set – yes, shorter than previous Stones shows, but still fulfilling – no one is looking to crown them pageant winners.

While the band needed a couple of songs to fully find their groove – the striding cadence of a reworked “Get Off Of My Cloud” and a ramshackle “Rocks Off” felt curious rather than robust – Jagger compensated with his riveting presence and still-supple vocals.

Along with the “Hackney Diamonds” songs plucked for their major live debuts (the band played a few of the new tracks at an intimate New York club gig in October ), including the feisty “ Angry ” and encore of gospelized “ Sweet Sounds of Heaven ,” the 1966 tune “ Out of Time ” also received its U.S. debut. The band revived it last year during some performances for the overseas Sixty tour.

“I don’t think you really knew it, but you got to know it,” Jagger said with a smile after leading the nearly full stadium through the arm-waving chorus.

As typical for a Rolling Stones production, the stage ran the width of the stadium, blanketed with screens beaming images of the band with magnificent clarity. Close-ups of drummer Steve Jordan, who assumed rhythm duties after the death of original drummer Charlie Watts in 2021, joyfully thundering through the gem “ Paint It, Black ” and birthday boy Chuck Leavell ripping out a fleet-fingered solo on his Yamaha keyboard on “Honky Tonk Women” offered fans a peek at the magic happening a few feet behind Jagger and Co.

During the always-visceral “ Sympathy for the Devil ,” as serpents and fire crawled across the screens, Jagger prowled through the sinister groove, augmented by percussion provided by background vocalist Bernard Fowler and chunky bass lines from Darryl Jones.

Keyboardist Matt Clifford added French horn to “ You Can’t Always Get What You Want ” as Jagger, playing an acoustic guitar, strolled through the message of acquiescence that escalated into a gospel throwdown.

The horn duo of Karl Denson and Tim Ries coated many familiar anthems – “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Miss You” among them – with their rich brass sounds. But, as fans have realized over the decades, the ominous “Gimme Shelter” remains a centerpiece of any Rolling Stones concert, and Jagger has a new onstage playmate in powerhouse background vocalist Chanel Haynes.

The woman who starred as Tina Turner in the West End musical of Turner’s life and officially became part of the band last year steamrolled through “Gimme Shelter” with a voice blaring attitude and vigor. As she and Jagger strolled the catwalk, sharing vocals and chemistry, Jagger wisely backed off a couple of times, allowing Haynes to unleash her theatrical verve.

But this is still Jagger’s circus, and whether he’s bobbing like a jittery prizefighter or wiggling his shoulders like the world’s most slender Chippendales dancer, he is an octogenarian who captivates.

The band has enlisted various openers throughout the tour. In Houston, blues-rock guitar ace – and Texas native – Gary Clark Jr. landed the opening-night slot and for 45 minutes enchanted the mostly full stadium.

With a large band – five musicians, three background vocalists – behind him, Clark was the epitome of cool in dark shades and a bandanna as he took the stage with “Maktub” from his recently released fourth album, “JPEG Raw.”

Clark is a big name for an opener (then again, it is the Rolling Stones) and he used his time well with massive licks on the crunch rockers “Bright Lights” and “This is Who We Are,” with singer Naala joining him.

The soul-inflected “Feed the Babies” seared as a set highlight as the singer/guitarist displayed sizzling playing and a breezy vibe for the crowd.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds: Our long-shot pick eyes his second PGA Tour win

C.T. Pan is our long-shot pick to win in Texas.

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

The PGA Tour returns to Texas and to a traditional tournament format with this week’s 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and we’re picking a long shot who nearly took home the title last year. Here’s our long-shot pick, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, betting favorites and everything else you need to know.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds: Long-shot bet

For this week’s newly named CJ Cup Byron Nelson, we’re picking PGA Tour veteran C.T. Pan to beat the odds and come out on top. Pan’s odds to win to start the week sit at +10000.

Pan is a former top-50 golfer in the world, capable of winning any time he tees it up. He proved that at the 2019 RBC Heritage , which he won to earn his only Tour victory.

Tiger Woods reacts to his shot at the Masters

Tour Confidential: U.S. Ryder Cup captain, PGA Tour payouts, Zurich format

So far this season, Pan has only managed one top 10, but it was a good one: a T3-finish at the Mexico Open. Most intriguingly for our purposes is the fact that Pan finished solo 4th at last year’s Byron Nelson, just two shots short of winner Jason Day’s 23-under total.

If you put $10 on Pan to win and he comes through, you’ll earn $1,000. For insurance, consider placing additional small bets on Pan to finish top 10 and top 20.

Looking for more long-shot bets for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson? This week’s honorable mentions are Adam Schenk (+5000) and Kevin Yu (+9000).

CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds: The favorites

Leading the Byron Nelson field as the pre-tournament betting favorite is three-time major champion Jordan Spieth , who comes into the week with +1400 odds.

He’s followed by Alex Noren at +1800, and three players are tied at +2000, including Adam Scott , Si Woo Kim and defending champion Jason Day .

You can see the top 15 in CJ Cup Byron Nelson betting odds as of Monday morning below or head over to BetMGM to see the full list of odds and bets for this week.

A brief guide to all the MICHELIN Key hotels in Chicago.

Travel Hotels Chicago MICHELIN Keys

plus 1 tours

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide announced its very first Key hotels in the United States — a brand new distinction recognizing the most outstanding hotels in the country. We're thrilled to report that in Chicago, eight hotels earned at least One Key. Of those, half make their home in the kinds of historic buildings that give this city its well-earned reputation as one of the most architecturally distinguished cities in the country. Follow Michigan Avenue north from the heart of the Loop to the Gold Coast and you’ll pass within two blocks of all but one of them. The Chicago Athletic Association sits within a Venetian Gothic landmark. The Gwen makes its home in a storied 1929 Art Deco skyscraper. The Pendry sets up shop in the masterpiece that is the 1929 Art Deco Carbide & Carbon Building. And the lower floors of the Viceroy make use of the meticulously-preserved, 1920s-vintage Cedar Hotel. There are Key hotels too in newer builds, among them the Peninsula (with uniformed bellboys and staffers who seem to know the name of each individual guest) and the Waldorf Astoria , its lobby a marble marvel. Below, explore the map and scroll down for more about each of the MICHELIN Guide’s eight hotels in Chicago.
