So without further ado, let's dive in!

When is Will & Harper coming to Netflix?

Netflix

The eagerly awaited documentary, Will & Harper , described as "a movie about the power of friendship and acceptance," has yet to receive an official release date on Netflix.

The suspense surrounding its debut is pretty understandable, given the recent announcement of Netflix's acquisition, rumored to be a substantial eight-figure deal, at the beginning of February 2024.

As a result, fans will need to exercise a bit more patience, but fear not -- Will & Harper is anticipated to hit the streaming platform later this year. Make sure to check back for any news or updates on when exactly Will & Harper will be available on Netflix!

What have the filmmakers said about Will & Harper?

Josh Greenbaum, Harper Steele, Will Ferrell

Will & Harper has been highly praised by critics for its portrayal of friendship and the transgender experience. But what have the filmmakers said about the upcoming documentary?

Lucky for us, Netflix recently shared a direct quote from them, which showed their excitement for the documentary's warm reception and its acquisition by the streaming giant. The filmmakers expressed their happiness , stating:

"We are thrilled about how audiences received the movie with open arms at Sundance. It’s a movie about the power of friendship and acceptance, that we hope can help shift the culture, and so we are excited to have a partner in Netflix that has the ability to reach the largest possible audience worldwide." -  Netflix

The brains behind this gem include Rafael Marmor, Will Ferrell, and Jessica Elbaum from Gloria Sanchez Productions, alongside Josh Greenbaum and Christopher Leggett as Producers. The Executive Producers lineup boasts the talents of Justin Baldoni, Andrew Calof, Jamey Heath, and Steve Sarowitz from Wayfarer Studios. Samantha Apfel and Carolina Barlow also join the production as co-producers.

What has Will Ferrell said about the documentary?

Amidst the glitz and glamour of the Sundance Film Festival, Will Ferrell and Harper Steele, took a pit stop at The Hollywood Reporter's studios to spill the beans on their latest cinematic venture, Will & Harper. During the interview, the actor and former SNL writer dive into the nitty-gritty of their cross-country escapade, sharing anecdotes about the colorful characters they encountered along the way.

They also plunge into the behind-the-scenes magic of how this documentary came to life. Will Ferrell, in his signature wit, revealed that while he didn't want to "exploit" his friendship with Steele, he saw this journey as a "wonderful way to explore" the intricacies of her transition. The documentary becomes a platform for Ferrell to candidly "ask all the questions" bubbling within him about his friend's new way of life.

In Will & Harper , Two Friends Talk

Portrait of Bilge Ebiri

One of the most ecstatic responses I’ve ever seen at Sundance came at the world premiere of the documentary Will & Harper , Josh Greenbaum’s film about a cross-country road trip taken by Will Ferrell and his trans best friend Harper Steele. Warm receptions are often guaranteed for movie stars and progressive causes at Sundance, but one can usually tell when the applause is dutiful and when it’s genuine. In this case, the standing ovation was immediate and explosive. The festival audience clearly ate this one up, in part because Will & Harper also happens to be a very funny movie about two comedians stuck on a road trip together.

Ferrell and Steele both started at the same time on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s — one as an actor, the other as a writer — long before Steele transitioned at the age of 61. Steele quickly became someone who could write best to Ferrell’s strengths (she remembers that in Ferrell’s first season many on the SNL staff didn’t find him funny) and was later named head writer of the show, before departing in 2008 to work for Ferrell’s comedy outlet Funny or Die. (She also wrote or co-wrote several of the actor’s films, including my beloved Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga .) As Ferrell tells it, the Iowa-born Steele was something of a tough guy at the time, someone who loved drinking “shitty beer” and hitch-hiking and road tripping across the country. And while Harper acknowledges that “there was this other persona that I don’t much like anymore,” she also insists she hasn’t changed that much. “I was always Harper Steele,” she says. “Will was always friends with Harper Steele.” And the old shit-kicker hasn’t entirely gone away. “Instead of an asshole, I’ll be a bitch,” she quips.

The idea for the documentary grew out of Ferrell’s desire to accompany Steele on her first trip across the country after transitioning. She still loves country roads and dive bars and highway diners. “I just don’t know if it loves me back now,” she admits. “I don’t know if I can go to those same places as Harper.” These kinds of serious insights are often accompanied by funnier observations. “When I road tripped as a guy, I brought two t-shirts, three underwears, and one pair of jeans,” Steele says. Things have changed, she notes, as the camera cuts to an entire suitcase full of women’s shoes. Early in the film, talking to Steele’s kids about whether they fear for her safety out on the road, Ferrell asks, “Does it help that I do jujitsu? I go twice a month.”

Greenbaum, who directed 2021’s Barb & Star Go to Vista del Mar and last year’s Strays , clearly has a feel for buddy comedies and road movies. There are repeated bits involving the many different varieties of Pringles, and Will Ferrell’s petulant desire to eat at Dunkin’ Donuts. Their old SNL chums show up at a few points. They make a point of giving Lorne Michaels an uncomfortably long hug. They ask Kristen Wiig to compose a theme song for them: “Something up-tempo, jazzy and fun, but it also has to make you cry, and with a little twang.” They then spend the rest of the movie trying to get her back on the phone.

Their itinerary is designed to let Steele re-experience a world she used to know so well. At a Pacers game, she notes that she was once another member of the army of bros in the stands. She says she doesn’t know how those folks will see her now, but she also adds that she doesn’t know how she’ll see herself. Later, as Steele enters an Oklahoma bar festooned with Trump signs and Confederate flags, Ferrell waits outside, ready to pounce if the situation gets dangerous. Lo and behold, the crowded bar quickly embraces Harper Steele. They’re all toasting each other and doing shots by the time Ferrell joins them, leading to a whole host of double takes. “The joke’s on me,” Steele says afterwards. “I’m not afraid of these people. I’m afraid of being myself.”

The conversations the two have on their trip are admirably frank. They talk about top and bottom surgery, misgendering, body dysmorphia, and the fears Harper had before coming out. These exchanges never feel staged, or obligatory. Steele tells Ferrell that he’s free to ask her all the things that he might otherwise be afraid to ask a trans person, and Ferell does so, clumsily but sweetly. But he also seems genuinely terrified to learn that his best friend for all these years was in so much pain that she was contemplating suicide. The film’s most powerful achievement is perhaps also its most basic: the simple sight of two friends talking, openly and gently, about all the things on their minds.

Steele admits she has a lot of privilege, and that having a good friend like Ferrell accompanying her on this trip is one of them. He attracts more attention than she does, although this does backfire at one point in Texas, when he attempts to eat a massive steak dressed as Sherlock Holmes (don’t ask) and they suddenly find dozens of cellphones creepily pointed at them. The incident also leads to news reports and torrents of grossly cruel transphobic tweets hurled in their direction.

While the film mostly presents ordinary people as accepting, tolerant, and non-judgmental, it does acknowledge the dangers that trans people regularly face. At the Pacers game, Ferrell chats with Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, who seems polite enough when the actor explains that he’s accompanying his friend on her first road-trip post-transition. Later, they look up Holcomb online and discover that the governor has signed a law banning gender-affirming care. It’s just one rebuke in a litany of ongoing cases around the country. Indeed, just three days before Park City itself cheered on Will & Harper , the Utah State Legislature passed an anti-trans bathroom law .

Will & Harper is in many senses a very conventional picture. The soundtrack accompanying them on their trip is pretty on-the-nose. “Shelter from the Storm,” “America,” “The Weight,” and “Truck Drivin’ Son of a Gun” all make appearances, as does “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” for the obligatory Vegas interlude. At their post-screening Q&A, Steele and Ferrell recalled that when they first decided to do the film, they tried to think of comic set-ups and situations in advance, before realizing that the best way to approach such a project was just to let events take their course. But the duo’s journey does have a recognizable narrative shape, leading towards a not-entirely unexpected emotional climax. The film’s familiarity may well be part of its design. It clearly wants to help change hearts and minds, and find purchase with audiences that would otherwise avoid a movie with a subject like this. Judging by the rapturous Sundance response, it has a decent shot.

Will Ferrell’s Road Trip Movie With His Trans Best Friend Will Save Lives

ON THE ROAD

When his friend of 30 years came out as transgender, Ferrell suggested they drive across the country together. “Will & Harper” is the sensational documentary about that journey.

Will Ferrell and Harper Steele in Will & Harper

PARK CITY, Utah— Will Ferrell and his dear friend Harper Steele began working at Saturday Night Live the same season, nearly 30 years ago.

Ferrell was cast as a performer, and Steele was hired as a writer. The early buzz on Ferrell was that he was a “dud,” Steele says. But Steele understood the now- SNL legend’s peculiar gifts, writing many of Ferrell’s most famous sketches, the beginning of a creative partnership and deep friendship that has lasted decades and bled over into Ferrell’s movie career. The most ridiculous, head-scratching projects he’s acted in, Ferrell says—an Icelandic pop star in Eurovision Song Contest ; Lifetime movie A Deadly Adoption ; Casa de mi padre , a comedy that is entirely in Spanish—Steele was behind.

It’s their penchant for collaborating on surprising, out-of-left-field projects that took the friends to the Sundance Film Festival , where Will & Harper had its world premiere Monday night. The screening was soundtracked by an audience duet of roof-shaking laughter and silent, moved sobs—culminating in multiple standing ovations that left the Anchorman star wiping away his own tears on stage. It’s common to feel a certain electricity when a film plays well at a festival. What happened in the auditorium Monday night felt more like a kinetic warmth, as if loveliness could be somehow tangible.

It’s not just that the project is brave and characteristically unusual. It’s that—and please do your best to strip this upcoming phrase from all of its corny, eye-rolling earnestness—the film is an endeavor that could change and even save lives.

Ferrell and Steele hadn’t seen each other in a while because of COVID when, three summers ago, Steele wrote Ferrell an email with the subject line: “Here’s a Weird One.” In the email, Steele explained that she would be transitioning, identified as a transgender woman, and will now be going by Harper. She explained that it was something she’d felt needed to do for a long time, expressed the mixture of fear and joy she’s feeling, and hoped that Ferrell—and the other friends and family who received similar emails—would understand.

At the beginning of Will & Harper , Ferrell explains his shock, but also his immediate desire to assure Steele that he supported her and loved her. He had questions, of course. So, too, did Steele: Will he think of me and our friendship differently? Will he act differently toward me? Will he be too afraid to ask the questions that would continue to build their friendship?

The bridge they ended up building to sort through all of that ended up spanning coast to coast. They decided to go on a 17-day road trip together, from New York to Los Angeles.

Steele has always loved being on the road, relishing stops in small towns off the beaten path, making friends with strangers over drinks in seedy dive bars. She liked going to car races and greasy-spoon diners, pulling over to have a beer while sitting in a lawn chair on the side of the road or in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

After transitioning, she worried that she wouldn’t be able to do those things anymore. She was concerned about her safety, of course, in areas of the country where anti-trans legislation is being passed and transphobic rhetoric and violence is an alarming concern. But even more at peace as herself than ever, there was discomfort; would her own insecurity about not being accepted in these places be the biggest hurdle to returning to them?

There was one sort of out-there solution to those concerns: What if one of the biggest movie stars in the world went on the journey with her?

Directed by Josh Greenbaum (who also directed the deliciously bonkers Kristen Wiig comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar , for a sense of comedic sensibility), Will & Harper works on multiple pillars.

Ferrell and Steele have three decades of crackling, familiar chemistry when it comes to their senses of humor, and they have such an ingrained history that serious conversations about the transition and how they both feel about it unfolded with a surprising, very intimate honesty and vulnerability.

The film is a travelog illuminating where different parts of the country are when it comes to acceptance or having an empathetic curiosity about trans people.

Several of the signposts on that route are with people Steele has known and loved for years, starting in New York with having breakfast with her children—whose wisdom and emotional intelligence is astounding—and drinks at 30 Rock with SNL buddies Tina Fey, Seth Meyers, Paula Pell, Tim Meadows, and Colin Jost. As they travel across time zones, they stay with her sister, Eleanor, in Iowa, whose greatest sorrow after receiving Steele’s email was being clued into the pain that she was in for so long. They visit with Will Forte in New Mexico for a toast to a new beginning, and look back on what they learned about each other when they meet up with Molly Shannon in Los Angeles.

It’s heartwarming to see the embrace they’ve all given Steele. But what about the unfamiliar people? The ones who don’t know her. Who could clock her as trans. Who could bully her. Who could fling slurs at her, or worse.

In many places where one might think Steele would be ostracized, she’s accepted, in fact often with such grace that you might question your own prejudices. (Once you’re done crying at the beautiful scenes and exchanges.) In other places—when Ferrell and Steele sit in court seats at Indiana Pacers game, or when they have dinner at a raucous Texas steak house—the reception is so hateful they can feel it, and, soon, see it, when insults aimed at Steele and outrage that Ferrell would be seen with her flood social media and conservative websites.

Revealing that spectrum of experiences, though, is in some ways the point of the whole exercise. What was unexpected, at least for me, was how powerful the conversations between Ferrell and Steele would be.

Steele gave Ferrell permission to ask her anything he wanted to know about transitioning, with no concerns for propriety or offense. The result is that Will & Harper , because of those discussions, serves as a bit of Trans 101.

They talked about everything that it can sometimes, and rightfully, be considered inappropriate to discuss: how long Steele felt this way; whether she regretted not doing it sooner; her breast implants; considering bottom surgery; if it felt weird to encounter an old friend now a transitioned person; her voice; wanting to pass; sex and dating, suicidal thoughts and depression; feeling pretty—or sometimes not. Ferrell is never condescending, and often is moved to tears over his friend’s candor about how she’s felt over the years.

The film is never shy about the fact that Steele may be greeted with such friendliness at places because Ricky Bobby himself is alongside her and people are starstruck. It’s a privilege that she acknowledges, and it’s an opportunity—both for his friend and potential audiences—that Ferrell treats with pride and responsibility.

Photo still of Will Ferrell and Harper Steele in Will & Harper

Will Ferrell and Harper Steele in Will & Harper

After the credits rolled, the audience stopped crying, and the second standing ovation dissipated, Steele told the crowd that it took a few months for her to agree to the idea of this road trip documentary.

“Bills were being passed all over the country,” Steele said. “It was looking—it still is looking quite awful. It’s ramping up. So I have this friend—this is my privilege—I have this friend whose movies appeal very broadly to a lot of people. That was the deciding factor. I can abuse this relationship for the good [of the trans community]. I still don’t know if Will knows what he did.”

After watching the film and hearing her speak about it Monday night, it’s obvious that Steele was joking. The movie doesn’t have distribution yet, but conversations after the screening skipped over how quickly it would get picked up to start guessing for how much. It’s incredibly entertaining, and emotional in a way that only a documentary made with such authentic, all-in intention could be.

Ferrell will get eyeballs on this movie, and, it must be said, has already faced backlash for doing so, even before it’s been released. That attention—brace yourself for round two of triteness—will be powerful, given the humanity and enlightenment the film boasts; yes, it could save lives.

Netflix Buys Will Ferrell’s Sundance Doc ‘Will & Harper,’ About Road Trip With Trans Best Friend

Will Ferrell and Harper Steele appear in Will & Harper

“Will & Harper,” a heartfelt and heartbreaking documentary about Will Ferrell ‘s cross-country road trip with his best friend Harper Steele, who recently came out as transgender, sold to Netflix after its Sundance Film Festival debut. Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed, but “Will & Harper” was drawing interest from several buyers.

The film, directed by “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” filmmaker Josh Greenbaum, was warmly embraced in Park City with two standing ovations after the credits rolled.

Ferrell and Steele were hired at “Saturday Night Live” — as a performer and writer, respectively — at the same time in the 1990s. Steele, who co-wrote “Eurovision Song Contest” and other Ferrell films, came out as a trans woman in 2022 at age 61. In “Will & Harper,” the duo drives from New York to California over 17 days, making pit stops at NBA games, dive bars, highway diners, dirt track races and other places where Steele hopes to feel more comfortable going since she transitioned.

Netflix has been very active when it comes to buying Sundance movies. As Variety first reported, it purchased “Daughters,” a documentary about a program that allows young girls to participate in a special dance with their incarcerated fathers. In the biggest deal of the festival, the streamer shelled out $17 million for the horror film “It’s What’s Inside.” It also purchased “Skywalkers,” a buzzy documentary that follows a couple Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus who are drawn together by their love for climbing tall buildings, as well as “Ibelin,” a non-fiction film about a Norwegian gamer named Mats Steen, who died of a degenerative muscle disease at the age of 25.

Variety ‘s chief film critic Peter Debruge praised “Will & Harper,” writing that “it can sound like a cliché to say that any given movie is what the world needs now, but ‘Will & Harper’ earns that distinction. Struggling to recognize her own beauty in a society that often seems determined to deny her identity altogether, Steele brings the trans experience down to earth.”

Ferrell  spoke to  Variety  prior to the premiere of “Will & Harper” and admitted that he had “zero knowledge” about the trans community before Steele came out.

“I had met trans people, but I didn’t have anyone personally in my life,” Ferrell said. “So this was all new territory for me. It’s a chance for us in the cis community to ask questions, listen and be there as a friend to discuss this journey.”

Ferrell produced the film along with Jessica Elbaum for his company, Gloria Sanchez. Greenbaum, Rafael Marmor and Christopher Leggett were also producers on the project. Justin Baldoni, Andrew Calof, Jamey Heath and Steve Sarowitz for Wayfarer Studios were executive producers. UTA Independent Film Group brokered the deal.

2. Street Food

Combining travel with food, this documentary series from the creators of Chef's table will probably leave you hungry after a few episodes. The first season concentrates on Asia, visiting Bangkok, Osaka, and Seoul, among other destinations.

The theme tying all of these locales together is, as you probably guessed from the name, the street food you can find there. While the focus is often on the food itself, the show also focuses on the local heroes who create it.

This is hands down the most fun you'll have watching a food and travel documentary. The way that Phil approaches new food, new places, and new people is a breath of fresh air.

As Phil says, "If you like a dish, go to the source." Get delighted, get amused, get amazed and definitely get hungry while somebody feeds Phil.

Not all of the best travel documentaries have to be about the beautiful and the serene. If you’re in the market for a slightly twisted travel story, Dark Tourist is for you. David Farrier, a New Zealand based filmmaker and journalist travels around the world looking for unusual and often morbid tourist spots across the world.

This documentary explores a new phenomenon called dark tourism. This is where tourists intentionally travel to places associated with death and destruction. A war-torn country? Sure. A dangerous border crossing? Why not. A quick trip around radioactive environments? Don’t mind if I do.

5. National Parks Adventure

The US National Parks Service is more than 100 years old. That’s more than a century of protecting natural wildernesses in the United States.

This breathtaking documentary by filmmaker Greg MacGillivray will make you want to go visit a national park right away. Between the beautiful montages is a story of three artists as they revisit Roosevelt and Muir's camping trip, where the Parks Service began.

6. Pedal the World

Some titles are artistic, hinting at a deeper meaning. Others are starkly literal. Pedal the World belongs in the second group. Why? This is a documentary following one man's trip around the world by bicycle.

That man is Felix Starck, who also happens to be the director of Expedition Happiness. If you enjoyed that documentary, you'll likely enjoy this one as well. Keep in mind that this is an earlier effort, so it may be a little rough around the edges compared to the newer movie.

This is a must watch for bicycle enthusiasts and anyone obsessed with world travel.

7. Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father

Father-son bonding is a different experience for everyone. When comedian Jack Whitehall was young, he and his father Michael never really bonded.

Now, Whitehall wants to bring that spark back by taking a gap year and traveling with his father. Watch as this comedian trades the stand-up stage (see the best stand-up comedy specials on Netflix ) for a tuk-tuk in Thailand.

What better way to spend time with your parent than by going on a trip. But what happens when you have a slightly grumpy father and you are the overly energetic one? Quite a blast, actually, Watch as this father-son team gets into accidents, goes to odd places, and attempts to open up to one another.

8. Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip

For most people, where you travel is the important part. For others, it's how you get there that matters. Car enthusiasts definitely fall into the latter group. If you count yourself among them, Paul Hollywood's Big Continental Road Trip should be next up in your Netflix queue.

This documentary follows the actor, baker, and part-time racing driver across a large swathe of Europe. The series sees Hollywood visit Italy, Germany, and France. In each hour-long episode, he chronicles the cars and culture of a given country.

If you're a fan of cars as well as the Great British Baking Show, don't miss this one.

9. Mountain

Feeling contemplative? Are you looking for a documentary that features breathtaking locations but takes a slower, more meditative approach? Mountain could be exactly what you're looking for.

Directed and produced by Jennifer Peedom, Mountain explores peaks around the world. Willem Dafoe narrates the film, occasionally reading passages from Robert Macfarlane's Mountains of the Mind.

Much like that book, the film examines the human fascination with mountains. Even if you never visit a mountain in your life, this film will give you a greater appreciation of them.

10. Night on Earth

Whether you're a night owl or you're afraid of the dark, night can a fascinating time. Night on Earth is a documentary in the style of Planet Earth that focuses on what happens at night across the world. Thanks to new camera technology, this is the best look at night you've probably ever seen.

Each episode has its own focus. The first episode follows predators and their prey, while other episodes touch on nighttime in the ocean or even cities. One episode even takes you behind the scenes to see how the crew captures such amazing footage.

Will Ferrell Harper Steele Documentary

‘Will & Harper,’ Will Ferrell’s Documentary About Road-Tripping With His Trans Best Friend, Will Head To Netflix

Nina Braca

Earlier this year, part-time Mattell CEO Will Ferrell premiered his new documentary Will & Harper at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie follows the Barbie actor and his longtime pal Harper who embark on a road trip after Harper comes out as trangender.

Will & Harper, directed by Josh Greenbaum, became a favorite at Sundance, with critics and fans praising the subject matter and message. It was announced this week that Netflix acquired the rights to the documentary , which follows the two pals as they enter a new phase in their friendship.

At the Sundance premiere, Steele expressed how important the film is for the trans community. “Bills were being passed all over the country,” Steele said at the screening, according to the Daily Beast . “It was looking — it still is looking quite awful. It’s ramping up. So I have this friend — this is my privilege — I have this friend whose movies appeal very broadly to a lot of people. That was the deciding factor. I can abuse this relationship for the good [of the trans community].” She added, “I still don’t know if Will knows what he did.”

Ferrell, who had been friends with Harper for over 30 years, admitted that he had “zero knowledge” about the trans community before Harper came out to him in 2021. He hopes that the film will allow others to see Harper’s story, and educate them about trans issues and history. “I had met trans people, but I didn’t have anyone personally in my life,” Ferrell said ( via Variety ). “So this was all new territory for me, which is why I think this film is so exciting for us to kind of put out there in the world. It’s a chance all of us in the cis community to be able to ask questions and also just to listen and be there as a friend to discuss this journey.”

Will & Harper will be streaming on Netflix later this year.

Over recent years, the public’s fascination with dark tourism destinations has boomed. Sites such as Chernobyl and Auschwitz draw in thousands of tourists every year. With so many of the population sharing a fascination for dark history, it is no wonder that so many have tuned into Netflix’s ‘Dark Tourist.

The show follows journalist David Farrier as he travels around hoping to experience the most macabre destinations that the world has to offer. Farrier’s quest to unearth the morbid takes him to several high profile dark tourism destinations, including the site of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, on a JFK assassination tour and he even witnesses an exorcism in Mexico City.

Although Farrier sometimes comes across as a mediocre Louis Theroux, this thought-provoking travel show succeeds in its aim and transports you into the unknown. The result is an interesting series that explores the darker side of life (and death).

Originally aired in 2017 with three episodes, Joanna Lumley’s India takes viewers on a personal trip across the country where she explores modern India and finds connections to members of her own family and the experience of being and speaking English in India .

Chasing Coral is a fascinating documentary about the disappearance of coral around the world. In this chasing coral, a team of divers, researchers and photographers set out on an ocean adventure to document the bleaching of Coral in warming seas. This phenomenon is when corals lose their beautiful and vibrant colors to become white, dying shortly after.

The point of this documentary is to show that the coral’s death is the result of climate change and the rise in temperatures that are absorbed by the oceans.

The documentary takes us to some of the most beautiful destinations in the world such as the Florida Keys, Hawaii and the Bahamas. More than that, this documentary also shows the important damage climate change has done to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

I definitely recommend this documentary to anyone who wants to really understand the impact of human activity on the ocean’s ecosystem.

If you’ve ever thought of visiting Cuba there are many Cuban movies and documentaries to help you to research your trip, but none are as epic as this one.

Many people believe that Cuba is a country frozen in time, but this Netflix documentary features Jon Alpert’s travels to Cuba over a span of nearly five decades.

And while the relationships between the United States and Cuba has been fragmented at times, he visited each time as an American journalist. It starts in 1970s, just over a decade since the Cuban revolution when the country was thriving.

Instead of giving his perspective on Cuba, he interviews three families who share their own stories of every day life. He continues to visit Cuba to find these families to update their stories. Over the decades the political situation and relationship with the United States changes quite dramatically.

And while he also interviews Fidel Castro, most of the film is really about everyday Cubans and their highs and lows.

Jack Whitehall is a British comedian who attended private school and has a somewhat disjointed relationship with his father Michael because of this. Jack also never got to take a gap year before going to university so season one of Travels with my Father is all about Jack finally embarking on a traditional ‘gap year’ trip to Southeast Asia. The twist is he takes his father with him so they can strengthen their bond.

The series takes place in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and highlights some of the gap year activities that can be done including full moon parties on the beach and visiting Angkor Wat. By the end of their travels, they reflect on what they have learned about each other and themselves.

The show continues in a similar fashion in the subsequent seasons where Michael takes Jack on a culture and history tour around Europe, Jack shows Michael everything the US has to offer, and both his mother and father join him for a road trip in Australia.

If you love travel, design and food, Restaurants on the Edge needs to be on your Netflix list. In each episode, the show highlights a restaurant in a stunning location.

The restaurants get a makeover from a design expert and the menu often gets an upgrade from the show’s chef, the goal is to take struggling restaurants and make them sustainable for the business owners.

There are currently two seasons of Restaurants on the Edge on Netflix, with locations throughout the world.

In season one, you’ll be treated to beautiful ocean views in Malta, as well as stunning architecture. The views continue with a cliff side restaurant in Costa Rica.

Season two will take you around the world again, with restaurants in Finland, St. Croix and Arizona.

Not only is it fun to see the upgrades these restaurants go through, but it’s also inspiring to see the impact the changes have on each person’s life making this show a must-watch.

If you are a fan of Italy, Italian art and History, then watch the gorgeous and surprisingly brutal history of the famous Medici’s of Florence.

The Netflix show is so well done with gorgeous cinematography, beautiful costumes and stage settings. The show includes all the surrounding countryside and historic sites that document the Medici Family and their major influence on Florence, Venice, and even Rome (two popes were related to the Medici family).

It also showcases early Catholic power and greed. The Pope had absolute power and a religious mission that seemed corrupt whichever person was Pope and ruler.

The Medici focus really hits the major sites of the city and also the start of the Renaissance period in Italy. The crowning of the main dome in the cathedral was a major achievement during this time frame and it was really fascinating to see how this was depicted and shown in development and the struggles of the Medici family to get this undertaking done.

Also, it was interesting to see how easy it was during that time frame to create wealth and also lose it depending on your affiliations and business relationships with the pope and other influential rulers of that time.

Watch the Medici’s on Netflix and if you visit Florence, you’ll gain a better understanding of the Medici fame and fortune in the area.

Below Deck Mediterranean’s locations have included Mykonos in the Greek Islands, Split and Cavtat in Croatia, the Amalfi Coast in Italy, the Cote d’Azur in the south of France and Mallorca in Spain’s Balearic Islands. Below Deck, Sailing Yacht has only had one series, set in Corfu.

Aired on Netflix, the series tells the real story of Charles Sobhraj, a French serial killer of Indian and Vietnamese origins who in the mid-1970s drugged, robbed and killed a large number of backpackers travelling between Thailand, India and Nepal.

Sobhraj and his Quebecoise girlfriend Marie-Andrée Leclerc were finally identified as the authors of the crimes thanks to the work of Dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg, who, albeit the many reservations of the Dutch ambassador to Thailand, set to investigate the disappearance of a Dutch couple and through a series of lead eventually managed to uncover the culprits.

My Octopus Teacher is an award-winning and very heart-touching documentary on Netflix that covers how a filmmaker spent a year trying to capture a wild octopus on camera and also form a friendship with it.

For about a year, Craig Foster films a wild octopus he came across while trying out free-diving through an underwater kelp forest in South Africa.

Over the period, Craig and the octopus develop a bond with the octopus almost showing Craig around and not being uninhibited by his presence as he follows it.

Craig watches as it protects itself, loses an arm to an attack and then regrows it too. At the end of the documentary, the octopus naturally passes away after mating and trying to protect its eggs.

Filmed entirely near Cape Peninsula in South Africa, this beautiful documentary is not to be missed as it covers an offbeat relationship between man and nature.

That's not even mentioning all the Netflix shows to dig through. If you know you're looking for a particular kind of movie, that can help, but even then, there can be too many movies to choose from. Luckily, we've been watching tons of great sci-fi movies and have already determined which ones rise to the top of the pile on Netflix. So if you're looking for the best sci-fi movies on Netflix this year, you've come to the right place. If you're looking for Netflix movies that will keep you occupied for a whole weekend or an evening, you can also check out our list of the best sci-fi series on Netflix right now.

What is the definition of an action movie? Can there even really be a complete explanation of the genre? Some feature the kinds of stunts that no mere mortal would ever dare to attempt, while others attempt to be more grounded. Still, others have outlandish premises that take us to new, far-off worlds. It's a genre that contains multitudes, but what makes an action movie great is its ability to thrill and captivate its audience. Over the course of its history as a streaming service, Netflix has been home to a number of great action titles. Some are funny, and others are deadly serious. The only thing we know for sure, though, is that the best action movies on Netflix are sure to please. We've also rounded up some of the best action movies on Amazon Prime worth watching if you've seen all these, as well as a few great action movies available on Hulu. Looking for even more films to stream online? We've found the all-around best Netflix movies, Amazon Prime movies, Disney Plus movies, and movies on Hulu to watch this month.

Uncharted (2022)

Japanese anime and the many Western series that were influenced by the genre continue to get more and more popular. As they do, every streaming site is eager to lockdown plenty of exclusive anime titles that will draw fans of the format to their services. Netflix has long had a stockpile of great action movies, but it turns out that the streamer also has a pretty excellent library of anime series as well, which is in addition to their great animated shows. The best anime on Netflix draw from a wide array of influences, but should give every fan of the form something to chew on.

While there are plenty of great action series on this list, anime is home to a wide array of different kinds of stories, and all of those stories are represented in one form or another on this list. Netflix is even moving into adapting some of these anime into live-action, although opinions are mixed on whether that strategy is going to work out. Whatever you think about that venture, though, this list is full of Netflix anime titles that are sure to make every anime fan happy.

of 13 Best Road Trip Movies on Netflix (March 2024)

Road trip movies often send out a deeper message than just going from point A to B. They depict transformations of those who embark on them and also stress immensely the value of the journey a lot more than the final destination. We understand the value of road trips for you. We also understand that, at times, a little push is needed to get the courage to leave behind everything for a while and go on one. 11 Travel Movies on Netflix to Download for Your Next Flight

By Meredith Carey

Into the Wild 2007

Whether you're back at home between trips or prepping for a two-hour-plus flight, watching classic travel movies on Netflix can be one of the best ways to spirit yourself away to a new destination. It's a great time to do so, too: With the streaming options below, this might be the best collection of films on the platform yet—especially when it comes to documentaries. And as more and more airlines move their in-flight entertainment from seatback screens to mobile apps, you might as well download these ahead of your next flight, so you can watch what you'd like (and not Hitch for the 20th time).

Note that you'll have to head off of Netflix to see some of our other favorites that the streaming site has previously carried (like road trip classic Y Tu Mamá También , which is available to rent on Amazon, or Catch Me If You Can , available on Peacock). And once you've finished this list, don't worry, we have a whole other list of our favorite travel TV shows on Netflix —including most of the late Anthony Bourdain's work—to binge.

For now, here's a list of some of our favorite movies involving travel by land, air, and sea, that are available right now on Netflix.

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Eat Pray Love Travel Movies

Eat Pray Love (2010)

Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir of leaving her busy city life behind to seek new adventures in Italy, India, and Indonesia has charmed millions of readers. The film may not have the emotional heft of the book, but the scenery it provides more than makes up for it.

Roma Travel Movies

Roma (2018)

One of Netflix's first original travel movies, Alfonso Cuarón's beautiful tribute to his youth in Mexico City recreates a world many felt had been lost to time. And if you want to stay in Roma 's world after the credits roll, look no further than our guide to Mexico City Airbnbs that features a number of rentals that feel like they could have been been in the film .

My Octopus Teacher 2020

My Octopus Teacher (2020)

This Netflix original documentary—which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 2021—follows filmmaker and freediver Craig Foster as he forges a friendship of sorts with a wild octopus that lives in a kelp forest off the coast of Simon's Town, an area outside of Cape Town more commonly known for its penguin-filled beaches. Follow Foster as he learns about the marine life in the area, and applies lessons he learns from the octopus, who he visits every day for a year, to his own life above sea level.

The Terminal 2004

The Terminal (2004)

While there are plenty of stories of travelers and refugees taking up a semi-permanent residence in an airport terminal, this version—where Tom Hanks plays a traveler who spends nine months in New York's JFK airport after arriving, only to find his passport is invalid and he can't return home—is completely fictional. Look for appearances by Stanley Tucci , Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Zoe Saldana, but don't look for recognizable JFK airport landmarks, as the terminal scenes were actually shot on a soundstage built into a hangar at L.A.'s Palmdale Regional Airport.

Casino Royale 2006

Casino Royale (2006)

Pick any of the 24 released Bond films and you'll watch the MI6 agent jetset from places like Dunn River Falls in Jamaica, in 1962's Dr. No, to Mexico City in the opening scene of Spectre . But we think Casino Royale has some of the best filming locations of them all—at least until No Time to Die hits theaters later this year—as it was filmed in Prague , the Bahamas, and Venice and Lake Como in Italy.

The Dawn Wall 2017

The Dawn Wall (2017)

Free Solo , the stress-inducing documentary that followed rock climber Alex Honnold as he scaled the 3,000-foot-tall El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without a rope, isn't on Netflix. (You'll have to go to Disney+ to watch it.) But The Dawn Wall is, and it'll give you a similar sense of adventure from the comfort of your couch or airplane seat. It follows Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson, the first climbers to attempt a free ascent of a section of El Capitan known as, you guessed it, the Dawn Wall. While they don't use equipment to aid their climbs, unlike Honnold they do use a harness and rope as a safety net.

Into the Wild 2007

Into the Wild (2007)

Based on a Jon Krakauer book by the same name, this Oscar-nominated movie follows Christopher McCandless (played by Emile Hirsch) as he hikes and hitchhikes all across North America, hitting California, North Dakota, Colorado, Utah, and many more U.S. states before ending up in Canada. But before you go planning a trip to see the bus that served as the real McCandless's home in the later parts of his life, know it's been relocated to the Museum of The North in Fairbanks, where it will be showcased soon in its own outdoor exhibit.

Chasing Coral (2017)

You may not be able to travel to see the Great Barrier Reef , the subject of this Netflix documentary, for much longer if we don't do something about climate change and ocean warming. The film uses high-tech camera equipment and time lapses to show the speed and scale of the deterioration of the coral, as it turns from colorful, vibrant ecosystems into a barren, lifeless wasteland. You'll feel truly gutted once the movie's over, but also a renewed drive to act. To learn more about the movie and hear firsthand about what it took to film, keep reading here .

Adrift 2018

Adrift (2018)

Another movie adaptation of a book—this time Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea by Tami Oldham Ashcraft— Adrift follows Tami (played by Shailene Woodley) as she sails with her beau Richard (played by Sam Claflin) from Tahiti to San Diego . The couple's path is intersected by a hurricane, setting them adrift and into survival mode. It's a harrowing, real life tale—but we won't give you any spoilers as to how it ends.

The Trader 2018

The Trader (2018)

If you're short on time, this documentary following the rural route of a traveling trader in the Republic of Georgia is perfect—it's just 23 minutes long. Despite its length, it packs a lot of emotion in, following Gela Kolochovi as he brings second-hand clothes, kid's toys, equipment and more to small towns in exchange for potatoes.

A Life on Our Planet

A Life on Our Planet (2020)

It couldn't be a list of travel movies without at least one appearance from Sir David Attenborough. And this one isn't the usual fare, turning the lens on the celebrated naturalist and beloved narrator himself. Over the course of the documentary, Attenborough reflects on his more than 90 years on earth so far, and his hopes for the protection of our planet and its residents big and small in the future. If you love the movie, be sure to check out his memoir by the same name, which delves deeper into the movie's message.

Sometimes the lineup of movies leaving Netflix NFLX by the end of any given month can be underwhelming—but that certainly is not the case this month. By the end of April, some incredible motion pictures will disappear from the streaming platform, including an ensemble western from Quentin Tarantino, a stark portrayal of mental health within the Batman universe, and what I personally consider to be the best horror movie of the 2020s so far. All in all, there’s a daunting amount of quality films leaving the Netflix library within the next couple weeks you do not want to miss.

So what movies should be at the top of your watchlist? Let’s dig in. Below, you’ll find my ten picks for the best movies leaving Netflix by the end of April 2024. Then at the bottom of the article, you’ll find a full list of every single movie exiting the platform by month’s end. From blockbusters to indies to every genre in between, I’m positive there’s at least one movie (and probably several more) that cater to everybody’s tastes.

The 10 Best Movies Leaving Netflix in April 2024

Train to busan (2016).

A harrowing journey unfolds on a high-speed train as a mysterious viral outbreak rapidly turns passengers into zombies, setting the scene for Train to Busan . Starring Gong Yoo as Seok-woo, a father who must protect his young daughter amidst the chaos, this Korean thriller delicately balances its relentless action with emotional stakes that keep you invested up until the final frame. The claustrophobia of the confined train only amplifies the suspense, making each decision a matter of life and death. As social norms collapse in this high-octane flick from Yeon Sang-ho, the same filmmaker who brought us projects like Peninsula , Hellbound , and JUNG UNG _E , the survivors are forced to confront not only the undead but also their own moral limits, resulting in a film that’s both a gripping horror and a heartrending commentary on humanity.

Apple iPhone 16: Unique All-New Design Promised In New Report

Huawei s pura 70 ultra beats iphone with pioneering new feature, meet the fintech billionaire making a fortune rewarding home renters, the florida project (2017).

On the periphery of Orlando's glittering theme parks, the stark reality of life at a budget motel unfolds in The Florida Project . This A24 production from director Sean Baker, who has directed several other indies like Starlet , Tangerine , and Red Rocket , explores the summer of a precocious six-year-old girl named Moonee, played by Brooklynn Prince, who filters her challenging environment through a lens of wonder and mischief. The juxtaposition of childhood innocence with the harsh realities faced by her young mother, portrayed by Bria Vinaite, and the gruff, caring motel manager played by Willem Dafoe, offers a vivid glimpse into the less seen side of poverty. The film touchingly highlights the stark contrast between the manufactured joy nearby and the struggles of those living on the margins.

Elvis (2022)

In Elvis , the turbulent life of rock and roll icon Elvis Presley is dramatized through the Baz Luhrmann filter, featuring a career-defining performance by Hollywood’s most exciting young thespian, Austin Butler. Chronicling Elvis’s meteoric rise to fame and his complex relationships, particularly with his manipulative manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks, the film paints a rich tableau of mid-20th century America. From the glitz and glamour of celebrity to the personal battles with identity and control, this story from Luhrmann, who previously brought us classics like Romeo + Juliet , Moulin Rouge , and The Great Gatsby , captures the vibrancy and the shadows of Elvis's life, exploring how his revolutionary music and troubled presence reflected the changing American landscape.

The Hateful Eight (2015)

Amidst a blizzard in post-Civil War Wyoming, tensions rise and secrets unravel in a stagecoach lodge where “The Hateful Eight” find shelter. This ensemble cast, including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, are drawn together by necessity but divided by past crimes and mysteries. This incredibly underrated Quentin Tarantino film slowly simmers as each character's backstory is revealed, leading to betrayal and violence. Crafted with rich dialogue and intense character development that we find in other Tarantino projects—from Pulp Fiction to Inglourious Basterds to Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood— the unpredictable story keeps you guessing, making for a thrilling examination of deception and survival in a confined and volatile setting.

Joker (2019)

Set against the gritty backdrop of Gotham City in Batman’s cinematic universe, Joker delves into the psyche of Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian who transforms into the infamous titular villain. Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of this dejected man’s descent into madness earned him an Academy Award, as his harrowing performance captured the essence of a man marginalized by society. This origin story from comedy master Todd Phillips, who brought us gems like Road Trip , Old School , and the Hangover film series, provides a dark and unsettling look at the complexities of mental illness and societal neglect, challenging the our collective perception of a character traditionally viewed only as a villain. This Best Picture nominee’s bold story and stylistic choices create a stark, visceral experience that redefines superhero cinema.

Down with the King (2021)

Down with the King features a famous rapper, Mercury Maxwell, played by Freddie Gibbs, who seeks solace from his high-pressure career in the serene farmlands of Massachusetts. However, his escape from the music scene leads to unexpected self-reflection as he forms connections with the local residents. This introspective journey directed by Diego Ongaro challenges Mercury’s aspirations and desires, leading to profound questions about identity and fulfillment outside the fame that has defined him. Forget what you’d typically expect from a hood film and think more Lost in Translation set in the forest. This unique film beautifully contrasts the tranquility of rural life with the tumultuous inner world of a public figure at a crossroads, offering a thoughtful exploration of life beyond the spotlight.

Malignant (2021)

In Malignant , Madison is plagued by visions of gruesome murders—which she soon discovers are not just nightmares but terrifying realities. As these horrific premonitions begin to manifest physically, she is forced to confront her own past to unravel the connection between her visions and the violent acts they foretell. This horror thriller starring Annabelle Wallis takes audiences on a twisting journey that challenges the boundaries between illusion and reality, weaving a tale filled with suspense and shocking revelations. James Wan's as-expected innovative approach to the genre—which is frequently on display in his other films, like The Conjuring , Aquaman , and Insidious —keeps viewers enthralled and guessing up until one of the most unexpected plot twists in recent memory.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Silver Linings Playbook narrates the life of Pat Solitano, portrayed by Bradley Cooper, who, after spending time in a mental institution, moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Tiffany, played by Jennifer Lawrence, a young widow with her own troubled past. As they partner up for a dance competition, their friendship offers them both a chance to heal and find silver linings in their struggles. This film from the award-winning David O. Russell, who has made a name for himself with heralded films like Three Kings , The Fighter , and American Hustle , balances humor with the emotional weight of mental health issues, crafting a heartwarming story about the unpredictability of life and the importance of second chances.

Whiplash (2014)

Whiplash captures the intense dynamics between a promising young drummer and his formidable music instructor in an elite conservatory. Andrew Neiman, played by Miles Teller, aspires to greatness, but finds himself under the rigorous and sometimes brutal tutelage of Terence Fletcher, portrayed by J.K. Simmons (who won an Oscar for his unbelievably intense performance). Their relationship tests the limits of ambition, talent, and sanity, illustrating the sacrifices required for mastery in the arts. The film from Damien Chazelle, who created deeply adored experiences such as La La Land and Babylon , features pulsating jazz soundtrack and sharp editing style mirror the high stakes and pressure-filled environment, making it a compelling study of obsession and the pursuit of perfection in the competitive world of music.

The Meg (2018)

Almost every movie on this list can be appreciated for its emotionally enriching story and captivating characters. But sometimes...you just need a dumb movie after a long hard day. In steps The Meg , where t he discovery of a massive prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon brings terror to the crew of an underwater research facility. Jason Statham stars as a deep-sea rescue diver tasked with stopping the monstrous creature before it can wreak havoc on the world. Combining science fiction with explosive action, this insane film from Jon Turteltaub, who gave us other goofy entertainers like the National Treasure films, delivers thrilling sequences as mortal humans confront this seemingly immortal ancient predator. With its high-stakes adventure and spectacular underwater scenes, The Meg offers a gripping tale of survival against a seemingly unstoppable force.

‘We are no closer to ridding ourselves of these terrible predators’ … Paul Gadd in Glitter: The Popstar Paedophile.

Glitter: The Popstar Paedophile review – a most sickening nostalgia trip

This relentless documentary takes us back in time to meet the women abused by glam-rock star Gary Glitter as children … and the roadies who tried to stop him (and set his wig on fire) 25 years before he finally got caught

D o you remember – it feels so long ago now – the days when it was a shock to find out that a rich, famous, charismatic man had been using his riches, fame and charisma to rape and abuse women and children and cover it up for years and years?

Glitter: The Popstar Paedophile is the bleakest of nostalgia trips, taking us back to those quaint times, before the public Jimmy Savile revelations, before the R Kelly revelations, before the Rolf Harris revelations, before Harvey Weinstein, Jeffrey Epstein … I could, unfortunately, go on but I think the point is made.

This 90-minute film tells the story with whose main beats we are now grotesquely familiar. We see the fame, this time via plenty of Top of the Pops footage of the glam-rock star Gary Glitter – real name, the name under which he would eventually be prosecuted, Paul Gadd – the high-energy interviews on the likes of Saturday Scene with Sally James, the more stately stuff with Terry Wogan and other chatshow presenters, and even an episode of This Is Your Life that was devoted to him. And, as with most of the documentaries about British celebrity paedophiles and/or abusers, there is a stomach-churning interview with Savile himself from what looks like the late 1980s, by which time they were both well practised in their depravities and giving new meaning to the phrase “hiding in plain sight”. See also Glitter’s 1980 hit What Your Mama Don’t See (Your Mama Don’t Know) replete with lines like “You insist you’re not to be kissed / ’Cause your mama’s not far away … One more glance, I might take a chance / I’m a desperate kind of man.”

We hear, mainly via the prosecuting counsels, from and about the women who would eventually see him convicted of various sex offences. Woman A suffered an attempted rape by 31-year-old Glitter/Gadd in 1975 when she was eight years old. Two other girls, around the age of 12, were raped by him after concerts, their mamas ushered elsewhere by members of the star’s entourage. There is an incident recounted by music journalist Garry Johnson about two men who were hired to work security for a Glitter gig around 1990 who discovered in one of the boxes they were carrying from his van huge numbers of Polaroid photos of children. They confronted him. He cried and offered them money. They refused it and walked off the job, setting fire to his wig on the way. The bathos of the last act should not obscure the fact that this seems to have been the closest his victims got to justice for the next 25 years.

The film assembles its evidence meticulously, relentlessly and unsensationally, including not just the facts that would end up in court but moments that tell us almost more than the lawyers can. There is the fleeting look of absolute terror in Glitter’s eyes when Paula Yates interviews him on the infamous On the Bed segment of The Big Breakfast and asks of his girlfriends: “Are they very young?” Glitter’s relief when she appears to mean women in their early 20s is palpable.

Despite a 1993 story in the News of the World about him having sex with a 14-year-old (attention focused on the photo she had of him without his wig, completely bald) and the rumours that had been swirling for years, it wasn’t until child sexual abuse images were found on a laptop he took in for repair in 1997 that any charges were filed against him. Woman A added her complaint to the charge sheet but the judge reckoned too much time had passed and dropped her case. Woman B, from the News of the World story, was destroyed on cross-examination, and by the judge’s recommendation that the jury should bear in mind that there are 14-year-olds “who look like girls” and 14-year-olds who “look like sophisticated ladies” and consider which category woman B fell into. Gadd was cleared of offences against her, but the public gallery reeled in shock when he pleaded guilty to all the child abuse image charges.

The film slightly rushes the years he then spent in south-east Asia, free to exploit vulnerable children in poorer countries, and the legal systems that effectively function as an international ring of enablers for paedophiles and other abusers. But it does its job in reilluminating the horrors of the past, which are also the horrors of the present and no doubt the horrors of the future too. We have a little more knowledge, a little more awareness, a little more wisdom. Perhaps we are a little more protective. But, as Glitter et al’s long freedom (and usually nugatory sentences if ever caught) show, these terrible, terrible predators are ever in our midst, and we are no closer to ridding ourselves of them.

The end of April means Hollywood is heading into the summer blockbuster season. The new month also signals the removal of many notable films on Netflix . Step Brothers , The Florida Project , The Sting , and the first three Jurassic Park films will be unavailable on Netflix starting May 1.

Dumb and dumber (1994), whiplash (2014), warrior (2011), joker (2019).

The list does not stop at the six films mentioned above. We selected five additional films departing Netflix at the end of April. Our choices include an Oscar-winning psychological thriller revolving around jazz, an iconic comedy from the 1990s, and a billion-dollar-grossing comic book villain origin story.

To quote Aaron Rodgers , “How can you not be romantic about football?” Football is a beautiful game with jaw-dropping plays, eccentric personalities, and passionate fan bases, making the sport the perfect backdrop for the romantic dramedy Silver Linings Playbook . Following a stint in a mental institution, Pat Solitano Jr. (Bradley Cooper) is released into the care of his parents, including his Philadelphia Eagles-loving father (Robert De Niro).

A changed man, Pat strives to find the positives in every situation. While exercising one day, Pat receives an interesting offer from the widowed Tiffany Maxwell ( Jennifer Lawrence ). If Pat serves as her dance partner, then Tiffany will help Pat win his estranged wife back. When he begins to fall for Tiffany, Pat is forced to reexamine his relationships and determine what’s important to him. Will that be a trip down memory lane, or is everything Pat needs in front of him?

In 1994, Jim Carrey began his ascent to the No. 1 comedy movie star in the world. Carrey starred in three films that year: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective , The Mask , and a film leaving Netflix this month, Dumb and Dumber . Best friends Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) are dumb as rocks, but that doesn’t stop them from trying to build successful lives. Lloyd, a limo driver, falls in love with Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly), the woman he brings to the airport.

When Mary purposely leaves a briefcase at the airport, Lloyd intervenes and retrieves it. However, Lloyd is unaware that Mary left the case as ransom. Lloyd and Harry set off on a road trip to Aspen, Colorado, a place where the beer flows like wine and beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano, to return the briefcase. To say hijinks ensue would be an understatement, as these two goofs become two of the defining comedic characters of the ’90s.

Stream Dumb and Dumber   on Netflix.

What does greatness cost? Damian Chazelle depicts the pursuit of perfection through the eyes of an aspiring musician in Whiplash . Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is a jazz drummer and a first-year student at a prestigious music conservatory. Andrew dreams of becoming a great drummer like his idol, Buddy Rich. Terrence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) notices Andrew’s potential and recruits him to play in the school’s top ensemble band.

On his first day with the band, Fletcher berates Andrew by insulting his musical knowledge and slapping him in the face. Fletcher even hurls a chair at Andrew’s head when he’s in the wrong tempo. While this might deter most musicians, it only motivates Andrew, who pushes away his friends and loved ones to concentrate on becoming a better drummer. Backed by terrific performances from Teller and Simmons, Whiplash is a brilliant examination of the human spirit and what the greats are willing to do to be the best.

Stream Whiplash   on Netflix.

Warrior , the 2011 sports drama from Gavin O’Connor, will make even the toughest man in the world shed a few tears. After a stint in the Marines, Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy) enlists the help of his estranged father (Nick Nolte) to help him train for Sparta, a mixed martial arts tournament with a grand prize of $5 million. Unbeknownst to Tommy, his older brother Brendan (Joel Edgerton), a high school physics teacher, also gains a spot in Sparta, hoping to win the money to save his home from foreclosure.

The two brothers have a complicated past that forced them to separate. Now, the brothers are on a collision course to settle their differences in the octagon. Warrior  is an effective sports movie featuring excellent mixed martial arts scenes inside the cage. However, the film is at its best when it focuses on conflict outside the cage, as two brothers and their recovering alcoholic father confront their familial problems. Warrior’s compassion and grace certainly pack a punch.

Stream Warrior on Netflix.

Before he sings and dances with the love of his life in Joker :  Folie à Deux , revisit  Joker  and the origin story of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), who would become one of Gotham City’s most notorious criminals. Arthur is an aspiring comedian and clown who suffers from severe mental illness. Society has bullied and rejected Arthur, causing him to sink into the city’s criminal underworld.

As he slowly descends into madness, Arthur gains more confidence and takes on the persona of the Joker, a nihilistic clown who becomes a symbol of chaos and anarchy. Love it or hate it, Joker  is a brilliant showcase for Phoenix, whose bold portrayal of DC’s iconic villain resulted in him winning the award for Best Actor at the 2020 Oscars.

Anyone who has ever stumbled across something great on Netflix knows that the streaming service has plenty of great and unheralded shows worth checking out. If you've ever tried to blindly find those shows yourself, though, you may also be aware that there are lots of shows on Netflix that aren't really as good as they might seem.

Wading through this huge pile of content without any assistance can be difficult, to say the least, which is why we've taken the time to point out a few underrated shows that are worth investing your time in. These three shows may not be at the top of your Netflix recommendations, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth checking out. Better Call Saul (2015-2022) Official Season 6 Trailer | Better Call Saul

If it seems like there's an unexpected champion on top of the list of Netflix's most popular movies every week, that's because there often is. There's always at least one film that comes out of nowhere and blows away the competition from both the major studios and Netflix itself. This week, that movie is Anna, a 2019 action thriller from writer/director Luc Besson that bombed during its initial run in theaters. But when has that ever stopped Netflix users from embracing a flick?

One of the big reasons why Anna failed to connect with audiences the first time is that Lionsgate dropped Anna in theaters with little fanfare, so it wasn't surprising when people simply didn't show up to see it. Now that the film is enjoying a surge of popularity, it's time to go over the four reasons why you should watch Anna on Netflix. It's La Femme Nikita 2.0

At movie theaters nationwide this weekend, the action and horror genres will be well served with the simultaneous debuts of Guy Ritchie's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and the vampire ballerina movie Abigail. (I'm not making that second one up; it exists!) Those movies have their fans, but it's not a stretch to predict there will be quite a few people who will want to stay home to see what's on streaming instead.

The king of those streamers, Netflix, always has something for everyone. And  Digital Trends has crafted a selection of three underrated movies currently streaming on Netflix that are worth your time and attention this weekend. One is a guilty pleasure action movie, another is an underrated comedy from eight years ago, and the last one is a little-seen thriller from 2020.

‘Baby Reindeer’: Is Netflix’s Latest Hit Getting a Season 2?

The surprise Netflix hit has many calling for a second season.

Occasionally, a streamer quietly releases a series that shocks the world and takes it by storm. From Squid Game to Virgin River and even Bridgerton , no one at Netflix could have expected these shows to capture attention quite as much as they did , with that trend rearing its head once again in the form of Richard Gadd 's Baby Reindeer .

Already cracking the Netflix Top 10 in the US and even hitting number one in the UK , the weaving and sadly true narrative of Baby Reindeer has got everyone talking, with its wild premise and twist-filled first season some of the most captivating television many have seen in quite some time. However, the question remains as to whether this beloved new series will be getting a second outing, so, with that in mind, here is a look at whether Baby Reindeer is getting a Season 2.

Baby Reindeer (2024)

In a dark and gripping narrative, a young man's life spirals into chaos when an innocent encounter at his bar job leads to an obsessive stalking by an older woman. The film skillfully explores themes of privacy, obsession, and the boundaries of social interaction.

Is 'Baby Reindeer' Getting a Second Season?

With the hearts and minds of the world enthralled by Baby Reindeer , it is understandable why so many may expect Netflix to capitalize on the success and commission a second season. However, this story and its true-to-life nature mean that there is only so much to say, with the intention for Baby Reindeer to be a limited series always clear. That being said, no one could have expected quite the triumph it has quickly become, with Netflix and creator Richard Gadd not commenting on the possibility of a second outing . To find out as soon as any information regarding this is shared, stay tuned to Collider.

What Happened in 'Baby Reindeer' Season 1?

Baby Reindeer 's first season tells the frightening tale of how one small act of seemingly inconsequential kindness can lead to a devastating set of consequences . The show stars Richard Gadd as struggling comedian Donny Dunn, who takes up bartending to try and earn a living. However, little would Donny know that his quaint bartending job would change his life after giving one of his customers a free cup of tea after noticing her clear vulnerability.

That customer is Martha ( Jessica Gunning ), a woman for whom this simple act of kindness would quickly spiral into obsession. After spending the evening flirting and first nicknaming him "Baby Reindeer", Martha would leave the encounter a changed woman, with her soon relentless emails and phone calls turning rapidly into a dangerous infatuation that threatens to destroy both of their lives .

However, this is not an average case of stalking, and one unlike many you're likely to see in the movies, something creator, Gadd, mentioned in an interview with TUDUM . He said:

“Stalking on television tends to be very sexed-up. It has a mystique. It’s somebody in a dark alley way. It’s somebody who’s really sexy, who’s very normal, but then they go strange bit by bit. But stalking is a mental illness. I really wanted to show the layers of stalking with a human quality I hadn’t seen on television before. It’s a stalker story turned on its head. It takes a trope and turns it on its head.”

Watch on Netflix

What is 'Baby Reindeer' About?

The quite intense power behind the gripping tonal quality of Baby Reindeer comes from it being a true story, as well as having the man who was actually affected by the events in the series in real life play the lead . Initially, Baby Reindeer began life as a one-man stage show, with Gadd even taking the performance to the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe and receiving a positive critical and fan reception. In a conversation with TUDUM , Gadd said:

“In a weird way, I first started feeling like this could be a good story during the whole ordeal itself. It was one of the most intense periods, when I was listening to these voicemails. I’d go to sleep at night and these voicemails—her words would bounce around my eyelids. I remember thinking, ‘God, if I was ever to speak about this onstage, I’d fire the words around. Put the voicemails in a big cacophony and fire it.’ That’s how the play was born.”

When discussing the choice to include both comedy and drama in this series, Gadd said:

“Some of the darkest places I’ve been in, I’ve found giggles somehow. And some of the funniest places I’ve been in, including backstage at comedy clubs with other comedians, can be the most depressing places as well. I always think life is a mixture of light and shade. So I wanted Baby Reindeer to be a blend of them both.”

Given the content of Baby Reindeer really did happen to the man playing its lead, the action throughout the show is given a darker edge, knowing that Richard Gadd is reliving some of the toughest times in his life. Remarkably, Gadd stays true to playing Dunn, a fictionalized version of himself, without ever feeling the weight of the subject matter, likely helped by his decision to turn his pain into art some five years ago.

Shows Like 'Baby Reindeer' To Watch While You Wait For Season 2

Just in case a second season does get commissioned, it's likely there may be some time to wait before it arrives on our screens, leaving many yearning for some more alternative Netflix content to binge on. Well, fear not, as here are three recommendations of how you can fill your time with more Baby Reindeer -esque shows.

'The End Of The F***ing World'

The end of the f***ing world.

The success of this 2017 hit was just as much a surprise to the show's creators as Baby Reindeer may have been to Netflix . First airing on Channel 4 in the UK, the series quickly became a hit worldwide thanks to an enigmatic central story of identity and friendship . The show follows James ( Alex Lawther ), a teenager who is convinced he is a psychopath. The two run away on a road trip alongside his classmate Alyssa ( Jessica Barden ). However, unbeknownst to Alyssa who simply wants to escape her home life, James is planning on murdering her, but will his insistent belief in his own psychopathy actually come to fruition?

'Beef'

Two people let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their every thought and action.

Just like Baby Reindeer , this comedy/drama begins with a seemingly innocuous incident that soon spirals into the chaotic breakdown of two lives. After becoming entangled in an argument about road rage, Amy ( Ali Wong ) and Danny ( Steven Yeun ) refuse to admit fault for the incident, with their childish insults quickly transcending into violent acts. Bursting with enigmatic storytelling and a cast who clearly love this tale, Beef was such a hit for Netflix that it was anything but surprising when a second season was officially announced - perhaps an outcome befitting of Baby Reindeer too?

'Maid'

Although missing some of the more comedic aspects of Baby Reindeer , the darker moments of the hit new show are mirrored tonally in Maid . Starring Margaret Qualley , this series follows a woman, Alex, desperate to find a new life with her daughter after finally escaping the clutches of an abusive ex. Not simply burdened with looking after her offspring, Alex must also take care of her mother who has undiagnosed BPD, leading to a cocktail of stress and heartbreak that feels ripped straight from one of Baby Reindeer 's most heartbreaking scenes .
