7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

The trip has been a fantastic experience. Very well organized and with a perfect itinerary to visit the most important national parks. Our guide, Haley, exuded enthusiasm, was always very close and friendly and was very attentive and solicitous, at all times, to the needs of the group. Luckily, the four of us were able to do the tour alone (we were with our family) and everything was very easy. We believe, however, that it is not very appropriate to charge a supplement for meals (some sandwiches that, necessarily, were repeated day after day). We also miss some more precise cultural information about the history and characteristics of the places visited. Likewise, we believe that the price is very high and that, therefore, the breakfasts of two of the hotels should also be included, strangely excluded unlike the others. That being said, the Tour is wonderful and well worth it.

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour Tour

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour

All We Could Have Asked For and More! We recently returned from the ""7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour"". Our tour was led by Kaitlyn Usher. The tour was wonderful, everything was near perfect and Kaitlyn is one of the kindest, hardest working and knowledgeable guides we've ever had! I had mentioned that my husband was turning 70 on the 1st day of the tour to someone at Bindlestiff 2 weeks before the tour and Kaitlyn had a small birthday cake and candles on that first lunch stop! What a nice surprise for my husband. Most anything we asked of her was taken care of and questions answered. We just can't say enough good things about her! The itinerary of the tour was great, we saw and did everything we wanted to do. The van was comfortable and kept clean by Kaitlyn every night. Plenty of items for the picnic lunches (a super idea). She always had options to match physical abilities. The 50 minute ride over the Grand Canyon (optional) was spectacular, the heliport is a distance from the rim, so be sure to do the longer ride to have enough canyon viewing time. The optional Hummer tour was very exciting and scary (in a good way). Thank you for a wonderful birthday trip and great memories!

Hiking Utah\'s Mighty 5 Tour

Hiking Utah's Mighty 5

Tour itinerary was well planned in order to see and hike Utah’s Big 5 National parks in 9 days. Our guide Rachel was excellent and did her best to manage 12 clients, drive, buy food, supervise food preparations and clean up, and break camp. However, given the amount of organization needed for camping, meals and driving required; and overseeing the often difficult and strenuous hikes, it would have been a better trip if there were 2 guides instead of only one. This trip went very well because we were an older group with many professionals with administration experience who pitched in to help the trip go smoothly. If a group on this tour does not blend as well as we did, don’t pitch in to do their share of work, and/or do not have experience working as a-team with administration experience, it may not go so well or more likely be a disaster. To avoid this, better to have 2 guides.

Western USA National Parks Loop Tour

Western USA National Parks Loop

One of the best group trips I have ever been on. Rene was absolutely fantastic! Zion national park, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon are absolutely amazing places to visit. Photos can not do justice to the sheer magnificent beauty. Our group was amazing, friendly, fun, always on time and ages 30s-60s. The accommodations were sufficient and the hikes were manageable even for someone like myself who is not the most physically fit. I would suggest arriving a day or 2 early in Vegas or staying the night you return to get the most out of the experience. The Hoover dam is not included but there are short day trips from Vegas that cover this area which is definitely worthwhile. The days were long but there was sufficient rest at night to cope with some of the early morning wake up times. Which was WELL worth it!! Seeing the Grand Canyon at sunset was a sight I will never forget. If I can give 10 stars I would. This was my first intrepid trip and I have to say it won’t be the last. Even though we were unable to kayak lake Powell because time of year, we saw antelope canyon which was quite spectacular. Monument valley was also an experience to remember. If you have the opportunity to go, do it! You won’t regret one minute!

Just couldn’t have been better. Extremely professional guides Robin and Sarah were highly knowledgable, friendly and organised. Accomodation was excellent in every location (most hotels even had hot tubs and pools!) and the food options were always good. Lovely comfortable Mercedes minibus. Highly recommended to everyone - would do another tour with South West Adventure Tours in a heartbeat.

Mighty 5 From Salt Lake City

Our Utah Mighty 5 Tour exceeded expectations in every category imaginable. This was our first guided travel tour and we felt spoiled in every respect. As close to an all inclusive hiking tour I think you could find. Our guide, Christopher, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the Utah National Parks-the geology, history and culture of each region and really catered to the needs of each guest on his tour. Every detail of our day was planned and well thought out. I would not hesitate to book another tour with Christopher. Amazing experience!

Tim was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful, and always upbeat. Time with the wildlife expert was phenomenal. the tour itself was excellent. The good ranking has to do with communications from Intrepid Travel, which were poor and lead to changed air flights and other headaches.

Enchanting Canyonlands (Classic, 7 Days) Tour

Enchanting Canyonlands (Classic, 7 Days)

I wanted to say excellent, but there is room for improvement. The website could be better. It required passport information with no option for "Not applicable." As a U.S. Citizen traveling in the U.S., a passport wasn't needed, but I continued to get reminders to complete my profile. Fortunately, I got an email assuring me I didn't need the passport, but I suggest updating your website. The descriptions of several days said "relaxed start," but most days, we had to be up early enough to be showered, dressed, and have our suitcases ready for pickup by 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. As an east-coaster, that was fine for me because of the time difference, but normally, I wouldn't call that relaxed. The sites were stunning, the optional activities were great, although one that I wanted to do got canceled due to a storm and there was no way to reschedule. The lodging was great at each stop and the provided meals were excellent. Some of the suggested "on-your-own" spot for meals were not so good. The change of lodging plans at the Grand Canyon was disappointing because we didn't get to see the sunrise at the Grand Canyon or the stars late the night before. Sedona, The Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park were all fantastic, and we were blessed with great weather for most of the trip. Everyone should see these wonders of God's creation.

Rocky Mountain Tours & Rocky Mountain Tour Reviews

We thoroughly enjoyed the 7-day tour of the US southwest . We love the destinations included in the tour, every place we visited is on our bucket list. I wanted to pinch myself every day that I visited those iconic and beautiful places as shown in my photos below. We enjoyed all the extra, optional experiences that were suggested by the tour guide. They added more fun to the tour. The Hummer tour in Moab, Utah was one of the optional experiences and it was a blast! Not only it’s fun, you get to see the amazing scenery during the sunset. One previous review mentioned he or she was forced to participate in the Navajo taco dinner in Monument Valley. That comment is not true. You have a choice not to do that and the guide can make a different arrangement for you. The optional Navajo taco dinner is one of the highlights of the tour that we will remember for a long time. It would be a shame not to have this cultural experience when you get to meet Navajo people when you are in the Navajo Nation! Our tour guide, John did a fantastic job. He was full of enthusiasm and energy. He kept the tour well organized and always provided information we needed. We highly recommend the tour.
What a lifetime experience everyone needs Jun 2023 • Solo Within 7 days, we drove in 3 states, visited 5 national parks / 2 state parks, hiked 60 miles, made friends from 7 different states/nations, and eventually traveled through the iconic Route 66 back to Las Vegas. What a lifetime experience everyone needs Day 1 - Zion National Park Day 2 - Bryce Canyon National Park Day 3 - Canyonlands National Park Day 4 - Arches National Park Day 5 - Monument Valley Navajo Nation Day 6 - Grand Canyon National Park / Antelope State Day 7- Grand Canyon back to Las Vegas via Historic Route 66 AMAZING!
the best way to explore the vastness and glory of the Utah desert is by camping and hiking in small groups. I enjoyed this trip immensely, it was challenging enough but not too much. Our guide was a brave and resourceful powerful woman. I am planning my next trip with you already!

  • When to visit Rocky Mountain National Park
  • What you need to know about reservations for Rocky Mountain National Park
  • How to tour Rocky Mountain National Park
  • The best Rocky Mountain National Park tours, sorted by start location

When to Visit Rocky Mountain National Park

You can visit Rocky Mountain National Park all year-round, but different seasons have different considerations to keep in mind.

Generally, late June to mid-October is the best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park.

Local Tip: This is when Trail Ridge Road is open (generally) and you can access all areas of the park.

In the summer and early fall, the park will be extremely crowded, and you will have to make a timed entry reservation (see below), but you will also have lovely weather and could see wildflowers in bloom or beautiful fall foliage.

In the winter, the park is especially gorgeous in the snow, and snowshoeing in RMNP is a fantastic experience.

But avalanche conditions may exist on hikes, and Trail Ridge Road is closed, so you won’t be able to drive from the east to west side of the park.

View of the Rocky Mountains early in the morning during one of the best Rocky Mountain National Park tours.

Do You Need a Reservation for Rocky Mountain National Park?

Rocky Mountain National Park is the most popular of the Colorado National Parks , so a timed entry system has been implemented during peak season.

From late May to mid-October, reservations are required to enter Rocky Mountain National Park. You can find out more details about timed entry and how to make reservations on the RMNP site here.

The timed entry system is a little tricky – if it sounds really overwhelming, then selecting a tour that handles this part of the planning for you is the way to go!

Just be sure to check what’s included in your tour. (Psst: we’ve added that info below, but be sure to double-check with the tour provider, since details can change.)

What is the Best Way to Tour Rocky Mountain National Park

You can definitely explore Rocky Mountain National Park on your own, but the best Rocky Mountain National Park tours are guided by local experts who can make sure you visit all the best spots in the park.

A private tour lets you customize your itinerary if you have specific places you want to see.

One of the biggest advantages of a tour is the increased chances to see wildlife. Tour guides generally know where the bigger herds of elk are and they have a trained eye to spot wild animals.

Of course, there are no guarantees, but if you’re looking for a wildlife expert, then a tour is a great option.

Even my six year old daughter was able to gain an appreciation for how unique the area is! We visited the park in March during somewhat snowy conditions, but Ryan was able to improvise for weather (and a six year old who couldn’t hike in deep snow). He also made a tasty lunch for us! Overall, the highlight of seeing the park with Ryan is how much you learn along the way. He’s incredibly informative and able to explain complex concepts in an easy to understand way. It is often recommended that you spend some time acclimatizing to a higher elevation before you begin hiking or trekking. This is especially recommended if you live closer to sea level.

Are there bears in Rocky Mountain National Park?

Yes, there are black bears in Rocky Mountian National Park but seeing or encountering one is rare. There are only a small number of bears in the park and they are known to be shy and likely to run away when they hear humans.

The black bear found in this part of Colorado isn't always black in color. This species can have black fur but they may also have a lighter brown coat.

Hiking Adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park from Denver

The hike was great we didn’t have a lot of time so taking this hike with a guide was perfect. Ty was so nice and knowledgeable, we learnt so much and he made it fun for the kids too. Highly recommend!

My experience was incredibly remarkable. I have never seen a view like this before! Definitely worth going to and recommending.

24 hr stop over in Denver so looked for a shorter Rockies experience. This trip didn’t disappoint. The four hours flew by and took in some great mountain scenery and spots. Tour guide Elsa was great fun, really knowledgeable, excellent taste in music, and has converted my into a major Aspen (tree) fan 👍 Would recommend. Many thanks. Pete S (UK)

Half-Day Rocky Mountain Escape

We loved this excursion! Our guide, Jed, was such a genuinely nice person who was very knowledgeable about the area and nature. We felt safe in his care as we traveled into the Rockies and experienced the twists and turns of the the ride up! We learned many things about the history of Denver, indigenous species of animals and trees and many, many other things. The write-up describing this tour is exactly what we expected - we did not need to be Olympic athletes to enjoy a mild walk through some of the most picturesque views of the area. We will definitely come back and enjoy another tour from this company when in Denver again. Highly recommend.

This has been an amazing experience. In a trip that takes only 4 hours, we were able to see, enjoy and feel overwhelmed about the wonders of Mother Nature. This experience was unique with the guide of Aaron. He is very well versed about the mountains in Colorado, so kind and made feel great with all the participants. This is a highly recommended tour.

From start to finish, this tour was wonderful. Our guide Gentry was very kind and considerate in addition to being extremely knowledgeable about all things geology and meteorology. She knew much about the Rocky Mountains and took us to some excellent sites for photos. This tour was so fun that next time we plan to do the whole day tour! Kudos to Gentry for all her excellent driving down those steep roads; she is a highly competent driver!

My best friend and I loved this escape!!! Watching the ice fishing and our walk through Idaho Springs was amazing. Gentry was fantastic. Highly recommend this trip!

Booked the 1/2 day fly-fishing trip and had an absolute blast!! It was my first time fly-fishing and David was a great instructor, sharing different techniques that allowed me to become really comfortable trying something new. His passion for the sport is infectious and he was always encouraging. We had a great day, caught several fish, laughed a lot, and I felt like I was hanging out with a friend, rather than just another guide doing his job. Can’t recommend enough.

November 26, 2019

My daughter and I did a one-day fishing trip to Buena Vista. We stayed in a hotel the night before. David, our guide, picked us up at 8:45. We went and picked up the boots and waders. The mile-long fishing area was about 10 minutes from Buena Vista. David was very helpful and positive. We caught a total of 7 brown trout, ranging from 8 inches to about 15 inches. All of the fish I caught fought and jumped out of the water during the fight. Although the day was quite windy and rainy at times, David was patient and helpful (my daughter had never fly fished previously). We fished both dry and wet flies. We made sandwiches for lunch and the company was actively working on the road to the site as we fished. There is a highway not too far from the fishing area, so you could year car sounds - I found I didn’t think it was overly disruptive. They plan on building cabins in the next year. Currently it is very primitive. Overall the experience was excellent and fun! Thank you!

October 28, 2019

I cannot write enough good things about our guide, David, and our half day fly fishing trip in RMNP. David was friendly and attentive. We talked a few times before the trip so he could make sure he had our sizes for attire, snacks we preferred, and plans for pick up time. We had never been fly fishing and David was knowledgeable and patient teaching us the basics to make us fly fishing enthusiasts for life! I was sad to leave the park and left wishing I had booked a full day trip. I will recommend this trip to all friends and family and this will become an annual trip for me!

September 22, 2019

As a recent transplant to Denver, I have now found my go-to tour company, Aspire, to learn all the things Denver (& Colorado) has to offer. I had always heard Colorado is known for its fly fishing, therefore, I signed up for this trip with ZERO experience. By the end, I am confident I could go out with my friends without a guide! Brian, the co-owner of Aprire and my guide for the day, went out of his way to make this a fantastic experience. I would not miss out on this special Colorado Fly Fishing Trip - I am already looking forward to my next one with Brian & the Aspire Team!

I took the hiking tour to the Rocky Mountains and it was hands down one of the best experiences I've ever had in life. Our guide Win was awesome. Fun, knowledgeable and with an extraordinary attitude and respect towards nature and people. His serene positivity really puts you in the right state of mind to hike the Rockies and immerse yourself in their pristine nature. We learned about the territory, its nature, animals and trees and I came back enriched. We also spotted a moose taking a bath in a pond, which really made my trip unique. I really recommend going on a hike with Aspire Tours if you want to get the best out of the Rockies.

Private Rocky Mountain National Park Hike

Mel was awesome! I recommend this tour if ur solo with friends or family! They make it easy with pickup in Denver and boulder. The hike was doable just bring proper footwear, sunblock and plenty of water. Our tour guide Mel was so accommodating, knowledgeable, kind and down to earth! I can’t wait for my next tour with Aspire!

August 26, 2019

The hike was beautiful to say the least. Our guide Austin was soooo full of knowledge from every aspect of the tour From history of every building we passed on our drive to the mountain and info about each town. He knew every mountains name and how each was formed and how old everything was. The knowledge was superior ! His personality was contagious ! He made the tour so wonderful! The hike is just enough beauty and challenge! We got to see and elk and her baby;) the van we rode in was clean and nice. I highly suggest Aspire Tour company and Austin! Thanks for a wonderful experience

September 4, 2019

Wow!!! I was looking for a family friendly tour of Rocky Mountain National Park, and thanks to Aspire tours and our guide Kyle H our trip was spectacular!! Aspire had excellent customer service, and the convenience of pick up in Denver coming from the east coast was wonderful. Our guide Kyle was simply fantastic, he was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun, and he customized our two days perfectly for our family. We loved the iconic Trail Ridge Road experience, the kids smiles as they lept over the Colorado River at the source were priceless, and the hike to Dream Lake was phenomenal. Thank you Aspire and Kyle for a wonderful tour in this majestic place!

June 23, 2022

We took a full day private tour from Denver to Rocky Mountain National Park with Mel. She was absolutely awesome. From the moment she picked us up at our hotel everything was perfect. Mel was personable, informative and simply a wonderful tour guide. We went for a long hike to a waterfall. Lunches were packed and provided. The view was spectacular and the information constant. We saw multiple elk. We also learned a great deal about Denver and Colorado in general.

September 16, 2019

Kyle was an excellent tour guide! I was looking for a way to see RMNP while visiting Denver and traveling alone with my son. We only had one day to explore the park and wanted to maximize our time and feel safe. The private tour provided just that - I was able to relax and take it all in, not having to worry about navigating. Kyle knew the park and could help us pack as much into our day as possible. We had a blast hiking, viewing wildlife, and seeing the beautiful terrain.

October 16, 2022

We enjoyed our private day tour trip with Dylan as our tour guide. He took us to Trail ridge road with the scenic views and pass. We also went to Lily Lake - quite exquisite serene lake. On the way over we were lucky to see heard of elk in the meadows passing by Trail ridge road. Its an amazing experience and Dylan is very knowledgebake about the area. Very educational trip about Rocky Mountain Park. We love it as our first time to the beautiful national Park 🥰⛰ ✨ Amazin experience for first timers.

June 27, 2022

We had a fantastic day exploring with Kyle, our guide. He has a sixth sense on what's happening in the park from where the sun is shining to where the moose are gathering. So much so that we nicknamed him the "Moose Whisperer". We went deep into the park and found the sun at 12,000 feet on Trail Ridge Road and drove all the way to the Continental Divide. Lots of amazing views of the mountains above the clouds. Great tour!

September 10, 2022

Our guide Aaron was excellent. He was very passionate about everything he showed us and very much interested in making sure we enjoyed the whole experience. We saw, a Lynx eating a mouse, Elk, Deer, Eagles, an Owl, Turkeys on a tree. a water fall, we learned about the rocks, and trees so much more. Highly recommend.

Jed was amazing! We had the best day and my 3 boys say it was the best day of their life! Unfortunately the only wildlife we saw were deer but that's just the way it goes sometimes. We will be back and will recommend to everyone we know!

December 17, 2022

What an awesome way to spend the day hiking while taking in spectacular views! This hiking adventure does not disappoint!

Rocky Mountain National Park Hike

Amazing adventure, Mike is just incredible and knows everything about the region and its history. The group atmosphere was great also.

May 11, 2022

Aaron was an amazing guide! He was extremely knowledgeable but even more importantly entertaining! This was a great way to get a taste of RMNP without renting a car.

July 13, 2022

We had the best day-it was a wonderful experience with our knowledgeable, friendly guide. We enjoyed the hike and cannot recommend this day in Rocky Mountain national park enough!

July 19, 2022

This tour was definitely a highlight of my short weekend trip to Denver..I am so glad I decided to do this tour. Communication with Aspire Tours ahead of time was quick and easy, and our guide Ty was top-notch! He gave lots of interesting information about Colorado history and the various ecosystems we encountered on our trip. He also made sure we were adequately hydrated and periodically checked on everyone to make sure they were feeling good and no altitude sickness. The hike was perfect in terms of difficulty level and pace. We had plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful scenery and take photos. This tour takes the guesswork out of visiting the Rockies, especially if you are on a time constraint. I would recommend this tour to anyone looking to enhance their Colorado experience.

August 2, 2022

From start to finish, this trip was an incredible journey! Jed, like Jedi but without the i (inside joke), was the best guide! His knowledge of the Denver area, the Rocky Mountains, and the hike itself were amazing. The hike was easily the most incredible hike I’ve ever had. The views, far exceeded our expectations, and our expectations were high. I couldn’t recommend this trip enough! Do it, you won’t regret it!

April 20, 2022

I will always remember the most breathtaking views hiking with my daughter in the Rocky’s! It was such a beautiful day and Nick our tour guide with awesome! He was so fun, kind and informative. He knew where to stop and get great pictures and picked a wonderful place for us to hike. I would recommend this tour to anyone that is coming to visit the Denver area, my daughter and can’t wait to come back!

August 4, 2022

The views were beautiful and Phil was knowledgeable, patient, and fun. We had a great time. Signedup for another tour this afternoon!

October 23, 2022

A must-do if you are remotely interested in hiking, and that goes for for locals and Colorado visitors alike. Ryan was a phenomenal, passionate tour guide. He's not only intelligent about the area, but had a fun sense of humor. His guidance ensured I got to experience an especially scenic trail, filled with fun facts and stories about the individual mountains, the wildlife/birds, and the plants/nature along the way. If I'd of ventured to Rocky Mtn National park and tried to find my way solo, I'd likely of missed out on the extra-amazing photo opps, and my brain definitely would have missed out on learning dozens of fun facts about the area I just hiked through. The pickup/dropoff from downtown Denver was convenient as well.

November 1, 2022

Our guide Clyde was so knowledgeable about tips for adjusting to the high altitude, flora and fauna of the area, other areas to visit, and places to eat. He showed us incredible spots around several lakes, and we even spotted elk! Clyde was prepared with Yeti traps for each of us as it had just snowed the day before, also with chains/sand for icy driving conditions. And I loved my lunch that catered to my dietary restrictions!

November 7, 2022

We went on the full day hiking trip to the Rocky Mountain national park and had a fantastic time! We felt well prepared based on the information we’d been given. Paul Kullman was an amazing guide! We saw beautiful views, had such a fun day, and we felt in good hands the whole day. We spotted elk and birds. Paul was incredibly knowledgeable and we learnt so much. It was our first time in the Rockies so we appreciated how convenient the trip was. We would definitely recommend this trip!

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the highest national parks in the country, with an elevation that spans from 7,600 feet above sea level to 14,259 feet (or almost three miles) above sea level. Beyond its towering elevation, the mountainous Continental Divide runs through the park, along with the highest continuous paved road in the United States (the Trail Ridge Road), which provides visitors with beautiful high-elevation drives. Those interested in exploring on foot will find over 350 miles of trails, many of which lead to untouched wilderness areas.

“Rocky Mountain National Park provides exceptional access to wild places for visitors to recreate and experience solitude and outstanding scenery,” explained Kyle Patterson, the management specialist and public affairs officer for Rocky Mountain National Park, in an interview with Travel + Leisure.

Planning Your Visit

John Covert/Getty Images

Rocky Mountain National Park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but some areas may be closed seasonally or due to weather conditions. No matter when you visit, you’ll need to purchase a park pass. A single-day vehicle pass is $30, while a seven-day vehicle pass is $35.

The park is completely cashless, so you’ll need to buy your entrance pass online via Recreation.gov or by using a credit/debit card or digital payment at one of the park’s entrances. If you only have cash, you can purchase a park pass from the Rocky Mountain Conservancy Nature Stores at three of the park’s visitor centers: Beaver Meadows, Fall River, or Kawuneeche.

If you’re visiting during the park’s busy season, late May to mid-October, you’ll also need to arrange a timed-entry permit. There are two types of timed-entry permits: one that provides access to the entire park, and one that allows you to visit everything except the Bear Lake Road Corridor (the most heavily used portion of the park). Both can be reserved on Recreation.gov starting May 1, 2024 and cost only the $2 Recreation.gov processing fee. With a timed-entry permit, you can enter Rocky Mountain National Park within a two-hour  window of your entry time with no set departure time. For more, visit the park’s timed-entry information page .

There are four visitor centers in the park: Beaver Meadows, Fall River, Kawuneeche, and Alpine. Beaver Meadows and Fall River are located on the eastern side of the park near the city of Estes Park, Colorado, while Kawunechee is located on the western side of the park near Granby, Colorado. They remain open year-round. Alpine, which is on the northern side of the park and is the highest-elevation visitor center in the National Park System, closes in the winter.

During the busy season, you can also visit the Moraine Park Discovery Center near the eastern entrances.

arinahabich/Getty Images

If you’re staying in or flying into Denver, head west to Estes Park, Colorado, the base for the two eastern park entrances and visitor centers, Beaver Meadows and Fall River. If you’re coming to Rocky Mountain National Park from the western or southwestern part of the state, your closest entrance and visitor center will be Kawuneeche, which is near the town of Grand Lake , north of Granby, Colorado.

There is no public transportation from nearby cities to the park, so you will need a car to explore Rocky Mountain National Park. From late May to mid-October, you can drive the park’s iconic Trail Ridge Road, which connects Grand Lake and Estes Park.

Best Time to Visit

epicurean/Getty Images

The best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is typically fall, when everything is still open but the summer crowds have dispersed. According to Claire Molle, the communications manager of Visit Estes Park , “Fall is a terrific time to visit Estes Park and RMNP, with gorgeous fall colors and the chance to witness the fascinating elk rut. Weather seems to also be terrific in September and early October.”

She notes that winter and spring are also fantastic times to visit, noting that even though certain parts of the park are closed (including Trail Ridge Road), “Winters in RMNP evoke serene tranquility, especially during snowshoeing excursions. You can find terrific trails to snowshoe in RMNP starting around late November through early May!”

Patterson calls out the solitude of winter (and frozen waterfalls), and notes that while the summer wildflower season can be stunning, “Late May through mid-October is the busiest part of the year with high visitation.”

Mark C Stevens/Getty Images

Trail Ridge Road

This paved road connects the two main entrances of the park — Grand Lake and Estes Park — showcasing the visual wonder of Rocky Mountain National Park. The road offers sweeping Rocky Mountain views in all directions. Trail Ridge Road takes most people between four and eight hours, depending on how many viewpoints and trails you want to stop at.

Patterson notes that the route “is the highest continuous paved road in the United States with 11 miles above treeline.  There are a number of pull-offs and short trails to experience the magic of the alpine tundra and top-of-the-world, 360-degree views.”

Trail Ridge Road is normally open from Memorial Day to mid-October, weather permitting.

Sheep Lakes

Not far from the Fall River entrance is Sheep Lakes, an open area that offers a dramatic view of Horseshoe Park, which was carved by ancient glaciers. According to the Rocky Mountain National Park website, the “beautiful meadow is a great place to view wildlife. The area is named for the bighorn sheep that come down from the mountainside to lick mud for nutrients. Sheep Lakes also sees coyotes, ground squirrels, and elk.”

The parking lot at Sheep Lakes is open 24 hours a day, year-round, but it's best visited in the fall when the annual elk mating season takes place. The adjacent Sheep Lakes Information Station is closed in the winter and spring.

Holzwarth Historic Site

For a glimpse into the park’s human history, visit the Holzwarth Historic Site. The series of buildings provide a peek into what life looked like in the 1920s, when the Holzwarth family homesteaded on 160 acres high in the mountains.

The grounds are open year-round, but entry into the historic buildings is only allowed in the summer (typically Memorial Day to Labor Day).

Best Hikes

MargaretW/Getty Images

If you’re not much of a hiker but you want to stretch your legs and see the views, head to the Bear Lake Trailhead on the east side of the park. The route goes around the lake in a view-packed, half-mile journey. The route is wheelchair accessible, and offers stunning views of Hallett Peak and the Continental Divide from the trail.

It’s worth noting that the trail can be very busy in the summer and that parking is limited. To be safe, park at the Park & Ride lot and hop on the free summer shuttle to the trailhead.

Emerald Lake

The Emerald Lake hike also begins at the Bear Lake Trailhead, but tends to be a little quieter than the Bear Lake loop. (That said, the parking and shuttle advice above still applies.)

Molle says,”It's a great option for families or those who might not know how far they are wanting to hike because it will take you first to Nymph Lake, then to Dream Lake, and finally to Emerald Lake about two miles up. All three lakes are breathtaking, and the trail allows you to pick whichever lake you would like as your destination depending on how ambitious you are feeling.”

For the more adventurous and experienced hiker, Patterson recommends hiking to Chasm Lake on the east side of the park. The lake sits at the base of Longs Peak, the park’s highest point and one of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks. The out-and-back trail to Chasm Lake is 8.4 miles and requires a steady climb through a subalpine forest and into the alpine tundra.

Coyote Valley

This easy, out-and-back trail is located on the west side of the park, near Grand Lake and Granby. The hike is one mile, roundtrip and is wheelchair accessible. The route runs along the Colorado River, which draws local wildlife, including elk and moose.

Cascade Falls

This hiking trail is also located on the quieter, western side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The out-and-back trail is almost seven miles long and passes through open meadows, dense pine forest, and along the river, in addition to taking hikers to a beautiful cascade that tumbles onto pure granite rock.

Sparty1711/Getty Images

Wildlife spotting is one of the main reasons people visit Rocky Mountain National Park, which is home to large wild animals, including elk, bighorn sheep, moose, and bears. The park is home to a large elk herd, numbering between 600 to 800 in the winter , and around 350 bighorn sheep. There is also a small population of moose and black bears.

According to the park’s website, “wildlife watching is rated the number-one activity by a vast majority of Rocky's three million annual visitors.”

One of the most interesting times to view the elk herd is in the fall, during the rut, or mating season. Sheeps Lake is a popular viewing spot, as is any place in the park where the meadow and forest meet. According to the national park’s website, “Elk spend much of their time at or above treeline during the summer, moving to lower elevations in the fall, winter, and spring.”

Bighorn Sheep

The best place to see bighorn sheep is at the aptly named Sheep Lakes from May to mid-August.

Moose are more commonly seen on the western side of the park along the Colorado River in the Kawuneeche Valley. They tend to frequent the willow thickets set along the river.

Black Bears

Black bears make a point to avoid humans , so they are rarely seen in the park. The sightings, while rare, take place in the summer once the bears have come out of hibernation. It’s worth noting that contrary to their name, black bears can also be dark brown, cinnamon-colored, or almost blonde.

Places to Stay

Christian Harder

In addition to lots of backcountry, hike-to camping that requires a permit, Rocky Mountain National Park has five campgrounds with sites that can be reserved in advance and accessed by a car.

Patterson notes that “They are very popular, and demand normally exceeds supply.” She also warns that Moraine Park Campground, which is listed below and is the park's largest campground, is currently closed. It will reopen for summer 2024, but the timing is unknown.

All the campgrounds but Longs Peak Campground must be reserved in advance with a rolling six-month window.

Campgrounds

Aspenglen Campground: This campground has 52 RV and tent sites including 13 that are for tents only. There is no water and no RV dump station. This is the only campground open year-round.

Glacier Basin Campground: Glacier Basin has 150 sites, along with lots of amenities — including firewood for sale, potable water, a dump station, and helpful staff on site. It is only open from late May through mid-September, weather dependent.

Moraine Park Campground: This is the largest campground in the park with 244 campsites. The park website notes that it is “closed until early June 2024,” while Patterson said that the exact opening date is still unknown and might be later into the summer than planned. When the campground restoration project is complete, the large campground will have new walkways, parking areas, and amenities, including 15 additional wheelchair-accessible campsites, 90 new food storage boxes, and electrical hook-ups for around 60 campsites. The Moraine Park Campground also has potable water, an RV dump station, and staff on site.

Longs Peak Campground: This is a tent-only campground (no RVs allowed). It typically opens in July and closes in early September. It is also the only first-come, first-served campground in the park.

Timber Creek Campground: Timber Creek is the only campground on the quieter, western side of the park. This campground has 98 RV and tent sites, including 30 that are reserved for tents only. There is potable water, an RV dump station, and staff on site. Timber Creek is only open in the summer season.

Trailborn Rocky Mountains: The buzz around this new hotel is well founded. Trailborn Rocky Mountains , which opened in late 2023 in Estes Park, was specifically designed to serve national park visitors. The well-thought-out basecamp is clean and modern with just enough amenities to make it stand out — including on-site dining, pools, and an outdoor space with fire pits.

“The Trailborn stands out as a modern and well-equipped motel-style lodging, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts,” said Molle.

Grand Lake Lodge: This property is located on the western side of the park in the town of Grand Lake. Most guests stay in the historic cabins, which have been updated with a contemporary look, but there are also four “Jupes,” or tents, with high ceilings and solar-power-generated electricity.

There are no dining options inside Rocky Mountain National Park, so you’ll need to plan ahead by packing a picnic or returning to town for lunch.

The Rock Inn Mountain Tavern

The Rock Inn Mountain Tavern is one of the closest restaurants to the entrance to the national park. It is also much more than a restaurant — it’s a community hub with near-constant live music and delicious food.

Poppy's Pizza & Grill

This eatery is one of Molle’s favorites. It’s got an excellent riverfront location in Estes Park and has an outdoor patio where you can enjoy one of their specialty pies or sandwiches paired with a Colorado-brewed beer.

Claire's Restaurant and Bar

This spot in Estes Park is another of Molle’s top picks. Claire’s has a wide variety of dishes, including BBQ, fish, and burgers. The establishment opened in 1992 and continues to be a favorite — it helps that it has a lovely outdoor patio.

This trail requires physical fitness, endurance, and prior experience with high altitude hiking. There are numerous companies which offer guided hikes to the summit of Longs Peak. Below are a few of the most popular options:

GPS Self-Guided Tour

If you plan to drive the park on your own, I highly recommend a GPS based audio guide. Guide Along is an audio tour downloaded to your phone which will guide you through Rocky Mountain National Park. Not only does it supply tons of information about the park, but it also provides tips about where to pull over for the best viewpoints and easy, accessible trails worth stopping for.

The guided audio follows your GPS, therefore provides information in real time. Plus, it allows you to set the pace of the tour!

I’ve used Guide Along for many national parks, including Rocky Mountain, and couldn’t recommend it more!

The audio tour is only a few dollars. You can purchase it here:  Guide Along Rocky Mountain National Park .

Winter Tours Of Rocky Mountain National Park

Backcountry skiing .

Rocky Mountain National Park doesn’t have any designated ski areas, however backcountry skiing is popular here. The park’s acres of untracked terrain are full of fresh powder, excellent for skiing.

Backcountry skiing is not easy here, and it’s imperative to be aware of conditions and avalanche danger within the park. For this reason, a professional guide is a safe bet.

There are a variety of tour packages available, check out more information below:

Sledding

Above I said RMNP doesn’t have any designated skiing areas, however that hasn’t always been the case. RMNP’s Hidden Valley Ski Area was in operation during the 1950’s.

While the resort’s long closed, the area is now extremely popular for something a little more low key, sledding.

The current sledding hill was formerly a ski bunny slope, meaning it has a gentle grade, perfect for sledding.

Join a guided tour to enjoy sledding in Rocky Mountain National Park, and see a few of the park’s highlights along the way.

This is definitely the most family-friendly tour Rocky Mountain National Park has to offer in winter. You’re sure to have a great time!

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is an excellent way to see RMNP. Hikes which are normally congested with visitors come summer, free up considerably when snow covers the trails.

Explore winter trails, enjoy solitude, and appreciate the beauty of nature while snowshoeing. With the right equipment and preparation, snowshoeing can be a delightful and rewarding activity in the park’s winter wonderland.

This is easily one of my favorite things to do in Rocky Mountain National Park during winter.

Ice Climbing

With frozen waterfalls, glistening ice formations, and alpine landscapes, the park offers a variety of opportunities for ice climbing enthusiasts come winter.

It’s a physically demanding and technically challenging activity which requires proper preparation, experience, and knowledge. All of this makes it a good idea to ice climb with a guide in Rocky Mountain National Park.

WHEN TO HIKE Rocky Mountain National Park

The Colorado Rockies offer phenomenal year-round outdoor adventure. However, from a strictly hiker perspective, the best times of year are summer and fall. Summer is the peak season. Mosquitoes in Colorado do not tend to be very bad, which opens up the entire summer to trekking opportunities, unlike the northern mountains Wyoming and Montana, where the mosquitoes make backpacking in July hit and miss in terms of comfort and difficulty. Colorado also thaws out more quickly than its northern siblings and so the “summer” begins earlier. Great hikes can be had beginning in June and the wonderful summer temperatures last through August. In September, fall begins to creep in, and with it a truly magical transformation in Colorado. With massive elk herds, the bulls of which bugle in the fall as part of their mating rituals, and vast Aspen stands that turn deep yellow, orange and red, fall is truly a spectacular time of year to hike the Rockies. By early to mid November the mountains are becoming less hospitable, but for the hardier backcountry travelers, this time of year is still prime time. By mid November winter is normally setting in and the backcountry becomes a home for winter recreational enthusiasts, sleeping bears, and hardy mountain creatures.

PREPARING FOR YOUR Rockies TRIP

First, be sure you’re physically prepared for the trip you’ve signed up for. That means hitting the gym or exercising outdoors several days per week in the months leading up to your vacation. We heartily recommend the Stairmaster as a fantastic training tool for hikers. Additionally, you’ll want to be acclimatized for the higher elevations of the mountains. Plan on arriving a couple days early and spending some time in Denver or Estes Park so your body can produce additional red blood cells that are required at higher elevations. Finally, hydrate hydrate hydrate! Especially at altitude you can easily become dehydrated, but also because Colorado is a dry climate. If you’re coming from a most climate, your body may become rapidly dehydrated if you’re not drinking plenty of liquids. Finally, mix some electrolyte mix in with your water to avoid hyponatremia , which happens when you exercise and drink lots of water without salt and other minerals your body needs.

If all the park campgrounds are full, there are still plenty of great places to camp near Rocky Mountain National Park.

Introduction to Rocky Mountain National Park

Adapted from Rocky Mountain National Park: The Complete Guide

Located in northern Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park protects some of the most beautiful scenery in the West. With elevations ranging from 8,000 to 14,000 feet, “Rocky” is the highest national park in America. It protects over 100 peaks taller than 11,000 feet. Cool streams tumble down from the mountains, feeding pristine lakes and drifting through lush meadows. For those who love dramatic alpine scenery, it’s hard to beat Rocky Mountain National Park.

Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in America, twists through the heart of the park, topping out at 12,183 feet. Roughly 11 miles of Trail Ridge Road lies above treeline, exposing a dazzling expanse of delicate alpine tundra. Along the way, Trail Ridge Road passes Alpine Visitor Center — the highest national park visitor center in America — and crosses the Continental Divide. On either side of Trail Ridge Road there are dozens of great hikes. All told, over 350 miles of hiking trails crisscross the park.

And then there’s the epic story behind the scenery — a tale of colliding continents, erupting volcanoes, and Ice Age glaciers. Today abundant wildlife roams the park’s 415 square miles. Elk, deer, moose, and bighorn sheep are just some of the animals you might see. For many people, wildlife watching is one of the highlights of the park.

With so much to see and do, Rocky Mountain National Park can be overwhelming. My full-color guidebook, Rocky Mountain National Park: The Complete Guide , makes visiting easy. It covers the basics and puts the best of the park at your fingertips. Although I’ve saved the best travel tips for my book, listed below are some helpful resources to help you plan an amazing trip.

A beginner's guide to visiting Rocky Mountain National Park

Summer Hull

During this time of socially distant and budget-friendly travel, few destinations have the allure of a national park .

Rocky Mountain National Park is a classic national treasure. It might easily define and encapsulate the best of what a national park can be. It has snow-capped peaks that touch the sky and clear air that awakens the lungs like peppermint candy. It has proud and stately evergreen fir, spruce and pine trees that share a residency with the resplendent aspen that explode in color every year as fall arrives.

For more TPG travel tips and deals delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our free daily newsletter .

There are meadows carved by long-ago glaciers that now serve as playgrounds for mighty elk, nimble deer, the plodding moose, the beaver, coyote and even the visiting humans. There are waterfalls that roar with melting snow and gleaming glacial lakes. Rivers and streams filled with rainbow, cutthroat, brown and brook trout flow through rocky gorges and meander lazily across grassy fields. Wildflowers bloom as spring turns toward summer and snow blankets the park when the days grow short and cold.

If you've never been to Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park, here's everything you need to know to plan your first visit.

Rocky Mountain National Park basics

In a normal year, Rocky Mountain National Park attracts well over 4 million visitors to its 415 square miles that are home to 147 lakes, dozens of different mammals (bear, moose and bighorn sheep among them), 355 miles of hiking trails and the Continental Divide. This park surges in popularity from June through September, but this summer, things are a bit different, as you need to make an advance reservation to enter the park to help control crowding.

Rocky Mountain National Park has been around for more than 100 years, and while you need to plan ahead to maximize your visit more now than ever -- the allure of hiking around Bear Lake, Emerald Lake or even driving Trail Ridge Road from the comfort of your own vehicle stands the test of time, even in a world still battling COVID-19 .

Assuming you have a reservation to enter, admission costs $25 for a one-day pass for a single car full of visitors. A single visitor on foot or bike can get in for $15. But really, the better deal — at least if you plan to visit multiple national parks in a year — is likely an America the Beautiful Pass that costs $80 per year.

If you have a 4th grader in your group, remember that you can enter national parks for free that year from September through August.

A senior pass , available to those 62 and older, allows lifetime access into national parks for just $80, which has to be one of the best deals in the travel industry.

How to get to Rocky Mountain National Park

Getting to Rocky Mountain National Park is part of the fun. In good driving conditions, the national park is about 90 minutes northwest of Denver . In most cases, renting a car is the best way to get to Rocky Mountain National Park and around Colorado. However, another option is the Estes Park Shuttle which operates from the Denver area for $95 round-trip or $55 one-way.

The drive on U.S. 34 from Loveland through Big Thompson Canyon, Highway 36 from Lyons to Estes with the St. Vrain River running shotgun and the Peak to Peak Highway from roughly Idaho Springs to Estes Park are all fantastic rides that complement and supplement the grandeur and beauty of this natural space.

Top things to do and see in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is a park for all seasons and a park for all ages. It's a user-friendly park as many of its rewards are easily accessed or viewed from the roadside.

Before you actually enter Rocky Mountain National Park, you're likely going to or through Estes Park.

(Photo by Buddy Smith/The Points Guy)

In Estes Park, you can stroll through downtown and pop into the various shops and restaurants. Or, you can book a more active adventure such as horseback riding or whitewater rafting. And if you like taffy and sweet treats, you're in luck as there are saltwater taffy shops in Estes Park dating back to the 1930s. That may sound like a weird thing to offer in a mountain town, but it became a popular concession in Estes Park almost a century ago and is still worth a calorie splurge today.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

Unless you're into camping or just coming in for a day trip, you may be spending the night in Estes Park, so you'll have plenty of time to check out Antonios Real New York Pizza, Rock Inn Mountain Tavern or Scratch Deli and Bakery -- all of which receive high marks from visitors.

Trail Ridge Road

Trail Ridge Road has been inspiring awe in those who make the drive since 1931. The road is only open seasonally, often from around Memorial Day until mid-October, but that's very weather dependent. It could open later and close earlier, depending on snow and other conditions.

rocky mountains tour guide

If you time it right, you're in for a treat as you quickly gain elevation and drive the highest continuously paved highway in the country. Trail Ridge Road climbs about 4,000 feet in elevation and goes above the treeline up to a max elevation of 12,183 feet for a portion of the 48-mile drive that takes you from Estes Park to Grand Lake. It's often between 20 and 30 degrees colder at the top of Trail Ridge Road than it is in Estes Park or Grand Lake.

The Alpine Visitors Center is a popular stop just past the road's highest point. A restaurant, restrooms, exhibits, valuable information, year-round snow and a well-stocked gift shop can be found at that high-altitude stop. (You might be browsing for a new sweatshirt at this stop since it's probably going to be chilly!)

rocky mountains tour guide

From the comfort of your car, you can enjoy awe-inspiring views (prepare to stop and take pictures), do some wildlife spotting and take in the trees, wildflowers, lakes and more. While you could do it a bit faster if you absolutely had to, we recommend budgeting at least a half-day for this drive.

Fall River Road

Fall River Road is perfect for nostalgic travelers.

(Photo by Buddy Smith/The Points Guy)

It was the original road into the heart of the park, and has always been considered a "motor nature trail," as it's mostly gravel, is one-way uphill, has its share of switchbacks and keeps you so close to nature you can reach out the window and touch it.

It intersects back with Trail Ridge Road just below the Alpine Visitors Center.

Bear Lake is encircled by an easy and reasonably flat trail, a little under 1 mile in length and accessed at the end of Bear Lake Road, just 9 miles from the turn-off at Highway 36. But, be warned: This is a popular area, so you should get an early start in the morning.

(Photo by Buddy Smith/The Points Guy)

Other hikes of varying length and difficulty originate nearby. Hikes to Dream, Nymph and Emerald Lakes are often included in a visit to the Bear Lake-area. Visitors can also walk on the beautiful valley floor of Moraine Park. You'll feel as if you're becoming a part of the park there.

Related: 8 tips for your next hike

Emerald Lake

This hike is easily combined with the one around Bear Lake, though it's a bit longer at around 3 miles. While it's not too strenuous, remember that the trail can be laced with snow as late as June. This is also a very busy area of the park, so the earlier in the day you can start, the better.

Where to stay in Rocky Mountain National Park

Campgrounds.

If you want to stay in Rocky Mountain National Park, you better bring your tent or RV (just be aware there are no RV hook-ups at the campsites).

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

There are multiple drive-to camping sites within the park that start around $30 per night, but you need to plan ahead. Typically, reservations open six months in advance. Looking at this summer, there's spotty availability in July and more beginning in August at both the Glacier Basin Campground and Moraine Park Campground. The other three campgrounds in the park do not have a reopening date at this time.

If camping is not your cup of tea, you can bed down in Estes Park, which is just a few minutes away.

(Photo by Buddy Smith/The Points Guy)

If you want to redeem points, the Ridgeline Hotel Ascend Collection Estes Park is often available for between 12,000 and 25,000 Choice Hotel points .

Travelers should also consider the historic Stanley Hotel that first opened in 1909 -- and yes, this is the same Stanley Hotel that inspired the Overlook Hotel in "The Shining."

Rent a cabin

Travelers can also head to Airbnb or VRBO and rent a cabin or home in the area. Whether you want a one-bedroom cabin, or you're looking for a space large enough for your entire crew, there are a number of properties in the area that often range from $150 to $350 per night, depending on the size of the cabin you're searching for.

Rocky Mountain National Park evolves with the changing seasons. While the summer months and early fall are the most popular months to visit the park, a winter visit can also be quite magical.

rocky mountains tour guide

It's hard to beat mid- to late-September. The weather is comfortable but with an invigorating chill that makes a fireplace welcome and a cozy parka essential. The skies are spectacular, the aspens are ablaze, the animals are busy and the park is generally still fully open and accessible.

That time of year, the elk are in full rut and are everywhere: In town, on the roads, across the hills -- absolutely everywhere. By then, the season's first snowfall has fallen in higher elevations.

Trail Ridge Road is a glorious "Road to the Sky" that's open typically from June through October and is usually unusable from November through May, when it's blanketed in feet of snow.

You can hike to Emerald Lake in the warm summer sun or when it's encased in ice in February. The intense quiet of a summer night is in stark contrast to the echo of the bugling elk come September. The thunder of the water roaring over Alberta Falls in June becomes more of a gentle cascade in October. In other words, the park is a true wonder year-round -- just factor in unpredictable weather, especially in the late fall and winter months.

But the best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park is truly whenever you can go.

Bottom line

There's no shortage of beautiful valleys and vistas in the Centennial State, but even with the wide variety of natural wonders here, Rocky Mountain National Park still stands out as a must-visit destination for those who appreciate the great outdoors. Just be aware that the park is quite popular — so popular that, for the first time ever this summer, you have to make a reservation to even enter . If you want to camp inside the park, plan well ahead for that, too.

But, the reward for all that planning and hard work is a spectacular trip to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Shaka Guide's Rocky Mountain National Park Itinerary

November 28, 2023

Introduction

Rocky mountain national park

Rocky Mountain National Park covers over 400 magical square miles of Colorado’s raw land and majestic mountains. That means it’s bigger than New York City!

It’s also home to over 350 miles of hiking trails, ranging from short and sweet, to traversing snowy summits for days.

You’ll find:

  • scenic overlooks
  • different ecosystems
  • aspen forests
  • lots of wildlife!

Yup, that means moose, elk, bighorn sheep, birds, and small mammals. There are also over 140 species of butterflies in the park.

That’s more than most states have. But it’s more than a naturalist’s dreamland.

The park also has a deep human history, from Native Americans to the first homesteaders, and even a once-booming tourist industry!

Shaka Guide’s Rocky Mountain National Park tour lists all the best things to see and do. But, you’ll still lead the way.

That’s because you’re free to make the stops you want and pass the ones you don’t. You’re on no one’s time but your own.

rocky mountain national park tour map

With over 30 stops, this tour will take about four to six hours to complete.

That’s around two hours of driving, with extra time to get out and explore.

The tour begins in Estes Park just outside the park’s eastern entrance, and cruises west to Grand Lake.

There, you’re free to head back the way you came or keep going west. But we recommend exploring Grand Lake first.

Important Information

Rocky Mountain National Park Gets crowded! In fact, so crowded that from late May through mid-October, you need a Timed Entry Permit Reservation to get in.

There are two different options that you could do or don’t, including Bear Lake Road. If you’re visiting in the off-season, you’ll have much more freedom with entry.

1. Estes Park

estes park with log cabin near a river

This beautiful town is the place to stop before your trip.

There’s one seasonal cafe and no gas in Rocky Mountain National Park, so make sure to stock up on all the supplies you need before you get there.

There are numerous picnic areas in the park, so keep that in mind when shopping.

Estes Park has plenty of shops and gas stations, and if you’re coming from farther away, you’ll have even more options.

2. Beaver Meadows Visitor Center

view from beaver meadows visitor center

Approximate Time: 10-15 minutes

Here’s a perfect place to pick up a trail map.

It’s chock full of information that’ll help you decide which trails are right before you.

It also has park maps, bathrooms, gifts, and souvenirs.

3. Moraine Park Discovery Center

brown house with american flag pole

This is a wonderful place to learn about the park’s geology and history. In fact, the building itself has quite a historical significance.

It’s the last standing building that was part of the Moraine Park Lodge, a place popular with tourists when the park was a popular vacation destination.

4. Bear Lake Trail

Approximate Time: 15 minutes-2.5 hours

At the Bear Lake Trailhead, you’ll have the option to hike several different trails.

The quickest, and most popular, is the Bear Lake Trail which takes around 15 minutes.

But there are others that range from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours.

5. Glacier Gorge Trailhead

lake with pine trees and mountain

Approximate Time: 1 hour, 45 minutes

Like most trailheads in the park, this one also offers access to several different trails.

Many are long though! If you’re up for an easy, just over a three-hour hike, we recommend the Glacier Gorge Trail. It’s popular for birding and camping.

6. Bierstadt Lake

lake with pine trees

Now we’re stepping it up to a moderately challenging trail. Just over three miles long, this trail is popular for snowshoeing, horseback riding, and of course, a gorgeous lake.

7. Horseshoe Park Viewpoint

mountains with grasslands below

Approximate Time: 5 minutes

What gives this valley its name is the glacial melt that carved it into the shape of a horseshoe millions of years ago.

Today, it’s home to spacious meadows that attract wildlife.

8. Sheep Lakes Information Station

Approximate Time: 15-30 minutes

As the name suggests, here you’ll find park information and exhibits.

It’s located right by the four beautiful Sheep Lakes.

It’s also a popular spot for bighorn sheep and elk.

9. Alluvial Fan Trail

rocks below a mountain

Approximate Time: 10 minutes

What’s an alluvial fan, you ask?

Well, it’s where water cascades over boulders moved there by a massive flood in 1982.

It's a sort of waterfall.

This easy trail passes right by it.

10. Beaver Ponds Viewpoint

grass with river

Here you can take a five-minute walk along a boardwalk through wetlands created by beavers.

Long ago beavers built a dam and organic material gathered behind it.

Once it collapsed, that soil flowed out, creating the wetlands there today.

11. Hidden Valley Trail & Picnic Area

forest

At this peaceful stop, you’ll find an easy, half-mile nature trail, picnic tables, and flush toilets.

It’s a lovely place to stretch your legs and breathe in the fresh air.

12. Many Parks Curve Overlook

Here’s another overlook! From this one, you’ll see:

  • Horseshoe Park
  • Moraine Park, and
  • Beaver Meadows

There are viewing platforms around the entire curve for different perspectives.

13. Rainbow Curve Overlook

overview from rainbow curve

And another! This stop is a viewpoint above the treeline.

You’ll see unobstructed views of nearby peaks and valleys.

14. Forest Canyon Overlook

range of mountains

A short walk through the tundra at the overlook affords visitors a view down into a river flowing through a canyon.

You’ll see Hayden Gorge and Gorge Lakes.

15. Tundra Communities Trailhead

stone formations

Approximate Time: 30 minutes

This one-mile trail features interpretive signs about the flora and fauna that live in the tundra.

You’ll also get to see the Mushroom Rocks, boulders that are over a billion years old and they look like, well, you can imagine.

16. Lava Cliffs Overlook

green mountain

The cliffs you’ll see from here are made of the only volcanic rock in the park.

They’re part of the Never Summer Mountain Range and are actually the park’s youngest.

17. Gore Range Overlook

snowy mountains overview

Here you’ll see awesome views of the Gore Range, the Never Summer Mountains, and the flat top of Longs Peak.

18.  Alpine Visitor Center

outside of a visitor center ina snowy terrain

At the highest elevation visitor center in any national park, you’ll find a seasonal cafe and the usual offerings from a place like this.

This is the only place where you can grab a bite to eat in the park. There are also epic views from the nearby Alpine Ridge Trail.

19. Medicine Bow Curve

From this gorgeous overlook, you’ll see the Medicine Bow Mountains, La Poudre River, and Wyoming on a clear day. Keep an eye out for wildlife too.

20. Milner Pass

continental divide signboard

You’ll stand right on the Continental Divide here. It’s also home to the Ute Trailhead and views of Poudre Lake.

21. Lake Irene Picnic Area

lake with pine trees

Approximate Time: 15 minutes

This is home to a half-mile loop around Lake Irene. Across the street from there is Sheep Rock, where bighorn sheep like to sunbathe.

22. Farview Curve Overlook

This overlook lies at 10,000 feet elevation! It offers views of Kawuneeche Valley, the Colorado River, the Never Summer Range, and Jackstraw Mountain.

23. Colorado River Trailhead

As usual, there are several trails here to choose from, ranging from easy to strenuous. We recommend the Colorado River trail.

24. Beaver Creek Picnic Area

picnic area with mountain overview

Approximate Time: 5-15 minutes

During fall, it’s common to see elk run here. It has tables, toilets, and fire grates.

25. Beaver Ponds Picnic Area

Another picnic area! You’ll find it offers great bird watching, two ponds, tables, and toilets.

26. Holzwarth Historic Site

holzwarth historic site signboard

Originally homesteaded by early settlers, this now offers a 1.5-mile stroll around the land. Some original structures are still standing.

27. Bowen Mountain & Colorado River Overlook

As the name suggests, this roadside overlook offers views of Bowen Mountain and the Colorado River.

28. Bowen Baker Trailhead

Trailheads of different levels can be found here. Even if you don’t hike, it’s a wonderful place to spend some time.

There’s a gorgeous meadow, picnic tables, and bathrooms.

29. Coyote Valley Trailhead

Approximate Time: 20 minutes

This is an easy, riverside, one-mile trail that’s wheelchair-accessible and stroller-friendly.

30. Bowen Gulch Trailhead

Approximate Time: 5-10 minutes

Since this trail is 15 miles long, the attraction is walking along the river and exploring this beautiful area.

Take a stroll along part of it and turn back when you’re done enjoying the beautiful scenery.

31. Harbinson Meadows

plain view of meadows

Originally homesteaded by two sisters, today this area is a gorgeous meadow with picnic tables. It’s also a popular place with wildlife.

32. Kawuneeche Visitor Center

What’s unique about this visitor center is it has a Rocky Mountain Conservancy Bookstore.

So if you saw or heard about something today you want to learn more about, here’s an opportunity.

33. End Point - Grand Lake

So you made it through Rocky Mountain National Park and now you’re in Grand Lake!

There’s still more to see and enjoy in this quaint town.

Food ranges from simple to high-end, and there’s even a museum and historical society.

Of course, there’s also that beautiful lake! So be sure to explore at least a little more before leaving town.

Snow-capped peaks, scenic grandeur: What to expect at Rocky Mountain National Park

rocky mountains tour guide

Rocky Mountain National Park is no hidden gem.

Over 4.1 million people visited the park last year, making it the fifth most visited national park in America, according to National Park Service statistics.

It’s so busy in the summer that timed entry reservations are required for a good chunk of each day.

Here’s what draws so many people to Rocky Mountain and what travelers should know about the latest national park in USA TODAY’s yearlong series .

What is so special about Rocky Mountain National Park?

If you close your eyes and think of the southern Rockies, “Rocky Mountain National Park captures all of that,” said the park’s Public Affairs Officer Kyle Patterson.

“Snow capped peaks, amazing recreational opportunities for 12 months out of the year, watchable wildlife , and scenic grandeur,” she said that’s what visitors always extol.

She added that the Continental Divide runs right through the park, and the park is the headwaters for numerous major rivers.

What is the best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park?

The answer depends on your interests.

“Do you want to see snow and ice, or do you want to see wildflowers and more greenery?” Patterson asked. “Are you interested in hiking? Are you interested in snowshoeing?” The park has more than 350 miles of hiking trails .

The busy season is late May through mid-October when temperatures are milder, all roads are open, and entry reservations are required during certain times of the day.

“My favorite part about Rocky is just how different it is depending upon what season you visit the park,” Patterson said.

What city is closest to Rocky Mountain National Park? What town should I stay in?

“We have two wonderful communities that are right at the doorstep of Rocky Mountain National Park,” Patterson said. “Estes Park on the east side and Grand Lake on the west side.”

She added that about 80% of visitors enter through Estes Park, which is also closer to Denver and its international airport. However, she said visitors enjoy both gateway communities.

“Estes Park and Grand Lake both have wonderful amenities from lodging to restaurants to other activities that people can do when they're visiting this area,” she said.

Can you drive through Rocky Mountain National Park without a reservation?

Yes, but it depends on when you visit.

Timed entry reservations are required to access most of the park between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. from May 24 through Oct. 14.

However, if you want to access the park’s busy Bear Lake Road, you’ll need a different type of reservation called Timed Entry+. That reservation grants access to all the parks' roads but is specifically required for Bear Lake Road between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 24 through Oct. 20.

If you enter outside of those hours or dates, you won’t need a reservation, but it’s important to note that the park’s popular Trail Ridge Road , which connects the east and west sides of the park, is closed through the winter.

How long does it take to drive through Rocky Mountain National Park?

“If somebody's coming when Trail Ridge Road is open, we recommend people to give themselves at least three hours to drop over the top of the park,” Patterson said.

That also allows time to stop and take in views and shorter hikes along the way.

“You never know what you might see as you drive along the road, and you want to give yourself plenty of time,” she said. “Also, the speeds of travel on the road should be slow … It’s not like you’re driving a highway.”

How much time do I need to see Rocky Mountain National Park?

“Because we're so close to a large population in Colorado we have people that will come up here for two hours,” Patterson said. Locals can visit any time, but she said it would be “a bummer” to only spend a few hours in the park on a first visit.

She said the average visit is around two days, though you can stay longer to experience more.

Which Native tribes are tied to Rocky Mountain National Park?

“Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the oldest national parks in the country. Rocky was established in 1915,” Patterson said, but she and the park point out that Native Americans have stewarded the land for thousands of years.

“What is now Rocky Mountain National Park is part of the traditional homeland and territory of many present-day Tribal nations including, the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, Montana; Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, Oklahoma; Comanche Nation, Oklahoma; Eastern Shoshone Tribe of the Wind River Reservation, Wyoming; Kiowa Indian Tribe of Oklahoma, Northern Arapaho Tribe of the Wind River Reservation, Wyoming; Northern Cheyenne Tribe of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, Montana; Southern Ute Indian Tribe of the Southern Ute Reservation, Colorado; Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah & Ouray Reservation, Utah; and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe of the Ute Mountain Reservation, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah,” the park acknowledges on its website.

What else should travelers know about Rocky Mountain?

It can feel like winter into May at the park, and winter can also creep into fall.

Weather can also change rapidly and differ dramatically, depending on the elevation. The high altitude can also affect travelers who aren’t used to it.

“Just giving yourself some time to acclimate and taking care of yourself, like drinking lots of water, is really crucial because you can get dehydrated here really quickly,” she said. “Being prepared for traveling to a place like Rocky will make all the difference in the world.”

Rocky Mountain at a Glance

Why visit rocky mountain national park.

The Rocky Mountains are huge. They are the mountain chain that divides the watershed in North America. The park itself is 415 square miles or 265,807 acres in size. It offers a diverse landscape to discover, from its mountain meadows to its peaks of over 14,000 feet to its pristine mountain lakes.

While in Rocky Mountain National Park, hike on one of its 300 miles of trails. You might see some wildlife during your trip. Trail Ridge Road offers eye-popping views without having to climb. If visiting, remember to pack a picnic since the food service is limited.

East Entrance vs. West Entrance

Since 80% of the visitors use the eastern entrance, consider entering Rocky Mountain National Park’s western entrance near Grand Lake. Especially if you didn’t reserve a Day Use Pass for entering the park, enter on the western portion of Rocky Mountain National Park before 9 a.m. and a timed entry pass isn’t required. The western portion of the park sustained fire damage in 2020, though the areas that didn’t are less crowded than the eastern portion of the park.

Planning Guide to Grand Tetons National Park

How to visit rocky mountain national park during the summer.

Day visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park during its peak season will need a timed entry permit from May 24th until October 22nd. Two permits are available: a Bear Lake Corridor permit and a General Rocky Mountain National Park permit. The permits offer a 2-hour window to enter the park or area. For more information, visit the NPS site.

A general Rocky Mountain National Park timed permit (excluding the Bear Lake area) will be required from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Bear Lake Corridor includes access to Bear Lake Road, Moraine Park, Moraine Park Discovery Center, Glacier Basin, and Sprague Lake. This permit is needed from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. and should be purchased in advance. You can use it to continue west along Trail Ridge Road.

The timed entry fee is $2, in addition to the general Rocky Mountain National Park entrance fee. A 1-day admission is $25 per car, and a 7-day pass is $35. All NPS annual passes are honored at entrances, though you will need the $2 timed entry permit.

Note: In October 2020, two wildfires broke out and burned a portion of the park. The Western Entrance, near Grand Lake, was affected along the northern portion of the park. Stopping is discouraged from Grand Lake Entrance to Onahu Trail.

The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST) is a 3,100-mile-long trail that runs from the Canadian border in Montana to the Mexican border in New Mexico. It runs through Rocky Mountain National Park and offers two loops, both of which travel at elevations from 8,000 feet to 11,000 feet.

  • Make noise while hiking by wearing bear bells and talking.
  • Don’t approach bears or let bears approach you.
  • If a bear notices you, you are too close. Back away slowly and if attacked, fight back. Don’t play dead.

Fishing in Rocky Mountain National Park

With over 50 lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park, find four varieties of trout. Fishing is permitted in the park though some areas are closed for fishing. Other lakes and springs offer catch-and-release fishing only. Some lakes have size, weight and number limits.

A valid Colorado fishing license is required for those 16 years old and older. Check-in at the visitor center to find a river or lake open for fishing.

There are two stables in Rocky Mountain National Park, Moraine Park and Glacier Creek, with seasonal horseback rides. Reservations are required through the concessionaires.

Hi, County Stables in Glacier Creek is located inside the park. Those with reservations don’t need to secure the Bear Lake Corridor or Rocky Mountain Timed Entry Pass. Rides start at 2 hours and 3 hours, and advanced trail rides are 6 and 8 hours.

Best Mountain Getaways for Families

Rocky mountain national park with kids.

The Junior Ranger Program is the go-to program for families to learn more about Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s free and takes about two hours to complete. My kids love the badges that the Rangers present them after completing their booklet.

You can pick up a booklet at any visitor center and complete the age-appropriate activities. Then, return for a souvenir badge and certificate.

Fall color in the rocky mountains.

As the season officially changes from summer to fall, so do the trees. Depending on weather and elevation, the quaking Aspen starts to mellow into its signature gold color in mid-to-late September until mid-October.

The easier way to experience the fall color season is a scenic drive like Trail Ridge Road. Hiking is another way to enjoy the cool weather and brilliant fall colors. Try Sprague Lake, Bear Lake or Albert Falls for the best color.

Best National Parks for Fall Color

Winter in rocky mountain national park.

It snows a lot in the Rocky Mountains, and the west side of the park gets more snow than the east. Trail Ridge Road shuts down for the season in the fall and doesn’t open again until late spring.

Snowshoeing and winter hiking are available. Several popular trails, such as Upper Beaver Meadows or Gem Lake Trail, are open.

Cross-country skiing is permitted across the park during the winter, though the Park Service doesn’t groom trails.

Sledding is allowed at Hidden Valley. Bring your own plastic saucer sled.
