“An OK hotel in the heart of downtown that accepts dogs. If I was rating it for myself, I’d give three stars, but but bonus points for letting me have my dog. Cookies in the lobby are a nice touch.“

“Rude. Absolutely unnecessary. The gym area was okay. The breakfast was fine. Pool was okay. The room seemed clean but it was CRAZY loud even with Windows closed. My room didn't have a view except for an alley way, but that was fine. Really, it's just the service that bothers me. I truly hate to be under the "care" or interest of unkind people. Read my short story if youd like. I Havent been in the room and I'm already displeased with the entry staff. They were everything but welcoming. I read the comments about the rude workers but jeez, it truly does start the moment you step foot through the front doors. There were two women hosting the main desk, one who gave me a look as if I had the absolute audacity to ask for the room I reserved. The second, condescendingly peered over her glasses from the back, as if to ask "what do you want?" except NEVER ACTUALLY OPENING THEIR MOUTHS TO ADDRESS ME. so I spoke first, no issue. I said hello and told them of my reservation and asked if I could check in, they looked at each other like they had a secret. The first lady checked her records to show that my room was in fact ready and we proceeded. Here was the issue: I just moved here not even a week or so ago, I don't have a record of address on file because I don't live anywhere. I have been hotel-hopping. That's why I was here. When the first lady hurriedly ran through the paper I had to sign she mentioned an address. I told her I didn't have one. That should have been the bottom line, next question, she should have told me what I could supplement it with. Instead! She snatches the paper back and says "you have to have an address". Now, I clearly just stated that I did not have an address. Snatching the paper, smacking her teeth, raising her voice, and giving me attitude was NOT going to make an address pop out of thin air. I just shook my head as in "well, I don't know what you want me to do". She repeated to the second lady who turned to me and says in a terribly patronizing manner that.. Guess it... Yeah, "yOu HAve To hAve An aDDreSs". So is there an echo, or are they hard at hearing?. (To paint a clearer picture: the two of them had the mannerisms, tone of voice, and attitude precisely reflective of the two aunties of little James from the movie James and the Giant Peach.) I did not repeat myself another time. The three of us stared at each other for a few moments. They eventually figured it out and had me write down the address of my license "that I don't live at" ?. I signed the paper and left. That is how the first five minutes of my visit went which set the tone for my night.“

Aging downtown hotel to get new life as the sparrow: ‘most would say “tear it down”‘.

Boise-based Oppenheimer Development Corp. struck a deal with the Barnes family, which has owned the property for generations. They will bring in Bozeman, MT-based Nest Partners, and give the hotel a completely new look and “vibe.” Soon, the decades-long Safari will end, and Sparrow will take flight.

“We take old 1960s motor lodge, and bring innovative ideas on the exterior,” Nest’s Erik Nelson told BoiseDev. “There’s a creepy vibe on these and you have to break it and come up with some cool things. We’re architect heavy on our team – so we’re focused on that from the beginning.”

“The land has been in the Barnes family a long time,” Malone said. “ Murelaga had a 40- or 50-year ground lease that expired. He knew he wasn’t going to re-up on the lease so it closed.”

‘Breathe new life’

“What a cool intersection to be at so we can be at the future of Boise,” Nelson said. “We couldn’t be more pleased to be at the location. It’s what we do is breathe new life.”

Community space, food truck, coffee

Nelson said he envisions the project as a basecamp for people to visit and explore Boise.

The lobby will include a new coffee shop space, which will open onto the plaza. The partners say they hope to evoke a European sense with coffee in the morning and beer and wine toward the end of the day.

Unique rooms

The exterior of the hotel will get a complete refresh as well. But some architectural elements will remain – including one currently hidden from view.
