They all spoke good English, had a good local knowledge and were very kind and helpful.

We are so happy to have gone on this trip! - June 2017

Thank you for all you did to make our trip spectacular! Both ballets were excellent and totally enjoyed by my son and I.

There is so much to see and do and I feel we did, with our wonderful guides a great job beginning to see all.

The St. Regis Hotel was so warm and friendly! Food was excellent and so convenient to the Kremlin, Bolshoi Theater, St. Basil's, etc. Thank you!

The Petro Palace was okay. Food was not the greatest but the staff were friendly. Location was great, however.

Everything went really smoothly - Private St. Petersburg Shore Excursion

A big thank you for our tour. We were looked after very well by our guide and the driver. They were both outstanding. The itinerary was the best. Everything went really smoothly

It was a great experience - Treasures of Two Capitals (5 star), June 2017

It was a great experience. The guides were knowledgeable and spot on time. Especially the guide in St. Petersburg seemed to get us to places with great timing. We beat the majority of crowds. Maybe that’s partly a result of being a small group, being that we didn’t have to wait for stragglers. The weather cooperated and we didn’t get caught in any rain storms.

Everybody in our group got along perfectly. We were all experienced travelers and shared information on places we’d been to. The ladies are now sharing pictures of our trip to Russia via email.

Why Go To St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg stands at the geographic and cultural borders of the west and east. While the city's appearance was influenced by the intricate and ordered architecture of Western Europe, it is still infused with a vibrant and persevering Russian spirit. St. Petersburg largely owes its dualistic nature to its founder, Peter the Great, an unabashed lover of all things European. In the early 1700s, Peter commissioned the city's streets and architecture to resemble his favorite western cities.

And the results of the czar's great experiment? A grand European-style city, replete with long boulevards, narrow canals and grand public squares. It's also an epicenter of distinctly Russian culture, as the place where literature and music greats like Dostoyevsky, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev all found their voice. Moscow might be known for its luxury and decadence, but St. Petersburg offers compromise between the expensive tastes of Russia's capital and the often-overrated (and just plain crowded) cities of Western Europe.

St. Petersburg Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Petersburg is from mid-June to September. Although it's expensive, St. Petersburg's near 24 hours of sunshine and White Nights celebrations during the summer months are not to be missed. Summers are generally cool but pleasant, with low temperatures dropping to the 50s and highs hovering around 70 degrees, so be sure to pack accordingly. Traveling to St. Petersburg in the winter is rare; days are short, and temperatures will dip well below freezing into the teens.

Weather in St. Petersburg

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

  • Bring your Russian dictionary English is widely spoken in major hotels and restaurants, but you'll find very few English speakers outside the tourist districts. You'll hear Russian and see Cyrillic almost exclusively, so it's best to be familiar with the alphabet before your trip.
  • Carry change for restrooms While St. Petersburg once had reputation for inadequate, ill-equipped public restrooms, the city has improved its facilities. However, use of restrooms in some public spaces, such as parks and shopping malls, may require a small payment (around 30 rubles or 50 cents).
  • Breathe easy Thanks to legislation passed in 2013, bars, restaurants and public transportation are now nonsmoking spaces, making secondhand smoke less of an issue for visitors. However, public sidewalks are another story.

How to Save Money in St. Petersburg

  • Invest in a St. Petersburg Card With the St. Petersburg Card , you'll enjoy free admission to more than 80 museums and tours, including the Peter and Paul Fortress , Peterhof and the Russian Museum , among others. Plus, you can use the card to pay your fare on public transportation. St. Petersburg Cards can be purchased in two-, three-, five- or seven-day increments.
  • Book early Making your hotel reservations up to a year in advance – especially if you intend to visit during June's White Nights celebration – can save your wallet some pain.
  • Protect your pockets As in many large cities, pickpockets are prevalent in St. Petersburg. Keep a close eye on your belongings in crowded areas, such as Nevsky Prospekt and the metro.

Culture & Customs

English is spoken in major hotels and restaurants, but you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the more local areas like the market or small inns. Some helpful Russian greetings include the informal "hello" ( priv-EYET ), the formal "hello" ( ZDRA-stvooy-te ), the informal "goodbye" ( pah-KAH ), and the formal "goodbye" ( Dah svih-DA-nee-ye ). Saying "thank you" ( Spa-SEE-ba) is always nice as well.

The ruble is the official currency of Russia. One U.S. dollar is equivalent to about 64 rubles. Plan to check the current exchange rate before your trip. While you might want cash for some purposes (purchasing metro tokens, for instance), you'll find that most restaurants, stores and hotels accept credit cards. Currency exchanges in airports generally offer less favorable rates than banks. ATMs are common in Russian cities, so your debit card might work (though you should check with your bank before you go regarding fees and exchange rates).

Tipping for service is common practice in Russia, and tips of around 15% are typical.

What to Eat

While it's true that visitors can still find classic Russian culinary staples like borscht, stroganoff, cabbage stew and caviar on menus around the city, travelers will also enjoy more contemporary dishes as well. And fortunately for visitors, food prices are more reasonable in St. Petersburg compared to Moscow .

You'll find hundreds of culinary hot spots in St. Petersburg, especially along Nevsky Prospekt, ranging from luxurious eateries to sprawling, local markets. If you're looking for an affordable snack on the go, try a Russian crepe, or blini. This Russian pancake is usually stuffed with butter, caviar or other fillings and is a treat for the adventurous foodie. You'll find it at street vendors around the city. To acquaint yourself with local produce, meats and cheeses, pay a visit to the Kuznechnyy Rynok (Kuznechny Market) a favorite among tourists for its honey vendors and plentiful souvenirs.

If you're craving a classic Russian meal, consider Literary Café on Nevsky Prospekt, which once played host to the likes of Pushkin and Dostoyevsky. For a more modern take on Russian fare, head to Hamlet + Jacks for dishes like Baltic herring and Siberian venison. And for Georgian cuisine, Phali Hinkali is a top spot thanks to its hearty dishes. If you're celebrating a special occasion, or just want to treat yourself to a memorable meal, critics and travelers suggest making a reservation at Palkin , which is known for its elegant dining room and fusion of Russian and French cuisines. Other well-reviewed eateries include Probka (Italian), Bekitzer (Israeli) and Etnos Café (Georgian).

St. Petersburg has a mixed reputation when it comes to safety, but most agree that it has improved from the chaotic time immediately following the fall of the Soviet Union. Discrimination against ethnic groups, specifically individuals of Asian or African descent, is still reportedly an issue in Russia, as is discrimination against LGBTQ individuals. Government officials warn against traveling alone at night to avoid violent confrontations.

In October 2019, the U.S. State Department issued an advisory urging increased caution in Russia because of possible terrorism and arbitrary enforcement of laws. However, these mainly applied to specific areas (such as the North Caucasus for terrorism and occupied portion of Ukraine for abuses by authorities). With respect to St. Petersburg specifically, the State Department noted possible delays in services for U.S. citizens because of reductions in diplomatic personnel. According to the State Department, you can be detained by Russian police for not having your passport with you (police in Russia do not need to show probable cause to stop, question or detain you). Plan to carry your passport with you at all times. Visit the State Department's website for more information.

When walking around, you'll also want to be very careful when crossing roads, as drivers don't always yield to pedestrians here. Use crosswalks and only cross when vehicles have come to a complete stop. Several travel sources advise tourists not to drink the tap water in St. Petersburg due to the antiquated pipes and high metal levels in the tap water. To avoid illness, only drink filtered or bottled water.

Getting Around St. Petersburg

The best way to get around St. Petersburg is by public transportation; otherwise, you can walk around Nevsky Prospekt, the main thoroughfare. There's an extensive bus and metro system with lines that run throughout the center and into the city's outskirts. The tram or trolley is best for short journeys through downtown. For trips to the suburbs, try the metro system. Rental cars are available at the Pulkovo Airport (LED), but acquiring the proper driving documents can be a hassle. Taxis are also a prevalent (though, at times, unsafe) way to move around.

From the airport, a taxi can cost anywhere from 600 to 1500 rubles (or about $9.50 to $24), depending on your destination. Taxi Pulkovo is the preferred company; you'll see Taxi Pulkovo stands in the arrivals area of the airport. However, several recent travelers have been overcharged for taxi trips between the airport and the city. Many recommended relying on smartphone apps instead to ensure a fair price.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Acquiring a visa to travel in Russia is a bit more complicated and expensive than visiting other countries. Every foreign traveler entering Russia must have a Russian-based sponsor (like a hotel, tour company, university or relative). In addition to a valid U.S. passport, you must also obtain a travel visa from a Russian embassy or consulate prior to arriving in Russia. If you plan to stay in Russia for more than seven days, you have to register your visa and migration card (the white paper document given by the border police on first entry to Russia) with the Federal Migration Service. Tourists visas start at $160 per person. You can apply for a visa up to 90 days before your intended visa start date. For more information on entry and exit requirements, visit the U.S. State Department  website .

St. Petersburg is built around a network of rivers and canals, with many of the city's top attractions located on the banks of the water.

Inspired by London, Vienna, and Paris, Peter the Great transformed a tract of swampland on the Lena River delta into what would become renowned as one of the world’s most beautiful cities. This in-depth seven-day tour of St Petersburg will ensure you have plenty of time to relish all the most unmissable highlights of St Petersburg and its surroundings. St Petersburg, is, after all, one of the most visually compelling destinations in Russia, and its ornamental splendour was designed to be savoured.

Treasures of St Petersburg Tour Highlights:

  • St Petersburg Walking Tour: Admire the spectacular urban architecture, old-world grandeur and a buzzing vibe on a guided walking tour of St Petersburg, including a stroll along the lively main drag, Nevsky Prospekt
  • Take a hydrofoil boat trip to the World Heritage listed Peterhof Palace and Park, known as the ‘Russian Versailles’
  • St Petersburg Canal Cruise: View some of Peter's most famous sites from a unique angle while you sit back on a relaxing cruise through some of the many canals that pass through the centre of the city
  • Marvel at some of the most esteemed treasures among the 3 million works of art on a guided tour of St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum
  • Enjoy a day excursion to Tsarkoe Selo (the Tsar’s village) in the charming suburb of Pushkin, home of the extravagant Catherine Palace and the stately Alexander Palace
  • Yusupov Palace: What makes this sumptuous 18th-century mansion on the Moika River a truly dark curiosity is that it was here that Rasputin met his grisly end at the hands of assassins in 1916

On this comprehensive one week tour of St Petersburg, you’ll learn the bizarre and fascinating tales behind the Russian Tsars - the geniuses and madmen and that ruled the city from their extravagant mansions, and the amazing artists that built the city under their watch.

Feast your eyes on the ‘living museum’ that is St Petersburg’s historic city centre as we explore its grand avenues, bustling squares and manicured parks on foot. You’ll also see the city from a different perspective on a cruise along the canals that criss-cross this venerable ‘Venice of the North’.

We’ll also travel to the leafy suburbs outside of St Petersburg to the lavish royal estates of Peter and Catherine the Great. Plenty of free time is provided to take in the atmosphere of the city yourself and explore the intersect where old-world values and modern aspirations collide. Enjoy world-class shopping and dining, hip bars, cool creative spaces, and radical street art.

Of the several optional evening excursions on offer during our Treasures of St Petersburg tour, a night at the Russian Ballet in the Mariinsky Theatre is not to be missed!

Peter's daughter, Empress Elizabeth, who ordered the expansion of the Grand Palace, greatly extended the park and the famous system of fountains, including the truly spectacular Grand Cascade. Representing nearly two centuries of European aristocratic fashion executed to the highest standards, Peterhof is like an encyclopedia of park design through the age of empire. Being amazed by Tsarist Russia, its power and infinite beauty.

We also explore the stately neoclassical Alexander Palace, whose tumultuous history paints a fascinating portrait of the Romanov family and the replica of the world-renowned Amber Room. Afterwards, we head to nearby Pavlovsk - the youngest of the grand Imperial estates around St. Petersburg, named in honour of Tsar Pavel. This fine neo-classical palace and its extensive landscaped gardens are stamped with his taste and even more so with that of his wife, the German-born Maria Feodorovna.

As an option* for a dinner, enjoy a hearty meal with a friendly local Russian family! Try various salads, delicious blinis with caviar and assorted jams, taste home-made drinks and just relax and have fun!

DAY 6 Yusupov Palace

In the morning you embark on a guided tour of Yusupov Palace, one of the most elegant private palaces in Europe, where Grigory Rasputin was murdered in December 1916.

Its collection spans from 12th-century Icons to 20th-century masters like Chagall, Malevich and Kandinsky.

In the late evening, we invite you to discover the splendour of the city by night, with an optional* cruise along the Neva River, viewing of one of the city’s two magnificent bridges opening, you’re sure to be serenaded by some of Saint Petersburg’s talented street performers as you watch the spectacle unfold. Testimonials

Ian Heath Australia

Our St Petersburg visit was certainly a highlight of our trip.

(We had bookings to a concert at the Mariinsky Concert Hall which she took us to make sure we knew where it was and to pick up the tickets.  We also had internet tickets for the Hermitage for our free day which again she showed us where we would have to go to use them). She made a number of recommendations for meals – most of which we followed through with and they were all excellent. Our drivers were also excellent – punctual and skilled.

Our accommodation was also very good.  You may recall that I was uncertain about how 3-star/4-star ratings in Russia would compare with other European hotels we had experienced.  The Renaissance in St Petersburg was certainly well rated at 4-stars – it met our needs very well, especially as we were staying for 7 days which is quite a long time for us in a hotel (we would normally book an apartment for that sort of time).

Our itinerary worked out well I think. We certainly felt like we had seen all the main highlights of St Petersburg. We chose not to book any of the suggested night entertainments because we thought we might be too tired at the end of a day sightseeing – this we think was a wise decision. I do not think we could have turned around after the Peterhof trip or the Tsarskoe Selo trip and gone out in the evening (beyond the evening meals).  (We found Marina was willing to push us to see as much as possible and we had to slow her down a little to include breaks for coffee or food which she was willing to forgo if we had the stamina).  Of all the activities and places we visited, I thought the canal tour was the weakest.  It did not add significantly I thought to what we were exposed to through our land-based activities with Marina. Nonetheless, the canal tours were clearly a major industry in St Petersburg but perhaps we were spoiled with our private guide and others got more out of the canal tour.

The only hiccup in our visit was on our free day (Tuesday).  We wanted to visit the Kunstkamera museum.  Lonely Planet said the Museum was open Tuesday to Sundays and Marina (looking after us again) checked the Russian website to confirm this information. Unfortunately when we got to the museum on Tuesday morning the sign on the door said it was closed on Mondays and the last Tuesday of the month!

We really enjoyed our tour around St Petersburg with Anna. This tour takes you to all the main sights. I highly recommend this tour . Anna also took us inside a fantastic tradition Russian store and showed us traditional Russian delicacies. Highly recommend the tour!

I had only one day to tour St Petersburg. After researching many tours, I chose the Discover St Petersburg walking tour. Despite the cold weather, the tour was fantastic. Kate was my guide and was great. She is a walking encyclopedia of history and facts and was able to answer every question I threw at her plus some. Thanks for a great day! PS – opted for the optional professional photos which I highly recommend as well. Well done.

3 out of 5 of our party had never before been to Russia, so the private tours with guide were essential. We experienced St Petersburg as a modern, vibrant city with wide-ranging history, and we were extremely fortunate to have as our guide the excellent Anna, who not only showed us the the best sites, but did so with friendliness, wit, intelligence and passion for her subject. She really made an already awesome experience extra-special

Moscow - St. Petersburg

The classical tour of Moscow and Saint Petersburg is designed for tourists, who just start their acquaintance with Russia and its two treasures — the biggest cities, Moscow, the capital, and Saint Petersburg, the cultural center and the cradle of architectural and gems of tsar époque. The classical program usually takes from 5 to 8 days and can be adapted in intensity depending on how much free time you would like to have in addition to excursions.

saint petersburg tour

day 1 Welcome to Russia!

Our driver meets you at the airport (or railway station). Watch out for your name on a signboard the driver will hold. Don’t worry if your flight is coming late: we are monitoring the actual schedule of each customer and you can be sure we are aware of the delays, and your driver is waiting for you patiently.

After you arrive at your hotel, we can either give you time to have a rest and deal with jet-lag or take you to your first tour where you will see Moscow in its night-lighted beauty.

day 2 Panoramic tour of Moscow and the Kremlin

saint petersburg tour

Together with the guide, who is most likely to become a great company for you for the next couple of days, and the driver, responsible for your comfortable transportation during the tour, you are going to see Moscow, learn about its history and make photo-stops. You will see the beautiful Red Square, the landmark of Moscow and Russia; watch the picturesque panorama from the Sparrow Hills; enjoy the view of the magnificent MSU building, walk down the elegant Nikolskaya street and shop around GUM — posh and exquisite oldest shopping center of Moscow.

Our guide will show you the best places to have lunch. Tell them about your preference and you will be taken to a sweet cosy cafeteria or a high-end restaurant. We do not normally include meal prices in the individual package so that you could have a wider choice of places and meals that you can pay for on the spot.

After lunch, get ready to immerse into the earliest Russian history. The Moscow Kremlin tour is about heritage, art, culture, and religion — and, of course, the pleasure of your eyes. Our packages include the visit of the territory of Kremlin and two cathedrals of three. You can also choose the extras: a visit to the Diamond Fund, Armory, or Saint Basil’s Cathedral, located on the Red Square just a few minutes walk.

Usually, our second day ends after the Kremlin tour and we take you back to your hotel.

day 3 Get closer to Russian art: The Tretyakov Gallery

saint petersburg tour

Be ready to wake up early today if you book the optional tour to Moscow metro and the Old Arbat: Why should you choose it? The essential part of the travel is to feel the vibe of the life of locals and traveling by metro followed by the stroll down the favorite pedestrian street of the Muscovites. This is a fully walking tour, so make sure you can walk on long distances; it will take approximately three hours. The metro tour will start at the station closest to your accommodation place — near the station or at your hotel if it is located within walking distance from a station. You will see the impressive stations designed like the palaces: Ploschad Revolutsii, Komsomolskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Teatralnaya, and the others. This tour is only available in the morning according to the excursion committee of the metro regulations, so don’t oversleep! The next point is the beautiful pedestrian street Old Arbat. Here you can have lunch, take beautiful pictures and do some shopping, or just walk down the busy street, so loved by youth and tourists.

The main tour of the day is about art and you will definitely enjoy it: there is hardly a person who cannot find a catching thing for them in the famous Tretyakov Gallery, the greatest collection of Russian fine art. There you will see the most significant pieces of art, known by every Russian from a schooler to an expert. The classic tour includes the visit to the division of classical art, but if you also want to get acquainted with modern style paintings, don’t forget to book an extra tour to another building of the Tretyakov Gallery.

day 4 Open the window to Europe: transfer to St Petersburg

saint petersburg tour

Have a hearty breakfast before you start: today you are going to travel 750 kilometers to visit another brilliant Russian city. We offer you to try the unique experience with Russian Railways and take an overnight brand train with sleeping berths; you can choose between 4-berths and 2-berths compartments; hot meals and bed linen for your comfortable overnight journey are included!

Before the train, you have plenty of time, so why not take another extra tour of Pushkin museum, with its enormous collection of sculptures, paintings, art, and other items of different epochs.

In the afternoon, you are collected from the hotel and dropped off at the railway station. During your trip between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, you are not having a guide, but the friendly staff will help you with any questions.

day 5 Arrival to Saint Petersburg and the city tour

saint petersburg tour

In the early morning, your train arrives at the main railway station of Saint Petersburg. Your guide is already here, waiting for you with a signboard. People in the city are in a hurry to their jobs and you can take your time, enjoying the views of this true tzar city. The city tour, organized upon arrival before you check it, will show you the main square of the city — Palace square, Vasilievsky island with its rostral columns, and aesthetical architectural monuments of the 18th century. Everyone will find enjoyment during the tour: history lovers will learn more about the Russian culture, art enthusiasts — find out the unique architectural objects, and the Instagram addicts will definitely enrich their accounts with the new stunning pictures with city views.

After the tour, you check-in to your hotel and have spare time for the rest of the day.

day 6 World-famous museum: Visit the Hermitage

saint petersburg tour

Get ready to walk a lot today! It’s time to explore the gem of Saint Petersburg and its main lair of the world art objects: the Hermitage. The guided tour allows you to skip the enormous lines and see as much as possible in a three hours tour. It would take many years to explore each item of the Hermitage, so the tour is focused on the most famous paintings and sculptures: Rembrandt’s Danaya, Gainsborough’s Woman in Blue, Matisse’s Dance, The Peacock Clock, and the others.

day 7 Tour of Pushkin: Catherine Palace and Park

saint petersburg tour

This is the most desired part of the tour for many visitors: today you have an opportunity to visit the legendary Amber room in the Catherine Palace, located 25 km away from Saint Petersburg. With the help of the driver, your guide takes you to the town of Pushkin and shows the impressive summer residence of Russian emperors. The Amber Room is a gem: it is a chamber, fully decorated with amber and gold; it is the unexceptionable reconstruction of the missed genuine Amber room. If there is no chance to get in the Catherine Palace (sometimes there are too many requests), it is replaced with the amber workshop, where you have a chance to work on your own piece of amber and have a glass of sparkling champagne as the cherry on a pie. In addition, the trip includes walking around Catherine park, a piece of landscape design art.

day 8 Goodbye Russia! Departure transfer

saint petersburg tour

Today the journey comes to its end; if you want to have the most of your last day, book the tour of Peterhof, if time allows. It is usually called a Russian Versaille for its fountains layout and complex of sculptures; the Great Palace visit is also included in the tour. The whole assembly holds the spirit of the Tsars epoque and is a great place for walking, taking pictures, and learning more about the emperors' time of Russia and Saint Petersburg.

After the tour, you are delivered directly to the airport for your return flight, or to the hotel — if you need a transfer later.

Thousands race in and around St. Pete during St. Anthony’s Triathlon

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — One of the biggest triathlons in the country took over the streets of Pinellas County and St. Petersburg on Sunday, as racers in St. Anthony’s Triathlon swam, biked and ran their way on a tour of the county.

“It’s a race and an event that the city totally embraces,” said BayCare Health System’s Tim McMahon. “Our community just is out here supporting us and our athletes, and it’s a lot of fun and you should try it sometime if you ever have an inkling to, to get out here and do this.”

Here’s what it takes to be middle class

With the strong wind Sunday, organizers shortened the swim portion, but the biking and running sections still took contestants to the southern tip of Pinellas County and throughout downtown St. Pete.

“Perfect triathlon,” said triathlete Tony Handler. “They’re so well organized and they run it well, it’s just a fun place.”

This was Handler’s 31st St. Anthony’s Triathlon; he’s completed more than 300 triathlons in his life.

“I started out with being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer about 40 years ago, and they told me I had two years to live,” Handler said. “While I was in the hospital I saw the Iron Man Triathlon on television and that inspired me.”

While Handler said he’s just staying active, others are competing in preparation of the Olympics.

“I think I just love the community,” said triathlete Chase McQueen. “Love the competitive aspect of swim bike and run and fell in love with it and yeah, now I’m doing it for a living, so it’s pretty cool.”

McQueen said he hopes to use this race to get him ready for an Olympic qualifying race in the future.

“Had a big race in London that I won last weekend,” McQueen said. “Come here, hopefully show some good fitness, get some confidence, and there’s some big races coming up in the next couple months.”

Plus, five Special Olympic Athletes competed Sunday.

“They were invited to compete in the St Anthony’s triathlon and we’ve never done this one before,” said Amy Selvey of Special Olympics Florida. “Our program is just starting in our area so we’re super excited to be invited and to participate.”

The fastest finishers completed Sunday’s race in about one hour and 34 minutes.

For the latest news, weather, sports, and streaming video, head to WFLA.
