Tour of Scandinavia 2023 overview

The Tour of Scandinavia, which takes place from August 23 to 27, is the only Women's WorldTour race in Scandinavia and a chance for the region to show off their talented crop of home riders and big international names on a challenging, varied course.

Born out of the Ladies Tour of Norway, the race is a uniquely designed stage race that traverses Scandinavia in the space of a week. The first edition in 2022 visited Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and this year the racing will take place in Denmark and Norway.

Since expanding from the former Tour of Norway to include the other Scandinavian countries, the race has also gone from four to five stages, making it one of the longer races on the women's calendar.

The 2023 edition of the race is set to be the hardest one yet, repeating the mountain-top finish to Norefjell, as well as a tough opening stage to Halden and an individual time trial on stage 4.

The old iterations of this race used to be Marianne Vos territory - she won three editions in a row - but is now more of an all-round test, suiting the traditional general classification riders, like 2022 overall winner Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig .

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 route

The organisers of the Tour of Scandinavia have put together the most varied route yet for 2023, featuring stages for every type of rider: sprint finishes, punchy kicks, longer climbs and even an individual time trial.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 route map

The key climb, up to the top of the Norefjell ski resort in Norway, is not as big as the mountains seen in the Tour de France Femmes and Giro Donne - it’s 11.1km in length, peaking out at 791m - but will be enough to draw out the stronger climbers of the peloton.

The overall winner will have to contend with a lot more than just climbing, though, with punchy finishes on stages 1, 4 and 6 and crucially a 16.4km time trial on stage 5. For the purest sprinters, it’s only really stage 2 that is a straightforward fast and flat finish, but many of the best sprinters - such as Lorena Wiebes or Marianne Vos - will also be able to tackle some of the more punchy finales.

Stage 1: Mysen → Halden (Norway) (124.6km)

Stage 2: Vikersund → Norefjell (Norway) (150.5km)

Stage 3: Kongsberg → Larvik (Norway) (134.9km)

Stage 4 (ITT): Herning → Herning (Denmark) (16.5km)

Stage 5: Middelfart → Haderslev (Denmark) (143.9km)

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 contenders

Who are the top riders at this year's Tour of Scandinavia? One of the key favourites for this race will most certainly be defending champion Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-SUEZ), who would have the chance to take victory in her home nation as the race finishes in Denmark this year. Something of an all-rounder with good climbing abilities, this kind of race suits Uttrup Ludwig well, perhaps more so than the mountains in the Tour and Giro.

Last year’s runner-up Liane Lippert (Movistar) should also be in the conversation, especially as she has been working on her climbing and GC competitiveness since her move from DSM to Movistar over the winter, and comes here off the back of a Tour de France Stage win. Movistar are also bringing Annemiek van Vleuten to Scandinavia, though, as her penultimate stage race, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Dutchwoman try to go for the overall.

If Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx) takes to the start, she will surely be a favourite for the flatter finish, but she should have a big challenge in the form of Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich). Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), who is a prolific stage winner in Norway, can also be put in the sprinter category, though it will be the punchier stages that she has her eyes on.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 teams

All 15 WorldTour teams will take part in this year's Tour of Scandinavia, plus two Continental teams and the Danish national team.

  • Jayco AlUla
  • Israel Premier Tech Roland
  • UAE Team ADQ

What happened in the 2022 Tour of Scandinavia?

The 2022 Tour of Scandinavia started in Copenhagen before travelling to Sweden and then to Norway for the finale. The first three stages were all won by a very in-form Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), before Alex Manly (BikeExchange-Jayco) survived from an attacking group to win the fourth stage and end Vos's streak.

Stage 5 was the decisive GC day as the race headed to the Norefjell climb, which saw Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-SUEZ-Futuroscope) take the win and the race lead, which she then successfully defended on stage 6 - won once again by Vos - to secure her first stage race GC victory.

Tour of Scandinavia race history

The Tour of Scandinavia started life as the Ladies Tour of Norway, which was first organised in 2014. That edition - just two stages long - was won by Anna van der Breggen (Rabobank-Liv), and in fact her team took a full sweep of the podium, with Marianne Vos in second and Kasia Niewiadoma in third.

The race grew to three stages in 2016, four in 2019, and most recently a full six days of racing since 2022. Previous winners have included Lucinda Brand, Annemiek van Vleuten, and Marianne Vos on three occasions.

Last year, in its first season as the expanded Tour of Scandinavia, it was Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-SUEZ-Futuroscope) who took the maiden victory, putting decisive time into Lianne Lippert (Team DSM) and Alex Manly (BikeExchange-Jayco) on the Norefjell climb and defending her advantage on the final day in Halden.

The race is organised by the Moberg family - race director Roy is the father of retired pro Emilie Moberg, who raced for Hitec Products, Team Virtu and Le Col Wahoo during her 12-year career.

Tour of Scandinavia 2022: Routes, Schedule, Livestream and Teams

Women’s road race is back with the inaugural event of the Scandinavian Tour about to begin on the 9th of August. Here is all you need to know about the Tour Of Scandinavia 2022.

Originally named as the Battle of the North, The Tour of Scandinavia has replaced the Ladies Tour of Norway. This race will consist of six stages starting from Copenhagen, Denmark. After the end of almost a week-long intense racing, it will finish in Halden, Norway on the 14th of August.

Defending Champion: Annemiek van Vleuten

Many big names of the women’s peloton have signed up for the 2022 Tour Of Scandinavia, aiming to win the first-ever Scandinavia crown. However, Annemiek van Vleuten, the winner of both the Ro d’Italia Donne and Tour de France Femmes, has withdrawn from the race.

With van Vleuten not in the mix, Demi Vollering is the rider with the most eyes on. Vollering, part of Team SD Worx, has placed second in the recently finished Tour de France. Thanks to her stellar form, the 25-year-old Dutch Cyclist has arrived in Copenhagen as the hot favorite.

Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig is another cyclist coming into the Tour of Scandinavia as a potential winner to take the inaugural Scandinavian title. Ludwig’s win in the third stage of Femmes will boost her confidence to win in the Scandinavia Tour.

The Spanish team, Movie-star, has brought Sarah Gigante in the place of their biggest star, Annemiek van Vleuten. Gigante has built her reputation as a splendid climber. Her expertise in climbing will make a huge impact if she manages to get past the sprint stages with success.

When is the Tour Of Scandinavia 2022?

Tour Of Scandinavia 2022 is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, the 9th of August. The 6-day-long racing tour will conclude following the most prolonged and final stage of the race on Sunday, August 14, 2022.

Women’s Tour of Scandinavia 2022 - Route, predictions and contenders

The next stage race in the Women’s WorldTour skirts through Denmark, Sweden and Norway and some of the biggest stars in the peloton are due to start

Words: Rachel Jary

If you’re hungry for more exciting stage racing following the inaugural Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift , there isn’t long to wait as the women’s peloton go to battle once more on the 9th August. This time, it’s a far cry from the rolling hills of rural France, instead they will race against the striking, dramatic backdrop of Scandinavia over six days.

Things kick off in Copenhagen, a city that has had its fair share of cycling fever in the last few weeks with the Grand Depart of the men’s Tour de France taking place in the city. We can expect big crowds and plenty of excitement from the Danes who have enjoyed an incredibly successful season of cycling with Jonas Vingegaard taking the overall win in the men’s Tour de France and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig winning a stage of the women’s.

The route then heads into Sweden for one day only, as the peloton will race along the stunning coast at Bohuslän. The final four stages take place in Norway – the Tour of Scandinavia is an improved and extended edition of the Ladies Tour of Norway which has been on the women’s professional racing calendar since 2014. Perhaps the most punishing stage of the race is on the penultimate day, it finishes up a 11.1 kilometre climb that averages a 6.1% gradient. Tour de France Femmes winner Annemiek van Vleuten took victory when the Ladies Tour of Norway finished on this climb in 2021.

While the newly crowned Tour de France champion isn’t expected to start in this race, there are still some big names due to be competing. Perhaps the most standout favourite of them all is Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig of FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope who will be hoping to perform well in front of a home crowd. The Dane proved her form at the Tour and is a strong contender to take victory overall here.

Read on for a full outline of the route, contenders and our prediction to take the victory in the inaugural Tour of Scandinavia.

The stand out riders on the current start list for the Tour of Scandinavia are FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope’s Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig – a stage winner at the Tour de France Femmes who is well-suited to the final climb and will hope to impress a home crowd – and Team SD Worx's Demi Vollering . The Dutch rider finished second at the Tour de France Femmes and won the polka dot jersey, plus she was the closest challenger to Annemiek van Vleuten of Movistar in the mountains. Van Vleuten won't be starting the race in Copenhagen, so her Movistar teammates, such as Sarah Gigante and Katrine Aalerud , will be looking to take a rare chance of leadership opportunity here.

Marianne Vos of Jumbo-Visma is the other big name on the start list. The final Queen stage may be too much for the legendary Dutch rider but the punchy stages earlier on in the race will be extremely well-suited to her. She proved at the Tour de France Femmes she is in fantastic stage-winning form so it will be interesting to see if she carries this with her to the Tour of Scandinavia.

Liane Lippert will be Team DSM's GC hopeful – the German rider performed well in the Tour de France Femmes. Charlotte Kool will be able to have her chance in the sprint stages for the team as their main sprinter Lorena Wiebes is not starting this race. Canyon//SRAM bring a team of promising young climbers including Mikayla Harvey and Neve Bradbury , both of whom will want to make their mark on the WorldTour stage. Alice Barnes could also contest the sprint finishes earlier on in the race for the German team.

Joscelin Lowden of Team UNO-X is another rider who will look to perform well in the hillier stages, especially riding for a Norwegian team. Lowden showed strong form in the Tour de France Femmes with a good breakaway effort on stage five.

Teams such as Trek-Segafredo look to have brought a roster focussed on the sprint stages, with Chloe Hosking likely their protected sprinter. Shari Bossuyt of Canyon//SRAM is another one to watch in the fast finishes, as is Alexandra Manly of Team Bike Exchange-Jayco and Susanne Andersen of Team UNO-X. Barbara Guarischi of Movistar will likely be the Spanish team's chosen rider for the sprint stages as Emma Norsgaard is not starting in Copenhagen.

Where to watch:

GCN/Eurosport will be streaming every stage live on their digital channels starting on the 9th August at 15:15 GMT. Eurosport 1 will show each stage live apart from on the final day where it will be a delayed broadcast. In Norway TV2 is broadcasting the race live and on their digital platform TV2 Play. 6 Eren will broadcast the race live in Denmark while Kanal 9 is the channel in Sweden.

Tour of Scandinavia can also be seen delayed in South America and Africa. Claro Sports in South America and Super Sports in Africa will air the show delayed and you can also see highlights on UCI’s own YouTube-channel.

The second Tour of Scandinavia falls at an awkward time, post-World Championships, due to the Super Worlds this year, but the racing will absolutely still be worth watching. Last year saw four stage wins by the G.O.A.T., Marianne Vos, a fantastic effort by Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig to take the queen stage, and Alexandra Manly’s first WorldTour victory.

This year offers a bit of terrain for everyone, with the same climb that Uttrup Ludwig won the race on in 2022 featuring early in the race on stage 2, a few sprint-friendly stages, some breakaway chances, and even a short time trial on the penultimate day.

Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig wins stage 5 of the 2022 Tour of Scandinavia. She's wearing the white-cross-on-red of the Danish national champion and punches the air as she crosses the line solo.

Technically the race has been running since 2014 as the Ladies Tour of Norway, but after the 2021 edition, the race organizers introduced a change that would see their event expand to Denmark and Sweden. In its second edition in its expanded format, the Tour of Scandinavia will start in Norway with three stages before moving on to Denmark for the final two.

It is also the second-to-last race for former world champion Annemiek van Vleuten, who will end her illustrious career at the Simac Ladies Tour in September. She will line up alongside the defending champion to fight for what might be her final GC jersey.

The Tour of Scandinavia kicks off Wednesday, August 23rd in Mysen, Norway. The race consists of five stages, the first three in Norway and the final two in Denmark.

Live coverage can be found on GCN+ at 16:00 CEST for stages 1, 2 and 4, 13:00 for stage 3 and 12:30 for the final stage on Sunday.

Stage 1: Wednesday, August 23 – Mysen to Halden (124.6 km)

The first stage isn’t anything too hectic to start with; the 124.6 km road stage finishes with two local circuits in Halden. The circuits include one small climb that should make the finish a little more interesting.

The route profile of stage 1 of the 2023 Tour of Scandinavia.

The way she was riding at the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, look to Lorena Wiebes to take the first stage and with it, the first leader’s jersey.

Stage 2: Thursday, August 24 – Vikersund to Norefjell (150.5 km)

The second stage is the “queen stage,” finishing after a 9 km-long ascent, it’s the longest stage in the race at 150.5 km.

The roads up to the climb offer ample opportunities for riders to get away before the base of the ascent, but the action will all come to a head on the climb to Norefjell Ski and Spa as it did in the 2022 edition when Uttrup Ludwig and Liane Lippert battled it out for overall victory.

The route profile of stage 2 of the 2023 Tour of Scandinavia, which features a steep climb eight km from the finish.

As the Simac Ladies Tour usually does not include any climbs over five km long, this will be the last time we see Van Vleuten in action on her favourite terrain. As such, Uttrup Ludwig will have her work cut out for her when it comes to repeating success in Norfjell.

Stage 3: Friday, August 25 – Kongsberg to Larvik (139.9 km)

The third stage is the most challenging of the week, despite the significant climb featuring a day prior; this one includes a Category 1 and Category 2 climb, and a short steep ascent to the finish to round out the day.

The route of stage 3 of the 2023 Tour of Scandinavia, featuring a lumpy profile in the second half and a climb to the finish at Larvik.

The whole stage is up and down, it will be hard for anyone whose legs aren’t feeling great to hide. Expect it to be either a small group of heavy hitters or a solo rider to ride to the line in Larvik.

Stage 4 ITT: Saturday, August 26 – Herning to Herning (16.5 km)

After hopping on a boat to Denmark the women will race a 16.5 km individual time trial around Herning on Saturday. The route is shortish at 16.5 km and flat, so it favours those who spend time on the discipline. It is also pretty technical, with some corners in the city and some sharp bends on the circuit just north of the start/finish.

The route profile of the stage 4 TT at the 2023 Tour of Scandinavia, which is mostly flat.

Worlds silver medalist Grace Brown is on the start list for FDJ-Suez and will no doubt be eyeing the fourth stage for her first big result since winning Tour Down Under in February.

Stage 5: Sunday, August 27 – Middelfart to Haderslev (143.9 km)

The final stage in Denmark is a fun one, with a few short climbs before the race finishes with some fast and challenging circuits. The race wraps up atop a short, steep climb, but the peloton will see it three times before they are finally done for the week.

The route profile of the fifth and final stage of the 2023 Tour of Scandinavia, which again is mostly rolling, with a circuit in Haderslev that the riders will do three times before finishing on a short climb.

While the finale will be hard for the Dane, all eyes will be on Tour de France Femmes stage winner Emma Norsgaard to take a stage in her home country on Sunday.

The Contenders

With the Giro Donne, Tour de France Femmes, and World Championships behind us the start list for the Tour of Scandinavia is somewhat lacking in big names, but there are still a few star contenders lining up on Wednesday.

The General Classification

As mentioned above, Annemiek van Vleuten will be aiming for what might be her final overall victory. She is up against 2022 winner Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig , who showed incredible form to take third in the Worlds in Glasgow. Van Vleuten was somewhat lacking at the Tour, but her form at the Giro was good enough to take three stages and the overall so it’s not out of the question the Dutchwoman demolishes the peloton on stage 2.

Annemiek van Vleuten blows kisses to the crowd as she comes to the finish line in eighth place at the 2023 World Road Championships, which will be her last.

Another rider coming off the Tour is Ashleigh Moolman Pasio . The AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step rider finished sixth overall there, but was sitting in the top three for a few stages. Now she is riding with a little less pressure, and if she holds onto Van Vleuten on the climb of stage 2 she can outsprint the former world champ for the stage and possibly the overall.

Canyon-SRAM’s young hopeful Ricarda Bauernfeind will get to try her hand at being the team leader for the first time; after winning a stage of the Tour she’s earned that right, so it will be interesting to see how she shoulders the responsibility in Scandinavia.

Ricarda Bauernfeind seems surprised to win stage 5 of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes. The Canyon-SRAM rider crosses the line alone from the breakaway and has her hand over her mouth.

Australian fans have a lot to cheer for with Amanda Spratt and Brodie Chapman lining up for Lidl-Trek. The duo will be fun to watch, with Spratty coming off some alright form from the Tour and Chapman coming back to the peloton after illness. Earlier in the season, Chapman rode an incredible time trial at the Tour de Suisse putting her among the second-tier favourites in Scandinavia, especially if the race doesn’t break apart on the second stage.

Another Aussie who could take the whole thing – and could definitely win a stage – is Grace Brown . Fresh off second in the ITT at Worlds, Brown is favoured to win the fourth stage but is also a decent climber when she needs to be. She will be there primarily to help her FDJ-Suez teammate Uttrup Ludwig, but in the process, she could sneak into a good spot before the fourth stage and upset the GC.

Grace Brown rides in the 2023 World Time Trial Championship in Glasgow, Scotland. The Australian is dressed in the national team kit, with green and yellow bands, and is in an extremely aerodynamic position en route to her second consecutive silver medal.

Niamh Fisher-Black returns to the WorldTour peloton after the Giro Donne. The young Kiwi on SD Worx-Protime is an exceptional climber, so keep an eye on her for the second stage. She is also good at reading a race, so the third and final stages are days she could surprise.

With a few good sprinting opportunities, teams have brought some of their fast women to Scandinavia including Lorena Wiebes , currently the fastest woman on the road. Wiebes has been personally responsible for nine of SD Worx’s 54 victories this season and has contributed to most of the rest. She is nearly unbeatable on a fast finish, and the team will put everything behind her to win a few stages.

Lorena Wiebes punches the air as she wins stage 3 of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes. She's wearing the European Champion kit, with blue bands and yellow stars on a white field.

Challenging Wiebes we have Emma Norsgaard , who is coming off some great form at the Tour. She’s not exactly a pure sprinter, but the circuit finishes of stages 1 and 5 are both good for the former Danish national champion.

Canyon-SRAM will start with Soraya Paladin , Maike van der Duin , and Sarah Roy , aka a very strong stage-hunting contingent. They will definitely be backing Bauernfeind for the overall, but expect to see those distinct helmets whenever there’s a fast finish. Together these three are a force.

Emma Norsgaard reacts with joy as she wins stage 6 of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes. Norsgaard, who described herself as "not a sprinter" won from a long breakaway and sprinted well enough to hold off the field, including Lotte Kopecky, who is shown blurred behind in the yellow jersey of race leader.

Still working her way back from a horrendous crash at RideLondon Classique, hopefully, we will see Elisa Balsamo up there for Lidl-Trek on a couple of stages. The former world champion hasn’t had the best of seasons, but it looked like the legs were coming around in Glasgow.

Finally, DSM-Firmenich has a strong sprinting option with Megan Jastrab , and Jayco-AlUla will line up with both Letizia Paternoster and Ruby Roseman-Gannon for any fast finishes.

Stage hunting teams

As it’s a weird time in the season and a lot of big names are taking some much-needed downtime, it’s worth mentioning a few times are lining up with what can only be stage-hunting ambitions.

Among those are Uno-X , who will no doubt be actively attempting to win a home stage in Norway. Jumbo-Visma left both their Dutch stars Marianne Vos and Reijanne Markus at home for this race, bringing three riders under 21. EF Education-Tibco-SVB , Liv Racing Teqfind , UAE Team ADQ , and Human Powered Health are three WorldTeams lining up with riders who might land themselves in the top 10 of the general classification, but will likely find the podium just out of reach.

And Fenix-Deceuninck will want to continue their success from the Tour, where they were one of the most active teams in the race at every stage.

Scandinavia — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Land of the midnight sun and home to great natural spectacles including the Northern Lights , you’re never far from the pristine wilderness of Norway’s fjords or Sweden’s forests on a tour to Scandinavia. Let’s not forget, holidays to Scandinavia’s urban jungles are just as rewarding, with world-renowned museums and much-loved nightspots.

Tour Highlights

  • Rent a kayak from the water’s edge and paddle across the crystal-clear waters of Oslo’s fjords. At 100 km in length there’s plenty of opportunity to explore its small islands, and hidden coves, while always in sight of the Norwegian capital.
  • Get your kit off and plunge into one of Scandinavia’s saunas. A way of life in the region, they are a popular way of spending time with friends old and new, and come in all manner of styles, from the ultra-modern to those registered as national monuments.
  • Head beyond the Arctic Circle and you’ll not only encounter snow even in the height of summer (Santa Claus has his village in Rovaniemi, Finland ) but also the midnight sun. In winter, enjoy a fantastic opportunity to marvel at the Northern Lights.
  • Enjoy a night out at Tivoli in Copenhagen, the second oldest amusement park and pleasure garden in the world. First opened in 1843, its perhaps best known for its wooden rollercoaster, Rutschebanen, built more than a hundred years ago.
  • Splash about in Finland’s Lakeland. The southeast of the country is home to most of the country’s 180,000 lakes, which offer chances to swim, fish, and even keep a lookout for endangered species such as the Saimaa ringed seal.

Travel Tips

  • June to September is best time for sightseeing and experiencing the midnight sun, while the winter months offer wondrously snowy panoramas and the best chance of catching the northern lights
  • Scandinavia is an expensive destination to visit, but a trip to Scandinavia doesn’t have to break the bank. Each capital runs free city walking tours by volunteers eager to impress, who have a great knowledge of the cheapest places to eat and drink in town too.
  • Scandinavians speak a wide range of languages and are generally fluent in English.
  • If you’re thinking of renting a car in Norway, opt for an electric version, which has the benefit of free parking and charging points (of which there are many), and exemption from road tolls and even ferry fees
  • Scandinavian buildings are very well insulated against the winter chill. The downside of this is that they can be rather hot and stuffy during the summer, so pack night clothing accordingly.

5. Chase the northern lights in Scandinavia

Best Scandinavian tour for:  a winter adventure and witnessing the auroras.

If seeing the northern lights is on your bucket list, Northern Norway is for you. It is an ideal destination for glimpsing the aurora borealis as they illuminate the night sky.

Northern Scandinavia is also the place to discover incredible Arctic wildlife, experience a stay in a snow hotel, enjoy winter sports and meet the native Sami people that call this part of the world home.

You can live out your wildest winter wonderland fantasies here. For a tour like this, we recommend you plan for at least 5-7 days to give you ample time to catch the mythical northern lights before you depart.

What is the best itinerary for a northern lights tour in Scandinavia?

Day 1:  Arrive in Tromsø, the “Capital of the North”. Set within the Arctic Circle, you're in for a true northern experience. In the evening, go on a guided tour into the wilderness, where you will hear about the local Sami folklore and hopefully see the blush of the aurora borealis.

Day 2: Spend the day taking   full advantage of your Arctic location and go on a dog sled tour through the pristine snowscapes of Tromsø.

Day 3:  Save this day for touring Tromsø itself. Duck into attractions like the Polar Museum and the Art Museum of Northern Norway. If you want more action, go cross-country skiing, ice fishing or take a cable car up to Mount Storsteinen.

Day 4:  If dog sledding kicked up the adrenalin, then you’ll be blown away by a private tour snowmobiling through the Arctic wilderness. A guide will lead you safely through some of the area’s most spectacular spots.

6. Explore Norway onboard iconic train journeys

Best Scandinavian tour for:  a taste of everything and enjoying the view from the window.

Go back to another time, when hopping on a train was the only way to travel. Crossing a country by rail is undeniably romantic, and Norway happens to be home to the Flåm Railway, considered to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.

If you love the idea of watching the scenery of Norway unfold before you from a train window, but would like to also experience sailing along the Norwegian fjords, then this tour was made for you.

7. Go on a Havila or Hurtigruten cruise

Best Scandinavian tour for:  seeing the fjords and taking in the sea air.

We could not, in all good conscience, write a list of the best Scandinavian tours without covering a cruise along the Norwegian coast and into the fjords of Norway. If you’re looking for a guided tour in Scandinavia, you can’t do much better.

On this classic itinerary, you would spend about 10 days bobbing along the undulating coastline of Norway, past sites such as Sognefjord , the Seven Sisters and the Bridal Veil . Best of all, you can hop on and off and experience treasures on shore like the city of Ålesund .

Oh, and did we mention there's train travel as well? That's right, on this route you also enjoy a trip on the wondrous Flåm Railway.

Nordic odyssey, august 2018, i have already recommended nordic visitor to others..

I have already recommended Nordic visitor to others. The price was very reasonable, and accommodations top notch. As we did the self guided tour the side tours available that we took were top rate. We enjoyed being able to spend time exploring on our own and not being bound by a full schedule. The transportation was wonderful. Our guide, Alda, was very helpful.

The golden triangle of scandinavia, august 2016, completely lived up to our expectations.

Irja was wonderful! She put our trip together perfectly and our entire visit from one country to the next was seamless. It could not have been any easier or well coordinated. My emails were responded to promptly and all my questions were answered thoroughly and with patience. I usually plan all my trips myself but it was so nice to let Irja know what I wanted and let her do all the tedious planning and booking. It was really amazing and our trip completely lived up to our expectations! I feel like a spoiled traveler now because Irja took a lot of the travel planning headache away from me and she did a really great job. We really appreciated the complimentary upgrades too!

Alan, United States

The golden triangle of scandinavia, april 2016, high degree of professionalism.

Probably the most important service I received was Cecilia's prompt answers to all my questions. My requests were handled expeditiously. As for the accommodations, they ranged from very good to excellent. Of particular note is the fact that Cecilia had to react quickly to hotel employees' strike at one of the hotels. She quickly found arranged for me to stay at another hotel, which was most impressive (both her ability to improvise and the quality of the hotel). She was also quite helpful in recommending certain places of interest to visit and the advisability of purchasing city passes for transportation and sightseeing.

Golden Route of the Nordic Countries, May 2019

Superb customer service.

Mikael provided superb customer service. Very pleased with his attention to detail. He was very courteous and quite helpful.

Nordic odyssey, july 2018, we will definitely use your services when we travel again.

We were very happy with everything. We did four countries during our tour and we enjoyed it very much. We were also able to customize many options which was great. I have to say a huge "thank you" to Alda. She was very knowledgeable and very helpful. She also helped us customize our tour the way we wanted. We will definitely use your services when we travel again.

We´d like to return.

The tour was highly enjoyable. We visited some wonderful places. Whilst we like to be independent, the organisation of our transport and accommodation was very good and allowed us to really relax and unwind. There are many places we'd like to return to. More time in Norway is certainly on our agenda!

Classic Scandinavia, June 2019

The location of the hotels could not have been better - all centrally located with access to points of interest and public transport. Transportation between cities was also well-planned.

Scandinavian highlights by car, september 2016, highly recommended.

My only question is: Why is there not an "Excellent" option? Our holiday was most excellent in every way...! From my first email enquiry regarding the tour to the last minute of our holiday every aspect was excellent. Cecilia made the whole planning experience smooth and seamless, and the tour itself was most excellent. Wow! What an incredible job Nordic Visitor does! We felt so spoilt because everything had been done for us... all we needed to do was drive and have fun. This was an incredible tour and I can't speak highly enough about the slick operation Nordic Visitor runs. Highly, highly recommended!

Highlights of scandinavia & finland cruise, july 2016.

The support that Cicci and her colleagues provided was outstanding. We had a few minor things that needed to be adjusted during our trip and we received immediate and prompt service. All questions were addressed quickly and when changes were required, all our requests were met with a willing attitude. The trip was wonderful and it was nice to know that we had someone to contact should we have encountered any problems.

The Classic Scandinavian Roundtrip, May 2019

Greatly appreciated.

The fact that the travel documents clearly laid out the necessary transfers for trains, boats, planes, etc. was greatly appreciated. When the transfers involved a tricky change, the documents made sure to describe the signs as well as possible to assist. It was also nice to have all of the documents given to us in a single email so access was simple and easy.

Duncan, Australia

Golden route of the nordic countries, may 2018, went very smoothly.

I was very impressed with the efficiency of your staff and how processes that were meant to work actually went very smoothly. We have been traveling for many years and your organization is the least stress creating travel group we have experienced.

I would definitely recommend your company. Very helpful on the phone when booking and arranging extra items such as GPS. Very good English spoken.

A Tale of Four Cities, July 2017

Amazing tour.

This was an amazing tour for us to take as a family holiday (with teenagers) giving us a little insight into each country. Clearly planned to make the most of each city.

Matt, United States

Scandinavian highlights by car, june 2016, went incredibly smoothly.

We had a great experience from the very beginning. Cicci was always quick to respond to emails and answered all our questions prior to us making our final booking. Once we booked all the details (hotels, etc) started coming in and it was really helpful to have the "highlights" booklet to help us plan what we wanted to see and where we should stop each day on our drive. Really everything went incredibly smoothly through out the entire trip! We have no complaints!!

Getting to Scandinavia

Many of Nordic Visitor’s tours of Scandinavia begin in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and largest city. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the main gateway for international air travel in Sweden and is served by dozens of airlines. Furthermore, it serves as a major hub for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) and Norwegian Air.

Here are examples of other airlines that fly to Stockholm Arlanda: United Airlines, British Airways, Air France, EasyJet, Lufthansa, KLM, Icelandair, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways

We recommend checking airline websites directly for flight availability and timetables. You can also use an airfare search engine, such as Skyscanner, Dohop or Kayak, for example.

Flights are not included in Nordic Visitor packages, but all of our itineraries can be customised with extra nights in Stockholm, or another arrival city in Scandinavia, if you’d like to rest up after your air journey.

Different ways you can experience Scandinavia

We have tours for all varieties of travel styles and interests. See our options for exploring Scandinavia below.

Independent cruise, independent train, scandinavian triangle, what to see on an 14-day tour of scandinavia.

Scandinavia is a region of Northern Europe covering Sweden , Denmark and Norway . Visiting all three countries in one trip makes perfect sense as they are well-connected via modern motorways, railways and waterways.

An excellent tried and tested route in this corner of Europe is a city-hopping trip around the Scandinavian Triangle , the capitals of Sweden, Denmark and Norway. With 14 days in Scandinavia, you could explore Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo at leisure, with enough time to get to know each city well.

Additionally, opting for a 14-day tour of Scandinavia means you can spend some days venturing beyond the Scandinavian Triangle too. You might like to visit other Nordic and Northern European destinations such as Helsinki and Tallinn, the capital cities of Finland and Estonia respectively.

Or, hop on a flight to Iceland to visit this spectacular country on the same trip. Another option is to see more of Norway, such as the famous fjords, or to drive through southern Sweden and the trendy city of Gothenburg.

  • First time in the Nordics? See our 7 amazing Scandinavia tour ideas for first-time visitors

Here’s one of our suggestions for a 14-day Scandinavia itinerary:

Day 1 - Arrive in Helsinki, Finland Fly into Helsinki Airport and head to your hotel in the city centre. Try tasty Finnish cuisine at a local restaurant, and see some of the capital’s top sights such as Senate Square, Uspenski Cathedral, and the Old Market Hall.

Day 2 - At leisure in Helsinki Enjoy more downtime in Helsinki to visit attractions like Sibelius Park, Finlandia Hall, the Finnish National Opera House, and Parliament House.

The capital of Finland is known for being a design hub, boasting its very own design district and “design tram route”. It’s also awash with gorgeous green spaces where you can enjoy a spot of people watching.

Day 3 - Ferry to Tallinn Next up is the capital of Estonia, Tallinn, which is just 2 hours away by ferry from Helsinki. Soak up the medieval architecture and atmospheric streets of this Baltic city today. You could walk from the Upper Town (Toompea), or visit the Orthodox St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and striking Toompea Castle

Day 4 - Baltic cruise to Sweden Enjoy another day getting to know lovely Tallinn, with its fascinating mix of Eastern and Western European influences. You might like to explore the Kadriorg district, Kadriorg Palace, or the Estonian Art Museum.

Later in the day, head to the port and embark on your Baltic cruise to Stockholm, an overnight journey with restaurants, shops and cafés on board to keep you entertained.

Day 5 - Arrive in Stockholm, Sweden In the morning of day 5, enjoy breakfast while watching as the vessel navigates through the Stockholm Archipelago, made up of around 30,000 islands.

After your cruise docks, spend some time walking through Gamla Stan, the centrally located Old Town. Enjoy a fika (a Swedish coffee break) at one of the local cafés in this medieval neighbourhood.

Day 6 - The highlights of Stockholm Spend a full day in the Swedish capital, discovering the city’s attractions and districts. You could join a walking tour to see the best of Stockholm in a day, taking you to must-see spots like the City Hall, Royal Palace and trendy Södermalm quarter.

Or, a ferry ride will whisk you off to the island of Djurgården, home to the Vasa Museum and Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. Meanwhile a day trip to Drottningholm Palace on the outskirts of town is highly recommended.

Day 7 - Fly to Copenhagen, Denmark Head to Stockholm Airport after breakfast and board a plane to Copenhagen. Once in Denmark’s capital, take a walk down the city’s popular Strøget street for a bite to eat, or go check out the fun and games at the old fashioned Tivoli Gardens amusement park.

  • Discover Scandinavia’s top cities you should visit

Day 8 - Discover Copenhagen Soak up the charms of Copenhagen today, either on your own or as part of a guided tour. You might want to visit Rosenborg Castle, the Botanical Garden and Torvehallerne food market.

We also recommend hopping on a boat tour to see Christiansborg Palace, the Royal Danish Opera House and the colourful Christianshavn Canal from the water.

Day 9 - Overnight cruise to Oslo, Norway Ahead of your journey to Oslo, spend the day enjoying more of Copenhagen. Why not make like the bicycle-happy Danes and rent a bike? You could check out the exquisite Amalienborg Palace, as well as the colourful Nyhavn harbour and the Little Mermaid statue.

Later, head to the port for your cruise to Oslo.

Day 10 - Explore Norway’s capital city After your ship arrives early in the morning, the whole day is yours to roam Oslo. Take a walk to the bustling Aker Brygge waterfront area and visit the Akershus Fortress. Or, head to the Bygdøy peninsula to explore historic museums.

If you love art, make sure to take a walk through the delightful Vigeland Sculpture Park. Don’t miss a visit to Oslo City Hall if you want to see where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held.

Day 11 - Scenic train journey to Flåm This morning, go to Oslo Central Station to begin your Norway in a Nutshell® tour – one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Look out the window to see picturesque landscapes and quaint villages like Gol and Geilo.

Change at Myrdal to board the Flåm Railway for one of the top highlights of the entire trip: a 900-metre (half-mile) descent to the picturesque village of Flåm, where you’ll stay for the night.

Day 12 - Norwegian fjord cruise Prepare to witness breathtaking Norwegian scenery today, as you hop on a cruise that takes you through beautiful fjords. You’ll be able to admire the glittering waters, cascading falls and forested mountains of Sognefjord, passing through Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. What other ideas are there for a 14-day Scandinavia itinerary?

There are many other ways you could experience Scandinavia in 14 days. One alternative is to swap Helsinki and Tallinn for a deeper exploration of Norway. This would give you the opportunity to discover towns like Trondheim and Ålesund as well as stunning Norwegian fjords and coastline.

You could also opt to travel further north in Scandinavia to hunt down the aurora borealis. Visit Swedish Lapland, Finnish Lapland or northern Norway in the Arctic Circle during winter, for the optimum chance of catching sight of the magical northern lights.

Good to know : Most of our itineraries aren't set in stone, and there are many possibilities for customised routes! We can modify your tour if you'd prefer to arrive in a different city, spend more free time in one destination than another, or add other towns to your trip.

Just ask your Nordic Visitor travel consultant for advice.

How about an 14-day Scandinavia road trip?

On a self-drive tour in Scandinavia , you’ll have the freedom to pull the car over at any attractions that catch your interest.

The best part? You won’t have to worry about where you’re going or sleeping, because your Nordic Visitor travel consultant has already sorted those local arrangements for you. You’ll also have access to our 24/7 emergency helpline should you need to call us at any point.

Your 14-day Scandinavia road trip could encompass a convenient circular route, starting and ending in Stockholm, Sweden.

After enjoying the first couple of days of your trip in Stockholm, you would drive south to the charming Swedish towns of Kalmar and Ystad. Stop for 2 nights in each to explore the countryside at leisure.

Afterwards, drive over Öresund Bridge to reach Copenhagen, then take the overnight ferry to Oslo the next day. Soak up the delights of the Norwegian capital for 2 nights before driving east to Örebro in Sweden.

Enjoy the beautiful Swedish countryside, rural villages, and grand castles and manor houses of the region before you return to Stockholm for your final night.

  • Day 1 – Arrive at Stockholm Airport.
  • Day 2 – Overnight in Stockholm.
  • Day 3 – Pick up rental car and drive through southern Sweden. Overnight in Kalmar area of Sweden.
  • Day 4 – Overnight in Kalmar.
  • Day 5 – Overnight in Ystad.
  • Day 6 – Overnight in Ystad.
  • Day 7 – Overnight in Copenhagen.
  • Day 8 – Journey by ferry to Oslo.
  • Day 9 – Overnight in Oslo.
  • Day 10 – Overnight in Oslo.
  • Day 11 – Overnight in Örebro area of Sweden.
  • Day 12 – Overnight in Örebro area of Sweden.
  • Day 13 – Drop off rental car and spend the night in Stockholm.
  • Day 14 – Depart from Stockholm Airport.

If you want your Scandinavia road trip to include Helsinki, you could start in the Finnish capital and take a Baltic cruise to Stockholm from there. Or, drive from Oslo to Bergen and spend a few days discovering the world-famous fjords of Norway.

All of Nordic Visitor’s Scandinavia self-drive tour packages can be tailored by our local experts with extra nights at select locations or modified driving routes. If you have any particular attractions in mind, just contact us to ask.

Excellent trip that fit all the highlights of Iceland into 3 days, from glacier hikes to lagoon rides and lava fields, while not feeling rushed. Note most excursions are optional add ons. The free day on either side of the driving days was great as we were able to explore more. Tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about Iceland. The small size of the tour was great as we got to know each other and become good mates over the few days. Highly recommend this tour for those wanting to see as much of Iceland in a few days.

Scenic Norway Tour

Scenic Norway

A very good and enjoyable tour led by an excellent guide (Peter) whose quiet informative and often humorous style was a key plus for our holiday. Also excellent was the driver Maciek and his coach - a very smooth journey up and down fjords, mountains and through all those tunnels. Hotels were a bit variable as below: OSLO - Thon Europa. Good location but small room and food was average. Staff helpful. RAULAND - hotel seemed a bit 'out of season' and the decor was a bit jaded. The pool complex was shut due to an electrical fault. Food average - not much choice at breakfast. BERGEN - Scandic Orner - smart business hotel but rooms very small. breakfast buffet excellent STALHEIM - best location for scenic views. Hotel seems a bit dated and decor a bit tired but has great atmosphere. Food OK Loen - Alexandra - best hotel by a mile. Wonderful pool complex. Food choice good and high quality. Lillehammer Scandic - big, busy resort hotel. Rooms were cramped but food choice and quality was good. Oslo - Scandic Victoria - Great location but a disappointing hotel. Rooms again small and food choice and quality poor. When I asked for some cream or ice cream to accompany my dessert (a piece of dry cake) I was told there wasn't any - really? Thankfully the weather behaved itself after a damp day or so in Bergen. I think the itinerary worked well and the mix of boat trip, train ride and fjord drives gave us a wonderful taster of Scenic Norway.

8 Days Guided Iceland Circle

Iceland is an incredible country to visit and the time we spent there was priceless. We had a technical problem: due to the weather the flight to Reykjavík was cancelled and postponed to the following day. We announced the travel agency and they provided a taxi in order th catch the tour. Instead to have a transportation from the company we had to pay an additional 300euros regardless was not our fault for the delay. Maybe you should consider such situation in your program. Another observation is about the guide. He was totally disinterested on our existence, totally unprepared to be a guide with knowledge, also a little bit impolite and rude.
