Its roots are still very much alive and can be seen in the red brick townhomes, and turn of the century factories that are found throughout the area.

Secret Food Tours Washington DC - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Big Ben to Tower Bridge

  • All destinations
  • Washington DC
  • A "my-lips-are-sealed" discovery of DC, Washington DC

What you’ll do

Mystical Washington DC awaits, via hidden gems you won't find in a guidebook, like the powerful sculptures of a Native American chief in urban Rock Creek Park, or the city views from a cathedral resembling Notre-Dame. Look up from the tourist crowd outside the castle-like Miller mansion to see a ceramic cat in honor of the feline friends aboard a navy commander's ship, then dart to the White House crowds to see a bench where a Wall Street fat cat waited to be summoned by Roosevelt. Next, marvel at the dainty carvings of Native American artisans in a hidden shop, followed by a visit to the famous sculpture of Albert Einstein (with insider info, of course). Pose outside an abandoned technicolor cathedral, before seeing the original Lincoln Memorial - who knew!

Where you’ll go

With a DC host who knows what's up, travel along a secret route, underneath a bridge in an urban jungle decorated with Sioux chief sculptures, or at a breathtaking viewing spot at the National Cathedral. Dart to tree-lined Massachusetts Avenue where a hidden cat keeps an eye on the city, before strolling to Lafayette Square north of the White House, home to a late millionaire’s beloved hiding spot. Stroll along the diverse city to a haven of Native American artistry, then visit "stars" often missed in a grove of trees tucked in the southwest corner of the Academy of Sciences. On Delaware Avenue behind towering trees hides a cathedral with a twist, splashed in a multitude of colors, then head to Indiana Avenue, where the original statue of Lincoln poses.

  • You've heard of the Albert Einstein monument but see its nearby milky way of stars often missed.
  • Visit shops off the tourist track, brimming with dainty carvings by Native American artisans.
  • Your secret adventure doesn't have to end there - your host knows the best under the radar spots to try on the rest of your trip.

Thank you Kalid for this nice moment and these great taste discoveries in typical restaurants!

Our tour guide Adam was very knowledgeable and showed us wonderful sights around Singapore. Took us to a delicious lunch spot and made sure we Al had a fun and enjoyable afternoon.

Milo was an excellent guide for our needs. The fact that he's European doesn't feel as a limit but probably an advantage since it's easier for him to relate with our perspective. He clearly did his homework and studied thoroughly the history of Kyoto - so you're not missing that either.

Had a great tour of Kyoto with Kenya, he was very knowledgeable on the local area and also knew lots about the ancient history of Japan and the shrines. Thank you for a great tour Kenya!

Secret spots in DC

Reading Room at Petworth Citizen

1.  Reading Room at Petworth Citizen

  • Cocktail bars
  • Mount Pleasant

Petworth Citizen is a top notch, casual destination for any day of the week, serving both classic cocktails and revamped interpretations alongside a largely local beer list. You'll definitely want to get in the back area Reading Room on the weekends, when Chantal Tseng offers her tour de force Literary Cocktail sessions. Each week, she delivers an entire cocktail menu devoted to authors, books or literary subjects of her choosing.

Dupont Underground

2.  Dupont Underground

  • Things to do

What was once an underground streetcar station now serves as a public platform for visual, sound, performance and interdisciplinary art. Open only during scheduled events, the 75,000-square-foot space originally opened in 1949 and sat vacant for decades before a group of dedicated artists banded together to re-open it to the public.

2 Birds 1 Stone

3.  2 Birds 1 Stone

  • Logan Circle

The menu at this subterranean spot changes weekly and is drawn up (literally) by bar director Adam Bernbach, who also oversees the drink programs at Doi Moi, Estadio and Proof. Depending on the night, the elaborate doodles may spell out a tequila-based dark and stormy, Pimm’s Cup or punch du jour. The space is modern, eclectic and bright (considering it’s hidden underground), and the risqué bathrooms are plastered with vintage nudie pics.

Crispus Attucks Park

4.  Crispus Attucks Park

Chicken + Whiskey

5.  Chicken + Whiskey

Left Door

6.  Left Door

Tom Brown and head bartender Mick Perrigo partnered up to open Left Door, adding another worthy destination to the bustling 14th Street scene. Tucked away behind an unmarked door and up a staircase is the lounge space, likely filled with people looking for exciting cocktails, low key vibes and good conversation. The bar is somewhat reminiscent of a comfortable home parlor, just one that happens to be replete with vintage spirits and high-end ingredients from across the globe. The cocktail menu is updated frequently, offering a pleasant excuse to keep returning.

United States National Arboretum

7.  United States National Arboretum

  • Attractions
  • Parks and gardens

Technically a research division of the Agriculture Department, this 446-acre haven always has many more trees than people, even on its busiest days during the spring azalea season. Highlights include a boxwood collection, dwarf conifers, an Asian collection, a herb garden and “herbarium” of dried plants, as well as the National Bonsai Collection, which contains more than 200 trees donated by Japan and is said to be worth something in the order of $5 million. Also on display, somewhat incongruously, are 22 columns removed from the Capitol’s East Front during its 1958 expansion. See the website for details of tram tours, talks and other events such as garden fairs.

The Gibson

8.  The Gibson

  • U Street Corridor

The Gibson has managed to maintain its popularity and place in the city’s cocktail culture for years. Behind the unmarked doors, a speakeasy-style operation offers a lengthy lineup of compelling seasonal cocktails covering a full spectrum of spirits and taste profiles, as well as a variety of old-time favorites.

Darth Vader and space window at National Cathedral

9.  Darth Vader and space window at National Cathedral

  • Religious buildings and sites

Washington National Cathedral was built in 14th-century Gothic style, stone upon stone, without structural steel, an exercise that took most of the 20th century and was only finished in 1990. Its medievalism has been somewhat updated: there’s a gargoyle of Darth Vader in the north-west corner, while the much-admired stained-glass Space Window contains a piece of lunar rock. The top of the tower is the highest point in DC; there are great views from the observation gallery. The cathedral offers self-paced CD-based audio tours; alternatively, join one of various guided tours, which are held at regular intervals.

Blind Whino SW Arts Club

Step into a whimsical world of Lewis Carroll and other cherished children's book characters to see Alice, The Queen of Hearts, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Peter Rabbit, and many more iconic creations come to life through a mesmerizing ensemble of meticulously crafted bronze sculptures.

The genesis of this one-in-the-world exhibition traces back to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London, where Leonards, who created The Mansion and the O Museum in 1980, was captivated by a remarkable collection of handmade bronze sculptures.

The Robert James Studio, which created the exhibit, is a three-time, five-star winner at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, considered the pinnacle of horticultural excellence in the UK.

ABOUT THE ARTIST James Coplestone has been making art works of various kinds for nearly 30 years.

Living in the rolling hills of West Dorset, England, his sculptures — based upon his love of literature are taking shape. Classic illustrations modeled in clay and then turned into bronze.

He uses old tools and finger prints to press, move and model clay into position to capture the breath of the character... as if they have momentarily stepped out of the book into the three dimensional world.

The Rise and Reign of Georgetown Cupcakes: A Washington DC Food Tours Highlight

Washington DC Food Tours

In the heart of the nation’s capital, where political intrigues and global decisions often overshadow simpler pleasures, a sugary uprising has quietly been taking place. Washington DC Food Tours have long been celebrated for offering a kaleidoscope of flavors, representing the city’s rich cultural influences. Yet, it’s in Georgetown, the district’s historic enclave, where a modest dessert has ascended to royalty. The Georgetown cupcake, a seemingly humble treat, has become synonymous with the culinary identity of the area, capturing the palates and hearts of both locals and visitors.

One might wonder: In a city known for its monuments, museums, and political prowess, how did a cupcake manage to rise to such prominence? As we traverse the gastronomic pathways of Georgetown, we’ll uncover the confluence of factors that led to the rise and reign of this dessert icon. The story is one that marries tradition with innovation, local enterprise with widespread adoration.

The Historical Roots of Georgetown

Georgetown, a picturesque enclave within the expansive capital, carries with it a legacy that intertwines political prominence with cultural allure. Established in 1751, years before Washington D.C. itself was founded, Georgetown originally functioned as a port and commercial hub, courtesy of its advantageous positioning along the Potomac River.

The very soil of Georgetown bears witness to significant chapters of American history. Throughout the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, its streets were trodden upon by influential figures, making decisions that would shape the fate of a budding nation. As the years rolled on, the area gracefully transformed, transitioning from an industrial waterfront to a fashionable residential and shopping district.

Today, one can’t help but sense the weight of history while navigating through Georgetown. Notable landmarks, such as the imposing Francis Scott Key Bridge, provide visual reminders of the district’s storied past. Yet, it’s not just architectural marvels that command attention. The very spot where “The Exorcist” was filmed remains etched in the collective memory of movie aficionados, lending a dash of Hollywood to Georgetown’s historical narrative.

The Sweet Invasion: Georgetown’s Cupcake Phenomenon

The culinary world often witnesses trends that momentarily capture the spotlight, but few have demonstrated the staying power quite like Georgetown’s cupcakes. This sugary delight, a simple confection at its core, has garnered an almost cult-like following in Georgetown. But what spurred this sugary surge?

Georgetown, with its receptive culinary ambiance, has consistently provided fertile ground for food innovations. Artisanal bakeries and specialty food shops steadily gained ground, and amidst this backdrop, the cupcake found its gourmet footing.

Initially, the community’s affection for cupcakes was a local phenomenon. Their portability made them a preferred snack for those on the move, and their varying flavors and designs appealed to a wide audience. But it wasn’t just about taste; it was the entire package. The joy of choosing, the anticipation of the first bite, and the pleasure of relishing unique flavors became an irresistible draw.

However, while local love played a significant role, it was the national spotlight from the “DC Cupcakes” television show that truly amplified their status. Following the journey of two sisters navigating the world of cupcake entrepreneurship, the show didn’t just highlight the intricacies of baking; it showcased the cultural affection for cupcakes in Georgetown, casting them not merely as desserts but as community icons.

The ensuing popularity from the show cemented Georgetown’s position on the culinary map, not just for its historical significance but as the hub of a nationwide cupcake craze. Social media further fanned the flames, with captivating images of these tiny masterpieces being shared, liked, and commented upon, bringing even more foot traffic to Georgetown in search of the perfect cupcake.

Business of Baking: The Cupcake Economy

Georgetown’s cupcake scene became a significant force in the district’s economy. As their popularity soared, numerous shops emerged, hoping to tap into the sweet success. However, with rising numbers came the challenge of standing out. While some shops lured customers with unique flavors or sustainable ingredients, others emphasized ambiance, targeting social media enthusiasts.

But the industry wasn’t all frosting and sprinkles. Some stores, despite best efforts, had to close due to factors like steep costs or shifting consumer tastes. Yet, there were positives. The cupcake rise meant more local jobs, increased demand for suppliers, and integration into local events, attracting both locals and tourists.

Enduring shops displayed adaptability, continuous innovation, and an emphasis on quality. Georgetown’s cupcake landscape serves as both an inspiring and cautionary tale for food entrepreneurs.

Beyond Cupcakes: Other Georgetown Sweets to Savor

While Georgetown may have gained particular renown for its cupcakes, the district also shines brightly with a variety of other sweet offerings. Venturing beyond the familiar realm of cupcakes, one will find a diverse world of confections waiting to be explored.

Macarons , for instance, have become increasingly popular. Light and airy, with a crisp shell and creamy center, these French confections offer a sophisticated sweetness. Numerous shops in Georgetown have perfected the art of macaron-making, offering flavors that range from classic vanilla and chocolate to more adventurous options like lavender or passion fruit.

Another standout in the district is the traditional American pie. Local bakeries have taken this classic dessert to new heights, with flaky crusts and luscious fillings that sing with flavor. Whether you’re a fan of tart cherry, sweet apple, or decadent chocolate cream, there’s a slice waiting in Georgetown that will surely satisfy your cravings.

Cookies, too, have their dedicated followers. From chewy chocolate chip to buttery shortbread, these small delights have big flavor. Some shops even offer innovative twists on old classics, infusing global flavors or incorporating unconventional ingredients.

Comparing these treats to cupcakes might be like comparing apples and oranges. Each dessert has its unique charm and fanbase. Yet, what they all share is Georgetown’s unmistakable commitment to quality and flavor. Whether it’s a cupcake, a macaron, or a slice of pie, every bite in this district is a celebration of sweet craftsmanship.

A Feast for the Senses: What to Expect on the Washington DC Food Tour

Washington DC Food Tours

The Washington DC Food Tour promises a multisensory exploration through Georgetown’s gastronomic scene, harmonizing history and flavor. Attendees can anticipate a combination of traditional American fare and global culinary influences. Sample delights like famous bagels, Philly cheesestake eggrolls and many more.

Beyond taste, the tour engages other senses. The ambient sounds, from lively conversations to the distant Potomac River murmur, immerse visitors in the district’s lively atmosphere. Visual treats await as you navigate Georgetown’s lanes, where historic structures meet contemporary art expressions.

To sum it up, the Washington DC Food Tour extends beyond Georgetown’s boundaries and cupcakes, presenting a dynamic blend of the city’s past, its culinary innovations, and the infectious energy that defines this capital district.

Washington DC Food Tours

Cupcakes, undeniably, are a shining chapter in this ongoing tale, but they are just one of many gastronomic highlights awaiting eager explorers. From the age-old streets lined with classic architecture to modern eateries pushing the boundaries of taste, Georgetown is a place where tradition and innovation coexist harmoniously. The Washington DC Food Tours elegantly weave these two threads together, offering participants an immersive experience that bridges the gap between the past and present.

For those with an insatiable curiosity and a penchant for delightful flavors, there’s no better place to be than Georgetown. And there’s no better way to truly savor it than through the curated experiences of the Washington DC Food Tours . So, to all avid explorers and gourmands, Georgetown beckons. Let your senses lead the way, and discover a world where history, culture, and cuisine come together in the most delightful union.

‘Travel the world without leaving the city’: International City Food Festival brings global cuisine, culture to DC

Friday evening and Saturday in D.C. this week will open local taste buds to a world of flavor, as the International City Food Festival  takes over downtown’s The Square DC .

The food festival will take place from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

The festival is the newest offering from Passport DC , a monthlong series of events in May hosted by Events DC, highlighting the city’s “thriving international diplomatic community” and diverse cultures.

“Passport DC offers something for everyone and the International City Food Festival is a great way to celebrate the diverse communities that call Washington, D.C. home,” Events DC President and CEO Angie M. Gates said.

The theme of this weekend’s food festival is “The Snack Arcade,” leaning into nostalgic vibes — including vintage arcade games.

“D.C.’s such an international city. … Some of these nostalgic snacks for people all over the planet are different than what they are for us,” said Svetlana Legetic, founder of ExactlyAgency.com, which partners creatively with Event DC. She said they wanted the theme to be “joyous and fun for the whole family.”

A full list of restaurants and vendors participating in the International City Food Festival can be found on the Events DC website .

Another popular event this weekend is the Around the World Embassy Tour, which lets visitors experience cultural performances from over 60 embassies. The event takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A full list of participating embassies is available online .

Jesse Devlin-Whitworth, director of production operations at Events DC, said there’s an app that’ll help you decide which embassies to swing by first. In addition to favorites like China, Jamaica, and Mexico, he also lists a few other noteworthy options to check out.

“I know that Armenia is participating for the first time ever, so we’re really excited about that,” Devlin-Whitworth said. “Australia will be participating. They have not in several years because they have a brand new embassy. They can’t wait to show it to the world. ”

The U.K. also has a new embassy and will be participating, Devlin-Whitworth said.

“It’s such a unique opportunity, something that you really can only do here in D.C.,” said D.C. resident Paige Muller, who grew up overseas and has frequented these types of events since she moved to the District. “Every country in the world has an embassy so you really can travel the world without leaving the city.”
