The parents of an 18-year-old high school graduate who fell overboard on a sunset cruise in the Bahamas have broken their silence.

Cameron Robbins went on a trip to the Bahamas to celebrate his graduation from the University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He and several friends were aboard the Blackbeard’s Revenge cruise on 24 May when Cameron allegedly jumped off the boat on a dare.

The US Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force spent several days searching for Cameron before suspending their efforts on 27 May. Following his presumed death, a memorial was planned for the teenager on Sunday (4 June).

Speaking from their home ahead of the service, Cameron’s parents William and Shari Robbins, both 54, told The New York Post they were aware of the impact their “funny and kind-hearted” son had made on people following updates of the tragic incident believed to have cut his life short.

“We are just mourning our son right now,” Ms Robbins told the Post . “We appreciate you calling. Maybe we will be able to talk more later.”

“We appreciate everyone’s support,” Mr Robbins also said.

The University Lab School Director Kevin George told WAFB that Cameron had attended the school for 13 years. The teen also played baseball for the school, which operates as part of Louisiana State University.

“Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling. Extra counselors will be available on campus to speak with students and faculty who are struggling to process this news. Our thoughts are with the Robbins family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well,” Mr George wrote.

The graduation trip was not organised by the school.

Baton Rouge high school senior Cameron Robbins, 18, is missing after falling off a boat in the Bahamas

According to his obituary, Cameron was not only an accomplished athlete but also loved country music and was a “big star” in karaoke.

“He was a tough player, battling back from multiple injuries, known to pitch through separated shoulders and broken hands. He hoped to continue his baseball career at the college level,” the tribute read. “...Though he left this world far too soon, he lived a life full of good friends and family.”

In a statement provided to The Independent, Jonathan Chia, a representative for Pirates’ Revenge Ltd, the parent company of Blackbeard’s Revenge, said Cameron went overboard at approximately 9.40pm local time in Montagu Bay off Athol Island in the Bahamas.

Video captured in the moments after Cameron jumped into the water showed the 18-year-old swimming around the vessel as passengers on the sunset cruise yelled at him. In the footage, individuals can be heard urging Cameron to grab onto the buoy that they threw into the water for him.

“The crew executed the ‘man overboard’ protocol in line with all approved safety procedures and company policies to ensure the best chance of retrieving an individual who has gone overboard,” Mr Chia said.

After Coast Guard crews searched more than 325 square miles, they concluded their efforts with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force on 27 May. Although searches have ended, the US Coast Guard is asking anyone with new information to contact the District Seven watchstanders at 305-415-6800.

A GoFundMe has been started to benefit Cameron’s family as they deal with the aftermath of the difficult situation.

Meanwhile, online speculation has swirled over whether Cameron was attacked by a shark in the water.

Shark Seen in Extended Video of HS Graduate Who Disappeared Jumping From Bahamas Ship

senior trip shark attack

Eighteen-year-old high school graduate Cameron Robbins was on a celebratory trip in the Bahamas when he jumped off a ship on May 24, allegedly on a dare. The US Coast Guard called off the search after two days, but Robbins has still not been found. Blurry and dark videos have been circulating on social media, leading many to believe there may have been a shark in the water with the high school graduate from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise was northeast of Nassau, near Athol Island, an area that is home to a lot of marine life, including sharks, experts told Fox News. Though these types of incidents occur for different reasons, an estimated one to two people go overboard on a cruise ship each month, a report from Cruise Lines International showed, reported The Points Guy .

Investigators are weighing in on reasons why Robbins has not been recovered yet. Some suspect he encountered a shark.

Chilling videos showing Robbins jumping off the ship have been circulating on various social media platforms. Some initially suspected a current could have pulled Robbins away from the ship and the life preserver that was thrown in the water. But others have pointed out a blurry shape in the dark waters that appears to look eerily like a shark, as seen in this video posted by Florida Boy on YouTube.

Royal Defense Force Commodore Raymond King said, “It’s an area that is really shark-infested,” reported Fox News . On the other hand, spokesperson for the United Cajun Navy, Brian Trascher, says nothing is certain at this point.

Trascher told Fox News: "We definitively don't have anything conclusive enough to determine if Cameron Robbins came in contact with any marine life. We are consulting with professors at the LSU Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences for expertise.”

Without a life vest, chances of survival are significantly lower.

King noted in an update that without a life vest, the odds of survival were slim. "The probability of survival decreases significantly, particularly if a person did not have on a life vest and particularly if a person is perceived to be intoxicated,” King said. "It is so unfortunate, but I don't want the family to lose hope.”

Trascher pointed out that the “inclement” weather conditions the night of the incident are another factor that has made it challenging to locate Robbins.

Cruise lines recommend following a few rules to stay safe.

Even though much of the news coverage about cruise ships tends to be negative, there are only rare tragic occurrences. It is reportedly one of the safest forms of travel, per Travel Pulse . But there are important rules to follow to increase your safety and limit accidents while aboard a ship.

The majority of cruise ship related injuries are due to falls, so passengers should use and respect handrails while aboard, advises cruiseline.com . Also, be careful of how much alcohol you consume as that can impair judgment as well as mental and physical abilities.

The teen’s local community is hoping for the best.

The school Robbins graduated from and attended for over 10 years has been holding prayer vigils since he disappeared and has offered counseling to the students at Baton Rouge’s University Laboratory School, per Fox News. A Facebook user who appeared to be a friend of the Robbins' family, Drew Sutton, also posted an update on Facebook asking for prayers for Robbins to be recovered.

Sutton wrote, “Please keep Cameron Robbins and his family in prayer. He's been missing since late Wednesday night in the Bahamas on his senior trip. May god's mercy and peace surround us in this time as we keep hoping Cameron will be found, soon!”

Cameron Robbins, 18, was on a sunset cruise while in the Bahamas to celebrate graduating high school.

The terrifying moment that a teenager leapt off a tourist ship, reportedly after being dared to take the plunge by a fellow passenger, was captured on camera.

A life preserver was tossed in the water after he jumped off the ship, but he swam away from it. And the next moment, he was gone.

There is speculation Cameron may have been trying to get away from a shark after video captured a shadowy image in the water.

A shark sighting could also explain why the Louisiana teenager simply vanished in the water.

Cameron and his classmates were out sailing on Blackbeard's Revenge, a ship made to look like a pirate vessel.

The group was staying at the Atlantis Paradise Resort. They had taken a sunset cruise that night and were sailing near an uninhabited island when passengers said Cameron jumped into the water.

The high school baseball star, who was planning to attend LSU in the fall, was remembered by his friends and classmates in Baton Rogue at a tearful prayer vigil.

Police: Shark kills US tourist snorkeling in Bahamas

  • Copy Link copied

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A shark attacked and killed a U.S. cruise ship passenger who was snorkeling in waters around the Bahamas on Tuesday, according to authorities.

The incident involved a 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania and occurred at a popular snorkeling spot near Green Cay in the northern Bahamas, police spokeswoman Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told The Associated Press.

“It’s unfortunate,” she said.

Skippings said the woman’s family identified it as a bull shark.

Royal Caribbean International said in a statement to the AP that the person died after arriving at a local hospital for treatment and that the company is helping their loved ones. They said the guest was participating in an independent shore excursion in Nassau and had been sailing on Harmony of the Seas, which is on a seven-night trip after departing Florida on Sunday.

The majority of shark attacks in the Caribbean have occurred in the Bahamas, with two reported in 2019, one of them fatal. That incident involved a Southern California woman who was on vacation and was attacked by three sharks near Rose Island, located just a half mile from where Tuesday’s attacked occurred.

In December 2020, a fatal shark attack was reported in the French Caribbean territory of St. Martin, the first such incident in that region.

Overall, at least 32 shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1749, followed by 13 attacks in Cuba during that time period, including one in 2019, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

Michael Heithaus, a marine biologist at Florida International University in Miami, said in a phone interview that the high number of attacks in the Bahamas is likely linked to the fact that there are a lot of people in the water in that area and that it has a robust marine ecosystem.

He said the Bahamas has a variety of shark species, the majority of which do not pay attention to people, except for bull sharks and tiger sharks.

“They get to very large sizes, and they eat big prey,” Heithaus said, adding that sharks have incredible sensory systems and can be attracted to food, sounds and smells in the water.

But overall, shark attacks remain rare, he stressed.

Worldwide, there were 137 shark attacks last year, 73 of them unprovoked, according to the International Shark Attack File.

Experts say it is ‘unlikely’ teenager Cameron Robbins was eaten by shark

Experts have cast doubt on the theory Cameron Robbins was eaten by a shark. So what did happen?

Grainy cellphone footage shows recent Louisiana graduate Cameron Robbins swimming in Bahamian waters at night, but as the camera pans left for a second he disappears — never to be seen again.

Some claim the video appears to show a shark closing in on the 18-year-old, but longtime scuba and marine search and rescue experts explain to The Post how several other outcomes need to be considered and explain why they think his body is yet to be recovered two weeks later.

Efforts by the coast guard from nearby Nassau and Robbins’ family were called off after two days when no trace of the teenager were found.

Wednesday will mark two weeks since Robbins, a high school athlete, disappeared, leaving his grieving family without answers.

“He was lost at sea after being reported missing off the coast of Athol Island in the Bahamas on the evening of May 24,” states a recent obituary honouring the beloved brother, son and grandson.

Cameron Robbins vanished while swimming in Bahamian waters at night

“Though he left this world far too soon, he lived a life full of good friends and family He was funny and kind-hearted, but also intense and driven.”

Was it a shark attack?

Robbins graduated from the University Lab School in Baton Rouge three days before he vanished in the “shark-infested” waters off Athol Island in the Bahamas.

He had leapt from Blackbeard’s Revenge, a pirate ship-style vessel, just moments earlier.

The haunting video footage shows Robbins swimming away from a rescue buoy as onlookers shout for him to grab the device.

The shadow of a mysterious being can be seen in the water just feet from where he swam.

Internet viewers speculated the object was a shark which pulled him under.

But experts largely reject the claim.

“We’ve consulted with oceanography and fisheries experts,” said Brian Trascher, vice president and spokesperson for the United Cajun Navy, a non-profit that has worked with the Robbins family. “They don’t believe … that he came in contact with any time of shark or predatory marine life.

“And until we get better video or something more conclusive, that’s going to be our position.”

Butch Hendrick, president and founder of public safety dive training company Lifeguard Systems, has spent decades familiarising himself with the Caribbean waters, including off the Bahamas.

“I don’t hear about a lot of shark attacks in the Bahamas,” he told The Post Friday.

He noted that boats such as the one Robbins and his classmates had been on, often serve food that is then dumped or spilled into the water, which can attract marine life, such as sharks.

Marine life, such as sharks, are “smart enough to realise that’s a boat that comes out all the time and it’s going to have food coming off,” Hendricks, who has developed rescue methods in 15 countries, told The Post.

But the behaviour of the object seen in the water with Robbins was not indicative of a shark.

“The tendency is not that [the shark] came in, took him, and took him to the depth,” Hendricks went on.

Footage of the moment Robbins vanished went viral after he swam away from a life ring for no reason

He noted the lack of any sign of blood in the water.

“They would hit him, that could be enough to totally incapacitate [him]. That could be enough to cause him to drown right there.”

Further, it’s unusual for a shark to actually finish eating a human it attacked, he noted.

“The tendency more often is to take a bite, shake and decide this isn’t what they wanted,” he said.

As for tiger sharks, which are known to swim in the waters off the Athol Island, “they can take a very large chunk,” Hendricks said.

“But the concept that they came back and ate more is slim.”

What did happen to Cameron Robbins?

Cristina Zenato, a longtime diver and Bahamas-based shark and ocean conservationist, told The Post she was not involved in the case at all, but suspected Robbins could have suffered hypothermia, then drowned.

“From what I saw, Cameron was wearing just shorts, and might have had a certain level of alcohol in his blood, which causes vasodilation,” she wrote in an email. “Chances are he didn’t survive hypothermia which contrary to popular belief can happen in matter of an hour or so, even in Caribbean waters.”

Hendricks, much like Zenato, questioned how much alcohol, if any, were in Robbins’ system at the time, and noted that could have contributed to the circumstances.

But Hendricks, whose rescue and recovery training company is one of the oldest in the nation, also wondered whether Robbins could have lost his breath after jumping from the boat.

“When he hits the water, does it simply knock the wind out of him and he can’t catch his breath?” he said.

Robbins may have been washed into an underwater channel

“Knocking the wind out of himself when he hits the water is a very high possibility – now he’s struggling and he could sink.”

The current at the time would have likely also played a role, Hendricks said, as well as the possibility that Robbins could have hit his head during his descent.

“So, we don’t see the thrashing, we don’t see [blood]. A better chance that he just, he hits his head on the side of the boat or he gets the wind knocked out of him when he hits the water, he can’t catch his breath and then, in 60 seconds he’s leaving the surface.”

He called the chances Robbins could have swum to the safety of a shore “not impossible, but reasonably slim.”

Gone forever?

The US Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) spent two days searching the waters for any sign of Robbins before suspending their efforts, as is their protocol if they cannot find any trace of an individual missing at sea.

Hendricks, no stranger to search and rescue procedures, said officials likely scoured the water surface for any evidence floating in the water.

Whether or not Robbins’ body sank after jumping from the boat, his remains likely would have floated – unless he suffered any wounds or punctures to his body during his time in the water.

“This happened well over a week and a half ago,” Hendricks said. “In that water temperature, he should have floated.”

In addition to the temperature and any injuries to the body, the water’s depth would also play a role in whether Robbins’ body resurfaced, Hendricks explained.

“It could very well mean the body is gone forever,” he said.

“It’s been too long for that temperature and for that depth, unless the water is very deep there – unless we’re talking water that’s greater than 100 feet,” he went on. “That body should have been up – unless it can’t float.”

Hendricks also noted the existence of a 200-foot underwater channel near where Robbins went into the water.

If the teen did drift into the channel, Hendricks said, “he’s not coming up.”

Woman missing, feared dead after ‘massive’ shark attack in Bahamas: report

A woman is missing and feared dead after she was attacked by a shark while diving in the Bahamas, according to an MSN.com report. The 47-year-old, who is from Germany, was on vacation and took part in a diving expedition in the Grand Bahamas’ West End on Tuesday when she was mauled by the animal.

The woman was reportedly pulled below the surface by the shark and never reappeared. A search party was dispatched to aid in her rescue, but only her diving gear was recovered.

According to the report, the purpose of the diving expedition was to encounter tiger sharks. Unfortunately, she came across an aggressive, “massive” tiger shark, which is believed to be the culprit in Tuesday’s attack.

Tiger sharks can grow up to 18 feet in length and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds.

The attack took place at 10:30 AM and reports noted that the woman had only briefly been in the water before the tragic encounter. There has been no trace of her since.

The same report highlighted another attack in the Bahamas back in June, which resulted in a 73-year-old woman losing her leg to a shark attack. Heidi Ernst, from Iowa, was climbing onto a boat when a shark latched onto her leg.

The aftermath of that attack required the leg to be amputated.

There has seemingly been a rise of reported shark attacks in the Bahamas and other areas in recent years. Last summer, the New York/New Jersey area also saw a rise in attacks and experts offered these tips.

Family of shark attack survivor speaks out in ‘GMA’ exclusive interview

Tatyana Koltunyuk remembers seeing a cloud of blood in the water.

The family of the victim of the first shark attack in New York City since the 1950s is speaking out in an exclusive interview about the 65-year-old's experience and how she is recovering.

Tatyana Koltunyuk credits a police officer, who created a makeshift tourniquet to stop blood flow, with saving her life after she was bitten by a shark off the coast of Rockaway Beach in New York City earlier this month, according to her daughter, Dasha Koltunyuk.

MORE: Woman who lost a leg in shark attack describes how she's recovered 1 year later

Recently retired Koltunyuk would take an hour-long subway ride to Rockaway Beach to go swimming most days.

Dasha Koltunyuk described the harrowing details of her mother’s attack on Aug. 7 in detail.

“She was in the water as she normally was towards the end of the day and she felt something bump into her, hard. And then she saw the shark on its belly up look at her,” said Dasha Koltunyuk. “She described looking at its eyes very vividly and just seeing it. She almost describes it as being mischievous, almost like an adolescent spirit.”

"She saw all of its teeth. She described how green and dirty they were. And then the shark attacked and she remembers a cloud of blood in the water," said Koltunyuk's daughter.

Dasha Koltunyuk said her mother still vividly remembers what the shark looked like and is convinced it was a great white.

According to the Global Shark Attack File, a website that tracks shark and human interactions, the last known shark attack in New York City was in 1958.

The doctor who tended to Koltunyuk’s wounds said it was the biggest bite he had ever seen, according to Dasha Koltunyuk.

“He was just kind of in awe of it, in awe that she survived that,” she said.

"I think the fact that she's alive is a miracle," Dasha Koltunyuk added.

Koltunyuk’s story has always been one of survival, her daughter said. After immigrating from Ukraine in the 1990s, her husband died and she became a single mother. In addition, Koltunyuk couldn't continue her previous job as a marine engineer because of the language barrier, so she was forced to find new ways to provide for her family. Most recently, she worked as a nanny.

“She's a fighter,” said Dasha Koltunyuk. “She's fought for everything in our lives on her own.”

Despite the trauma, her daughter said Koltunyuk feels no ill will toward sharks.

“My mom is in love with nature, with animals. And I do think that she'd want me to tell the public to not hate on sharks but to do everything we can to to be able to swim safely,” she said.

Koltunyuk, who is still in the hospital, has undergone seven surgeries with potentially one more ahead. The family set up a GoFundMe to assist with medical bills in the wake of the attack.

“People’s empathy and compassion is amazing,” said Kallor, “We don’t feel like we’re alone.”

Dasha Koltunyuk said her mother’s wish for the future is to celebrate on the same grounds that caused her pain.

“When she's on her feet, in whatever form that is, one of the first things she wants to do is go back to the beach with a bottle of champagne,” she said.

‘Like a scene out of Jaws’: British boy attacked by sharks in Bahamas

Finley Downer, eight, bitten on both legs by nurse sharks at Compass Cay before being pulled to safety

An eight-year-old British boy has been attacked by sharks while on holiday in the Bahamas .

Finley Downer was surrounded by three nurse sharks while swimming in a lagoon last week, his family said, before he was pulled to safety after suffering bites on both legs.

Finley was then taken to a clinic in the capital, Nassau, where he underwent a three-hour operation, according to PA Media.

Finley’s father, Michael Downer, 44, told the Sun: “It was like a scene out of Jaws,” adding that his son could have been killed.

Michael had taken the family, including Finley and his sisters Lily, nine, and Emily, 12, on a five-island tour when the attack took place at Compass Cay. The family told the paper they joined a crowd of people swimming among nurse sharks in the lagoon.

Describing the scene, his father recalled there was so much blood as his son said to him: “Dad, I don’t want to die.” The family has since returned home to Kettering, Northamptonshire, where Finley is recovering.

Tour guide operator Exuma Escapes told the Sun the family entered a lagoon not used on their tour, without a guide. They described nurse sharks as docile bottom-feeders, “unless handled incorrectly”.

Exuma Escapes has been approached for comment.

Witnesses Describe Horror as Shark Tears Aussie Man Apart During Attack

Authorities in Australia postponed the search for the body of a 55-year-old man on Tuesday, believed to have been mauled by a shark in a known great white hotspot. Witnesses described their horror at seeing the surfer go under during the attack in South Australia, and poor ocean conditions have halted the search process for any remains. Police said witnesses spotted the attack around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday (local time), when “I saw the shark go and just launch and bite,” Ian Brophy told the Advertiser . “Over the top of the guy and bite and drag him down under the water and then nothing for a minute or two and blood everywhere and then up pops the board. That’s all it was, was this guy getting torn apart. I saw him in the wave and the shark had his body in his mouth. It was pretty gruesome. It took every bit of him I think. Sixty years of surfing and I’ve never seen anything like that before in my life.” Another surfer described the shark as a “f**king monster.”

The American tourist who was attacked by a shark in Turks and Caicos was celebrating her graduation from Yale when the predator ripped off her foot — which could not be reattached because it took an emergency flight six hours to arrive.

The 22-year-old from Connecticut, who has not been named, was vacationing after graduation with a friend when she was attacked by what is believed to be a reef shark at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, a local source told the Daily Mail .

Gruesome images published by the outlet show her detached left foot still embedded in her flipper.

The pair were swimming off famous Grace Bay Beach during a private boat tour when the beast attacked her.

The boat captain, who is trained in first aid, dove into the water to save the woman — applying a tourniquet to her mangled leg before she was rushed to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, the Mail reported.

He then jumped back into the water and retrieved her foot, which was still in the flipper.

The detached limb was placed in a bucket of ice to preserve it for reattachment.

However, the foot could not be saved because it took an emergency aircraft six hours to arrive and fly the woman to a hospital in Miami, according to the Mail.

An unidentified employee described her as an “impressive young woman” was had just run a marathon in the Netherlands last week.

“It was a super rare incident. I have been living here for 14 years and there has only been one other incident where there was a shark bite and nothing was ripped off,” he told the outlet. “It’s shocking what happened. I feel heartbroken for her.”

The victim and her friend were on a private boat during an excursion organized by local eco-adventures and water sports company Big Blue Collective.

“The extremely rare and unfortunate incident that happened yesterday outside the reef, involving a snorkeler and a shark, occurred during a private trip,” a company spokesperson said.

“Only two individuals were in the water, which was clear and calm when a presumed Caribbean Reef Shark left one snorkeler with an injury due to what is known in diving circles as a case of mistaken identity,” the rep said.

Grace Bay Beach, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, Overseas Dependency of the United Kingdom.

“The calm, quick and measured response from one of our captains and office team meant that the victim was extracted from the ocean and dispatched in the ambulance in 15 minutes, saving them from a potentially life-threatening situation,” the statement added.

Initial reports based on a statement from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police said the woman had been snorkeling in the waters near the Blue Haven Resort, but the agency later deleted its statement on Facebook.

The woman was listed in stable condition at a Miami hospital, where she was expected to be reunited with her family, according to the Mail.

2nd massive great white shark in 2 days pings off Space Coast as Delta IV Heavy launch awaits

The second king-sized visitor in two days has surfaced in the waters off the Space Coast, coinciding with the eagerly awaited final launch of the Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral.

Scot, a 1,600-pound great white shark , was tracked by the nonprofit research group OCEARCH far off the coast of Palm Bay early Friday.

The massive shark pinged southeast of Palm Bay at 1:23 a.m. A ping means the shark's dorsal fin, to which a satellite tag has been attached, broke the water's surface long enough to transmit location information.

Scot also pinged in the Florida Keys  on Feb. 10 and Feb. 28. The shark's previous Florida trips took him into the Gulf of Mexico near Sarasota in March 2022 and it hung out around the Florida Keys from April through June of 2023.

Early on Thursday morning, a 13-foot 7-inch, 1,701-pound great white shark , named  Mahone , pinged far off Cape Canaveral's coast, just hours before Delta IV Heavy was scheduled to launch . The Thursday launch was eventually delayed by weather and was still on hold Friday morning.

The sharks' locations should be prime viewing areas for the powerful rocket's launch . Depending on cloud cover, visibility is reportedly possible from most of Florida.

Here's what to know about white shark Scot, OCEARCH and sharks in Florida:

More about OCEARCH great white shark Scot

Scot  was tagged by OCEARCH scientists off Nova Scotia near Ironbound Island on September 8, 2021.

At that time, the shark was classified as an adult male, measuring 12-feet 3-inches and weighing 1,644-pounds

Scot was the 74th great white shark tagged by OCEARCH in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

According to OCEARCH , Scot was named by its SeaWorld partners after the people of Nova Scotia, "who have always been so welcoming and committed to the science and health of our oceans."

What is OCEARCH?

OCEARCH is a nonprofit research organization studying the ocean's giants.

The group studies great white sharks and other keystone species essential for the health of the oceans.

OCEARCH is launching its 47th expedition on April 1. It departs from Jacksonville, Florida and is scheduled to make its final docking in Charleston, South Carolina on April 21.

During expeditions, researchers have collected previously unattainable data on the animals' migrations, reproductive cycle, genetic status, diet, abundance, and more.

During the expeditions, researchers collected previously unattainable data on the animals' migrations, reproductive cycle, genetic status, diet, abundance, and more.

"If we lose the apex predator (sharks) then we lose all our fish and then there are no fish sandwiches for our grandchildren," OCEARCH founder Chris Fischer told USA TODAY Network's The  Courier-Journal . "That's oversimplified, of course, but the idea is important because many shark species are threatened by overfishing and a demand for shark fins in Asia. Their dwindling numbers jeopardize ocean habitats."

What is the OCEARCH shark tracker? One shark 'drew' shark portrait

OCEARCH provides an online map tracking the tagged shark's travels.

Each animal has a Smart Position and Temperature Transmitting Tag (SPOT) tag attached to its dorsal fin which emits a ping when it breaks the water's surface for a short time and transmits location information to trackers.

The most notable tracker page belongs to a 13-foot 3-inch white shark nicknamed Breton . The 1,437-pound shark's pings from September 2020 to January 2022 connect to show what appears to be the outline of a colossal shark, with the tail in Nova Scotia, the body spanning the East Coast and the head pointing at Florida's east coast.

How many sharks has OCEARCH tagged?

According to its tracker, OCEARCH has tagged 371 sharks, including 123 great white sharks.

  • 123 great white sharks
  • 144 tiger sharks
  • 9 blacktip sharks
  • 29 shortfin mako sharks
  • 25 blue sharks
  • 18 hammerhead sharks
  • 6 silky sharks
  • 6 bull sharks
  • 8 whale sharks
  • 3 great hammerhead sharks

The group has also tagged alligators, dolphins, seals, swordfish and turtles.

The presence of dolphins means there are no sharks: Fact or myth?

A dolphin's presence does not mean there are no sharks nearby. Both eat the same food items, meaning both can be present.

"If anything, it's the opposite," Stephen Kajiura, a shark expert at Florida Atlantic University, told  Live Science , "If you see dolphins, more often than not, there might be sharks in that same area."

Great white sharks in Florida

Great white  sharks  migrate south when the water gets cold and food sources become scarce up north, according to  OCEARCH chief scientist Dr. Bob Hueter .

Think of them as the snowbirds of sharks.

Most of them tend to stay away from the beaches in continental shelf waters, Hueter said.

Most shark attacks happen in Florida

There were 69 documented unprovoked  shark attacks  around the globe in 2023. The U.S. led the world with 36 attacks and Florida again was the state with the most bites at 16.

Florida shark attacks by county:

  • Volusia County:  8
  • Brevard County : 2
  • St. Lucie County : 2
  • Miami-Dade County: 1
  • Palm Beach County : 1
  • Escambia County : 1
  • Pinellas County: 1

While the U.S. has the most attacks, South Africa has the most shark-related fatalities.

In the past 47 years, there have been  1,230 shark bites  worldwide, according to data from  floridapanhandle.com , with  great white sharks credited as the top biters . No white shark has been identified in a Florida shark bite from 1926 to present, according to Shark Attack File .

How to reduce your risk of a shark attack

While the chances are slim, shark bites and attacks can happen. There are things you can do to reduce the risk:

  • Don't go into the water alone.
  • Don't go too far from shore. Being far away from the shore means it could take too long for emergency assistance to reach you.
  • Avoid swimming at dawn or at dusk. Sharks are most active at those times and the risk of a shark mistaking you for other prey increases when the light is low.
  • Don't go into the water where people are fishing.
  • Be cautious in areas between sandbars and near dropoffs.
  • Don't wear high-contrast clothing. Sharks see contrast very well.
  • Take off shiny jewelry. It can shimmer and look like fish that sharks prey upon.
  • Try not to splash. Sharks may mistake the noise for a struggling fish.
  • Don't go into the water if sharks are known to be present and get out if sharks are seen.
  • If you are bleeding, stay out of the water.

Enormous great white shark pings off Cape Canaveral, in time for Delta IV Heavy launch

On the day United Launch Alliance's massive triple-core Delta IV Heavy was set to launch one final time, a jumbo-sized visitor surfaced off the Cape Canaveral coast, a perfect spot to watch the rocket light up the sky.

A nearly 14-foot, 1,700-pound great white shark , nicknamed Mahone by OCEARCH scientists, pinged in the waters northeast of Cape Canaveral at 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 28. Mahone was joined a day later by Scot, another behemoth white shark at 1,600 pounds. Scot pinged nearby off the Space Coast.

A ping means the Smart Position and Temperature Transmitting Tag (SPOT) tag attached to the shark's dorsal fin broke the water's surface and transmitted location information to trackers.

Mahone previously pinged off the St. Augustine Beach coast on Leap Day. The shark was tagged by OCEARCH researchers in 2020 and has traveled 18,137 miles since but, according to  his tracker , only visited Florida once before, traveling as far south as the Canaveral National Seashore in March 2022.

Here's what to know about white  shark  Mahone, OCEARCH and sharks in Florida:

Mahone was tagged off Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on Oct. 1, 2020.

At the time, he was classified as a mature adult male, measured 13 feet, 7 inches long and weighed 1,701 pounds.

He is the largest shark tagged by OCEARCH in Canadian waters and was named after nearby Mahone Bay.

Great white shark facts

Here are some things to know about white sharks, according to  NOAA Fisheries :

  • White sharks grow slowly. Males mature at around 26 years old and females at around 33 years old. Life expectancy is difficult to determine but is estimated to be between 30 and 70 years.
  • White sharks are about 4 feet long at birth but can grow up to about 20 feet long and weigh over 4,000 pounds.
  • White sharks eat an opportunistic diet of fish, invertebrates and marine mammals.
  • White sharks are partially warm-blooded and can maintain their internal body temperature above that of the surrounding water. This allows them to be more active in cooler waters than cold-blooded species.

Man who filmed harrowing shark attack so clear you could hear scream says he’s still haunted by it

The video shows the terrifying moment the shark turned on the divers.

Jess Battison

Warning: This article contains graphic images and video which some readers may find distressing

Thankfully, shark attacks aren’t exactly a common occurrence for us Brits and hopefully, they're something most of us will never have to experience.

But for those unfortunate enough to find themselves in a situation like that are likely to have it stay with them for the rest of their lives.

And this man who filmed a harrowing shark attack so clear you could hear the screams says he’s still haunted by it.

It was back in 2018 when Dan White came across a whitetip shark.

The bloke was in Egypt to complete his deep diver certification when it swam its way over to its diving group.

And thinking it was a ‘cool encounter’, White decided to start filming it, having came across three of the sharks very recently ‘with no trouble at all’.

But as the horrifying clip on YouTube shows, things took a terrible turn.

Several German drivers who were swimming in the same area joined with White’s group and then the shark’s behaviour began to change.

White told Tracking Sharks: “As I was filming I noticed that one of the outlet diver’s bubbles spooked the shark and it turned to investigate."

In the video, you can see the shark making its way to the diver’s level and swimming towards them.

The animal then begins to attack one of the divers, with the clip showing it biting into its victim’s leg.

Dan retold the scary encounter to the BBC’s Why Sharks Attack : “It bit into the diver's leg, latched on, thrashed around and ended up going over almost like a cartwheel.

“It was crazy, it wouldn't let go for what felt like forever. It ended up tearing his calf muscle completely off his leg.”

The man’s calf was ripped to shreds and the shark had not only completely destroyed his calf muscle, but also bitten down to the bone.

“There was a big plume of blood in the water. Another diver started screaming you could hear her scream - a shriek noise in your ear," Dan said.

"It's horrifying to listen to.”

senior trip shark attack

Despite the group being 10 metres below the surface of the water, you can hear the haunting scream in the video.

After the shark attack, the man was helped up the surface where he was heaved out from the water.

Before being rushed to shore, first responders administered pain medication and applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg, which miraculously didn’t need to be amputated. He was then taken to hospital.

Unsurprisingly, YouTube users were quick to express their shock beneath the video, with one person writing in the comments: “Very scary footage.”

Another added: “Wow, absolutely terrifying,” while a third penned: “The most chilling part of this is still being able to hear the screaming under water.”

Boy, 10, Attacked, Bitten on Shark Tank Trip at Bahamas Resort, Police Say

A 10-year-old boy from Massachusetts was bitten by a shark in the Bahamas on Monday, January 15, police said.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that a boy from the United States was bitten by a shark shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday and was transported to a local hospital. Police said he was bitten in the right leg and was in stable condition, Knewz.com has confirmed.

According to police , the boy was bitten "while participating in an expedition in a Shark Tank at a local resort on Paradise Island."

The Royal Bahamas Police superintendent told NBC News she did not have further information about protections in place at the "Shark Tank" expedition.

Police did not specify the resort, but there are many shark experiences available on Paradise Island, one of almost 300 islands in the Bahamas.

One of the most popular is the Aquaventure Water Park at the Atlantis Paradise Island resort, which features a famous water slide that runs through a shark tank, along with a variety of pools and lagoons filled with marine wildlife.

The park also has a Walking with the Sharks adventure experience in which guests can don a clear glass helmet and walk along the bottom of the Mayan Temple Shark Lagoon "to see Caribbean reef sharks and nurse sharks up close."

Another shark attack took place in the U.S. on December 30, 2023.

As Knewz.com reported , a 39-year-old man who was attacked by a shark in Maui, Hawaii died from the attack, according to authorities.

Maui County wrote on Instagram that the incident took place at approximately 11:19 a.m.

The Maui Police Department identified the victim as Jason Carter, of Ha’ikū, in the social media post .

According to the Maui Police Department, Carter, who was surfing in Maui’s Paia Bay when the attack took place, died at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time after being rushed to the hospital.

Safety Officers transported Carter by Jet Ski to the shore, where life-saving measures were performed by first responder personnel before Carter was hospitalized, according to Maui County officials.

“It was murky, like really murky and I was kind of nervous in the waters because it was too like I couldn’t see my feet,” a bystander told Hawaii News Now . “Then next thing you know the guy, just the shark just came up next to him and there’s maybe one guy in between us, and the shark just started biting him and pull him down and then I just was paddling in trying to call 911.”

According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources , it was the first fatal shark attack in Hawaii in 2023 and the seventh overall.

TrackingSharks.com reports that there were 42 shark attacks in the United States in 2023.
