Climb the 99 Steps

Take this St. Thomas historical site one step at a time. Made of the old ballast from Danish ships, the steps connect waterside and hilltop homes and facilities. They were built in the 1700’s and referred to as “frigangs,” or stair-stepped streets. While the climb is a bit of a workout, the views are great and you can use your imagination to think of all the pirates, towns folks, and royalty that ascended those stairs on their way to Blackbeard’s Castle. The castle is now closed to the public after a recent hurricane, but the free stair climb will let you see the outside up close.

Caribbean Historical Tours, L.L.C. is a tour and excursion company. We are a family-operated business since 1984. We are based in the Caribbean and headquartered in St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua. Historical Tours

Historical Tour I is very comprehensive and includes a two-phase experience of walking and driving. These tours often last for more than two hours and in some cases as long as five hours. Be sure to check the duration of the tour you are interested in. If you love history, but don't want the walking aspect then choose our General Tours or our Historical Tours II.

Historical Tour I

This is a traditional walking historical tour with factual information and easy going walk through the most important historical constructions that remain as well as fantastical stories of triumph, pain, and freedom.

What Is Covered

The fun does not stop after the walks in the parks. Our historical I tours are 2 phased tours that end with a drive. Our services are full service and includes optional beach and shopping time.

This is the most comprehensive historical tour on the island conducted by trained tour guides, who are comprehensible, articulate and well versed in Virgin Islands history.

This tour is full service and offers optional BEACH and SHOPPING TIME with a return to most locales.

Historical Tour II

This is a specialized  tour like our Historical Tour I, but without the walking involved; very convenient. Stops are made to illustrate, recite, entertain and  to take pictures. This experience is a combination of human historical chronology, an introduction to Caribbean culture and that which originated specifically from St. Thomas.

We may pick fruits that are in season for you right on the spot, we always pick flora that were used historically for healing. We discuss the island's statistics and engage you in this authentic cultural historical experience that visits  the past and explain the events that took place in this island of five different colonial settlements. This tour is a true sensory experience living up to our goals satisfying what you Hear, See, Smell, Taste, Touch and Feeling in the Caribbean!!!

It covers local life: statistics, politics, geography, flora and fauna and of course a little African, European, and Danish history. We drive through the island looking at Emancipation Garden, Frenchtown, German headquarters, historical churches, University of the Virgin Islands, Magens Bay, Hull Bay, St. John, Tortola, St. Croix, Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and many cays and islets. We make the history come alive with this interactive tour that also covers the chronology of events that brought the island to the present.

General tours.

The General Tour offers the best value because it is designed to be a composite of several diverse tours and lots of history. We recount history in creative ways. We modulate our voices in theatrical ways so history can live for you. Tales and truths of the aboriginal peoples, piracy, slavery, colonization, and the chronological order of successive European colonies and their notorious leaders are all covered. These tours can be utilized as a field trip for school groups, from middle school to collegiate levels. Informative and educational, this is an excellent tour for families or individuals who love the rich stories of pirates in the Caribbean.

WHAT IS COVERED

You will see the island's vast geographical beauty, smell aromatic medicinal herbs and learn of their uses. We drive to and through different historical sites, and to some of the highest elevations on the islands we serve. Each tour is unique and island-specific. Beach time is sometimes possible on these tours. Ask your tour guide.

Beach Tours are for the beach lovers and they are a great way to see the island and get some important swim time in. It is always possible to shop after you swim at the beach. These tours always start in the morning so that you can have it all in one day. This is a very smart tour to utilize. It could be considered your traditional island tour with nothing covering the history, but instead really cool information about the paths of whales, depths of the ocean, types of fish and coral reefs that are found in the surrounding waters, etc.

HISTORICAL STORIES, TOPOGRAPHY, AND COLONIAL SETTLEMNET. For anyone interested in seeing most of the island, and still focus on monuments, these tours include visits to several beaches in two hours, with another two to five hours on a beautiful beach for swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving (scuba diving is not included in the tour price and is not always available.) If our tour starts at 9:00 a.m. in the morning you could be at the beach swimming by 11:00 a.m., leave the beach at 1:00 p.m. to go shopping, or stay on the beach all day.

St. Thomas Historical Trust Museum

Located between Main Street and the Charlotte Amalie waterfront, this small museum is dedicated to preserving the archeological and cultural past of St. Thomas. Tours are by appointment only and are led by a Historical Trust volunteer. While exhibits can change periodically, this small museum boasts an extensive display of artifacts. Explore rooms featuring West Indian art and antiques from the 1600s, along with treasures found in shipwrecks.

Haagensen House

Nestled in Charlotte Amalie’s historic district, this museum was once the home of a wealthy Danish banker in the 1920s. Today, guests can enjoy a guided tour through the home, which features traditional Caribbean architecture, louvered windows and a stylish balcony with panoramic views of the harbor. As you wander from room to room, you’ll notice a sizable collection of antique art and furniture and the largest collection of life-sized bronze and copper pirate sculptures.

Important Note: Haagensen House is temporarily closed to tours, but you can view the home from the outside.

Pirate’s Treasure Museum

You’ll learn about famous pirates Blackbeard and Captain Kidd at The Pirate’s Treasure Museum in east Charlotte Amalie’s Buccaneer Mall. A fun and interactive museum perfect for families, you’ll discover the history of piracy in the Caribbean and see treasures and artifacts from shipwrecks in the waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands. See cannons and cannonballs, marvel at Roman coins and learn about life on a pirate ship on the high seas during the golden age of piracy.

French Heritage Museum

Once the village fire station and then a clinic, the French Heritage Museum has a long history that dates back to the early 1940s. Located in Frenchtown, the museum is home to exhibits that highlight the island’s architecture, cuisine and culture, as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands maritime history. Throughout the museum, you will find old photos of Frenchtown, West Indian crafts, toys and music, along with antique furniture, fishing nets and tools.

Fort Christian

Fort Christian is a National Historic Landmark near Charlotte Amalie’s Emancipation Garden. An impressive 17 th -century stone fort that once housed the Danish militia, it’s easily recognizable by its gothic style architecture and vibrant red exterior. Visitors can explore the grounds, see the jail quarters and visit the museum, which is home to historic furniture, paintings and West Indian artifacts. Finally, be sure to head to the roof, which offers one of the best views of Charlotte Amalie.

St. Thomas Synagogue

Built in 1833, the stunning St. Thomas Synagogue is the second oldest in the western hemisphere. It’s a beautiful example of Caribbean architecture, and the sand floor, a tradition carried over from the days of the Spanish Inquisition, is a rare feature only found in four other synagogues around the world. Located in Charlotte Amalie’s historic district, the synagogue offers free 15-30 minute tours, and you can also visit The Weibel Memorial Museum in the foyer of the synagogue, which features images, artifacts and plaques detailing Jewish history on St. Thomas.

Caribbean Genealogy Library

The Caribbean Genealogy Library is an absolute necessity for anyone interested in researching their family history. The library is located outside the east end of Charlotte Amalie. It has an extensive collection of books, manuscripts, and other materials related to genealogy, focusing on the Caribbean region. If you happen to have family ties to St. Thomas or are simply interested in the island’s genealogy, the staff can even help you do your own research. Appointments are required to visit, so inquire ten days in advance.

St. Thomas Itinerary, USVI: How To Spend 6 Days in Paradise

Looking for the ideal St. Thomas Itinerary for your trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands?

St. Thomas, USVI, holds a special place in my heart. It was one of my most memorable family vacations, the first place I traveled without my parents and then where I spent my honeymoon.

So, since I’ve had the chance to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands multiple times, I created a complete St. Thomas itinerary to share what’s so special about it!

It holds the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure and is an amazing, underrated spot for a couple’s getaway. Combine that with the ease of getting there from anywhere in the south or along the east coast of the US, and it makes one of the best honeymoon islands near the U.S.

This itinerary will show you the best way to spend a week in St. Thomas, followed by some of my top tips for enjoying this island.

General Tips for Visiting St. Thomas, USVI

• St. Thomas is a US Territory, and they use US currency, so you do not need a passport (though it may be handy if you want to take a day trip to the British Virgin Islands).
• They drive on the opposite side of the road, but the steering wheel is still on the left side of the car (weird, right?).
• I have never felt unsafe in St. Thomas, but I take some precautions. I don’t go into Charlotte Amalie at night, and I’m usually with another person when I leave the resort.
• If you’d like to see more of the USVI, it’s easy to take a ferry to St. John, and you can visit St. Croix by a short plane ride. But I think St. Thomas has enough to fill your USVI itinerary for at least a week!
• If you choose not to rent a car, bring plenty of cash for taxis. There is no ride-share service like Uber or Lyft.

One Week in St. Thomas (6-Day Itinerary)

This St. Thomas guide follows exactly how my husband and I spent our honeymoon in the US Virgin Islands because it honestly could not have been more perfect.

You’ll notice there are only 6 days, and that’s because in this St. Thomas Itinerary, we have not included travel days. You should expect to spend one day on each end of the trip flying to/from the islands.

Day 1 – Day Trip to The British Virgin Islands

Jump into island life full-force and take a British Virgin Islands day trip. Two companies that I have gone with are New Horizons & Breakaway Charters – though it looks like they are no longer running this tour – and Stormy Pirates . I would highly recommend either company.

You must bring your passport if you want to go on this excursion. This is one of the best tours in St. Thomas though, so I can’t recommend it enough.

Before you leave the marina in Red Hook, stop by Lattes in Paradise and grab a breakfast sandwich and morning brew. I loved it so much that we went back again for breakfast later in the week.

As soon as you get on the boat, the captain or first mate will go over safety precautions and then offer you a drink. One captain told us drinking before noon doesn’t make you an alcoholic, it makes you a pirate (lol).

The first stop on the trip is Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda. Here, you’ll find beautiful views on a hike down to the beach, with incredible rock formations surrounding you on your way down.

Once you make it to the beach, there’s a little bar, and you get to spend about half an hour here enjoying the view and wading in the ocean among the towering boulders.

A taxi will take you back to your boat, and then depending on what trip you take, you could either be headed to Pusser’s for lunch or to White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. If you go to Pusser’s, you’ll also get to snorkel for a bit after lunch then head to White Bay.

White Bay is known for the Soggy Dollar Bar, which is named because your dollars may literally be soggy when you leave!

There are no docks at the bay, so the boats anchor near the beach, and you have to swim to land. Most captains will hand around a dry bag, so you don’t have to jump in with your wallet in your pocket.

On the way back to Red Hook, you do have to stop at Cruz Bay in St. John to go through Customs. It’s a very simple process.

We were so tired once we got back that we went to our room and crashed. If you feel like going out though, head to one of the best restaurants in Red Hook , Island Time Pub, for a lively atmosphere, a beautiful view, and great food.

Day 2 – Relax at the Beaches and See Marine Life

Today is much more relaxing and laid back.

First, head to Coral World Ocean Park – one of the most popular St. Thomas attractions . On the way there, grab a smoothie for breakfast from Martha’s Smoothies at Coki Beach (right next to Coral World).

Coral World is perfect for any animal lover. It’s like a small zoo or aquarium; the main attraction (in my opinion) is an underwater observatory where you can watch animals swim in the open channel.

Something I enjoyed that I wasn’t expecting was the presentations with the animals made by the staff. We saw a show with a sea lion, a sea turtle feeding, and an interactive presentation at the touch pool. If you can’t tell, I’m very much a kid at heart.

After you’ve had your fill of animal education, you can head right next door to Coki Beach. It is a 2-minute walk (if that), and you’ll pass a stand selling snorkels and flippers. They rent for a reasonable price (around $10).

You can also rent chairs on the beach to place your things, and waiters will come around and take your drink order from the beach bars. Though it may not look like much, be sure to order fish from the place with a wooden bar where you can sit. If you like seafood, you won’t be disappointed.

While you are snorkeling, be sure to keep your chairs in view. I’ve never had anything stolen, but you never know.

After a relaxing afternoon at one of my favorite beaches in St. Thomas , go back and get ready for a night out in Red Hook.

For apps and drinks, head to Duffy’s Love Shack , which is a must for the atmosphere alone. It’s a tiki bar in the middle of a parking lot. They offer endless creative drinks and bar food if you’re hungry.

Once you’re ready for dinner, you can walk down to Tap & Still for the best chicken sandwich on the island. Their burgers are pretty good, too. Their fries are served in brown paper bags where you can see the grease stains from all that fried deliciousness.

Day 3 – Day Trip to St. John

Set out on another adventure to a different island, staying within the US Virgin Islands. Take the ferry from St. Thomas to St. John, which is about a 30-minute ferry ride if you leave out of Red Hook and one of the best St. Thomas day trips .

Leave early in the morning and grab breakfast at North Shore Deli in Mongoose Junction. If you have a small soft-shell cooler that fits in a backpack, I highly recommend some of their grab-and-go foods for a picnic lunch on the beach.

After you’ve fueled up for the day, catch a taxi out of Cruz Bay and head to the Cinnamon Bay Trailhead in the Virgin Islands National Park – one of the most beautiful National Parks on the East Coast.

The trail begins on Centerline Road and winds down to some sugar plantation ruins and, ultimately the most beautiful beach you have ever seen.

Note: The trail is about 1.8 miles long and rated moderate-strenuous. I wore my Chaco sandals and was so glad I did. They are one of my favorite gifts for outdoorsy women! Also, make a great gift idea for hikers .

When I first visited, all of the amenities at Cinnamon Bay had been removed in the hurricanes. But now it seems like all of the Cinnamon Bay amenities have been rebuilt and look absolutely amazing.

Food trucks occasionally set up near the beach and there is a cafe at the campground. This does mean there may be more crowds, though.

You can also grab a quick taxi to Trunk Bay, where there are more food trucks and even a snorkel trail through the national park!

Be sure to rent snorkels for the afternoon.

Once you’ve had enough of lounging on the beach, head back to Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay for some shopping and dinner.

If you get back a little early, I recommend stopping by The Tap Room by St. John Brewers for some snacks and cold beer.

Then, for dinner, walk back towards the ferry dock to Cruz Bay Landing , where you may even get some live music. Tyler and I loved just chilling on the patio and people-watching!

You can check the ferry schedule here . Be sure to catch the last boat out, or you’ll have to stay the night on St. John.

If you have the opportunity to spend a week in the USVI, you should definitely take one day in St. Thomas to visit another US Virgin Islands, and St. John is a fantastic choice!

Day 4 – Local Cuisine and Sunset Cruises

Assuming you stay at one of the USVI’s amazing resorts (I’ll talk about my favorites in a minute), you should spend the morning by the pool, taking the warm weather and island views.

We chose to take a food tour for lunch with St. Thomas Food Tours . The Historic Downtown Tour gives you an interesting overview of the history of St. Thomas and Charlotte Amalie.

You also get to see some interesting sights off the beaten path, like a mural in the post office and the Taphus – a brewery behind the Billabong store.

Of course, the main attraction of this St. Thomas food tour is the local cuisine you’ll try. Callaloo, conch fritters, and fungi are just a few dishes that we sampled. You’ll also get a good idea of some restaurants to come back to if you’d like.

After the food tour, you can explore and shop in downtown Charlotte Amalie. Some of the best shopping can be found along Dronningens Gade, or if you’re looking for something more high end you should have a look at Havensight Mall.

Finish the day off just as relaxing as the morning with a sunset cruise. One is offered out of Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove on the VI Cat , and New Horizons & Breakaway Charters offers a cruise out of Red Hook.

Sunset cruises are one of my favorite types of boat tours in St. Thomas . They are magical!

Bottomless painkillers (a local cocktail) are served on the cruise, as well as hors d’oeuvres. You’ll also have incredible views of the island as the sun gradually makes its way down. Sunset sails are very popular for a St. Thomas vacation!

If you didn’t fill up with snacks on board, then head to Amalia Café for dinner after you dock. You can sit out on the patio and enjoy a nice drink with delicious Spanish tapas.

Day 5 – Mangrove Lagoon (Kayaking, Hiking, and Snorkeling)

You’ll be glad you took yesterday to relax because today is another adventure, and this one will surely tire you out!

Virgin Island Ecotours offers a full-day Kayak, Hike, and snorkel Adventure at Mangrove Lagoon if you’re up for it. I do recommend only taking this trip if you are in semi-decent shape but it’s one of the best snorkeling tours in St. Thomas .

Kayaking is what can get difficult, especially when you are coming back at the end of the day.

Tyler and I decided to do individual kayaks, but it’s probably so much easier if you’re in a tandem kayak. They also offer shorter tours if you don’t feel like you are up for the full five hours.

This was one of my absolute favorite days of the trip, and that’s saying a lot. Kayaking through Stingray Alley and between the little islands with mangrove trees all around is breathtaking.

You won’t find a better location for kayaking in St. Thomas . We also got to stop and take a hike to some tidal pools that were full of marine life.

Our guide, D’Haden, was fantastic and knowledgeable about the plants and animals we encountered.

He led us to Cas Cay next, where we had a packed lunch of sandwiches and watched a hermit crab race. The hermit crabs were a little unnerving as there were so many, and they were EVERYWHERE.

After a short hike on Cas Cay, it was finally time to snorkel. I’ve been lucky enough to snorkel at many places around the world, but this was by far my favorite. There were schools of colorful fish, lobster, octopus, and we even saw a stingray and barracuda!

It truly was an adventure to remember. A must on any Virgin Islands itinerary!

Once we made it back to the room, we did have to take a nap before going out that night. Even then, we were still pretty tired!

We do love going out to one fancy restaurant each time we go on vacation to St. Thomas, and this time we chose the Old Stone Farmhouse . The name perfectly describes the complex, as it’s a stone building from an old sugar plantation.

The food, presentation, and service are all incredible, and if they still have it on the menu, I highly recommend the bread sampler appetizer and Key Lime Pie dessert.

Start the day with breakfast at Margaritaville. They have huge omelets that any savory breakfast lover will enjoy, or for those that prefer sweet, the French Toast will hit the spot.

Once breakfast is over, make your way out to Magen’s Bay, but try to get there a little early since it gets super crowded. in the afternoon. This is the most popular beach on the island, but in all honestly, it wasn’t our favorite.

It costs $5 to get into the beach, and while they do have a nice bar and space to rent chairs/umbrellas, it was SO crowded. We got there late morning and snagged one of the last shady places at the bar to sit and people-watch for a while.

Book an afternoon fishing excursion with Ocean Surfari or Double Header Sportfishing . Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time out on the water, the captains will ensure you have a great time.

While you aren’t guaranteed to catch fish, most people don’t go home without a little bit of excitement at least.

The first time I went fishing in St. Thomas, my dad caught a Blue Marlin, and the last time I caught a beautiful African Pompano!!!

Not only is it a great trip if you love to fish, but the scenery is unmatched, too. Depending on the time of the excursion, you might even get a second sunset cruise!

Once you make it back, head out to the Caribbean Fish Market for the last meal on the island.

Where to stay in st. thomas (best resorts).

If you’re traveling with family, then Mango Tree Travel recommends staying at Secret Harbour . They love staying here for the spacious rooms, great location, and calm beach.

There are a few resorts that I’ve personally stayed at and really enjoyed in St. Thomas. Whether you can budget a full week or just 3 days in St. Thomas, here are the best places to book a room!

Wyndham Margaritaville St. Thomas

Wyndham Margaritaville St. Thomas certainly did not disappoint with this property. My parents are Wyndham Timeshare owners, so we have been to many of the resorts in the southeast, and I do believe this one tops them all in my experience.

The fun Caribbean atmosphere, friendly staff, and amenities truly set it apart. The Margaritaville Restaurant on-site should not be missed, and there is a reasonable convenience store with a deli in case you forget anything from home or need a quick bite.

The two pools and a private beach offer many places to relax. My favorite is the hillside pool with a swim-up bar. Each room has its own margarita machine, so buy the supplies and have an afternoon of bottomless margs from your own balcony.

If you keep debating where to stay in St. Thomas , this one gets my vote.

Located on the beautiful Sapphire Beach, equipped with a water sports center, Sapphire Beach Resort has it all. The beach is a destination in itself, while the gorgeous pool is for guests only.

The adjacent marina offers almost any excursion you can think of, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for there, book one out of Red Hook that’s less than a mile away. Red Hook also offers shopping and many dining options.

This charming resort will make you wonder if you’re in a quaint Italian seaside village instead of the Caribbean. The Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove Resort is conveniently located near Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas.

The poolside restaurant has a gorgeous ocean view, and chairs are available on the beach for lounging. Frenchman’s Cove also has a small marina where sunset cruises set sail. Check with the concierge for other offerings.

When To Visit St. Thomas, USVI

The peak season for travel in St. Thomas is December to March, when the weather is absolutely perfect for all of us sun-lovers. 70s-80s with a mild breeze. April to June shoulder season is my favorite time to visit, as you should still have great weather with fewer crowds.

Hurricane season is from June to September and can last into October. The last few seasons have not been good for the islands. Planning a trip during these times could be a gamble. But hey, we’re in the middle of a Pandemic right now, crazy things happen all the time.

How much are flights to st. thomas.

This varies, of course, but you can find deals on the East Coast that are in the $200s. It can get up in the $1,000s, though. If you are wondering how to find the best flight deals , I use Google Flights for all my flight searches.

When is the best time to visit St. Thomas?

The best time is shoulder season in April – June. The most popular time with the best weather is December – March.

Is St. Thomas safe?

I’ve been four times and never felt unsafe. However, I always travel with another person and am never outside of the resort or in downtown Red Hook after dark. I always try to take precautions just as I would anywhere else.

It is very easy to get around using taxis, and I even prefer that over renting a car on the island. The driving style there is much different than here in the US, and I would not be comfortable driving myself around.

Final Thoughts: One Week in St. Thomas Itinerary

St. Thomas is one of the most special places in the Caribbean to me. Even after visiting multiple times, I can’t wait to go back.

There are just so many things to do that your St. Thomas itinerary will never feel repetitive or bland, especially if you base it on the outline I just provided. Make sure to budget for a few excursions, too, since this is the best part of staying in St. Thomas!

As someone who loves trying new things, my favorite part of this itinerary is the day we spent kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling in St. Thomas .

I’m all about the beach, but haven’t made it here yet. Everything looks and sounds like a perfect getaway.

St. Thomas really is my perfect vacation destination. Next time I might stay on St. John but I just love the area. Plus it’s a cheaper alternative to many island destinations and easy to get to from the US!

Something that should definitely be on the list is Pizza Pi: the boat pizzeria! It’s so good.

Generally, the ships of Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Royal Caribbean (except Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas) dock at Havensight. Walking Tours in St. Thomas, USVI

Charlotte Amalie

Start:           King’s Wharf.

Finish:          Waterfront.

Time:           2[bf]1/2 hours.

Best Time:           Before 10am to avoid cruise-ship passengers.

Worst Time:          Around midday to 4pm, when traffic and pedestrians are at their most plentiful.

Even with the crowds and shops, it is easy to see how the natural colors and charm of the Caribbean come to life in the waterfront town of Charlotte Amalie. The capital of St. Thomas once attracted seafarers from all over the globe. At one time, St. Thomas was the biggest slave market in the world. Today, the old warehouses, once used for storing stolen pirate goods, have been converted to shops. In fact, the main streets, called “gade” (a reflection of their Danish heritage), now coalesce into a virtual shopping mall, one that is often packed with cruise-ship hordes. Sandwiched among these shops are a few historic buildings, most of which can be seen on foot in about 2 hours. Start your walking tour along the eastern harborfront at King’s Wharf.

1  King’s Wharf

This is the site of the Virgin Islands Legislature. The apple-green two-story structure was first built in 1824 as a military barracks for the Danish Police. The current building dates from 1874. It was in a ceremony on this site in 1917 that ownership of the Virgin Islands was officially transferred from the Danish West Indies to the U.S.—bought for a then-pretty price of $25 million.

From here, walk away from the harbor up Fort Pladsen to:

2  Fort Christian

Dating from 1680 and named after the Danish king Christian V, this handsome (if crumbling) salmon-red structure is the oldest standing building in the entire U.S. Virgin Islands. It has been a fort (with 3- to 6-ft.-thick walls), a governor’s residence, a prison (with a downstairs dungeon), a police station, and a court until it was named a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Unfortunately, restoration efforts of both the fort and its museum have dragged on since 2005, when it was closed to the public for renovations.

Continue walking up Fort Pladsen to:

3  Emancipation Park

This is where a proclamation freeing African slaves and indentured European servants was read on July 3, 1848. The park is now mostly a picnic area for local workers and visitors.

Near the park is the:

4  Grand Galleria

From here, a visitor center dispenses valuable travel information about the island. When it opened as a hotel in 1837, it was a grand address, but it later fell into decay, and finally closed in 1975. The former guest rooms upstairs have been turned into offices and a restaurant.

Northwest of the park, at Main Street and Tolbod Gade, stands the:

5  Central Post Office

On display here are floor-to-ceiling murals by Stephen Dohanos, who became famous as an artist for “The Saturday Evening Post.”

From the post office, walk east along Norre Gade to the:

6  Frederik Lutheran Church

This, the island’s oldest church building, was built between 1780 and 1793. The original Georgian-style building, financed by a free black parishioner, Jean Reeneaus, was refurbished in 1826 and again in 1870 with Gothic and gabled flourishes. It has a “welcoming arms” entrance stairway, and is recognizable by its distinctive yellow-gold hue.

Exiting the church, walk east along Norre Gade to Lille Taarne Gade. Turn left (north) and climb to Kongens Gade (King St.), passing through a neighborhood of law firms, to:

7  Government House

This handsome neoclassical building is the administrative headquarters for the U.S. Virgin Islands. It’s been the center of political life in the islands since it was built, around the time of the American Civil War, in 1867, for the Danish Colonial Council. The first two floors are open to the public and contain vintage West Indian furniture and works of art by native son (and vaunted Impressionist) Camille Pisarro.

After leaving Government House, turn immediately to your left and look for the sign for:

8  Seven Arches Museum

Browsers and gapers love checking out this museum at Government Hill (tel 340/774-9295; http://sevenarchesmuseum.com), the private home of longtime residents Philibert Fluck and Barbara Demaras. This 2-centuries-old Danish house has been completely restored and furnished with antiques. Walk through the yellow ballast arches into the Great Room, which has a wonderful view of the Caribbean’s busiest harbor. It’s open by appointment only.

After visiting the museum, return to Government House. Next to the building is:

9  Frederik Church Parsonage

This building dates from 1725. It’s one of the oldest houses on the island, and the only structure in the Government Hill district to retain its simple 18th-century lines.

Continue west along Kongens Gade until you reach:

10  Hotel 1829

Formerly known as the Lavalette House (and now known officially as Blackbeard’s Castle), this place was designed in 1829 by one of the leading merchants of Charlotte Amalie. This landmark building has views over Charlotte Amalie and the harbor.

This is also a great place to take a break. If the bar is open, Hotel 1829 provides the perfect veranda, with a spectacular view, for a midday drink or a sundowner. You may just fall in love with the place, abandon this tour, and stick around for dinner. The bar is open Monday to Saturday 4 to 11pm.

Next door (still on the same side of the street), observe the:

11  Yellow-Brick Building

This structure was built in 1854 in what local architects called “the style of Copenhagen”—it’s square and squat, with colorful wooden shutters and a roof tiled of marble. It was built of ballast brick (brought over as ballast in the ship). You can go inside and browse the many shops within.

At this point, you might want to double back slightly on Kongens Gade to climb the famous:

12  99 Steps

These steps (actually 103 in total) were erected in the early 1700s, and take you to the summit of Government Hill, from where you’ll see the 18th-century:

13  Crown House

This stately private house is immediately to your right, on the south side of the street. This was the home of von Scholten, the Danish ruler who issued the famous proclamation of emancipation in 1848.

Walk back down the steps and continue right (west) along Kongens Gade, then down a pair of old brick steps until you reach Garden Street. Go right (north) on Garden Street and take a left onto Crystal Gade. On your left, at the corner of Nye Gade and Crystal Gade, you’ll see:

14  St. Thomas Reformed Church

This building is from 1844, but it holds one of the oldest congregations in the Virgin Islands, established by Dutch traders around 1660. The church has been buffeted by fire and natural disasters: Fire destroyed two early-19th-century iterations (and a 1995 hurricane, Marilyn, damaged the sanctuary), but much of the 1844 structure, designed like a Greek temple, has been beautifully restored.

Continue up Crystal Gade. On your right (north side), you’ll come to:

15  St. Thomas Synagogue

This is the oldest synagogue in continuous use under the American flag, and the second oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Nine Sephardic Jewish families founded the congregation in 1796, and the current building was erected in 1833. It still maintains the tradition of having sand on the floor, said to have muffled the sounds of worshippers’ footsteps during the persecution of Jews during the Spanish Inquisition (many communities of Sephardic Jews flourished in the Caribbean after being expulsed from Spain in 1492). The structure is made of local stone, ballast brick from Denmark, and mortar made of molasses and sand. It’s open to visitors Monday to Thursday 9am to 4pm, Friday 9am to 3pm and Saturday during services. Next door, the Weibel Museum showcases 300 years of Jewish history. It keeps the same hours.

Retrace your steps (east) to Raadets Gade and turn south toward the water, crossing the famous Vimmelskaft Gade or "Back Street" (it can get a bit seedy at night, so be aware if you are walking after dark). Continue along Raadets Gade until you reach:

16  Main Street

This is Charlotte Amalie’s major artery and most famous shopping street. Turn right (west) and walk along Main Street until you come to the mid-19th-century:

17  Camille Pissarro Building

This structure will be on your right, at the Amsterdam Sauer Jewelry Store. Pissarro, a Spanish Jew who became one of the founders of French Impressionism, was born in this building as Jacob Pizarro in 1830. Before moving to Paris, he worked for his father in a store on Main Street. Also housed in the building is Gallery Camille Pissarro, with a few Pissarro paintings on display and prints by local artists for sale.

Continuing west along Main Street, you will pass on your right the:

18  Enid M. Baa Public Library

This building, formerly the von Bretton House, dates from 1818.

Keep heading west until you reach:

19  Market Square

This was the center of a large slave-trading market before the 1848 emancipation and is officially called Rothschild Francis Square. Today it’s an open-air fruit and vegetable market, selling, among other items, genips (grape-type fruit; to eat one, break open the skin and suck the pulp off the pit). The wrought-iron roof covered a railway station at the turn of the 20th century. The market is open Monday to Saturday, but Saturday is its busiest day; hours vary, but generally 9am to 3pm.

If the genip doesn’t satisfy you, take Strand Gade down (south) to:

20  The Waterfront

Also known as Kyst Vejen, this is where you can purchase a fresh coconut. One of the vendors here will whack off the top with a machete so that you can drink the sweet milk from its hull. You’ll have an up-close view of one of the most scenic harbors in the West Indies, even when it’s filled with cruise ships.

I knew that a tour that combined food AND my favorite Caribbean island couldn't disappoint me. But this experience far exceeded my expectations. I'm not big on history, so I originally thought that the time between the food stops wouldn't interest me. The tour guide delivered the information in such a casual, interesting way that I never felt bored. I actually enjoyed learning about the island's rich history just as much as I loved eating and drinking my way through the tour! My favorite stop: E's Garden Tea House. We'll definitely be back.

Gerard Sperry

Gerard has lived on St. Thomas for more than a decade. Prior to making St. Thomas his home, he was a regular visitor chartering sailboats for weeks at a time to escape Boston winters, where he made a career of radio management, publishing and marketing. Here in paradise, he has helped with the launch of National Public Radio, volunteers as photographer for the St. Thomas Humane Society, and enjoys cooking and sailing around the islands.

Orignally from The Bronx, New York City, Jennie has been a full-time resident of St. Thomas for 17 years. Prior to becoming a food tour guide, she has worked as a writer and editor, an officer for a small business cooperative in Southern Afghanistan, a swim and sportswear maker, and a fitness trainer.  Jennie brings her innate curiosity about her fellow humans to each tour, and thoroughly enjoys the chance to share stories about her beloved island community and culture.

St. Pete Museum of History Offering New, Historic Boat & Trolley Tours

The St. Petersburg Museum of History has partnered with Tampa Bay Watch to offer the city's only historic boat tour. They've also partnered with Star Trolley to offer a variety of historic trolley tours in and around St. Pete.

The museum has also opened a new exhibit - "Pathway to Eternity." It focuses on the life, death, and afterlife of ancient Egypt. The exhibit includes a 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummified woman and sarcophagus.
