Phi Phi Maya Bay has been a “must see location” for the majority of Thailand tourists for decades and as such, suffered from its overuse. Thankfully the National Park prohibited from 2018 to the end of 2021, any boat from dropping anchor in the bay and alighting at the beach, to allow the gorgeous coral island treasures, wildlife and environment time to recover. Fully recovered, Maya Bay is now open for business once more and keen to show off its beauty to a whole new audience.

Our next port of call on our sunrise tour is the gorgeous Pileh Lagoon (tide-dependent). Another highly popular tourist destination and usually busy but don’t despair. Thanks to our early start time, while most crowds are headed to Maya Bay we are exiting on our way to beat the crowds to Pileh Lagoon.

It is a wonderful attraction, an emerald green lagoon surrounded by high limestone cliffs on 3 sides, and one of the world’s most gorgeous natural swimming pools. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the extremely spectacular view of the emerald waters of the islands merging with the caves and the blue clear horizon as the speedboat coasts into the Lagoon.

Experience Phi Phi's underwater world - Phi Phi Island Snorkeling Stop

It is now time to explore the magical underwater world of Phi Phi Islands with some swimming and snorkeling during our speed boat tour. Our experienced staff will anchor up in an area where marine life waits to greet you.

We supply all your snorkeling equipment including fins and flotation aids such as life jackets and swim noodles. The staff are always there (in and out of the speedboat) ready to help any first-timers with encouragement, and advice when needed.

Our Last Stop on the Phi Phi Leh leg of the tour is to the mysterious Viking Cave. This limestone cave is one of the most notable sites on the island and is one of the most requested tourist attractions from visitors.

The Viking Cave possesses unique drawings on the Southern and Eastern walls, and this naturally formed seaside cave appears out of place (for all the right reasons) at the foot of a limestone cliff. Guests will also be able to observe swifts’ nests in their hundreds. While the site is spectacular and is sure to amaze, please be aware that we are unable to walk into the cave due to local regulations.

While on this stop we will also take the time to stop by one of the local beaches for a viewing of the monkey troops. For our own safety, the team insists we all stay on the boat whilst viewing these cute Long-tailed Macaques. For animal lovers, this is one of the most memorable moments that takes place during the tour.

Islands and Crystal Waters - 2nd Phi Phi Island Snorkeling Stop

It’s time to head on to make our second snorkeling stop. This time we’ll try to find a spot that offers different marine life to what was previously seen. You can choose to say hello to the curious fish again with your second snorkeling adventure, take an extended swim or simply relax on the boat and enjoy the sunshine. We are flexible with our speedboat tour itinerary to ensure that our Phuket customers have the best day possible.

It is at this stage of the day that our guests are starting to get very excited about all that they’ve seen and all that is still to come. Phi Phi Islands Sunrise Tour & Why You Should Do It

Let me start by saying that Maya Bay was the whole reason I fell in love with Thailand, so a Phi Phi Islands day trip was a must do. I am not ashamed to admit that watching Leonardo DiCaprio go absolutely batshit crazy on an island in “The Beach” was the reason I found out how beautiful Thailand is. And because of that movie I learned about Maya Bay as it inspired the actual beach from the film. So, after booking my trip to Thailand, I knew I had to visit this amazing bay and the islands it’s found within. But what I didn’t know was just how much I was going to love the sunrise tour to the Phi Phi Islands, and how much I would rave about it forever.

Phi Phi Islands Sunrise Tour Overview

There are many tours to choose from and all of them will be a SUPER early start time, and though that will be temporary pain the unforgettable memories you’ll make experiencing this magical place far outweigh some sleepiness.

Early Pickup

Pay attention to what tour you book and make sure they provide pickup for your sunrise tour of the Phi Phi Islands. You want to make sure you aren’t having to get a ride at 4am, so double check before you book.

Since we were staying on Phuket, it was pretty easy to find a tour that included hotel pickup.

Still need somewhere to stay and looking at Phuket for a portion of your Thailand trip? There are tons of amazing hotel options! We stayed at the Thavorn Beach Village Resort and Spa , which was incredible and I do highly recommend.

Sunrise Ride to the Phi Phi Islands

For our day at the Phi Phi Islands (Koh Phi Phi), the day began at 4:30am. We were so excited that it wasn’t hard at all to wake up, but we also took it easy the day before and saved ourselves from a hangover. Let me just say, our day was incredible. The boat was covered (thank goodness, because we were sunburnt) and we watched the sun rise behind the scattered islands on the ~45 minute trip out to Maya Bay, which was stop 1.

On this ride, I truly felt like a child. My husband and I are from the midwest in the USA so you just don’t see this kind of beauty every day (don’t get mad, St. Louis Arch, you’re still pretty too). I’m decently well traveled, and this scenery and beauty, I have truly just never seen. I was stunned and I can’t believe I was lucky enough to view it.

Our first stop of the day was Maya Bay, where we explored the beach area and wandered around to see the famous Cupcake Island.

Important note: I visited Maya Bay before it closed for years for a restoration project, and was able to enter the water far more than you can today.

Pi Leh Lagoon

From there, we hopped back on the boat and headed to Pi Leh Lagoon.

Pi Leh Lagoon shocked me. The water was SO teal, and it was this beautiful, secluded area. This may have ended up being the most beautiful bit of Thailand we saw in general. But we dropped anchor for a bit, and jumped off the boat to swim in the perfect teal waters. Seriously, I won’t get over the teal waters and you cannot make me.

Next stop was to snorkel. We got to spend a good amount of time here, and it was a really, really great snorkel spot. Our guides had lots of food to bring the fish around, and they took their underwater camera into the area to snag lots of amazing photos.

After snorkeling for a good amount of time, we enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Monkey Beach

From there, we swung by Monkey Beach where our captain threw bananas at monkeys. They were hilarious, and mean. I mean, they’re wild monkeys. They didn’t want us there at all but let us watch them from the safety of the boat because we had bananas. They also did a wicked doggy paddle and I, for one, was impressed.

I have seen some people get out their boats and get in the water, but our tour guides said this was a bad idea and didn’t let us. Based on how angry the monkeys appeared in general, I’d say this was the safest bet.

Bamboo Island

Next, we went and hung out on Bamboo Island (Koh Phi Phi Don), enjoying beach time and relaxation after a busy day. We had free time to do as we wished, which was delightful after the somewhat strict day so far.

Pro Tips for Sunrise Tour of the Phi Phi Islands

• Do yourself a favor and get up the extra 2 hours early and do the sunrise tour. We were able to beat a lot of boat traffic and sort of go the opposite direction of most tours by doing the sunrise tour. Our guides were phenomenal, and the tour was extremely well organized.
• As a reminder, you can’t actually go that far into the water in Maya Bay anymore due to the country’s rehabilitation efforts. Don’t push your luck, and make sure to follow the rules there.
• Pay attention on the trip out to the islands. You’re tired, I get it, but there’s nothing quite like watching a pink sunrise behind all of these incredible islands sprinkled throughout the Andaman Sea.
• This seems obvious, but please for the love of whatever god, spirit, or otherwise thing you believe in, get some WATERPROOF sunscreen. We got burned (literally) by the first sunscreen we bought because it wasn’t waterproof. Why sunscreen that isn’t waterproof even exists is beyond me, but it does and just please double check yours.
• Befriend your tour guide. He paid extra attention to us – which came very in handy for photos – because we were super nice to him all day.
• Buy the photos. Unless you’re really in a pinch, it’ll be nice to have them all. They know things to pay attention to that a tourist just won’t.
• Eat all the food. Seriously Thai food is amazing and I miss it so much.

The famous Sunrise Tour to Phi Phi Islands. Experience the now a day Luxury of No Crowds visiting the best Phi Phi Island locations.

Maya Bay. Normally, this is our first stop on the famous Sunrise Tour to Phi Phi Islands (depending on the tide), Maya Bay was made famous by the film “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio in 2000. This is a must see for most tourists, so it does get very busy, however we usually arrive before everyone else so you can enjoy the lonely bay for a while, and take a few photographs without the crowds.

Pileh Lagoon. Our next stop is Pileh Lagoon. It is a spectacular emerald green lagoon surrounded by high limestone cliffs, one of the world most gorgeous natural swimming pools. This location has become famous for our traditional jump off the front of the boat. If you feel less adventurous, you can simply use the steps at the side of the boat and enjoy the beautiful waters.

Morning Snorkeling. We have the following locations to choose from, Viking Cove, Loh Somah Bay, Dragon Lagoon, Straight Rock or Par Dang. The location that we choose will depend on the sea conditions, tide and other tour groups on the day. We will supply all of your snorkeling equipment including flippers (fins), and floatation aids such as life jackets or swim noodles. The staff are always there (in and out of the water), ready to help any first timer with encouragement, advice and ready for any emergency.

Monkey Beach. Time to catch up with the locals on Monkey Beach. Everyone loves the monkeys, but we will take the appropriate cautions. They can, and do bite, so we ask everyone to be aware and listen to the tour guides instructions. We need to respect that they are wild animals. If we all behave in a safe, appropriate manner, then we will never have a problem! Please remember to avoid feeding the monkeys, as you will be fined if caught by the authorities.

Bamboo Island and Lunch. For your lunch break we are going to bring you to the most beautiful island of the Phi Phi Islands Group: Bamboo Island. We will have a buffet lunch direct on the white powdery beach of the island.

Afternoon Snorkeling. After lunch, it’s time to say hello to the fishes again, with another snorkeling stop. Options include Nui Bay (Camel Rock), Mosquito Island, Hin Klan or in front of Bamboo Island. All these places have coral reefs with an abundance of sea life.

Return Transfer Approximately 03:30 PM. Remember 10,000 visitors flock to Phi Phi every day in the high season.  That’s a lot of people to share these small islands with. Be warned… it is an early start…but it is well worth it! We aim to leave the marina at 6/6.30am  and be back by 3.00pm.

To give you the very best day we can, our tour is very flexible. We will juggle the tide, weather, customer ability, and the crowds to give you the best day possible. This may mean the omission of some locations, but never at the expense of your enjoyment! Other companies may promise you the world, but we want to enjoy the places we visit.

This trip is the early start for Phi Phi Sightseeing called the “sunrise Phi Phi trip” departing from Phuket using premier speedboats to visit the famous Phi Phi Islands.

The purpose of the earlier start ensures that you miss the crowds that take the 8 am Departures to Phi Phi who tend to arrive between 9:30 – 10:30 am.

Whilst the sunrise trip may seem to be similar in its schedule to other speedboat trips to Phi Phi, it’s not the same. An earlier start means you arrive when there are fewer tourists visiting the beach.

Phi Phi islands can get very busy so an earlier start at 5 am ensures that you are seeing its best with fewer tourists

It’s worth noting that it is not possible to book this trip the night before the day you wish to Travel to Phi Phi as this Trip sells out well in advance.

The Islands came to worldwide fame when Koh “Phi Phi Leh” was used as the main location for the 2000 British movie “The Beach -Maya Bay ” featuring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Our morning tour is a half day trip on the traditional long tail boat called  Ruea Hang Yao , which fisherman around Thailand has been using for centuries.

We visit the most popular locations around Phi Phi Lay island and stop in each place for swimming or snorkeling.

We start the trip with  sunrise views around Phi Phi Lay Island , near Viking Cave . Afterwards we head to Maya Beach to avoid the tourist crowds. You can enjoy the beach, walk through the national park and take some beautiful photos on the beach and relax.   We continue the trip with  Phi Lay Lagoon,  and you can enjoy some swimming in the azure water and stunning views of the limestone cliffs. We also stop for snorkeling and the trip finishes with the last stop at  Monkey Beach , where you have the chance to see wild macaque monkeys. 

During the high season we are full every day, please make your reservation ahead to avoid disappointment. 

Phi Lay Lagoon and Maya bay are part of the national marine park, please don’t forget to bring 400THB per person, the fee is NOT included in the price of the tour.

Your SAFETY is our main priority, and if waves are too big there might be a change of program. From May to November there is an official monsoon season in the south of Thailand. We can not predict the weather and it can change suddenly. If you think bad weather would ruin your trip, please reconsider booking a trip with us. Thailand has a tropical climate that can not be predicted. We can not provide any compensation for rainy weather or change in locations. 

WE CAN NOT CONTROL THE NATURE . We can not affect if there will be any monkeys on Monkey Beach, Sharks, or jellyfish in the sea . We live on a beautiful island surrounded by beautiful nature which is wild and unpredictable. On some days we see monkeys, small sharks, turtles, or even dolphins. Some days we don’t see any monkeys, the visibility underwater is not good, and snorkeling is not so great. This is nature and we can not predict, or compensate for any lack of wild animals or nature phenomena.

Children below 3 years are free of charge. Children 10 years and older are full price. 

REFUND POLICY:  Our refund policy is a 100% refund if canceled up until 1 month of the date you are booked to come and 50% if you cancel between 48h and 1 month before the date of your trip. Cancelation of your booking less than 48 hours before or no show is no refund. In the unlikely event that we need to cancel due to bad weather, we will attempt to reschedule or offer you a full refund.
