Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."

Music Teacher Is Charged With Taking Teenagers on Trips to Abuse Them

Paul Geer taught for decades at the Family Foundation School, a rural reform academy where he abused students, an indictment states.

The music teacher’s classes at the strict, no-nonsense reform school in the woods of upstate New York would seem to be a teenager’s respite amid all the rules, a place for expression and discovery.

But a criminal indictment unsealed Thursday portrayed that teacher as a domineering and abusive tyrant who, during one-on-one trips away from school and outside the state, raped his teenage students or forced them into sexual activity.

The indictment follows years of lawsuits that have portrayed the Family Foundation School , a small boarding academy in rural Delaware County, as something closer to an unsupervised, violent prison.

The teacher, Paul Geer, 56, was arrested Wednesday evening in Hancock, N.Y., where he lives a short distance from the site of the school, which closed in 2014. He was charged with six counts related to bringing three different children across state lines to engage in unlawful sexual activity.

Mr. Geer pleaded not guilty at an arraignment before a federal magistrate judge in Syracuse, N.Y., on Thursday, and was denied release pending a detention hearing set for Monday.

For former students at the school, his arrest vindicated many years of online campaigns and legal battles involving that place and, specifically, that man.

Liz Boysick, 41, identified as “Victim 2” in the indictment, was 16 when Mr. Geer drove her to Pennsylvania ahead of a class trip there and forced her to perform oral sex in his van, she said. Decades later, she was in court to see Mr. Geer in shackles during the hearing.

“It was really powerful hearing what mattered to me counts,” she said afterward. “He will not get one more tear out of me. Now is the time for me to live my life.”

Mr. Geer was in his 20s and living with his parents when an older couple approached him at a choral recital he was leading and offered him a job at the Family School, as it is known, on the spot. They were Tony and Betty Argiros, who founded the school in the 1980s.

For Mr. Geer, that began a career of more than 20 years at the school, which billed itself as a last resort for parents frustrated and distraught by their children’s drug or alcohol abuse or behavioral issues. Former students have said he asked personal questions about their sex lives and singled out children to stay behind with him after class, which was held in a red barn beside a pond.

The indictment described Mr. Geer as a bully who, in addition to subjecting students to “repeated sexual abuse,” forced them to eat moldy food, haul heavy loads of rocks around the campus and endure communication blackouts for long periods.

On three separate occasions outlined in the indictment, Mr. Geer drove students out of state on one-on-one trips and coerced them into sexual activity. The victims were two boys and a girl, ages 14 to 17.

Mike Milia, 45, of Brooklyn, is identified as “Victim 1” in the indictment. He was 14 in 1994 when Mr. Geer took him on a fishing trip to Maine and sexually abused him, according to the indictment.

On the way back to Hancock, Mr. Geer “told him not to tell anyone of what had just happened,” according to a lawsuit filed by Mr. Milia in 2019. That case is pending.

Mr. Geer was questioned about taking a minor to Maine in a deposition that same year.

“In hindsight, I shouldn’t have done that,” he said, but he denied any sexual abuse.

“I think I behaved badly in a lot of ways,” Mr. Geer said in the deposition, referring to his time working at the school. “I definitely was very aggressive.”

The couple that founded the school later retired, and their son, Emmanuel Argiros, who goes by Michael, took over day-to-day operations before it closed. In depositions in 2018 and 2021, the younger Mr. Argiros denied hearing reports of abuse while at the school.

In 2018, The New York Times published an article describing a series of suicides and fatal overdoses by former students. More former students later came forward to describe horrific conditions at the school.

Liz Ianelli is a former student who recounted her time at the school and described the abuses inflicted on her there in her 2023 book, “I See You, Survivor.” She recalled being wrapped from neck to ankle in a blanket that was duct-taped closed, and left on the floor of an empty room, shimmying toward a bowl of tuna for food.

She was among the former students who hastily arranged travel to Syracuse on Thursday for the court hearing.

Sitting nearby was Mr. Milia, watching the man who had taken him to Maine 30 years ago.

“This guy threatened my life when I was 14 years old,” Mr. Milia said after the hearing. “When he walked through that door, it was the first time I felt like he couldn’t hurt me anymore. I am not scared anymore.”

2024 Texas Open: Akshay Bhatia on the verge of earning Masters invite with four-shot lead after Round 3

The lefty has his eyes on a trip to augusta national after staying ahead of the pack on saturday.

Akshay Bhatia has just one golfer to beat if he hopes to play at Augusta National next week. 

Bhatia leads the Texas Open by four shots over Denny McCarthy going into Sunday's final round. He's seven up on the next closest contender, Brendon Todd, who's at 8 under and seven away from Bhatia's 15 under following rounds of 63-70-68 from the now -350 favorite.

Though he won the Barracuda Championship in a playoff over Patrick Rodgers last year, this is a different caliber of field Bhatia is beating and doing so as the best iron player in the field. This formula is as impressive as it is sustainable.

As long as Akshay Bhatia continues to play his game, the only person who can beat him is ... Akshay Bhatia. He knows that and said on Saturday that he was roiling on the inside.

"I was never calm today, and it was the hardest thing to deal with," said Bhatia. "It's just so hard, you feel so tense and all these things in your stomach, your mind can kind of go one way. I kept to my game plan. I tried to talk as much as I could to my caddie."

He wrote a saying on his wrist before the round after talking to his sports psychologist.

"Yeah, it just says 'race my race,'" said Bhatia. "I'm just going at my own pace, focusing on myself, keeping the blinders right in front of me. I look at that all the time because you can get caught up in a lot of things out here. If I'm just kind of doing my own thing and trying not to let outside stuff bother me, then I just can focus on myself and whatever the outcome is, it is.

Bhatia's story is well known. He skipped college and turned professional right away, playing his way up through the Korn Ferry Tour ranks and onto the PGA Tour. At just 22 years and three months, he's younger than some of the amateurs who will be in the Masters next week and far better. Bhatia is in the middle of his best year as a pro with five top 20s in nine PGA Tour starts this year. 

This one has been by far the best. He has gained nearly 18 strokes on the field. Even if he shoots even par or something slightly worse tomorrow, that will still likely be enough for him to win the tournament.

"He's playing really good golf," said McCarthy, who will be paired with him in the final round. "I know I'm going to have to go out and play another solid round of golf. No pressure. I'm looking forward to the challenge tomorrow. I'm going to go out and try to play some free golf."

There is a lot at stake on Sunday. Not only Bhatia's first full field PGA Tour victory but also a bid into what would be his first Masters tournament next week. With the first major being played in just five days, it will be impossible to not at least think about the fact that a win would get him into Augusta National, where he has never teed it up in a tournament.

"If I win, that's great," said Bhatia. "I mean, it gets me closer to my goal. Yeah, it doesn't mean the world to me. I didn't grow up playing on the PGA Tour necessarily to win just PGA Tour events, I grew up playing and dreaming of winning majors. That's kind of my main focus for the years to come."

Surely, Bhatia has a number in mind that he needs tomorrow at TPC San Antonio to win this tournament. I'm guessing it's not 89, although maybe it is. If the young lefty does go on to win, the field at Augusta National next week will move from 88 players to 89 with Bhatia's last-minute bid.

Total solar eclipse could mean total traffic nightmare in NY as Hochul warns motorists to pack water, snacks

I f you’re taking a road trip for a better view of the eclipse, you’ll want to pack plenty of patience along with your safety glasses and granola bars.

Millions of Americans are hitting the road for Tuesday’s total solar eclipse, which is expected to cause a total traffic nightmare on at least 30 interstate highways in the path of the totality, where the sun will be completely blocked by the moon’s shadow for up to four minutes.

The expected impact on roadways from Western New York to Central Texas is already being compared to “20 or 30 Super Bowls happening all at once” by Richard Feinberg of the American Astronomical Society’s Eclipse Task Force.

At a special pre-eclipse press conference at Niagara Falls Sunday, Gov. Kathy Hochul warned that unusually heavy traffic was set to hit the Empire State in the coming days.

“We are literally over the moon to welcome over 1 million people to our state for this once in a generation moment,” Hochul said, speaking via Zoom from Albany amid protracted state budget talks .

Hochul said with so many gawkers expected, the state is treating the rare celestial happening “as if it’s one of the big storms” when it comes to traffic safety.

“The roads can only handle so much. And we’re expecting a high volume of traffic before and after the event.”

She also urged drivers not to pull their cars off to the side of the road during the eclipse.

“Please do not do that. If we need emergency vehicles to get through, our first responders, we’ll use that as the best place for them to get to possibly you and your family quickly,” she said.

“And make sure you have a full tank of gas.”

The New York Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services is also stepping up its efforts to ensure public safety during the eclipse, strategically deploying resources on land, sea and air.

Commissioner Jackie Bray told reporters the division has been preparing for the eclipse since 2022. She warned drivers who park where they’re not supposed to, “we will be ticketing and towing rapidly tomorrow morning, particularly up in the North Country.”

Bray advised all motorists to be careful, and to remember that it’s “mud season” when planning their routes. Anyone in need of help should call 511 or download the 511NY app, Bray said.

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls already declared a state of emergency  last week ahead of the solar eclipse, as it estimates up to 1 million visitors will descend on the iconic falls, as it has been deemed one of the best places to view it.

The rare celestial phenomena, which sees the moon pass between the Earth and sun, will start around 12:30 p.m. CST in Dallas before ending around 4:40 p.m. in Caribou, Maine.

As for the cities in the path of totality, a total blackout will begin anywhere between 1:40 p.m. CST in Dallas to 3:13 pm EST in Cleveland, to 3:32 p.m. EST in Caribou,  according to NASA.

New York’s official ILoveNY website is providing detailed information about peak viewing times and the best places to see the eclipse, as well as a map showing its path across the state.

The next solar eclipse in the region isn’t expected to take place until 2044.
