Hard rock veterans, Therapy?, have established a long career of over twenty years with their industrial-tinged, metallic sound, finding breakout success with their 1994 album, “Troublegum.”

Formed in 1989 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Therapy? was started by Andy Cairns (vocals, guiatrs), Fyfe Ewing (drums) and Michael Keegan (bass). The band quickly got to work on recording a number of early demos, which caught the attention of the legendary BBC DJ, John Peel, who played their single, “Meat Abstract,” on his show. Signing with Wiijia Records, the two EPS, “Baby Teeth” and “Pleasure Death” found Therapy? a growing number of fans in the UK and these early EPs also gained a US release as “Caucasian Psychosis” on Touch & Go Records.

Therapy? attracted major label attention before the trio decided to sign with A&M Records. “Hats of the Insane” helped set mouths watering for Therapy’s major debut full-length and they’re not to be disappointed. 1994’s “Troublegum” found huge success, with their melodic riffs brining them commercial exposure, nestling well alongside the popularity of grunge.

“Internal Love” followed in 1995, with the trio also embarking on extensive tours. The album was bleak and dark and remains one of their moodiest offerings. The band split from A&M Records after its release and joined Ark 21, releasing “Suicide Pact: You First,” regaining their enthusiasm. A greatest hits compilation, “Shameless” followed in 2001 yet it was released to growing internal problems, with the lineup changing, with Andy Cairns joined by Neil Cooper and Michael McKeegan, after Fyfe Ewing, Martin McCarrick and Graham Hopkins had all left to pursue different music ventures.

Again with a streamlined lineup, Therapy? certainly did not let this show with their 2006 release, “One Cure Fits All.” Heavy touring followed before again hitting the studio to work on their tenth album, “Crooked Timber” in 2009. Still very much a tour de force, Therapy? continued to destroy stages across the globe, soon finding themselves celebrating the release of their fourteenth studio album, “Disquiet,” in 2015, proving still that they are at the top of their game and one of the most important acts in the alternative metal scene.

Live reviews

Therapy? are a band who during the nineties made some of the best albums and E.P.s ever in Nurse, Troublegum etc. Infernal love was the album I lost interest in and it was around this time they replaced their fantastic drummer.

Therapy? never recovered from this setback in my eyes, I stopped buying their albums but on the 11th Nov 2000 they were playing at The leadmill in Sheffield supported by Dog Toffee. I had to go. They were excellent playing old with the new (to be fair I wanted to hear the classics) and I was soaked with sweat jumping in the moshpit to songs like "Nowhere". I've seen them five times at The Leadmill the best being the gig with The Wildhearts.

Therapy? write infectious pop tunes with a punk/metallic edge which also transcends to an indie audience. The last time I saw them was at the O2 Academy and they weren't great there but that might be the choice of venue. Therapy? are always worth seeing and buy Troublegum it's their finest hour.

Report as inappropriate

I've seen Therapy? so many times live now and they seem to keep getting better and better. Another awesome show on top of a list of awesome shows, the setlist included classic favorites and songs from their new album, so a nice mix. The icing on the cake? We had a pre-show beer in a local pub and Andy just happened to be doing exactly the same thing, so we got to say hello and a friend got his old Troublegum tape signed. Andy was a genuinely good guy too. Altogether an awesome band.

Songs from disquiet were well received as well as the old favourites such as knives and potato junky.

A room full of fans grinning from ear to ear spilled into the Nottingham streets after worshipping at the church of noise...

A great night and show for a band I've loved since the early 90's. Seen them in big venues and on huge festival stages. So to see them in an intimate venue was awesome. Still the nicest most down to earth band out there, who really do give a shit about their loyal fanbase

A high energy, quality performance from a scandalously under-rated band, who still sound as good, 22 years after I last saw them. Worth the wait!! So many great tunes that people probably forget they've heard, but it's great to remind them!!

Really good gig. They're full of energy and one can see that they're having fun on stage.

I'm glad they also played music from other albums after they played Infernal love, specially songs from Troublegum, including "Knives" :)

It makes me enjoy their gigs even more as you can see they play coz it's their life and they still do it with the same enthusiasm they had 20 years ago

Decent gig, quite nostalgic, good energy, in good form and played a lot of the classics, sound wasn't magnificent, but perhaps that was just me.

Gotta say, really enjoyed Trigger Finger, what a band, what a find!!!

Fan-bloody-tastic! A mix of new songs with the older classics !

Stories, teethgrinder...isolation... Etc etc ! Even after seeing Therapy? at Feile 91, they still manage to get the crowd hopin!!!

THERAPY? Announces 'Troublegum' 30th-Anniversary Tour

Exactly 30 years to the day since the release of their iconic album "Troublegum" , legendary Northern Irish rockers THERAPY? will hit the road in late 2024 to delight their fans with a sensational new show.

The multi-country tour will see the acclaimed band visit Australia, Isle of Man, Finland, Ireland, U.K., Germany, Luxemburg, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, Czech Republic, Austria and France.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, February 9 at 9 a.m. U.K. time / 10 a.m. CET at therapyquestionmark.co.uk/tour.

Released on February 7, 1994, "Troublegum" sold over a million copies worldwide, reaching No. 5 in the U.K. album charts as well as other countries across the globe and spawning hits including "Nowhere" , "Screamager" and "Trigger Inside" . It earned the band a Mercury Award nomination, two MTV nominations, "Album Of The Year" in Kerrang! and No. 2 in the Metal Hammer "End Of Year" list as well as a host of other nominations throughout Europe.

The setlist for the tour will feature "Troublegum" in its entirety, plus a host of other musical treats from around the same era of THERAPY? 's recording career.

THERAPY? frontman Andy Cairns told Louder : "As a band, we were not expecting the impact that 'Troublegum' would make. We knew we had worked very hard at our craft, every album gained more attention and we had steadily made more friends but even the earlier release and chart success of 'Screamager' (a nod to both our Irish punk godfathers and current 'alternative and noise rock' favorites) couldn't prepare us for just how much our lives were about to change.

"The album seemed to click with people all over the globe and what had begun as three young, ordinary men from the North of Ireland wanting to make the kind of music they would like to hear themselves became something that seemed to take on a life of its own as it found its way out into the world."

Team Charbrick Wins the Belgian BISC-E Student Competition during Tech Tour Circular 2024

( 26-04-2024 ) Team Charbrick wins the 2024 Belgian BISC-E competition, a featured event at this year’s Tech Tour Circular 2024 held on April 23-24.

Team Charbrick, composed of students from the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering of Ghent University, impressed the judges and audience with their innovation that integrates biochar from spent coffee grounds into cement manufacturing, improving concrete quality while halving the energy required for cement.

With their victory, Team Charbrick will represent Belgium at the European finals of the BISC-E competition, competing against finalists from 16 other countries. This provides an exciting opportunity to showcase further demonstrate the potential of their biochar-integrated concrete on a larger stage.

The Bio-based Innovation Student Challenge Europe (BISC-E), encourages students to explore innovation and business development in the emerging bioeconomy while developing a new biobased product or process. The challenge is open for all Bachelor and Master students (+ PhDs as coaches). Three student teams presented their projects:

First place: Team Charbrick (UGent)

Charbrick operates at the nexus of waste valorization and sustainable concrete production by integrating biochar production with cement manufacturing. Biochar from pyrolysis of spent coffee grounds is mixed in the cement, rendering a better concrete. Coupling the liberated green energy from pyrolysis moreover reduces the fuel requirement for cement kilns by 50%. Charbrick thus stands for better concrete and energy management. These students were Tilly Van Hecke, Fran Van de Velde, Arne Desmyter and Asmae Guerbaoui and guided by postdoc Stef Ghysels (UGent).

Second place: Team ECOGEL (UGent)

EcoGel, a game-changing solution that turns waste into value. By repurposing orange peel waste into a powerful hydrogel, EcoGel helps maintain the freshness of supermarket produce, minimizing waste and maximizing value. It’s not just about keeping fruits and vegetables fresh; it’s about reshaping our environmental impact. These students were Chiara Vikkula, Begüm Topçu Borrajo Bastero and Yerim Kim guided by Postdoc Maarten De Mol (UGent).

Third place: Team SCOBY (UGent + Arteveldehogeschool)

Scoby Paper valorizes a so far untapped waste stream by recovering microbial cellulose from scoby, a byproduct from kombucha production, and incorporating it in the paper and cardboard industry. The high quality of cellulose fibers requires a less intense pulping process, thus reducing the energy requirement and the need for water and (bleaching) chemicals. Furthermore, incorporation of microbial cellulose reduces the need for plant based cellulose, thus mitigating deforestation. Ultimately, Scoby Paper steers towards a circular and more sustainable paper and cardboard industry, where waste materials are repurposed into valuable resources. These students were Jasper Meere, Emma Verhoestraete and Flore Ongenae guided by PhD-student Arthur Van Cleemput (UGent).

Tech Tour circular event

The Tech Tour Circular event, organized by the Green Chem network of Ghent University and Stad Gent, wants to foster innovation and growth within the circular economy. This dynamic event showcased around 40 groundbreaking companies, each driving change in the circular economy and design sector, presenting to a group of active investors. They were all active in areas such as Construction & Infrastructure, Chemistry & Plastics, Bioeconomy, Manufacturing & Materials, Feed, Food, Fork, and Water Loops.
