los cristianos attractions tenerife

If you're staying in the southern part of Tenerife, which is where the island's main tourist resorts are located, it's quite easy to get around and explore various areas.

Depending on where you're staying you can even walk between places, like from Costa Adeje to Los Cristianos, or from Playa La Arena to Los Gigantes.

If you want to move around you can also hire a car (although parking can be difficult in most resorts), use the bus (guagua) or you can use the local taxi.

The main tourist areas and resorts in Tenerife are:

  • Playa Las Americas
  • Costa Adeje
  • Los Cristianos
  • Los Gigantes
  • Playa La Arena
  • Callao Salvaje
  • Puerto de la Cruz (the only resort on this list that is not in proximity to the other resorts)

siam park tenerife

The famous Siam Park was named as the best water park in the world for the second year in a row. You can visit the park at any time of the year, as the pools are heated to a comfortable 24 Celsius. We usually go to Tenerife in winter, so we visited the park in January and February and we had a great time, as it's far less crowded than in summer (just be sure to choose a sunny day for your visit if you are heading over in winter).

  • Full-day entrance ticket to Siam Park
  • Experience the biggest man-made wave in the world
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity starts

aqualand tenerife costa adeje

Aqualand is usually best suited for people traveling with younger kids, as they also have included access to a dolphin show at the same price. Some people recommend Aqualand over Siam Park because they had more attractions for younger kids, but Siam Park has recently opened a brand new area for kids, so if we had to pick one, we definitely prefer Siam Park over Aqualand, but it's good to know that you have options.

  • Entry into the park with use of all water rides
  • Dolphin show

loro park tenerife

Loro Parque is considered to be the best zoo in the world, as it was voted on first position by Tripadvisor users who have visited. We have visited Loro Parque several times and we loved it every time, all the animals are well taken care of and they have several shows that you can attend.

  •  Tenerife’s world-famous animal adventure park
  • One of the top attractions in the Canary Islands
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund

If you plan to visit both Siam and Loro Parque you can buy a combined twin ticket, as it's more convenient this way.

  • Book online: Loro Park & Siam Park Combined Ticket

jungle park

Jungle Park is another animal park in Tenerife, this time located in the South, very close to Los Cristianos. The park is beautifully landscaped and it truly looks like a jungle in some areas, with the luxurious vegetation and colorful flowers.

The park offers a free bus transfer from several resorts in Tenerife South, so it's easy to get there even if you don't have a rental car.

  • Entry to the park
  • Birds of prey in free flight show
  • Exotic birds in free flight show
  • Sea lion show
  • Penguin feeding time

best beaches tenerife

Ever wondered how many beaches there are in Tenerife? We have prepared a list of 101 beaches in Tenerife for you to discover and enjoy, but we're certain that you can still find some that are not on our list.

So please don't go to the same beach every day and go out to explore more of Tenerife. Also, here's a shorter list of the best beaches in Tenerife (in our opinion).

Teide tenerife 600 250

This is a MUST while in Tenerife. You get to see a unique volcanic landscape, with lots of great views, with Mt Teide at the center of it all.

Explore Mount Teide's most iconic places with an official guide, then hop on the cable car, which takes you almost to the summit. The cable car takes you all the way to 3.555 m, which will give you spectacular views over the national park. We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes and also bring a jacket or a cardigan, no matter the time of year since it can be very windy sometimes.

  • Includes transport from the North and South of the island
  • Official guide
  • Includes Teide cable car ticket
  • Discover the most visited National Park in Spain

If you want to climb on top of Mount Teide, you should reserve a permit ahead of time.

los gigantes cliffs tenerife

Don't miss the chance to see the cliffs in Los Gigantes or Acantilados de Los Gigantes as they are named in Spanish. You can spend some time on the beach (Playa Los Guios), but if you want to enjoy one of the best views of the cliffs you should head over to Mirador de Archipenque (this is the perfect spot to watch the sunset, as it offers a lovely view of La Gomera, the neighboring island).

From the marina in Los Gigantes, you also have the option to go on boat trips and the cruise by sail boat is one of the most popular in this part of Tenerife.

  • Time to swim and snorkel
  • Fresh fruit, home-made sandwiches (vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options) & Beverages, including cava, white and red wine, beer and soft drinks
  • 3-hour whale-watching cruise and time to swim and snorkel

masca tenerife

Masca is a picturesque village , settled inland in a location where residents of Tenerife used to hide when they were being attacked by pirates. If you have a hire car you can get there on your own, but you should try to get there as early in the morning as possible, otherwise, it gets really crowded.

The views are spectacular and there is a restaurant overlooking the valley, where you have to go even if only for a cup of coffee (the view is definitely included in the above-average price, but it's worth it).

whale watching dolphin boat trip tenerife

No holiday to Tenerife would be complete without a boat trip where you can see dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are ideal for spotting these majestic mammals and this 3 hours cruise also includes unlimited drinks, champagne, snacks and hotel pick-up.

  • Includes unlimited drinks
  • Champagne, Ham, cheese, and salad baguettes
  • Sonar equipment for listening to the dolphins and whales

garachico tenerife

A visit to Garachico is like going back in time: this small town has a rather dark history, being destroyed not once, but two times by volcanic eruptions.

Walk on its narrow streets, eat great ice cream on the seashore, and if you're visiting during the summer months, go swimming in the natural pools.

The natural pools in Garachico are actually a huge Tenerife attraction in summer, and they are popular not only with tourists but with the locals as well, so be prepared for big crowds, especially during those hot July and August weekend days.

dragon tree icod de los vinos tenerife

El Drago or the Dragon Tree is the island's most popular tree. The best view is the one from the town square, so there's no need to pay to see it up close. We totally recommend spending some time visiting Icod de los Vinos , a small town where you can see some buildings with typical Canarian architecture and wooden balconies. Garachico and Icod de los Vinos are situated very close to one another, so you should visit them on the same day.

If you want more ideas for a holiday that doesn't break the budget, read our article about free things to do in Tenerife .

dolphins tenerife canary islands

Snorkel alongside turtles in a non-intrusive way on a kayaking adventure in Tenerife that respects the animal's welfare and freedom.

Home to up to 5 different species of dolphins, including bottlenose dolphins, the waters just off the island’s coast are ideal to marvel at these lovable creatures.

Take a submarine dive in the lesser-explored waters of southern Tenerife.

This is a pretty unique experience and an exciting thing to do with kids in Tenerife, since they will be so thrilled to hop on a submarine and see the most exciting marine creatures in their natural environment.

The submarine dive takes around 50 minutes and it's a great activity for the entire family while on holiday in Tenerife.

la laguna tenerife

The town of San Cristobal de la Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it deserves at least a few hours to walk around and see the beautiful buildings. If you're with the kids you may want to visit the Museum of Science and the Cosmos and why not also the Museum of History and Anthropology.

anaga tenerife

The Anaga forest is one of the most magical places in Tenerife, with its laurel trees and wild beaches like the popular Benijo beach. If you have rented a car for your holiday, don't miss a day trip to this part of the island as it's one of Tenerife's most amazing places to see and visit. Look up at the weather forecast before you make the trip though, as sometimes it can be cloudy and foggy (especially during the winter months).

sunset in teide national park tenerife

Did you know that Tenerife is a great location for stargazing?

Watching the sunset in Teide National Park while sipping from a glass of champagne is really a unique experience, the views are incredible, you get to see the best sights inside the park and then you get to have a nice dinner, followed by a session of stargazing.

We went on this tour with Teide by Night a few years ago and our guide was really funny and knowledgeable, so we not only found out a lot of new things about Tenerife, but we were really blown away by the stargazing experience inside the national park.

  • Includes 3-course meal with wines, water, and coffee
  • Pick up from the South Coast of Tenerife
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before activity starts

santa cruz de tenerife

If you're having a cloudy day in the south and you don't know what to do in Tenerife besides laying by the pool, you could go and visit the island's capital - Santa Cruz de Tenerife . You have many things to do, including great shopping opportunities (the only Primark on the island is located inside Meridiano Shopping Center).

hiking tenerife

Tenerife is an amazing destination for hiking and the best time for this activity is between October and May when the temperatures during the day are ideal for walking (during the summer it can be too hot).

We have an entire article about the best hiking trails in Tenerife (in our opinion, based on the hikes we did) but even out of those we definitely recommend you do the Chinyero Loop and the hike through the Enchanted Forest El Pijaral (Bosque Encantado), in order to see up close the beauty of the Anaga forest.

walking in tenerife

In case you don't want to hike or you just don't have the proper hiking equipment with you... you can also walk and discover the beauty of Tenerife by choosing an easy path. We've walked from Los Gigantes to Playa San Juan (not in one go, but it is possible) and we've walked almost the entire southern coast, another town or resort every day, usually walking by the ocean on the promenade (when possible).

tenerife carnival

The carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered the second largest in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro and it is truly an amazing experience, especially if you want to mingle with the locals and party all night long. We've participated in the 2019 edition of the carnival and we loved the parades (especially the one on Friday, when the carnival is inaugurated), and then of course we loved the parties in the various squares in the city, the costumes, and the music.

la gomera canary islands

La Gomera is the island that you see every day if you are staying in the south of Tenerife. The island is much smaller compared to Tenerife, but it hides tremendous beauty, an amazing national park and forest and winding roads that lead to lookout points with modern architecture.

From Tenerife South, you can book a day tour that includes the ferry ride, transfer on the island in order to see all the best places, and lunch at Mirador Abrante (probably the most Instagrammed place on La Gomera).

  • Pickup from the south of Tenerife
  • Transfers & ferry (with live tour guide)
  • Lunch at Mirador Abrante

punta de teno tenerife

The view from Punta de Teno is amazing, as you get to see the cliffs of Los Gigantes from the other side. You can't visit the lighthouse, unfortunately, but the view is enough to be worth the drive there. There is also a small and pebbly beach there and when the ocean is calm you can swim here while enjoying the sight of the Los Gigantes Cliffs.

We have been to Punta de Teno several times, as it's one of our favorite places to visit in Tenerife, due to the spectacular views of the ocean and the cliffs, and we can tell you that the experience varies a lot depending on the weather. The place still looks impressive even when it's cloudy or rainy (some may even like the dramatic colors), but for a first-time experience, we definitely recommend visiting Punta de Teno on a dry and sunny day.

Most of the tourist resorts in Tenerife have a weekly market, where you can buy all sorts of things, from clothes, souvenirs, and handmade items to fake bags and watches, so if you want to do some shopping while there, check out the list of markets in Tenerife to see which is the nearest one to you.

Los Cristianos, Adeje, Alcala, and El Medano, all have a market and the items sold there are very similar since most vendors move daily from one market to the other.

guachinches tenerife

What is a Guachinche you may ask?

Well, a Guachinche is a type of local place to eat, specific to the island of Tenerife, or more specifically to the north of the island. A Guachinche should only serve local food, which should be accompanied by local wine (most of the Guachinches actually produce their own wine and this is a way to sell the wine directly to the public).

Most of the Guachinches that you can find in Tenerife are located in the following municipalities: Tacoronte, El Sauzal, Tegueste, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Victoria de Acentejo, Santa Úrsula, La Orotava, Los Realejos, Icod de los Vinos. As you can see, these are not the usual tourist places, so here you'll find that most of the customers are residents, and it would be great if you could speak some Spanish, as most of the servers don't speak English.

Even so, eating at a Guachinche is one of the unique experiences in Tenerife and we always try to find new ones, especially around Tegueste, Los Realejos, or La Orotava, which are our favorite areas for this, as we really like the wine in those parts.

12 Top-Rated Things to Do in Tenerife

Written by Michael Law and Lana Law Apr 12, 2023

Authors Michael and Lana Law enjoyed an extended visit to the Canary Islands in the fall of 2022 .

The wonderful island of Tenerife has things to do for everyone. Fantastic beaches, towering volcanoes, theme parks, and historic small towns make a trip here a delight.

View from Anaga Rural Park

The island is teardrop shaped and dominated by Volcan Teide, the third-highest volcano in the world . Miles of beaches are located in the far southern point, and dense pine forests full of hiking trails run along the spine of the island.

Getting to Tenerife is easy. Flights arrive from northern destinations in Europe almost on a minute-by-minute basis.

Discover the best places to visit on the island with our list of things to do on Tenerife.

1. Teide National Park

2. tenerife's beaches, 3. siam park, 4. meet animals at loro parque, tenerife, 5. monkey park, 6. drive to masca, 7. santa cruz de tenerife, 8. san cristóbal de la laguna, 9. go dolphin & whale watching, 10. drive the spine of the island, 11. la orotava, 12. go kiteboarding, winging, or windsurfing.

Lava flow on Tiede Volcano

One of Europe's most spectacular volcanic landscapes is a short drive from the resort areas of southern Tenerife. The massive Teide Volcano towers over everything at an astounding 3,715 meters. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not to be missed.

A fantastic and fun day can be had by renting a car and exploring the park. You'll find yourself wanting to stop and explore the shockingly barren landscape. Highlights include Teide Volcano, views at the Mirador de Boca Tauce, the weird and wonderful rocks at Los Roques de Garcia, and the unique area around the Queen's Shoe.

Hiking in Teide National Park

A highlight for many people is taking the cable car to the top of the volcano, one of the top tourist attractions on Tenerife. The modern and efficient cable car zips you up to the top in eight minutes flat. At the top, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the lunar-like terrain below, and if it's clear, the island of Gran Canaria and La Gomera off in the distance.

No matter what option you choose, be sure to bring warm clothes and sturdy shoes. It can be shockingly cold and windy in the park and especially at the summit of the cable car.

Playa de la Tejita

What kind of beach is your favorite? Does it have black sand or tan, is it large or small, busy or deserted, wavy or calm? Does it have amenities? All these and more are the tough decisions that you'll be faced with when planning your beach day.

There's no need to worry too much about making the wrong decision. No matter where you end up, the beaches are wonderful places. Many people faced with all these decisions decide to go to multiple beaches to sample something different each day.

All that said, the general consensus is that the beaches around the Maspalomas dunes are the best on the island. The golden sand runs for miles, the huge dunes behind are perfect for exploring, and a bustling tourist town nearby caters to every need you may have.

Siam Park

One of the most popular attractions on the island for families , Siam Park is all about good times in water. Try any of the amazing waterslides, or zip down the Mekong Rapids with your three closest friends.

Still need more adventure? Rip through the Vulcano or go blasting down the Tower of Power. Those less inclined to speed should float down the Mai Tai river.

A must-do is the giant beach with manmade waves perfect for surfing, boogie boarding, or just splashing about. Those with young children can let them loose in the Lost City, a water-filled wonderland.

Save money with a combo ticket to Loro Parque but note it is on the other side of the island from where most people stay. Siam park offers a free shuttle service from points along the Costa Adeje.

Address: Av. Siam, s/n, 38660 Costa Adeje, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Dolphins at Loro Parque

A sister property to Siam Water Park, Loro Parque is another excellent thing to do as a family on Tenerife. Visitors young and old can't help but be impressed by the sheer number of interesting and entertaining animals in the park.

One of the few remaining killer whale shows in the world takes place here, and the sheer power of these creatures as they jump and splash around the pool is astounding. In addition to the whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, and birds all perform as well. This non-stop entertainment will have even those with the shortest attention span fully engaged.

As well as the shows, 35 different animal enclosures are home to capybaras, coatis, pandas, gorillas, white tigers, hippos, and many more unique and interesting animals from around the world.

A fascinating aquarium is a must-see when visiting. Take a stroll through the tunnel that goes right through the massive tank. Seeing the sharks, rays, and hundreds of other fish effortlessly glide by is enthralling.

Loro Parque is located on the western side of the island. They offer a free shuttle service from the Costa Adeje area.

Address: Av. Loro Parque, s/n, 38400 Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Squirrel monkey at Monkey Park

If you are looking for that perfect tropical location photo with a monkey or parrot on your shoulder, the Monkey Park should be your go-to location. Hundreds of monkeys are in residence here, and if you purchase the feed, the ones that are available to interact will suddenly become your best friend.

In addition to the ever-entertaining monkeys, over 100 guinea pigs, ring-tailed lemurs, iguanas, a huge crocodile, snakes, and a colorful assortment of noisy birds make up the critters in residence. Admission here is a bargain compared to the theme parks.

Address: Camino Moreque,Llano Azul,17 Tf662 Km 2, 38627, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

View over the town of Masca

One of the must-see towns on Tenerife is Masca. This small village is located in a spectacular valley that looks like it's been ripped right from the Hawaiian Islands.

It boggles the mind that this place can even exist, situated on a volcanic spine in the middle of a valley that extends to the ocean. The town itself is definitely worthwhile; however, the road to get there is a challenging and slow drive.

Scenery along the drive to Masca

A seemingly never-ending series of twists, turns, switchbacks, and harrowing drop-offs greet the driver and possibly the slightly terrified passenger. Several spectacular viewpoints are located along the way and are well worth the stop.

At the end of your ride, have a delightful lunch on a scenic patio. Book ahead to get a prime seat. A good place to visit, with wonderful views, is La Fuente Restaurant .

Although the distance on the map is short, the actual drive time is much longer, so plan accordingly.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a great spot to explore. This modern city is home to some of the best museums in the Canary Islands including the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Nature and Man and a must-visit for culture vultures.

If, after spending some time at the beach, your resort wear is looking a bit shabby compared to the scene, the retail shops in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will get you looking your best in no time flat.

For a classy evening out, dress up and dine at one of the city's more sophisticated restaurants followed by a performance at the spectacular Auditorio de Tenerife .

San Cristobal de La Laguna

For a taste of real Tenerife, plan a trip to the beautiful little town of San Cristobal de La Laguna. A historical gem and UNESCO World Heritage Site , the town is a relaxed place, with pedestrian streets and wonderful architecture dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Join the locals as they stroll with their families up and down the wonderfully restored streets, stopping here and there for a snack, full meal, or a cup of coffee while catching up on the latest gossip.

Dining outdoors in San Cristobal de La Laguna

See as much or as little of the town as you like, but one place definitely worth stopping by is the Iglesia de Nuestra La Concepción . This parish church predates much of the city and was built in 1496, when San Cristobal de la Laguna was the main capital for all the Canary Islands .

For a deep dive into the city's history, swing by the History and Anthropology Museum . You'll find it in the Casa de Lecaro, first constructed in 1593.

Pilot whales off Tenerife

The rich waters off the southern coast of Tenerife attract a variety of whales and dolphins all year. Keen (and very lucky) spotters can see sperm whales, Eden's whales, and pilot whales right from land along the Costa Adeje. In addition to these three, another 18 species of dolphins ply these waters.

For a better chance of seeing these majestic creatures, you'll need to get out on the ocean, and the best way to do this is to take a tour.

Teide Volcano

Need a break from the beach and crave adventure? A full-day drive along the spine of the island checking out the best natural sights and a historical town is just the ticket.

This route forms a giant loop and starts in the southern resort areas. Head north along the expressway bypassing Santa Cruz de Tenerife and heading to Anaga Rural Park . Drive up the twisty road through the park to the Mirador Cruz del Carmen lookout and enjoy the fantastic view. Feeling active? Take the short but intense Sendero de los Sentidos trail.

Return down the same twisty road and follow the signs to the Old Town area of San Cristobal de La Laguna (La Laguna). Soak up the history as you stroll the narrow streets being sure to swing by the beautiful Catedral de San Cristobal de La Laguna. Put a checkmark next to that attraction and recharge with a cappuccino on a sunny patio while admiring the 17th- and 18th-century architecture that envelops you.

Scenery near Teide Volcano

Now it's time for some full-on nature. Leave La Laguna and head along Highway TF-24 and ascend upwards, eventually emerging in the forests where you'll find massive pine trees. Be sure to stop at the amazing viewpoints (miradors) along the way.

A number of delightful hiking trails through the forest are located along this stretch of highway. Stop for a quick stroll and do a bit of nature bathing.

The road keeps climbing, and the forests transition to a bizarre lunar landscape dominated by the massive Teide volcano . Take the cable car to the top if you want, or for something more sedate, book a table at the Parador Nacional for a late lunch and soak up the views of the volcano. Additional hiking trails can be found in this area and range from easy strolls right through to steep climbs up the side of the volcano.

Hijuela del Botánico in La Orotava

La Orotava is a National Historic-Artistic Site and a wonderful place to wander around. The colonial town is full of stately old homes, many of which have beautifully carved wooden balconies. This bucolic scene attracts artisans from around the world who have opened interesting galleries and shops full of one-of-a-kind items.

As you wander through the town, be sure to see the Casas de los Balcones , dating from the early 17th century. Step inside and tour the museum and gallery of traditional Canarian crafts and needlework.

Another highlight of a visit is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción , dating from the 16th century. This ornate Baroque church is known for its two bell towers. Those with a green thumb will definitely want to visit the Hijuela del Botánico , home to more than 3,000 colorful tropical flowers.

Nearby in Puerto de La Cruz is a fantastic botanical garden that is also well worth visiting. The massive ficus tree is stunning. Admission is a bargain at only three Euros per person.

Kiteboarding on Playa Medano

The best spot for kiteboarding, winging, or windsurfing on Tenerife is Playa del Medano . This legendary spot has been drawing legions of watersports enthusiasts for years and is a stop on the PWA world windsurfing competition tour.

Three kilometers of soft black sand, consistent wind, and beautiful views make it a perfect spot to get out and get active. Hardcore windsurfers should head to Cabezo, just around the point. But be aware, this is an advanced location. The location is best when the wind is from the east-northeast.

Kite shops, windsurfing shops, and surf shops line the boardwalk at the back of the beach, giving the place a fun and convivial feeling. A good restaurant to recharge your energy stores is the Café Flashpoint , home to incredible breakfasts and strong coffee.

The town of El Medano is low-key and not touristy, catering more to locals than the international traveler. If you aren't into the windsports scene and want to just hit the beach, head to the north corner of the beach where it's calm and protected.

The Most Beautiful Places in Tenerife

The most beautiful places in Tenerife

When you itemise Tenerife’s attractions it ends up sounding like a fantasy island – the best aspects of other destinations cobbled together in one spot: a Herzog & de Meuron-designed art gallery, a high-energy street carnival, sun-soaked wineries and Garachico’s ethereal natural pools. But this isn’t some mash-up of London, Rio, Provence and the Dolomites we’re talking about, it’s Tenerife, which, without making a big fuss about it, has been quietly maturing into one of Europe’s most exciting destinations, with extraordinary experiences such as whale-watching, star-gazing in Teide National Park, and some of the world’s best hotels, restaurants and spas.

Having carried a reputation as the Canaries’ party island for some time – all beach bars, pink drinks and all-night discos – Tenerife is now ready to show off its elevated, more cultured side, along with its natural splendour and lesser-known villages.

The National Parks: otherworldly landscapes and wildlife

Parque Nacional del Teide

Away from the city, there are two stunning national parks. The first, Parque Nacional del Teide, sits slap bang in the middle of the island, and is dominated by El Teide, the most imposing of the Canaries’ many awesome volcanoes, which at 3,718 metres is Spain’s tallest peak. The park’s 190 square kilometres comprise one vast UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an extraordinary place to explore; bizarre rock formations rear up out of nowhere, strange desert flora clings to the hillsides and the whole landscape feels haunting and otherworldly. It’s a fair hike up to the mouth of the volcano – better to take the cable car for an unmatched perspective of the entire island and even follow one of Volcano Teide ’s guides for an awesome session of sunsets and star-gazing (the lack of pollution reveals planets, galaxies and clusters in their full glory).

Parque Rural de Anaga

By contrast, Parque Rural de Anaga in the far north of the island is a lush, rugged paradise where stunning hiking trails cut through dense woodland and deep valleys carve astonishing views across ancient forests. A protected biosphere reserve, the park is home to an abundance of life including the island’s fabled dragon trees and a whole host of birds, among them shearwaters and owls. Up here you’ll also find some of Tenerife’s loveliest villages including Afur, a tiny whitewashed hamlet that sits prettily surrounded by hills. Other settlements in the north are similarly handsome, such as San Cristóbal de la Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and university town known as the ‘Florence of the Canary Islands’ for the many churches and brightly painted historical houses in its old centre. As the former capital of Tenerife, it's home to grande dames such as boutique La Laguna Gran Hotel , a bastion of traditional Canarian architecture and design with a genteel interior courtyard and rooftop pool.

Santa Cruz: culture and food

Tenerife Espacio de las Artes

Tourists have long been drawn to the south of Tenerife with its resorts, beaches and booming nightlife, but the real hub of the island is its capital, Santa Cruz. Here you’ll find Herzog & de Meuron’s strikingly beautiful modern-art gallery, Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA), which houses a permanent collection of work by local surrealist Oscar Domínguez and a roster of first-class touring exhibitions. Santa Cruz is also home to Santiago Calatrava’s Auditorio, a 1,600-seat opera house and design marvel which sits on the water’s edge recalling a vast white helmet of a punk-rock charioteer.

Santiago Calatravas Auditorio

But it’s not all edification. There’s a brilliant complex of swimming pools and restaurants, Parque Marítimo, designed by artist César Manrique, which is a glorious place to while away a sunny afternoon. And, although on hold this year due to Covid-19, February usually brings a month-long riot of a carnival, second only in size and stature to Rio de Janeiro’s, which rollicks around the old town’s streets, a samba-induced spectacle of sparkly outfits and animated costumes and devil-may-care debauchery.

The most beautiful places in Tenerife

The city is also the best place for top-rung restaurants, showcasing a combination of Spanish and Latin American-influenced plates, and using sun-ripened vegetables, fruit and fish plucked fresh from the sea. For a whistle-stop tour of the island’s tasty bounty, peruse the stalls at Mercado Nuestra Señora de Africa, then head to Santa Cruz’s smartest haunts such as La Posada del Pez and San Sebastián 57 where chef Alberto González Margallo’s fish dishes (particularly the black cherne and tuna tartare) demand a try. Taking centre stage in Tenerife’s more low-key, traditional food scene is the island’s famous papas arrugadas , deeply flavoured potatoes grown in rich volcanic soil which are boiled in seawater and then roasted until their skins crinkle. Locals eat them with grilled sardines and lashing of mojo rojo sauce made from red pepper and garlic. These, along with other traditional Canarian dishes, are best enjoyed at Mesón Los Angeles, which serves papas arrugadas with choco (cuttlefish) and mojo sauce, or alfresco at Santa Cruz’s Restaurante Casa Comida La Hierbita, a legendary spot that's been open for more than a century and is known for its puchero canario (Canarian stew) and locally led wine cellar.

Bodegas Monje vineyard

Indeed, the real surprise is the quality of the island’s wine. The vines planted here by Spanish settlers some 500 years ago survived the devastating root louse epidemic which killed 90 per cent of European vines in the 19th century, leaving Tenerife with a host of grape varieties that you can’t find anywhere else. Make sure you try the heroic red Listán Negro (family-owned vineyard Tajinaste in the Valle de la Orotava produces a particularly good one, as does Bodegas Monje with its 500-year old vines creating an intense, volcanic character), and round off lunch or supper with a glass of sweet and aromatic Malvasía wine (try Brumas de Ayosa Malvasía Dulce).

The coastline: craggy walks, wild beaches and boat trips

Afur Tenerife

And of course there is Tenerife’s glorious coastline. The big hotels are clustered around family-friendly strips of white sand, but the real draw here are the island’s wilder spots. At Los Gigantes on the west coast, the black cliffs surge from the water, creating scenery worthy of Game of Thrones . Sunset boat trips are the best way to appreciate the 600-metre-high cliffs and there is a saltwater lido at the base which gets bashed thrillingly by waves as you swim in its calm waters. For an alternative beach experience, try the wild black sands at Playa del Bollullo, near Puerto de la Cruz. Accessible only via footpath, the beach tends to be quiet, allowing you to explore its untamed beauty away from the crowds. For a breathtaking coastal walk, go to Almaciga up north in the Anaga national park where the path is cut into the rocks and the green cliffs tumble down to the water’s edge. And with 21 of the world’s 79 species of dolphin and whale circling the south of the island (at Puerto Colón and Los Gigantes) all year round, a whale-watching adventure is almost obligatory – there’s no better (or more sustainable) way to do it than aboard a catamaran followed by sundowners.

Garachico Tenerife

For a truly authentic Canarian experience, start in the charming little town of Garachico on the north coast. Once the island’s commercial hub, it was decimated by floods and then half-submerged in volcanic lava in 1706. Today, it’s a magical place of artisanal shops, rustic tapas joints and pretty coves that make for great sea swimming spots. Stay at historic boutique hotel San Roque (a sympathetically restored 18th-century Canarian manor house), or equally as splendid Hotel la Quinta Roja, a pastel-pink 17th-century mansion with a vast palm-filled courtyard and photogenic watchtower.

Brilliantly, all this is available all year round – we especially love Tenerife in September, after the summer rush and before the high winter season gets going, when the place is roomier and languidly lovely.

Gorgeous weather, thrillingly modern culture, spectacular beaches and unexpectedly stunning countryside – perhaps Tenerife is a fantasy island after all.

19. Visit Garachico or Icod de Los Vinos

places to go in tenerife north, dancing outside large wooden door

The beautiful towns of Garachico and Icod de Los Vinos make fantastic bases from which to explore Tenerife.

This wild month-long (seriously!) carnival brings the capital of Tenerife to a standstill during the peak week of festivities when local businesses close down so people can concentrate on partying.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival is claimed to be the second most important and popular carnival after the massive Rio de Janeiro Carnival.

The carnival culminates with the ‘the burial of the sardine’ ceremony (honestly!).

As you might imagine, this is a very lighthearted, but fantastically fun affair.

22. Go Go-karting

30. See Los Roques de García

best hikes in Tenerife, rock formations in a rocky desert covered in desert plants on a sunny day

In Tenerife, things to see are around every corner and you’ll often be amazed what you find.

However, few are quite as spectacular as the famous Roques de García (García Rocks), a must not miss for anyone visiting the island.

The best way to see the rocks is by taking the easy 2-mile loop trail through the area.

One of the most recognized Tenerife tourist attractions, the rocks here are so famous they have names!

El Roque Cinchado is considered emblematic in Tenerife. Other noted rocks you’ll encounter include El Torrotito , El Burro , and the sensational Los Roques Blancos .

Final words on things to do in Tenerife

Tenerife is unlike any other place in Europe!

With its location just off the coast of West Africa, the island has a unique array of flora and fauna, areas of great ecological significance, and a culture that has grown almost paradoxically as a part of, and apart from, Europe.

The Guanches , Tenerife’s indigenous people, have a heritage that has integrated with Spanish culture, while at the same time allowing for many traditions to be passed down through the generations.

For those seeking to immerse themselves in the local culture then try and time your trip to coincide with the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival.

Here you’ll witness many of the existing traditions of Guanche culture being acted out!

The incredible Cuevas Negras (Black Caves) are also worth exploring for their fascinating history as the Guanches have inhabited the caves at various points in the island’s history.

And don’t miss the magnificent MUNA (Museum of Nature and Archaeology) in Santa Cruz.

In the past, Tenerife was synonymous with the ills of over-tourism (even though this was confined mainly to a relatively small part of the island), but in recent years Tenerife has become a hotbed for ecotourism.

With the island’s stunning geography and unique flora and fauna, it’s easy to see why.

While not all of the things to do in Tenerife listed in this article are eco-friendly (go-karting for example!), you’ll find most of the items detailed are sustainable activities.

Mount Teide trips, the Cave of the Winds, Barranco del Infierno, and the Masca Valley hike are among the many examples of eco-friendly activities in Tenerife that you can indulge in and not be left with a guilty conscience.

The thing to note about Tenerife is the diversity of options on the island.

From exploring the beautiful historic towns of La Orotava, Garachico, and Icod de Los Vino to all the magnificent things to do in Santa Cruz, the cultural capital.

You definitely won’t be short of places to visit in Tenerife.

Whether you want to indulge in all the great activities in Tenerife, have a hedonistic vacation partying the nights away, or soak in the island’s rich culture, there is a lot on offer for you.

Tenerife is also a fantastic option for those on a budget as despite being part of Spain, the island enjoys VAT-free status, making it a very reasonable destination to visit.

You’ll be able to ponder on that one while having a cheap cocktail on one of the many fine beaches in Tenerife!

What to see in Tenerife: 22 not-to-be-missed attractions

Information

It is said that Tenerife has a little of each of the Canary Islands. This fascinating island in the Atlantic ocean boasts a variety of landscapes and climates. Mount Teide, at 3,718 metres high, is a huge giant of nature that dominates the island. The famous volcano is the heart of this island full of contrasts. In the winter months, its snow-clad contours are a source of surprise to tourists bathing in the sea.

The natural beauty of the island of Tenerife astonishes travellers. The same is true of the other Canary Islands, such as  Gran Canaria ,  Lanzarote  and  Fuerteventura . Areas of lush vegetation thrive side by side with arid areas. The island has beaches of volcanic rock, black sand and strong waves, but it also has other, gentler beaches with golden sands.  And then there is the charm of Tenerife’s delightful towns and villages. Cities such as Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz and San Cristóbal de la Laguna offer interesting options for both leisure and culture.  Everything here, on the largest and most populated island in the Canary archipelago, invites you to enjoy your visit exploring the huge variety of  activities  on offer.

1. PLACES YOU MUST SEE IN TENERIFE

When the French poet André Breton climbed to the summit of Mount Teide in 1935, he did not hesitate to describe Tenerife as the ‘surrealistic island’. The weird shapes formed by the lava fascinated the father of Surrealism. He immersed himself in the mystical qualities of the place, the native plant species, and the sea of cloud seen on the descent from Las Cañadas — and fell in love with it. It is difficult not to be similarly affected by such an extreme, astounding landscape.

Reaching a height of 3,718 metres ,  Mount Teide  is the roof of Spain, and the third largest volcanic structure in the world. Its majestic presence dominates the entire island.  And on clear days, it can be seen from other islands in the archipelago.  Locals returning home after a time away are always overjoyed to see it again.  Travellers to the island store its image in their memory. It is one of those corners of the world where it seems possible to grasp the harmony with nature that humans long for.

Parque Nacional del Teide

The beauty of Tenerife can be appreciated in full when you visit the Teide National Park . The Park was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2007. The mountain’s highest peak rises over the ancient Las Cañadas caldera . The Park covers 19,000 hectares, and includes outstanding volcanic formations such as Montaña Blanca  and  Pico Viejo  (or Chahorra). These wild, sublime surroundings hold endless surprises. The different silhouettes and colours of the lava are a breathtaking spectacle. Lovers of botany can enjoy seeing plant species as remarkable as the red tajinaste, with its slender flower spikes. And, of course, there are cedar trees, pines and Canary Island willows. Walking enthusiasts have access to a varied network of paths. The ascent in the cable car (starting from the base of the volcano at 2,356 metres, and travelling up to La Rambleta at 3,555 metres) is a unique experience. You can climb from there up to the peak if you have obtained a special licence from the Park authorities. But it is a demanding climb, so it is only recommended for the most experienced and well-prepared walkers.

El Barranco del Infierno, a remarkable expedition

The  Barranco del Infierno  is a staggering sight. This is a beautiful landscape of great geological interest within the municipality of Adeje.  Almost 50% of the land in Adeje is protected natural space. An outstanding example of such a space is the Barranco del Infierno Special Nature Reserve.  The area offers a hike over deep gorges, waterfalls and caves that were once home to the Guanches, Tenerife’s original inhabitants.  On this 6.5-kilometre walk (there and back), you can appreciate the different types of flora and fauna, enjoy breathtaking waterfalls, and admire the magnificent Caidero , a huge, 200-metre-high cascade formed by waters from the upper stretch of the river Roque Abinque.

Barranco del Infierno

El Drago Milenario

One of Tenerife’s more unusual tourist attractions is a tree typically found in the Canary Islands: the dragon tree.  But this is not just any dragon tree: this one is at least 800 years old, and is believed to be the oldest in the world.  It stands in the town of Icod de los Vinos; is 18 metres tall and its trunk is over 20 metres in circumference.  You can see it in the Plaza de la Constitución or, to get a better view, go into the  Drago Milenario Park , where the paths are lined with other native species.

El Drago Milenario

Cueva del Viento

Tenerife’s Cueva del Viento , also in Icod de los Vinos, is one of the island’s most impressive volcanic caves. Stretching back for 18 kilometres, it is one of the longest caves on the planet. When it was first discovered, in 1969, it was only possible to penetrate the first 6 kilometres.  However, over time, successive explorations have revealed the full extent of the cave.

Inside can be seen different geomorphological formations and fossils. There are guided visits, and the tour is of moderate difficulty, but not recommended for children under the age of five, or people with mobility problems.

The cliffs of Los Gigantes are an incredible sight. Located on the western coast of Tenerife, most belong to the administrative districts of  Buenavista del Norte  and the others to  Santiago del Teide , within the  Teno Rural Park . The sheer, rocky walls of Los Gigantes rise majestically above the sea, reaching a height of 600 metres in places.

Getting to see them is not difficult, as there are countless opportunities to gaze on the majesty of the cliffs from out at sea (where they extend down to a depth of 30 metres) or on dry land, although access to the area of the cliffs themselves is necessarily restricted by the impenetrable nature of the formation. A boat trip is the best way to see this basalt wall of volcanic origin.

Los Gigantes

The cliffs of Los Gigantes

An alternative is to make your way to the Archipenque viewing point , on the main road between Tamaimo and Puerto de Santiago. From here, you can see the cliffs of Los Gigantes in all their magnificence. You can also see the tourist resort that bears their name, with its leisure marina; the Punta de Teno lighthouse , and even the island of La Gomera. At the foot of Los Gigantes lies the beach of the same name. It is a genuine pleasure to stroll along its dark-coloured shore, to bathe in its calm waters and to admire the views.

Parque Rural de Anaga

Anaga  is the name of the mountain range that spans north-eastern Tenerife. In this area, which is a paradise for hikers, there is so much to explore. The Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2015. Before that, it was a Rural Park.  Along with Teide Natural Park, it is the island’s great natural treasure.

The massif has an average height of around 850 metres above sea level, and extends over the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, and Tegueste. The average height of the rocks that form it do not exceed 1,000 metres, but between them there are gullies up to 300 metres in depth. In these depressions grow laurel forests, which are home to many plant and animal species.

Parque rural Anaga

Various hiking trails cross the area, of different lengths and levels of difficulty. The best-known path is the so-called Bosque encantado [Enchanted Forest]. This takes you into what is known as the Reserva Natural Integral de El Pijaral , which covers around 300 hectares. Here you will find one of the largest concentrations of ferns in the Canary Islands, with many different species. Among them is Píjara, the fern that gave this place its name, and whose leaves can grow up to three metres in length.

If you want to know more about the unique Anaga Rural Park, you really need to stop off at the Visitor Centre, the Centro de Visitantes de la Cruz del Carmen . One of Tenerife’s most spectacular and unforgettable beaches, Benijo beach , is to be found in the Anaga area. It belongs to the delightful town of Taganana , in the hamlet from which the beach takes its name. The beach lies between two rocks, and is reached via a stepped path.

The Güímar Pyramids Ethnographic Park and Botanical Gardens,  is an attraction covering over 64,000 m2 in Tenerife, and to which Thor Heyerdahl dedicated a great deal of work. At the beginning of the 1990s, the renowned explorer took up the cause of protecting several stepped pyramids that had been found here.  He saved them from destruction, or from being integrated somehow into an urban development. The origins of the Pyramids of Güímar are uncertain; some attribute them to ancient civilizations, while others believe they are mounds created by farmers.  Be that as it may, today this complex is open to the public, and includes a museum, a garden with poisonous plant species, an auditorium, and more. This is a perfect excursion from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a mere 28 kilometres away.

Loro Parque, a surprise at every turn

Loro Parque  is very near to Playa Jardín, in Puerto de la Cruz. The park, which covers an area of 135,000 m2, is one of the most popular attractions in the Canary archipelago.  Tourists from all over the world come to see the world’s largest and most diverse parrot reserve.  But these tropical gardens are home to many other species too.  Adults and children alike are fascinated by the animal and exotic plant life here.

Named several times by Tripadvisor as ‘Best Zoo in the World’, Loro Parque offers the chance to get a close-up look at its huge family of parrots. But you can also see lions, tigers, hippopotamuses, killer whales, sea lions, penguins, flamingos, sharks, alligators and turtles. All the animals live in spaces that replicate their natural habitats.

Loro Parque

Loro Parque

The penguin park Planet Penguin is the largest in the world, and is an outstanding attraction. It is an amazing slice of the Antarctic Ocean transported to the mild climate of Tenerife. But Loro Parque has many other areas that captivate visitors. Here, there is a surprise around every corner. And the zoo helps to build love and empathy for the animal kingdom. This certainly happens when you watch the park’s birds in the Loro Show , a pioneering event in Europe. It also happens when you see the killer whales and the sea lions. And the dolphins, which are so endearing performing their tricks and capers in front of a spellbound audience.

It is also worth seeing the area called Katandra Treetops , the setting for one of the world’s most fabulous free-flight aviaries. Here, hundreds of tropical birds fly over the heads of visitors and squawk and chatter around them. In this corner of the park, you will feel that you have been transported to a South American tropical rainforest. In other parts, it feels like you are in a jungle or enjoying the harmony of a genuine zen garden . This park, which stands out thanks to its initiatives to protect the environment and to conserve species, has so many wonderful attractions.

Tenerife’s most colourful and international festival is its  CARNIVAL , which well deserves be written in capitals, given its importance to the entire population of the island. It even enjoys the status of being a Festival of International Tourist Interest . Although this festival can only be properly appreciated by actually seeing it in person, we can give you a few details to help you before you set off.

Tenerife Carnival has three events that you really shouldn’t miss: the gala to select the Carnival Queen , where contestants compete in terms of glamour and imaginative costume to achieve a place of honour; the Cabalgata [Procession], in which the people take part in their finest costumes; and the Coso, the grand procession along the seafront, with carnival queens and their maids of honour, floats and music groups. A spectacular climax, and not to be missed if you want a great time.

2. TENERIFE’S MOST PICTURESQUE TOWNS AND VILLAGES

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a city made for leisurely strolling

Santa Cruz de Tenerife , the island’s capital, with its dignified air, is welcoming and friendly towards visitors. Among the city’s attractions are the  Barranco de Santos , and the  Cordillera de Anaga , with their traditional, colourful cottages and, of course, their seafronts. The city centre is easily covered on foot, and everywhere — the parks, squares and landscaped areas — seem designed with strolling in mind.  There are so many delightful spots to discover in Santa Cruz.

To get a real feeling for the city’s atmosphere,  Plaza de España  is the place you need to make for. This is where the locals gather to socialise, at the terraces around the square.  The area has been remodelled in accordance with a design by the Swiss architects  Herzog and De Meuron . And the stars of the project are an impressive lake and a geyser, almost 30 metres in height.

Calle del Castillo , one of the city’s main shopping thoroughfares, is another tourist attraction. From here, you can reach other well-known pedestrian areas as well as delightful little passageways and narrow streets. It is well worth visiting the Toscal neighbourhood , a district steeped in character. And you may also enjoy a walk around the stately Ramblas . This boulevard leading down to the sea is lined with impressive colonial-style mansions. It has many quiet terraces and outdoor sculptures.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

One of the city’s most outstanding squares is the Plaza del Príncipe, with its traditional central kiosk. This is where the locals meet up for a drink at one of the terraces. Among the city’s many parks, García Sanabria is one worth visiting. It features a clock created from flowers at its entrance, and its botanical garden is well stocked with lush vegetation. Santa Cruz also has some splendid museums. Lovers of modern art should not miss the TEA (Tenerife Espacio de las Artes) [Tenerife Arts Space]. The building, another designed by the renowned architects Herzog and De Meuron, is definitely worth seeing. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the island’s original inhabitants, the Guanches, should visit the Museo de la Naturaleza y la Arqueología .

Other enjoyable things you can do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are: going for a stroll around the port area; Going for a swim at the beach of Las Teresitas or in the swimming pools at the Parque Marítimo César Manrique ; Visiting the market, the Mercado Nuestra Señora de África ; Attending a concert in the ultra-modern Auditorio de Calatrava ; And the simplest approach of all: just allow yourself to appreciate the beauty of the trees and flowers on every corner. The lovely royal poinciana trees, the magnolias, oleanders, among others.

Puerto de la Cruz  is the tourist capital of the North of Tenerife. And one of the first places in Spain to attract visitors on a grand scale.  English travellers discovered the city in the mid nineteenth century.  The visit by  Agatha Christie  in 1927 has gone down in history. The writer came to this beautiful part of Tenerife to recover from her divorce and the death of her mother.  She stayed in the old Hotel Taoro, and wrote two of her books there.  In one of them, The Mysterious Mr.  Quin, she depicts some of the city’s most emblematic spots.  The name of the lady who is a character in this story has gone down in the history of Puerto de la Cruz.  A statue of her can be seen in the La Paz viewing point.

Many of the attractions that so captivated the English writer still remain intact. If you visit the little fishing port, you can take a very pleasant walk along the avenue that borders the seafront. One star attraction in this area is the Lago Martiánez complex . Designed by the Canary Island artist César Manrique , this installation covers an area of 100,000 m2. Inside are seven swimming pools filled with sea water. There is also a large central lake containing five islands, along with gardens, terraces, viewing points, and sculptures. Manrique’s artistry shines through in the exotic character of the complex. Spending a day here is a brilliant plan. There are bars and restaurants for visitors to enjoy. And the complex even has a disco.

Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz

For those who prefer the beach, Puerto de la Cruz offers the beaches of San Telmo, El Muelle, Martiánez, and Jardín. Playa Jardín is a 700-metre-long stretch of black sand, and is the most tourist orientated, as it offers a wide range of service to bathers.

Away from the coast, at the highest point of the city, lies one of Puerto de la Cruz’s undisputed treasures, its  Botanical Gardens . Located in Calle de la Retama, it was built on the orders of Carlos III in 1788.  It contains some very old specimens, including a 150-year-old mamey.  Other trees to be found here are of a colossal size, such as the well-known Lord Howe fig tree, which measures 40 metres in diameter.

The popular Plaza del Charco , Castillo de San Felipe (now a cultural centre) and the historic Casa de Aduana [Customs House], Casa de Tomás Iriarte and Casa Franchy, are other attractions open to visitors in Puerto de la Cruz.

The best way to travel to  La Laguna  is by the tram service that departs from Santa Cruz. Or the other way around.  The two cities are close together, and complement each other. La Laguna is a university city with an aristocratic, colonial ambience.  Large mansions stand alongside more modest houses with highly colourful doors and windows.  It is worth going for a stroll around the city’s main streets:   San Agustín, Obispo Rey Redondo , and the most commercial street, Herradores .

In La Laguna’s historic quarter , which was declared a Cultural Asset and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, time really seems to have stood still. As you walk around the city, you will be able to pick out the features of Canary Island architecture. And you will marvel at these beautiful buildings steeped in history. You will feel as if you have been transported back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as you gaze at these magnificent edifices, including the Casa de la Alhóndiga , the  Casa de los Capitanes Generales , the  Casa del Corregidor ,  Casa Osuna  and the simpler  Casa Granero .

San Cristóbal de La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna

Every visitor to La Laguna should see the Cathedral, which stands in Plaza de los Remedios , as well as the Convent of San Agustín and the church known as the Iglesia de la Concepción . Then when you need a rest, direct your steps towards Plaza del Adelantado . This square is very near the Town Hall, the Municipal Market and the Hermitage of San Miguel Arcángel. It is a popular social meeting place for the locals.

The Museum of History and Anthropology is also worth a visit; it is housed in the lovely Lercaro Palace. Then there’s  Fundación Cristino de Vera . Here, the aura of mysticism that characterises this Canary Island artist’s work seems to permeate the whole atmosphere of the building. The city has an abundance of charming little squares, streets, and secret magical nooks and crannies waiting to be explored.

A harmonious coexistence prevails between La Laguna’s stately past and its current function as a university city. The prestigious University of La Laguna contributes to the city’s rich cultural climate. There are very well-known writers’ haunts, such as as El Ateneo. And theatres with an illustrious tradition, such as the Leal. And lots of taverns, restaurants and bars where visitors can enjoy spending an hour or two. The nightlife here is vibrant, as in any student city. Past and present, ancient and modern, all co-exist in harmony in this corner of north-west Tenerife.

Los Cristianos  is another of southern Tenerife’s most popular tourist resorts. The beach of the same name is characterised by the brilliantly colourful boats anchored there. The beach has always been much loved by families living on the island, as has the beach of Las Vistas . The latter is much longer, stretching for almost a kilometre, and has shallow waters.

Once upon a time, Los Cristianos was a fishing village. The centre expanded to accommodate the growing numbers of tourists, but here and there it still retains something of its original seafaring character. The heart of Los Cristianos is its pedestrianised promenade which runs alongside the beaches, packed with bars, restaurants and snack bars. In the evening, its lively atmosphere puts it on a par with Las Americas in terms of nightlife.

Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos

Another popular social hub is the port area, Puerto de Los Cristianos . It lies to the west of South Tenerife Reina Sofia Airport. From the port, visitors can take fishing trips, cetacean-spotting excursions and diving trips. Also from here, the ferries depart for the neighbouring islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. The nearest attractions include Monkey Park zoo and Aqualand.

La Orotava is an exquisite town in Northern Tenerife. It is always a great pleasure to walk along its cobbled streets, admiring its old mansions.  The town’s famous wooden balconies, so typical of Canary Island architecture, are an undisputed symbol of La Orotava’s identity.  There are many churches worth visiting in this corner of Tenerife, which transports the traveller back in time to the conquest of the island, during the reign of Spain’s Catholic monarchs.

During the festival of Corpus Christi , local people make carpets of flowers. They cover the pavements, and are famous for their combination of petals and volcanic sand. This is a perfect time to take a leisurely walk around the town, but at any time of the year this is a spellbinding place to visit.

La Orotava’s historic quarter , which has been declared a National Historic-Artistic Site, has been remarkably successful in preserving its historic buildings. Here, just as in La Laguna, time seems to have stood still. Among the many places of interest, the Iglesia de la Concepción is one you should not miss. This is a splendid edifice, with its Baroque façade, original towers and majestic cupola. Inside you will find important religious pieces dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

La Orotava

Another of the town’s most famous buildings is the  Casa de los Balcones [House of Balconies], a remarkable, traditional mansion which is now home to the Centro de Investigación de Artesanía de Europa y América [European and American Centre for Research into Crafts]. The complex, built during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, has magnificent balconies (hence its name), and an inner courtyard of carved wood.

It is very pleasurable to spend some time wandering in the peaceful, relaxing Victoria de la Orotava Gardens . They are also known as the Marquesado de la Quinta Roja Gardens. They were designed by the French artist Adolph Coquet  in the nineteenth century. They have a very unusual structure, set out in tiered terraces. They have a large number of beautiful fountains, set among brightly-coloured flowers. From the highest point of the gardens, visitors can enjoy impressive views over the island.

Costa Adeje ’s star attractions are its beaches, its water parks, and the opportunity to play golf, go diving or go cetacean spotting. But it is also worth venturing into the town that has given its name to the tourist resort.  This town on the south of the island has an interesting historical heritage.  It also boasts natural spaces that are sure to impress, including the Barranco del Infierno [Hell’s Gorge]and the Caldera del Rey .

So there are endless attractions that lead people to choose  Adeje  as their holiday destination. Along 26 kilometres of coastline, there are 14 beaches and coves.  Tourists can opt for large, busy bathing areas, such as Playa del Duque, Playa de Fañabé, Playa de Torviscas, or Playa de la Pinta.  But the coastline also offers more isolated, peaceful spots, including Playa Los Morteros and Las Salinas.

Costa Adeje

Costa Adeje

The choice of hotels and apartments (and of places to eat) along Costa Adeje is enormous. Like its neighbour Las Américas, it offers a packed programme of sport and leisure options. One highlight is Siam Park , an impressive water park that is sure to delight children and adults alike. The opportunities for diving are also one of the area’s great attractions. Its lovely coastline, home to over 500 species of fish and other sea creatures, attracts thousands of visitors to its many diving centres.

Villa de Adeje has a long history dating back to the times before the Christian conquest, when the island was dominated by the Guanches. For that reason, the area has a fascinating historic and artistic heritage. Among the most appealing monuments is the Church of Santa Úrsula . This was built on the site of a primitive sixteenth-century hermitage. Also intriguing are the ruins of Casa Fuerte , a fortified dwelling at the entrance to the town, built to defend it against the frequent pirate attacks.

Icod de los Vinos, in the shade of the millennial Dragon Tree

Icod de los Vinos  is a small town in the North of the island, famous for its Millennial Dragon tree, the world’s oldest known tree. It is 17 metres tall, and its trunk weighs 65 tonnes.  It has stood up well to the passage of time, and resembles a kind of natural sculpture which everyone is keen to visit.  A park has been built around this legendary tree with other plant species native to the island.  It is this area’s main attraction.

But there is much more to see in Icod de los Vinos, a place known for its excellent soups. Its monuments include the magnificent Convent of San Francisco . Dating from the seventeenth-century, and built in the Portuguese rococo style, it includes the remarkable Chapel of Los Dolores. And the late eighteenth-century, neoclassical Casa Lorenzo-Cáceres . Nowadays, this is used as a Music Centre, and an exhibition space.

Icod de los Vinos

Icod de los Vinos

In the town itself, the Guanche Museum makes for an interesting visit.  As does the  Mariposario [butterfly park], home to over 800 tropical butterflies, from around 150 different species. It is important, too, not to forget the Cueva del Viento . This is a huge volcanic tube formed around 27,000 years ago.  Within it live approximately 190 species of plants, animals and fungi.

3. THE BEST PLACES TO BATHE AND SWIM IN TENERIFE

El Médano , in the municipality of  Granadilla de Abona , is another popular tourism hub in southern Tenerife. This stretch of coastline has a distinct character, with its wild, bleak appearance.  Here you will find Médano beach , one of the island’s longest beaches, and a genuine surfers’ paradise along those stretches where the swell is at its strongest. This is the area’s best-known beach, but you could also go for a swim off coves such as El Cabezo, El Salado and La Jaquita.

Further away from the town, and also more rugged, is the beautiful  Montaña Roja beach , just at the foot of the volcano, and the  beach of Tejita , the most remote beach of all, separated from the rest by the imposing bulk of the mountain. The beach is dominated by the imposing silhouette of the Montaña Roja volcano.  This 171-metre-high volcano is the visible part of a natural reserve covering 166 hectares, and inhabited by protected birds including the Kentish Plover.  This particular species has disappeared from other coastal areas of the island, due to the changes in ecosystems caused by tourism.  This is an ideal place to undertake simple hiking trails. Its peacefulness and the scenery is the reward that awaits any traveller who wants to leave behind the noise and bustle of the city.

El Médano

Playa El Médano

Los Realejos, history and nature

Los Realejos  another of North Tenerife’s most stunningly beautiful areas. Here, the loveliness of the scenery is combined with a rich historic and artistic heritage.  It is 41 kilometres from the capital city, in the midst of the fertile Valle de la Orotava.  A good part of the area’s 57 square kilometres is protected by various environmental laws.  And its two historic quarters (Realejo Alto and Realejo Bajo — which merged in the mid-twentieth century) hold the status of Assets of Cultural Interest.

In the town’s network of steeply climbing streets, visitors will stumble across many points of interest. In Realejo Alto, the town centre located furthest from the coast, stands the house where the writer Viera y Clavijo was born in 1731. Nowadays, the building houses the town’s public library. This famous house shares the square with the Iglesia Matriz de Santiago Apóstol.

And in Realejo Bajo, you will find another architectural jewel, the Hacienda de los Príncipes. It was built in the fifteenth century by the first governor of Tenerife, Alonso Fernández de Lugo. Around it stand other interesting edifices, but if what you’re looking for is natural scenery, you will not be disappointed.

Playa Los Realejos

Los Realejos

Attractive viewing points and wild beaches await you in this area.  Playa del Socorro and Playa de la Fajana are both impressive beaches.  And the protected area of Rambla de Castro is simply glorious. The area is well stocked with Canary Island palm trees, tabaibales and dragon trees.

Travelling down towards the sea, you will find the Hermitage of San Pedro , built on top of a cliff during the eighteenth century. Another surprising discovery is the Castro mansion , a former sixteenth-century farmstead, which has been converted into a visitor centre. Further down stands the Fortín de San Pedro a splendid example of a defensive fortress built to thwart attacks by pirates during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Playa de las Américas, fun beside the sea

Playa de las Américas  lies between the  municipalities of Arona and Adeje , in the south of Tenerife. The beach shares its name with the tourist resort as whole, a popular holiday destination with many Europeans on a quest for some sunshine during the cold winter months. This is the ideal place if you are looking for fun, sport and entertainment for all the family.

Here the nights are for partying, but during the daytime the main attraction are the beaches with their golden sands and clear waters. Las Américas is the area’s longest beach, stretching for 500 metres. But along this one-kilometre coastal strip, there are alternatives, including the beaches of Troya , La Honda , and El Camisón , lying in the midst of green areas and palm trees.

Playa de las Américas

Playa de las Américas

This corner of Tenerife offers an excellent range of hotels and places to eat, with shops and all kinds of services available to visitors. All this makes it a favourite destination for a holiday on the island. There is an enormous range of leisure options and water sports on offer here. These include water-skiing, windsurfing and diving. The area also has a golf course.

Las Teresitas

The  beach of Las Teresitas , located just 7 kilometres from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is a favourite among residents of the island’s capital city. This kilometre-long beach lies within the town of San Andrés.  It is a man-made beach, created during the 1970s.  Fine, white sand imported from the Sahara Desert was poured onto the original beach of volcanic sand. Thanks to its calm waters, the beach is popular with families.  In addition, very close to Las Teresitas you will find superb establishments where you can try local cuisine.

Las Teresitas

Playa Las Teresitas

Other  beaches worth exploring in Tenerife  include  Benijo beach , in the little town of Taganana, whose rugged appearance will instantly capture your heart;  Playa del Duque , on Costa Adeje, very near La Caleta, a quiet beach that can reached without straying too far from the tourist resorts, and  Los Gigantes beach , in Santiago del Teide, which lies close to the magnificent Los Gigantes cliffs. If you visit Los Gigantes, we recommend that you combine your day at the beach with a cetacean-spotting boat trip.

There are other beaches that are less easy to access, such as  Playa de Masca , in Buenavista del Norte, which is best reached from the sea; beaches perfect for surfing including  Playa La Tejita , La Fajana or Rambla de Castro; and unspoilt, almost deserted beaches such as Bollullo, with its dark-coloured sands.

Playa de Benijo

Playa de Benijo

Tenerife has so many beaches that often, the best plan is to let yourself be led by instinct, or by the advice of local people if you want to discover the best.

Every year, Instagram profiles are awash with photos of natural swimming pools  set amid wild scenery and with limpid waters. As one might expect, Tenerife has a good number of these pools. Below, we have listed five of our favourites.  Top of the list is El Caletón , in the town of Garachico. The natural swimming pools here were formed following the eruptions of the Trevejo volcano in 1706.

Charco de Isla Cangrejo , in Santiago del Teide, was created by building a concrete wall to protect the Isla Cangrejo residential development from the waves and tides. You will need to take care, as there is a powerful swell here. Also very good for bathing are the Paseo La Jaquita natural swimming pools in Guía de Isora, which are also of volcanic origin, and which afford views of La Gomera. In San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the most popular natural swimming pools are those at Punta Hidalgo . These are large, and hold a blue flag, guaranteeing the quality of the water.

Lastly, the Charco Los Chochos , in the municipality of Los Silos, is less well known, but even has steps and a handrail for ease of access. The pool takes its name from the local people’s practice of soaking lupin seeds, commonly known as “chochos” here, to take away their bitterness.

Lago Martiánez

Lago Martiánez is a leisure complex in Puerto de la Cruz, with facilities including an enormous artificial lake commanding impressive views of the sea and of Mount Teide. The lake is surrounded by swimming pools with turquoise waters, along with gardens, terraces and restaurants. Such is its beauty that it has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Historic Gardens category. A very important fact: Lago Martiánez was designed by the artist César Manrique, who planned to offer a leisure facility here for people of all ages. The complex includes several terraces, kiosks, restaurants and, since 2006, a casino.

Playa Benijo

This is one of Tenerife’s most fabulous unspoilt beaches. Lying between Roque Benijo and  Roque La Rapadura, this beautiful, wild enclave is the perfect place to daydream and feel the power of the Atlantic Ocean. Playa Benijo has black sand, and an average number of visitors during summer, with lower numbers in winter. To enjoy the beach in all its glory, it is worth waiting till low tide. Access is via a path that starts near the road; the walk takes around 15 minutes.

Camino a la playa de Benijo

Playa del Duque

This beach, which lies on South Tenerife’s tourist-orientated Costa Adeje, is a perfect place to enjoy the sun, the beach, and all kinds of services and conveniences. It is a long beach, with golden sands and clear waters. It holds the ‘blue badge’ award, and lies close to a delightful seafront promenade packed with snack bars, restaurants and fashion shops. Its point of historic interest is the Castillo del Duque, which dominates one end of the beach. This is what gave this stretch of coastline its name. This is a very safe beach for bathing, as it is protected by a breakwater that weakens the Atlantic swell.

Playa Las Galletas

At over 400 metres in length and with dark brown sand, this urban beach forms part of the little fishing town from which it takes its name: Las Galletas. It is only 15 kilometres from Playa de los Cristianos, but here you can immerse yourself in the local atmosphere and watch the fishermen at work near the jetty. You can even buy some of their fresh catch at the Fish Market. The beach is easy to access by car and offers all kinds of services and facilities: toilets, showers, litter bins, telephones, restaurants, lounger and sunshade hire, yacht club, lifeguards, etc.

Dónde dormir en Tenerife

If you want to enjoy a stay with every comfort and convenience, the best options for hotels in Tenerife are the Barceló Tenerife, the Royal Hideaway Corales Beach-Adults Only, the Allegro Isora, the Occidental Santa Cruz Contemporáneo, the Royal Hideaway Corales Suites and the Barceló Santiago.

The  Barceló Tenerife  has 331 exclusive guest rooms, and guarantees a relaxing stay in the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Facilities at the hotel include 8 fabulous outdoor swimming pools, two of which are temperature regulated, in addition to a sailing lake. All this in a fantastic location right by the sea.

The  Royal Hideaway Corales Beach-Adults Only  is on Costa Adeje, in the south-west of the island, near a town that has kept alive its traditional ways: La Caleta.  This is considered one of Spain’s 25 finest hotels, and was designed in the shape of a boat by the architect Leonardo Omar. Every one of its luxury rooms faces the sea.  Next to it, the  Royal Hideaway Corales Suites  offers 114 designer apartments close to La Enramada beach. Here, guests can enjoy a designer holiday with every possible comfort as a family, with friends or as a couple.

The  Allegro Isora  has 312 apartments on a site covering over 21,000 m2, close to the La Arena beach. The hotel has a superb buffet restaurant, un lounge-bar and a pool bar, in addition to ideal facilities for children, along with an entertainment programme.  There is also a modern U-Wellness and fitness centre.

The  Occidental Santa Cruz Contemporáneo  is situated in the most exclusive part of the Rambla de Santa Cruz, very close to the city’s historic quarter. The hotel has a fantastic swimming pool with a solarium, perfect for enjoying the Canary Island sun, and a wide range of cuisine on offer in its Alfredo Restaurant.

The  Barceló Santiago , located in the south of Tenerife, affords stunning views of La Gomera and of the Los Gigantes cliffs, and its guest rooms overlook the sea, the swimming pools or Mount Teide.  Lovers of good food will enjoy an exceptional gastronomic experience, ranging from traditional cuisine to international and exotic dishes.  The perfect accommodation if you’re looking to disconnect from your daily routine.

10 Must-See Places in Tenerife On Your First Trip

If you’re visiting the island for the first time, you shouldn’t miss these must-see places in Tenerife. However, you may find some cool spots even if you’re already familiar with the island.

I spent nearly two months combined in Tenerife during my two trips to the Canary Islands. This has become one of my favorite places to escape European winter. With pleasant temperatures year-round, charming small towns, great beaches, and spectacular nature, Tenerife is an enchanting island everyone should visit at least once.

I had the chance to explore nearly every place on the island, so I thought I would create a list of the must-see places in Tenerife. This is not an exhaustive list of everything worth visiting on the island, but it’s a good start for first-timers. If you have already been to Tenerife, you may have visited all these places, but you may still find a few new ones. However, stay tuned for another article coming soon with more off-the-beaten-path places.

Puerto de la Cruz

A few tips for your trip to Tenerife

Before diving into the 10 top places to visit in Tenerife, I want to give you a few tips. First of all, I highly recommend visiting the island in winter. The temperatures are ideal for hiking and sightseeing (around 20-22°C), and you may even spend some time at the beach.

Secondly – and this is another reason to fly to Tenerife in winter – you can easily find affordable flights from many European cities. I usually use Skyscanner to find cheap flights. Check it out!

Thirdly, Tenerife has amazing public transportation. Even if you don’t want to rent a car, you can easily get around by bus (or guagua, as the locals call it). Check titsa.com for all routes and fees, and be sure to get a rechargeable ticket as soon as you arrive. You can top it up in many places across the island and easily get around.

Lastly, book your accommodation in advance. The island is a popular destination even during winter months. Plus, the carnival in February draws lots of visitors, so you want to plan ahead of time if you want to experience it. Choose a bigger city as your base if you’re going to move around by bus. Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, and Costa Adeje are all great options. I prefer staying in the north, but the south is better if you want to spend more time at the beach. I book most of my accommodation through Booking.com .

Okay, now it’s time to get into my list of the ten must-see places in Tenerife!

Tenerife, Canary Islands

Let’s kick off this list with an obvious but necessary place, the island’s vibrant capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Although I think natural landscapes are worth visiting more than any city in Tenerife, you can’t skip at least half a day in the capital.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a cool city with a rich cultural heritage and many activities for every type of traveler. Explore the charming old town and the iconic Plaza de España, visit the many museums and art galleries, and wonder at the impressive Auditorio de Tenerife.

If you happen to visit Tenerife around February, which I highly recommend, you can experience one of the world’s biggest and most famous carnivals. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the second-most important carnival after the one in Rio de Janeiro.

If you plan on spending more than a week in Tenerife, I recommend spending a couple of days in Santa Cruz. However, if you’re short on time, there are many other amazing places to visit, so one day would be enough.

Audittorium, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

No trip to Tenerife would be complete without hiking around the Teide National Park. With 3,715 meters in height, Mount Teide is Spain’s highest peak. The area surrounding the volcano became a national park in 1954, and in 2007, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Being one of the top attractions in Tenerife, you have several options to visit Mount Teide. Firstly, you can explore Teide National Park independently by car or bus (Guagua). Catch bus 342 from Costa Adeje or 348 from Puerto de la Cruz. Check out the schedules and stops on  titsa.com .

Once you’re in the park, you can hit the hiking trails or  catch the cable car  to the peak, or near the peak, to be precise. You need a special permit to hike to the summit of Mount Teide. To obtain this, you can either book the official  Mount Teide Peak Experience  or request a free permit on the  government’s national parks website  to hike up by yourself.

Note that limited permits are available (200 per day divided between the general public and park guides), and they sell fast. You will need to book these two to three months in advance.

Teide National Park, Must-see in Tenerife

Get a guided tour

If you don’t necessarily want to hike to the summit or visit the park independently, you can join one of the many guided group tours. This  Mount Teide Tour with Cable Car Ticket & Transfer  offers departures from multiple places across the island. This way, you can also get to meet new people. While I didn’t personally join this tour, it’s one of the best options online.

I visited the park by bus once and by car a second time. If you go by bus, there are multiple stops, so you can get off at the visitor center, go on a hike, and catch the bus back at a different stop. This is what I did on my first time to Mount Teide. No matter how you choose to tackle it, make sure not to miss this must-see spot in Tenerife.

One piece of advice I can give you is to choose a clear day. While the weather in Tenerife is subject to swift changes, try to avoid hazy or cloudy days. The clouds tend to gather around the peak, so you risk getting up there and not even seeing the volcano. Of course, this is hard if you want to book a tour in advance, but it’s doable if you have a flexible schedule.

Teide National Park

Garachico was one of my favorite small towns in Tenerife so I would say it’s a must-see. The charming coastal town offers a glimpse into the island’s past with its cobbled streets, picturesque squares, and beautiful architecture.

Garachico lies at the foot of the Arenas Negras Volcano. In 1706, a huge eruption partially destroyed the town and reshaped the bay. From the ancient harbor area, only the San Miguel Castle and the Puerta de Tierra survived the disaster.

Garachico is small, so you can easily visit it in just a couple of hours. Stroll along the seaside promenade, stop by one of the many traditional restaurants, wander around the charming historical center, and maybe go for a swim in the natural pools of El Caletón. Lastly, walk to Mirador del Emigrante to enjoy a beautiful view of the town from above.

Garachico, Must-see in Tenerife

If you’re looking for hiking areas in Tenerife, Anaga Rural Park is one of the best. The protected area occupies the northeastern part of Tenerife, and the Macizo de Anaga mountain range became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2015.

The area is covered in lush laurel forests, with rugged cliffs providing sweeping views of the surrounding valleys. Anaga Rural Park has lots of hiking trails. One reason I love it is that, except for a few extremely popular spots, you can enjoy some peace. Choose one of the less popular hikes to immerse yourself in the serenity of the forest but be sure to check some of the popular spots too.

Mirador Pico del Inglés, Camino Viejo al Pico del Inglès, Mirador De Jardina, and El Bailadero are some spots you shouldn’t miss. The great thing is that you can reach the area by bus. Line 273 departs from San Cristóbal de La Laguna and will get you to Mirador Pico del Inglés.

Anaga Rural Park, Tenerife

Nestled between towering cliffs, Masca Valley is a hidden gem awaiting your discovery. Despite being quite remote, Masca Valley is among the must-see places to visit in Tenerife.

A trip to the Masca Valley feels like a trip back in time. The village of Masca consists of a handful of houses and a few restaurants looking over the staggering cliffs, which offer glimpses of the ocean.

Hike around the impressive valley and take in the wild beauty of this place. Unfortunately, reaching Masca Valley is not exactly easy without a car. You can catch bus 355 or 365 from Buenavista del Norte. However, unless you’re staying in Buenavista, you also need to keep into account the trip to get there, which is 1.5 hours from Puerto de la Cruz.

If you can’t rent a car, probably the easiest way to visit Masca Valley is on a guided tour. Get Your Guide has a  Teide and Masca Valley Tour  from Puerto de la Cruz, while  Viator has a similar tour  from the south.

Masca Valley, must-see in Tenerife

Puerto de la Cruz is the most important city on Tenerife’s northern coast, known for its lovely beaches, bustling promenades, and lively historical center. Although Santa Cruz is the island’s capital, Puerto de la Cruz was the first place to welcome tourists to the island. If you ask me, I much prefer Puerto de la Cruz to Santa Cruz.

The city has a charming historical center with little squares and colonial buildings, a buzzing seaside promenade along the beautiful Costa Martiánez, and charming parks and gardens like Sitio Litre and Parque Taoro. Furthermore, you’ll find many cozy cafés and traditional restaurants.

While visiting Puerto, don’t forget to check out the iconic Agatha Christie steps, the sweeping views from Mirador La Paz, and the lovely Playa del Castillo. Lastly, you can visit the famous Loro Parque.

Puerto de la Cruz

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is one of the most important cities in Tenerife and another must-see. The former capital of the Canary Islands, La Laguna, as it’s commonly known, was the first city to be established in Tenerife. Its historical center became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

La Laguna is the place to go to admire the charming colonial architecture, learn about the island’s history, and visit beautiful churches. The city is home to the impressive Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and the historic Iglesia-Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción, the first parish in Tenerife.

Wander through the colorful streets lined with colonial buildings, indulge in local culinary delights at the traditional restaurants, and visit interesting museums like Casa Museo Cayetano Gómez Felipe or the Museum of the History of Tenerife.

I spent an entire week in La Laguna, and I believe it’s one of the best places to base yourself in the north of Tenerife. The city has easy access to the two major cities of Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz and connections to the Anaga Rural Park. At the same time, it’s not as crowded as the other two cities and has more of a small-town vibe.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna

If you want to bask in the sun, go swimming, and simply relax at the beach, your best bet is to stay in the south of Tenerife. Los Cristianos is one of the most popular towns in the area, known for its many hotels, long sandy beaches, and a variety of local and international restaurants.

Los Cristianos is also the place to go if you want to experience the island’s nightlife. Before becoming the popular tourist hub it is today, Los Cristianos was a quaint fishing village. Unlike other nearby places like Playa de las Americas, it has history, despite it being overlooked in favor of the big hotels, popular beaches, and lively bars.

If you want my two cents on Los Cristianos, I’d say it’s worth a visit, but I wouldn’t spend much time there. There is so much more to be discovered across the island. That being said, if you are looking for a relaxing holiday made of sun, sea, and cocktails with some live music in the evening, then Los Cristianos or nearby Playa de las Americas is the place to be.

Los Cristianos, Tenerife

Another must-see in Tenerife is Los Gigantes, which translates to The Giants. These dramatic cliffs on the western coast of Tenerife are one of the most magnificent things you’ll see on the island. At the time of the Guanches (Tenerife’s indigenous inhabitants), the cliffs were known as the “Wall of Hell” (Muralla del Infierno) or “Devil’s Wall” (Muralla del Diablo).

The vertical cliffs emerge from the ocean and stand at impressive heights between 300 and 600 meters. The interesting thing is that the sea level is very low at the foot of these cliffs. Given the difficult access, the submarine area has a rich ecosystem and is ideal for diving.

If you want to see Los Gigantes up close, you can join one of the many boat tours sailing past the impressive cliffs. These tours are great for spotting marine life too, like dolphins, pilot whales, and sea turtles. This  Whale Watching Cruise by Sail Boat  is one of the most popular tours in the area.

You can easily reach Los Gigantes from many places in the south of Tenerife, like Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje, and from Puerto de la Cruz. If you can’t join a boat tour, you can admire the magnificent cliffs from many viewpoints around the resort town of Los Gigantes.

Los Gigantes. must-see in Tenerife

One last place I want to include on this list of must-see places in Tenerife is Icod de los Vinos. The charming town on the northwestern coast of Tenerife is better known for being the home of the island’s oldest Dragon Tree, known as Drago Milenario or simply El Drago.

Some say El Drago is a thousand years old, while others believe it can’t be older than 700 years. Regardless of its exact age, this impressive tree is a unique sight. Furthermore, El Drago is so important for the island’s locals that a whole park was built around it. This is obviously the main attraction in Icod de los Vinos.

The town offers quite a few other things to do. You can stroll around the lovely historical center and check out the architecture, stop by one of the many local restaurants, go shopping in small local stores, and even visit a small banana plantation and museum, Casa del Plátano. Lastly, Icod is home to a beautiful tropical garden housing over 800 butterflies, Mariposario del Drago.

Icod de los Vinos

I hope you enjoyed this list of must-see places in Tenerife. Feel free to share your favorites in the comments and let me know what other places you think nobody should miss on the island!

Top 10 Attractions in Tenerife

1. Teide National Park

No visit to the island is complete without at least a drive through the pine forests to the bizarre lunar landscape of one of Spain's most popular national parks. And of course, once there, you can't miss the big pointy thing jutting into the sky. That's the volcano. Not just any volcano though, Mount Teide is the world's third largest. Take the cable car to the top for a God-like view of the surrounding islands.

2. Siam Park

Not a natural attraction admittedly, but still one that shouldn't be missed. Named as one of the best 10 water parks in the world, if you like your thrills and spills wet, you have just got to go to this Thai-themed water park with loads of scream-inducing rides and slides, a gigantic wave pool complete with gold sand beach, and a mini-aquatic park just for kids. Book the Siam Park now.

Tenerife's very own Shangri-la. This picturesque village cligns precariously to the side of the mountains in the north-west of Tenerife, hidden from the rest of civilisation and looking very much like it did centuries ago. A switchback road corksrews up and down to the the village from Santiago del Teide, so if you're of a nervous disposition you might want to close your eyes (not if you're the driver obviously).

4. Whales and dolphins

The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are one of the few places in the world where you are pretty much guaranteed to spot the resident population of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins. Hop on a Tenerife whales and dolphins boat excursion or if you want to get really up-close-and-personal go to our Tenerife excursions page where you can book a mind-blowing dolphin encounter at the dolphinarium in Aqualand.

5. The cliffs of Los Gigantes

I dare you to view the cliffs of Los Gigantes and not be gobsmacked. Plunging an impressive 1600 feet into the Atlantic, this curtain of stone lining the northwest corner of Tenerife are absolutely stunning. The best way to see them is by boat, although they're also mighty damned impressive from one of the quayside bars with glass of frosty beer in hand too.

6. Garachico

7. Pyramids of Güímar

8. Loro Parque

9. Anaga Mountains

10. Botanical Gardens

12 Prettiest Towns in Tenerife to Visit (or Stay in) on Your Trip

With so many beautiful places that you can find on each corner, it can be difficult to understand which towns in Tenerife to visit on a trip. Some are quite popular and pop up in all guides while others may seem to be unknown and not worth discovering when looking on the map.

I visited the majority of towns in both southern and northern Tenerife and fell in love with the number of them to such an extent that decided to write this post about the best towns in Tenerife from my own perspective. In the end, I also include them all on a map.

So take a look and get inspired. Several towns from this list are great not only for a quick visit but also for a stay since they have nice accommodation options and easy access to activities.

And for the most authentic experience , rent a car in Tenerife and go on a slow road trip around the island making a stop in each of these most beautiful towns and spending some time there exploring their streets!

Most Beautiful Towns in Northern Tenerife

I want to start my list of the best towns to visit in Tenerife with towns in the northern part of the island. As I am based in the north, I think this is absolutely a unique and gorgeous region to explore!

La Orotava – Heritage Town

Corpus Christi festival in La Orotava

La Orotava could not stay out of this list. It is undeniably a gem among all the nicest towns in Tenerife. Situated in the green and lush Orotava Valley with ancient colonial architecture and vibrant floral displays, this town exudes a unique charm that captivates visitors from near and far. Its cute narrow streets create a mysterious ambiance that transports you to another era.

One of the most striking features of La Orotava and one of the reasons to visit this town is its well-preserved historical center . Strolling through the cobblestone streets opens up a few striking mansions with intricately carved wooden balconies and colorful facades . These architectural treasures are a true testament to the La Orotava’s rich heritage that offers a glimpse into its colonial past.

When you get to the town, go to the main square Plaza de la Constitucion , a focal point of charm and elegance. Surrounded by colorful buildings, with a beautiful fountain and vibrant flowers with plants, it adds a burst of color and enhances the overall allure of the town.

Don’t miss the garden Jardin de la Quinta Roja with a perfect landscape. It showcases a variety of indigenous and exotic flora, creating a tranquil oasis in the heart of the town. On the premises of the garden and around La Orotava, you’ll find some breathtaking panoramic views (among the best views in Tenerife ) from various vantage points.

On top of everything, to finish the list, La Orotava is rich in cultural events (truly those that are worth visiting!). It hosts traditional festivals and celebrations throughout the year, where locals proudly showcase their customs, music, and gastronomy.

No matter when you travel to Tenerife, I suggest you check the calendar of events. There is always something going on in La Orotava and you may not even know about it.

If you are coming to Tenerife around Easter, don’t miss Semana Santa celebrations . When visiting in June , go to The Corpus Christi festival. This event is a very unique (one of its kind) thing to see in Tenerife which is all about the vibrant floral carpets adorning the streets.

Should You Stay in La Orotava Town?

La Orotava is a good place to stay in Tenerife if you want to have an active holiday and be in one of the oldest towns with colonial architecture. I wouldn’t be staying here during the entire length of your vacation but for a night or two is a very unique experience.

Its central location provides convenient access to various attractions, including the Teide National Park, Puerto de la Cruz (which is overcrowded with tourists), nearby beaches, and other towns that are on this list.

Look into Hotel Alhambra which is a good example of a luxurious Canarian home or Pension Silene guesthouse on a budget.

El Sauzal – Historic Town With Dramatic Views

El Sauzal views

One of the other prettiest towns in Tenerife you want to visit is El Sauzal, a lesser-known destination with dramatic views and incredible sunsets. I didn’t see it on any list in any guide but discovered this gem on my own when living in Tacoronte next to this town.

El Sauzal is the town and capital of the municipality with the same name. It received its name from the willow tree as a large number of Canarian willow trees grow here.

Archaeologists who have excavated this territory unveiled compelling evidence of El Sauzal’s historical significance prior to the Spanish conquest as they discovered twelve intricately designed Guanche caves. Following the conquest, El Sauzal emerged as the vibrant political and administrative hub of the island with the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle becoming a prestigious residence of Tenerife’s esteemed ruler (it was converted into a church later).

Once you visit and stroll through the town’s streets, you will surely notice how old buildings are and that many of them look like hiding lots of history behind their walls.

This cute Tenerife town offers a multitude of reasons to visit and explore its charming surroundings. I’d say that you have to come here to walk through the flower alleys that offer a view of beautiful colorful Canarian houses, go down to one (or all) observation deck , which offers gorgeous views.

one of the prettiest towns in Tenerife

In fact, what makes El Sauzal unique apart from its picturesque corners is its location, which opens up incredible panoramic views on all sides. Since the town is located on a cliff, it becomes a natural viewing platform from which you can enjoy views of the Volcano Teide, the La Orotava Valley, and the Atlantic Ocean with Puerto de la Cruz on the horizon.

After long walks, stop for coffee or hamburguesa in one of the cafes, go on a scenic hike, to the House of Wine , and stay longer for the sunset .

I invite you to read my mini guide to El Sauzal to discover all its charming hideaways and best things to do.

Should You Stay in El Sauzal Town?

El Sauzal is a fantastic town where to stay for expats and people who move to Tenerife for a longer period of time. But on a short vacation and when you are visiting the island for the first time, it is not the best pick in terms of accommodation.

On Airbnb there are a few nice flats in El Sauzal which are great for at least a one month stay.

Bajamar – Town of Big Waves & Pools

Bajamar town views

From El Sauzal, I suggest you take the road TF-16 to go north to the next beautiful town in northern Tenerife called Bajamar. On the way there, you’ll get to drive through Tacoronte, Valle de Guerra, and Tejina looking through the window of your car at other smaller towns and villages.

Bajamar is very different from El Sauzal as it is situated along the coast and known for a few of its lovely (but different in nature) pools . Besides them, it also boasts impressive coastal scenery with dramatic cliffs and rugged rock formations with volcanic rocks along the coastline . It’s an ideal place for nature lovers and photographers, offering plenty of picturesque spots to capture moments.

If you get to visit Tenerife in winter, you should come to Bajamar for the largest waves on the island . Being exposed to the open Atlantic Ocean and having a deep ocean floor near the coast leads to larger swells and more powerful waves along its shores in the winter. This makes Bajamar a popular destination for surfers and photographers who love the thrill of big waves.

Overall, you should come to Bajamar for the scenery! It is very different from any other city, town, or village in Tenerife.

And then of course make a stop at one of the local seafood restaurants or local eateries as they offer freshly caught fish and seafood dishes.

Should You Stay in Bajamar?

Similar to El Sauzal, Bajamar is also a good town where to live as an expat or digital nomad. It has some beautiful homes for rent in close proximity to the sea.

Alternatively, if you are on a road trip around the island and don’t have one long-term base, Bajamar can be a good place where to stay for a night before moving to the next destination.

There are not really any hotels in Bajamar but some privately owned casas or seafront apartments. Take a look at them here .

Punta del Hidalgo – Gateway to the Sea & Mountains

Punta del Hidalgo town streets

Next to Bajamar, less than 3 km away lies another town which is a fantastic place to visit in Tenerife. It also has a cool swimming pool among the mountains and jaw-dropping views.

Generally, Punta del Hidalgo is famous for the hiking and nature trails , particularly the one that starts by Mirador Punta del Hidalgo and goes through the rugged mountains to Chinamada village (famous for cave houses in some ways similar to those in Cappadocia ).

But besides them, there is also a coastal trail that goes from the town to a small chapel right here and passes by a recent project Punta de Hidalgo lighthouse .

For the best experience if you don’t plan to go hiking, I suggest you come to this town in the early evening to walk around it and possibly spend some time by the pool.

And afterward, take this scenic coastal trail to the lighthouse and chapel , not missing all the information boards along the way. They provide interesting details about the area, migrating birds, and marine megafauna in this part of the island. Very interesting!

Is Punta del Hidalgo a Nice Town Where to Stay?

Unlike the previous two towns, Punta del Hidalgo is a nice place to stay in northern Tenerife to disconnect from the world and be in a unique place on the island.

There are a few nice hotels here with close access to the natural pools and restaurants. Every time I was coming here after a long day of work, every time I was seeing how many Spanish tourists were choosing this town.

Atlantis Park Resort is a very popular hotel here. But for a truly special stay, choose Papayya Cottage with mountain views and eco and sustainable approach in close proximity to all hiking spots.

Candelaria – Tenerife Town of Cultural Significance & Guanche Presence

Candelaria town in Tenerife

Candelaria, in the northeastern part of Tenerife, also deserves its place among the most beautiful towns on the island due to its irresistible charm and rich cultural significance.

One of the town’s most prominent attractions is the Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria . It stands as a testament to the deep-rooted religious devotion of the Canary Islands and its hallowed walls hold the revered statue of the Virgin of Candelaria, who is the patron saint of the archipelago.

Pilgrims and travelers from far and wide flock to this sacred site, seeking solace, inspiration, and a connection to the rich spiritual heritage of the Canarian people.

When you make a stop here, park outside the old town area and walk towards the Basilica along the coastal road in this way discovering a deep appreciation for the indigenous Guanche culture that once thrived on the islands. Monuments and statues paying homage to the Guanches dot the town, offering glimpses into their mysterious and vibrant past.

Legends whisper that it was in Candelaria where the Guanche leaders and their sacred idols were unearthed, forever linking the town to this ancient civilization. So walk around and feel the echoes of history resonating through the streets.

Beyond its cultural significance, Candelaria also boasts a few beautiful black sand beaches . Playa de Candelaria  and Playa de Punta Larga with their velvety dark sands, provide a striking contrast against the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can bask in the sun and listen to the rhythmic lullaby of the waves. The black sand and rugged beauty of the coastline are a constant reminder of the volcanic origins that shaped Tenerife.

Should You Stay in Candelaria?

As a tourist, I wouldn’t be staying in Candelaria unless this is a returning trip to Tenerife and you want a new location. Another reason to stay here if you are on a budget and traveling by car while on a road trip.

Other than that, this town is a nice pick for that time when you come to live in Tenerife and want to be in close proximity to the capital city Santa Cruz.

Icod de los Vinos – Town of Banana Plantations, Wine & Oldest Tree

cute Tenerife town Icod de los Vinos

Icod de los Vinos is a typical Canarian town with old streets with snow-white houses with carved balconies in the traditional colonial style , several churches, and a cute small picturesque square. The town is small, so it seems at first that you can get around it in an hour or two.

While it is true to some extent, let me tell you that Icod de los Vinos holds a significant place as one of the island’s most important and oldest towns. And it offers quite a few activities from the list of the best things to do in northern Tenerife . So you may end up spending there half a day at least.

Its strategic location near the coast and fertile lands made it an important center for agriculture, particularly banana plantations and vineyards. This is why the production of exquisite wines and banana cultivation are quite big here.

When visiting, it is an absolute must to go to a banana plantation in the center of the town like Casa del Platano and stop for banana (cacti and other fruit) wine tasting in locals shops. Fruit wines that are made here are very similar to wines I tried in Sirince village in Turkey but some are truly authentic (like melon and papaya wine).

Also, don’t leave without seeing the iconic El Drago Milenario , a thousand-year-old dragon tree that stands as a symbol of the Icod de las Vinos resilience and natural beauty. This ancient tree is a living testament to the town’s deep-rooted connection with its environment and is considered one of the oldest and largest trees in the world.

El Drago Milenario oldest tree in the world

Is Icod de los Vinos a Good Town Where to Stay?

It can be a good place to stay in Tenerife if you enjoy a quieter setting and want to be in a traditional Canarian town with convenient access to nearby attractions.

Note that Icod de los Vinos, even though being one of the most popular tourist destinations, doesn’t have big hotels and resorts. But it is full of rural-style hotels and heritage homes like Hotel Emblematico San Agustin or Hotel Emblematico San Marcus . This is why you get a very homey feeling and authenticity.

This town is also a wonderful pick for where to stay in Tenerife for budget travelers who want to visit Teno Mountains and see in depth places in northern Tenerife.

Garachico – Town Rebuilt on Volcanic Ash

Garachico town from above

Garachico is not just a nice town in Tenerife. It is one of the most historic and epoch-making places as well as one of the main cultural and historical centers in Tenerife.

After getting here, you’ll feel a sharp contrast with the popular southern resort towns. The atmosphere here is most reminiscent of Spain of the Iberian Peninsula rather than the Canary Islands.

Garachico is a reborn town from the 18th century, which was rebuilt on frozen lava . Historical buildings here have been restored during the 18th and 19th centuries after the eruption of the Trevejo volcano in 1706 and many of them have info boards telling their story.

The architecture of the Garachico looks like hundreds of years ago with many shops that outwardly do not look like them, merging with the architecture of the old town. The narrow streets of the town look very romantic and invite for leisurely walks with a camera.

Within the city borders, you’ll find famous volcanic swimming pools that stand as tranquil sanctuaries. Each pool offers a distinct character and serves great for swimming and sunbathing.

Should You Stay in Garachico?

Garachico is a wonderful town to consider for your stay in Tenerife that provides a delightful combination of history, natural scenery, and tranquility. Similar to Icod de los Vinos, it doesn’t have big resorts or spa & wellness hotels but is bustling with traditional Canarian homes and boutique properties.

You should especially consider staying here when on a road trip around Tenerife.

Look into unique properties like Hotel LIVVO in the town center or something more modern and with sea views like Casa Canaria Asera .

Best Towns to Visit in Tenerife South

Southern Tenerife also has a few really nice and pretty towns. The majority of them are too touristy and were designed for tourists. So below I mention those that are quiet and inviting and offer a beautiful time.

Los Gigantes – Tenerife Town of Impressive Cliffs & Beach Feel

streets of Los Gigantes town

One of the most famous Tenerife towns Los Gigantes is ideal not just for a visit but for a stay for people who come to Tenerife for the first time. It offers a quiet comfortable area together with beautiful scenery, fishing opportunities, diving, boat trips on yachts and access to beaches with black volcanic sand.

If you are staying in the south of Tenerife in another town, come here on a quick trip just to check out the area which is beautiful.

Los Gigantes is famous for its huge cliffs and pretty setting. In fact, the town derives its name from the towering cliffs that dominate the coastline, reaching heights of up to 800 meters (2,600 feet). They create a breathtaking backdrop against the beach and offer spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.

In addition to its natural beauty, there is a range of attractions and activities for visitors in town. For example, a charming marina is a strating point for many boat trips and excursions to explore the nearby waters, including dolphin and whale watching tours. The sea around Los Gigantes is home to a diverse marine life , making it a popular spot for diving and snorkeling.

The town itself has a laid-back and friendly atmosphere, with a selection of restaurants, cafes, and shops along its streets. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade, relax on the sandy beach, or indulge in delicious seafood dishes at the waterfront restaurants.

If you ever go, make a stop the Tea House and Bar with a big selection of teas and nicely served arrays of scones, cakes and sandwiches.

Is Los Gigantes a Good Town to Stay?

Los Gigantes is a fantastic town to consider for your stay in Tenerife, especially if you are visiting for the first time and looking for a quiet place.

Los Gigantes’ location offers breathtaking views of the iconic cliffs that give the town its name. Additionally, the town boasts a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere , making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful getaway.

It is also renowned for its marina, where you can go on boat trips to explore the nearby sea caves and encounter marine life such as dolphins and whales. With a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as easy access to beautiful beaches like Playa de la Arena, Los Gigantes is a nice place where to stay.

There are not really many full-scale hotels though. But you’ll be able to find scenic apartments like Acantilados apartment with a view or Casa Amber .

Los Cristianos – Beach Resorts & Entertainment

best town in Tenerife for a beach vacation

Los Cristianos is a small town in the south of Tenerife that is too popular among tourists as it offers a perfect blend of relaxation and entertainment.

If you don’t plan to stay there or nearby, I wouldn’t really go to this town as it’s promenade, beaches, and atmospehere are very similar to other towns along the south coast. Instead, I’d recommend you go explore other regions of Tenerife that I mentioned above.

The only thing that differs here in comparison with other towns is the beaches with golden sand . Also, that along with Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos has a reputation for being very quiet and peaceful with some nice hotels on the first lane. It will suit perfectly couples with children or those who prefer to unplug on vacation and take it really slowly. In addition, it has all the conditions for people with disabilities.

The golden sand beaches of Playa de Los Cristianos and Playa de las Vistas provide a perfect setting for relaxing, swimming, sunbathing, or indulging in various water sports such as jet skiing, snorkeling, and diving.

There is also a picturesque harbor next to the beach that serves as a departure point for boat trips and excursions. From here, you can hop on a ferry to the nearby island of La Gomera or join a boat excursion for whale and dolphin watching.

Is It a Good Idea to Stay in Los Cristianos?

With its lively atmosphere, beautiful beaches , a range of amenities, and attractions for visitors to enjoy, Los Cristianos is also a great choice for a stay on the island.

In fact, this town is home to a few nice all-inclusive hotels for a lower budget (like H10 Big Sur or Arona Gran Hotel ) or hotels with kitchens like Ohasis Boutique Suites , Gran Oasis Resort .

El Medano – Coastal Hiking & Windsurfing

El Medano town

A small, not so much known town of El Medano is situated not far from the airport in the south of Tenerife. It has a very limited number of hotels, that’s why the majority of people rarely visit it.

But El Medano is famous for a few things. First one – for the surfing , windsurfing , and kitesurfing opportunities as the town is located in a rather windy place. Those who do not know how to surf can take surf lessons from local couches that don’t cost a lot. Wetsuits and boards are available for rent for an additional fee.

Another feature that makes El Medano a nice Tenerife town to visit is the number of hiking/walking trails in the area .

For those who would like to explore the coastal zone on foot, there is a good choice to climb the “Red Mountain” ( Montana Roja ) which is visible from many points. It offers extraordinary views that give an idea of the area and its relief. From there you can even see the runway of the South Airport.

Red Mountain near Tenerife south airport

Not far from the Red Mountain within El Medano town limit, there is also a ranch “ Casa Caballo ” offering horseback riding for adults and children.

On the other side of the town, three kilometers away, is Montaña Pelada which translates as “Bald Mountain”. This is a natural monument with a territory that is under protection. It is a volcanic formation with a huge crater, which is about one kilometer in diameter. In the past, a volcano ejected lava into the Atlantic Ocean here, forming large clouds of smoke from evaporating water.

And then when you are in the area and crave Chinese food, this restaurant has a good selection and quality. Overall the plaza where it is located has quite a few nice establishments with drinks and food.

Should You Stay in El Medano?

El Medano is also not a bad option where to stay in Tenerife but mainly if you are on a tight budget and want to be close to other towns along the southern coast.

The choice of nice hotels is very limited in El Medano and the main type of accommodation here is apartments and shared houses.

Alcalá – Quiet Town With Luxurious Hotels

Alcala lesser known town in Tenerife

Another quite unknown and somewhat hidden town on Tenerife’s southern coast is Alcala, once a bustling fishing village that turned into a resort town with a couple of nice resort hotels for couples.

Of course, if you are staying in northern Tenerife, coming here directly doesn’t make much sense. But if you are on a road trip around Tenerife or if you are based in the south and want to explore the coast, don’t miss Alcala town with a few beaches and beautiful coastal trails.

This town boasts a small pier with fishing boats where you can practice various water sports. In close proximity to the pier, almost on every street, there are some delectable seafood restaurants with dishes made with fresh catches of the day. Additionally, the pier area is home to a sailing school that offers private lessons for those interested.

Situated just a 30-minute drive away from the lively atmosphere of Costa Adeje, Alcala town provides a more serene and tranquil setting, perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape.

Not far from the town’s old center, more to the north, you’ll find a public pool one of the best natural pools in southern Tenerife.

Should You Stay in Alcalá?

Besides visiting, Alcalá is an excellent town where to stay in Tenerife as there are some prestigious hotels, recognized as some of the top accommodations in the Canary Islands like Palacio de Isora , Ritz Carlton , and Las Terrazas de Abama Suites .

Arona – Mountain Town in Tenerife

tourist spots in tenerife

A small town Arona is quite different from all other towns on this list. It doesn’t have direct access to the coastline but is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and has a few attractions that make it worth a trip.

First, you can make a stop here quickly when going to Teide National Park or pay a separate visit on a day trip from Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, or another coastal town where you stay.

The most famous places in Arona are Camel Park and Jungle Park  where the first park provides an opportunity to interact with camels and enjoy camel rides while the second park is a zoo and botanical garden, showcasing a variety of animal species and featuring entertaining shows.

Arona town

Since Arona is situated in the heart of the Arona Mountains, there are also multiple trails that start from town and lead to some scenic areas. If you are a hiker, this is a place to go to and have a very different hiking experience than in Anaga or Teno mountains which are much more famous these days.

Should You Stay in Arona?

I’d say no unless you live in Tenerife and want to have a weekend break in a new unique town. Or unless you plan to go on a long hike and use public transportation to reach Arona. In this case, it will be smart to stay there until the next morning.

Where to avoid the crowds in Tenerife

Once considered the edge of the world, the Canary Islands stood where the Old World map ended before European explorers "discovered" civilization on the other side of the storm-tossed Atlantic.

These days the islands are very much on the vacation map, with their distinctive culture and one-of-a-kind landscapes ranging from glittering black-sand beaches to snow-capped volcanic peaks. Tenerife  is the biggest and best-known of the bunch, but even this island has secret places for those who are willing to dodge the crowds and go the extra mile.

Venture beyond the crowded beach resorts in the south, the island's famous water park or the well-trodden hikes and trails to find a hidden Tenerife filled with more secluded spots where you can slip into the relaxed swing of Canarian life. It's an ideal destination to disconnect and enjoy the great, remote outdoors. Here's a handy guide to the best of secret Tenerife beyond the crowds.

Man holding a long surf board on a beach in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Secluded beaches of Tenerife

The south coast beaches like Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos thrum with beach-goers, but those in the know go north instead for a slice of proper coastal wilderness and fewer crowds. Some of the best northern beaches are terrifically secluded, so much so that you can only reach them on foot or by boat.

Getting to back-to-nature Playa de Antequera in the northeast, which some locals consider the best beach on the island, doesn’t come easy. It requires a two- to three-hour hike – or a shorter boat rental – from the town of Igueste de San Andrés. However, it’s worth the effort to lounge on its pristine sands, surrounded by cave-pitted cliffs and rock formations.

If you’re less inclined to hike, head to cliff-wrapped Playa de Benijo in the foothills of the Anaga Mountains, or Playa de las Gaviotas, a gorgeous scoop of dark sand below rugged cliffs, both of which are a tad busier because they accessible by car and shorter footpaths. Both have views of impressive volcanic rock formations and – if you’re inclined – are clothing optional.

Which of the Canary Islands is best for you?

Man admiring the view of volcano Teide at dusk. Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Top of Mt Teide

Mt Teide isn’t exactly hidden: popping up above the lava-sculpted moonscape of the national park, it's Spain’s tallest peak and the third highest volcano in the world at 3715m (12,188ft). Its eruption millions of years ago contributed to the creation of Tenerife and is now one of the island’s biggest pulls. Most head up the easy way – via cable car – but you can stray away from the crowds and trek up on foot.

It’s a tough five- to six-hour hike from the cable car base station to La Rambleta at 3555m (11,633ft). The area surrounding the upper station is just 150m (500ft) short of the true Pico del Teide . Plan ahead and obtain a permit to go beyond this point and trek up to the crater summit, another strenuous hour on foot round-trip. You’ll be glad you decided to stand on the rooftop of Spain as, giddy with elation and short of breath, you take in views that sweep across the lunar valley and beyond to the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro glimmering across the Atlantic.

If you don't want to hike up Mt Teide, easier walks dip into Parque Nacional del Teide. You’ll find parking areas to its otherworldly volcanic trails along TF-21 – the one road at the base of the peak – including those around the bizarre Roques de Garcia and Las Minas de San Jose.

Traveling to the Canary or Balearic islands in Spain? Here’s what to expect

Punta de Teno

Flicking out into the Atlantic in the northwest, Punta de Teno  is a small peninsula jutting into the Atlantic that's wild and wondrous, with waves hammering a dark-sand beach, mountains rising sheer and rugged in the backdrop and a lighthouse blinking out into the expansive ocean. This scenic promontory was once overrun with visitors, but the Canarian government has placed limits on visitor numbers to curb the masses and to preserve the fragile environment.

But that doesn’t mean it’s completely off limits. Restricted car access during the day means it is now largely uncrowded, and you can visit on foot or by bike or public bus. The Teno Lighthouse, built in 1893, has phenomenal views of the west coast cliffs of Los Gigantes, soaring above a wave-lashed sea. Sunset is primetime viewing.

For a leap into cool, inky sapphire waters and a ramble into the caves, check out La Ballenita beach.

A group of kayakers paddle next to a large rock formation in Tenerife.

Masca Bay and the coast of Los Gigantes

Dangling precariously off a cliff, the astonishingly lovely mountain village of Masca is popular among day-trippers and with good reason – it’s a knockout. Some say the town is Tenerife’s answer to Peru’s Machu Picchu because it is flanked by a tall Huayna Picchu–esque mound, just like the Incan citadel.

Many people drop in to stroll Masca’s main drag of cafes and souvenir stores, but the real magic lies in the hike through Barranco de Masca , a tough six-hour round-trip trudge over stream, through orchard and past mighty walls of vertical rock to the sea. If you want to trim the walk a bit, time it so you can hop on a boat from the bay to the lofty cliffs of Los Gigantes. It will save your legs and also give you a sneak peek at some of the most memorable coast-scapes on the island. Kayak tours, which paddle along the coast of Los Gigantes, can be arranged in the nearby port town of Santiago del Teide, at the Puerto Deportivo Los Gigantes .

If this sounds too exerting, join one of the boat tours departing from the port of Santiago del Teide, which stops at calm coves in Masca Bay where you can take a quick dip. Along the way, you’ll likely be joined by pods of short-finned pilot whales. One of the world’s largest colonies dwells in these waters between Tenerife and neighboring La Gomera.

Tenerife’s appeal goes way beyond the obvious allure of its beaches and volcanoes. The north is a Darwinian wonderland of rare wildlife, shaggy mountains, craggy cliffs and ancient woodlands from the elevated pine forest on Monte de Esperanza to Parque Rural de Anaga, which encompasses much of the island’s northeast.

This vast mountainous area bubbled up from the seabed some nine million years ago and has evolved into a nature reserve so unique that it was given UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 2016. Among the twisted, lichen-swathed trunks of ancient laurisilva (laurel forest), scientists have recorded 1900 species, including reptiles, birds, fish and invertebrates.

A popular trek through Anaga Rural Park begins at the visitor center in Cruz del Carmen, on the TF-12 road, and wends down the trail to the coastal hamlet of Taganana for a dip in the ocean. The park is crisscrossed with incredible trails, which vary in length and difficulty. For something more gentle and accessible, Sendero de Los Sentidos (Footpath of the Senses) is a network of three easy nature walks from the visitor center.

South Tenerife has a lot to offer, most notably its incredible coastline. Here, you can relax on the beautiful white sands, soak up the sun, and practice all kinds of watersports. Of course, there are other fun things to do in southern Tenerife , from exploring its charming towns to enjoying its nightlife and entertainment.

To fully discover the history and character of this Canary Island in Spain, you can’t miss the most popular places in south Tenerife . This Tenerife travel guide will help you plan your visit to the southern part of the island, including what to see, where to stay, and where to eat. While the activities in north Tenerife are more focused on nature, the south is a hub for tourist attractions and beach lovers.

There are many places to explore, so I recommend renting a vehicle so you can move freely around the island. We booked ours through DiscoverCars , and it was the best way to travel on our own schedule, both in Tenerife South and North. So, if you want to see all the top attractions in Tenerife , a car is the ideal option.

With that said, here are the 10 best things to do in Tenerife South !

1. Costa Adeje, one of the best places to visit in south Tenerife

First, Costa Adeje is one of the liveliest places on the island with a wide selection of restaurants, bars, shops, and the best nightclubs in Tenerife . Basically, whatever your interests are, you’ll be able to find something in Costa Adeje!

Costa Adeje, best places to visit in south Tenerife

In addition to being a main tourist center, this town is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in southern Tenerife , like Playa de Las Américas and Los Cristianos . While they’re lovely beaches, they’re also wildly popular, so you’ll have to brave the crowds. If you prefer something quieter, check out Costa del Silencio, where you can admire the volcanic landscape and go snorkeling or diving in crystal-clear waters.

Another aquatic activity in Tenerife South is spending the day at Siam Park , a waterpark in Costa Adeje that I’ll touch on later. You can also go to the Puertito de Adeje, a nature reserve with some unique marine life. Keep your eyes peeled for crabs, seahorses, sea turtles, and colorful fish.

There are so many things to do in Costa Adeje , which is why lots of visitors choose to stay the night. If you’re thinking of staying here, check out our specific guides to the best Costa Adeje accommodations.

2. Visit Playa de Las Am éricas and other beautiful beaches in south Tenerife

The beaches of southern Tenerife are incredible and perfect for those who love spending the day by the ocean. Playa de Las Américas is by far the most popular, thanks to its fine golden sands and its nearby activities and attractions. Here, you’ll find convenient services, dining options, a promenade, and watersports.

El Medano Beach, beaches in south tenerife

2. Visit Playa de Las Américas and other beautiful beaches in south Tenerife – Efrén Yanes

Another excellent place in south Tenerife for a beach day is Los Cristianos Beach . It’s also surrounded by shops and restaurants, and it has gentle waves, so it’s ideal for families with children. Like Playa Las Américas, this beach is often crowded with visitors, so if you want more peace and solitude, consider some other beaches in the area. Diego Hernández Beach and Montaña Pelada Beach are gorgeous, and El Médano Beach is considered one of the best beaches in Tenerife .

Finally, if you plan on spending a lot of time by the ocean or practicing watersports, I recommend staying in one of the top-rated apartments in Playa de Las Américas . This way, you’ll be close to several of the nicest beaches in the area.

3. Dolphin and whale-watching, one of the best activities in Tenerife South

Without a doubt, going whale and dolphin-watching is one of the best things to do in southern Tenerife . Every time we travel to the island (or any other place with whale-inhabited waters), we book a tour to see these wild cetaceans. I recommend this in both our one-week itinerary to Tenerife and our 5-day itinerary to Tenerife .

The most recent one we took was this excursion , which I highly recommend. Not only will you have the best chances of spotting whales and dolphins, but you’ll also travel in a glass-bottom catamaran. Enjoy seeing the tropical fish below your feet and keep an eye out for other marine life. During the tour, we saw lots of dolphins and pilot whales, although up to 21 different species of cetaceans inhabit these Canarian waters.

Dolphin and whale-watching, activities in tenerife south spain

Of course, it’s important to remember that these are wild animals with unpredictable movements and behaviors. While the tour operators have been in business for years and can pretty accurately anticipate where to find dolphins and whales, they can’t make any guarantees. We’ve always seen cetaceans during our tours, but if you don’t have any luck with this excursion, you can take it again for free.

Again, I can’t recommend this activity enough, and it’s a fun thing to do in south Tenerife for the whole family. If you’re interested, you can take a look at our complete guide to whale-watching in Tenerife for more information and tours.

4. Go to Siam Park, the best thing to do in south Tenerife for families

Back in Costa Adeje, Siam Park is an awesome place in south Tenerife where you can cool off with friends or family. This waterpark, which is inspired by the tropics of Thailand, has been ranked as the Best Waterpark in the World by TripAdvisor for several consecutive years.

Siam Park, attractions in tenerife south canary islands

Siam Park has activities and attractions for all ages, including toddler and child-friendly slides and play structures. There are also the Mekong Rapids, the Jungle Snake waterslide, and the 92-foot-tall Tower of Power slide. Also, the park has The Wave Palace, the largest wave pool in the world with waves up to nearly 10 feet high.

If you plan on going to Siam Park during your trip, it’s best to get your tickets in advance so you can avoid long lines.

5. Vilaflor de Chasna, a spectacular place in south Tenerife you can’t miss

For a beautiful and quiet day on the island, head to Vilaflor de Chasna . This remote town is a wonderful change of pace from the more touristy areas in south Tenerife , plus it has some of the most incredible sites.

Vilaflor de Chasna is 4,920 feet above sea level, so it has a mild and pleasant climate year-round. Moreover, the charming streets and plazas here still preserve some of their traditional architecture from the 17 th and 18 th centuries. It’s not hard to see why this is one of the best towns in southern Tenerife where you can disconnect for a bit.

Vilaflor de Chasna, areas in south tenerife

Not only that but there is a circular hiking trail here that goes through the Paisaje Lunar (Lunar Landscape) , which was caused by years of erosion. Hiking along this route is one of the best things to do in Tenerife South , especially if you love nature. As you hike, you’ll pass through a pine forest before seeing the peculiar geological formations of the landscape.

Walking through here feels like being in a science fiction movie, and it’s well worth the effort. You can even stay in one of the quaint accommodations in Vilaflor after exploring the stellar scenery of this place.

6. Go surfing, a fun thing to do in south Tenerife

Practicing watersports is another fun thing to do in south Tenerife , and two of the most popular activities are surfing and bodyboarding. The beaches of southern Tenerife have ideal conditions for surfing, which makes them attractive to both locals and tourists.

Surfing, best things to do in south tenerife canary islands

If you want to try these watersports but you don’t have any experience, no worries. This three-hour surfing lesson is perfect for first-timers. It’s in Playa de Las Américas, although you can find other lessons and surf schools on several other beaches.

That said, Playa de Las Américas is the best place in south Tenerife to go surfing since it has both large and small waves, as well as convenient services and equipment rentals. The beach has a few different surfing areas, like El Conquistador and Las Palmeras, although Las Galletas Beach is a good alternative if you prefer something quieter. It’s next to a charming village where you can rest or grab a bite to eat after riding the waves.

7. Barranco del Infierno, the best hike in south Tenerife, Canary Islands

Back on dry land, I suggest exploring the impressive landscape by visiting the Barranco del Infierno Special Nature Reserve . This quiet area in the south of Tenerife is a nature lover’s dream, as well as where you’ll find one of Tenerife’s best hiking routes .

The Barranco del Infierno trail is about 5 miles long, so it takes around 3 hours to complete. It’s suitable for all levels since it’s not too complicated, with a maximum drop of only about 650 feet. What makes this one of the best hikes on the island is the scenery you’ll see along the way. You’ll pass by numerous viewpoints, and a lovely waterfall will be waiting for you at the end of the route.

Barranco del Infierno, what to do in south tenerife spain

The Barranco del Infierno is a spectacular gorge that I highly recommend visiting, although I should tell you that access is limited to 20 people every 30 minutes, and you can only visit during opening hours. This rule was put in place to protect the natural environment here, as well as the local flora and fauna. You should check the official website to see the reserve’s hours and book your ticket.

Alternatively, you could book this guided tour , which includes your entry ticket, as well as food, drinks, transportation, and a hiking guide.

8. Scuba diving, an unforgettable experience in Tenerife South

In addition to swimming, sunbathing, and surfing, the beaches of southern Tenerife are perfect for scuba diving . Discovering the marine life and biodiversity of the coast’s seabed is an incredible experience, so I encourage you to give it a try.

Don’t worry if you’ve never gone scuba diving before because there are several great tours and guided dives in the area. I recommend this diving excursion , which is meant for beginners and includes a professional instructor who will be by your side the entire time.

Scuba diving, what to do in tenerife south

We had no regrets about doing this activity in south Tenerife , and we can’t imagine a better place to do it. The crystal clear waters here made it easy to see all kinds of colorful fish, reefs, coral, and other marine life. My favorite part was diving among the sea turtles; it was something I’ll never forget.

If you have reservations about scuba diving, I say just go for it. However, I know this activity isn’t for everyone, so a good alternative is this snorkeling tour to see sea turtles, or this kayaking excursion , which includes a snorkeling session. You can find even more options in our guide on the best excursions in Tenerife .

9. El M édano, another lovely place to visit in south Tenerife

El Médano is one of the best towns in southern Tenerife , thanks to its pristine beaches and beautiful outdoor attractions.

El Médano, beaches in south tenerife

9. El Médano, another lovely place to visit in south Tenerife

First, the beaches of El Médano stand out for their ideal surfing conditions. Year-round, you can find people surfing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing on the glorious waves. Whether you practice watersports or not, I suggest going to La Tejita Beach, which is within the Montaña Roja Natural Reserve. This area offers stunning panoramic views of the volcanic crater, and you can even hike to the top of Red Mountain, an iconic landmark in Tenerife South with a unique reddish hue.

This area is also full of some rare flora and fauna, as well as native bird species, so it’s quite a treat. While you’re here, it’s worth checking out some other attractions in El Médano , like the Cueva del Hermano Pedro. This Historic Site and Asset of Cultural Interest is dedicated to Santo Hermano Pedro, or Pedro de San José Betancur, a religious figure who used the cave as a hideout when he was a child.

10. Mount Teide, a must-see in south Tenerife, Canary Islands

Last but certainly not least, Teide National Park is one of the best places to visit in south Tenerife  and the entire island. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Natura 2000 Network , thanks to its geological, ecological, and cultural importance.

If you enjoy hiking, then climbing Mount Teide is the best thing to do in Tenerife south . Most people ascend the mountain by taking the Teide cable car, which is 7,730 feet above sea level and connects to La Rambleta, at 11,665 feet. From there, you can trek the last 650 feet up to the summit by taking Sendero 10 (Telesforo Bravo).

Mount Teide, must see tenerife south

10. Mount Teide, a must-see in south Tenerife, Canary Islands – Efrén Yanes

Keep in mind that to access this trail, you must request this permit in advance. Otherwise, you’ll have to take Trail 11 or Trail 12 from La Rambleta, which lead to the Mirador de la Fortaleza and the Pico Viejo Viewpoint, respectively. While you won’t be able to go to the summit, these two lookout points are incredible.

Another way to climb Mount Teide is by doing the entire route on foot. We did this once, starting at the trailhead of Sendero 7 (Montaña Blanca), and following the path for about 5 miles. It took us around 4 hours, and we ended up at La Rambleta. We decided to spend the night at the Altavista Mountain Refuge , then woke up early to go to the summit at dawn to watch the sunrise. This way, we didn’t need a permit since you can access the peak before 9 a.m. without one.

Finally, if you don’t want to hike on your own, you can take one of the best Mount Teide tours . I recommend this excursion , which includes your permit and cable car ticket, but there is also this one that only includes the cable car. You might also like this free tour (in Spanish), which takes you through the Cañadas del Teide and past the Roques de García and Roque Cinchado.

Where to stay in south Tenerife – Best hotels in southern Tenerife

To make the most of your trip and see all the top attractions in Tenerife South , I recommend staying overnight in one of the best hotels in South Tenerife .

Iberostar Selection Sabila, best place to stay in tenerife south

There are many great Tenerife hotels in the south, although one of my favorites is the Iberostar Selection Sábila , one of the best 5-star resorts in Spain . It’s right on Fañabé Beach in Costa Adeje and has amazing rooms, a spa, a buffet restaurant, and more.

Where to eat in southern Tenerife – Best restaurants in south Tenerife

While exploring the island and trying some of the best activities in south Tenerife , you’ll want to recharge your batteries. There are some incredible restaurants in Tenerife South , like Almar Tenerife in Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje. It specializes in seafood and fish, but you’ll also find delicious meat and vegan options. Another excellent place to eat is Taberna Tío Martín in Playa de Las Américas, which serves a wide selection of tapas from different regions of Spain, as well as traditional Canarian cuisine .

Taberna Tio Martin, restaurants in south tenerife

If you’re in El Médano, check out the Restaurante Familiar . The service is friendly, the atmosphere is cozy, and the prices are affordable, making it one of the best restaurants in south Tenerife . Here, you’ll find all kinds of dishes, from fish and grilled meat to Mediterranean cuisine and vegetarian-friendly options.
