Will I have a problem towing a 40' fifth wheel on this road?

' class=

But it has been a few years.

Half Brit RVs too and she will know when she gets on here. They have a 5th wheel as well.

Bet regards,

I had a few antsy moments driving 199 in a 28' motorhome....but it was at night, my first trip with the rig, and my first time on 199. Maybe those tight curves have been fixed by now.

Hi Garry N and welcome to TripAdvisor. We drive a Freightliner with a 30' 5th wheel.

The answer is not a definite yes or no! The highway overall is a good highway. There are some sections which are slower and narrower, but those are all of fairly short length. The highway gets more than a fair amount of big truck traffic.

There is one section of 199 that is the one that everybody remembers! It's where the road goes right alongside the river and on the other side is a big rock cliff wall. The road is narrow there and there is no room for making it wider (even if the state scrounged up enough money and interest do to so).

You'll be on the river side, so you won't have to worry about that rock wall. If you go slowly and cautiously, you should be okay. That narrow dramatic stretch is short - maybe 2 miles - I don't remember exactly.

http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist1/d1projects/richardson_grove/

Anyway, hope this info helps and please don't hesitate to ask additional questions about routes or RV parks . . . or whatever :-)

' class=

HB. May I ask, seeing how we will also be driving that route, where is the section of the 199 that "everybody remembers".

I'd like to look it up on Google maps.

I have driven that section under a variety of conditions. If there is fog along the coast, it'll clear up before you reach Jedidiah Smith SP. In clear summer weather, the drive will be just as kingfish described. However, if you let the speedometer rise above 25-30mph you could find yourself in some tense moments. I've driven this going westbound night time in a major December rainstorm that turned the cliff walls in o raging waterfalls. Visibility was l9mited to whatever the headlights lit up and the headlights of vehicles coming toward us blinded us entirely. Once we got through there we hit the coastal fog and were once again requiring seeing eye dogs to help us get to Eureka.

You won't have such conditions on your trip. I just enjoy telling the story, since we obviously survived OK.

sorry about the typos above. I'll have a talk with my computer about that.

You won't have any problems at all, Marcel :-)

I realise I won't have any problems. I have a lot of experience driving in the Alps, mainly in France and Italy.

I was just trying to locate the "2 miles" out of interest. Are we talking about the stretch just after Myrtle Creek, the area around Hardscrabble Creek (must stop there for a game of Scrabble!), further along by Patrick Creek or elsewhere?

UPDATE, FRIDAY, AUG. 25, 4:50 p.m.:

Due to aggressive fire behavior and severe weather which has affected the Smith River Complex fire over the last few days in Oregon, the previously planned escorted and limited traffic control on US-199 has tentatively been delayed until Wednesday, August 30th, as the roadway in Oregon is currently unsafe to travel.

Press release from Caltrans:

The California Highway Patrol understands the stress and inconvenience caused to our Del Norte Residents due to the Smith River Complex Fire. Our number one priority is protecting and saving the lives of our residents, motoring public and the fire personnel working diligently to protect our homes. US-199 is a vital necessity to our county for resources, medical supplies and everyday commerce. Our goal is to make US-199 a working thoroughfare as soon as possible. The California Highway Patrol in collaboration with Caltrans, will open US-199 two times per day beginning Monday August 28, 2023 in an escorted and controlled one-way traffic capacity. This date could possibly be changed depending on the direction of travel the fire takes over the next several days. There will be a morning commute and an evening commute to accommodate travel. The escorted travel schedule will be the following: 0700 Hours (7 a.m.) : Travel from the south closure in Gasquet on US-199 to the Oregon border. Once all of the northbound traffic has been escorted through the closure to the Oregon border, southbound traffic will be escorted from the Oregon Border back to the south closure in Gasquet. Once traffic has been escorted through in both directions, US-199 will again be closed until the 1700 hour opening. 1700 hours (5 p.m.) : Travel from the south closure in Gasquet on US-199 to the Oregon border. Once all of the northbound traffic has been escorted through the closure to the Oregon border, southbound traffic will be escorted from the Oregon Border back to the south closure in Gasquet. Once traffic has been escorted through in both directions, US-199 will again be closed until the 0700 hour opening the following day. The Smith River Complex Fire is very unpredictable, and these plans are subject to change if there is a safety risk to our motoring public and/or personnel. The California Highway Patrol values every member of Del Norte County, making their safety and best interest a top priority. We are eager to open US-199 and bring this valued resource back to our community.

U.S. 199 Oregon

travel on 199

While U.S. 99 was decommissioned 1972, U.S. 199 remains within the system connecting Crescent City, California with Grants Pass, Oregon. 80 miles in length, U.S. 199 passes through Gasquet, California to O'Brien, Cave Junction and Selma, Oregon. It follows the northernmost segment of the Redwood Highway, which follows U.S. 101 from San Francisco to Crescent City and U.S. 199 from there north to Grants Pass. Most of U.S. 199 in Oregon is a two lane highway, passing from the foothills of Oregon Mountain north to Grants Pass.

The city of Grants Pass began in 1865 as the site of a stage station and post office. The site was named "Grant" in honor of Union General Ulysses S. Grant, however that would quickly be changed as another Grant, Oregon already existed at the time. At the same time a new roadway linking the area with Merlin to the north was constructed. Crews working on the project suggested calling the road over the pass of Merlin Hill, Grant's Pass. The name caught on and eventually encompassed the post office. In 1883 the Southern Pacific Railroad line entered the valley and the community of Grants Pass grew. Expansion of Grants Pass followed as the town prospered as a shipping center. Incorporation followed in 1885 at the same time Grants Pass became the seat of government for Josephine County.

Grant's Pass motto is "It's the Climate." Annual rainfall in 2005 was 37.92 inches, with average July temperatures in the low 90s and average January temperatures in the upper 40s. Nevertheless, rain has caused flooding in Grants Pass, with flooding events along the Rogue River in 1997 and 1964. Excessive rain in those years both resulted in widespread flooding and related damage in southern Oregon and northwest California.

A morning with the Rabbit R1: a fun, funky, unfinished AI gadget

What it does, the r1 seems to do well enough — with some typical ai quirks. but where are all the features we were promised.

By David Pierce , editor-at-large and Vergecast co-host with over a decade of experience covering consumer tech. Previously, at Protocol, The Wall Street Journal, and Wired.

The Rabbit R1 in front of a window.

There were times I wasn’t sure the Rabbit R1 was even a real thing. The AI-powered, Teenage Engineering-designed device came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest stories at CES , promising a level of fun and whimsy that felt much better than some of the more self-serious AI companies out there. CEO Jesse Lyu practically promised the world in this $199 device.

Well, say this for Rabbit: it’s real. Last night , I went to the swanky TWA Hotel in New York City, along with a few hundred reporters, creators, and particularly enthusiastic R1 buyers . After a couple of hours of photo booths, specialty cocktails, and a rousing keynote and demo from Lyu — in which he made near-constant reference to and fun of the Humane AI Pin — we all got our R1s to take home. I’ve been using mine ever since, and I have some thoughts. And some questions.

A hand holding the Rabbit R1.

From a hardware perspective, the R1 screams “kinda meh Android phone.” Here are the salient specs: it’s about three inches tall and wide and a half-inch thick. It weighs 115 grams, which is about two-thirds as much as the iPhone 15. It has a 2.88-inch screen, runs on a 2.3GHz MediaTek MT6765 processor, and has 128 gigs of storage and four gigs of RAM. It has a speaker on the back, two mics on the top, and a SIM card slot on the side right next to the USB-C charging port. It only comes in one color, a hue Rabbit calls “leuchtorange” but is often known as “brilliant orange” or “luminous orange.” It’s definitely orange, and it’s definitely luminous.

At this point, the best way I can describe the R1 is like a Picasso painting of a smartphone: it has most of the same parts, just laid out really differently. Instead of sitting on top or in the back, the R1’s camera sits in a cutout space on the right side of the device, where it can spin its lens to face both toward and away from you.

The R1 is like a Picasso painting of a smartphone

After spending a few hours playing with the device, I have to say: it’s pretty nice. Not luxurious, or even particularly high-end, just silly and fun. Where Humane’s AI Pin feels like a carefully sculpted metal gem, the R1 feels like an old-school MP3 player crossed with a fidget spinner. The wheel spins a little stiffly for my taste but smoothly enough, the screen is a little fuzzy but fine, and the main action button feels satisfying to thump on.

When I first got the device and connected it to Wi-Fi, it then immediately asked me to sign up for an account at Rabbithole, the R1’s web portal. I did that, scanned a QR code with the R1 to get it synced up, and immediately did a software update. I spent that time logging in to the only four external services the R1 currently connects to: Spotify, Uber, DoorDash, and Midjourney.

A screenshot of the Connections screen on Rabbithole.

Once I was eventually up and running, I started chatting with the R1. So far, it does a solid job with basic AI questions: it gave me lots of good information about this week’s NFL draft, found a few restaurants near me, and knew when Herbert Hoover was president. This is all fairly basic ChatGPT stuff, and there’s some definite lag as it fetches answers, but I much prefer the interface to the Humane AI Pin — because there’s a screen, and you can see the thing working so the AI delays don’t feel quite so interminable.

Because there’s a screen, the AI delays don’t feel quite so interminable

Almost immediately, though, I started running into stuff the R1 just can’t do. It can’t send emails or make spreadsheets, though Lyu has been demoing both for months. Rabbithole is woefully unfinished, too, to the point I was trying to tap around on my phone and it was instead moving a cursor around a half-second after every tap. That’s a good reminder that the whole thing is running on a virtual machine storing all your apps and credentials, which still gives me security-related pause.

Oh, and here’s my favorite thing that has happened on the R1 so far: I got it connected to my Spotify account, which is a feature I’m particularly excited about. I asked for “Beyoncé’s new album,” and the device excitedly went and found me “Crazy in Love” — a lullaby version, from an artist called “Rockabye Baby!” So close and yet so far. It doesn’t seem to be able to find my playlists, either, or skip tracks. When I said, “Play The 1975,” though, that worked fine and quickly. (The speaker, by the way, is very much crappy Android phone quality. You’re going to want to use that Bluetooth connection.)

The R1’s Vision feature, which uses the camera to identify things in the scene around you, seems to work fine as long as all you want is a list of objects in the scene. The device can’t take a photo or video and doesn’t seem to be able to do much else with what it can see.

A photo of the Vision feature running on a Rabbit R1.

When you’re not doing anything, the screen shows the time and that bouncing rabbit-head logo. When you press and hold the side button to issue a command, the time and battery fade away, and the rabbit’s ears perk up like it’s listening. It’s very charming! The overall interface is simple and text-based, but it’s odd in spots: it’s not always obvious how to go back, for instance, and you only get to see a line or two of text at a time at the very bottom of the screen, even when there’s a whole paragraph of answer to read.

Rabbit’s roadmap is ambitious: Lyu has spent the last few months talking about all the things the R1’s so-called “Large Action Model” can do, including learning apps and using them for you. During last night’s event, he talked about opening up the USB-C port on the device to allow accessories, keyboards, and more. That’s all coming… eventually. Supposedly. For now, the R1’s feature set is much more straightforward. You can use the device to play music, get answers to questions, translate speech, take notes, summon an Uber, and a few other things.

The back of the Rabbit R1.

That means there’s still an awful lot the R1 can’t do and a lot I have left to test. (Anything you want to know about, by the way, let me know!) I’m particularly curious about its battery life, its ability to work with a bad connection, whether it heats up over time, and how it handles more complex tasks than just looking up information and ordering chicken nuggets. But so far, this thing seems like it’s trying to be less like a smartphone killer and more like the beginnings of a useful companion. That’s probably as ambitious as it makes sense to be right now — though Lyu and the Rabbit folks have a lot of big promises to eventually live up to and not a lot of time to do so.
