Gastor, El

The village, located in the north east of the province, is situated between Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park , to which part of the municipal area belongs, and the countryside.

Considered the "balcony of the White Villages ', it started life as a repopulation settlement in the 16th century with a typical urban layout, all the houses built on a slope and surrounding the village square.

Places of Interest are the Giant's Dolmen, a fine example of megalithic art, and El Tajo Algarin, a gorge affording a magnificent panoramic view.

We stayed in a lovely villa near Alcúdia and this was the first time using Vintage Travel. We would definitely use this company again, villa was exactly as described and the local rep Kristel was very helpful and lovely too. The peaceful location and pool were just what we were looking for and we look forward to booking with you again.

Personal touch

What a lovely company. Helpful, friendly, polite emails re booking from the British team (even the don’t forget to pay us emails 😂). Really lovely house, and true to its description / pictures on the website. The best info folder I’ve ever encountered. And the VT Crete rep, John, is essentially like having your own travel PA. Brilliant advice and tips, speedy responses to texts, v lovely. Would deffinitely use VT again.

Thank you so much for your lovely review, we really appreciate it! I will pass on your feedback to John our overseas Representative. We look forward to being of service again in the future.

We recently had a two week stay at Villa Dafni in Kefalonia. Wow what a villa. Traditional looking building, but once inside it was fabulous. Then open the shutters on to the veranda to a fantastic swimming pool, and amazing views. Even though we couldn't meet our rep Mandy(covid restrictions), Mandy was really helpful. Really peaceful location, we loved it. Would highly recommend Villa Dafni and would stay again

We booked a villa in Andalucia which was easy. We were very impressed with the service and even when an issue occured with the villa, we were offered a near by one instead which we were happy with. We were sent all relevant documents, info & excellent directions & support. Our villa was fabulous and just what we had hoped for, Georgina was a great support and was there if we needed any help. We had a wonderful holiday & were impressed by Vintage Travel overall. We will be booking again!!!

Happy to take your money but do zero to help

Happy to take your money and then do zero to resolve issues. Customer service number gives options for emergency or to leave a message out of hours, but when you try to, it loops back to play the same recorded message saying they aren’t open. A chocolate teapot would have been more use than Julie the pollensa in resort rep - total wet wipe. She seemed astonished and offended that we were angry - despite the fact she knew I’d spent the night in the car because the villa was uninhabitable! Despite also knowing our holiday and my son’s birthday were ruined by having to deal with her, Vintage Travel and/or the villa owner ripping us off and treating us like we should be grateful!

Date of experience : 19 August 2023

Excellent reliable service from Vintage Travel

Excellent reliable service as usual from Vintage Travel. Our villa in the South of France was as described by VT, beautifully furnished and very well equipped. In addition we requested additional information prior to booking, which VT provided very quickly and were most helpful throughout. We have previously booked with VT and have no hesitation in using the company again next year.

Thank you for your excellent review and your loyal support. We are always delighted to be of service.

Having used Vintage Travel on many occasions we wouldn’t book a villa holiday through anyone else. Easy booking process and great communication. Great friendly team and easy to contact. 5 star all the way

Outstanding service

Super efficient, friendly and really helpful team, they made everything easy and took all the stress out of booking. The welcome and information packs were excellent, the hire car was spot on and competitively priced. Overall a brilliant holiday thanks to the Vintage Travel team - we will definitely use them again.

We booked Villa Vryonis in Kefalona and had an amazing week

We booked Villa Vryonis in Kefalonia for a weeks break. With regards to Vintage, they were very helpful throughout the process with great up front support through to having a great Rep on the island who visited the Villa on our second day to discuss the island and to ensure we had no problems. The Villa was in a great location with 2 tavernas and a small supermarket within easy walking distance for times we didn’t want to drive and then less than 10 minutes drive to Fiscardo for when we wanted more choice and to get a big shop. The panoramic views from the villa and over the pool were amazing and provided a perfect backdrop for the daily “sundowner”

Date of experience : 27 August 2023

Thank you so much for your review, delighted to hear you had an amazing holiday. We agree that Villa Vryonis has the perfect backdrop for a sundowner or two!

We love Vintage Travel

We love Vintage Travel, we have been booking with them for 15 years and have never been disappointed. The villas are wonderful, the locations always stunning, and the Vintage Travel team are superb and hugely knowledgeable. We are already looking forward to the next holiday.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review! We are delighted, the whole team really appreciates your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

You know you can rely on Vintage

This is the third time we’ve booked a villa through Vintage and we’ve never been disappointed. All of their villas are characterful, with a private pool, and vetted so you know you can rely on them. This year we had amazing views of the sea and surrounding mountains. Vintage’s professionalism has always been impeccable. From the moment our representative, John, made contact with us, we felt reassured. He really knew his stuff, having lived on the island for many years, and had fantastic recommendations. What we love about Vintage - as opposed to package or all inclusive holidays - is that you’re free and independent but you have someone to fall back on if you need help or advice. It’s not in your face.

Thank you for your five star review, we are really delighted you enjoy the experience of travelling with us. We greatly appreciate your feedback.

A great company

We have used Vintage Travel for around 20 years and they are now used by our friends and family. Exceptional service always. Have stayed in villas in Costa Brava, several in Andalucia, Portugal and now, due to advancing years mainly Menorca. All villas are different..some modern some more traditional...all great. We have a holiday booked that should have been 2020, carried forward with no problem to 2021 and now 2022..we hope to be there!!

Date of experience : 15 December 2021

Thank you for your wonderful review and we do hope that you are able to holiday in Menorca next year.

Vintage Holidays are fantastic

I value Vintage Travel as a credible independent dent tour operator. The quality of their accommodation is second to none and you get to visit lesser known areas. Such a sharp contrast to the large mainstream operators (who I avoid where possible). I have travelled with Vintage Holidays before and will do so again. I strongly recommend this company but please leave some availability for me!

Date of experience : 15 July 2023

What a lovely review, thank you very much. We seek out and carefully select houses in areas off the main tourist trails, where it's still possible to discover and enjoy the local lifestyle. We will definitely save availability for you!

Favourite travel company

We have booked with Vintage travel many times and have always enjoyed fabulous holidays. The villas are reliably high standard and the customer service is second to none. During COVID, they have rearranged our holiday bookings multiple times due to travel restrictions. We cannot thank them enough as this has allowed us to holiday with minimal stress over the last two years! We have already booked for 2022 and cannot wait!

Special villa and pool in Crete

This was our first holiday in Crete. We wanted a villa and pool with an easy journey to Chania, and the region's beaches. We found Vintage online and our experience of the booking and preparation was excellent. The guides to Crete were comprehensive and we used our Rep, John, to refine those on the Island. He had a deep knowledge of the area and the practicalities of travelling around. He looked after us very well! For downtime the pool was lovely. Well maintained and in the sun for the bulk of the day. The villa was well appointed, very clean, and had a terrace with a sunset view. Overall a great holiday and we will certainly use Vintage again. Our Samaria gorge walk and boat trip very well organised!

Date of experience : 04 July 2023

We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your holiday to Crete and John our Representative looked after you well. Thank you so much for your lovely review, we really appreciate it.

Another wonderful villa and a fantasic…

Another wonderful villa and a fantasic holiday! The location, near El Gastor in Andalucia, was just breathtaking. Georgina our rep was fantastic and very helpful and the information provided ahead of travelling and in the villa book was so useful. Thank you Vintage Travel - we'll be booking again!

Date of experience : 25 August 2023

Thank so much for your wonderful review, we are delighted to hear you had a fantastic holiday to Andalucía! I will pass on your kind words to Georgina. We look forward to helping arrange many more happy holidays to come!

We were planning our summer holidays…

We were planning our summer holidays many years with Vintage Travel. Exclusive villas for couples, with a view/ infinity pool were exquisite. Above all, Greece are far the most clean and beautiful ones. We are definitely going to plan other holidays with Vintage Travel. Thank you for nice holiday memories!

Wonderful stay in Crete

Wonderful stay in Crete, the pool area and view were just perfect - mountains and sea at the same time. Helpful rep John and the whole experience was so easy to book, thanks.

We are delighted you had a wonderful stay in Crete, many thanks for your review and your kind feedback, much appreciated by the whole team.

Always fantastic

We've used Vintage Travel many times over the years. Italy, France and various Greek islands. Each trip has been fantastic. Each villa beautiful and fully equipped. Communication was never an issue. We are in fact travelling with them again in 2022. I would always recommend Vintage.

We are so pleased to learn your holiday experiences have been so good and look forward to welcoming you back next year.

The village of El Gastor is just off the main road north-west from Ronda to Algodonales and a few kilometres from Zahara de la Sierra. It is also known as the ‘Balcony of the White Villages’ because from the two mountain peaks in its municipality, El Algarín and Las Grajas, there are magnificent views of other little villages in the area and the surrounding countryside.

The region has been settled since prehistoric times and around El Gastor evidence has been found of dolmens, or Megalithic burial grounds. The most famous of these is El Charcón, commonly known as the ‘Tumba del Gigante’. This ‘Giant’s Tomb’ dating from the Bronze Age is formed by three-metre high stone pillars and a nine-metre long passageway, similar to the Dolmen de Menga and others near Antequera. Also fascinating to the visitor because of their size are the two caves lying on the outskirts of El Gastor. The Cueva de Fariña, with its extremely narrow entranceway, was a cave much used by bandits in past centuries. The Cueva del Susto, situated in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, has several galleries leading to an enormous chamber with a multitude of stalactites and a large underground lake.

Things to See

The old Hermanos Palomino mill has been well preserved and, although now under private ownership, can be visited in order to see the vast, revolving circular stones, used to press the olives gathered from the surrounding countryside, and the deposits where the oil was collected. Also of interest is the Museo de Usos y Costumbres Populares, a museum dedicated to El Tempranillo , one of the most famous bandits in 19th-century Andalucía. Situated next to the Town Hall, this museum exhibits ancient agricultural and household tools depicting the traditions and customs of the region and other items used over the centuries.

The most important festivity of the year in El Gastor is the celebration of Corpus Christi in the month of June. On this day, all the inhabitants decorate their streets with flowers, branches and grasses and create floral ‘altars’ outside their houses. Following the morning Mass there is a procession through the village. In the afternoon the Gaita Gastoreña contest takes place. This particular type of gaita is a wind instrument made from the horn of an ox or cow. At the wide end is inserted a short piece of hollow wood into which is placed a thin reed to be used as the mouthpiece. Of Iberian origin and still made today in El Gastor, it is unique in the world.

The gastronomic specialities of El Gastor are its guisote , a tasty stew made with breadcrumbs, wild asparagus and garlic, and also its special chicken dish with almonds. Fresh tomato soup, black pudding, chorizo and chicharrones (pork scratchings) are also very popular.

7 MOST extravagant houses of 19th century Moscow

vintage travel el gastor

1. The Levenson House, Trekhprudnyi Lane, 9

The lantern above the Levenson House

This house, designed by architect Fyodor Shekhtel, was built for Alexander Levenson, the proprietor of a famous Moscow typography, in 1900. The house had space for printing machines, as well as living premises. The highlight of the house is a fascinating roof lantern. Recently, the house was scientifically restored and is now for sale. The 1,000-sq.m. building’s price tag is 1.1 billion rubles (approx. $14.4 mln).

What seems an ordinary house from the outside is really one of the poshest mansions of 19th century Moscow, built for Nikolay Zimin, a major Russian tobacco trader. Built in 1896 according to the project by Edmund Yuditsky, it still houses the original interior decoration. Russian cinema buffs might recognize it from the movie ‘Brat-2’, directed by Alexey Balabanov.

Currently, the building houses the Agency for the Management and Use of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the Ministry of Culture of Russia – some of the foremost specialists in heritage preservation in the country.

The Igumnov House

This house looks like a palace right out of a Russian fairytale, but it was actually built in 1895 (designed by architect Nikolay Pozdneev), at the order of Nikolay Igumnov, a textile tycoon from Yaroslavl.

The bricks were shipped in from the Netherlands, the fascinating porcelain facade tiles made following a special order at the Kuznetsov porcelain factory, the most famous in Russia at the time. The cost of the house was allegedly around 1 million rubles (when 150 rubles was a solid year’s salary). Inside, the 40 rooms of the house were decorated in a variety of styles – from traditional Russian to art nouveau.

This mansion, commissioned by textile industrialist Nikolay Vtorov, was built in 1913. It takes its English name, Spaso House, from Spasopeskovskaya Square, where it is located. It’s a neo-classical recreation of a classic upper-class city mansion of the 1820s, with palladian windows and a perfectly symmetrical interior plan.

Vtorov’s family lived in the house for just 4 years before the Revolution, after which the house was expropriated by the new Soviet government to serve as a reception house for the All-Russia Central Executive Committee.

In 1933, the house became the residence of William C. Bullitt, the first U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union, and has stayed the residence of the U.S. ambassadors ever since. Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan all stayed there when they visited Moscow.

The Ryabushinski Mansion

This mansion, again built by Fyodor Shekhtel, this time for millionaire Stepan Ryabushinsky in 1900-1902, is probably the architect’s most famous work in Moscow. Apart from all the fascinating art nouveau interior decoration and the famous stairwell with a jellyfish lamp, the mansion also housed a secret chapel – the Ryabushinskis were Old Believers, outlawed in Russia until 1905. “I believe that in the whole of Europe there is no house like this,” Ryabushinski said when examining the newly-built mansion.

After 1917, when the Ryabushinsky family fled Russia, the house became the state’s property and, in 1931, writer Maxim Gorky and his family started living there. Gorky didn’t like the mansion at all, calling it “awkward, but fit for working at least”. After Gorky’s death, the mansion became Maxim Gorky’s personal museum, which helped preserve the unique interiors of the house to the present day.

Constructed in 1897 by Pyotr Boytsov, the house was commissioned by a businessman named Sergey Berg. It comprises different styles – gothic, baroque and art nouveau. Berg’s mansion was one of the first Moscow homes to have electricity installed – lighting and an electric doorbell. It was here that the first “electric ball” was held.

The house, which had preserved all its original interior decoration, was renovated in 2016. It currently houses the Italian Embassy in Russia.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

What was their favourite thing about Russia?

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Perfect itinerary for spending a week in Moscow! So many places to visit and it looks like you had a wonderful time. I would love to climb that tower. The views I am sure must have been amazing!

I was lucky enough to see the skyline of Moscow from this TV Tower and it is definitely mind-blowing.

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
