How to Get Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V

Last Updated: January 26, 2022

wikiHow is a “wiki,” similar to Wikipedia, which means that many of our articles are co-written by multiple authors. To create this article, volunteer authors worked to edit and improve it over time. This article has been viewed 60,108 times. Learn more...

Do you want Quiet to join you as a buddy on MGSV missions? To recruit Quiet, you'll just need to defeat her—easier said than done, of course! Without the right equipment and, you’re more than likely to end up a sitting duck in her rifle’s telescopic sights. This wikiHow article will show you where to find Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V, and how to get her to join you.

Preparing for the Boss Fight

Step 1 Develop a Sniper Rifle.

  • Either D-Horse or D-Dog will do fine as buddies for this part of the mission since they’ll have minimal impact on its completion (at least before and during the fight with Quiet).

Get Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V Step 3

Taking Down Quiet

Step 1 Figure out Quiet’s initial sniping position.

  • Don’t worry if you don’t see where she set up her next sniping spot. You can always go out in the open and wait for the white cloud that indicates the location of where she’s sniping.

Step 4 Play the cut scene but don’t pull the trigger.

  • 5 Extract Quiet using the chopper. Since you can’t use the Fulton Recovery System on Quiet, you’ll need to wait for a chopper sent by Ocelot to pick you up. Boarding the chopper together with Quiet will then trigger another set of cutscenes which culminate in Quiet getting detained at Mother Base.

Get Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V Step 8

Deploying Quiet as Your Buddy

Step 1 Go back to Mother Base for Side Op.

  • Bringing Quiet on missions will raise your bond with her and open up development for upgrades to her weapons.
  • One mission that you can farm to raise her bond level with you is Episode 3: A Hero’s Way. Have her take out the commander from a sniping point directly facing his house. Once the commander is eliminated, exit out of the mission zone by helicopter and redo the mission until her bond level gets high enough for you to develop the silenced Guilty Butterfly (extremely useful for non-lethal takedowns of bases and outposts).

The Elder Scrolls: 6 Most Badass Women in the Series

5 bethesda games where a major character dies, lollipop chainsaw repop producer reveals how many costumes there are.

Players have been thoroughly exploring the vast world of the critically acclaimed   Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain since launch, but with a game this massive, it's easy to miss some things.

In fact, it's pretty easy to miss recruiting Quiet early on in Metal Gear Solid 5 , the incomparably dangerous sniper that was revealed to the world in an epic Tokyo Game Show teaser trailer last year. Quiet is one of Snake's most powerful allies in the game, but acquiring her is no easy feat, unless one knows a little trick or two.

This guide will help in recruiting Quiet as well as getting an S rank on Mission 11 in the game, Cloaked in Silence. Following this guide will allow players to recruit Quiet without firing a single bullet, but it will take a couple of supply drops.

Keep in mind that this guide will have some minor spoilers, so reader beware.

1. Finding Quiet

The first step to recruiting Quiet is actually finding her out in the Afghan desert. Don't bother trying to hunt her down right away, as the game will lead Snake to her location naturally.

This comes about during the important Side Op, Extracting Emmerich. This requires players to travel to a power plant in the far north of Afghanistan, and since it's surrounded on all sides by mountains, the only way to get there is by following a very long, winding road from the helicopter drop off point. It's probably best to procure a vehicle or use the horse in order to travel down the road faster. There will be various enemy outposts along the way, so be aware of that. Either infiltrate the outposts and get rid of the enemy presence there, or navigate around them.

Eventually, the road leads Snake to an area called the Aabe Shifap Ruin. Upon entering this area, a cut-scene will trigger, and suddenly Snake will start Mission 11 of the game, Cloaked in Silence. That being said, it's best to just go ahead and finish the Extracting Emmerich Side Op first (which eventually becomes Mission 12), and then return to Aabe Shifap Ruin later.

So, in this initial encounter with Quiet, don't engage her. Use the ruins for cover and continue down the road. Don't go into the open, or she will assuredly take Snake down. It only takes a couple of shots from her sniper to kill Snake, so if she does land a hit, immediately drop to the ground and hide behind something. She won't move around all that much, so don't worry about being flanked or attacked from behind.

Once out of Quiet's kill zone, another cut-scene will play. Go ahead and complete the next mission.

2. How to Defeat Quiet

The next time Snake is in the helicopter ready to tackle a new mission, select Mission 11: Cloaked in Silence. Try to do it during the daytime so that Quiet is easier to spot, and remember that time can be advanced before deploying Snake and also by using his Phantom Cigar.

Approach Aabe Shifap Ruin from the south, basically coming from the same direction Snake did previously. Quiet will be atop the large arch-like ruins to the north. If she proves to be elusive, poke Snake's head out from behind cover long enough for her to shoot, and then duck back down. That should offer a better idea of her exact location.

Once Quiet's location has been determined, prepare the binoculars. Peak above cover just long enough to have her marked. Remember in order to mark enemies players have to zoom in on them with the binoculars. With Quiet marked, her location will also appear on the iDroid map, so get back behind cover and pull out the iDroid.

Instead of going to the actual map itself, request a Supply Drop. When choosing where to have the supply drop land, select Quiet's position on the map. Then just hang tight and wait for the supplies to land on her head. This will cut Quiet's stamina meter in half.

Quiet will then move to another position, but locating her is just as easy as it was before. She usually decides to hang out on a set of ruins just to the west of the arches she was standing on previously. Once she's located, repeat the process to get rid of the rest of her stamina meter.

3. Recruiting Quiet

With Quiet defeated, she will be lying unconscious on a stone path in the middle of the area. Slowly approach her and a short scene will play. Don't press anything and just leave Quiet alone. The helicopter will then arrive for extraction, so pick Quiet up and put her in the helicopter and ride it back to Mother Base. Unfortunately, there is no option to just ship her back to Mother Base via the Fulton balloon propulsion system . Enjoy the cutscenes that follow Quiet's capture.

With Quiet at Mother Base, Snake's band of mercenaries is now significantly more formidable than they were without her, even if she has to spend some time in the brig at first. While her character may have come under fire for being highly sexualized (to the point where her figure actually has " soft breasts "), she's still one of the best characters that players can recruit for Mother Base.

A few missions later, a new Side Op called Visit Quiet will appear. To complete this, go to the Medical Platform at Mother Base. Then take the stairs down that are immediately in front of the helipad. Ocelot will explain Quiet's various abilities. Upon trying to leave Mother Base after this little explanation is over, Quiet will now be a buddy that Snake can take out into the field.

Thanks to its vastness, it's easy to miss some cool stuff in  Metal Gear Solid 5 , so hopefully this guide will make sure players can recruit Quiet as early as possible, and without wasting any precious ammo.

To make sure your  Metal Gear Solid 5 experience is as thorough as possible, stay tuned to Game Rant for more guides, Easter Eggs (like the recently discovered Snake's Birthday ), and everything  Metal Gear Solid 5 .

Quiet is an incredibly effective sniper, who can snap from one vantage point to the next at the blink of an eye thanks to her ability to disappear into thin air. As with every other buddy, the closer your relationship with Quiet, the more commands you’ll have at your disposal, including the ability for her to lay down cover fire as you move from point to point. She will also unlock new weapons which you can purchase in the weapon development menu of your iDroid, including silenced and tranquilizer sniper rifles.

Here’s a few tricks to remember when using Quiet:

How to scout the enemy with Quiet

When you first land, you can send Quiet to scout all nearby checkpoints and objective areas by opening your iDroid and selecting Buddy Support in the Missions tab, or you can do it directly from the map screen, by hovering over an area and pressing up or down on the D-Pad. Quiet will run off and do a relay of the area, marking any enemies, prisoners and objectives she can find. She will also spot any supplies in the area too, which appear as a white hexagon on your map.

Having a solid lay of the land before you’re even close to arriving is a great time saver, and while you’ll still want to scope the place yourself with the binoculars once you get there, knowing where many of the enemies are is a real help.

How Quiet can help Snake complete objectives

If you know your objective is in the southwest corner of an enemy encampment, put quiet on a vantage point to the northeast. That way, when she fires her first round, the enemy will react and move towards her location, giving you an easier route to the mission. This is great for extraction missions, as the prisoner is usually on the floor and unable to move. If your target is a mobile enemy however, they will also move with the squad, so try to prevent Quiet from causing too much trouble, or at the very least have her kill enemies far enough away from the objective so they aren’t affected by her actions.

Keep moving Quiet between vantage points

You can set Quiet up in different locations to ‘Attack’ a location, however, once she’s fired her first round, enemies will begin to try and find her, and are pretty adept at doing so. Constantly shifting her from one sniping point to the next will prevent soldiers from firing on her, and also, give her the angle to shoot those hiding behind sandbags and other cover.

Quiet can wipe out an entire camp without you having to fire around. If you move her around effectively and line up her targets with the binoculars (you’ll see her laser sight tracking what you’re looking at), allowing you to stroll through, gather resources and complete the mission.

If you select “Cover Me”, remember to cease fire

Once you develop a close enough bond, you’ll unlock new commands that you can give in the field. One of the first of these is “Cover Me”. “Cover Me” will give Quiet free reign to fire on anybody in the immediate vicinity in order to protect you, which can be very useful when you’re in a pinch or are looking to quickly complete a task.

However, she’ll continue to kill at will unless you go back into the command menu and tell her to “Cease Cover”, especially if you’re planning on extracting any highly-skilled soldiers from the field.

This can prove a pain if you’re planning on Fulton extracting a mission target if the objective is originally to kill them. Quiet can sometimes complete the mission for you and kill the VIP without your say-so. Remember to alter between the two to avoid jumping back to a checkpoint.

Which weapon should Quiet have on missions?

If you’re on a recruitment drive, then it’s best that Quiet takes a tranquiliser rifle, which is the first weapon available once you develop a bond with her. This way, you can knock out all soldiers in a base and then see which ones you want to Fulton back to Mother Base. Any that you don’t want you can just leave to their nap while you make a quick escape, but not before farming all resources from the area.

For missions where you’re looking to sneak in, there are two approaches: you can give Quiet the silenced rifle, and have her pick off perimeter targets to make your infiltration easier, or give her an unsilenced scope and let her be a distraction while you move through the area.

Having Quiet as a sniper also means you don’t need to bring a sniper in your own equipment loadout.

How to synchronise kills with Quiet

If there are two guards on patrol, you can ask Quiet to “Take Aim” in the command wheel (accessed via L1/LB) on one of them while you line up a shot on the other. As you pull the trigger, Quiet will do the same, meaning there’s no risk of one fleeing or calling HQ to warn of your presence.

Her ability to synchronise kills with Snake is really effective for taking out grouped enemies.

The first unlockable scene is the shower scene. The scene usually plays out with Ocelot throwing a bucket of water on the player if they have not showered for five days in a row. After mission 13, Quiet will interrupt Ocelot and shower with the player if their bond with her is above 60%.

This scene can be unlocked after completing mission 30. Quiet must be in the helicopter with the player when they return to Mother Base, and the player's bond with her must be above 80%.

The bond with Quiet can be increased by going on missions with her. Her behaviour will also change as the bond value goes up. At higher bond levels she will move around and stretch while sitting on the chopper, and look at the player more often.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released on September 1 for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One , PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 , and PC . The game also has a canine companion named Diamond Dog , who the player can rescue as a puppy.

Here Is A Good Way To Get Quiet In Metal Gear Solid V

When you’re stuck in a video game, sometimes the only way through is to get creative.

Related Content

Most people who’ve been following Metal Gear Solid V probably know about Quiet. Even if you have no interest in playing the game, it’s been hard to miss the boobed-out bikini warrior with the sniper rifle who’s been featured so prominantly in the game’s promotion.

Minor spoilers from the first part of MGSV follow!

Quiet is a sniper you can recruit to join you as a “buddy” in the field. She’s very useful in some situations, particularly if you’re taking on tough enemies that you can’t fight directly. There’s a snag, though, because of course there is: To recruit Quiet, first you’ll have to defeat her in battle. It’s the coolest encounter I’ve come across in the game so far.

After you finish a few early side ops, you’ll start to hear Kaz or Ocelot talking about an elusive lady sniper who’s been spotted around Afghanistan killing Russian officers. Once you take a side op that leads you toward the power plant in the northern part of the map (for me it was the stun arm blueprint), you’ll run into Quiet at the ruins en route to the plant. One minute you were heading for a routine side op, the next minute a cutscene is playing and you’re squaring off against Quiet. Neat.

The fight is cool, but it can be tricky. I knew I wanted to take Quiet alive, but didn’t have a nonlethal sniper rifle. Every time I managed to get a bead on her, I then had to close the distance with my tranquilizer pistol and try to get near enough to get off a shot or two before she ran away. It was fun! But hard.

I could pretty easily have taken her out with my sniper rifle, but I was worried that if I did that, I’d kill her and wouldn’t be able to recruit her. (I’ve since learned that’s not the case—you can “kill” her with a regular gun and you’ll still get a choice as to whether to spare her life and recruit her.)

For about 40 minutes, Quiet and I squared off. I got very good at tracking her, watching the dust she kicked up as she ran and listening for her telltale hum. It was a good tutorial for dealing with snipers more generally—I learned how to manage her field of vision and how to predict her shots so that even if she spotted me, she’d miss. But I just couldn’t close with her, no matter how careful I was.

I was running low on ammo, so I called in a supply drop. I set the drop to fall on my position and went into my iDroid to check in on Mother Base. Suddenly… BOOM! My supply drop landed directly on my head , knocking me over.

Like Newton sitting under the apple tree, I had an idea. An idea... that could change the course of human history .

Okay, or maybe it was just an idea on how to beat a boss in a video game. Anyway. I waited until Quiet set up on a new vantage point. I tagged her with my binoculars so that she’d turn up on my map. And then I called in a supply drop directly on top of her.

AND IT TOTALLY WORKED. I couldn’t fucking believe it. The box dropped right on her head. Half of her grey stamina bar was gone in an instant. I waited until she got set again and called in another airdrop. It worked again! Her stamina dropped to zero. Game over. I couldn’t stop laughing.

After the fight, I looked around online and found that the supply-drop tactic is already a semi-known way to defeat Quiet. I also learned that you can just shoot her with regular bullets and still recruit her—if I’d known that, it would’ve saved me some time!

I’m not sure I’d recommend that people use the supply drop trick to defeat Quiet straight away. The protracted standoff against her is extremely cool. But I love it when a game’s simulation is strong enough to let me pull off a trick like this.

I was faced with a problem. I had a weird idea. I tried it, and it worked perfectly. There may be no more satisfying feeling in video games.

Shhh, I’m on vacation. Travelers are on a quest for the quiet

A t home in the New York City suburbs, Oscar Sandoval has lots of friends and an active social life. But when it’s time for vacation, he prefers to keep it quiet. Like, literally.

Sandoval began practicing Zen Buddhism a few years back, and has been on silent retreats to Buddhist monasteries around San Francisco and elsewhere. He’d stroll, sit, do some gardening and generally contemplate life for a week. More recently, he’s done solo backpacking trips across Spain .

“The internal experience varies from times of very little thinking to periods of many thoughts or songs playing in my head," he says. "The utter peace and stillness is impossible to put into words.”

Travel journalist Chloe Berge bemoaned the buzzing interruption of a drone while she was hiking the Faroe Islands ' remote coastline during the pandemic. “The world is getting louder, and it’s increasingly harder to escape the noise, even in nature.”

But it's worth a try, say the travelers who are seeking relief in silence. Or as close as they can get to it.

From serene nature retreats to silent walking, the quest for quietude has become one of modern travel’s latest trends. Conde Nast Traveler said last month it was “the travel trend we’re most obsessed with this year.”

For many, quiet travel goes beyond escaping the cacophony of everyday life while on vacation. It can be a shift toward introspection; a deeper connection with where we are both literally and figuratively.

You might even feel healthier.

In a study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry in late 2022, for instance, mindfulness meditation worked as well as a standard drug for treating anxiety.

“Transformative travel’s a trend we’re tracking for growth,” says Alex Hawkins, editor at the trend forecaster and consultancy The Future Laboratory. “It taps into consumers’ desire for self-reflective tourism experiences."

The “wellness tourism industry," he says, includes "demand for hyper-personal holidays and health-driven stays.”

PEACEFUL PAMPERING

The company Dark Retreats Oregon offers a five-day “Dark Retreat” in Tidewater, Oregon, as “a great space for self-care” through darkness, digital detox and a healthy diet. Participants can keep the lights off as much as they want during their stay, and can also decide how much they talk to others.

BookRetreats, which urges clients to “Unplug. De-stress. Recharge,” offers silent meditation retreats in Bali, Portugal, Mexico and the Netherlands, and closer to home in North Carolina, Quebec and California.

Finland’s Utula Nature offers a silent stay amidst the pines on Lake Saimaa, about five hours from Helsinki.

SERENE STROLLING

Ditching the phone, zipping your lip, and putting on your comfy hikers; that’s the silent walking trend that’s found thousands of friends on TikTok.

Gordon Hempton is an acoustic ecologist in Washington State also known as The Sound Tracker. He’s spent several decades roaming rainforests, coastlines and deserts looking for interesting and often rare nature sounds — sounds you can’t easily hear when there’s a lot of human-made noise. “I care very deeply about quiet,” he says.

He’s a co-founder of Quiet Parks International, a non-profit created to raise awareness of the benefits for both people and wildlife of less noise. Ecuador’s Zabalo River park was the first to receive quiet park designation – it’s not technically “quiet,” of course: Howler monkeys, birds, insects and the thrum of the river provide a natural soundtrack. But the nearest concentration of human activity is a village of roughly 200 people, about 10 miles away.

There are even a couple of urban areas designated as quiet parks – one just outside the bustling metropolis of Taipei , Taiwan's capital. Another is in Hampstead Heath, about 30 miles from central London. The grassy, 800-acre park inspired C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

Quiet Parks International offers experiences like forest bathing, where you open your senses to the meditative and relaxing elements of a walk in the woods.

For those who can't get out to nature, the Quiet Parks website has recordings of wildlife and weather in the rainforest; morning in the West Texas desert; and sounds of day and nightfall in northern Alaska.

LOW-KEY LOST

Black Tomato’s got an interesting proposition for you. The avant-garde travel company offers a trip they call Get Lost. You fill out an extensive questionnaire on what you’re expecting from your escape, but you’ll have no idea where you’re going till they get you there. Environment options are Polar, Desert, Coastal, Jungle or Mountain.

You’re given pre-trip prep advice and navigation instruction, and then, at trip time, all the transfers, gear and mapped-out checkpoints you’ll need. Your progress is monitored by a specialist in the chosen environment and by a local guiding support team. You can bail out at any time.

“We’ve sent clients to Iceland and Alaska,” says Black Tomato’s co-founder Tom Marchant. “We sent one solo traveler to Mongolia." A woman trekked on her own across Morocco’s Atlas Mountains.

Marchant says there's the challenge of managing the environment, but “it’s also a time to truly disconnect from daily life in an entirely new way.”
