Nestled between world-famous vineyards, olive groves, stunning beaches you will find the Waiheke Community Art Gallery. We promote visual arts to an international standard and provide a focal point for arts-related activities. Our diverse range of exhibitions inspires and delights, bringing the best of New Zealand art to the Island and offering the best of Waiheke art to the world. Our wonderful gallery shop features high quality New Zealand ceramics, glass, jewellery and art forms.

The Gallery’s two national award exhibitions attract entries from all over New Zealand. These are the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award (for 2D work) and the Small Sculpture Prize, presented by Davis Funerals.

The Waiheke Community Art Gallery is an incorporated not-for-profit society, established in 1995. As we are a registered charity, all donations to us are tax deductible.

We are open 363 days a year and have three new exhibitions opening every four weeks. Throughout the year we exhibit the work of more than 100 local artists.

• headland Sculpture on the Gulf, our major biennale event and New Zealand’s leading contemporary outdoor sculpture exhibition which is set on the spectacular Matiatia coastal walkway.
• The Waiheke Art Map assists visitors to find artists’ studios and experience their work in situ.

• Opening the doors to Waiheke’s Architectural gems through our summer event the Wonderful Waiheke House Tour.

Some of Waiheke's most beautiful houses are opening their doors to raise funds for the island's art gallery.

The Wonderful Waiheke House Tour is in its seventh year and this year's properties have been chosen for their impressive vistas.

The event is run by the Waiheke Community Art Gallery and includes seven stunning properties, lunch at The Batch winery and a tour of the gallery, which is running two major exhibitions during the tour.

Waiheke Community Art Gallery director Linda Chalmers said this year all the properties boasted sea views and were spread from Oneroa to Onetangi.

The impressive properties are located in Oneroa, Te Whau, Palm Beach and Onetangi to give people a tour of the island as well as the houses.

"Everyone really enjoys this unique day of art and architecture on Waiheke Island back-dropped by stunning coastal views. Each fabulous home has a distinct location, personality and vibe," Chalmers said.

"People on the Fullers bus house tour will visit The Batch vineyard for lunch for the first time this year where they can enjoy its spectacular bush and 360-degree views of the island."

Included in the line-up of impressive homes is a cottage with a "bachy feel".

The cottage has been in the family for 50 years and is owned by French Country founder Sonia West and her husband Peter. The cottage was revamped five years ago and is filled with art and quirky antiques, which she has collected through her homeware business.

Another home is only one of three on Palm Beach that goes directly through from the road to the beach. It has undergone three renovations from its modest start as a fibro bach built in the 1940s to make it what it is now. The property includes a caboose that was originally a sleeping carriage built for the Main Truck Line 113 years ago and is now used as a sleepout.

Also on the trail is a property in Te Whau with an impressive statue at the entrance of the house carved from Oamaru stone, a clifftop property overlooking Onetangi with impressive views, a pool and dramatic high-pitched roofs, a house with three separate two-storey towers, a modern holiday home made from concrete, aluminium and glass on Korora Rd, and an unassuming home on Seaview Rd showcasing the owners' passion for art.

• The tour is on February 20. A ticket for the bus tour, which includes lunch at The Batch, costs $160 or there is a self-drive option for $95 per person. Tickets can be purchased via the art gallery website www.waihekeartgallery.org.nz.

Art in Moscow: Museums, Galleries and Museum-Reserves

There is no strict dress code in Moscow museums. However, if you are going to explore ancient churches and holy places we recommend more conservative outwear. Women should have their heads covered.

All state museums and galleries are free every third Sunday of the month. Some of the Moscow museums are free on holidays, and during the «Museum days» and «Museum Night».

The Moscow Kremlin

Don’t miss a chance to see the very heart of Moscow, the Kremlin, the symbol of the Russian State, one of the greatest architectural ensembles in the world, a treasury of unusual relics and monuments of art. It is situated on a high Borovitskiy hill above the Moskva River, so you’ll be able to see a spectacular view of the city center. The famous Armory Chamber and the Diamond Fund are real treasure-houses, where you can see ancient Russian regalia, ceremonial tsar’s dress, church hierarchs’ vestments, arms, gold and silverware by Russian, European and Eastern masters. The Kremlin is the official President’s residence and remains a gorgeous political landmark. The UNESCO has included the ensemble of the Moscow Kremlin in the World Heritage List.

The State Historical Museum

Ivan Zabelin, Aleksey Uvarov, and several other Slavophiles founded the State Historical Museum in 1872 to promote Russian history and national self-awareness. During its century-long history, the museum has collected more than 4.5 million of valuable items and over 12 million pages of documental archives. Its exhibitions range from relics of prehistoric tribes that lived in the territory of present-day Russia, through priceless artworks acquired by members of the Romanov dynasty. The museum’s historical building which was reconstructed and equipped to meet all the visitors requirements is on the Red Square.

The State Tretyakov Gallery

The State Tretyakov Gallery takes a special place among the national art museums of the world. Established with the efforts of one person, the dedicated collector Pavel Tretyakov, it possesses a unique collection of Russian art, more than 150000 masterpieces, created by famous Russian artists throughout the centuries. The historic building of the State Tretyakov Gallery at Lavrushinski Lane presents Russian art from the 11th through the early 20th century. The state Tretyakov Gallery at Krymsky Val has an excellent collection of Russian art of the 20th century, modern art and holds temporary exhibitions.

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is one the largest European museums of fine art. It has one of the most remarkable collections of fine arts in Russia that consists of artworks from ancient times to the present day. Visitors can see great paintings by world famous artists: Rembrandt, Botticelli, Canaletto, Tiepolo, along with the remarkable collections of Impressionists, Post-impressionists, modernists: Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Picasso and others. Moreover, the museum holds the private collectors’ galleries, many of were inaccessible to public for many years.

Moscow Museum of Modern Art

Moscow Museum of Modern Art specializes in the modern art of 20th and 21st centuries. The famous Russian artist and sculptor Zurab Tsereteli has founded it. The museum is located in four historic buildings in Petrovka Street, Gogolevsky Boulevard, Ermolaevsky lane and Tverskoy Boulevard. The museum’s collection depicts the development of avant-garde. The largest part of the collection consists of masterpieces of Russian artists, but you can also find works by Anri Russo, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso and many others.

The Moscow Planetarium

The Planetarium in Moscow first opened its doors in 1929. After a global reconstruction, it was reopened in 2011. Now it is a multifunctional complex that combines scientific and educational resources: the interactive museum «Lunarium», the Museum of Urania, the Big Star Hall and the Sky Park, family recreation center, that focuses on different age groups. The Moscow Planetarium is one of the biggest planetariums in the world.

The Multimedia Art Museum

Fifty Years of Bond Style Exhibition

The Multimedia Art Museum opened in October 2010 at the base of the Moscow House of Photography. One of the main principles of MAMM s work is complete openness to the new forms of visual expression and for the fresh, innovative trends in the Russian and foreign media art and photography. There are seven floors of spacious exhibition halls and minimalist architecture that is a great font for modern art. The exhibition history of MAMM and Moscow House of Photography counts more than 1300 exhibitions in Russia and abroad. Moreover, Multimedia Art Museum has different educational programs and holds famous Moscow art festivals: Photobiennale, «Fashion and Style in Photography» and others.

Lumiere Brothers Photography Center

This modern photo gallery is located in the very heart of Moscow, next to the Kremlin, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, big art galleries, design studios famous clubs and restaurants. The photography Center houses in an old and huge mansion at the Moskva River Embankment. Lumiere Brothers Photography Center has three huge exhibition rooms, lecture hall, library with an immense collection of rare books in photography and an independent bookshop. The Center is conducting research work, organizing educational projects, providing a base for the future Russian Museum of Photography.

Winzavod (Wine Factory) is the first and the biggest Center of Contemporary Art in our country. It unites all the areas of modern culture: exhibitions, festivals, lecture programs, cinema, concerts, theater premieres. You will find here a big amount of art galleries, artists’ workshops, designers and photographers studios, art cafes, fashion showrooms, a bookshop, children’s studio and many other things. The purpose of Winzavod is to support and to develop Russian contemporary art, art initiatives and help talented young people. Visiting Winzavod you will see the art that defines not only today’s but also tomorrow’s life.

The Manezh was built in 1817 in honor of the 5th anniversary of Russia’s victory in the 1812 war. Then it was called «Exerzierhaus», building, intended for military drills. The building has the unique construction – wooden structure trusses overlap the space of 44.86 square meters without any intermediate supports. After 1917, Manezh served as a garage for government vehicles. And since 1957 it has been continuously used for exhibitions and public events. In 2004, the building was severely damaged by fire. Renovated in 2005 the Manezh doubled its area. Nowadays it is one of the leading Moscow exhibition halls. There are two exhibition spaces, a conference room and a cafe on the third-floor observation deck. The Manezh hosts numerous fairs, festivals, and exhibitions.

Flacon Design Factory

Flacon Design Factory, located in the territory of a former glass factory, has become a pioneer in the revitalization of industrial zone outside the historic center of Moscow. Flacon has become a powerful launch pad for multiple cool projects, self-expression of creative individuals and carrying-out of sociocultural initiatives. No wonder that the atmosphere at Flacon entirely coincides with its motto: «Create as you please!» The Factory includes offices, co-working zone, shops, workshops, exhibition and creative projects spaces. Artplay is near Winzavod in the former industrial space in the area Kurskaya metro station and occupies an area of 75,000 square meters. Artplay, providing a new life to carefully reconstructed factory buildings, has become an important part of the contemporary cultural landscape of the city. Artplay unites designers, architects, furniture, lighting, ceramics, decorative materials shops, involving them in cooperation with each other. Young Moscow galleries, artists’ studios, cafes, bars, bookstores, music club, school of design, theater, children’s art studio are also situated here. Three exhibition halls regularly host contemporary art exhibitions, festivals, video art, alternative music concerts, performances, film screenings, lectures and master classes.

CCI Fabrika

The Center For Creative Industries «Fabrika» is an art space for non-commercial creative projects. Today it is the example of peaceful coexistence of art business, operating enterprise, production, and workplaces for talented people in Moscow. CCI Fabrika is a member of the international network of non-profit cultural centers – Trans Europe Halls. This project is a typical umbrella-center. It is developing in both ways: creating and exhibiting its cultural projects and offering workspaces for other creative groups. Here you can find art studios and workshops of design, architecture, cinema, theater, cartoon animation and contemporary music studios.

Tsaritsyno State Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno State Museum-Reserve is one of the largest historical, cultural, recreation and touristic complexes. Its total area is more than 700 hectares. It is an excellent combination of nature – marvelous rivers, ponds, streams, forests – and scientifically restored and renovated architectural and landscape monuments. The museum’s collection of historical items, exhibitions, and educational programs will be attractive for both national visitors and foreign tourists.

Arkhangelskoye Country Estate

Russian cultural monument is a good sublimation of the stunning beauty of a green space and luxurious collection of paintings, sculptures, unique books and pieces arts and crafts. Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve

A unique historic place – Kolomenskoe – is situated in the picturesque surrounding over the Moscow River banks. A magnificent country estate has appeared at the lands full of legends. Archeological discoveries state that the first settlements appeared here in the VIII century. It is an ancient and uniquely formed place. Today this is a unique complex of cultural monuments of high historical value.

Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve

Museum of Sergiev-Posad is a historical and art reserve. It is located within the unique wall of the St. Sergius Trinity Lavra. This ancient monastery gathered its treasures during centuries from the tsars, princes and boyars donations. Moreover, many art and craft items were made at Lavra’s workshops. Now, the collections of Sergiev-Posad Museum-Reserve include rare, ancient icons, Cyrillic alphabet books, medieval manuscripts, visual art items, gold and silver showpieces.

Wonderful House Tour – A Unique Waiheke Event

Picture a majestic summer’s day, the sea like glass and the ferry skimming across the waters of the Hauraki Gulf heading to Waiheke Island.

Each year in March a select group of the island’s unique properties primp and preen themselves to throw open their doors to the public. This highly anticipated event, in its sixth year – has become much loved in Waiheke Island’s calendar and is always a sell-out.

Homes are spread from Oneroa to Onetangi – be it a cute, quirky batch or a contemporary home with stunning views, the Wonderful Waiheke House Tour is a fun and fabulous day out. This year a limited number of Waiheke Artisan bags will be on sale offering delicious tastes from the island’s artisanal foodies and a great memory of the day.

Some homes will have local architects and designers present. Local designer Irene Crean has a love, flair and passion for gorgeous interiors and will be present to chat about styling secrets.

The Waiheke Community Art Gallery is the organiser of this event which has a dedicated group of followers and has become one of the island’s most popular outings. “Everyone really enjoys this unique day of art and architecture on Waiheke Island against the stunning backdrop of coastal views or fabulous gardens. Each home has a distinct location, personality and vibe so its a great event for both visitors and locals alike” says gallery Director Linda Chalmers.

Opt for a self-drive, or small buses are provided by Fullers and Waiheke Executive Transport. Join the festivities of the day with a boxed lunch in a garden party environment at one of the stunning homes, or choose the vineyard lunch option.

This event is the gallery’s primary fundraiser, enabling the continuation of its lively exhibition programme and other cultural events through out the year. “Although the gallery attracts more than 60,000 visitors annually, it receives very little institutional funding”.

“We couldn’t do without the generosity and support of our home owners who agree to open their beautiful houses for the day” says Linda Chalmers. Central to the event are key sponsors Fullers 360, Waiheke Executive Transport, Waiheke Living along with a dedicated group of volunteers. Other generous sponsors include Be My Guest Waiheke, Oyster Inn, Timmy Smith Jeweller and Waiheke Island Wine Tours.

Tretyakov Gallery: Masterpieces of Russian Art

The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow is one of the largest museums in Russia with over 100 000 works of art - including icons, paintings, drawings and sculpture - spanning the entire history of Russian art. Its collection of Russian realist art from the second half of the 19th century is the best in the country.

Pavel Tretyakov, the owner of a successful textile firm, started collecting Russian art in 1856 and opened  his collection to the public in 1867. After Tretyakov's death the gallery's collection continued to grow rapidly, especially after the October Revolution when museum collections were privatized: art was bought, donated or "transferred" from other museums, private collections, cathedrals and monasteries. The most modern part of the collection, dating from 1950-1990, opened on 25th May 2000.

The gallery itself is a work of art - it was designed in an “old Russian” style by the painter Victor Vasnetsov, some of whose works can be seen in the gallery.

Our knowledgeable guide will take you on a tour of Russian art, and show you how the main movements in art reflect Russian history itself. You will see ancient icons including the “Trinity” by Andrey Rublev, and paintings from the 17 th and 18 th Centuries, a period when Russia started to adopt European fashions in art, as in many other areas. Many of the gallery’s most-loved paintings are from the 19 th Century: you will see Ivanov’s monumental “The Appearance of Christ Before the People”, Surikov’s epic history paintings and Shishkin’s views of Russian nature. You will learn about the various national schools of art that appeared in the 19 th Century, as Russia’s artists drew inspiration from everyday life and from their country’s landscapes, folklore, and history, and the striking avant-garde art of Russia’s Silver Age just before the First World War and the Revolution.

Visitors who are familiar with the history of Western art will find this unique collection, both deeply rooted in Russian culture and recognizably European, a real eye-opener. There is so much to see in this huge collection that we are sure you will want to return!
