Captain Cook Reportedly Acquiring the Caledonian Sky

  • May 21, 2023

Caledonian Sky

Captain Cook Cruises Fiji is reportedly acquiring the Caledonian Sky. According to a local media report, the Fiji Islands-based cruise line will operate the vessel under a long-term charter agreement.

Currently in service for APT Cruises, the 114-guest ship was built in 1991 and originally sailed as Renaissance Cruises’ Renaissance VI.

Later converted into a full-time expedition ship, the vessel has also sailed for several different brands during its career, including Noble Caledonia, Star Cruises and Sun Cruises.

Speaking to FBC News, Allison West, Captain Cook Fiji’s Chief Executive, said that the Caledonian Sky will introduce a “new standard of expedition that has never been seen” in Fiji.

“It’s going to lift it all up in terms of facilities, onboard experiences delivery and also in terms of itineraries and additional locations no one has ever visited,” she added.

According to West, the Caledonian Sky will replace the 168-guest Reef Endeavour – currently the company’s sole vessel – starting in November.

The ship’s yet-to-be-announced itineraries will build on the company’s current offerings, which include three- to 11-night in the Fiji region.

Destinations presently being visited by the Reef Endeavour include Yasawa Islands, the Lau Island Group, Kadavu, North Fiji, the Mamanuca Islands and others.

The new program of the Caledonian Sky is said to expand Captain Cook’s presence further, with itineraries also visiting Tonga, Samoa and more.

With 57 ocean-view suites, the company’s newly acquired ship offers an array of public areas and facilities that include an outdoor dining area, a library, a complete fitness center, a hairdressing saloon and a sun deck.

The Caledonian Sky also features two restaurants, in addition to two lounges – including the Panorama Lounge.

Located on the top floor of the 4,200 ton-vessel, the space is equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows and also offers an open deck with comfortable seating area.

Captain Cook Cruises promises high end itineraries aboard MS Caledonian Sky

Captain cook cruises fiji has purchased  ms caledonian sky. and she is promising brand new high-end expedition cruising. the purchase represents an elevation of expedition cruising in fiji..

MS Caledonian Sky offers a level of luxury and facilities not yet seen in the region.

The boutique, expedition ship MS Caledonian Sky which is known to sail the Kimberley, was sold by APT’s parent company Australian Pacific Holdings.

The ship is set to start sailing Fiji on November 11, 2023, sailing out from Nadi. A three-night sailing begins from $3297 and a seven-night sailing begins from $7693.

Allison Hamworth West, Executive Chairman of Capitan Cook Cruises Fiji says the acquisition is a mark the cruise line’s ambition to achieve a new level of luxury in Fiji.

“MS Caledonian Sky will provide a new era in luxury expedition cruising never seen before in Fiji. So her arrival will provide an opportunity to explore many previously inaccessible parts of Fiji in elegant comfort.

“Opening up new island locations never visited by tourists. And doing it in a sensitive and sustainable way as passengers are guided by our team of Marine Biologists and Cultural Experts.”

What’s new?

They will not be keeping the ship’s current crew in its entirety. However, you can expect an improved cruise-to-passenger ratio as well as more specialised expedition staff.

“Although MV Reef Endeavour (63 rooms) and MS Caledonian Sky ( 57 suites) have a similar passenger capacity. The Caledonian Sky has more crew and a larger crew-to-passenger ratio. So return guests will be able to come back and cruise with the Captain   Cook Fiji family they know and love as well as meet some new faces.

“A bigger galley team, an expedition team of multiple Marine Biologists and Cultural Experts. And, the line will have more hotel crew.”

The luxury MS Caledonian Sky can accommodate 114 passengers across 57 ocean-view cabins. Suites have private balconies, and the ship has alfresco dining and a large sky deck. The small size of the ship enables it to visit more remote islands across the Pacific that aren’t possible for larger ships.

She will replace MV Reef Endeavour , creating a more high-end version of current itineraries. New seven-night Northern Lau and Southern Lau sailings begin in April 2024. And there are 14-night voyages from Lau to Tonga and Samoa.

The ship has 10 zodiacs for expedition activities and there will be a team of marine biologists and cultural experts on every sailing. And they will offer insight into the environments and destinations visited.

Ms Haworth West says: “The arrival of MS Caledonian Sky will see an expansion in our small ship expedition cruise programs. And this allows us to share more exquisite and remote locations with our guests, who’ll travel in elegant comfort.”

Luxury cruise liner MS Caledonian Sky under investigation by Fair Work Ombudsman

A luxury cruise on the ocean ship beneath a clear sky.

A luxury cruise liner that was arrested off Western Australia's north coast over a management dispute is now under a separate investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Key points:

  • MS Caledonian Sky was arrested off the Broome coast late last month amid a Federal Court action
  • In a separate claim, the company that manages the vessel has been accused by an international union of underpaying the crew
  • The company has strongly denied the underpayment allegations

MS Caledonian Sky was arrested by an admiral marshal off Broome after a claim was lodged in the Federal Court of Australia on August 25.

The 110-passenger boat was docked off Roebuck Bay and was required to stay within 12 nautical miles of the Port of Broome.

Crew were allowed to leave the vessel for half-day shore leave if required.

The ABC understands the claim related to a dispute regarding ship management services.

The liner is managed by Australian Pacific Touring (APT) and two international-based ship and staff management companies.

Lawyers acting on behalf of the parties said they would not comment as the matter was before the courts.

A man with thinning grey hair, wearing a windcheater, stands outside and speaks to the media.

Separate investigation underway

The boat has been released from arrest but a maritime union has made accusations of its workers being underpaid.

International Transport Workers' Federation (ITWF) Australian coordinator Ian Bray said he made a complaint to the Fair Work Ombudsman after he allegedly discovered the crew had been underpaid over a six-month period.

"We'll continue to advance the rights of this particular crew and any other …crew that find themselves in these circumstances where they actually are entitled to Australian award wages," he said.

"We'll fight vigorously to ensure that they get them."

The Fair Work Ombudsman said the complaint was being investigated.

"As this matter is ongoing, it is not appropriate to comment further at this time," the agency said.

APT has strongly denied the allegations and criticised the ITWF for making the complaint.

"APT is an Australian family-owned business and has been for almost 100 years," a spokesperson said.

"For more than 40 years we have run a successful Kimberley program and are a major employer in the region and across Western Australia.

"There has never been, nor is there, any avoidance of payment of any wages to the crew.

"APT rejects in the strongest terms the unfounded allegations of wage theft and the baseless criticisms of its practices.

"APT's practices are consistent with industry standards and the applicable laws."

An aerial shot of a port with a long jetty leading to a wharf.

The spokesperson said APT was in the process of finalising the crew wages that were consistent with Australian entitlements.

"APT has kept the [union] and Mr Bray fully informed throughout this process," they said.

"APT has also kept the Australian Marine Safety Authority and the Fair Work Ombudsman properly informed.

"This process is in its final stages and it is expected final adjustments to wages will be made shortly and all relevant parties will be advised accordingly.

"APT is disappointed by the stance taken by the ITWF and the way in which it has misrepresented APT's processes and the current situation."

MS Caledonian Sky is expected to be sold to another cruise company later this year.

Caledonian Sky Review

who owns caledonian sky cruise ship

The all-suite Caledonian Sky emerged from an Italian shipyard in the 1990s. The ship passed through various hands, most recently cruising under the APT banner in the Kimberley before Captain Cook Cruises took the helm of the 90m-long expedition ship in late 2023.

Outside-facing guest suites and public areas across five decks include two restaurants (one indoors, one alfresco), two lounges with bars and a sun deck with sun lounges and umbrellas. The aft marina deck platform is used for embarkation into zodiacs for shore excursions.

Caledonian Sky's Italian heritage and 30-year-plus vintage is evident in its spacious suites lined with timber paneling, polished brass fittings and plush soft furnishings. Fijian artworks by local artisans are gradually replacing bland generic prints adorning walls throughout the ship.

A collection of historic Fijian photographs lining the corridor outside the Panorama Lounge gives the area a museum-like feel. The near-circular Panorama Lounge is bathed in natural light from a bank of windows along with an overhead leadlight dome replicating a compass rose.

There's a small gym, an even smaller massage room and a clinic where medical facilities include an onboard Doctor available 24-hours (fees apply).

Caledonian Sky Deck Plan Covers Five Decks

Caledonian Sky has six decks with five accessible to guests. Castle Deck (Deck 2) has cabins at front and the main dining room at the back. The Caledonian Deck (Deck 3) has cabins, the Pursers and Expedition Team desks and the Caledonian Lounge with its bar, piano, tea and coffee station and plenty of comfy chairs and sofas.

The Promenade Deck (Deck 4) is entirely given over to cabin accommodation with balconies, with the exception of the massage and gym rooms, and there's a smoking area at the aft. The Bridge Deck (Deck 5) is taken up with the Bridge and Officers accommodation, Deluxe Balcony Suites midships and a large alfesco dining and lounge area. The Panorama Deck (Deck 6) has a light-filled lounge bar with tea and coffee station, library, board games and sofas indoors, with a sun deck is furnished with sun lounges and umbrellas.

Guests gather in the Caledonian Lounge for daily briefings, recaps and shore excursions before descending to Deck 2 to board Zodiacs. With two dining areas, buffet breakfast and lunch take place on the alfresco Lido Deck dining area (Deck 5), while dinners are slightly more formal in the air-conditioned dining room (Deck 2). There is one central lift along with a wrap-around stairwell connecting decks two to six. External stairs aft link decks two to five.

Guests are welcome to visit the Bridge during daylight when the doors are open.

Cabins on Caledonian Sky are Generously Sized

Fifty-seven spacious suites across four decks are all outward facing with ocean views through either sliding glass doors, panoramic windows or portholes. Twenty-three suites on the Bridge and Promenade decks have small private balconies with hinged doors which can be opened up if guests are travelling together in adjoining cabins. Two Owner's Balcony Suites each have a massive forward-facing outdoor area large enough for a pair of sun lounges. Ensuite bathrooms are fitted out in marble and some have bathtubs with shower overhead.

There are seven room categories with price variations mostly determined by position (forward or aft), deck level and whether they have a balcony or not. Suites are generously sized and are furnished with ample storage space (some have walk-in wardrobes), twin or queen beds, sitting area and desk with mini-fridge. Suites are equipped with hairdryer, electronic safe, wall-mounted TV and individual air-conditioning controls.

Suites are serviced daily and a nightly turndown service includes a chocolate and printed program for the following day. A laundry service is available (fees apply) on 24-hour turnaround.

Food on Caledonian Sky is Plentiful and Locally Influenced

Food on Caledonian Sky is plentiful with buffet style breakfast and lunch and a-la-carte dinner service. Special dining events are held during each voyage such as island lovo feasts, where villagers prepare food cooked in a traditional fire pit.

Other nights there might be a BBQ buffet on the Lido Deck particularly when the ship is anchored in a picturesque anchorage. Locally caught seafood and fresh topical fruits feature along with local specialties such as kokoda (pronounced ko-kon-da), where fresh fish is marinated in coconut milk, lime and spices.

Bottom Line

Fellow passengers, who is onboard caledonian sky.

Captain Cook Cruises has a loyal following of repeat travelers who are lured by a broad range of cruise itineraries visiting different parts of Fiji. The Fijian-based cruise company has typically attracted guests predominantly from Australia and New Zealand along with Americans and Canadians.

With the arrival of Caledonian Sky and the expansion of voyage itineraries to Tonga and Samoa the cruise company anticipates interest from a broader passenger demographic. On our Ultimate Lau and Kadavu and Remote North cruises, guests varied from twenty-something groups, a family with young children, retired couples and solo travelers.

As is the joy of small ship cruising, we hope to offer the opportunity to visit the Captain and Officers on the Bridge to check the progress of the vessel (subject to weather or security conditions).

Your Dining

It is quite a task to create a dining experience as that found on board our Sky vessels when you are cruising in far-flung corners of the globe, indeed it takes a team of highly talented chefs to deliver fresh, varied dishes no matter where you are at sea. Fortunately, our catering teams are well adapted to the world of small ship cruising where no two days are the same and the menus are often scheduled and tailored around the days’ excursions. With only one sitting and a maximum of just over 100 passengers, the cuisine on board is of a consistent superior quality that befits such vessels. Where possible and when it meets their high standards, our accomplished chefs will obtain local produce in markets. Such purchases enhance the well-stocked larders and enable the chefs on board to exhibit their culinary skills and bring a local touch to the varied menus, emphasising the international expertise of the chefs on board. Afternoon tea and pre-dinner canapés take place every day in either the comfort of the Lounge or out on the Lido Deck when the weather is favourable. Tea and coffee are also available 24 hours a day. Special diets can be catered for with sufficient notice.

In keeping with the informal atmosphere on board, when dining you are able to choose your seating arrangements at your leisure. Whether that be joining a table of four to six other passengers outside on the Lido Deck in the evening’s sunshine or whether you prefer to enjoy meals in the à la carte restaurant. For those travelling alone, our onboard friendly restaurant staff will take care to ensure you are seated with other like-minded travellers. In the main elegant dining room, breakfast is served buffet-style, with certain items cooked to order on request. Lunch and dinner are à la carte with an excellent choice of dishes, with the menu reflecting the daily catch or local delicacies. To enhance your dining experience even further a selection of wines are included with both meals and there is also a comprehensive wine list with a wide selection of new and old world wines from which to choose.

The onboard catering and restaurant staff are experienced at sea and enthuse a passion for superb service. Whether it be ensuring you have an outdoor blanket as you enjoy the crisp sea breeze on the Lido Deck or sharing their knowledge of the characteristics of the days’ wine selections, you will experience a service on board like no other. You may also enjoy sumptuous barbeques on deck whilst at times, the chef will make your dish to order at special pasta or stir fry stations.

Life Onboard

If large resort-style vessels accommodating many thousands of passengers are your ideal, then our ships are not for you as you will not find endless entertainment, round the clock buffets and the people management which is so much a part of today’s big ship on board style. However, if like us you prefer a more peaceful life at sea you will find our flagships the perfect vessels.

When choosing your next voyage the choice of vessels is astounding. You can select a ship carrying in excess of 4000 passengers with impersonal service or join us aboard the MS Island Sky or MS Hebridean Sky where peace, high quality service and attention to detail are the order of the day. We promise there will be no organised entertainment, fancy dress, deck games or any of the usual big ship experiences. Instead, the atmosphere is warm and convivial and more akin to a private yacht or country hotel in which you can learn more about the wonders of nature, culture and ancient civilisations in the company of like-minded people. A little music in the lounge or bar after dinner, Guest Speakers and informative port briefings from our Expedition Leader or Cruise Director and of course good food with wine included at lunch and dinner, all contribute to make any voyage aboard these wonderful vessels a memorable and joyful experience. After a day ashore you will return to the comfort and peace of an exceedingly comfortable ship.

The daily programme on board is in the capable hands of our Cruise Director or Expedition Leader and staff who coordinate with the Captain and Officers to make the most of each day. Briefings and talks will be provided throughout the voyage together with a ‘Daily Programme’ that is distributed every evening to your suite outlining the next day’s activities. Dress on board is casual and relaxed and there will be no ‘black tie’ evenings.

For Your Comfort

MS Island Sky is equipped with the latest safety, navigation and communications equipment along with roll stabilizers to minimize the ship’s motion. During your voyage we hope to offer the opportunity to visit the Captain and Officers on the Bridge to check the vessels progress by charts and learn more about your journey. You will also find on your suite television a navigation channel showing the routing of the vessel as well as the view from the Bridge. On board you will also find a clinic and doctor and a lift that serves all decks. Smoking on board is restricted to a specific area on deck.

AIR-CONDITIONING

The entire ship is air-conditioned. All suites feature individual temperature controls. In order to keep the air-conditioning system working efficiently, please keep doors closed when in use.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The ship uses a public address system to advise guests of all important information and activities during the cruise. Announcements can be heard throughout the public areas of the ship and in all suites.

COMMUNICATIONS

If you wish to contact the ship, please call +1 954 67266785. This is a US number so calls will be charged at an international rate. There is a phone in your suite which has access to an outside line. Outgoing call costs will be advised on board. You can make suite to suite calls free of charge. The ship can be contacted by email at [email protected]. Please indicate the passenger name and suite number in the subject field.

Satellite Internet & Wi-Fi

Connectivity is now an important feature in our lives and we do our best to bring this service to you on board. Complimentary Wi-Fi provided by Starlink is available in the public areas and passenger suites. You will need to bring your own device to connect in these areas. Wi-Fi details, including your unique log in, will be available in your suite. The service provided on board uses direct satellite technology and has a certain amount of bandwidth available. The same level of connectivity and speed that we enjoy at home through cable or fibre-optic based infrastructures cannot be expected on board.

As you traverse the seas and ports, the ship’s antennae have to re-establish connection with the transmission satellites. Signal may also be blocked by mountains, buildings or even local radio frequency regulations. Remote locations out of satellite range, weather on earth or in space can also affect signal strength. Please also bear in mind that the network is shared by everyone on board so congestion can be anticipated which will slow down speeds especially at peak times. The bandwidth available to the ship means that connectivity is best served using text-based communications and simple social media. Some applications which involve downloading large files may not be available on board.

Here are some tips for using satellite Wi-Fi on board:

• Avoid peak times such as the return to the ship after an excursion.

• Always log off the system when not in use to free up bandwidth space for other passengers and to pause your usage allowance.

• Work offline.

• Download any apps you need before leaving home.

• Turn off or disable background app data services and updates – apps that sync in the background can quickly eat up data without your knowledge.

• Disable push notifications as these use a lot of data.

• Remember to bring any charging or data cables required.

• Your Network provider may offer a cruise package but be careful, once the land signal is lost, this will transfer to the satellite signal which will incur greater costs.

• Cruise Terminals ashore often have good land based internet to supplement your connectivity.

• Put your phone on Airplane Mode when not in use to avoid roaming charges from your Network Provider.

• Be careful not to access private accounts such as bank accounts on public Wi-Fi systems.

DAILY PROGRAMME

A Daily Programme, detailing the following day’s arrangements as well as any specific information about the day’s activities is produced on board and delivered to your suite daily.

UV technology has been installed to ensure no risk of transmission via ventilation units. Hand sanitisers are present throughout the vessel particularly at entrances to dining venues and at the gangway. We kindly ask that you ensure to use these regularly. When it is required to bring in enhanced procedures you will be advised in either your pre cruise documentation or on board.

LAUNDRY SERVICE

A laundry service is available on board. Laundry bags and a price list can be found in the wardrobe in your suite. Please complete the laundry list and leave it together with the bag of items to be laundered on your bed. Your laundered items will be returned within 24 hours. There are no public launderette or ironing facilities on board. In the interest of safety we ask that you do not use an electric iron in your suite. An ironing service is available at reasonable cost. Dry cleaning facilities are not available on board. In the interest of the environment, towels will not be automatically changed every day. We ask that you put used towels on the bathroom floor if you wish them to be changed for fresh towels. Towels left hanging on the towel rack will not be changed.

All passenger decks can be reached by lift. Please do not use the lift in the case of a fire or an emergency.

On board the ship, any liquids, cosmetics, paper(s) and perishable items left behind will be disposed of immediately. Any books left on board the ship will be incorporated into the ship’s library or donated to charity. Meet the Norwegian-owned cruise challenger to Carnival and Royal Caribbean that just raised $1.54 billion

a cruise in the ocean

Viking had humble beginnings.

The now-listed cruise line was once just a venture by “two guys with two mobile phones and four river ships,” as the company’s CEO, Torstein Hagen, puts it in Viking’s prospectus .

But a lot has changed in 27 years. Now, the Norwegian-owned, Bermuda-based business has a staff of 10,000 catering to guests with a taste for the finer things in life.

The cruise operator, which made its name in European river tours, launched its initial public offering at the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday. It raised $1.54 billion , according to Reuters, making it the biggest listing in the U.S. this year.

Viking rebounded strongly after the COVID-19 pandemic decimated cruise travel and its public listing comes as luxury consumers are spending more on travel and less on shopping. Some of Viking’s competitors, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, have seen record demand for cruises—opening a world of opportunity for the smaller company.

Viking’s beginning

Viking was founded in 1997 by Hagen, who controls most of the company with his daughter, Karine Hagen.

From the start it aimed to give travelers an immersive experience in local cultures as they toured in one of its four river vessels. In the past three decades or so, Viking has expanded its fleet to 92 ships offering three types of experiences via rivers, oceans, and expeditions.

The company has also benefited from some savvy marketing plays: It sponsored PBS Masterpiece series, such as Downton Abbey , and offered themed trips linked to those shows.

Between 2015 and 2023, Viking’s revenue grew at a compound annual rate of 14.4%, outpacing the rest of the cruise industry in the river and luxury ocean segments during this period, the company said in a public filing .

Viking has carved its strategic niche among older, well-off customers, a group it believes is “underserved.” These are not boozy party boats, and there are no kids allowed.

“Our target demographic has greater financial stability, which can make them more resilient to economic conditions and more willing to invest in high-quality travel experiences,” Viking said.

And that’s the space it hopes it can dominate, with the help of its IPO funds.

The Viking founder and road ahead

Hagen didn’t enter the world of cruises till the 1970s.

A physics major in school, Hagen earned an MBA at Harvard University before entering management consulting. He dabbled with entrepreneurship a few times before finally succeeding, Bloomberg reported .

When business for Viking’s river cruises, its first service, began to pick up, Hagen expanded to offer journeys worldwide—from expeditions in Antarctica to river cruises in Vietnam.

Viking is on an expedition of its own now that its shares are traded. Last year, the cruise line hosted close to 650,000 guests and generated $4.7 billion in revenue, up by almost 50% from 2022. Its underlying profits were $1.1 billion for the same period, according to Viking’s prospectus.

The cruise company is still much smaller than rivals like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian. But it’s a global leader in some segments, such as luxury ocean cruises.

Following a strong open, Viking’s market valuation has reached more than $10 billion, putting Hagen’s wealth at $5 billion. As the appetite for luxury travel builds , Viking is ready to ride the wave.
