Regarding to Judas Priest 50 heavy metal year tour, Rob Halford said this:

“We are gonna play live because there is all this roar: How are we gonna do it? Because we want to try and make the best things happen. So the best things to happen are to bring in all of the people that are included in the induction – which includes, obviously, K.K. and Les, and Dave. So, we’ve been able to work things out, so we will be playing live. We’ve got, like, eight minutes and 24 seconds and a half-second to play live.

We’ve got a couple of cool things that are gonna take place on the night that will be held under wraps like most people do because you don’t want to give everything away. But yeah, look: A bunch of guys from the U.K., from the West Midlands, a Birmingham band of heavy metal, is being inducted into this great institution. So we’re gonna make the most of it and have a great night out and live a lot of metal memories.”

Watch JUDAS PRIEST Perform In Youngstown, Ohio During 'Firepower' Tour

British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST played the second show of their "Firepower" world tour Thursday night (March 15) at Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio. The trek is the band's first since guitarist Glenn Tipton announced that he was retiring from the road due to his battle with Parkinson's disease. He is being replaced on tour by "Firepower" album producer Andy Sneap , also known for his work as the guitar player in NWOBHM revivalists HELL and cult thrash outfit SABBAT .

JUDAS PRIEST 's setlist was as follows:

01. Firepower 02. Running Wild 03. Grinder 04. Sinner 05. The Ripper 06. Lightning Strike 07. Bloodstone 08. Saints In Hell 09. Turbo Lover 10. Angel 11. Evil Never Dies 12. Some Heads Are Gonna Roll 13. Breaking The Law 14. Hell Bent For Leather 15. Painkiller

16. The Hellion / Electric Eye 17. Metal Gods 18. You've Got Another Thing Comin' 19. Living After Midnight

Fan-filmed video footage of the show can be seen below.

Tipton was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 10 years ago, but only recently announced he was going to sit out touring activities in support of "Firepower" . The guitarist, who is now 70 and has performed on every PRIEST album since the band's 1974 debut set, "Rocka Rolla" , is not quitting the band, but simply cannot handle the rigorous challenges of performing live.

Asked how JUDAS PRIEST came to choose Sneap to step in for Tipton on the band's tour in support of "Firepower" , bassist Ian Hill told veteran Japanese rock journalist Masa Itoh : "It probably came from during the recording of the album. Andy is a very good guitarist, an excellent guitarist in his own right, and I think Glenn got to know Andy and got to trust Andy , which is very important. We wanted someone who we knew as well, if at all possible. The last thing you want is somebody coming in with their own baggage, if you know what I mean. And we can trust Andy to do a good job, and I think he'll do justice to the songs. And that was the main thing — I think it was the familiarity with Andy . We had great respect for him — before we met him, we had great respect for him. But with the work he did on the album — I mean, it sounds phenomenal; he did a tremendous job with that. We're doing songs off the new album, which he is totally familiar with, and he knows a lot of the parts anyway from that. And he's also a PRIEST fan — he's been listening to us for years — and he fits the slot perfectly. I think he'll fit in and I think he'll do a tremendous job."

"Firepower" was released on March 9 via Epic . The follow-up to 2014's "Redeemer Of Souls" was recorded by Sneap , the band's longtime collaborator Tom Allom and engineer Mike Exeter ( BLACK SABBATH ). The cover artwork for "Firepower" was created by the Chilean/Italian artist Claudio Bergamin .

The North American leg of the "Firepower" tour will wrap on May 1 in San Antonio, Texas.

Exploring the Songs on Judas Priest's "Firepower Tour" Setlist

"That’s the room where Glenn [Tipton] woke me up, because my bedroom was above that room, and Glenn was clanging out the chords to ‘Living After Midnight’ at 4 o’clock in the morning. He woke me up, I came downstairs, and said, ‘Glenn, it seems like you’re living after midnight down here.’ And he said, ‘That’s a great title for this song!'"

Judas Priest’s ‘Firepower’ Finds Metal Gods Hitting Another Creative Peak – Album Review

Forty-eight years and eighteen albums into Judas Priest ’s career, and -- against all odds -- the Metal Gods are still in powerful form.

Four years after Redeemer of Souls , Priest re-enlisted the classic production duo of Tom Allom and Mike Exeter, adding modern whiz Andy Sneap to the fold, to ensure Firepower blazes with a slick, modern and punchy production without sacrificing their classic metal sound. The result is a diverse album, ranging from Painkiller -esque hard chargers to sweeping, majestic epics that harken back to iconic tracks like “Beyond the Realms of Death” and “Blood Red Skies.” The arrangements are sometimes anthemic and to the point, adventurous and exploratory at others, demonstrating that the band’s drive to challenge themselves as writers has not waned over the years. Clearly, they are striving to add to their legacy rather than coast on it, remaining a potent force among the modern heavy metal landscape.

Firepower , and its fourteen tracks which span fifty-eight minutes, is Judas Priest’s finest work since reclaiming their sound on the sonic wrecking ball that was Painkiller . It establishes a familiar riffing ethos immediately with the title track opener, working in leads to accent the rhythmic barrage. The twin guitar attack that defined the band -- and early heavy metal -- aren’t as present here as they’ve been in the past, but Richie Faulkner truly establishes himself beyond any doubt as a worthy replacement for K.K. Downing . He’s reignited the band onstage over the years; here, he makes his greatest studio contributions yet with simple but daringly effective leads (and plenty of divebombs!) to add flourishes to moments on “Lightning Strike” (a song deserving of a spot on any greatest hits comp) and the grandiose “Traitors Gate,” to name a few highlights.

The album has a modern feel; it won't feel out of place on your "Best Metal of 2018" Spotify mix. The choruses often utilize rhythm-intensive, lunging riffs to spike the adrenaline in favor of sustained chords and gleaming twin melodies of the classic years. When used properly (“Firepower,” “Evil Never Dies,” “Traitors Gate”), they add a newfound heaviness to Priest’s sound, aligning them with today’s scene. The rock-steady, grinning opening of “Evil Never Dies,” where Rob Halford declares “ The Devil’s moved from Georgia, his mission’s still the same ,” (a cheeky nod to the Charlie Daniels Band classic “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”) nearly gives way to arena territory, but it’s quickly cut down by the musclebound, sliding rhythms of the chorus, keeping the intensity of the album in the red just three tracks in. Meanwhile on the heroic, galloping “Traitors Gate,” the singer discharges his best performance of the album and the bottom-heavy refrain packs the might needed to counter the more traditional riffing aesthetic.

These choral elements also work against some otherwise standout songs. “Children of the Sun,” with its slugging, Black Sabbath , Dehumanizer -esque tectonic riffing thunder and brilliantly composed back half, is hampered by an all too simple, underwhelming rhythm. “Necromancer” suffers the same fate, but Halford’s affinity for horror fantasy redeems the lackluster refrain.

The frontman has discussed being pushed to do multiple takes, multiple times, by the production team, during the making of Firepower . But the endless vocal takes seem to have brought the best to the surface. This is his best work since the 2002 Halford album Crucible . The Metal God’s enunciation is pristine (you can almost hear the spit spray out of his mouth and onto the mic) and there’s a raging confidence behind his delivery with more gusto than the competent but fairly safe Redeemer of Souls . He doesn’t tee off with his famed falsetto shrieks nearly as often as he used to, but in the rare instances where he does, it demolishes any doubts that Rob Halford can still deliver. Emotion runs high in every line from the spotlight vocal on the reflective closing ballad “Sea of Red” to the eerie shriek of “ You are the reason I feel dead ” on “Children of the Sun.”

Perhaps it’s the lyrics that have provided that extra gusto that was missing on previous albums. Thematically, Firepower is rooted in the current day as connections can be made to ongoing political and social strife around the globe whether it’s looking at a world in turmoil on “Lightning Strike” or the insatiable force of wickedness on “Evil Never Dies.” There’s nothing mentioned outright in the lyrics, but there’s dots to be connected if you dig around enough, and that's a defining quality of timeless music.

Firepower really finds all of Priest’s members committing career performances. Never a flashy player, Ian Hill remains the anchor of the band’s thunder-forged sound, his bass forever fused to his hip as if it was a bodily extension. His rhythmic counterpart, Scott Travis , elevates his game here with subtle brilliance. The China cymbal smashes in the chorus of “Lightning Strike” make a great song even greater with just that small touch. Elsewhere, he leads with clever kick patterns and even on songs like “Spectre,” just one extra kick beat brings out a whole dynamic behind the line “With the blade held tight.” During “Rising From Ruins,” a cinematic and empowering song that surges with an anthemic refrain and layers of vocal harmonies, his surgical, rolling fill following the climactic solo buildup brings the song back home to the refrain to close out the track. It doesn’t sound like much, but it showcases Priest's ethos of paying attention to every sonic detail.

After nearly five decades of delivering the goods, Judas Priest could have coasted on their reputation on a new album, but they still have their ear to the ground of modern metal. They've crafted a record that can confidently stand alongside their most esteemed works without sounding dated or like self-parody. We’ll all have our favorite songs, and, in turn, some gripes, but for now let’s enjoy the fact that Priest are still with us, still committed to making seminal new music. With the news of Glenn Tipton’s decision to step away from touring as he continues to battle Parkinson’s Disease, who knows if we’ll ever get another chance to hit "play" on a fresh batch of Priest tunes ever again? We can spend the next five decades debating Firepower . But for now, the Hell Patrol still rides, sworn defenders of the faith and guardians of heavy metal.

Judas Priest 1984 to 2024 Set List Comparison: 40 Years of Steel

Judas Priest  kicked off the North American leg of their  Invincible Shield tour on Thursday at Wallingford, Connecticut's Oakdale Theatre, delivering a blend of mega-hits, deep cuts and new songs off their 19th album.

You can see the set list below.

The  Invincible Shield tour comes shortly after Judas Priest's 50 Heavy Metal Years tour , proof of their status as a pillar of the genre. Several songs in the band's current set lists have been mainstays for decades, a testament to their enduring popularity. In fact, a look at Priest's set list from exactly 40 years ago — when the band was at its commercial peak — shows several early-career classics that are still whipping audiences into a frenzy today.

On the other hand, Judas Priest has never been a band to phone in identical set lists on subsequent tours, nor have they allowed themselves to be relegated to "nostalgia act" status. Since their mid-'80s heyday, they've released several beloved albums and have updated their set lists accordingly, while also incorporating a variety of deep cuts and spotlighting their latest releases on the road.

Read on to see how Judas Priest's April 2024 set list stacks up against their April 1984 set list.

What Are the Biggest Differences Between 1984 and 2024?

Judas Priest was in the midst of their sprawling Metal Conqueror tour in support of Defenders of the Faith when they hit Memphis, Tennessee's Mid-South Coliseum on April 18, 1984. They dedicated nearly half of their 20-song set to the album, which had hit shelves three months earlier. The only song Priest didn't play off the 10-track LP was "Eat Me Alive."

In comparison, the band's April 18, 2024 show only featured three songs from the band's most recent album: "Invincible Shield," "Crown of Horns" and "Panic Attack." That's par for the course for most bands these days, particularly legacy acts with extensive catalogs and plenty of hits and fan favorites.

Watch Judas Priest Perform 'Invincible Shield' on 4/18/24

Which Songs Have Stayed the Same?

Judas Priest's April 2024 set shared eight songs in common with their April 1984 set.  British Steel hits "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight" were present at both, as were  Screaming for Vengeance classics "Electric Eye" and "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." The Metal Gods also retained "Hell Bent for Leather" and the Sad Wings of Destiny  epic "Victim of Changes," as well as their adrenalized cover of  Fleetwood Mac 's "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)." The final — and arguably least expected — carryover from their 1984 set was the  Defenders of the Faith single "Love Bites."

Watch Judas Priest Perform 'Love Bites' in 1984

Which Judas Priest Songs Have Become Set List Staples Since 1984?

One of the most notable differences between Judas Priest's 1984 set list and their 2024 set list is the addition of several hits written in the interim. They've routinely played the synth-driven " Turbo Lover " since releasing it in 1986, along with various songs off 1990's career-revitalizing  Painkiller . (This time, the title track made the cut.) Priest also kept "Lightning Strike," the lead single off 2018's  Firepower . Although the album isn't that old yet, it's been received well enough by fans and critics that it's safe to assume several of its tracks have earned "modern classic" status and will be in Judas Priest's set lists for years to come.

Watch Judas Priest Perform 'Painkiller' on 4/18/24

Best Deep Cuts From Judas Priest's 2024 Shows

Despite amassing a slew of hits over the past several decades, Judas Priest still makes room for some lesser-known gems in their set lists. Their Wallingford show featured the fairly rare "Love Bites," which, prior to 2024, hadn't appeared since 2015 (and prior to 2014, they hadn't played it since 1986). The band has also unearthed  British Steel cut "You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise" this year for the first time since 2010, along with  Stained Class rarity "Saints in Hell," which didn't receive its live debut until 2018.

After more than a half-century, Judas Priest clearly still finds pleasure in shaking up their set lists — ensuring that as long as they stay on the road, their fans will be there with voices raised and devil horns held high.

A t their third show on the world tour supporting their new album Invincible Shield , Judas Priest made some major setlist changes. They dropped five songs and added in four others, including one that hasn’t been played in 15 years as well as the live debut of two tracks.

At the tour opener and following gig, Priest performed 18 songs spanning much of their career, which now rests at a whopping 19 albums.

However, on March 15 in Dublin, Ireland and two nights later in Bournemouth, England, the metal legends cut the set down at 17 songs.

What Songs Were Added to the Set?

Of the four songs added to Judas Priest’s set, two were performed for the first time ever. “Sword of Damocles,” taken from 2014’s Redeemer of Souls was one of them, the other being the Invincible Shield single “Crown of Horns.”

“Crown of Horns” (Invincible Shield) — live debut

Elsewhere, Priest played the British Steel cut “You Don’t Have to Be Old to be Wise” for the first time in 15 years. It’s the second least played song live off that classic 1980 album, so it’s quite the rarity indeed.

Additionally, the Sin After Sin opener “Sinner” returned to the set for the first time since 2019.

Fan-filmed footage of these two songs can also be viewed below.

What Songs Were Removed From the Set?

Of course, adding songs into the set means have to remove others in order to make room for those inclusions.

One song from Priest’s two most recent albums ( Firepower and Invincible Shield ) got the axe, as well as some of the band’s most battle-tested classics. Unfortunately, “Victim of Changes” was, umm… a victim of changes and was dropped as well.

The following five songs were part of the first two shows on the tour, but not the next two:

・“Trial By Fire” ( Invincible Shield )

・“Lightning Strike” ( Firepower )

・“Metal Gods” (British Steel)

・“Victim of Changes” ( Sad Wings of Destiny )

・“Beyond the Realms of Death” ( Stained Class )

You can compare both setlists directly below. Somehow, Rob Halford is still singing “Painkiller” deep into the set, right before the encore, at 72 years old. That’s why they call him the Metal God!
