Insure Your Railway Travel With Just 45 Paise For Claim Up To Rs 10 Lakh, Here's How

The option of railway travel insurance is available on the website and app.

Many passengers are unaware of this insurance cover available for just 45 paise to avail themselves of financial protection during accidents.

Train accidents are not a new thing and we see or hear about them almost daily. In an unfortunate incident on May 19, three passengers were injured when an iron pillar fell on the Shalimar Express while it was passing through Urkura railway station near Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

A railway official said that the incident took place around 9.30 in the morning when Shalimar Express was en route to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai). The injured passengers have been admitted to the hospital. Such incidents highlight the importance of railway travel insurance, a facility provided by the Indian Railways to compensate passengers in case of death or injury. The benefit of railway travel insurance is available only to those passengers who have taken insurance while purchasing the ticket. The insurance premium is only 45 paise and offers coverage up to Rs 10 lakh. But most of the passengers are unaware of the scheme.

Railway Travel Insurance is available exclusively to those passengers who book railway tickets online. Those purchasing tickets from the counter or travelling in general compartments do not have access to this insurance. This insurance is optional, which means whether to take it or not depends on the passenger.

If you have railway travel insurance, the insurance company compensates for the loss suffered by the passenger in a train accident. In case of the death or complete disability of a passenger in a train accident, an insurance amount of Rs 10 lakh is provided. In cases of permanent partial disability, an insurance amount of Rs 7.5 lakh is given to the passenger. At the same time, in case of injury, it offers Rs 2 lakh for the treatment expenses.

How to avail of Railway Travel Insurance?

To avail of the Railway Travel Insurance, passengers have to opt for optional insurance while booking tickets online, irrespective of their travel class. Only 45 paise will be charged to you for the insurance. On choosing the insurance option, a link will be sent to the passenger’s email and mobile number to fill out the nominee details. Having a nominee in an insurance policy makes it easier to get an insurance claim.

How to Get IRCTC Travel Insurance

IRCTC, which stands for Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, offers travel insurance to its passengers for a safer and more secure journey. The insurance covers various unforeseen events, such as accidents, theft, and loss of luggage, that may happen during the train journey. In this article, we’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to get IRCTC travel insurance.

Step 1: Visit the IRCTC website

The first step to getting IRCTC travel insurance is to visit the official website of IRCTC . Once you’re on the homepage, click on the ‘IRCTC insurance’ tab, which is located on the top right corner of the page.

Step 2: Enter your PNR number

After clicking on the ‘IRCTC insurance’ tab, you’ll be redirected to a new page where you’ll be asked to enter your PNR number. PNR, or Passenger Name Record, is a unique reference number that is assigned to each passenger and is printed on the train ticket.

Step 3: Select the insurance option

Once you’ve entered your PNR number, you’ll be presented with two options for insurance – ‘Optional Travel Insurance’ and ‘Mandatory Travel Insurance’. The ‘Optional Travel Insurance’ option is available for passengers who want to purchase insurance voluntarily, while the ‘Mandatory Travel Insurance’ option is applicable to all passengers except for those who have already purchased insurance from any other source.

Step 4: Make the payment

After selecting the insurance option, you’ll be directed to a payment gateway where you’ll need to make the payment for the insurance. The insurance premium is calculated based on the fare of the ticket, and the minimum amount is Rs. 0.49.

Step 5: Receive the insurance policy

Once you’ve made the payment, you’ll receive the insurance policy in your email inbox. The policy will contain the details of the coverage, including the sum assured, the duration of the coverage, and the terms and conditions.

Getting IRCTC travel insurance is a simple and hassle-free process that can be completed in just a few minutes. By purchasing travel insurance, you can protect yourself from the financial losses that may arise due to unforeseen events during the train journey. So, the next time you book a train ticket on IRCTC, make sure to opt for travel insurance for a safer and more secure journey.

IRCTC Travel Insurance: Everything You Need to Know

Most people who book tickets via IRCTC know about the optional travel insurance offered by IRCTC. This travel insurance costs almost nil and should be selected by all the people booking railway tickets on IRCTC. This travel insurance provides cover in case of any injury or death during a train journey.

Many individuals do not consider opting for travel insurance during domestic travels, but the recent train accident at Balasore district in Orissa has forced us to rethink safety during travel insurance. Accidents can happen, so it is important to have travel insurance. When Indian Railways is offering travel insurance at almost nil, you must select it while booking the train ticket.

While booking a train ticket, it asks to select the insurance policy for the journey. This is optional, so you need to manually select the check box while booking the ticket. The Tavel insurance costs just Rs. 0.35 per passenger. Currently, it is being offered at no additional cost.

After you book the ticket, you will receive the policy information through SMS and email with a link to file the nominee details. In case someone didn’t file the nomination details, the settlement will be made with legal heirs, if the claim arises.

What Is Covered Under Indian Railway’s Travel Insurance?

This travel insurance covers five types of incidents which are uniform for all classes:

• Permanent Total Disability
• Permanent Partial Disability
• Hospitalisation expenses
• Transportation of mortal remains

Eligibility for IRCTC train travel insurance

• Any Indian citizen who books the train E-ticket through IRCTC official website can opt for train travel insurance.
• Children below 5 are not eligible
• Foreigners cannot apply for the same.

The claim procedure & documentation

The Insured person, his nominee, or a legal heir can submit the documents at the nearest office of the Insurance Company within 4 months from the date of the train accident.

Documents needed in case of death claim

• Report of the Railway Authority confirming the accident of the train or untoward incident
•  Report of the Railway Authority carrying the details of the passengers declared dead.
•  Duly Completed Personal Accident Claim Form signed by Nominee / Legal Heir along with the NEFT mandate details & canceled cheque
•  Photo identity proof of the nominee
•  For Death Claims, the claim will be settled only to the nominee declared at the time of buying insurance through the IRCTC portal
•  In the absence of a nominee, the claim will be paid to Legal Heir only – as per the Legal Heir / Succession Certificate.

Documents needed in case of Disablement Claim:

•  Report of attending doctor confirming the extent of disability.
•  Medical bills corresponding to doctor’s prescription.
•  Duly Completed Personal Accident Claim Form signed by insured / Nominee
•  Attested copy of disability certificate from Civil Surgeon of that Hospital in which the treatment has undergone stating the percentage of disability.
•  Attested copy of FIR.
•  All X-Ray / Investigation reports and films supporting disablement.
•  Claim form with NEFT details & canceled cheque of the beneficiary
•  Photograph before & after disability.

In case of Hospitalization Expenses for Injury

•  Discharge summary
•  Original Hospital Bills and medical bills corresponding to the doctor’s prescription
•  Advance and final receipts (All receipts shall be numbered, signed, and stamped)
•  Prescriptions for medicines
•  Diagnostic Test Reports, X-Ray, Scans, ECGs, and others including doctor’s advice demanding such tests)
•  Cash memos/bills for medicines purchased from outside.

IRCTC: What is the claim procedure & documentation

• The Insured or his nominee or legal heir shall deliver to the nearest office of the Insurance Company, not later than 4 months from the date of occurrence of the Insured Event, a detailed statement in writing as per the claim form and any other material particular, relevant to the making of such claim.
• The Insured or his nominee or legal heir shall tender to the Insurance Company all reasonable information, assistance and proofs in connection with any claim hereunder.
• (ii)Proof in accordance with the policy details shall be furnished to the Insurance Company in connection with all matters upon which a claim is based.
• Report of the Railway Authority confirming the accident of the train or untoward incident
• Report of the Railway Authority carrying the details of the passengers declared dead.

Booking Train Tickets? Here’s How IRCTC’s Travel Insurance Option Works

Indian Railways allows a passenger to get an insurance cover of up to Rs. 10 lakh on online train bookings via its e-ticketing arm IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation). The premium for such an insurance cover is 49 paise per passenger inclusive of all taxes, according to IRCTC’s website – irctc.co.in. The IRCTC travel insurance scheme is offered to potential passengers on an optional basis, however, if the option is exercised, it is compulsory for all passengers booked under one PNR (Passenger Name Record), according to the IRCTC website. While booking train tickets on IRCTC, through its website or mobile app, users can find the option under the “Travel Insurance” section.

Here are 10 things to know about IRCTC travel insurance scheme:

1. The optional insurance scheme is applicable only for Indian citizens who book their e-tickets through either the IRCTC website or its mobile app.

2. In case a passenger opts for insurance , the claim/liability is applicable between the insured and the insurance company.

3. The coverage for the IRCTC travel insurance scheme is applicable for each passenger under the PNR in case of death, permanent total disability, permanent partial disability and hospitalization expenses for injury and transportation of mortal remains following rail accident or untoward incident, according to the IRCTC website.

4. The travel insurance scheme is kept uniform for all classes.

5. On opting for the insurance policy, the customer receives the policy information through SMS and on the registered email IDs, directly from insurance companies along with the link for filling nomination details. The policy number can also be viewed from ticket booked history from the IRCTC page.

6. After the booking of ticket, the nomination details are supposed to be filled at respective insurance company’s website. In case nomination details are not filled, then the settlement is made with legal heirs, if the claim arises, according to IRCTC .

7. In case of short termination of trains due to any reason, if the passenger opts for the alternate mode of transportation arranged by railway up to the destination station, then this part of the journey of the passenger is also covered under the policy taken by the passenger.

8. In case of diversion of train due to any reason, the coverage is applicable for the diverted route.

9. Once the premium is paid by the passengers no cancellations is allowed. Accordingly, no refund of are made in all cases including wait-listed ticket.

10. The optional travel insurance is, however, not provided for the children below five years of age, according to the IRCTC portal.

IRCTC train travel insurance: Know how to claim, benefits and more

While irctc offered this benefit at a near-zero premium of 68 paise, the rules have been changed from september 1, and it is not free anymore..

New Delhi: The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation recently changed its rules regarding travel insurance. While not many people care about travel insurance when travelling on a train, it is ideal that you focus on it, considering that it will get you an insurance coverage up to Rs 10 lakh in the event of a mishap or accident.  

While IRCTC offered this benefit at a near-zero premium of 68 paise, the rules have been changed from September 1, and it is not free anymore. Now, it is neither mandatory nor free and you will have to opt for it.

In case you are booking railway tickets on the IRCTC app and website, you will come across the option ‘Travel Insurance’. You can use this option to choose whether you want an insurance or not. And since the cost of insuring yourself is just 68 paise, there is no reason why you should not opt for it.  

What do you get?  

Train travel insurance provides a coverage of Rs 10 lakh for death or any permanent disability caused due to any train accident or other untoward incidents. Worth mentioning that for permanent disability, you will get an insurance cover of Rs 7.5 lakh. This is in addition to the Rs 2 lakh hospitalisation expenses that it provided.

Individuals should note that a train travel insurance is applicable in the event of acts such as accident, robbery, dacoity and other untoward acts during a train journey.  

Who is eligible for IRCTC train travel insurance?  

It may be noted that any passenger who has booked an e-ticket using the IRCTC website or application can opt to buy the (optional) travel insurance worth just 68 paise. This practice is followed by Indian airlines as well, but the insurance amount is much higher at about Rs 240. Worth mentioning that there is no insurance applicable for children below the age of 5.  

Another point that customers need to remember is the fact that travel insurance is only applicable to Indians and no foreigners are eligible under the insurance scheme.  

Here’s how to claim IRCTC train travel insurance after travel  

In the event of an accident or any other untoward incident, passengers can file a claim with the IRCTC. As of now, IRCTC has tied up with three insurance companies, Royal Sundaram General Insurance Company, Shriram General Insurance Company and ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company, to extend compensation.

When opting to buy the insurance from IRCTC, always remember that you are buying an insurance from the three aforementioned firms. Therefore, you must file an insurance claim with one of the three companies.  

After you buy a rail ticket along with the insurance, the insurer companies will send you an email with the policy documents.

Indian Railways offers insurance at less than 50 paise per train passenger. How it works

What can you buy for 50 paise? Well, financial products such as travel insurance. Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) offers you an insurance cover of up to ₹ 10 lakh at a near-zero premium of 49 paise. Passengers have an option of opting the 'Travel Insurance' while booking train tickets through IRCTC website . If you exercise the option while booking your train, the travel insurance will be applicable for all passengers booked under one PNR (Passenger Name Record).

Eligibility for IRCTC travel insurance

Only the Indian citizens booking tickets through the IRCTC website or mobile app will be eligible to buy the insurance cover. The policy covers death, permanent total disability, permanent partial disability and hospitalization expenses for injury and transportation of mortal remains following rail accident or untoward incident, according to the IRCTC website.

The maximum cover is up to ₹ 10 lakh, in which you get a cover of ₹ 10 lakh for death or permanent total disability due to rail accident or any untoward incident. A coverage of ₹ 7.5 lakh is available in for permanent partial disability. The ₹ 2 lakh coverage for hospitalization expenses for injury is over and above the death or disability coverage. ₹ 10,000 for the transportation of mortal remains.

Step-by-step procedure to get IRCTC travel insurance

A passenger needs to click on the 'Travel insurance' section while booking the ticket. Then, he/she will receive the policy information through a SMS and on their registered email IDs directly from insurance companies. A link will be provided to file the nomination details.

After booking the ticket, the passenger has to fill the nomination details at respective insurance company site. There are three insurance companies which provide rail insurances for ticket bookings via IRCTC website or app — Bharti Axa General Insurance, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance and Shriram General Insurance.

Once the premium is paid by the passengers no cancellations is allowed, said IRCTC. There won't be any refund of the premium in all cases including wait-listed ticket.

If nomination details is not filled then the settlement shall be made with legal heirs, if the claim arises, IRCTC mentioned in the release. IRCTC travel insurance will not be provided for the children below 5 years of age. IRCTC has kept travel insurance scheme uniform for all classes.

Indian Railways Offer Travel Insurance Options Upto ₹10 Lakh, Here’s How To Avail It

In India, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) offers optional travel insurance to passengers booking tickets through their online portal. This insurance coverage is available at a nominal premium and can be selected while booking the train ticket.  This railway travel insurance is given to passengers at  ₹0.35 paise while booking tickets. Through this facility, IRCTC provides insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakhs to its passengers. But, how does this work?

How Does IRCTC Travel Insurance Works?

The horrific railway accident in the Balasore district of Odisha has shocked everyone.  So, it’s best to opt for travel insurance when you do your tickets.

Travellers have the option to purchase travel insurance when purchasing train tickets on the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website or mobile app. Passengers may protect themselves against a variety of travel-related hazards with the help of this extra feature, including trip cancellations, delays, and unexpected medical needs while travelling.

This insurance protects against a variety of terrible occurrences, such as railway accidents that result in the passenger’s death or permanent disability, as well as cases of theft, looting, and other potential risks. It offers coverage up to Rs 10 lakhs. Your whole journey from the starting point to the destination will be protected if you choose this travel insurance, and this complete coverage costs 35 paise.

An insurance payout of up to ₹10 lakh is made in the event that a passenger dies in a railway accident or sustains permanent disability. The passenger receives compensation in the amount of ₹7.5 lakh if they suffer a partial disability. Passengers receive up to ₹10,000 in compensation for minor injuries, and ₹2 lakh in help for major injuries.

How To Claim This Insurance?

Within four months of being involved in a railway accident, Indian Railways passengers may file an insurance claim. By visiting the insurance company’s office, passengers can submit an insurance claim. The nominee’s name must be included when choosing insurance for a passenger. If such is the case, claiming it in the event of an unfortunate event won’t be an issue.

Here is the step-by-step procedure to get IRCTC travel insurance:

• When purchasing a ticket, the customer must select the “Travel insurance” option. Then, the insurance firms will send him or her an SMS and send the policy details to their registered email addresses. To submit the nomination information, click on the linked link.
• The traveller must fill out the nomination information on the website of the appropriate insurance company after purchasing their ticket.
