I love this salon!  A special shout out to my favorite stylist, Bernadette! With her expert knowledge and recommendations, she spent a lot of time with me and fixed a very bad, unblended haircut I previously had, and It's never looked better!!!  Her experience with my hard to color blonde hair was spot on. I just relocated to Murfreesboro and needed a new salon. I have very long hair and usually just do layers, face framing, and thinning. Called on a Wednesday and they were able to fit me in for Saturday morning! I had Emma and she nailed exactly what I wanted. Highly recommend the studio!

I just moved here from Texas where I loved my hairdresser and how she cut my white pixie.  (It took a while for me to find her).  Finding a good stylist in a new area is usually tricky.  To my surprise, Lytle did a wonderful job at my first appointment yesterday!  Huzzah - for those Catherine the Great show fans.

Worst haircut ever

I had an appointment with Johnny. I asked for an inch off the length all around, and a bit of lifting/ lightening on the top to avoid triangle hair. I walked out with a practically boy-short cut! It was three inches shorter at the very bottom, even shorter all around my head, and the ears were practically "cut out," if that makes sense. I used to have nearly shoulder-length hair. What happened? No idea. At one point, when she said she was nearly done, it was VERY asymmetrical. When I pointed it out, she said that's just how my curls were. Eventually she came around and evened it out, but that just meant more snip-snipping on one side, followed by more snipping on the other as she tried to get it somewhat symmetrical. Awful. This is my first DEVA cut and I'm highly suspicious of the technique. Maybe Diana is good, but at double what I've ever paid for a cut, I'm kind-of heartbroken.

I booked my first appointment with the salon and requested Diana since all of the rave reviews were for Diana. When I arrived, I was told Johnny would be doing my hair. I walked out with cotton ball hair! I was told "that's just your hair's texture". They did nothing to remedy the mess they made. Another salon who clearly doesn't know how to work with thick, curly hair. If your hair is wavy, i would try this salon. The woman before me walked out with impeccable, wavy hair.

Why (and how) does hair turn gray?

Although there is no definitive answer as to why one’s hair turns gray, “the biggest culprit is typically with age,” says Chris Testerman, hairstylist and founder of Revive Beauty Bar in Winter Garden, Florida.

“However, some people gray at different stages – it pretty much all boils down to genetics and DNA ,” says Testerman. In addition to age and DNA, he adds that one may notice gray hair as a physical manifestation and a result of stress.

Now that you know the common reasons why hair may turn gray, knowing the process by which it turns gray is important to figure out which products are best suited to treat and/or blend it. To put it simply, “hair turns gray when it loses pigment in the follicle over time creating a white or silver strand,” says Tina Malhotra, New York City-based hairstylist and owner of Hair By Tina M.

How can you blend gray hair?

Many types of products can be used to blend gray hair. That said, everyone’s scalp and hair are different and therefore the products used will be, too.

However, some of the most common products used for blending gray hair are touch up sprays, color-depositing shampoos and conditioners, hair concealers and powders. 

These products that help blend gray hair can be a good option if you’re only looking for a one-time fix for a special event or are looking for a product to hold your hair over between salon appointments. However, if you’re looking to permanently cover your gray hair, that can only be done using permanent hair color.

Although you can dye your hair at home , we’d recommend visiting a salon to consult with a professional hairstylist or hair colorist as they are trained in treating different kinds of hair and can help you decide which option is best for you.

Product ingredients to look for (and stay away from)

When shopping for a hair care product to blend gray hair, April Story, multicultural hairstylist at Fekkai Salon in New York City, explains that there are several key ingredients you’re going to want to look for. They include keratin, panthenol (provitamin B5), hydrolyzed collagen, amino acids, natural oils (argan oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil) and plant extracts (rosemary and chamomile). 

When it comes to ingredients to steer clear of, ammonia, sulfates and parabens should raise red flags when looking at a product’s ingredients list, as they can cause dryness and damage over time.

A millennial manager went viral after posting an amused reaction to her Gen Z assistant attending a work meeting while at a hair salon. 

Brisbane-based Lucindy Bayly, the founder and director of Bayly PR, posted a TikTok video recently showing herself on a video call with her Gen Z assistant, Lulu Davidson. The text on the video said: "When you call your Gen Z assistant on her "WFH" day and she answers like this…"

Davidson appeared to be having her hair washed at a hair salon as she chatted away with Bayly and the song "Just a Girl" by No Doubt played in the background of the video. 

Bayly captioned the video: "This isn't exactly what I meant by 'flexible working arrangements' available but go off queen."

The unusual dynamics shown between manager and employee have proved popular with the younger generation, and the video has now racked up two million views and over 1,000 comments.

I visited Head Trips and I am sooooooo happy with the results. I came in for loc maintenance and when I left I was worshiping at the altar of Akiya!!! Akiya is a true professional and you can tell she has passion for her chosen profession. We talked about what I wanted to achieve from my visit and she used her skills and creativity and made it happen!!! My locs are beautiful, light, airy, with just the right amount of sheen. Akiya gave me style that is super great. I am happy I met her and can hardly wait to see what style we're going to try next.

Friendly atmosphere, great music and commaraderie. Stylist Lorie runs on time and is very expeditious. Professional atmosphere. Great location with ample parking. In and out, just how I like it. Great compliments on my hair style.

I will never go back! I wanted a natural hair cut and Head Trips was recommended. If the only thing they do in this shop are locs then they ought to say so and either refer a person to someone else and just say NO! The cut done by Cheryl was not bad, mind you. But it is not what I wanted and I consider myself to be very clear on giving direction. It's workable but the unprofessional atmosphere was enough to make me feel embarrassed for them. First of all the shop is DIRTY! When I say dirty I mean dirty. They have been in that location for 7 years and there is 7 years of grime in every corner and on every counter. WE have to do better, my people. Secondly, in celebration of their 7th anniversary liquor was being passed around (I was even asked if I wanted a shot!----Lawd-a-mercy, these people don't know me.). Believe me, what people do is their business but it seems to me that the right thing to do would have been to close the shop for the rest of the day and party on out of the sight of a new customer. C'mon y'all....this was so wrong on so many levels. I make a promise to my community that I will continue to support black businesses and I want to see us grow and be empowered economically. This, however, is much too much. You may be the best of the best at what you do but if you can't take pride in your business, why should I? Good luck to Head Trips and God bless.

I am sorry but they don't know what they are doing! I had worst experience. there is a helper who washes hair and I don't think she was ever thought how to wash hair, she wore kitchen gloves, by the time she was done, my scalp was dry and my hair was still tangled. Lori, the hair dresser didn't bother to untangle gently my curls, instead she took fine tooth comb and destroyed my hair, she didn't seem to know anything about curls I lost so much hair. My hair was so greasy that I washed when I got home. I was growing my natural curls for 3 years, now I have to start all over.
