Barbie is opening the doors to her Dreamhouse.

Ahead of Greta Gerwig ‘s highly anticipated and star-studded “Barbie” film, out this July, the entertainment company Kilburn Live and Mattel have teamed up in creating an immersive experience called “World of Barbie” that initially kicked off in Toronto and will now tour across North America through the summer. The experience opens in Los Angeles’s Santa Monica Place on Apr. 14. Tickets are available on the Fever website for $34.50.

Popular on Variety

Of course, the highlight of the experience is Barbie’s Dreamhouse, where guests will be able to explore the exquisitely designed rooms of the life-size Malibu mansion complete with a patio and pool, and walk-in closets filled with garments from decades of iconic Barbie fashion history.

The Los Angeles run will also feature special events and after-hour celebrations. Starting in late May, 21+ guests will be invited to Sips after Sunset, a recurring event with DJ-driven music and specialty cocktails, while June will see the opening of Pink Carpet Night, where guests will be encouraged to wear their most glamorous, “Barbiecore” attire for a night of live music, dancing and drinks.

Warner Bros. released the official trailer for Gerwig’s “Barbie” film last month. While plot details have been kept tightly under wraps, the film does find Barbie and Ken stuck in the real world, where the former discovers the challenges of being a live woman. Robbie stars opposite Ryan Gosling, who plays Barbie’s longtime boy toy Ken.

Along with Robbie and Gosling, the star-studded cast includes Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Fennell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ncuti Gatwa and Issa Rae, among many others.

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ have generated immense interest and both movies are set to grace the big screen within a mere day of each other. Greta Gerwig earned Academy Award nominations in 2018 for Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay for her film ‘Lady Bird’. She also directed the captivating adaptation of ‘Little Women’, featuring the talents of Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan.

Now, turning our attention to the star-studded cast of Barbie, it boasts an enviable ensemble. As well as A-listers Robbie and Gosling, there are also roles for Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Helen Mirren, Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon and Nicola Coughlan, adding to the film’s allure even for those of more advanced years.

Why has Barbie been banned in Vietnam?

You may have heard that the new movie has been banned in Vietnam, and wondering why a kids-focused adventure could have caused this reaction. Well, the answer lies in the detail of a map.

In one of the scenes a very child-like map is shown which includes the South China Sea and what is known as the “nine dash line” which is disputed in Vietnam. The following news clip explains more.

What’s the Barbie music playlist?

And as if the cast and direction weren’t enticing enough, the film’s soundtrack is set to be a standout feature in its own right. Boasting an eclectic mix of musical talents, including Dua Lipa, Karol G, Lizzo, Fifty Fifty, and even Gosling himself, the film’s soundtrack is destined to captivate audiences and is worthy of gracing any esteemed festival. Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal Celebrated The Book Launch For Barbie: The World Tour

By Jamila Stewart

Image may contain Hailey Baldwin Margot Robbie Clothing Coat Jacket Blazer People Person Footwear Shoe and Lamp

No other movie press tour became a phenomenon in the way that Barbie did. There’s a plethora of factors to credit—the immense star power of the film’s lead-producer hybrid, the subject matter's multi-generational appeal, and the world’s most iconic doll come to life. And then there was Margot Robbie's many designer recreations of actual archival Barbie looks for the tour's red carpet. The concept? Brilliantly executed by stylist Andrew Mukamal and the eager and collaborative help of over 13 designers.

Throughout Barbie's global tour, Robbie turned up to red carpet after red carpet in a shade of pink or a clever nod to a vintage Barbie ensemble. And as a final send-off (just before Oscar Sunday), Robbie turned out once again in her Barbie-best to fete the launch of the coffee table book, Barbie: The World Tour (Rizzoli),

Thursday night, Robbie and Mukamal drew out a star-studded crowd to a store-meets-art-gallery exhibition stationed at Just One Eye dedicated to all things Barbie. A massive metal sculpture was the first focal point, dead center at the front of the store, but mostly immediately after, there was what everyone had come for—a spread of multiple copies of Barbie: The World Tour. Guests had the privilege of privately previewing (it isn’t expected to be released until March 19).

On the opposite corner of the room were 10 mannequins dressed like Margot Robbie as Barbie—actual pieces from the press tour that were hauled in for the evening to be viewed IRL. There was the 1959 Barbie-channeling black and white striped Herve Leger mini dress Robbie wore in Australia in June, the Vivienne Westwood gown the actor donned at the London film premiere, a sparkling black mermaid gown by Schiaparelli that appeared at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, and an Atelier Versace gown fans in Seoul may remember.

As far as book launches go, this was one people felt palpably excited about—and there is, of course, a huge energy in the room when not only Robbie but Mattel, the engine of a corporation behind the toy enterprise, are in the room. “I think about the impact on just people. The emotion, the love, the happiness,” Josh Silverman, executive vice president and chief franchise officer of Mattel tells Vogue. "The film was able to bring people together to share experiences, which I think is really important.”

Its impact also generated the company over $150 million. “A lot of this is about alchemy,” he said, “and the magic that became.” Rizzoli, the publishing company behind the anticipated documentation of the press tour’s wardrobe process, was also present. “It was such an unusual project to have all these creative people, all these fashion designers, all working toward one idea,” Charles Miers, Vice President at Rizzoli, told Vogue. “So it was very obviously fashion history in the making.”

For the span of the three-hour-long event, there likely wasn’t a nano-second Robbie wasn’t surrounded by people eager to congratulate the actor and producer. The next busiest person in the room was, of course, Mukamal. While many Barbie press tour looks dominated the news, a few never publicly came to be due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

“That pushed us to realize that there's this treasure trove of looks that the world has never seen, and honestly, they may never have seen had it not been for this.” Of them all, seen and unseen, you, of course, can’t quite ask him to pick a favorite. “It’s so hard to choose. The ones we did on tour have this spark of memory where I look at it and I’m immediately back in that city, in that day, with Margot,” Mukamal says. “These are memories I know I’ll look back on so fondly. But also, the looks that nobody got to see are so exciting and special to me also, because now they exist only in this form.”

With everyone in their best cocktail attire, Robbie in a ‘60s-esque mini number derived from the Spring 2024 Versace collection by Donatella (who, despite hosting her own party elsewhere, made an appearance), the room was abuzz.

Jeremy Scott, who supported a number of the tour’s looks, ogled the glass case of Barbie dolls dressed in vintage doll wear later reimagined on screen and on the carpet (it sat next to a wall of shoes Robbie donned along the way); Hailey Bieber made a late arrival, but made a beeline for the table of Barbie: A World Tour books (Mukamal walked her through the pages himself); and Zoë Kravitz (a longtime client of Mukamal’s) and Channing Tatum chatted with friends in the middle of the room. It was, in all aspects, just the kind of cocktail party you’d expect for the occasion—bedazzled pink bottles of Don Julio tequila and all.

A new book charts all the colourful looks worn by Margot Robbie on the Barbie press tour

In one of the most literal and dedicated forms of ' Method Dressing ' we've ever seen, Robbie's red-carpet looks throughout Barbie 's promotion – from pink Valentino polka-dots to playful gingham Prada ensembles – were inspired by outfits worn by the doll herself, expertly re-created by top designers with the help of Robbie's stylist, Andrew Mukamal. Now, a new book, Barbie: The World Tour , pays homage to this epic feat of life imitating art, with photographs by Craig McDean charting all of Robbie's Barbie-coded outfits.

Accompanying McDean's sumptuous photography are images of original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel's Barbie fashion archives, and the designers' sketches and Polaroids from fittings. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks, the book is a unique look behind the curtain at one of the most iconic tourdrobes in recent memory.

"The work that Andrew did in bringing all these elements together – the history of Barbie, the research he did through the Mattel archives, bringing in designers who had a childhood connection with Barbie or found inspiration in her for their later careers, or even just sensing what the world in general was getting excited about and trying to create moments for them – it was amazing, and it felt like that should all be celebrated," writes Robbie.

Here, we delve into our favourite photographs from the book. 'Barbie: The World Tour' by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal (Rizzoli New York, 2024) is out now.

"It wasn’t just looking into the history of Barbie and the history of Mattel but also going into the knowledge that I had already accumulated just through work and interest in these different fashion houses and understanding their signatures, their codes, the things they’re most famous for," writes Mukamal in the book, of finding the designers – and the outfits – for Robbie.

Margot Robbie as 'Day to Night' Barbie in Versace

Robbie wore this look, designed by Donatella Versace, to the Barbie premiere in Seoul. Featuring a pink and white skirt suit with a matching boater hat, pointed pumps, a mini bag and a glittery pink phone, it's one of the most famous from the whole tour.

Sketches by Donatella Versace

"My first memory of Barbie was seeing her iconic blonde hair and understanding she was a powerful woman who could be anything. A total inspiration!" wrote Donatella Versace on one of her inspiration sketches for Robbie's 'Day to Night' Barbie outfit. Also pictured is a sketch of the second look Robbie wore to the Seoul premiere, which featured a shimmering bodice and tulle skirt – also based on one of the doll's original designs.

A sketch by Andreas Kronthaler

text, letter

"Without Barbie, I would not be a fashion designer," reads a note by designer Andreas Kronthaler, affixed to a sketch for the Vivienne Westwood dress Robbie wore to the European Barbie premiere, held in London. On the night, Robbie wore a couture gown modelled on the 'Enchanted Evening' doll from 1990, which was made from blush satin and embroidered white tulle, which she accessorised with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker and a rose brooch.

Margot Robbie in Chanel

The Barbie tour was actually cut short due to the SAG-AFTRA strike , meaning not every look made it onto the red carpet. All were photographed, however – meaning this is one of the first looks at Robbie in a Barbie-inspired Chanel jacket and skirt.

Margot Robbie as 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie in Bottega Veneta

Mukamal's inspiration for this look was the 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie from 2015, and featured turn-up jeans by Bottega Veneta, a red belt and a tie-up floral shirt, along with Manolo Blahnik mules. "For an early morning talk show, we loved the idea of wearing Matthieu Blazy’s version of 'Cherry Pie Picnic' for Bottega Veneta: something surprising, our only denim look of the tour and a step away from pink," writes Mukamal in the book.

Margot Robbie Shimmers in a Perfectly Pink Minidress at Barbie: The World Tour Book Party

The actress and her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, appeared at the event to celebrate the release of their new book

Gonzalo Marroquin/Patrick McMullan via Getty

Margot Barbie is back!

While appearing at an event in celebration of the launch of her book Barbie: The World Tour with her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, Margot Robbie wore yet another perfectly pink outfit.

The actress, 33, wore a pink and silver chainmail Versace minidress with matching heels and carried a clear Versace handbag. It bore a striking resemblance to another pink Versace minidress she wore last June (that was previously worn by Claudia Schiffer ). And this argyle-print chainmail dress is also a favorite of Schiffer's! She's worn the floor-length version in the yellow and green colorways !

Donatella Versace herself was also in attendance at the book party, as was the film's director Greta Gerwig , along with Zoë Kravitz , Channing Tatum , Hailey Bieber and more.

The new book, which officially releases March 19, takes a look through Robbie's outfits from the Barbie press tour last year, all styled by Mukamal. While traveling the world to promote the film, the actress wore countless outfits that were either recreations of Barbie doll outfits or outfits that looked like they were plucked right out of Barbieland.

Mukamal and Robbie took all of the looks and put them together in this book.

"This book was an idea I had in my living room when I started dreaming about Margot’s wardrobe for the 'Barbie' press tour in March 2023. I could have never imagined just a few months later we’d be in the studio shooting this project with the team of our dreams," he wrote on Instagram in January when announcing the book.

One of Robbie's most iconic Barbie looks from the press tour includes Enchanted Evening Barbie from the 1960s at the London premiere in a Vivienne Westwood dress.

Robbie wore a blush pink satin draped corset dress with a matching side train, accented by a rose motif brooch inside the flower-shaped orb. Her look also featured a white tulle stole and matte ivory opera gloves.

Wearing a chic updo with face-framing bangs, Robbie styled the vintage look with a pair of silver peep-toe jeweled Christian Louboutin heels and a multilayered Assael pearl necklace and earrings.

She channeled another Barbie from the '60s for the film's world premiere last summer as well. This time it was Solo in the Spotlight Barbie , and Robbie wore custom Schiaparelli.

Her bustier dress, designed by creative director Daniel Roseberry, boasted sequin embroidery and a multi-layered tulle hem. A red hand-painted embroidered rose decorated the hem, matching Robbie’s red lipstick and toenails.

While speaking with PEOPLE on the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere, she said that these Barbie-inspired looks have been incredible to recreate .

“We're finding Barbie references from decades past and just doing it really for the big Barbie fans out there, people who are actually collecting those Barbies. We're hoping to get them excited,” she said. “We're pairing Barbie references with great designers.”

She also had her own take on the doll’s over-the-top glam: “Well, it's not subtle, but it's very fun!”

How Barbie Mirrored Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, According To A Movie Theater Executive

Neither Barbie nor Taylor had a Cruel Summer.

The summer of 2023 will likely be remembered as the season where audience members came back to the movies. It actually began when The Super Mario Bros . Movie took off at the box office, becoming the first movie this year to cross the $1 billion mark . That movie soon would be joined by Greta Gerwig ’s Barbie , which stars Margot Robbie as the titular hero and continues to dominate at the box office, setting all sorts of miraculous records for Warner Bros. While reflecting on the push of moviegoers returning to multiplexes in droves, NATO Executive Vice President and General Counsel Jackie Brenneman compared the sensation around Barbie to another powerhouse blonde who took America by storm this summer… Taylor Swift .

Jackie Brenneman appeared on CinemaBlend’s official podcast ReelBlend to promote the upcoming National Cinema Day, which is scheduled for Sunday, August 27th. On that day, discounted admissions for all movies at participating U.S. theaters in all formats (including Premium Large Format screens) will be no more than $4. This means you can catch Barbie , Oppenheimer , Blue Beetle or the new release of Gran Turismo , in 4DX and IMAX, all for $4 a ticket. It will be a remarkable celebration of the moviegoing experience. And it reminded Brenneman of the community sensation that rallied around every stop on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour this past summer . As Brenneman explained:

A lot of people that came to Barbie hadn't been (to the movies) in a while. I think that's wonderful. But when you combine Barbie and Oppenheimer, what it also demonstrates in a really strong way for the first time in modern moviegoing (history) is the impact of creating a community online and then having that community online translate in real life. We all want to feel like we're part of something. We want to feel like we're in a community, and everyone knew what the homework was. They knew the assignment. They knew they were supposed to come in pink. They knew you were supposed to pose in the Barbie box. And we saw this with Taylor Swift, right? I did not go to a Taylor Swift concert. … But I know that if you go to a Taylor Swift concert, you wear friendship bracelets. That's what you do. And I think people are really figuring out how to show that they're part of the story online and then in real life. And I think we have a lot to learn from that.

I can tell you this is true from experience, and I’m certain so many people reading this far can attest to it, as well. When we saw Barbie over opening weekend, I watched people exit the theater, all wearing pink, and waited in line to take their picture in a life-sized Barbie box, likely to share on social and report to their followers that they’d seen the movie. Like Jackie Brenneman says, they wanted to show that they had been part of a community.

Margot Robbie's Barbie smiling on beach

And moviegoers will have the opportunity to feel like they are part of the community again by participating in National Cinema Day, a celebration that was created last year , but this year will occur on a weekend and will feature a 200 percent increase in available upcoming 2023 movies . To buy tickets or see a list of participating theaters, visit NationalCinemaDay.org, and your local movie theater’s website or app. And enjoy the savings, which are always appreciated by people looking to go to the movies.

Margot Robbie Dressed Like Barbie Twice in Australia Ahead of Barbie Movie Release

Her latest press tour looks pay homage to the original doll from 1959.

She switched into a second retro-inspired look for more press, wearing a white strawberry print belted Moschino minidress with the same hairstyle and different white-rimmed sunglasses. Robbie appeared enthusiastic while posing:

The throwback fashion looks mark a fun pivot for a press tour that has been full of unexpected but creative homages so far. There’s a lot more to come, too: Robbie and Ryan Gosling announced earlier that the Barbie press tour will happen in eight cities: Sydney (where Robbie is now), Toronto (where Gosling is now), Seoul, Mexico City, Los Angeles (where they did their initial photo call ), London, Berlin, and New York.

ryan gosling and simu liu doing barbie press

Robbie recently spoke to Fandango about how the film crew managed to get the now-viral trailer shot of her arched Barbie feet.

“It was probably about eight takes. Wasn’t that many,” she said. “I walked up, we had little sticky bits on the floor, double-sided tape for the shoes, so they wouldn’t come off, so I could get my feet out of them. And I was holding onto a bar. But that’s it. I wasn’t in a harness or anything like that. I just walked up, kind of held onto the bar above [the] camera.” She stressed that using her own body for shots like that is important to her: “I always try to do my own inserts.”

This is what Billie Eilish talks about when she’s not promoting ‘Barbie, Barbie, Barbie’

Billie Eilish is so sick of talking about her Oscar-winning “Barbie” song.

The singer, who co-wrote “What Was I Made For?” with brother-collaborator Finneas for Greta Gerwig’s movie, finally has time to talk about how tiring it was to promote the song and attend all those awards ceremonies.

“Bro, nobody can get enough of me,” she told Rolling Stone . “Every second of every day is Barbie, Barbie, Barbie, Barbie, Barbie, which is great, but as soon as the Oscars are over and I lose, I’m going the f— away. I’m literally gone.”

She did not, in fact, lose the Academy Award for original song, and she and Finneas became the youngest two-time winners in Oscars history . The duo also picked up a Golden Globe and a Grammy for the hit .

Billie Eilish slams Variety for ‘outing’ her sexuality at red carpet: ‘Leave me alone’

Billie Eilish called out Variety in an Instagram post for ‘outing me on a red carpet... instead of talking about anything else’ at its Hitmakers Brunch.

Dec. 4, 2023

Eilish told the magazine — in what she said was her first non-”Barbie” interview in more than a year — that the song became a bigger hit than she was anticipating.

The 22-year-old hitmaker is set to release her third album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” on May 17. Though she is exploring different sounds and more mature themes than in her previous work, she and Finneas, who was also interviewed for the profile, revealed that the opening track mirrors “What Was I Made For?”

She and Finneas had writer’s block when they were creating the “Barbie” track, and they ended up writing this new song first, she said.

The tune, with its yet-to-be-revealed title, became the catalyst for the emotional and delicate “Barbie” hit, sharing its whispered sound and a similarly graceful melody. It explores the myth that losing weight means gaining happiness — another emotional theme that, like the one in “What Was I Made For?,” often plagues girls and women as they grow up.

Billie Eilish on her summer blockbuster ‘anti-single’: ‘The song was an excuse to say the truth’

Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?’, co-written with her brother Finneas O’Connell, has transcended the smash-hit film it arrived with.

Oct. 11, 2023

Eilish, 22, said she felt like she had been making music and working nonstop since she hit the A-list as a teenager.

“I had this moment of like, ‘Oh, my God, I haven’t had fun in seven years.’ Truly. I had this illusion that I had, because who experiences going to the Grammys at basically 17 and winning five ?” she said. “But in life, I realized I had really not experienced that much. I didn’t go outside for five years. How was I supposed to have any experiences?”

Since 2019, the singer has put out two albums, written and performed songs for “No Time to Die” and “Barbie” (winning Oscars for both), headlined at Coachella and picked up more than a few Grammys. After the lengthy and very pink “Barbie” promotional tour, she said she was relieved to catch a break.

That is, until her next album kicks off a whole new cycle.

Broadway Spring 2024: ‘The Heart Of Rock And Roll’ & All Of Deadline’s Reviews

The project marks the first stage venture for LuckyChap, whose other film and TV credits include Promising Young Woman, I, Tonya and the Hulu TV series Dollface .

The Big Gay Jamboree , according to the synopsis, “centers on Stacey, who after blacking out from 18 Jägerbombs, wakes up hungover in the most terrifying place of all: an Off-Broadway musical. With no memory of how she got there, Stacey is forced to put her BFA in theater to use, belt her face off, and figure out how the hell she’s gonna escape this 1940s golden age musical…while a live audience watches.”

In a joint statement, LuckyChap said, “We’ve been admiring Marla Mindelle’s work for quite some time and our adoration only grew when we were blown away by Titaníque . We knew that we wanted to be a part of bringing Marla’s The Big Gay Jamboree to the stage. We’ve been wanting to find a way into the theatre space and couldn’t be more thrilled for this to be our first foray alongside the incredible team involved.”

Said Wagner and Johnson, “Few things have given us greater hope in the future of the American theater than the recent renaissance we’ve seen happen downtown. We’re excited to bring Marla back to Off-Broadway audiences, and welcome LuckyChap into the theatrical fray.”

Full casting is to be announced at a later date.

Titaníque , a jukebox musical parody of the 1997 film Titanic , features the songs of Céline Dion and includes a Céline Dion character who hijacks a tour at a Titanic museum and provides her take on what really happened to Jack and Rose that fateful night. The show premiered in Los Angeles in 2017, then began an Off Broadway run at the Asylum Theatre in 2022 (later transferring to the Daryl Roth Theatre, where it continues to play). Titaníque won the Off Broadway Lucille Lortel Awards for outstanding musical, lead performer (Mindelle) and costume design (Alejo Vietti).

Why Kristi Yamaguchi Says Basketball Player Caitlin Clark Gives Her Hope: "Really Exciting"

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Heritage Month, the figure skating legend is being honored with her very own doll from The Inspiring Women Series.

barbie and tour

Kristi Yamaguchi is ready to see a new generation of athletes break barriers at the   2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France this July.

The figure skating champion spoke to NBC Insider about the anticipation surrounding the upcoming games as she reflected on her favorite memories and why the sporting event remains important to her. In short, it's all about paving the way for other women and people of diverse backgrounds.

“I think the Olympics and what it stands for — obviously fair play and coming together and peace and it’s not just about winning, it’s about people showing up and being their best that they can absolutely be," Yamaguchi said. "At the core of that, the athletes understand that, and that’s what, as they're training day in and day out, day in day out, that’s what’s top of mind for them in going after that dream."

Kristi Yamaguchi says athletes like Caitlin Clark give her hope for the future of women's sports

At the heart of the Olympics’ founding belief of uniting athletes from all backgrounds is diversity and, as someone who was subjected to and endured substantial racial bias throughout her career, even in the realms of sponsorships and endorsements, Kristi Yamaguchi reveals why elevating diversity standards is crucial to future Games and the concept of equality between men’s and women’s sports.

“[Diversity is] what our country is made up of,” started Yamaguchi. “I think it’s just showing… That no matter who you are or what your background is, you can achieve greatness like this. You can dream it. You can go after it.”

The addition of diversity within sports and the ascension of women sports in the current landscape is a trend that has Yamaguchi genuinely excited. And she believes that right now is a "really exciting time in women's sports," with athletes like Caitlin Clark  — who might compete in the Games — making headlines in the news.

Caitlin Clark during the 2024 final four

“I heard the women’s Final Four had higher viewership than the men’s, and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness! We’re getting there,'" she reflected. “That’s only going to happen when there are incredible spotlights shined on athletes like Caitlin and others, who are breaking barriers and boundaries, and showing what’s possible out there."

But how does figure skating stack up, in terms of diversity? "I think figure skating in whole, especially within the United States, is trying to encourage and support diversity within its sport and make sure it becomes more accessible to everyone out there,” states Yamaguchi. “I think there’s still a lot of work to be done [within diversity], but at least it’s at top of mind for people.”

Did Kristi Yamaguchi win an Olympic medal?

In 1992, at just 20 years old, the native of Fremont, California jettisoned herself into the limelight after capturing the gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. Considering the generational caliber of talent she was up against, this was no small feat. Sandwiched between heavyweights Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan in a stacked super team — similar to what a Team USA women’s gymnastics artistic squad of Simone Biles , Sunisa “Suni” Lee and Gabby Douglas  could look like this summer — Yamaguchi prevailed, utilizing a routine strategy that showcased her artistry and well-rounded capabilities. In contrast, the elite Harding and Kerrigan opted for the dreaded triple Axel jump, a flashy yet highly difficult spinning maneuver that consists of three and a half rotations. The tactical gambit paid off after Harding and Japan’s Midori Ito, the first woman to land the impressive jump, fell during their routines, propelling Yamaguchi to the top of the podium.

While Yamaguchi hung up her skates long ago, the 1992 gold medalist and four-time World Champion is using her iconic legacy to inspire future waves of female athletes, including Asian American athletes Alysa Liu and Karen Chen, just like Yamaguchi’s childhood idol Dorothy Hamill did for her, more than three decades ago.

Kristi Yamaguchi’s Favorite Olympic Memory

For athletes like Yamaguchi, who dedicated so much time to the craft, there’s one specific memory that stands out from her Olympic career “It’s hard to pick just one, but I think walking in and being announced as the United States Olympic team at the Olympic ceremonies ,” reflects Yamaguchi, who was inducted in the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2005. “I think you ask almost any Olympic athlete, and that’s just when reality really hits you. And it’s so incredibly humbling, and it’s such a proud moment as well.”

It's quite the contrast to the moment of “terror” she felt when stepping onto the ice during the pinnacle of the 1992 Albertville Winter Games.

“Really, yeah,” she jokes. “I think there are for sure moments where it’s just like, ‘Ugh, I don’t think I can do this. I think I’m just going to fall apart out there.’ I had to snap myself out of it, and be like, ‘Okay, you put the hours in; you put the work in.’ And I think it was trying to get that positive mind talk in there to say, ‘You’re ready, you’ve trained, you’ve done this back-to-back routine and training clean, this is no different.’”

“It’s almost trying to turn your mind off and your emotions off, and let your body just go on automatic pilot," she continued.

Kristi Yamaguchi holds up her Barbie

What does Yamaguchi do now?

Though she’s the first Asian American woman to ever win an Olympic gold medal, Kristi Yamaguchi is also a bona fide trailblazer off the ice, publishing five books, including Dream Big, Little Pig!, which appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list. To promote child literacy, Yamaguchi, who recognized “access is one of the biggest challenges, especially for low-income families,” created the Always Dream Foundation for children, a charity that gives kids the “tools to create that foundation of the love of reading,” she told TODAY in 2018. As a youth mentor and role model for children around the globe, she’s a source of inspiration to which there is no end and, in honor of her lasting impact, especially with Asian American athletes, Mattel honored her with her own doll from The Inspiring Women™ Series.

“It resonated when they [Mattel] said, ‘Oh, [it’s] for our AAPI month, and of course I’m like, ‘Oh, okay, this has a good ring to it,’” Yamaguchi said.

RELATED: Revisiting the Legendary 1992 Dream Team and Their Gold-Medal Win at the Barcelona Olympics

“And then, to be a part of the Inspiring Women’s Series. It’s not just about me winning the gold medal and the achievements at the Olympics, but [also] the story of getting there and then also representing the Asian American communities and hopefully being able to inspire other generations of young athletes, young dreamers out there – whatever it may be – to go after their passions and build resiliency, build determination to do that,” she continued. “I think the two-fold there is the Olympic achievement but also honoring AAPI month.”

In previous years, the esteemed series has produced dolls to honor a myriad of celebrated heroines, such as Dr. Jane Goodall, Dr. Maya Angelou, Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt, Billie Jean King, Ella Fitzgerald, Florence Nightingale, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, and Rosa Parks, among others.

Though Yamaguchi says being a mentor and role model so early in career was “daunting” at times, as challenging as it was — even attempting to coach up her own daughter Emma in figure skating — the reward of mentorship has always been well worth it.

“At 20, I wasn’t sure what that meant or what I had to do or how to be, and I think as I got older and realized, just try to be yourself,” noted Yamaguchi. “Not everyone is going to like you, or not everyone is going to like everything you do, but some people might, and that’s great.” She continued, “If you just try to be as positive as you can, and do what’s in your heart, then I think that comes across, and hopefully, that inspires people. …Find your own path; find what it is that is your passion.”

The Kristi Yamaguchi Barbie doll wears a black leotard with shimmering gold accents, inspired by the figure skater’s costume from the 1992 Olympic Games when she won the gold medal. The doll’s accessories are accurate to Yamaguchi's legendary ice-skating Olympian performance, with a gold ribbon in her hair, silvery earrings, a celebratory bouquet and white skates to complete her look.
