ECO-FRIENDLY STORES IN DUBAI

World-class dining, extravagant shopping and record-breaking architecture are just some of the things that come to mind when we talk about tourism in Dubai. The emirate; however, with its increasing emphasis on going green also offers much in the way of eco-friendly tourism. If you are seeking sustainable ways of enjoying a vacation, you have come to the right place. Here is all you need to know about ecotourism in Dubai.

ECOTOURISM IN DUBAI: VACATIONING RESPONSIBLY

Sustainable ecotourism practices in Dubai allow you to explore the desert landscape and the local flora and fauna without harming the environment. But first, here’s an overview of ecotourism in the emirates.

Ecotourism encourages travellers to be responsible and mindful while visiting natural areas. This is a kind of tourism that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of the local people as well as plants and animals. According to the United Nations, ecotourism contributes to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

The UAE has more than 5,000 sq.km. of protected areas, which is why the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has launched ‘The UAE’s Natural Wonders’ to promote ecotourism in Dubai along with other emirates. The goals of ecotourism under this program include raising awareness about ecotourism places in the UAE and building environmental and cultural understanding among both locals and tourists.

DUBAI ECOTOURISM: TOP LOCATIONS

Here are some of the best places in the emirate that provide eco-friendly leisure.

DUBAI DESERT CONSERVATION RESERVE (DDCR)

The vast expanse of DDCR is one of the largest nature reserves in the UAE. Covering an area of 225 sq. km, DDCR covers almost 5% of the total land of Dubai. The reserve has hundreds of species of plants, birds, mammals and reptiles. Not to mention, you can also engage in activities like trekking, safaris, sandboarding, camel and horse riding and falconry.  You can also head to Sonora Camp for some extravagant desert dining.

Sustainable Travel & Ecotourism in Dubai

The U.A.E. has the world's largest ecological footprint - the Arabian desert, after all, is not a sustainable place to build major cities, and certainly not on the scale that Dubai and Abu Dhabi have embarked on. High temperatures and lack of water long precluded the development of arid landscapes. However, with the advent of air-conditioning, desalination plants, and modern transport, cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi continue to grow into sprawling urban centers. In places like these where summer temperatures often top 100°F (37.8°C), massive amounts of energy must be used to keep the populace cool.

The major projects here - whether it's hotels, malls, golf courses, skyscrapers, roads, man-made islands, entertainment complexes, real estate development, or other infrastructure projects all tax the environment - and until recently there's been little consciousness about their environmental impacts. Profligate water and electricity usage further strains the environment. Dubai is well known for its beach resorts, golf courses, and parks, but keeping that landscape green requires an inordinate amount of water. The U.A.E., in fact, has the world's highest per capita water use.

Sustainable tourism remains a fledgling industry in Dubai, but the local government is beginning to take a closer look at its advantages. The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing launched a "Green Tourism Award" program recently to encourage innovations in eco-tourism (for details, visit www.green.dubaitourism.ae). This initiative includes efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the tourism sector's sprawling developments, and supporting activities that encourage a celebration of the U.A.E.'s natural assets.

Eco-friendly outdoor activities include traditional desert safaris, hiking and camping in the Hajar Mountains, scuba and snorkeling outings on the U.A.E.'s Eastern coast, and bird-watching adventures. With over 400 species in the U.A.E., there are extensive bird-watching opportunities in places as diverse as Mushrif Park, Emirates Golf Club, Jebel Ali, and Hatta (visit www.dubaitourism.ae for more information). You can also enjoy an eco-friendly desert immersion at Al Maha Desert Resort, perched on the slope of a huge dune located within a desert conservation reserve of 233 sq. km (90 sq. miles/5% of the landmass of Dubai). For a more hearty experience, expedition companies will take you out for a trek in the Hajar Mountains, with base camps set up from abandoned Shihhi villages (a tribe of the northern emirate of Ras al-Khaimah and neighboring Oman). For more information, see: www.arabiahorizons.com/Hajar-Mountains-Safari/.

The best scuba and snorkeling sites are found in the emirate of Fujairah, as well as off "Snoopy Island" on the Gulf of Oman, where tropical fish flitter around an extensive coral reef. For the more adventurous who want to explore an array of fascinating shipwrecks located further south on this stretch of the Eastern coast of the U.A.E., there are plenty of opportunities (visit www.scuba-2000.com).

The Desert Islands Abu Dhabi (www.desertislands.com) will form a collection of eight islands off the capital's coast with dynamic wildlife reserves, untouched marine ecologies, and archeological sites - all meant to develop sustainable tourism in the country. Once completed, activities will include nature and wildlife drives and hikes, mountain biking, kayaking, snorkeling, falconry, and archery. Yas Island is one of the first islands in this project to be completed.

The Abu Dhabi government is also positioning the emirate as an innovator in renewable energy technology, launching the first ever World Future Energy Summit in 2009. This event, to be held each January, draws an international crowd and features exhibits on clean energy, with a line-up of impressive speakers that have included Tony Blair. For more information, visit: www.worldfutureenergysummit.com. Abu Dhabi has also won the bid to host IRENA, the world's first multilateral renewable energy agency. For details, see: www.irena.org.

Abu Dhabi's Masdar City project - an ambitious enterprise funded entirely by Masdar, the clean technology investment fund of the Abu Dhabi government -represents the world's first carbon neutral, zero waste city. It features fanciful technological innovations including jazzy people-moving devices and fascinating state-of-the-art cooling technologies meant to keep the city inhabitable without guzzling energy. Masdar City will host the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology - a sister school to MIT that will become a center for innovation in green technology. While behind schedule on construction, parts of the city are open, and it's worth inquiring about a visit if you are in Abu Dhabi. For more information, visit: www.masdarcity.ae/en/index.aspx.

The National Ecotourism project (The UAE’s Natural Wonders)

The National Ecotourism project (The UAE’s Natural Wonders) is a three-phase national project that was launched with an aim to promote ecotourism across the seven emirates and to position the UAE as a leading ecotourism hub. The first phase of the project raises awareness about the UAE’s 43 nature reserves, which make up 14 per cent of the UAE’s territory.

In July 2018, Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launched a three-phase national project titled ‘The UAE’s Natural Wonders’. The project aims to promote ecotourism across the seven emirates and to position the UAE as a leading ecotourism hub.

The first phase of the project raises awareness about the UAE’s 43 nature reserves, which make up 14 per cent of the UAE’s territory. Under the project’s theme, the ministry launched an ecotourism microsite , an app titled  Eco Tourism UAE available on iTunes and Google Play and an eBook . These resources contain information, images and videos which highlight the rich biodiversity across the country's protected areas.

To compile the material, MoCCAE teams travelled across 2,700 km and shot 380 hours of footage on the ground, as well as 350 hours using drones.

The ministry intends to collaborate with travel agencies and airlines to include these sites in their promotional packages for the UAE.

The next  phase of the project will include the UAE's mountains and sea.

Dubai, a city often synonymous with opulence and architectural marvels, is now emerging as a beacon for eco-tourism. Imagine embarking on a journey where every step you take is in harmony with nature. Where your month-long hotel stay doesn't just offer luxury but also ensures the Earth's well-being. This isn't just a dream; it's the reality of eco-tourism in Dubai. No more sifting through Tripadvisor hotels or Expedia hotel rooms ; the concierge does the hard work for you, making your stay both green and grand.

The Evolution of Eco-Tourism in Dubai

Eco-tourism isn't a new concept, but Dubai's approach to it is refreshingly innovative. Historically, the city's tourism was centered around its skyscrapers, shopping festivals, and luxury experiences. However, as the global consciousness shifted towards sustainability, Dubai recognized the need to adapt. The past decade has seen a surge in hotel accommodation options that prioritize the environment. From hotel weekly rentals that use solar energy to extended stay rooms with waste recycling systems, the city's hospitality sector has transformed.

But it's not just about the hotels. Dubai's desert landscapes, once seen as vast expanses of barren land, are now treasured for their unique ecosystems. Good places to stay in the city now often include desert retreats that offer authentic Bedouin experiences without compromising on sustainability. And for those who prefer the urban landscape, there are affordable extended stay hotels near me that are green-certified.

Moreover, the city's commitment to green initiatives goes beyond just accommodations. With the rise of online hotel reservation platforms promoting eco-friendly stays and the government's push for sustainable tourism, Dubai is positioning itself as a global leader in eco-tourism. Dubai as an Ecotourism Destination

Are you looking for an ecotourism experience in Dubai? There are ecotourism activities in Dubai, just not as many as standard touristy things to do. While ecotourism is not a concept top of mind to every traveller visiting Dubai, for some, the idea of sustainable travel is important and often the motivation behind their travel itinerary. Dubai is a hub of glitz and glamour offering endless touristic activities, and now there is another side to tourism in Dubai that is starting to emerge for the responsible traveller. Platinum Heritage is leading the way for Dubai’s ecotourism industry.

What is Ecotourism

The International Ecotourism Society defines Ecotourism as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education.” This is inclusive of both staff and Guests. Interpretation relates to ecotourism promoting a greater understanding and appreciation for the local culture and natural environment.

Ecotourism promotes responsible travel; travellers are attracted to this type of adventure travel as they are able to experience the culture and natural environment of a new place without exploiting it for touristic profits. Usually some of the proceeds generated from this type of travel are pumped directly back into local conservation efforts.

Dubai as an Ecotourism Destination

Principles of Ecotourism

  • Minimise physical, social, behavioural, and psychological impacts of tourism on the local people and natural environment.
  • Build environmental and cultural awareness, respect and understanding.
  • Provide direct financial benefits for conservation efforts and local people.
  • Create memorable and enriching experiences for Guests which helps raise empathetic understanding of a host country’s political, environmental, and social climates.
  • Use of low-impact operations on the environment (low carbon footprint) such as solar panels.

Benefits of Sustainable Travel

Learn about the culture

As the only ecotourism Desert Safari company in the UAE, our sustainability mission is to conserve the local culture, native animals and natural environment. Our Desert Safaris include traditional cultural entertainment and cuisine from Dubai and we employ local Bedouin who share authentic stories and experiences with Guests.

Travel for a cause

All our wildlife drives operate in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. For every profit made, we donate a percentage to conservation efforts in the area. This means that when you experience one of our Desert Safaris, it’s not only for your enjoyment as part of what you pay for the experience goes directly back to conservation.

Experience nature

Before Dubai was a vibrant city of skyscrapers and fancy cars, there was not much more to see than the desert. Despite the rapid development, the Dubai desert is still one of this destination’s biggest attractions, and you will soon see why when you witness the beauty of the rolling golden sand dunes. Experiencing the desert on a wildlife drive also gives you the chance to see and learn about some of the native animals like the majestic Arabian Oryx.

Ecotourism, biodiversity and nature conservation might not be your immediate thought when exploring the United Arab Emirates (UAE), due to the glitz and glamour of the cosmopolitan cities portrayed on the covers of glossy campaigns.

However, with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launching The UAE National Ecotourism Project , across all seven Emirates, this is all about to change.

The desert is unmistakably an extreme environment yet, is still home to a diverse range of flora and fauna stretching across land, air and underwater. There are 43 protected areas in the UAE spanning 14% of the country and a selection of these are open to the public. Many are free to visit and all of them provide visitors with unique experiences and, perhaps more importantly, the opportunity to surround yourself with elements of the natural world.

Bird watching at Al Wathba Wetlands

So, what can you expect to find when you dig a bit deeper into the spirit of the UAE?

People of all ages are invited to participate in the releasing of endangered Hawksbill turtles , wander around the prime habitat of the flamingos , kayak or ride in an eco-donut around the wetlands , snorkel in the ocean , explore a UNESCO oasis and head out to the sand dunes. These are all outdoor activities which are ideal to organise during the cooler months.

Heading indoors and visiting The Falcon Hospital , The Green Planet and Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo are best saved for the summer months when high temperatures make it uncomfortable to be outside.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

Outdoor experiences to enjoy in the cooler months

Releasing hawksbill turtles.

Abu Dhabi & Dubai

Seeing sea turtles released in the UAE

The UAE is home to the Hawksbill Turtle , a marine animal which is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Special attention is focused on areas where turtles are known to return with extra precautions, awareness and education a high priority to ensure the best possible safety during nesting season.

One such protected area, which is open to the public, is the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary , a 2,002h area listed as a RAMSAR Wetlands of International Importance. Included within the area is the Ghantoot Marine Reserve.  Major Ali Saqr Sultan Al Suwaidi, President of the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG) and his team monitor and protect nesting turtles and their incubating eggs, while providing the opportunity for the people of all ages to interact free of charge and have hands-on experience releasing the turtle hatchlings.

The passion Major Ali Saqr Sultan Al Suwaidi has for preserving the natural environment and educating youth of its value and importance is evident through the short presentation he gives on arrival to the sanctuary. Visitors are then invited to assist with weighing, measuring and recording the vitals of the hatchlings before being escorted to the beach, just on sunset, to assist in their safe release at the water’s edge.

Turtle Release 03

Turtle season in the UAE is expected between the months of May to September and detailed information on successful turtle nesting and the opportunity to participate with the hatchling release can be found on the EMEG social media pages on Facebook and Instagram . Contacting by private message on these platforms is most reliable.

The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project provides another opportunity to see marine turtles up close with a viewing area of the rehabilitated turtles located within Madinat Jumeirah . The group have successfully released 1300 turtles which have been in their care, as of May 2017. You can learn more at their Facebook page  and read our review of what to expect at Madinat Jumeirah .

FLAMINGO WATCHING

Flamingo watching at Abu Dhabi's Al Wathba Reserve

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a perfect example of the Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi’s (EAD) commitment to provide assessable access to conservation areas so as many people as possible are able to enjoy the natural wonders.

The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is another RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance.  It is home to more than 250 species of birds, insects and small reptiles, although perhaps the biggest drawcard is the 4,000 migratory flamingos which gather annually in the shallow waters.

The largest numbers flock to the wetland from the Autumn to the Spring and a viewing area has been constructed on the fringe of the waterway providing the perfect shelter to sit, with a picnic and set of binoculars, to watch the graceful birds in their natural habitat.

Flamingo spotting from the hides at Al Wathba Wetlands

Visits to the five square kilometre area, which is Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, begins with a short and informative presentation which provides the opportunity to learn a little bit more about the abundant wetland ecosystem.

After participating in the information session guests are left to meander along either the 1.5km or 3km circuit at their own pace, with a reserve field guide to use along the way. Small buggies are available on site which is ideal for those who struggle to walk for long stretches of time, however, the designated paths around the area allow easy access.

Al Wathba Wetlands buggies for those less able to walk

Visiting hours are limited to Thursdays and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm with 2pm being the last entry time. Visiting the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is free of charge and the restricted times are due to the ongoing balance of protecting the natural ecosystem and providing the opportunity for visitors to benefit from the tranquil atmosphere the wetlands create.

More information can be found on the EAD website .

Entry to Al Wathba Wetlands

You might be surprised to learn just how much time people spend on the water considering the UAE is initially recognised as a nation surrounded by endless deserts and towering sand dunes.

Seasoned travellers understand the best way to experience a country is to behave like locals and, let me assure you, in a country blanketed by powerful heat during the summer, the locals gather around the water at every opportunity. Water sports are a favourite pastime and for those who enjoy combining recreation activities with nature experiences, a visit to the Eastern Mangroves wetland reserve is a definite must.

Eastern Mangroves

There are organised tours you can join where experienced guides will educate and answer questions along the way – the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency has provided a list of respected and well-established operators here . Kayaking is another popular mode of transport however, if you are looking for something a little bit a different, hiring your own Eco Donut to explore the Eastern Mangrove Nature Park, is a fun option.

The Eco Donuts are operated 100% off-grid, powered by the solar panels positioned on the roof and are easily manoeuvred by the most novice of seamen – including children! They are available for hire in an area where motorised boats aren’t permitted, making the adventure incredibly safe for all ages. Onboard you will find designated space to store snacks and beverages for an onboard picnic or, you can park at one of the jetties along the way where you can sit, or explore, a little more on foot.

Eco donut boats are a fun way to see the Eastern Mangroves National Park in Abu Dhabi

The Eco Donuts comfortably seat 6 people and are available for hire for 30 minutes to 2 hours. More information can be found on their website .  (Also keep your eye out for online specials and vouchers which make the adventure even more affordable.)

Indoor experiences to enjoy in the warmer months, the falcon hospital.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

Tourism isn’t the driving force behind the Falcon Hospital as their primary focus is diagnosing and treating injured falcons within their state-of-the-art intensive care clinical examination rooms and operating units.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) has enjoyed many awards since its establishment in 2007 including, most recently, the 2018 Middle East Responsible Tourism Award and the 2017 World’s Responsible Tourism Award for the second consecutive year – and it is easy to see why.

The hospital is opened for organised tours which begins with a visit back through history focusing on the important role and heritage of Falconry in the Middle East. The local guide, in our case, had a friendly and interactive approach and seemed happy to share his vast knowledge as led by questions from the intimate sized crowd.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital - close inspection of one of their patients

The 2-hour tour begins in the more formal rooms and moves directly into the main examination room where you are invited to watch a simple procedure of a ‘pedicure’ or ‘feather repair’ on one of the admitted falcons. Photos are encouraged and there is even an opportunity for an obligatory hold of one of the majestic animals. The tour includes both indoor and outdoor holding areas as well as the secluded moulting rooms. At the time of our visit, there were 200 falcons hospitalised on the grounds with 1800 recorded releases to date.

Due to the success of the Falcon Hospital, the facilities have also been extended to treat critically injured cats and dogs and also provide accommodation for them in a five-star pet hotel. There are also adoption and foster care options available on site.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital history and displays as part of their daily 2-hour tours

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is open to the public from Sunday to Thursday with a 10:00am or 2:00pm tour start time and bookings need to be made in advance. The Saturday tour is only available at 10:00am from October 1 st to May 31st. More information can be found on the website .

THE GREEN PLANET

The Green Planet Dubai

The Green Planet provides the opportunity to connect with elements of nature, including animal encounters, within a tropical rainforest setting. The facility is built around a magnificent tree, which is the largest indoor, man-made and life-sustaining tree in the world and houses over 3,000 plants and animals.

There are three distinct sections which begin the story starting with the forest floor, where you are met by animals such as the Archer Fish. Move on up into the mid-story layer where you might be lucky enough to hold a Python, then continue to spiral up to the top of the canopy which is directly below the spectacular bio-dome.

Along the way you might see the iconic Sloth just ‘hanging around’ and there are plenty of parrots and other fascinating birds, including my personal favourite the Toucan, to entertain and delight visitors of all ages.

The Green Planet Dubai - outside view of the building

Keep your eye out for organised educational talks through-out your visit, allow plenty of time to wander around all the display cabinets and get involved with the interactive educational equipment which all provide insight into the daily activities one could expect to find in a rainforest.

Ecosystem Education at The Green Planet Dubai

The care and knowledge shared by the award-winning and highly educated staff is second to none and it is hard to imagine any of the animals within the new-age zoo-like enclosure to be anything other than happy and content with their surrounds.

The building itself holds a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certificate due to its energy-conserving results and the consistent temperature range of 24-27 degrees Celsius, makes it a perfectly comfortable haven for visitors. Even the waterfall uses recycled water and the sound of running water adds to the effectiveness created by this ecosystem immersion.

Resident Sloth at Green Planet Dubai

The Green Planet is open from Sunday to Wednesday from 10:00am to 7:00pm and Thursday to Saturday from 10:00am-8:00pm. Tickets are sold up to one hour before closing however, I would recommend you allow a couple of hours to really enjoy all the available experiences. More information can be found on their website .

DUBAI AQUARIUM & UNDERWATER ZOO

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

In continuing with the thoughts of David Attenborough where he insists “no one will protect what they don’t care about” suggests the idea that aquariums provide an opportunity for the general public to experience, connect and better understand, the importance of our oceans.

You can’t help but be impressed the instant you walk through the 48 metre long Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo tunnel on the ground floor of the Dubai Mall.   No matter how often you see it, be enthralled by the spectacular 10-million litre aquarium tank which, in true UAE style, is one of the largest suspended aquariums in the world.

This truly spectacular setting proudly accommodates around 140 diverse species of aquatic animals, is home to the largest collection of Sand Tiger Sharks in the world, as well as many other species of sharks and rays.

Underwater World 05

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo take the initiative to introduce educational presentations throughout the centre with the intention to provide insight into the habits and behaviours of all the marine animals who call the ocean home. The aquarium offers visitors plenty of opportunities for interaction including the cage snorkelling experience or a shark dive.

For the slightly less brave of visitors, a ride in the glass-bottom boat, where you can assist in feeding the giant trevally, is something our family highly recommends.

Keep an eye on notices and announcements throughout your visit as there are many other presentations and feeding opportunities during the day which are suitable for a full range of age groups.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is open from 10:00am till 12:00pm Midnight with the last admission at 11.30pm – but please, do yourself a favour and allow longer than 30 minutes for your visit.

A bout 10 years ago, glamping hit the world's travel circuit, with a flurry of upscale tented accommodation that promised vacationers something between a luxury hotel break and an overnight camping trip. The trend evaporated almost as quickly as it had appeared, as people complained that the experience was actually nothing like either. But, today, as demand grows for sustainably -led, nature-immersed, Instagrammable holiday destinations, a new breed of glamping experiences is emerging.

Around the world, hoteliers are ditching concrete and erecting tents, replacing glass windows with transparent domes, and swapping ceilings for stargazing. From New South Wales’ Dome Retreat, perched above the Capertree Valley, to Bali’s coveted Sandat Glamping safari-style lodgings, this is a global trend – and the UAE is no exception.

From Hatta to Liwa and everywhere in between, glamping spots that embrace the idea of disconnection , while rating high on novelty factor, are popping up. For those looking to connect with nature without getting down and dirty, or seeking a new way to experience the desert or beach under starry skies, these glamping spots are worth a look.

This eco-focused site offers 20 beautifully designed tents, each of which comes with a private pool, and is designed to reflect the country's heritage. The main tent offers a communal space where freshly cooked food is served up daily, and fire pits offer pockets to cosy up in under the stars. Ecotourism is high on the agenda here. Located on the Gulf of Oman's coast, it boasts stunning Indian Ocean views, while the nearby mangroves are home to a turtle breeding area, and ornithologists will enjoy the plethora of birds that call the area home. The mountain-dotted backdrop offers a taste of adventure, with walking and hiking trails, as well as being a great base from which to jump if you want to do a spot of paragliding.

Hatta Sedr Trailers, Hatta

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Visit Hatta (@visit.hatta)

For a more rugged retreat, head out to Hatta. If retro vibes are your thing, the Hatta Sedr Trailers offer accommodation courtesy of Airstream- style campers. Nearby, the huts at Hatta Dhamani Lodges are surrounded by mountains and feel much like a small hotel room, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open on to a stilted deck. Communal barbecue facilities and viewing decks round off the experience. Hatta Wadi Hub is not far away and offers mountain biking, downhill carting, axe throwing, rope courses, wall climbing, and even a human sling shot, while the Hatta Drop-in is a water park with slides, doughnuts and jump runs. For something a bit more natural, head into the hills where the hiking is epic, or out on a kayak on the blue waters of Hatta Dam.

Long Beach Campground, Ras Al Khaimah

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nabin Maharjan (@nabin.maharjan_uk)

Part of the Bin Majid Beach Hotel portfolio , the Long Beach Campground offers an authentic glamping experience. Right on the beach, you get the thrill of sleeping under the stars but without the hassle of having to pitch a tent, source your own food or find a spot close to the ocean where you won't be washed away after dozing off. Take your pick from a simple fabric-covered bell tent with king-size beds and outdoor camping chairs, or try the safari suite tent where you will be on an elevated wooden platform and have your own bathroom. The top-billing, panoramic dome suite tents offer hexagon-shaped lodges that come with private hot tubs and towering viewing areas, offering the best vistas. Dining takes place in a tented hall that sparkles with fairy lights come evening time. Alfresco cinema, sunrise yoga, kite flying and kayaking are just some of the outdoor activities on offer at this beachside retreat.

Tourism is one of the strongest pillars of Dubai's economic growth. With the aim of attracting 20 million visitors by 2020, Dubai has set clear targets for sustainable development. Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) is a public-private partnership, with the involvement of civil society, that aims to contribute to Dubai’s broader clean energy and sustainable development targets by embedding the principles of sustainability into all aspects of the tourism sector. DST brings together all economic stakeholders involved in tourism and hospitality – from tour operators to hotel developers and operators. Its holistic approach builds on common goal to achieve the long-term objective of a sustainable economy. The initiative’s structured approach to achieving sustainability identifies four clear targets – energy efficiency; environmental protection; awareness and education; and sectoral engagement. These fall within the overall context of environmental protection, social development and economic enablers, which will enable tourism in Dubai contribute to the overall journey of mitigating climate change and promoting sustainability by using four working streams or delivery platforms.

Dubai’s New Man-Made Island Promises Eco-Resorts and Wellness Facilities

Josh Corder , Skift

April 18th, 2024 at 9:59 AM EDT

A man-made island off the shore of Dubai promising to be environmental? Let's see.

Josh Corder

A man-made island four times the size of Manhattan’s Central Park may not sound very “eco,” but the Palm Jebel Ali in Dubai is promising to house an “eco-resort,” a wellness resort, and a wellness club and various other facilities.

According to new plans released by developers, 30% of the project will run on renewable energy. Upon completion, more than 35,000 residents are expected to live there.

Palm Jebel Ali is a dormant-now-revived mega-development greenlit by the emirate’s ruler in May 2023. Sheikh Mohammed said the island will have an area of 13.4 sq km, add 110 km of coast to Dubai and be home to more than 80 hotels and resorts.

No opening date has been given but off-plan villas along the island’s fronds are already being sold for millions. No hotel operator has been named yet.

Sister island Palm Jumeirah is Dubai’s epicenter for dramatic hotels, including two Atlantis resorts, a Waldorf Astoria, a St. Regis and many more.

Here is the list of facilities released by developer Nakheel:

  • Signature Yacht Club
  • Town Center (Crescent A)
  • Lifestyle Mall
  • Leisure Park
  • Beach Clubs
  • Sunset Beach
  • Family Club Beach
  • Iconic Tower with 360° Panoramic Views
  • Sunset Waterfront Promenade
  • Sports & Wellness Club
  • Family Resort
  • Signature Wellness Resort
  • Celebration Village
  • Gateway Towers

In 2002, Nakheel, a real estate developer in Dubai, launched the Palm Jebel Ali project, aiming to surpass the size of Palm Jumeirah.

Construction commenced the same year, involving extensive dredging and land reclamation utilizing sand from the seabed. Plans encompassed residential, commercial, leisure, and hospitality sectors, including luxury hotels and marinas.

Despite these aspirations, Palm Jebel Ali encountered obstacles and delays. The global financial crisis of 2008 inflicted a severe blow to Dubai’s real estate sector, halting many projects, including Palm Jebel Ali. It was only in 2023 that the project resumed work.
