The Lake Superior Circle Tour is one of those great road trips that you always hear about. People dream of circumnavigating the world’s largest freshwater lake. The Lake Superior circle tour crosses through three US states. Michigan ,  Wisconsin & Minnesota, and a huge portion of northern Ontario, Canada. Driving around Lake Superior offers an array of activities, sights, and diverse landscapes to look upon in awe.

Lake Superior can be driven around in as little 4-5 days. Seven days will showcase the highlights. But two weeks is really the optimal time.

We drove around Lake Superior on our Honda Motorcycles and couldn’t believe how much the landscape changed before our eyes. Some people decide to do the Lake Superior circle tour in 5-days. And while we added a couple of extra days, we feel that to truly appreciate the beauty and sights of Lake Superior one should plan on two weeks to circumnavigate this natural wonder of the world. Here’s a guide to all the sights to see on the Lake Superior Circle Tour to help you plan your next epic motorcycle ride.

Day 1 Start: Sault Ste Marie, Ontario

We started our tour in Sault Ste Marie in Canada and worked our way clockwise around the Lake. Sault Ste Marie is a twin city with Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. There is more to do on the Canadian Side, so we suggest spending a day or two exploring here.

Canadian Bush Plane Heritage Centre

The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre  is definitely the highlight of visiting Sault Ste. Marie with a collection of vintage planes located in a giant hanger. It traces the history of Ontario.

There’s a forest fire management display, an area showing motors and all the bits and parts of a plane, and you can go in many planes to check out the cockpit. Our favourite was to see the huge interior of planes such as the water bomber for forest fires. After you are finished at the Bushplane Museum, take a stroll on the newly refurbished waterfront in Sault Ste Marie and look over at its US twin city.

Where to Eat – Enjoy a delicious meal at Embers Smokehouse Restaurant. It had a fabulous atmosphere offering a wide variety of smokehouse meat.

Where to stay in Sault Ste Marie:

The Days Inn – An affordable choice with jacuzzis in the rooms, excellent WiFi, and a hearty breakfast included. It has a covered parking lot too which is perfect for motorcyclists.

Day 2 – U.S. Border to Grand Marais Michigan

This route follows Lake Superior in a counterclockwise direction. After crossing the border, we stay on I75 for a short drive to highway 28 to Whitefish Point.

Whitefish Point

Whitefish Point is one of those places in Michigan that needs two days to explore. Jutting out on a long peninsula of Lake Superior we took a detour from our route to see the lighthouse museum. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is an excellent stop to learn of the maritime history of Lake Superior. It’s beautiful here and is home to the oldest operational lighthouse on Lake Superior and it’s a great spot to take in the sandy beach of Lake Superior’s South Shore.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a busy park with excellent waterfalls. One looks like a mini Niagara Falls . I could see us sticking around for a day or two for hiking, swimming and simply enjoying the scenery. There were a lot of people visiting the Falls. There are two entrances, an upper and lower falls. The upper is the larger and more beautiful of the two, but the lower had an option to take a boat or go for hikes so they are both a must-stop.

Overnight in Grand Marais

Grand Marais is a good spot to spend the night before heading on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Grand Marais bills itself as “The Gem of the Upper Peninsula” and with good reason. The beaches are spectacular. When driving along the shore of Lake Superior, one would feel as if you are in the Caribbean. (albeit the water is freezing!)

Day 3 – Pictured Rocks Michigan

Pickle Barrel Museum

While in Grand Marais, be sure to check out the Pickle Barrel House Museum. A Giant Pickle Barrel dating back to 1927 was built as a summer cottage for cartoonist William Donahey. It has been turned into a museum that is worth seeing as it’s been named in the National Register of Historic Places.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Michigan . With 100 miles of trails to explore, one could spend days camping at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It has extraordinary sandstone cliffs, sea kayaking, hiking, and other watersports, you could spend more than a day here if you wanted.

Painted Rocks Cruises – With limited time, we recommend the Painted Rocks Scenic Cruise. This is definitely the big draw of the area.

Evening – drive on to Marquette to make up some time.

Overnight in Marquette, Michigan

The Landmark Inn Marquette – We moved on a couple of hours to Marquette and stayed at this gorgeous hotel. It was an amazing heritage hotel downtown Marquette that made for a luxurious evening after a day on the bikes. It felt like a grand hotel with a European flair. Our four-post bed required a step to get into and our jacuzzi tub and fireplace were so inviting we didn’t want to leave. But there was plenty more to see, so we only had one night here.

Day 4 – Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor, Michigan

Eagle Harbor Light Station

We were up bright and early for the drive to Eagle Harbor Lighthouse Station. If you like Lighthouses, you’ll have the opportunity to see a lot of them on the Lake Superior Circle Tour. Lighthouse keepers played an important role in keeping ships afloat. Lake Superior is a treacherous lake that claimed many a sailor’s life throughout history. The Eagle Harbor Lighthouse Station probably has the best display of the lighthouse keepers’ quarters on the lake.

Copper Harbour

It was then on to Copper Harbor. The winding road made for a fun ride and the beautiful views helped to pass the time. Copper Harbour is a very scenic ride through winding tree-covered roads along the Keweenaw Peninsula so it is highly recommended that you take the trip out there for a night.

There are many things to pass the time in Copper Harbor from kayaking, cruises, hiking or simply walking along the beach to enjoy the sunset. When visiting Copper Harbor, it’s definitely worth taking a drive to the high lookout. Most people stop at the beautiful view near the bottom but make sure to keep driving for another 10 minutes or so. You’ll be treated to a view of a tree-covered valley with lake views on both sides as here you are sitting on a peninsula.

Where to Stay in Copper Harbour

Copper Harbor Pines. – This was very basic accommodation with non-air-conditioned cabins and very spotty wifi. We can’t recommend this place too high, but if you are on a budget, it is clean and comfortable. There are places to eat nearby. We went to a basic bar for dinner.

Day 5 – Bayfield Wisconsin

Today we leave Michigan and enter Wisconsin. We awoke early and had a very long drive so we didn’t make a lot of stops other than some scenic lookouts. Wisconsin is gorgeous, so be sure to take your time driving this route to Bayfield. And then give yourself two nights in Bayfield. Bayfield is a picturesque town on the water that one can spend a day or two relaxing in.

Maggies Restaurant Bayfield

We loved our dinner at the funky and retro Maggie’s Restaurant and a stroll through downtown is a must. There was a band playing in the gazebo on the waterfront when we arrived and the bar and restaurant overlooking the harbor was buzzing with people.

Where to Stay in Bayfield

The Bayfield Inn – It offered excellent and friendly accommodation that caters to motorcyclists. We had our own covered parking spot! The staff was courteous and helpful and the rooms were great with superb wifi and a sensational view of the harbor. This was one of the more urban centers and you can tell that it has catered to motorists, road trippers, and tourists for decades.

Day 6 – Explore Around Bayfield, Wisconsin

You are nearly halfway through your trip and this is an excellent day to stay put and take part in adventures. The top draw in this area is the Apostle Islands. Take a kayaking trip to the Apostle Islands to explore the sea caves of Lake Superior. The Sea Caves are gorgeous formations that are not to be missed.

There are sailing trips and scuba diving offered as well. But be prepared, Lake Superior is cold, and you will need to dive in a 7mm wetsuit or drysuit. If you want to stay on land, there’s golfing, hiking, shopping and dining.

Day 7 – Duluth, Minnesota

The drive from Bayfield to Duluth is a scenic ride with picturesque towns and great isolated roads. We were excited to get to Duluth early to experience a bit of the city, and it surprised us immensely.

Things to do in Duluth Minnesota

It is only an hour and a half from Bayfield to Duluth, so you have the entire day and evening to enjoy this surprising town. Duluth felt very cosmopolitan.

• Canal Park Drive is a cool area for shopping, eating, and sipping coffee and the lake walk is a gorgeous stroll along Lake Superior.
• Be sure to watch the Aerial Lift Bridge go up and down as everything from large tankers to small sailboats go in and out of the harbour to the open waters of Lake Superior.
• For an up close and personal view, dinner or drinks on the rooftop patio at Grandmas is an excellent choice.
• There’s an excellent entertainment and convention centre and since you’ve parked your car or bike for the evening, why not join a brewery tour?

Where to Stay in Duluth

 We stayed at Canal Park Lodge  which was a fine hotel on the waterfront and close to all amenities.

Day 8 – Duluth Minnesota to Thunder Bay Ontario

It’s time to head north and make our way back to Canada. Get ready for a long drive from Duluth to Thunder Bay on this day. At 334 km including a border crossing, we were on the road for quite a long time. But before we leave Minnesota, there is one more stop to take in the extraordinary scenic views.

Split Rock Lighthouse Minnesota

Driving along Highway 61, you’ll run right into the Split Rock Lighthouse. Stop in at the Visitor’s Centre for a look. If you have time, take a tour and go for a short walk in the National Forest Dating back to 1910, this is one of the most scenic lighthouses on the route as it is built on a 133-foot (41 m) sheer cliff overlooking Lake Superior. After a stop here, the rest of the day is spent driving to Thunder Bay.

Day 9 – Thunder Bay, Canada

After finishing up at the lighthouse, there isn’t a lot to see, so we drive directly to the border. Once you get to Thunder Bay though, it’s worth the drive. The 10 million dollar re-envisioned waterfront is filled with commissioned art from around the world and makes for a lovely walk to wind down.

Thunder Bay is starting to boom and the amount of restaurants and cafés popping up proves it. Speaking of the marina, it’s quite picturesque and you can take a sailing excursion out from downtown.

Terry Fox Memorial

A must-stop in Thunder Bay is the Terry Fox memorial. Terry Fox was a national hero who was a pioneer is campaigning for a cause. Long before it was “in style” he made a goal to run across Canada to help find a cure for cancer. This was in 1980 and a cancer survivor himself. He lost his leg to cancer and he ran with his artificial leg from Newfoundland to Thunder Bay.

Sadly, during his run, the cancer came back. He died a short while later, but his spirit lives on in all of us and we are inspired by his sacrifice to make a difference.

There is no charge to visit the Terry Fox Memorial. T he Fox family agreed to allow a monument only if nothing was sold and no admission fee was required. This is a monument that truly embodies the spirit of Canada.

Where to Stay in Thunder Bay

McVicar Bed and Breakfast – There’s no doubt about it, this is the place to stay in Thunder Bay. It is run by a lovely couple who have put a lot of thought and care into their B&B. It’s luxurious, comfortable, and relaxing. Our room was grand with a fireplace, jacuzzi, and sitting area.

Day 10 – Terrace Bay

Kakabeka Falls

It’s a leisurely day today so enjoy a coffee and hearty breakfast in Thunder Bay. Before leaving the city, it’s a great idea to make a short detour to Kakabeka Falls. Those unexpected falls are a massive set of waterfalls dropping 130 feet (40 meters.) They are known as the Niagara Falls of the North. Located just 25 minutes from Thunderbay, they are a must-stop on any Lake Superior circle tour trip. It’s easy access to view them from the boardwalk.

Terrace Bay is the launching point for the Slate Islands. We had been here before when on a kayaking trip to see the Woodland Caribou that reside here. This is a good town to stop for a rest after Thunder Bay.

Where to Stay in Terrace Bay

The Drifters Motel – We were surprised with the accommodation in Terrace Bay at the Drifters Motel. The rooms were decorated with rustic elegance and the Internet was the best we had on the entire trip! The adjoining restaurant was quite good too.

Day 11 – White River, Ontario

We didn’t stay in White River during this trip, but if you want to split up the drive between Wawa, this is a good option. Or if you want to skip Terrace Bay, you can drive directly to White River instead. White River is a four-corner town famous for Winnie the Pooh. Even though it is small, it is one of the most iconic places to visit in Canada for a historical reference. Those beloved children’s books and Disney cartoons wouldn’t be around if it weren’t for White River.

Story of Winnie the Pooh

The story of Winnie the Pooh is a bit of a morbid story but it was a sign of the times. Remember, this all happened in 1914.

“A hunter shot a bear cub’s mother and brought the cub back to town to keep as a pet (as many people did in those days). A soldier who was on his way to Europe to fight in World War I stopped in White River on the train and bought the bear cub from the hunter for $20. He brought the bear with him to Europe where it stayed in the barracks with all the soldiers.

It became their platoon’s mascot. When they were shipped off to France to fight, the soldier gave the bear to a zoo in England and that is where the bear lived out its life. Writer A.A. Milne frequented the zoo and his son Christopher Robin liked the bear giving it the nickname Pooh. Thus Winnie the Pooh was born.” Kind of sad right?

Where to Stay in White River

The White River motel – While we didn’t stay here during our motorcycle trip around Lake Superior, we have stayed in White River in the past and this motel is a basic hotel that is clean, quiet, and comfortable. It’s a good place to stay before having to catch an early morning flight to a fly-in fishing lodge in the area as well.

Day 12 – Wawa, Ontario

Wawa is a fun little town known for its giant Canada Goose located high on a hill overlooking the Trans Canada Highway. There’s a good visitors center and scenic lookout here and it’s worth stopping at Young’s Family Store for fudge, ice cream, and a quick fill-up. The original goose statue is located here as well.

Where to Stay in Wawa

Best Northern Motel  – This is an excellent choice for accommodation that caters nicely to motorcyclists. They put towels on our bike seats in the morning to soak up the dew! They have an elegant restaurant, and the rooms are sophisticated and stylish. Set a bit off the highway, surrounded by forest, it’s a perfect night to relax.

Take Your Time Driving from Wawa to the Soo

There are several scenic stops along the route this day through the area known as Algoma Country . (where Lake Superior and Lake Huron meet!) Take your time and make sure to pull off at every single one of them. Once you drive it you’ll understand why. Giant sea cliffs, gorgeous beaches, and meandering rolling roads make for a drive you will never forget! It’s a stunning drive and known as one of the Top 10 in Canada.

Petroglyphs

One of the best stops we took on the entire trip was a stop at the petroglyphs (pictographs) in Lake Superior Provincial Park. You’ll see a sign for pictographs on the highway. Not only were there ancient petroglyphs painted on the side of giant cliffs, but there was also a beautiful trail and scenery. It was the most beautiful scene we saw on Lake Superior. The walk is scenic and there’s a spectacular gorge with a giant rock wedged in at the top to see. But the big views are the giant cliffs with the painted rocks.

Day 13 – Batchawana Bay, Ontario

Our next stop took us to Batchawana Bay, located about an hour outside of Sault Ste Marie where it all began. Batchawana Bay feels like one of those places that were thriving in the ’70s or ’80s. I have a feeling many locals from “The Soo” (nickname for Sault Ste Marie) came out here to enjoy the beach back in the day. As the Northern towns begin to have their renaissance, I feel that this will pick up again soon.

Where to Stay

The Lakeshore Salzberghoff Resort was a great place to stay. The rooms have a retro feel. There are tennis courts, shuffleboard, and an excellent German restaurant serving many types of schnitzel and sausage and other German food . We highly recommend eating here.

Day 13 – Sault Ste. Marie

Which takes us back to where it all began and the end of our journey. After a last look at the Soo Locks where we tried our hand at flyfishing. Hemingway called this one of the greatest places in the world for fly fishing. After a final night, we started the journey back to Toronto.

The Lake Superior Circle Tour is one of those epic drives that must be done at least once in your life if you ride a motorcycle. You can go as fast or as slow as you like.

This Circle Tour has been on my bucket for a few years. I thought we’d wait till my husband retired, he retired and covid showed up and shut life down.

You didn’t mention if COVID was a issue anywhere and you didn’t mention crossing the border being a issue. Were passports required?

I’d love to plan a September trip, 7-9 days just for the Circle Tour. We’d like to drive to Minnesota and start the Circle Tour in Duluth so we can end up where we started. You can’t be in Duluth and not stay for a few days to enjoy cold brews & Minnesota wild rice burgers from Fitgers.

I’m just trying to get info on covid travel outside of our countries.

My husband and I did this on our motorcycles in August 2016. Took one week and saw every site mentioned here. It was an amazing trip and I am itching to do it again. Maybe next summer. Fingers crossed.

Hello, My wife and I both have long haul Harley’s and are going this route in August 2018. Your journal left us with few questions as it was superbly written and we appreciate the effort. We do wonder about bugs though. Many of our cross country trips have placed us in some dreadful swarms near water. Any info on that issue on the loop? I am sure there are some no brainer answers here but am still curious in anticipation. We have experienced the Northern Minnesota bugs so we are not anticipating a no bug trip. Thank you, Ken

Hi Ken, have a great trip! We didn’t have problems with bugs. We actually have commented on this recently. Where have all the bugs gone? We used to have bugs on our windshields all the time and the past few summers have seen no bugs. That’s not to say they won’t be there. I guess it always depends on winters. I know it was a really harsh winter the year we did our trip and bugs weren’t an issue. From remembering how summers go in the North, Spring and early Summer are big for mosquitoes and black flies. (May – June) they die off by July and August. Horse Flies and Deer flies take over in July/Auguest, but I didn’t notice them at all. Hope that helps! Enjoy your tri!

In your coments you say there is not much to do or see between Duluth and Thunderbay ont You didnt do your homework there are many falls and State Parks Gooseberry, Splitrock Lighthouse Tettagouch, many awsome overlooks historic towns likTwo Harbors Silver bay And Grand Marais this stretch i has alot to offer sounds like you missed one of the best parts I live in Duluth and never miss a couple rides a season to Grand Marais for Sven and Oles Pizza

Too bad you skipped by Nipigon, home of the new “Paddle to the Sea” Park, newly renovated downtown and the building of the only four lane suspension bridge in Ontario. Nipigon is on the move in Tourism and welcomes all visitors.

We definitely have to come back! So much to see around Lake Superior.

We just did the Lake Michigan Circle Tour last month, however we went along the shores of Lake Superior when in the U.P. It was so beautiful up there. We spent a week camping around the lake. Such a great experience!

No, we were in the car. We would have had to have greatly trimmed our packing list if we were on motorcycles.

Our Summer Great Lakes Road Trip Itinerary

This post was written in June 2021 as I was preparing to go on a Great Lakes Road Trip. I hope it inspires you to do your own Great Lakes Road Trip!

I know I have briefly mentioned in my recent travel recaps that we are planning a big Great Lakes Road Trip this summer, but I wanted to share more about our plans as we would love any travel recommendations you guys have!

Our grand plan is to drive around the Great Lakes, following the shoreline on the U.S. side as much as possible. Anything after that on the East Coast will be a very welcome bonus and we have ideas, but no set plans – except for Philly, which is one of the cities in the U.S. that is at the top of my bucket list.

We’re thinking a little something like this route for the Great Lakes, but stopping at a lot more places than you can see mentioned on the map below. 

I have been wanting to do a big Great Lakes Road Trip for years, ever since I first visited the area back in 2013. One of my weird travel goals is to swim in all five Great Lakes, and I have already swum in Lake Ontario and Lake Michigan so only three more to go. (Update 2023: I have now swam in four!)

We obviously won’t be able to visit the Canadian side on this trip but I think it will still be an amazing road trip, and I have been lucky enough to visit a couple of places on the Canadian side already, including the Bruce Peninsula, Toronto, Niagara Falls, and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Hopefully, in the future, I will be able to do a big Canadian Great Lakes Road Trip too.

I really don’t know how long it will take us to drive from Grand Portage, Minnesota to the Thousand Islands in New York State hugging the lake shores, but I’m thinking somewhere between 6-8 weeks as we want to stay awhile in places we like, especially in Chicago which is one of my favorite cities. I wouldn’t want to drive I am while there so chartering a bus with friends to tour the city would be super fun.

After that, I definitely want to visit Philly because I have never been before, then we aren’t exactly sure. Maybe Washington D.C., maybe New York City, maybe we will make it all the way down to Florida to visit Dry Tortugas and the Everglades…who knows.

We have so many ideas and I think a plan will evolve as we go. We might be working an event in South Carolina in early October so that will determine things a bit too. 

I don’t want to feel rushed and I will have work to do as we travel as well so we will just see how we go. I also want to allow some chilled-out days and rain days so we want to keep it as flexible as we can.

One of the big goals of this trip will be to visit some new-to-us states and National Parks, so I definitely want to visit every National Park around the Great Lakes and East Coast that I haven’t been to including Voyageurs, Isle Royale, Cuyahoga Valley, Shenandoah, and New River Gorge. 

The states I want to go to on this trip for the first time are Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Delaware. After this trip and if I hit up all these states, I will only have one state left to visit: North Dakota.

Along the way I am definitely looking forward to going to some cities I haven’t been to before, like Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Cleveland , as well as revisiting ones we love – I can’t wait for Deep Dish and lake swimming in Chicago, and I really hope we will have time to revisit NYC and D.C.

I’m also planning on doing lots of hiking in State and National Parks, visiting some of the lake islands, exploring some cute small towns, trying local delicacies, delicious food, and craft beer, and just generally getting more of a feel for life around the Great Lakes and different parts of the East Coast.

I can’t wait!

We are planning on hitting the road at the beginning of July (not long now!) and our first stop with be Lawrence and Kansas City where we will be spending July 4th with friends, then we’ll be working the Kansas City BBQ Festival for a few days. From there it will be up to the Great Lakes Region via Iowa.

So, this trip should definitely keep us busy for a few months!

I’m excited to take Brownie, our new RV, on the road and to jump right into boondocking and RV life. Our test run to LA where we lived in Brownie for nearly six weeks went well, so I think we are ready! 

Toby will be working hard over the next couple of weeks doing some fixes on Brownie – there have been issues with backfiring, and we still need to pass emissions to get our permanent plates – then hopefully we will be all ready to hit the road.

If we can’t get Brownie ready in time – this is the worst-case scenario – we will have to take Casper instead, but I really hope we can get everything ready.

If all goes well, we won’t be getting back to Colorado until sometime in late October to mid-November. But who knows what will happen? I’m kinda sad to be leaving Colorado for so long and to be missing fall there, but fall on the east coast is amazing too so I can’t really complain. 

So that’s our vague road trip/life plan for the next few months. I’ll be updating you all with what we get up to along the way in my monthly travel recaps, and I’m hoping I will have time to write some new content about the different places we will be visiting on our trip as well.

Great Lakes Road Trip Itinerary: Travel Guide To Exploring The Region

Experience the splendor of each of the five Great Lakes (Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario) with this ten-stop ~1,300-mile road trip. The Great Lakes, massive freshwater lakes that almost appear to resemble the ocean based on their sheer size, are certain to amaze. This road trip starts in Chicago, Illinois, takes you north up Wisconsin and into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, continues around the peninsula, and then down Michigan, along the northern coastline of Ohio, northeasterly to Niagara Falls, and ends in Toronto.

Travel Tips and Practicalities

Fly into the Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to start this road trip and fly home via the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) (assuming you’re ending the trip in Toronto). Finding flights should be easy as both are large airports. If you’re flying home via a USA airport, the Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) and Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG) are two options. Renting a car to navigate this journey will be the most efficient (unless you’re a local or driving long distance), but be prepared for a probable one-way fee. If the fee for dropping off in another country is excessive, consider returning the car in New York and then find other modes of transportation to Toronto and Niagara Falls.

Stop 1: Chicago, Illinois – Lake Michigan

Chicago, set on the banks of Lake Michigan, is an excellent starting point for this road trip. Since this trip is centered on savoring in the Great Lakes, make time to at least walk along the Navy Pier that stretches out over Lake Michigan. Maybe even take a cruise out onto Lake Michigan, and try at least a few of Winetraveler’s selection of must-visit wine bars in Chicago.

If you give yourself more time in this energetic city, soak in the city’s legendary architecture by taking a cruise down the Chicago River and/or strolling down Chicago Riverwalk. Tickets for the cruise can be purchased here . Stroll around Millenium Park, and make it to the iconic modern art sculpture, the Cloud Gate (better known as “The Bean”). Don’t go to Chicago without trying at least one deep-dish pizza from favorites such as Lou Malnati’s, Giordano’s, and/or Pizzeria Uno.

Soar high up above the city by riding the elevators to the observation floors on the 103 rd floor of the Willis Tower f/k/a Sears Tower (Skydeck Chicago) and the 94 th floor of 360 Chicago (still colloquially referred to as the John Hancock Center).

From Skydeck Chicago, glass cube ledges extend over 4 feet from the edge of the building. It may be a little intimidating to step onto the glass floor from over 100 floors high, but the bird’s-eye view is unique and quite an experience.

The 360 Chicago offers spectacular views of Lake Michigan along with skyline city views. From 360 Chicago, engage in the tilting experience whereby you step onto a glass-enclosed balcony with a moveable platform that tilts downward over the edge of the building for a brief moment. Alternatively or additionally, grab a pricey cocktail at the Signature Lounge on the 96 th floor. While the drinks are on the pricer side, the admission is free and the views are unforgettable (planning to reopen for service on April 9, 2021).

The Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile is a great hotel for families located in the heart of many of Chicago’s finest attractions. It’s only about ~0.7 miles west of the Navy Pier. The Allegro Royal Sonesta , with an old-style boutique feel, is also a lovely stay within walking distance to many sites.

If you’re hungry for a bratwurst and/or are looking for a lively atmosphere to watch a sports game, stop in at Brat Stop in Kenosha on your way to Milwaukee. Brat Stop has been around since 1961 and is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

While in Kenosha, satisfy your craving to try Wisconsin cheeses with a stop at Tim and Tom’s Cheese Shop . The store displays many refrigerators full of a variety of Wisconsin cheeses, along with sausage, cheesy popcorns, condiments, and more. If you have ever wanted a foam cheese hat or other fun items, you may be in luck here.

Drive ~90 minutes to Milwaukee. 

Stop 2: Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Lake Michigan

Milwaukee is a beautiful city situated along Lake Michigan. Stroll along the lake and around the expansive parks with open fields. Immerse yourself in museums, such as Discovery World (plans to re-open on March 27, 2021), the Harley-Davidson Museum, and the Charles Allis Art Museum (still appears to be closed as of the time of this writing, but hopefully will re-open by the time of your trip). The Milwaukee County War Memorial serves as a memorial to honor Wisconsin’s men and women who served in the U.S. armed forces. Posters along the walls contain pictures of fallen soldiers with notes paper-clipped from loved ones.

Drive ~1 hour 45 minutes to Green Bay.

Stop 3: Green Bay, Wisconsin

Green Bay has many options for the whole family, from Lambeau Field, Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame, the National Railroad Museum, botanical gardens, a wildlife sanctuary, an amusement park, a zoo, and much more. Try some wines at the nearby Ledgestone Vineyards & Winery (in-person visits by reservation only until at least Spring 2021).

For those traveling with kids, the Tundra Lodge Resort Waterpark & Conference Center  has an indoor waterpark and arcade. There’s an on-site restaurant and the lobby features large wooden timbers and a 45-foot stone fireplace. The Lambeau Field is visible from the hotel and is only a 6-minute drive from downtown Green Bay.

Lake Michigan will be visible during a decent portion of the drive. You will pass into Michigan, and through the Escanaba River State Forest and the Hiawatha National Forest. The state of Michigan touches four of the Great Lakes: Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie.

Drive ~3.5 hours to Munising.

Stop 4: Munising, Upper Peninsula of Michigan – Lake Superior

To experience Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the shores of Lake Superior, getting onto the water is a must. The rocky cliffs stretch for 15 miles along the shoreline. Take a cruise along the incredible rocky shore to admire the brilliantly colored cliffs, sea caves, and pristine beaches. The most popular cruise is ~2.5-hours which takes you ~32 miles roundtrip. Book your cruise here . The size of Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes, with a surface area of 31,700 square miles, amazes many travelers. To put its size in perspective, it’s approximately the size of Austria or South Carolina.

The options for outdoor enthusiasts (seasonally dependent in some instances) include hiking, fishing, and hunting (with licenses), kayaking, swimming, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice climbing. The National Park Service’s website lists numerous hiking trails of varying lengths.

The Holiday Inn Express Munising – Lakeview , located up on a hill on the shorelines of Lake Superior, offers balconies featuring stunning Lake Superior views. Before retiring to bed, relax on the balcony with a glass of wine and listen to the waves crash against the shore while the light of the moon shines down into the lake. The Duck Pond is a cute little restaurant, just over 2 miles from the hotel, with delicious food and many local beer options.

The Mackinac Bridge connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. It is ~5 miles long and is one of the world’s largest suspension bridges. Lake Michigan is to the west of the bridge, and Lake Huron is to the east.

Drive ~2 hours down the Upper Peninsula, and continue southward down the iconic and spectacular Mackinac Bridge and to Mackinaw City. From Mackinaw City, take a ~16-minute ferry to Mackinac Island.

Stop 5: Mackinac Island, Michigan – Lake Huron

Be swept away by the charm and history felt at every step on the small Mackinac Island. The fact that no cars are permitted enhances the charm. Modes of transportation include horse-drawn carriage rides, bicycles, and walking. Walk around the island, admire the old-style homes, old churches, tour the Fort Mackinac, shop, dine, and don’t forget to try the fudge. While in Mackinaw City, taste local wines at Mackinac Island Winery .

Stay overnight in Mackinaw City and/or Mackinac Island. If you stay in Mackinaw City, the Best Western Plus Dockside Waterfront Inn is located along the shore of Lake Huron, lakefront balconies are available, and the hotel is within walking distance to the ferry to Mackinac Island. For those staying overnight on Mackinac Island, the historic and elegant Grand Hotel  is an icon.

Drive ~2.5 hours to Bay City. If time management isn’t pressing, drive along US 23 Heritage Route along the Lake Huron shoreline (which would extend the trip by about 100 minutes).

Stop 6: Bay City, Michigan – Lake Huron

Stroll in and out of boutique shops, pretty churches, many parks, over the river via the scenic Saginaw Pier, and walk along Saginaw River via the Riverwalk Trail in the charming Bay City. Ship enthusiasts or anyone who enjoys ships should visit the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship and/or reserve a sailing experience onto Lake Huron aboard the schooners Appledore IV or Appledore V.

The Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Bay City – Riverfront , on the Saginaw River, is conveniently located in the historic downtown area and across the river from the Veterans Memorial Park. The romantic Historic Webster House Bed and Breakfast  offers classic elegance.

Drive ~1 hour 40 minutes to Detroit.

Stop 7: Detroit, Michigan

Make time to explore Detroit, as it is about the halfway point between Bay City and Sandusky. The famous Detroit Zoo, a zoo that extensively uses exhibits without bars, is a great stop. The zoo is home to giraffes (that you can feed!), grizzly bears, polar bears, seals, gorillas, anteaters, rhinos, penguins, wolves, kangaroos, and so much more. The Arctic Ring of Life has a 70-ft. tunnel that passes under a pool for polar bears. Lucky travelers will see a polar bear swim overhead. Seeing a seal swimming is much more likely.

Drive ~2 hours to Sandusky.

Stop 8: Sandusky, Ohio – Lake Erie

Sandusky, situated on the shores of Lake Erie, is best known for the Cedar Point Amusement Park. Cedar Point’s Hotel Breakers  is a luxury hotel located along a soft sandy beach at the shores of Lake Erie and right next to the Cedar Point Amusement Park (plans to re-open in May 2021) and Cedar Point Shores water park. Walk along the beach, the boardwalk, go to the amusement park, sunbathe at the beach, and go swimming. Watch the sunset below the rollercoasters.

Drive ~4.5 hours to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. If time permits, stop overnight in Cleveland and/or many other places along the Erie shore en route to Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls, the collection of three breathtaking waterfalls that straddle the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York is spectacular. It’s the world’s fifth-largest waterfall by flow rate. There are many lovely hotels boasting fall-view rooms. The Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Spa  is a great option. The views of the falls from the rooms are incredible. At night, changing colors of lights project the falling water. Snuggle up with your special someone in your room with a glass of wine and listen to the roaring sound of the waterfalls while watching the night show.

Winetraveler Tip : For those who don’t mind the cold, consider planning your visit during the winter. Many things will be closed for the season, including the Maid of the Mist, but you might get a great deal on a falls-view room.

Drive ~90 minutes to Toronto.

Stop 10: Toronto, Ontario – Lake Ontario

Toronto, a lively city, with much to explore is right along the shores of Lake Ontario. Ride the elevator up to the 114th floor of the CN Tower for floor-to-ceiling views of Lake Ontario, as well as the city. The 113th floor has a small segment of windows on the floor brave tourists can stand, sit, and walk across.

Ripley’s Aquarium is right next door and a great family place. The Casa Loma , a gorgeous gothic-style castle, is not to be missed. Scope out great food and drinking spots while in the city, and of course, Winetravelers should try Ice Wine .  

The Delta Hotels by Marriott Toronto  is essentially right across the street from the CN Tower. The Rogers Centre, CN Tower, the railroad museum, Lake Ontario, and Ripley’s Aquarium are all visible from the hotel. The CN Tower is lit up at night with lights that change colors.

Great Lakes Road Trip

Our 15-day itinerary covering lake superior, lake michigan, and lake erie in the states of minnesota, ontario, wisconsin, michigan, ohio, indiana, and illinois.

This was one of those seize-the-moment trips where we had an opportunity to make a last-minute trip to explore the Great Lakes area at a time when the Fall Colors should be in the process of intensifying.

Given the long driving distances, we necessarily had to make it at least a two-week trip.

So even though it was pretty last-minute in terms of when we made the bookings, I did spend quite a bit of preparation time to plan out our route.

Here are the highlights and logistics from this trip through Big 10 Country…

Trip Highlights

Willow Falls – this was my waterfall introduction to the Great Lakes area as it sat just across the border on the Wisconsin side after driving east of Minneapolis. It featured a satisfying wide multi-tiered cascade as well as a steep path to an overlook to take in the changing fall colors around this waterfall.

Minnehaha Falls – this waterfall was very easy to visit as it sat smack within the city limits of Minneapolis. The park itself had a bit of a festive atmosphere because it seemed like my visit coincided with some kind of party or festival that was going on.

Mall of America- this was the very first thing that Tahia and Julie did on our Great Lakes Trip, and they (especially Tahia) had a blast while I was out waterfalling. It was one of the things we sold Tahia on about this trip as it featured amusement park rides as well as plenty of shops and restaurants (as you would expect in a mall). So imagine her excitement when she finally got to experience what she was anticipating!

Big Manitou Falls – even though we had to contend with unseasonable fog during our visit, this impressively tall waterfall was a nice stop for us on the way up to Thunder Bay. We also checked out the nearby Little Manitou Falls not much further downstream.

Kakabeka Falls – we went out of the way to experience this big waterfall, which felt a bit off the beaten path for a waterfall of this size! It also gave us an excuse to experience other highlights along the North Shore of Lake Superior en route, which we’re also listing as a trip highlight further on in this page!

High Falls on the Pigeon River – This was actually a waterfall that was shared between Canada and the USA. It was certainly the most impressive of the series of waterfalls we saw on the Pigeon River, and it was well-worth the effort to experience this waterfall from both sides.

High Falls of the Baptism River – This was one of the waterfall excursions we made the time to do while doing the drive along the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. We were quite impressed with its volume and size, which was something we totally didn’t expect.

Gooseberry Falls – This was perhaps the most popular and most impressive of the waterfalls on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior. What’s shown in this photo is just a couple of the waterfall’s three main drops, which we took in with a loop hike.

Eclipse – An unexpected surprise of this trip was that it just so happened to coincide with a lunar eclipse, where we managed to catch a glimpse of the blood-red moon from the shores of Lake Superior in Duluth before clouds got in the way. It was worth staying up late though I was definitely feeling groggy on the following morning.

Bond Falls – this was one of the larger and graceful waterfalls that we encountered while crossing through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (or UP), which was the state’s more naturesque side.

Agate Falls – Also not far from aforementioned Bond Falls was this attractive waterfall, which required a little bit of a hike on a non-sanctioned trail to get the view you see here. It was a great recharger for us as we then continued on the long drive towards the heart of the UP at Munising.

Miner’s Castle and Miner’s Falls – close by the town of Munising was this excursion that allowed us to not only experience the impressive Miner’s Falls, but we were also able to drive up to this overlook of Miner’s Castle, which was an impressive formation while also allowing us to see a blowhole shooting out water against the choppy waters of Lake Superior.

Spray Falls – I had to work a bit with an eight-mile hike to reach an overlook of this scenic wonder, where a gushing waterfall spilled right into Lake Superior. It was one of the more immersive ways to experience the Pictured Rocks scenery on Lake Superior’s southern shores, which also featured some small caves as well as access to beaches.

Pictured Rocks Cruise – Given high winds on the day before that resulted in unsafe boat touring conditions, we actually had to wait until the following afternoon (when we still had a long drive ahead of us) before we could make another attempt at experiencing the signature attraction of the UP – the Pictured Rocks. Indeed, the colorful rocks, jagged cliffs, and waterfalls made our afternoon cruise well worth the wait (even if it meant less time for us to experience Tahquamenon Falls, which we’ll get to later on)…

Tahquamenon Falls – This was the premiere waterfall of the UP as it had a wide flow and some height to go with it. Reminiscent of a Great Lakes version of Cumberland Falls , we were able to get close to this falls as well as get a frontal view of it with some hikes to take it all in. There was also a Lower Tahquamenon Falls to keep us around a little while longer to bask in such scenery.

Mackinac Island – This island had no motor vehicles and a certain colonial charm that seemed hard to reproduce elsewhere. It also featured a natural arch, gardens, and plenty of fudge shops. We certainly had a relaxing time whilst here as it was one of the more memorable and unique experiences of our tour of the Great Lakes.

Smores over Pit Fire at Lake Huron – Even though it was windy night on the shores of Lake Huron, we still managed to cook some Smores over a pit fire, which definitely brought smiles to the family (especially Tahia). While most of the trip to this point was one scenic excursion after another, this intimate moment allowed us to just relax and enjoy each others’ company.

Sleeping Bear Dunes – We actually made a long day trip from Mackinaw City to Traverse City and back so we could experience these impressive dunes near the shores of Lake Michigan. Tahia definitely had fun running around in the extensive field of soft sand, and the scenery was drew plenty of camera clicks from us.

Cleveland – Even though this city has had the unfortunate reputation of being “the mistake by the lake”, we actually found it to be surprisingly charming. During our visit, the city was undergoing a lot of construction to really re-do the downtown area, but we could totally tell that it possessed “good bones” as Julie likes to say as it featured historical buildings, a happening downtown section, a rock and roll Hall of Fame (probably having something to do with how “Cleveland Rocks!” got coined), and some surprising waterfalls in close proximity.

Paine Falls – with the onset (though still too early for the full explosion) of Fall colors, this was one of the more intimate and picturesque waterfalls that we encountered while making our brief tour of Ohio. Such scenery was a total surprise to us given how close it was to the city of Cleveland.

Lanternmans Falls – With this waterfall, it was more about the ambience of a mill, a covered bridge, and forested surroundings. It definitely felt colonial even though we were very close to Youngstown, Ohio.

Indianapolis – The downtown part of this city also surprised us with a bit of impressive buildings and a Veteran’s park that was reminiscent of a kind of miniature National Mall in Washington DC. It contrasted the surprising waterfalls we encountered not too far west of the city.

Chicago – This was one of America’s great cities (right up there with New York, in my mind) as it was chock full of sights and a happening foodie scene. We not only got to go up the Sears Tower, but we also walked around the river, checked out the bean, and overall just savored the energy of this dynamic city that also seemed well-served with public transportation.

Maggie C. Daley Park – Last but not least, this giant free playground area was a huge highlight for Tahia. While I was busy watching both Tahia and the city’s impressive skyline in the distance, Julie went to a fine art museum nearby. Who knew that there could be three-story slides mazes, and all sorts of apparati for the kids to enjoy without even paying an admission fee!

Trip Advice

The main reason for the timing of our trip was to aim for the Fall Colors. On that front, it was a bit hit and miss as we apparently showed up maybe a couple of weeks too early for the big explosion of Fall Colors. That said, there were other lessons learned from this trip, and here they are…

Taking Advantage of Rewards: This trip turned out to be one of our cheaper trips that we’d ever done of this duration mostly because we took advantage of a bunch of rewards. For starters, we used our Delta SkyMiles on the flight to Minneapolis (MSP), which probably saved us over $700 per ticket! We also took advantage of hotel points at one of the Holiday Inns (IHG) as well as a few Hyatts (where it really paid off for us in downtown Chicago).

Beautiful Weather: I generally like it on the cool and crisp side, which was perfect Autumn Weather as far as I was concerned. It made the hikes comfortable, it made the leaves change color, and it also seemed to keep the bugs at bay. As far as weather was concerned, we only had to deal with rain in Cleveland and some unseasonable fog whilst driving the North Shore of Lake Superior. Other than that, we enjoyed plenty of sunny days.

Uncrowded: I wasn’t sure if our timing had anything to do with this or if it had more to do with the fact that much of the Lake Superior area was pretty remote to begin with. Whatever the case, we only had to deal with crowds to a limited extent in spots like at Gooseberry Falls. But it never felt like a crush. And when it did get busy like in Chicago, that fed more into the city’s ambience and energy. Indeed, the scenery and Nature in the Great Lakes area are unsung attractions, and thus we were able to get the maximal enjoyment from all that peace and quiet.

Too early for Fall Colors: I guess it’s hard to truly plan a trip in advance to land smack during the Fall Colors explosion, but such is the fleeting and fickle nature of this natural phenomenon. Maybe if we did this trip two weeks later, we might be able to capture more juxtapositions of Fall Colors with waterfalls. But I’d imagine this changes from year to year, and it’s all dependent on a bunch of factors though the predominant one is when the cold weather starts kicking in.

Car Seat: We actually forgot to bring our five-point-harness car seat that we had been using quite a bit in our travels over the past two years. However, we knew that Minneapolis was the headquarters of Target so we figured we could buy a cheap child seat or booster in there, and it would still be cheaper than renting out a child seat for two weeks at somewhere around $10-$15 per day.

So that’s what we wound up doing, but we were only able to find a booster seat for Tahia. And it turned out that it didn’t work that well for her on this trip (she was too petite for it to be effective). So we were kind of stuck with it and we definitely had to watch what she was doing, especially if she wasn’t sitting right. Similarly, I had to really watch my driving to minimize the chances of her getting injured.

At the end of the trip, we found a Target near Chicago, where we could return the booster since it wasn’t working too well for us.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Fly from LAX to Minneapolis

Overnight: hyatt place minneaplis airport (minneapolis, minnesota, usa).

We flew using our Delta Skymiles, which actually saved quite a bit of money. Once we got the rental car, then, we divided-and-conquered as Julie and Tahia went right into the Mall of America while I visited Willow Falls and Minnehaha Falls .

Day 2: Drive from Minneapolis to Thunder Bay

Overnight: holiday inn express (thunder bay, ontario, canada).

This was a long day of driving that included stops to Big Manitou Falls , Little Manitou Falls , High Falls on the Pigeon River , and Kakabeka Falls . We probably could have squeezed in more roadside stops but thick fog prevented us from getting any of the desired lake views en route.

Day 3: Drive from Thunder Bay back south to Duluth

Overnight: comfort suites canal park (duluth, minnesota, usa).

This long drive headed pretty much back the way we came before stopping for the night in Duluth. Along the way, we stopped for Kakabeka Falls , the Canadian side of High Falls on the Pigeon River , Middle Falls on the Pigeon River , High Falls on the Baptism River , and Gooseberry Falls . In the night time, we tried to stay up late to watch the full moon turn red due to the lunar eclipse.

Day 4: Drive from Duluth to Paulding

Overnight: running bear resort (paulding, michigan, usa).

On this day, we cut across Northern Wisconsin into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Along the way, we visited Potato River Falls , Copper Falls and Brownstone Falls , Superior Falls , and Bond Falls .

Day 5: Drive from Paulding to Munising

Overnight: holiday inn express munising-lakeview (munising, michigan, usa).

On this day, we drove into the heart of the UP while visiting waterfalls along the way. Among them were Agate Falls , Munising Falls , Miners Falls with Miners Castle, and Wagners Falls . We were supposed to do a Pictured Rocks cruise on this day, but high winds meant it was unsafe to do such a tour so they cancelled all tours on this day.

Day 6: Drive from Munising to Paradise

Overnight: magnuson grand hotel (paradise, michigan, usa).

We had to delay our drive from Munising to Paradise as a result of yesterday’s Pictured Rocks Cruise cancellations due to high winds. So that afforded me the morning to do Spray Falls before we finally got to do the coveted Pictured Rocks Cruise. Then, on the way to Paradise, we visited the impressive Tahquamenon Falls before it got dark.

Day 7: Drive from Paradise to Mackinaw City

Overnight: clearwater lakeshore motel (mackinaw city, michigan, usa).

We began the day with a morning visit to Lower Tahquamenon Waterfalls while waiting for the fog to subside. Then, after checking into Mackinaw City, we took a boat ride to Mackinac Island, where we spent most of the day.

Day 8: Day trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes by Traverse City

This day was dominated by a long out-and-back drive to the Sleeping Bear Dunes near Traverse City. It also was the first day of the trip without a waterfalling excursion so by the time we finally made it back to our accommodation, we then spent an after-dinner evening cooking Smores by the fire on the shores of Lake Huron.

Day 9: Long drive from Mackinaw City to Cleveland

Overnight: hyatt regency cleveland at the arcade (cleveland, ohio, usa).

This was a day dominated by a very long drive across the length of Michigan into Ohio. If there had to be a day of rain, this was it since we were pretty much sitting all day in the car. Once we got to “The Land”, we then briefly checked out the downtown area as well as the attractive Arcade within the Hyatt.

Day 10: Waterfalling in the morning, then exploring Cleveland the rest of the day

During the morning, we drove out to Paine Falls , Lanterman’s Falls , and Brandywine Falls . In the afternoon, we checked out more of downtown Cleveland (including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Day 11: Drive from Cleveland to Indianapolis

Overnight: hyatt regency indianapolis at state capitol (indianapolis, indiana, usa).

We made the long drive from Cleveland then overshot Indianapolis to visit Upper Cataract Falls and Lower Cataract Falls . We then spent the afternoon and evening checking out the downtown scene in Indianapolis.

Day 12: Drive from Indianapolis to Chicago

Overnight: hyatt centric the loop (chicago, illinois, usa).

This was yet another long driving day as we cut through Illinois towards the only waterfall we’re aware of in the state of Illinois at Cascade Falls Unfortunately, it wasn’t flowing. We then spent the rest of the evening in downtown Chicago.

Day 13: Chicago

Finally, we got to enjoy a day without driving. That said, it was a full day of activities as we let Tahia play at Maggie C. Daley Park, we checked out the famous bean, then spent the majority of the day in the city’s downtown.

Day 14: Chicago

This was another day at leisure in Chicago, where we went up the Sears Tower, then checked out some museum before letting Tahia have one more go at the Maggie C. Daley Park.

Day 15: Fly home to Los Angeles

On this day, we drove early to the airport, then returned the rental car, and finally caught our flight back home.

Erie, Pennsylvania

Erie is an industrial city located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, the nation’s 12th largest lake, and is home to a variety of attractions, including the Presque Isle State Park . The state park offers all-season activities for all ages and has beautiful beaches, forests, and wetlands. 

For those who want to explore the natural beauty of Erie, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and biking on the 10-mile trail or going fishing in one of four designated fishing areas. You can also enjoy bird watching or nature walks through the beautiful woods.

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland is a cozy little city with many amenities and beautiful natural spaces on the northeastern edge of the Great Lake Chain. Lake Erie lies on the west side of town and offers boating, fishing, swimming, and more activities for those who want to take a dip. Meanwhile, miles upon miles of forests lie on the east side, where hikes can be taken. 

A trip to Cleveland, Ohio, would not be complete without a visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, where visitors can explore all things rock n’ roll, including live performances and memorabilia from some of the world’s most famous musicians! Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

The city center is a historical marvel with Victorian-style homes lining the streets. The impressive locks are worth a visit, as well as the International Bridge, where you can simultaneously walk across it and take in spectacular views of both lakes from opposite sides!

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago is one of the most iconic cities in the country, both for its skyline, architecture, and deep-dish pizza. Located on Lake Michigan, it’s a city known for thinking big (after all, it is called The Windy City).  

For your next family getaway to the great lakes of the USA, consider a trip to Navy Pier! There are boat tours as well as exhibits to explore throughout the pier. Muskegon, Michigan

Muskegon is located on the southeast shore of Lake Michigan. The state park has a good number of hiking trails as well as gorgeous views of Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. Other fun things you can do in Muskegon include biking or running the 6.2-mile Nature Trace bikeway. There is also an apple orchard nearby!

Day 1 & 2

Toronto, ON

Arrive into Toronto, check into your hotel and enjoy relaxing or explore the cosmopolitan city.

Start out your second day at the impressive Ripley’s Aquarium near the base of the CN Tower, the largest of its kind in the nation with 35,000 square feet of space that includes a viewing tunnel, a moving walkway through the Dangerous Lagoon and some 450 ocean and freshwater creatures, including colourful tropical fish, sharks and rays. Afterward take the glass-fronted elevator to the top of CN Tower, Canada’s tallest structure where you can walk the glass floor and see the landscape below before dining on the exceptional cuisine in the revolving restaurant. If you have time to spare, it’s all yours – wander the diverse, multi-cultural neighbourhoods where it feels as if you’re exploring the world, all in one city.

Day 3 & 4

Huntsville, ON (147 miles)

Pick up your car and travel north from the banks of Lake Ontario to Huntsville, passing charming rural villages until reaching Muskoka cottage country, known for its sparkling lakes, rolling hills, and pine and granite landscape. Before checking into your Huntsville hotel, make a stop at Muskoka Pioneer Village, which offers the chance to step into the shoes of those who lived in the Muskoka region between 1880 and 1910. It includes a wide range of buildings that would have been included in a town during this period, like a one-room school house, church, cabins, woodworking shop, blacksmith shop and more along with costumed narrators that engage visitors with hands-on activities like pioneer baking, blacksmithing and candle dipping.

Just outside Huntsville, you can discover the wilderness of Algonguin Provincial Park by taking a hike on its extensive network of trails, or Arrowhead Provincial Park is perfect for trails and beach swimming

Day 5 & 6

Killarney, ON (157 miles)

Venture further into the hinderlands of the province to Killarney and its jaw-dropping landscapes that once inspired the legendary Group of Seven artists, renowned for its brilliant blue lakes, dense pine forests and ancient white quartzite cliffs. You’ll spend two nights at Sportman's Inn Resort & Marina, which makes an ideal base for experiencing Killarney Provincial Park. In the morning you’ll discover just why the “Group of Seven” made the area their artistic inspiration by hiking the trails of the park, or head out on one of the many lakes to paddle a kayak or canoe, fish or sail.

Day 7 & 8

Timmins, ON (249 miles)

Your next stop is Timmins, known for its many art galleries, golf and an extensive trail system, while the surrounding area is home to more than 500 lakes and rivers. The “City with a Heart of Gold,” offers small town charms and a rich history. Start your visit by taking one of the many mining tours, or take a tour of the Cedar Meadows Wildlife Park for a close encounter with Canadian moose.

During your full day in the Timmins area, take advantage of the opportunity for outdoor adventuring by going hiking, kayaking, canoeing or biking.

Wawa, ON (205 miles)

Head west to Wawa, passing through the most remote areas of the province where awe-inspiring scenery comes into view, including endless forest, striking cliffs and lakes. Once in Wawa, take a stroll along the boardwalk adjacent to Wawa Lake and then slip off your shoes so that you can dip your toes into Lake Superior before relaxing on the white sand beach. If you can tear yourself away from the view, learn about First Nations history at Sandy Beach Eco-Interpretive Park.

Day 10 & 11

Sault Ste. Marie, ON (141 miles)

Travel south on the Trans-Canada highway and along the rocky coast of Lake Superior to reach today’s final destination, Sault Ste. Marie where you’ll find an ideal blend of urban amenities, and an abundance of nature, including rugged shores, sandy beaches, untouched forests, peaceful rivers, and two Great Lakes. Take a walk along the waterfront in the City Centre to discover the many historic sites and attractions before relaxing for the evening in your hotel.

Wake up to enjoy a day exploring this northern Ontario City. You might want to take a Sault Locks tour to cruise the first original canoe lock, or visit the many museums and galleries, like the Bush Plane Museum and the Sault Ste. Marie Art Gallery and Museum. With multiple parks and preserves nearby, you’ll have the opportunity for all sorts of activities too. Get out on the Caribbean-like waters at Pancake Bay Provincial Park, paddling the picturesque shoreline of Lake Superior, or hike the Pancake Bay Nature Trail.

Day 12 & 13

Manitoulin Island, ON (204 miles)

On Manitoulin Island, you’ll have yet another chance for outdoor adventure, along with a rich cultural history. The world’s largest freshwater island, it’s home to five First Nation reservations and one of the oldest settlements in North America, dating back nearly 10,000 years. Explore the island’s cultural and geographic history before settling in for the night.

In the morning, you might go “lake-hopping,” as this geographic wonder hosts over 100 lakes, including Lake Manitou which has a number of lakes on its own. This is the ultimate place for activities like fishing, boating and even diving, but it also offers some fantastic hikes. Take the Cup and Saucer Trail where you’ll get a jaw-dropping vista over the escarpment, lakes and wetlands, and then Visit Bridal Veil Falls where you can capture a unique picture from behind the curtain of water. Cap off the day with a sunset canoe paddle.

Tobermory, ON (51 miles)

Travel to the south shore of the island to board the Chi-Cheemaun ferry which will bring you across the deep waters of Lake Huron to the harbour village of Tobermory and Bruce Peninsula National Park, which is actually made up of two parks one of which is under the water. On land, hike one of the many scenic trails and then, if you’re into scuba diving, you can dive down to see the marine park which preserves shipwrecks and natural diving obstacles.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (236 miles)

Your grand finale is Niagara Falls, which marks the U.S. and Canada border with more than 750,000 gallons of water per second thundering down the 167-foot waterfall known as the most powerful on the continent. Along the way you’ll pass through the orchards and vineyards of this region known for its winery chateaus, ideal for tasting and touring. The highlight of day, and one of the highlights of a lifetime, however, is your next stop. Don a rain jacket and hop aboard the Hornblower Niagara Cruise where you’ll join the Voyage to the Falls tour, visiting American Falls, and then sailing past the massive rock formations to Horseshoe Falls, which many refer to as the most breath-taking of the two. Your hotel this evening is in the charming and picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Today it’s time to say goodbye to Ontario and return to the Toronto International Airport for your flight back home.

Great road trips define Canada .

Every province and territory can lay claim to a rich selection of magnificent journeys, but at the top of the list are a clutch of big-hitting scene-stealers – epic strips of asphalt doused with glints of only-in-Canada magic. Expect massive glaciers, foraging fauna, stormy coastlines and the kind of raw, uncompromising wilderness that’s rare if you head further south.

In this modern and affluent country, roads are generally wide and well-maintained and drivers are scrupulously polite. However, you can often go a long way without seeing a gas station or decent food, especially in the north, so stock up on supplies and emergency gear.

To sample our favorite road trips in Canada, load up your playlist with Drake, Rush and the Tragically Hip, and kiss the urban traffic snarl-ups goodbye.

1. Sea to Sky Highway, British Columbia

Best road trip for families Vancouver–Whistler; 121km (75 miles); allow 4–5 hours

From the deluxe, hill-hugging homes of West Vancouver to the neo-alpine ski village of Whistler , the Sea to Sky Highway rarely lets you out of its rapture. Comprising the most spectacular section of Hwy 99, which runs for 377km (234 miles) from the US border to Cache Creek, this drive traverses the steep-sided slopes of Howe Sound before contouring north through the Coast Mountains to Whistler.

If you can take your eyes off the collage of peaks, forests and fjords, this winding thoroughfare has many worthy stops, especially if you're in the market for hiking, climbing or mining history. Horseshoe Bay is the city’s main ferry terminal and the starting point for a tough, rocky hike up to Eagle Bluffs for eagle-eye views over Vancouver.

Further north, Britannia Beach is a one-time company town whose former mining facility – now a  museum and national historic site – concertinas down a steep hill. The small but growing town of Squamish is an obligatory stop for refueling (get gas at the local Shell station and coffee at the funky Zephyr Cafe ) and a ride on the finest gondola in BC.

Planning tip:  Locals fondly recommend an extended stop at Function Junction a few kilometers south of Whistler. You can hike through the forest to a 1950s train wreck that has been turned into an inspirational art project and buy lunch at peerless Purebread , possibly the finest purveyor of baked goods this side of Paris.

2. Icefields Parkway, Alberta

Best road trip for mountains and glaciers Lake Louise–Jasper; 230km (143 miles); allow 5–6 hours

The Icefields Parkway – or the Promanade des Glaciers, as it’s romantically known in French – is the crème de la crème of Canadian drives. This 230km (143-mile) trip links the nation’s two most emblematic national parks, Banff and Jasper , leaving even the most verbose travel writers flailing for adjectives.

Starting near the robin-egg-blue waters of Lake Louise , home to the elegant Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel , the route penetrates north through some of the most elemental scenery on the planet. Giant mountains, craning trees and powerful waterfalls are mere supporting acts to the gargantuan glaciers and abundant wildlife, which gets even more copious as you approach Jasper.

You'll pass a litany of potential stops en route, many offering access to superb viewpoints and short interpretive hikes. Headliners include cerulean Peyto Lake , Jasper’s “hanging” Skywalk and the Athabasca Glacier – a frozen tributary of the colossal Columbia Icefield.

3. Klondike Hwy, Yukon

Best road trip for wilderness Skagway–Dawson City; 708km (440 miles); allow 2 days

Following the same basic route as the 19th-century’s greatest gold rush, this sealed highway starts in Skagway, Alaska , and crosses the Canadian border near the tiny town of Fraser, before passing through Carcross and the world’s smallest desert en route to Whitehorse . Here, you can wise up on territorial history and the nuances of the gold rush at the town’s McBride Museum .

Head north of Whitehorse for unadulterated wilderness. Be sure to stop at the Braeburn Lodge , a rustic roadhouse known for its sweet, soccer-ball-sized cinnamon buns and brusque backcountry service. Blink and you’ll miss the self-sufficient communities of Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing. Plan for a longer stop at Five Finger Rapids, where a wooden staircase leads down to a viewing platform over the choppy Yukon River. The rafts of numerous Klondike prospectors upended on this rough stretch of water.

As you approach Dawson City, mine tailings from century-old dredging operations dot the roadside, alongside gravel piles and small ponds. The town is an understated beauty, filled with authentic gold rush history and the literary ghosts of novelist Jack London and poet Robert Service.

4. Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia

Best road trip for a coastal drive St Ann’s Bay–St Ann’s Bay; 298km (186 miles); allow 1 day

One of the main reasons travelers come to Nova Scotia is to drive the Cabot Trail, the looping, dipping roller-coaster of a road that snakes its way around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island .

Offering epic views of rolling seas and thick forests, and – if you're lucky – the chance to spot a moose, eagle or even a whale, this maritime classic traverses the edge of Cape Breton Highlands National Park . The park is home to the province's grandest scenery, richest wildlife and best hiking trails .

Heading counterclockwise on this circular route, you’ll encounter Ingonish Beach , a long, wide ribbon of sand sheltered in a bay cocooned by gentle hills, and Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia’s premier whale-watching hub. The Skyline Trail, the Cabot’s hiking highlight, meanders through evergreen forests and along windy cliff-tops to a spectacular ridge.

Other favorite stops include Cheticamp, Nova Scotia's most vibrant and thriving Acadian community, and Baddeck, home to a museum dedicated to former resident Alexander Graham Bell, pioneer of the very handy device known as the telephone.

5. Gaspésie Tour, Québec

Best road trip for French-Canadian culture Sainte-Flavie–Sainte-Flavie; 822km (511 miles); allow 3 days

Towering cliffs, freshly-caught seafood and Québécois sea shanties are all on the itinerary as you circle La Gaspésie , the lofty peninsula contoured by Rte 132 on Québec ’s eastern shores. Easing out of Sainte-Flavie, make time to stop near Pointe-à-la-Croix at the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site , where a French-British naval clash in 1760 marked the death knell for French colonial ambitions in Canada.

The Parc National de Miguasha has the world's leading cache of ancient fish fossils, with a museum illustrating how prehistoric sea creatures evolved into tetrapods. The crown jewels of the Gaspé Peninsula are Rocher Percé , a huge offshore limestone rock formation with a seemingly gravity-defying archway, and blustery Forillon National Park , where mountains plunge directly into the choppy ocean and rugged cliffs stand sentinel over spouting whales.

Planning tip:  After rounding the tip of the peninsula, you’ll head back along the St Lawrence waterway where it’s worth scheduling a lengthy stop in the Parc National de la Gaspésie . A short drive inland from Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, the park is a rough mountainous realm with fine hiking options.

6. Viking Trail, Newfoundland

Best road drive for archaeology Deer Lake–St Anthony; 434km (270 miles); allow 1 day

Imagine ancient indigenous burial grounds, 1000-year-old Viking remains, monumental icebergs, breaching whales and an almost supernatural national park whose trippy tablelands are a textbook guide to plate tectonics. Welcome to Newfoundland’s epic Rte 430, which links a patchwork of fog-cloaked coves, snow-capped mountains and stormy fjords.

Starting inauspiciously in the town of Deer Lake, the route plunges into Gros Morne National Park pausing at its waterside hub, Rocky Harbour, a nexus for trails and boat trips with a fun wildlife museum .

Further north lie two important archaeological sites: Port au Choix , a national historic site dedicated to the 5500-year-old burial grounds of three different indigenous groups, and L'Anse aux Meadows , where Leif Erikson and his Viking buddies arrived approximately 1000 years ago – the first known European settlers in the Americas.

Planning tip:  The trail ends at St Anthony, a small fishing village with a rough-hewn charm that makes a perfect stop for whale- and iceberg-watching.

7. Lake Superior Coastline, Ontario

Best road trip for lakes Sault Ste Marie–Thunder Bay; 700km (435 miles); allow 2 days

Even Canada’s most populated province can seem positively remote as you motor along the northern shores of the world’s largest freshwater lake, following a quiet segment of the Trans-Canada Hwy through a necklace of provincial parks.

Pancake Bay Provincial Park hides one of Canada's finest stretches of sugary sand, and if you pull up off-season, you might have it all to yourself. Lake Superior Provincial Park protects a more precipitous coastline punctuated with the exposed rock of the Canadian Shield.

There are indigenous pictographs in the area and fabulous opportunities for stargazing (the park was designated a dark sky preserve in 2018).  Similar solitude awaits at Rocky Neys Provincial Park , where Lawren Harris of the Group of Seven came to paint amid craggy beaches and roaming caribou.

Approaching Thunder Bay, you'll pass the jagged Sleeping Giant Peninsula – a series of flat-topped ridges that resemble a large reclining man. The rugged, forested terrain here is characterized by cliffs, hiking trails and plentiful fauna, including moose, wolf and lynx.

The Great Lakes hold  21% of the world’s freshwater , create their own weather patterns, and have some of the most unique geology in the entire Midwest. These lakes are home to two American national parks, and three national lakeshores, and countless waterfalls. When it comes down to it, the Great Lakes are the one of the world’s most underrated spots for outdoor recreation, and a well-kept secret.

I grew up in the area, and worked as a sea kayaking guide in the Apostle Islands sea caves. Now, I’m lucky enough to live on Minnesota’s beautiful North Shore. After exploring this area for years, here are the best hidden gems to add to your Great Lakes Road Trip:

Stop One: Sleeping Bear Dunes

There’s no better place to start off your dream road trip than  Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore , just south of Traverse City. Sleeping Bear is known for massive sand dunes over Lake Michigan, incredible sunsets, and hiking. The lakeshore also has spring wildflowers, dark skies, and some of the best beaches in the world.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is the perfect starting point for your dream Great Lakes Road Trip. My favorite part of Sleeping Bear? That tropical-looking water.

For a hard hike, check out the Dune Climb, Manitou Islands, or Alligator Hill. For handicap accessible spots, check out the Pierce Stocking Scenic drive.

Stop Two: Torch Lake and the Grass River

Next, head north to an overlooked section of Michigan, the  Chain of Lakes.  This is a great spot to hide from the busy summer tourism season, tackle some more intense hikes like the  Jordan River Trail , paddle on flat water, and spot wildlife. After, stop by  Short’s Brewery  for some Michigan beer and food! My favorite meal is the White Pepper Sandwich paired with a flight of whatever is on tap.

Looking to see river otter? Head over to the  Grass River Natural Area  and hike the Sedge Meadow Trail, a true Michigan hidden gem. The Grass River Natural Area has handicap accessible trails, as well as an adaptive trail for the visually impaired.

Stop Three: Tahquamenon Falls

One of the  largest waterfalls  this side of the Mississippi, this iconic river drops nearly 50 feet at the Upper Falls. Tahquamenon Falls is a must-see on your Great Lakes Road Trip. Tannins from trees stain the water reddish brown, and in the winter large ice formations build around the falls. The state park offers a variety of hiking trails varying in length from 1 to 8 miles, with several handicap accessible trails to the Upper Falls.

Stop Four: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Tucked away in Munising, Michigan, the  Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore  is home to sandstone cliffs towering over Lake Superior, some of the most iconic views in Michigan, and at least seven waterfalls. The Pictured Rocks is a must see section of the Lake Superior shoreline, with beautiful kayaking and hiking, and an important stop on any Great Lakes Road Trip.

Hike along the 10.5 mile  Chapel-Basin Loop  to get the best taste of the cliffs including waterfalls, beaches, and the only section of trail in the park where the cliffs can be seen from land.

Both the Munising Falls Trail and Miner’s Castle Trail are handicap accessible and can easily be accessed from near the Munising Falls Visitors Center.

Stop Five: The Keweenaw Peninsula and Copper Harbor

From Munising, head north along Superior to Copper Harbor, Michigan. Check out the mountain biking trails, incredible white sand beaches like Bete Grise, and cutest brewery in Michigan,  Brickside .

To watch the sunset, enjoy the  Brockway Mountain Scenic Drive .

Stop   Six: Bond Falls

Deep in the Upper Peninsula woods and off the beaten path, Bond Falls is one of the most unique waterfalls in Michigan. It’s a quick and easy hike out to both the upper and lower falls, with multiple viewing platforms for different angles of the falls. Bond Falls is a must-see on any Great Lakes Road Trip.

Bond Falls is considered fully wheelchair accessible.

Stop Seven: Potato River Falls   and Copper Falls

As you enter the Wisconsin Northwoods, be on the lookout for hidden waterfalls.  Copper Falls State Park  is a wildly popular hiking system and for good reason– the park is home to three large waterfalls and countless smaller cascades. A half-mile of the trail, including that which features Brownstone and Copper Falls, is wheelchair accessible.

While Copper Falls is likely to be crowded in summer months, Potato River Falls is tucked away in the woods. With a dramatic upper and lower set of falls, this hidden gem is worth the detour.

Stop Eight: Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

One of the dreamiest kayaking destinations in the world, the  Apostle Islands National Lakeshore  is home to Lake Superior sea caves, 21 islands, and incredible beaches and shoreline. These big lake gems belong on just about every bucket list.

Book a sea kayaking trip with  Lost Creek Adventures , or cruise with  Apostle Islands Cruises  (handicap accessible).

In Bayfield, visit  Maggie’s  for flamingo-themed fun and the best sweet potato fries of your life.

Stop Nine: Amnicon Falls

Amnicon Falls  is an off the beaten path Northwoods gem that will have you feeling like you stepped out of a fairytale. Walk through the forest along the Amnicon River, and pass through a covered bridge above the falls. Visit in the early morning or camp at the campground near the falls to experience the area at sunrise. This park offers a handicap accessible trail as well as picnic area.

Stop Ten :  Two Harbors, MN

Head north of Duluth, Minnesota to begin the North Shore section of your Great Lakes road trip. Around Two Harbors, visit Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, and Tettegouche State Park. Looking for a challenge? Head out to backpack the  Superior Hiking Trail  for several days.

Much of Gooseberry Falls is accessible by wheelchair, as is the guided tour of Split Rock Lighthouse in Split Rock State Park. The Two Harbors Light, pictured below, is also handicap accessible.

Stop Eleven: Grand Marias, MN

Continue along the North Shore to the small town of Grand Marais, MN. Visit  Cascade River State Park  for beautiful waterfalls, and hike the Superior Hiking Trail to Pincushion Mountain Overlook. In the morning, stop for coffee at  Java Moose , and watch the sunrise at the Grand Marias Light (Artist’s Point).

For handicap access, visit Grand Marais Harbor, or head up to Grand Portage to see  High Falls  on the Pigeon River.

Grand Marais is the perfect spot to end your Great Lakes Road Trip, with countless trails to explore and waterfalls to stumble upon.

Bonus: Isle Royale National Park

In August 2024 the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure (GWTA) visits Northern Ontario to showcase  the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail between Lake Superior and Manitoulin Island. This celebrated fully supported cycle tour will run from August 13-20 and start in Sault Ste Marie. Over the course of a week the tour will follow the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail along the Lake Huron North Channel to Little Current on Manitoulin Island.

Make your first stop at Navy Pier for amusement rides and a range of eateries. Don’t miss a cruise down the Chicago River for a unique perspective on the city’s architecture. While you’re here, a slice of deep-dish pizza is a must. For breathtaking views, choose between Willis Tower’s Skydeck or 360 Chicago.

Continue to Milwaukee, Wisconsin —just an hour and 45 minutes away. This city blends contemporary life with its rich industrial history. Take a peaceful walk along the scenic lakefront, and don’t overlook the Harley-Davidson Museum for a slice of iconic American engineering. Also, pay respects at the Milwaukee County War Memorial, a touching tribute to those who have served.

Stops 3 & 4: From Green Bay’s Wildlife to Munising’s Scenery

Head next to Green Bay , Wisconsin, a place where football is just the beginning. A tour of Lambeau Field is almost mandatory for any visitor. Stops 5 & 6: Mackinac Island’s Timelessness to Bay City’s Naval History

Cross the iconic Mackinac Bridge to reach Mackinac Island, Michigan. Experience a simpler time where cars are absent and horse-drawn carriages are the norm. Explore historic Fort Mackinac and savour some of the island’s famous fudge. Choose to spend the night on the island or return to the mainland for budget-friendly accommodations.

Next, explore Bay City, Michigan . Enjoy the charm of this small town with its scenic riverfront. The Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum is a compelling experience for history buffs. To relax, take a stroll down the Riverwalk Trail.

Stops 7 & 8: Detroit’s Urban Jungle to Sandusky’s Beaches

Motor on to Detroit, Michigan, a city brimming with cultural experiences. The Detroit Zoo sets itself apart with its bar-free environments. For art lovers, the Detroit Institute of Arts offers an impressive collection.

Head over to Sandusky, Ohio, renowned for its Cedar Point Amusement Park . However, beyond the rollercoasters, find a tranquil beach and ferry rides to nature trails on nearby islands. Discover the region’s maritime history at the Maritime Museum.

Stops 9 & 10: The Spectacle of Niagara Falls to Toronto

In March 2021, we set out on what would prove to be the single longest road trip within one country that we've ever done.

Or probably will ever do…

Spanning a combined 4 months of driving, we visited almost every province (at least those that can be accessed in a 2 wheel vehicle).

Covering more than 15,000km this took us from the very eastern coast in Halifax, all across to the Rocky Mountains!

Up through the Yukon (with a cheeky road trip through Alaska ) and then all the way down the west coast to Vancouver.

Along the way exploring and road tripping many of Canada’s best places to visit .

But instead of writing what would end up being an impractical and unending 4 month Canada road trip post; I instead wanted to break things up.

Highlighting what we believe to be the 10 absolute best road trips to take within the country.

Each one broken down into manageable 1 - 2 week lengths!

First up… do you have your vehicle sorted?

For our journey across Canada we had our trusty camper called Helen (who we converted ourselves by the way!).

We shipped her all the way from England, and after finishing in Canada headed south all the way to the bottom of South America.

But if you don't already have a vehicle sorted, you have two main options ...

1. Hire an RV / campervan

There are plenty of fantastic RV rental firms in Canada , offering a whole host of vehicles to fulfil the needs of any camper or road tripper.

The best thing about renting an RV is that you have your vehicle, accommodation and often your meals all in one place.

Which can save a LOT of money on accommodation and eating out.

Plus you have far greater flexibility in where you can stay each night and what you can see, so this would definitely be my top choice.

To rent a camper, your best bet is to head on over to either:

Some RVs can be large and more difficult to manoeuvre, so people might want to take on a Canada road trip by car.

10 Best road trips in Canada

The list below is based on when we visited each region (so east to west).

It's not based on what we believe to be best to worst; as making such a list would be very difficult.

Though I can safely say that my top two favourites are numbers 6 & 7.

Okay here it goes…

1. Cape Breton Trail (+ Eastern Nova Scotia from Halifax)

This is where we started!

Cape Breton is an island at the eastern end of the Nova Scotia province .

It’s best known for its Cabot Trail , a roadway encircling the island, taking travellers through dense forests and rugged coastline. 

This has to be one of the most stunning drives in all of Canada.

We visited Cape Breton Island in March/April and were the only ones there. It was a truly magical and unique experience!

It was wild, and the weather got crazy at times, but even at that time of year it was a beautiful and unforgettable adventure.

The drive along the Cabot Trail passes through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park , with amazing views along the way.

There are plenty of stops to camp and hike, as well as loads of other adventure activities such as gold panning, sea kayaking, cycling, or even a whale watching tour.

In the winter months skiing and snowmobiling are popular activities.

There are a total of 26 hiking trails throughout the National Park, the most popular being the Skyline Trail . It’s a 5 mile loop encompassing incredible views of the Gulf of St Lawrence, as well as fantastic opportunities for spotting wildlife including moose, bald eagles and bears.

We only got to see the northern part of Nova Scotia, but nevertheless the 360 km drive from Halifax along the eastern shore toward Cape Breton was wonderful. We saw so much wildlife and the ocean views there are amazing.

You could always take more time to then see the southern end of Nova Scotia too.

2. Halifax to Quebec City

There’s over 1,000 km between Halifax and Quebec City, a journey which passes through New Brunswick and a bunch of National Parks.

Some of the best things to do in New Brunswick include:

• Bay of Fundy and Fundy National Park
• Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park
• Whale watching
• Grand Manan Island

Throughout our journey through New Brunswick, we stayed at Dumfries Maple Syrup Farm for the night, and it was amazing!

I’d highly recommend you take part in a similar experience in either New Brunswick or Quebec if you’re visiting in the brief maple season.

Maple season takes place between February and April, so if you’re lucky enough to visit New Brunswick or Quebec during this time, I’d highly recommend you take part in a maple syrup farm experience.

As the capital of the Quebec province, there are lots of great things to do in Quebec City .

Some of our favourites are:

• The Château Frontenac
• A trip to Montmorency Falls
• Visit the Parliament Building
• Wander around the Old Town - this 2-hour walking tour will show you all the best sites

For those with some extra time, you can always head out on a sightseeing cruise which is a fantastic way to see the city! 

If the conditions allow for it, this road trip can be extended to Prince Edward Island and Northern Quebec.

Prince Edward Island is Canada’s smallest province, and can be accessed from New Brunswick via the 12.9km Confederation Bridge.

The best thing about this tiny province is, you’re never more than 16 km away from the ocean. This means there’s some great seafood options around, giving PEI the title of ‘Canada’s Food Island’.

Northern Quebec forms the largest part of the Quebec province , stretching over 1 million square kms.

There’s incredible nature in this area, with Arctic tundra in the north where the winters are long and harsh.

3. Quebec City to Toronto

This Canada road trip took us over 800 km through the Quebec Province and into Ontario .

Quebec City lies just over 800 km from Toronto , so of course there are lots of fascinating spots to enjoy throughout this journey.

The first stop of this Canada road trip is Saguenay . 

We opted for a slightly longer route so we could stop at Montmorency Falls on the way.

Although it’s only 7.5 miles away from the city you'll want to allow a good few hours to explore here.

Fun fact: at 83m tall, the waterfalls here are 30 m higher than Niagara falls. To see some of the best views of the park and waterfalls, take the cable car .

The drive from Montmorency Falls to Saguenay will take you via the Laurentian Mountains , which is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.

Saguenay is best known for Saguenay Fjord, which leads to the St. Lawrence River. The Fjord is definitely one of the best places to visit in Quebec, with incredible scenery throughout the whole year!

Some of the other great things to do in Saguenay are:

• Visit a museum - there’s loads to choose from including the Musée du Fjord , La Pulperie de Chicoutimi , and the Musée de la Petite Maison Blanche
• Parc de la Rivière-du-Moulin - with its 35 km of maintained trails, 7.5 of which are open in the winter for walking, running or cycling
• Go back in time at the The Val-Jalbert Historic Village
• Enjoy some local food
• Skiing if you’re visiting in the winter  

The next stop, and our first big city on this Canadian road trip is Montreal. It’s definitely worth stopping here for a few days. Some people even choose to start their road trips here as there are plenty of RV rental options .

There are loads of amazing things to do in Montreal , and it’s easy to see why it’s a bucket list destination for so many.

Some of our top recommendations for Montreal include:

• Axe Throwing - definitely one of the most unique activities in the city, we did it at a place called Rage
• Food tour around Mile End
• Montreal Botanical Gardens
• Visit the Underground City - Montreal has the largest underground pedestrian network in the world.

You could always explore the city on this guided bus tour which will take you past all the best spots!

From Montreal there’s around a 2 hour drive to Ottawa. This takes us out of the Quebec province and into Ontario, and involves a slight detour from the straight route through to Toronto.

However, it’s a necessary detour to get the Canadian capital ticked off on this Quebec road trip itinerary .

Yes that’s right, neither Montreal nor Toronto are the capital of Canada! It’s Ottawa, which I’m sure is surprising for some of you to hear.

There are definitely some interesting sites and beautiful buildings to see in Ottawa, and as the Canadian capital there are of course some interesting historical and cultural sites, however you won’t need more than a day here.

Some of the best things to do in Ottawa include:

• Byward Market - one of the oldest markets in Canada , the Byward Market consists of main buildings, and open air stalls. It’s the number one tourist attraction in Ottawa. 
• Rideau Canal Skateway - this UNESCO World Heritage Site becomes the longest outdoor skating rink in the world during the winter months. It’s 8 km long and is open 24 hours a day! Make sure you enjoy a Beaver Tail whilst skating here. They are deep fried dough sweets which you can buy at kiosks along the ice rink.
• Visit some of the museums - including the Canadian Museum of History, the National Gallery of Canada , the Canadian Museum of Nature , the Canada Agriculture Museum and the Canadian War Museum
• Enjoy the nightlife - there’s a whole host of pubs, bars, lounges, nightclubs, and live jazz and blues music throughout the city. So there’s something for every kind of night owl!

There's also this fantastic river sightseeing cruise that will take you along the Ottawa River and past many of the city's iconic landmarks.

Our final stop before Toronto is the beautiful Algonquin Provincial Park . It’s Ontario’s oldest and most famous provincial park , so it must be worth a visit! This park is 7,635 sq km of maple hills forests, bogs, lakes, rivers and rocky ridges.

There are eight camping grounds to choose from at Algonquin, some of which are open all year round, as well as a wide range of biking and hiking trails , fishing opportunities, and wildlife viewing.

Some of the best and most popular hiking trails include Booth's Rock Trail , Centennial Ridges Trail , and Mizzy Lake Trail . 

In the winter , there’s great opportunities for skiing, snowshoeing and skating at the park. 

From Algonquin Provincial Park it’s around a 3 hour drive to reach our destination for this Canada road trip - Toronto!

4. Toronto to Thunder Bay

This road trip encompasses around 1,600 km of some of Canada’s most famous sites in the Ontario province.

Ontario is an amazing road trip destination, with lots of RV rental opportunities .

Your starting point, the provincial capital Toronto, is full of amazing things to do , so make sure you give yourself adequate time to enjoy this incredible city.

This city is also a great place to start a Canadian road trip as there are lots of RV rental firms in Toronto to choose from.

And better still, it’s just a road trip away from the world renowned Niagara Falls .

It really isn’t a trip to Ontario without a trip to Niagara Falls, so head south from Toronto, then cut eastwards again, and you’re at this famous beauty spot. Also stop at the town of Niagara and surrounding vineyards - it's amazing here!

If you’re planning on spending a little longer in this area, you might want to treat yourself to a night in a hotel with a view of Niagara Falls .

Or, you can just take a day trip from Toronto as there are plenty of fantastic tour options! 

Heading west from Niagara Falls sees you take in lots of the best places in Ontario . 

Manitoulin Island should be a must on this Canadian road trip. It’s a lake island found in Lake Huron, which is one of the Great Lakes of North America, and one of the largest lakes in the world. The island is best accessed by a ferry from Tobermory, which is around 300 km from Toronto.

The island is absolutely MASSIVE, and is in fact the largest freshwater island on the planet. It actually has over 100 lakes of its own!

Another interesting fact about Manitoulin Island is that it’s the first site of European settlement in Canada. The pace on this island is really slow and life is pretty laid back. With amazing scenery, and no crowds, it’s a nature lover's haven. 

The easiest and most popular way to get to Manitoulin is via the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry , with the crossing taking around 2 hours. Of course, the island is an incredible place, but the crossing alone is fantastic.

Fares can vary depending on the time of year, and the type of vehicle you are travelling with, so check their website for a fare estimate. 

Now I’ve mentioned before that Lake Huron is one of the Great Lakes of North America, but there are four more - Lake Superior, Michigan, Erie and Ontario. Lake Superior is the largest lake in the world.

The drive from Manitoulin to Thunder Bay is a long and unending road through Ontario. It’s over 1,000 km altogether, and the road runs along Lake Superior. There’s a whole lot of nothing along the route , really Winnipeg is the next major city, and that’s over 2,200 km away!

But if you want to just road trip Ontario, after crossing Manitoulin and driving along the Great Lakes, you could then cut back and take the other road all the way back eastwards. It’s more about the journey than the destination with this one.

Our big recommendation is to rent or buy a kayak and spend days at a time exploring the many national parks in this area.

Thunder Bay is the largest city in Northwestern Ontario, but it’s still not big enough to escape the untouched wilderness of this province.

Some of the best things to do in the city are:

• Thunder Bay Historical Museum
• Thunder Bay Art Gallery
• Thunder Bay Military Museum
• Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame

There’s also lots around the city for outdoor enthusiasts including Sleeping Giant Provincial Park , Kakabeka Falls and Cascades Conservation Area .

5. Winnipeg to Calgary

This Canadian road trip takes us from Winnipeg, the largest city in the Manitoba Province , across to Calgary in Alberta.

The 1,300 km route passes through the province of Saskatchewan on the way, so you can say you drove all the way across this vast state!

It's funny, most Canadians we met actually ridicule Saskatchewan for being flat and boring. I quite liked it, but it's very open and you drive for unending hours with the reward being the Rockies. 

A fun fact about Saskatchewan is that it’s home to Mac the Moose , the world’s largest moose and one of the most photographed roadside attractions in Canada.

Winnipeg is a fun city, and as the largest city in the province, there are plenty of great things to do .

Some of our favourites include:

• Shopping and dining at the Forks
• The Manitoba Museum
• Winnipeg Art Gallery

If you're not spooked easily then why not download this smartphone audio ghost tour ? Winnipeg has an interesting history when it comes to ghosts and ghouls, and it's really quite creepy! 

The large flat open plains along this route mean there are clear views of the Canadian Rockies, gradually looming larger.

Instead of just heading straight for Calgary once we reached Alberta , we headed up to Edmonton first.

There’s 300 km between Calgary and Edmonton, but it’s definitely one of the best places to visit in Alberta , so well worth adding to this Canada road trip itinerary.

In fact, there's a pretty cool way to explore the city - by Segway tour ! 

As you head southwards from Calgary you suddenly enter the prehistoric landscapes of Dinosaur Provincial Park .

This UNESCO world heritage site is well worth a visit. There’s amazing drives , trails, camping and a visitor centre to enjoy. It's as if you enter a whole new landscape!

‍ And outside of the rocky mountains, it’s the coolest part of Alberta to visit (based on our experience).

Another interesting sight south of Calgary is Head-Smashed-in-Buffalo-Jump World Heritage Site . This site showcases 6000 years of Plains Buffalo culture.

Admission costs 15 CAD, and visitors can enjoy vast landscapes, exhibits and programs, which teach visitors about the cultural significance of this cliff to the Plains People.

You could just as easily do this road trip the other way round. Starting the road trip in Alberta is a great idea as there are lots of RV rental options .

6. Rocky Mountains

The Rocky Mountains are without doubt one of the best places to visit anywhere in the world .

Covering 4,800 km, the Rocky Mountains are the longest mountain range in all of North America.

Full to the brim of turquoise lakes, mountain peaks and amazing hikes, the whole area is incredible!   But there are definitely some stand-out destinations.

A road trip through the Rocky Mountains will take in some of Canadas most beautiful places, starting in the south with Banff and heading all the way up to Jasper in the north.

There’s a 300 km drive between these two fantastic destinations, but with so much to see and do throughout this Canada road trip you’ll want to take your time to take it all in.

Banff National Park is home to some amazing lakes including Lake Louise , Lake Moraine , Emerald Lake and Two Jack Lake .

Some other must see stops as you head through Banff on this Canada road trip have to be Mount Norquay , Johnston Canyon and Sulphur Mountain , the latter you can reach via the Banff Gondola .

Banff National Park and Jasper National park are linked by the epic 232 km Icefields Parkway .

This route is a road tripper's dream, encompassing stunning views, mountain peaks, blue lakes and 100s of glaciers - including the Athabasca Glacier which you’re able to walk on!

In fact, this glacier hike is definitely one of the best things to do in Jasper and on this Rocky Mountains road trip.

The Athabasca Glacier is thought to be most visited glacier in all of North America.

Ice Walks on the Athabasca Glacier operate from the Columbia Icefield car park, and we’d really recommend you take this unique opportunity to walk on a glacier.

Depending on which way round you do your road trip, Edmonton or Calgary are 2 of your best bets to hire a camper!

Then either drop back at the original depot, or some companies allow you to pay a surcharge drop off fee.

7. Dawson Creek to Delta Junction (Alaska Highway)

There’s one road which takes you from Dawson Creek to Delta Junction , and that’s the Alaska Highway !

This 2,232 km road was constructed during World War II to contiguous America, across Canada, to Alaska .

Yes this Canada road trip ends in Alaska which is the USA, but why drive that far if you’re not going to complete the last bit?!

There are also plenty of awesome places to visit along the way so allow time for lots of stops.

When it was first completed back in 1942 it was around 2,700 km long, but it’s now over 400km shorter due to continuing reconstruction and rerouting of the highway over the years.

It was once legendary for being a rough and challenging drive, but it’s now paved the entire way.

However, there’s no denying that it’s very bumpy, and can cause a lot of damage to vehicles if you don't take it easy.

I blame this road for wrecking the fan in our van , meaning we had to ship a new one to Oregon from the UK, as well as breaking the gas regulator under our van.

But I would definitely recommend it and take it again!

Perfectly doable in a 2 wheel vehicle in my opinion.

If you’re looking for an alternative route to Alaska check out the Top of the World Highway .

This is only open for certain summer months of the year but is the only other way into Alaska by road. 

We took this highway into Alaska, and then did the final stage of the Alaska highway when leaving the state.

So yes, we did the whole Alaska highway , but in 2 different points as passing on Dawson City and our failed attempt at the dempster diverted us off it. It was a great drive!

You literally do feel like you are at the top of the world.

They had tremendous wildfires when we did it (which are perfectly normal) so much of the drive was misty.

We even got booted off one of our wild camping spots because a helicopter landed 20 metres away from us and needed to secure the area as a depot for putting out a fire in the area! We also each got a cool stamp in our passport (will include pic).

The Top of the World Highway runs 127 km from Dawson City to near Jack Wade and is open from mid May to mid October.

8. Dempster Highway

That’s our video.

We actually broke down (kind of) just 100km in and It cost us £800 to get towed back to Dawson. Luckily it was a faulty oil light and the dempster didn't actually cause any damage. But it definitely was scary and worrying!

If you break down further along the Dempster Highway then it will cost thousands to get repaired or towed out.

We're gutted that we didn't make it the whole way as plenty of people do it in vehicles much worse prepared and in poorer condition than ours, but we lost our nerve after the experience, knowing how far we still had to go to reach the bottom of Argentina.

But we managed to do one hike before the disaster, and the views were epic!

We stopped at the Tombstone Territorial Park on our first evening, and the next morning we did a hike in the park.

Even if you weren't planning on driving the full Dempster Highway, it's worth driving to this park for the views and hikes on offer, plus the road is pretty maintained up until here! 

So, how do you drive the Dempster Highway?

Thankfully, we had some friends who DID make it all the way up and back on the Dempster Highway.

The Dempster Highway is Canada’s most adventurous road trip.

This epic 735km long unpaved route connects Dawson City, Yukon, and Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Elevated to protect the permafrost below, the road travels through tundra, alongside dramatic mountains and across the Arctic Circle itself.

If it’s wilderness you’re after, the Dempster will deliver. The views are simply endless, with no signs of civilisation (besides the road) in sight.

Some days, we saw more animals than people! We spotted porcupines, ground squirrels, moose and several grizzly bears.

Most people spend two days driving the length of the Dempster to Inuvik, with the long daylight hours in summer (24 hours above the Arctic Circle!) making this feat easier than it initially sounds.

If you can, however, I’d suggest spending longer. If it rains, the elevated road becomes super slippery and sliding off into the (big) ditch is a real risk.

More time also allows you to explore more places along the route, such as beautiful Tombstone Territorial Park.

The experience doesn’t stop once you reach the end of the highway, however. Spend a day or two in Inuvik, a purpose built town on the banks of the mighty Mackenzie.

One of the best places to visit in town is the Igloo Church, which features an impressive domed ceiling.

Since 2017 it has also been possible to drive beyond Inuvik to the Inuvialuit community of Tuktoyaktuk. The extra 138km is well worth the extra effort as it offers the chance to dip your toes right in the Arctic Ocean!

Due to the isolation and lack of phone signal, Dempster Highway roadtrippers need to be self-sufficient. There are only a handful of gas stations and even fewer shops.

Crowds and traffic aren’t an issue here but you need to be prepared for what you’re getting into.

A good spare tire is absolutely essential to bring as it’s fairly common to lose a tire to the Dempster’s rocky surface. A tire repair kit and portable air compressor can be very helpful to deal with small punctures.

I’d also suggest plenty of bug repellent and bear spray!

9. Whitehorse to Vancouver (West coast of BC)

This 2,400 km drive takes us along the West Coast of British Columbia .

It’s full to the brim of unending stretches all the way to Whistler .

If you fancy stopping here on the way you could easily spend a full day in this scenic place, or wait until you’ve reached Vancouver and make a day trip to Whistler .

It’s around a 2 hour drive between the two destinations.

Some of the best things to do in Whistler include:

• Ride the longest gondola in the world - the Peak 2 Peak Gondola
• Cycle along the trails around Whistler town
• Visit the train graveyard
• Drink craft beer at Whistler Brewery

It’s a drive which takes 28 hours altogether, and we drove for 8 hours a day for 5 days straight just to get through it.

The views are incredible and it's shocking how remote some people still live .

‍ It was a strange experience being off the grid with no phone service for this long, but we saw a lot of wildlife.

As you get close south to reality, the mountainous passes winding through Whistler and other towns towards Vancouver are breathtaking.

Definitely worth spending a day or two in the area, or even skiing.

Once you reach Vancouver, allow yourself around about a week to explore and enjoy the city and its surroundings.

There are so many amazing things to do in Vancouver , so you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy it.

In fact it was recently voted the third most livable city in the world so it must be pretty good.

If you decide to do this road trip the other way around, there are plenty of great RV rental firms in Vancouver .

And plenty of great car rental firms here as well .

Some of our top recommendations for Vancouver include:

• Vancouver Harbour Town

You can also go on a whale-watching tour if you're visiting at the right time of year (typically between March-October).

Just bear in mind that’s it's a heck of a way to get to Vancouver from Whitehorse so make sure you allow yourself a good few weeks to visit all the sights.

10. Trans-Canada Highway

By far the most epic Canada road trip possible.

This monster of the road winds all the way from east to west (or vice versa) of the country. From St Johns (Newfoundland) to Victoria (British Colombia)

It covers at least 7,100 km (depending on any detours), making it one of the largest routes of its kind in the world.

Even better, the Trans-Canada Highway passes through all 10 provinces of this incredible country.

Surprisingly, Canada is actually only linked by this one major highway, sometimes splitting in two. But often just one road with one or two lanes each way.

We did most of it , but came off and rejoined at different points as it doesn’t visit all the places mentioned in this guide.

As discussed below, we also haven't been as far at Newfoundland (due to weather) so our Trans Canada road trip effectively began in Halifax.

Not to worry, we will use this as our excuse to return to this wonderful country as son as possible!

The highest point of the Trans Canada Highway is Kicking Horse Pass , at 1,627 m above sea level.

Road tripping Canada: Other common FAQs & travel tips

When is the best time of year to road trip canada.

Depending on which Canada road trip you're planning on doing, and where in the country you're travelling, the weather and conditions can vary.

As Canada is such a large country there’s plenty of scope for different weather and temperatures.

June to August are the summer months where the sunniest and warmest weather is guaranteed , however if you're planning on skiing, perhaps around Whistler, you might want to visit during some of the cooler months.

If you’re road tripping across Canada in winter, be aware that the conditions could be icy and treacherous on some of the roads, so always check before you travel.

September through to November is a great time to visit Canada.

The weather has cooled down but it’s still comfortable, and the colours are changing to stunning autumnal browns and oranges.

If you want to enjoy a maple syrup experience like we did at Dumfries Maple Farm , then you’ll need to visit in the maple season which is from February to April.

What is the great Canadian road trip?

The great Canadian road trip takes you from one side of Canada to the other, all by road.

The perfect place to start is the Mile 0 monument in Victoria, BC which marks the start of the epic Trans Canada Highway.

The route then winds the way across the country, through 10 provinces, via brilliant spots that we’ve mentioned like Lake Louise, Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, Mac the Moose, and the Original Tim Horton’s before finally reaching Iceberg Alley in Newfoundland.

Iceberg Alley is the ‘iceberg capital of the world’, and the icebergs you can see floating here are over 10,000 years old.

How long does it take to road trip across Canada?

Now Canada is the second largest country in the world , so it’s going to be a pretty long road trip! 

Driving across the entirety of Canada, from Newfoundland to the Alaska border, takes 23 days on the road, but to allow yourself time to see the sites, visit cities, enjoy National Parks and really take it all in, you’ll want at least 2-3 months to make the trip.

We spent around 4 months road tripping Canada.

We travelled over 15,000km , which included a trip to Alaska, and lots of other great places to visit .

Having this much time meant we had plenty of time to explore, and take it all in.

If you’re limited on time, we’d recommend choosing one of the Canada road trips above and really getting the most out of that, as opposed to cramming too much in.

Is the drive across Canada worth it?

ABSOLUTELY!

If this guide of the best road trips in Canada hasn’t already convinced you of this, then let me assure you that Canada is one of the best road trips we have ever been on.

Whether you’re after wildlife, mountains, nature, adventure sports, vibrant cities, historical and cultural sites or isolated remoteness Canada really does have it all.

As such a huge country, there’s so much variety on offer. It really is without doubt a bucket list destination!

Is there good service in Canada?

Short answer, no! It's notoriously spotty, especially in more remote parts like the Yukon and much of the Rocky Mountains.

Not only that, but it's also very expensive to get data packages in Canada!

Instead, we used a mobile wifi hotspot all across the country which worked out both cheaper and offered better coverage in all provinces than a single data provider could possibly offer.

And when heading west across these gorgeous countries, we found plenty of happy Canadians heading eastwards for the summer to tackle these provinces.

Accessing this region is best done in the brief warmer months as snow and ice make them inaccessible for most the year.

10 Great Lakes Road Trips You Should Take This Summer

The Great Lakes region is the perfect destination for a road trip this summer. With stunning views, charming small lakeside towns, and plenty of outdoor activities, a road trip around the Great Lakes should be at the top of your travel to-do list.

From exploring the beautiful shores of Lake Erie to visiting quaint waterfront towns in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, there are so many possibilities for a fantastic road trip around the Great Lakes.

We’re here to highlight some of our favorite routes and attractions to help you plan the ultimate Great Lakes road trip. If you’re asking for our favorites, it’s tough to narrow them down!

We’ve been road-tripping around the region for our entire lives, so we know a thing or two about where to go! However, if we had to choose, we’d probably say Michigan’s UP or Pennsylvania’s Route 6.

1. Great Lakes Circle Tour

The Great Lakes Circle Tour is a scenic road trip route that takes you around all five Great Lakes. This epic route allows you to explore all the beauty of the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world.

This is the longest route on our list, so you’ll want to save this one for when you have plenty of time to see everything.

Starting in any of the Great Lakes states, on this tour, you’ll make your way around Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior. Each lake has its unique charm and attractions, with historic lighthouses, sandy beaches, and charming little towns. You’ll even pass through larger cities including Chicago, Cleveland, and Toronto.

While the tour can be completed in a short amount of time, we wouldn’t recommend rushing along this route. It is best experienced over two weeks. 

Great stops along this route include Put-in-bay, OH; Grand Portage, MN; Sault St. Marie, ON; Toronto, ON

2. Route 66

Route 66, the Main Street of America, stretches over 2,400 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. While the entire route is full of iconic legs, traveling along the section near the Great Lakes is a great way to get a taste of a cross-country road trip.

As Route 66 winds out of busy Chicago, it ventures through the vibrant neighborhoods and urban landscapes. Heading southwest, it passes through small towns.

If you’re looking to stay relatively close within the Great Lakes region, we’d recommend stopping in St. Louis. You can save the rest of the route for another time!

At the end of your trip, make sure you stop at the famous Gateway Arch, a symbol of westward expansion. The site is now protected as a national park. You’ll also pass through Springfield, which showcases the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, honoring the nation’s 16th president.

In less than 200 miles, this section of Route 66 near the Great Lakes will give you just a small taste of the charm along this legendary route.

3. Minnesota’s North Shore

In northeastern Minnesota, the North Shore along Lake Superior is known for its breathtaking beauty. One of the best ways to experience all of the best views is by driving the North Shore Scenic Drive, about 150 miles along the rugged coastline of Lake Superior. The drive will give you views of the lake, cliffs, and great waterfalls along the way.

When road-tripping along Minnesota’s North Shore, the easiest place to begin is in Duluth. Famous for its stunning views of Lake Superior, Duluth has plenty of activities on par with mid-sized cities.

One of the most iconic landmarks along the North Shore drive is the Split Rock Lighthouse, perched high up on a cliff overlooking the lake.

You’ll also want to stop and explore the beautiful state parks with waterfalls along the way, including Gooseberry Falls, Tettegouchee, Cascade River, and Grand Portage.

We loved Gooseberry Falls and Tettegouchee, but make sure you head all the way to Grand Portage. That’s where you’ll find the tallest waterfall in Minnesota. We found the North Shore to be a great scenic route heading back after exploring Voyageurs National Park .

4. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan surprised us with its natural beauty, great hiking, and chilly dips in Lake Superior.

One of its intriguing aspects is its mysterious and haunted past, filled with stories of ghostly encounters and eerie occurrences. Ghost towns include Central Mine and Fayette, giving you a little glimpse into history.

The Upper Peninsula is also known for its shipwrecks, thanks to the treacherous waters of the Great Lakes, especially Lake Superior. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, on Whitefish Point, is a must-visit stop on this road trip. You’ll see artifacts and exhibits that recount the tales of some of the ships swallowed by the lakes. Visitors can also pay homage to the Edmund Fitzgerald, the most famous shipwreck in the Great Lakes.

Many visitors to the UP are headed to Pictured Rocks , and for good reason. It’s beautiful! We’d definitely recommend hiking the Chapel Loop , one of our favorite hikes in the entire Great Lakes region.

Another significant historical stop in the Upper Peninsula is the Keweenaw Peninsula for its mining history. Copper mining played a vital role in shaping the region. Explore historic sites such as the Copper Harbor Lighthouse and the Delaware Copper Mine.

While on the peninsula, take a ferry or seaplane over to Isle Royale National Park ! You won’t regret the detour.

As you’re headed back along the northern point of Lake Michigan, stop and stretch your legs at Kitch-iti-kipi . Check out those big fish and bright turquoise waters!

Then, end your UP road trip with a ferry ride over to Mackinac Island.

5. Milwaukee to Door County

Begin in Milwaukee and head north, ending your trip in Door County. The route through eastern Wisconsin to Door County showcases some of the best the state has to offer, but it’s just a taste!

As you approach Door County, you’ll be treated to beautiful views along the 300 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline.

Small lakeside towns with plenty of charm fill Door County. It’s a popular summer getaway destination for those looking to get out of the cities. Boat cruises and fish boils are must-dos once you reach Door County on your road trip.

Highlights of the region also include Peninsula and Newport State Park, both natural playgrounds filled with outdoor activities. Hiking trails, bike paths, boating, and fishing opportunities are plentiful. Swimming, camping, and golfing are also available. Those seeking a touch of history should check out the historic lighthouse

6. A Finger Lakes Road Trip

A road trip around the Finger Lakes in New York is a great adventure! It’s one of our favorite spots to visit around the Great Lakes because there is so much variety in what you can do. Begin the day hiking the gorge at Watkins Glen State Park spend the afternoon sipping wine with views of the water, and end the day with a delicious farm-to-table dinner.

Seneca Lake is the most visited of the Finger Lakes, but each lake has its own charm. Check out Canandaigua to get away from some of the crowds and bachelorette parties, or head to Ithaca for a taste of the Ivy League culture of Cornell’s campus .

Well-preserved architecture, boutique shops, and delightful restaurants will break up your time spent tasting wine along the routes. If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can book a driver or a wine-tasting tour.

History lovers are in luck on this road trip, too. From the Seneca Falls Historical Society to the National Women’s Hall of Fame, this area played a big role in the suffrage movement.

7. Chicago to Niagara Falls

Starting in Chicago, you can begin your road trip by checking out some of the most popular Windy City attractions. Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier, and Millennium Park are just a few of the famous landmarks worth exploring before hopping in your car and traveling toward western New York .

Leaving Chicago, your route will take you along the southern tip of Lake Michigan and Indiana Dunes National Park . Make a quick stop and climb the dunes before continuing toward Ohio

There are plenty of options for stopping along Lake Erie in Ohio, including Toledo, Put-in-Bay, Cleveland, and the wine region of northeast Ohio.

As you continue on, you’ll quickly travel through northwest Pennsylvania, and if you blink, you might miss it! We’d recommend fueling up and getting a bite to eat at one of the many great local restaurants in Erie, or checking out the beaches of Presque Isle State Park , before the last stretch in western New York.

We’ll end this one at Niagara Falls, but don’t just visit the few streets closest to the falls. There are some great trails further down the river and some fantastic restaurants off the main streets.

8. Pennsylvania’s Route 6

Pennsylvania’s Route 6, also known as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, stretches across just over 400 miles from the Ohio border in the west to the New York border in the east. This scenic drive on a 2-lane road is one of the best ways to see some of Pennsylvania’s beautiful countryside.

Take a quick detour just past Wellsboro to see stunning views of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon from either Colton Point or Leonard Harrison State Parks. The view from the Barbour Rock Trail is one of the best in Pennsylvania!

Stop in the Pennsylvania Wilds region, home to plenty of forested hiking trails. Take a quick detour south to the Elk State Forest, where you can look for Pennsylvania’s elk in the wild. They can be spotted any time of the year, but fall gives you the best chance during the rut.

We also love stopping and visiting the small towns along the way. Make sure you stop at Logyard Brewing in Kane. You won’t be disappointed!

There are so many notable stops along Route 6. At Kinzua Bridge State Park , you can walk on the Kinzua Sky Walk, a glass-floored observation deck with panoramic views of the Kinzua Gorge. The Kinzua Bridge was destroyed by a tornado through the gorge in 2003, and the twisted metal still remains at the bottom. It’s a great place to appreciate the power and force of nature.

The driving time along Route 6 can vary depending on how many stops you plan to make along the way, but on average, it takes 8-9 hours just to drive the entire route. We’d recommend planning 5-7 days to cover the entire route with ample stops at parks and attractions along the way.

9. Buffalo to the Thousand Islands

If traveling from Buffalo to the Thousand Islands, there are a few route options, but we’d recommend staying as close to Lake Ontario as possible! The drive covers about 250 miles.

Once you reach The Thousand Islands themselves, you’ve finally reached the St. Lawrence River.

Fun Fact: The St. Lawrence serves as a natural border between the United States and Canada.

You’ll start in Buffalo and head east on Interstate 90. As you pass through the cities of Rochester and Syracuse, you can opt to detour north along the lake. However, if you’re pressed for time, continue on I-90.

In the Syracuse area, you’ll take Interstate 81 North, where the surroundings slowly transition away from city views. Once you reach Watertown, you’re in the home stretch. You’re less than an hour from the Thousand Islands!

Whether you explore the islands by boat or take a stroll along the riverbanks, this is a beautiful area to explore and spend some time in. Stay in Alexandria Bay or in the village of Clayton, where you can walk to restaurants and enjoy some time by the St. Lawrence.

10. The Historic National Road

The Historic National Road holds great significance in the eastern US as the nation’s first federally funded highway. It was crucial for connecting and facilitating westward migration during the 19th century.

The road, also known as US 40, stretches 600+ miles from Cumberland, Maryland to East St. Louis, Illinois, passing through cities like Columbus and Indianapolis. Its construction began in 1811 under the guidance of then-President Thomas Jefferson and was inspired by George Washington’s vision of a transcontinental highway.

In Pennsylvania, take a short detour to Ohiopyle State Park , well-known for waterfalls and whitewater rafting. Take a glance up at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, which looks like a castle set high up on a hill overlooking the road. Then, stop for a bite to eat at Braddock’s Inn for delicious homestyle cooking.

In southern Ohio, make a stop in Zanesville. This town used to be known as the “Pottery Capital of the World!”

Through southern Indiana, you’ll pass through Indianapolis on the way to the end of the road in Vandalia, Illinois. There are so many historically significant points along this road that history buffs could spend weeks driving, stopping, and learning.

The Great Lakes region offers some great options for both quick road trip getaways and longer adventures. You’ll find beautiful and diverse landscapes, charming small towns, and historical significance along every one of these routes.

Six Fun and Unique Cross Country Road Trip Ideas

T here are literally COUNTLESS cross country road trip ideas you can imagine. There are almost an equal amount of blogs like this one listing out how to drive one of these cross country road trip ideas, or recommending the absolute best ones to take. I love a good cross country trip as much as you do. I’ve had a chance to drive some of the most iconic road trips in America, but so have a lot of other people. So, I wanted to think outside the box a bit for my next great road trip idea.

As I got my planning juices flowing and started my research, there have been a ton of great ideas. I wanted these potential trips to fulfil two qualities. First, it has to be a multi-state trip of at least 500 miles. That’s short enough for a long weekend, while still technically being a cross country trip. Second, it had to have a clear theme. I wanted them to have a roughly definable “purpose” that outlines why you might want to embark on the trip in the first place. You’ll find at the bottom of each entry an embedded map. You can use these to preview these unique road trip routes and even download the direction directly!

I’m not quite sure which of these cross country road trip routes I’m going to tackle next, but why wait to share these awesome trip ideas with you? So here are six fun and unique cross country road trip ideas I’ve planned out!

1. Great Lakes Shoreline Road Trip

This is a cross country road trip idea I’ve had bubbling in my head for years. The great coastal road trips, like the Pacific Coast Highway, get a lot of attention. However, America has an often forgotten “coast” along the Great Lakes. I wanted to design a route which offered that shoreline, coastal feel in the heart of America. This road trip clocks in at a monster 4,317 miles! That is a trunk-load and then some of driving, spread out over a whole month. Yet, the real secret of this trip is how flexible it can be.

With all the spots I have mapped out, you can do a loop of any of the great lakes in just a couple days. Lake Erie or Ontario loops can be done over a three or four day weekend. The bigger lakes like Superior, Michigan, and Huron could easily be done in a week or less. The Lake Michigan Loop in particular, has huge variety. Sandy beaches, rolling dunes, deep forests, and the urban landscape of Chicago are all included.

Those who are crazy enough, like me, to tackle the entire trip are in for a treat. The first portion of this cross country road trip idea explores the shores of Lake Superior. This is one of the best parts for outdoor lovers. Visits to Isle Royale National Park and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are highlights. Then you’ll journey through Wisconsin to the Windy City. After catching a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, you’ll get a chance to visit the lovely small towns of Michigan’s western shore.

After spending a day on Mackinac Island, it’s time to follow Michigan’s Sunrise Coast. Once you reach Detroit, the trip becomes a lot more urban. Cities like Toledo, Cleveland, Erie, and Buffalo hug the shores of Lake Erie. Make sure you stop at Niagara Falls to enjoy it’s breathtaking misty vistas. The final US portion goes along the southern shore of Lake Ontario to Sackets Harbor.

If you’ve got your passport handy, you can tack on an extension through Canada. This portion of the trip has it’s own big city, Toronto. However, after you leave Canada’s largest city, this trip is far more of a wilderness road trip. Much of it follows the Trans-Canada Highway along the northern shores of the Great Lakes. It’s a fantastic way to see huge parts of Ontario and makes for an epic final leg on your Great Lakes Shoreline road trip!

2. The Great BBQ Pilgrimage

Let’s be real: Everyone loves BBQ (no matter how you choose to spell it). I’m definitely among the BBQ faithful. What better way to celebrate your love for this delicious cuisine than taking a cross country trip to try as much of it as you can. This was one of the first cross country road trip ideas I came up with, but one of the hardest to map out. How can you narrow it down to just a few BBQ joints? I’ve done my best to collect some exemplary examples of each regional style across the country.

Each stop on this cross country trip invokes that region’s specialty. The map at the bottom shows you all the stops, but a few key ones need to be called out. Big Bob Gibson’s in Decatur, Alabama is the original home of Alabama White BBQ. You’ve got to take the chance and try it! The Moonlite Bar-b-q Inn serves up the unique mutton that makes Kentucky’s BBQ stand out as part of this road trip idea. My final call out is Goldee’s Barbecue in Texas. This has been named the #1 BBQ joint in Texas, so that’s certainly hard to pass up. It was even featured on a pretty neat YouTube documentary that you can watch below!

There will be plenty to eat as you cover over 2,700 miles on this cross country trip. With the primary purpose of this road trip idea being eating, you’re not gonna need a lot of time for other things. The trip can be done in as few as eight days for the truly hungry, or as many as twelve if you want to savor every bite. I’ve built 11 stops across seven states, though you’ll pass through a few more. However, I encourage you to find even more delicious BBQ along the way! Sometimes the most unique road trip routes are the ones that have unplanned detours!

One of the best aspects of this fun and tasty cross country trip is that it can be taken year-round. BBQ doesn’t depend on the weather to enjoy it! Of all the cross country road trip ideas I came up with, this one is definitely the most laid back. So grab a partner, choose a starting point, and get to driving (and eating)!

3. Colonial New England Loop

Over 200 years of American history can be explored if you follow this cross country road trip idea. History buffs can delight in this colorful journey. That’s especially true if you take it during the height of the fall colors in New England. One of the best parts about this loop is the ability to modify it to your heart’s content. If you visited every site on this list, it would cover 1,000 miles across every state in New England. That doesn’t make it the longest trip on this list of cross country road trip ideas, but it’s still pretty sizeable. It also is very flexible with the number of days you need to spend. You could spend as few as seven days or as many as 20!

The reason for so much flexibility in this trip is that you can prioritize what you want to see. A quick loop might encompass a single day in Boston followed by drives to the other major towns. Lengthening the trip is as easy as settling down in one area for a few more days. This is how I’d recommend the trip be done. Enjoying and exploring the history of not only the places I’ve included on this list but the hidden or forgotten ones along the way. Not to mention that there are literally hundreds of great historical sites with no colonial connections at all you can visit along the way.

Many of the places you’ll find on this list won’t take much time to see. However, they do tell a collective story of our nation. There is a rich and complicated history built into the very fabric of the land. I think it’s important to spend time understanding how such an influential part of our nation’s history came to be. Doing that through exploring historic homes, cities, and battlefields helps us create a connection to a time we often idealize but fail to understand.

4. Big Sky Adventure

For those who love a good open road, it’ll be hard to beat the Big Sky Adventure. This cross country road trip idea takes you through America’s Big Sky Country. You’ll be venturing across four states (S. Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho) while visiting iconic sites of America’s western frontier. Be prepared for winding roads, long empty stretches, and hundreds of scenic views. I’d recommend between 11-14 days to cover the 1,739 miles of this journey.

It all begins in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This picturesque town gives access to many points east for major travelers. Leaving Sioux Falls you’ll head to the southwestern part of the state. Southwestern South Dakota is an underappreciated part of the country. While many people know the famous sites, such as the Badlands or Mount Rushmore, these areas don’t get the same visitation numbers as many similar places across the country. This is good for you because it means your trip won’t be too crowded.

The Badlands are truly a sight to behold and one of the most stunning locations out of all these unique road trip routes

From here you’ll head west into Wyoming towards Bighorn National Forest. Hiking and outdoors enthusiasts might want to spend an extra day or so exploring the rugged expanse of this forest. For the less adventurous, you’ll make your way to another famous western site. The Battle of Little Bighorn has become an iconic part of the American mythos. Like many stories from the American frontier days, what is fact and what is fiction can be hard to separate so it’s great to learn the truth where it all happened.

The adventure continues across the Montana cities of Billings and Bozeman. It’s also easy to find the “headwaters” of the Missouri River, so don’t pass up that chance outside Bozeman. At this point, it’s time to visit the Granddaddy of them all, Yellowstone. What can really extend the time needed for this trip is how long you plan on staying in Yellowstone. For those who have never been and want to explore, you’ll need at least three or four days. Don’t shortchange yourself here. Yellowstone is all it’s hyped up to be and more for those willing to put in some effort away from the crowds.

After Yellowstone, this iconic cross country road trip idea will be coming to its close. Parks like Grand Teton and Craters of the Moon are amazing in their own rights. That’s especially true in the Fall, as Grand Teton is one of the be st fall national parks

The tail end of this trip features a stop at the impressive Snake River Canyon outside Twin Falls. This is the spot of Evel Kineval’s final jump, just don’t try it yourself. Finally, you’ll come to an end in Boise, Idaho. Much like the start in Sioux Falls, Boise is an excellent gateway to many more sites to the west. Boise serves as the end of Big Sky Country, so it’s a fitting end to your Big Sky Adventure!

5. Civil War Battlefield Route

I wanted to come up with a road trip idea that was perfect for history buffs of all kinds. The American Civil War is a defining period of our nation’s history. A road trip to visit these sites can be both a memorable and educational experience. It’s also a fantastic way to experience a part of the country often overlooked for road trips. Many of the sites I’ve included are also among A merica’s best national battlefields .

I’ve included both a main route and a potential alternative route you can follow. The main route covers 1,329 miles and needs a minimum of eight days. The alternate route takes a more southern approach. You’ll drive over 1,758 miles, which means you’ll need about ten to eleven days for it. I prefer the main, northern path better, but it does miss out on Fort Sumter where it all really began.

You’ll find a bunch of monuments like this one in Vicksburg on this cross country trip!

One of the best parts of this trip is how it connects two points in time. The ending points of the journey both involve battles that culminated the first week of July 1863. The Siege of Vicksburg was a pivotal point in the Western Theater. Right as it was ending, the Battle of Gettysburg was raging in Pennsylvania. The fact that these two battles occurred at the same time and with the fate of a country at stake is a quirk of history. By making this trip you can connect these two points, and the men who fought at these sites, on a journey into the past.

Both of the routes will allow you to visit critical moments during the war. This includes the numerous battles fought across Virginia. This state was the major battleground during the war. The alternate route rejoins the main road trip at Appomattox Courthouse. Robert E. Lee surrendered his army, bringing an end to the war at this location. It’s fitting then that its serves as a “midway” point of sorts. Grant’s victory at Vicksburg and Lee’s defeat at Gettysburg would ultimately bring them together at Appomattox.

No matter which direction you choose to travel, you’ll be impacted by this road trip. Exploring America through it’s complicated and troubled past is a great way to gain understanding we need to make a better future. I can say from experience, visiting these hallowed grounds is a humbling moment and one that I hope you’ll experience for yourself. It’s definitely one of the more unique road trip routes I could come up with.

6. The Four Corners Loop

This cross country road trip idea is a giant, looping, journey across the American Southwest. It’s also one of the best national park road trips you could plan as well. You’ll visit four states (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah) as your cruise across the highways of the southwest. It also features stops at eleven different national parks and even a few national monuments as well. This massive loop covers over 3,026 miles. Any trip that follows the directions will take a bare minimum of two weeks. I’d recommend taking more like twenty-four days to one month if you want to spend any time hiking or enjoying more than one day at a location.

The Four Corners Loop can start in one of three major cities. Denver, Phoenix, and Albuquerque are all big stops on the way. If you live near one of these cities then you’re all set. Those having to fly in can pick whichever one offers the best airfare. Once you’ve picked your starting point, it’s time to choose the direction. This loop can be driven either clockwise or counterclockwise. The biggest suggestion I have is heading in the direction that has the places you most want to see. For instance, I’d start in Denver and drive counterclockwise. This gets you to the Mighty Five in Utah quickly and gives options for ways to make worthwhile detours if you’re inclined.

Of course, no Four Corners Loop road trip is complete without a visit to the Four Corners monument. The Monument is pretty out of the way for most of the trip. As part of the loop, I’ve placed it between a visit to Santa Fe, NM and Mesa Verde. This is the best point on the trip because you will get to see the, frankly lackluster monument and then visit one of the most historic and culturally important sites in America.

There are plenty of highlights on this road trip. Part of the reason I put it at the end of this list is because there is simply so much to see. I’ve spent time visiting the Mighty Five in Utah, so parks like Arches and Canyonlands are major highlights to me. Rocky Mountain National Park might be one of the most beautiful parks in America. The drive through Grand Staircase might be one of the most hair-raising on the entire list. The entire trip courses through some of the most iconic American scenery, which makes it one of the best cross country road trip ideas.
