Sunshine Coast Hinterland National Parks and Guided Tours

With lush green rainforest, picture perfect waterfalls, crystal clear rock pools to swim in, and national parks packed full of wildlife, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is a nature lovers’ paradise.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland National Parks

Forest bathing. It's a thing. The practice originated in Japan where it is called "shinrin-yoku" and is embraced by those seeking to de-stress by connecting with the naturally rejuvenating power of nature. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland has a myriad of places for 'forest bathing' - and the bushland areas are packed full of idyllic scenic spots to relax and enjoy a picnic.

Glass House Mountains National Park

The  Glass House Mountains  were named by Captain Cook as he mapped the Queensland coast in 1770. The “Glass Houses” are distinctive volcanic plugs that rise abruptly from the surrounding countryside. These 20 million year-old monoliths are part of the Aboriginal ‘songlines’ navigational landmarks once used by Aborigines to find their way and are a prominent feature of local Aboriginal legend. Let the awe-inspiring landscape wash over you as you take a leisurely drive through the  Glass House Mountains National Park , stopping at picturesque lookouts along the way, or get your blood pumping with some hiking, rock climbing or abseiling on an adventure tour with the team from Experientia. Make some time to visit the Glass House Mountains Lookout where you'll enjoy panoramic views of the mountains as they tower over a scenic patchwork of national parks, plantations and cultivated farmland. Kondalilla National Park

A refuge for many species of native animals and plants,  Kondalilla National Park  is a magnet for birdwatchers and nature photographers as well as bushwalkers. With a stunning waterfall that drops 90 metres into a rainforest valley, rocky pools and freshwater creeks - is it clear why the park gets its name from an Aboriginal word meaning 'rushing waters'. Five rare and threatened frog species - as well as the Bopple Nut, a rare macadamia species - can be found in the park. There is a wonderful day-use area which is ideal for picnics and can be reached on an easy 1.7 kilometre circuit track. For more of a challenge, tackle the 300 stairs on the 4.6 kilometre  Kondalilla Falls Circuit  or explore the Kondalilla leg of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk which winds its way through this park on the way to Lake Baroon, Mapleton and Gheerulla. Conondale National Park

Conondale National Park  forms the heart of an extensive area of unspoilt mountain scenery in the Conondale Range. With magnificent forests, deep gorges and spectacular views, this park and the adjacent state forest offer scenic drives, picnic areas and a choice of four grassy camp sites that sit alongside native rainforests and cool mountain streams. Walks range from a short stroll beside crystal clear creeks, to challenging hikes including to a hike to the Mount Allan fire tower or a trek along the four-day 56 kilometre Conondale Range Great Walk. It is a picturesque and ecologically important area, protecting the habitats of many rare and threatened animals, including several species of frogs and the seldom-seen Yellow-Bellied Glider. Access is via gravel roads suitable for conventional vehicles with care. In wet weather, roads may be closed. The scenic drive that starts on Booloumba Creek Road and travels through the Kenilworth Forest Reserve, has several creek crossings that are only accessible by high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. Allow at least 90 minutes for the scenic drive and extra time for picnics and bushwalks. Birdwatchers will enjoy Little Yabba Creek, while mountain bike and horse riders can explore the park and forest along vehicle tracks. And for the real adventurers, take the Booloumba Creek turn-off and head to Booloumba Falls for a swim in the hidden rock pools. Conondale National Park Conondale, 4552 Free Call: +61 13 74 68

Mapleton Falls National Park

Mapleton Falls National Park  marks the point just west of  Mapleton  where Pencil Creek spectacularly cascades 120 metres over an escarpment into the rock pools below. This small, day-use-only park shelters many bird species, including the Peregrine Falcon, Eastern Whipbird and Wompoo Fruit Dove. From the carpark, enjoy a short walk to Mapleton Falls Lookout which has wheelchair access. This viewing platform, high above the Obi Obi Gorge and  Mary River Valley , takes in endless views of luxuriant green rainforests, piccabeen groves and the very top of Mapleton Falls. Look for Peregrine Falcons soaring above - in early spring they roost on the edges of the falls. From the open, grassy picnic area, the Wompoo Circuit winds through eucalypts and rainforest. Listen for the Fruit Dove’s booming calls, 'wallock-a-woo' and 'book-a-roo'. Near the causeway pool, listen for frogs and marvel at the distinctive hexagonal volcanic rocks.

What’s a Hinterland?

What’s a Hinterland? Well, to Wiki and the educated world “ Hinterland ” means: the land beyond the known port city, the unexplored rural country or a person’s vast knowledge that is unlimited by parochialism and short sightedness.

To us it means: Stop wasting your life drinking the same corporately-diluted beer and challenge your palate to a brew that has a rich heritage, a bold passion and a story that will make you way more exciting to others. The same philosophy lives in our kitchen where we push ourselves to experiment with interesting combinations of perfectly paired flavors– each one designed to inspire our guests.

Glass of beer with tap heads in background

Our Journey

My wife Michelle and I started Hinterland in an old cheese factory just outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin (my home town) with nothing more than our own limited funds, sweat, passion and insanity. It was 1995, and we were 24 year old college grads grinding out corporate jobs and dreaming of doing something that people actually appreciated. While trying to discover the meaning of life, I poured most of my effort into music and tried to land a record deal while playing with the band Lucky in San Francisco. Our coast to coast travels in my VW Bus, twists and turns landed me a gig as editor for  Beer, The Magazine  where I just got hooked into the beer-making world. It was this explorative journey to find our own Hinterland that gave the brewery its name and its mission.

hinterland tours

In 1995, after I nearly burned down the brewery (not kidding), we decided to expand and renovate a turn-of-the-century Green Bay meat-packing warehouse into a production house—and a restaurant featuring farm-to-table culinary experiences.

Now twenty years later, Michelle and I still lead the spirit of Hinterland through a passionate and talented staff. Along the way, we’ve launched three restaurants because we believe in great ingredients and great tasting experiences. At the end of the day, we really enjoy hanging out with friends talking about killer beers and exceptional food.

We are more than excited to invite guests to experience our latest restaurant, located across the street from Lambeau Field in Green Bay’s Titletown District. This new location takes the pioneering, Hinterland philosophy to a whole new level. Come visit us and I’m sure you’ll agree.

Are the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, Australia worth visiting?

James Boettcher, founder of FNQ Nature Tours, gives you the best tips to enjoy your Atherton Tablelands trip. Photo / FNQ Nature Tours 1

FNQ Nature Tours offers small group tours across the Daintree National Park, Atherton Tablelands and beyond. Here James Boettcher, the company’s founder, shares his top tips for making the most of Atherton Tablelands.

Inspired by the rich natural beauty of Australia , I began guiding multi-day safari tours when I was 21 years old. More recently, I established FNQ Nature Tours in 2016. It was the beginning of a dream, creating unforgettable and life-changing connections with the natural world and inspiring the preservation and support of native flora and fauna through responsible eco-tourism.

Read more: Australia’s ultimate travel guide: Unmissable spots in every Australian state

I now manage a team of three incredible naturist guides , who use their local knowledge to tailor some of the most exciting wildlife encounters available in our region. As a young company with a motivated team, we are highly focused on influencing how people travel. Along with our partners in the Australian Wildlife Journeys Collective, I am confident our range of touring products will continue to benefit the region’s ecology.

Why visit the Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tablelands is a rainforest hinterland that blankets the mountains west of Cairns, a region encompassing a stark contrast of experiences. The Tablelands offer an abundance of wilderness, wildlife and culture, along with locally farmed/grown food and wine.

The Atherton Tablelands are easily my personal favourite region of the Wet Tropics. A convenient 60-minute drive from Cairns, there is something for everyone, from vast crater lakes to incredible forest giants, endemic wildlife around every corner and waterfalls galore. Heading up into the mountains to the west away from the coast, you immediately feel you’ve stumbled onto a secret.

Visit the majestic Millaa Millaa Falls at Atherton Tablelands. Photo / Tourism Tropical North Queensland

Best things to see and do

You haven’t experienced the Atherton Tablelands until you’ve sat on the lakeside timber deck of the Lake Barrine Tea House enjoying fresh, warm, locally made tea and scones. The nearby Rainforest Walk only serves to complement the Tea House, with ancient rainforest trees up to 1000 years old. Keep an eye out for Victoria’s Riflebird of Paradise, too.

For lunch, I would pop into the Malanda Collective Café, located in the Malanda township. This cute boutique family business offers a beautiful selection of homemade produce, very well catered to those who like to “do it like the locals do”. Customers are often welcomed by owner Lucia, who will go above and beyond to ensure your comfort. The coffee is excellent, and you’ll be surrounded by local knick-knacks. Checkout the wildlife calendars by local wildlife photographer Matt Cornish, a dead giveaway that wild tree kangaroos can be spotted on the nearby walking trails.

Meet the country's national animal hanging out on a Lumholtz tree. Photo / FNQ Nature Tours 1

Seeing the region’s endemic wildlife is always a big highlight of any trip to Atherton Tablelands. The one that sticks out the most for me would be spotting a platypus in the wild. If you’re not choosing a guided tour, you should. But if not, visitors can try their luck at Peterson Creek in Yungaburra.

Another “must do” I would highlight for an Atherton Tablelands day out would be the Curtin Fig Tree. Only a five-minute drive from the historic town of Yungaburra, it’s an explosion of nature with an intricate life story. Photographers, bring your wide-angle lens.

If you want to experience the region’s delicious local produce, is a short drive from the infamous Millaa Millaa Falls. The only Biodynamic Farmhouse Cheesery and Café in North Queensland. All the products are made on site and with a backdrop of Queensland’s highest peak, it’s hard to pass up.

Nature photographers should add the Curtain Fig Tree to their dream photo destinations. Photo / TTNQ 2

Where to stay

When it comes to local accommodation, there are plenty of holiday cottages, rainforest lodges and boutique motels to choose from on the Atherton Tablelands.

My wife and I eloped at The Canopy Rainforest Treehouses & Wildlife Sanctuary near the town of Tarzali, just a 10-minute drive from Malanda. You might be greeted by Dan, the warm and humble caretaker. Dan has a customer service standard like no other, and the lodges have both resident cassowaries and tree kangaroos.

I can highly recommend Chambers Wildlife Lodge near Lake Eacham for wildlife enthusiasts. You’ll see catbirds and pademelons from your balcony. See Meg at Eden House Retreat or Gina at Blue Summit Lodge in Yungaburra for super clean and tiny lodges, central to all the Tableland action.

Top tips for visiting

  • Not all walks within the national parks have rubbish collection. Plan to take your rubbish with you on your visit, or take it into one of the nearby towns such as Atherton, Malanda or Yungaburra.
  • Being so close to Cairns, some of the Tablelands’ highlights can be done in half a day, such as Yungaburra and Lake Barrine. This could be combined with a flight in or out of Cairns.
  • The beautiful and well-known Lake Barrine Tea House was once the sight of a convalescent camp during World War II. In 1943 the guesthouse at Lake Barrine was taken over by a detachment of the 2/1 Australian Army Convalescent Depot. Jump on one of the lake cruises operated by Steve Curry, third-generation owner of the Tea House and hear about the family history.
  • Easily the most underrated place to visit on the Atherton Tablelands is the Tolga Bat Hospital. Located 10 minutes from Atherton, this incredible bat hospital is run by Jenny Mclean.
  • The Tablelands area is very family-friendly, with short driving times, engaging nature, huge open playgrounds and kid-friendly restaurants. You can go nocturnal kayaking in Lake Tinaroo with Uncle Brian’s Tours, and explore the European history at Herberton Historic Village or one of many botanical walks. Malanda Falls is another close waterfall for families with nearby food and facilities.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Orville Peck’s ‘Stampede’ Tour: Here’s Where to Buy Tickets Online Before They Sell Out

By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Grab your hats and slip on your boots — country star Orville Peck ‘s Stampede Tour is right around the corner. Kicking off on May 28, Peck will embark on a 40-plus-date trek across North America, including stops in Asheville, North Carolina, the Hinterland Music Festival in Iowa, and wrapping with back-to-back Brooklyn Paramount shows with Nikki Lane and Vincent Neil Emerson in October.

“I took a break from last year to focus on myself and even though it was a difficult decision at the time, I’m so happy I did,” Peck previously told Rolling Stone when announcing the Stampede trek. “I feel healthier and happier than I’ve ever felt in my life and I cannot wait to get back on the road.”

After announcing the tour, Peck teamed up with country icon Willie Nelson for the track “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other.” “It was his initial idea for us to do the song together and I will forever be grateful for his support,” Peck said. “As an artist who has sometimes felt excluded from the Country music industry, once Willie Nelson wants to work with you, there’s really nothing the country world can say after that.”

That’s not the only duet fans can expect from the star. Peck shared on Instagram that the first volume of his upcoming new album Stampede would also feature songs with Elton John, Noah Cyrus, Midland, Allison Russell, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Bu Cuaron, though fans will still have to wait for an official release date for now.

Until then, here’s where to score tickets to Peck’s upcoming tour dates online (even if they sell out).

Where to Buy Orville Peck Tickets Online

Fans can find Stampede Tour tickets on Peck’s official website . Tickets are sold across a variety of platforms — here’s how to make sure you secure a stub before shows sell out.

Buy Orville Peck Tickets on Ticketmaster

Tickets for the Stampede trek officially went on sale earlier this month, and general admission tickets are still available for most of the dates on Ticketmaster . Fans can find both standard tickets and verified resale tickets, depending on the show, on the website at a variety of price points. Keep in mind that resale passes sometimes cost higher than face value, so it’s a good idea to price check between sites before breaking out your wallet.

Buy Orville Peck Tickets on StubHub

If tickets sell out in your area, you can always try looking for resale stubs on sites like StubHub . The site currently has tickets available to purchase for Peck’s upcoming tour dates, with prices ranging from about $57 for the opening night in Asheville, to $146 each for the sold-out date in Sante Fe. We recommend checking Peck’s website to compare prices of tickets for each date and venue.

Buy Orville Peck Tickets on Vivid Seats

Still looking for affordable tickets to see Peck on the road? You might consider looking at Vivid Seats , which currently has Stampede tickets on sale. We have previously purchased tickets through Vivid Seats for concerts, and it’s easy to get verified resale tickets sent straight to your email or through the app. Bonus: Shoppers can use the exclusive promo code RS2024 to take $20 off their first ticket purchases over $200 at checkout. At the time of this writing, fans can score tickets for the opening night for around $56 a piece (thought that doesn’t include fees).

Zach Bryan dedicates song to Caitlin Clark, thanks Des Moines in Wells Fargo Arena concert

hinterland tours

Hey Iowa concertgoers, Zach Bryan hopes you don’t hate his song.

No, it’s not brand new. In fact, it’s one of his earlier songs called “Condemned.”

Well, the crowd sang it alongside Bryan, so it’s probably safe to assume they like it.

Bryan mentioned that before several songs throughout his show in Des Moines on April 25, an entirely unnecessary line when you consider he’s a Grammy winner, an Academy of Country Music Awards winner and a musician who has two back-to-back shows at the Wells Fargo Arena that kicked off Thursday night.

Donning an Iowa Hawkeyes Athletics T-shirt throughout the entire night, Bryan performed songs “East Side of Sorrow,” “Fifth of May,” “Overtime,” “Burn, Burn, Burn,” “Hey Driver” and “Heading South.”

It’s the latter that prompted Bryan to tell the crowd how the song changed his life.

“I’m just surprised it changed my life forever,” he said, adding, “Thank you guys in Des Moines, Iowa, for making our dreams come true.”

Bryan, who headlined at the Hinterland Music Festival last year, performed in Iowa as part of “The Quittin' Time Tour.”

Here are three memorable moments from the night in case you missed the show, or want to relive it.

Caitlin Clark collects another shoutout, this time from Zach Bryan

Caitlin Clark, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft and the face of college basketball, once again was given some attention during a Wells Fargo Arena concert.

“This one’s for Caitlin Clark,” Bryan called out before launching into “Revival” as part of the encore performance.

Lil Wayne called the athlete “dope” at his Wells Fargo Arena concert earlier in April and country star Tim McGraw wore a Clark jersey during his concert at the arena in March.

‘You guys got me?’ Zach Bryan offers storytelling and lots of singing at Des Moines, Iowa concert

That’s what Bryan asked the crowd several times throughout the night, prompting his fans to sing especially loud and clear during songs “Dawns” and “I Remember Everything,” the latter of which featured Kacey Musgraves and went No.1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

“I don’t deserve any of you,” Bryan said after the song. “Thank you, guys, so much.”

Bryan returned the energy the crowd gave all night and shared tidbits about several songs.

That included for “28,” the age he turned earlier this month. He described how he realized how lucky he was to be in his friends' presence while they went out bowling, and how grateful he was to be performing Thursday night.

Bryan also shared how it was his girlfriend’s suggestion to have actor Matthew McConaughey star in his music video, “Nine Ball,” which was nominated for Video of the Year for the CMT Music Awards earlier this year.

“I was like, ‘You’re crazy. No way in hell that’s ever going to happen,’” Bryan recounted before doing an impression of McConaughey’s iconic response.

“Alright, alright, alright.”

There’s no “Quittin' Time” at a Zach Bryan concert

Bryan and the band exited after “Quittin' Time,” the last song of the night before the encore. But the audience wasn't ready to let the country musician be finished for the night, and it was clear he wasn't done either.

Bryan and the band launched into about 10 minutes of theatrics throughout the encore performance of “Revival.” That included a banjo player pretending to faint and returning to consciousness with a solo, beer — presumably — being splashed on stage and crew members launching what appeared to be merchandise into the crowd.

Who opened for Zach Bryan at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa?

Opening for the Bryan was Levi Turner, the country singer signed to Bryan’s label imprint, Belting Bronco Records, according to music publication Holler .

Following Turner was the Middle East, the Australian indie band whose performance in Des Moines is especially notable. That’s because their opening for Bryan on his tour is part of the indie band’s first shows outside Australia in 14 years, the Music reported .
