The Real Chrisparkle

Review – julian clary: a fistful of clary, royal and derngate, northampton, 17th april 2024.

A Fistful of Clary

On the whole (and there’s the first of my Claryesque double entendres ), yes . A Fistful of Clary sees Julian reimagining himself as a western hero (that’s Wyoming, not Cornwall), so that’s a cue for some spangly cowboy outfits and a backdrop that includes the most phallic cactus you’ve ever seen. Apart from that, the first half is typical Clary, bouncing brilliantly off the audience, gently insulting them to the rafters, ridiculing his assistant, Bertha the lesbian, but it’s all very playful and hilarious. He tells us about his escapades performing on a cruise ship to a bunch of well-meaning geriatrics and fills us in (there’s another) with some amusing reminiscences regarding his appearances in TV’s Taskmaster and The Masked Singer , as well as on stage in Jesus Christ Superstar and Cabaret .

Julian Clary

The second half returns to the Wild West theme with what feels like a gameshow lifted straight out of his old Sticky Moments programme – or indeed, before that, Bruce Forsyth’s Generation Game when the self-styled Balls Pond Road Theatre Club would enact their little plays in which the contestants could humiliate themselves. Six willing-ish gentlemen of all shapes and sizes plucked from the audience joined him on stage, four of whom ended up donning costumes and acting out a modest little tale which culminated in a Western Showdown between Julian and Peter, who works at Barclays, in the role of Bad Norm Lamont. This takes up nearly all the second half, and is – in its highlights – extremely funny, but at other moments feels like treading water. It very much depends on how willing the victims, I mean volunteers, are.

Julian Clary

Is his humour evolving? Perhaps not as much as it should; however, I wasn’t expecting the show to end with a very post-ironic number with the refrain It’s Not Cool to be a Queer , which even name-checks Brianna Ghey, a song that stuns us into a sad silence that not even the arrival of glitter falling from heaven can quite restore. All in all, it’s an unusual evening’s entertainment, not without hilarity and skill, but I’m wondering how much longer this much-loved comedian can make this level of content last.

Julian Clary to head out on Wild West themed 2024 tour

Tuesday 4th July 2023, 10:54am

  • A Fistful of Clary will tour from April to June 2024
  • The show has a Wild West theme. He says: "It was only a matter of time before I eased myself into some chaps"

" Julian Clary , renowned homosexual and national trinket, is fixing to saddle up and head on out for a brand-new 2024 UK tour, titled A Fistful of Clary . The revered comic - who was also recently confirmed to be joining the next line-up of Channel 4 's Taskmaster - will play 45 shows across the UK, from 10th April - 14th June 2024 , stopping off for two nights at his spiritual pantomime home, the London Palladium (18th & 19th May).

"Yee-haw! You've heard of The Man With No Name? Well, here's The Man With No Shame...

"'Yes, it has a Western theme', the old buckaroo Clary confirms, sipping Bourbon from a pint tankard. 'It was only a matter of time before I eased myself into some chaps', he adds, dabbing his temples with a damp flannel.

"Julian is sure that the men in the audience will be so eager to join his posse they won't be able to keep their hands off his Rawhide. The lucky few will play with him on stage in the Hang 'em Low saloon, where Wild Bill Hickok used to meet his special friend, Raving Clarence la Fruit . But life in the Old West was tough. Not all of Julian's wild bunch will be around to witness the final shoot-out that will result in Julian giving himself selflessly at high noon to the last man standing. Who knows what else he'll do for a few dollars more?

"'A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do...' drawls Julian cryptically before becoming engrossed in his embroidery."

Julian Clary announces a 2024 tour

The Western-themed A Fistful Of Clary

Julian Clary has announced a major tour for 2024.

The comic – who was recently revealed as part of the next series line-up for Channel 4’s Taskmaster – will play 45 shows across the UK from April 10 to June 14.

It includes two nights at the London Palladium, where he will again be appearing in pantomime – for the eighth consecutive time – this year playing Seaman Smee in Peter Pan alongside Jennifer Saunders .

His new tour is called A Fistful Of Clary and has a Wild West theme, with the ‘renowned homosexual’ billed as  ‘The Man With No Shame’.

‘Yes, it has a Western theme,’ Clary  says: ‘It was only a matter of time before I eased myself into some chaps.’

And the official blurb for the show is full of the innuendo fans would expect, reading: ‘Julian is sure that the men in the audience will be so eager to join his posse they won’t be able to keep their hands off his Rawhide. The lucky few will play with him on stage in the Hang ‘em Low saloon, where Wild Bill Hickok used to meet his special friend, Raving Clarence la Fruit. But life in the Old West was tough. Not all of Julian’s wild bunch will be around to witness the final shoot-out that will result in Julian giving himself selflessly at high noon to the last man standing. Who knows what else he’ll do for a few dollars more?’

Clary will appear on the 16th series of  Taskmaster. alongside Lucy Beaumont, Sam Campbell, Sue Perkins and Susan Wokoma.

He will also be playing Herod in a UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, this autumn, performing in Manchester, Newcastle, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Liverpool.

Comedy Review : Julian Clary

Julian Clary, renowned homosexual and national trinket, slips into some chaps at the Nottingham Playhouse...

Julianc 1

During the interval, two chaps were overheard speaking about the first half. ‘Are you enjoying it?’ ‘Yeah, he’s brilliant’ responded his friend. Whilst standing in the queue for the gents, (which was considerably longer than the ladies), I pondered on that conversation. It seemed that the second guy would have been nervous about attending a Julian Clary production. And rightly so. Nobody was safe. Using a general theme of 'the wild west', throughout the show, Julian blended his enigmatic stage presence with a sensitivity towards and connectivity with the audience.

A full house at The Nottingham Playhouse were treated to a journey of innuendo, subtle nuance and for the non-puritans downright crudity. There were some tremendous reworkings of classic songs, which while maintaining the expected musical elements included lyrics that were hilarious. A couple of original songs were added into the mix and in particular the finale provided a thought provoking 'climax'. Bertha, Julian's assistant, provided fantastic 'straight' support throughout. Working as a team, they made even the glitches in production seem just as 'real'.

so much can be achieved with so little

Use of a simple set and a limited range of props, particularly during the second half, showed that so much can be achieved with so little. Julian's garments were outlandish and totally (in)appropriate. Those that were fortunate, (or unfortunate), to take part in the second half 'farcical play' were so game and well appreciated by the audience. A touching element was added when Julian paid tribute to his dear friend Paul O'Grady (Lillian Savage).

It should also be noted that The Nottingham Playhouse staff were once again first class. Julian's ability to work seamlessly between prepared material and 'in the moment reactions' surely marks him out as one of the best entertainers of our times. His tour continues throughout the UK, concluding in Brighton on June 14 th . This show is not for the fainthearted. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Julian Clary's A Fistful of Clary played at the Nottingham Playhouse on Saturday 27th April 2024.

STAGE DOOR JOE

#keepitstagey, julian clary: a fistful of clary – review.

When Julian Clary walks on to the Assembly Hall Theatre stage in Tunbridge Wells dressed extravagantly in a brightly coloured, custom made Wild West costume, complete with cleverly placed large buffalo horns, you already know what sort of a night you’re in for. In fact, just upon entering the theatre, the backdrop of a phallic looking cactus and glitter clad microphone stand might well give it away too.

Clary really is the master of camp and his new show ‘A Fistful of Clary’ is exactly what the audience expect and want. It’s an array of smutty comedy tied together with heaps of audience participation and a few touching & sincere moments thrown in too.

There is no support act so Clary glides majestically on to the stage, taking his applause and unleashing his razor sharp wit straightaway. He gives his frank judgement on many audience members fashion and releases hilarious insults at lightning pace. “You’ve had your roots died brown”, one poor female spectator is told whilst a frizzy haired lady is asked if she had been plugged into the National Grid.

The first act is a 50 minute stand up set complete with silly songs and anecdotes & Clary’s experience and confidence is a joy to watch. He can turn the packed auditorium from belly laughing tears of joy to thought-provoking moments of reflection and sadness, especially with a fitting tribute to his late, good friend Paul O’Grady. There’s a hysterical closing of the act song regarding knobs of butter too which is a true masterpiece, delivered in Clary’s typically lightly-spoken, slightly tuneless, manner.

There’s a modest Wild West theme throughout and Act 2 sees members of the audience chosen at random to take part in a brand new cowboy movie, obviously written by Julian himself. He weaves in and out of the audience selecting unwilling members to dress up and play lavish characters in his own camp production. It’s joyful to watch and Clary handles the chosen candidates with ease, masterfully holding it all together.

The evening is brought to a close with a heartfelt song saying simply ‘It’s OK To Be Gay’. Genuine and from the heart, Clary nails it truthfully and respectfully.

It’s only the fourth date of the tour so moments will get slicker, the first act Clary still referring to notes fixed on the stage, but it’s a triumphant piece from a true showman and unique master of his craft. Long may he continue!

When tickets went on sale, there was a moment when 90,000 people were in the queue, waiting their turn to book seats.

“That’s bigger than any 02 concert and bigger than any other West End show,” boasted Michael Harrison, who directs and writes the Palladium theatrics in collaboration with Clary.

julian clary tour 2024

This year’s show, produced by Crossroads Pantomimes, of which Harrison is chief executive and David Ian is chairman, presents a cast of regulars and newcomers.

Returning are Paul Zerdin ( Muppet Treasure Island ) and Nigel Havers ( Chariots of Fire ), this year playing Will Scarlet and Friar Tuck.

Marisha Wallace, who appeared in Guy Ritchie’s  Aladdin , was an Olivier award nominee for her Adelaide in Nicholas Hytner’s glorious revival of  Guys & Dolls  at the Bridge Theatre. She makes her panto bow as the show’s baddie, the Sheriff of Nottingham. West End audiences were introduced to her when she played Effie in  Dreamgirls  at the Savoy Theatre.

Comic artist Rob Madge ( My Son’s A Queer ( But What Can You Do? ), no stranger to pantomime antics at the Palladium, returns as the Spirit of Sherwood.

Tosh Wanogho-Maud, standing tall at over six foot, debuts as Little John. I’ve been a fan of Wanogho-Maud’s ever since I spotted him as Young Simba in  The Lion King , which is still playing to strong houses at the Lyceum. More recently, the actor wowed as Ben E. King and Rudy Lewis in  The Drifters Girl,  which starred Beverley Knight .

julian clary tour 2024

Harrison told me that he wanted to have a year where Clary could play the title role, “Because obviously, he is central to it all. But he never plays the main role. It’s always kind of a role on the side looking in, even though the show’s always about him.”

julian clary tour 2024

The panto king shared that he thought it would be funny to have Robin Hood played by the famously camp Clary, and pair him with McDonald. The performer kicks off her  With All My Love  concert tour at Blackpool Opera House on October 11.

“Jane leapt at the chance,” Harrison said.

“I said, ”Look, can you imagine you and Julian Clary being in love?!” Talk about Robin Hood’s camp.”

McDonald has an enormous following in the U.K., thanks to her  Cruising  and other tv travel shows, including her  Jane and Friends  variety show and two decades, ending in 2023, as a presenter on  Loose Women . Recently, she stopped by on an episode of  RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs the World .

julian clary tour 2024

Harrison told me that Clary relishes the idea of playing Robin Hood, though he won’t be as strapping as those who have played the outlaw on the big screen. I’m thinking of Kevin Costner in  Prince of Thieves , Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott’s gritty  Robin Hood , and Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn in  Robin and Marion , playing the famous lovers in their twilight. Television’s first  Robin Hood was Richard Greene in  The Adventures of Robin Hood . It was in re-run by the time I caught up with it during my childhood. And let’s not forget Errol Flynn, with Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian, dashing about in Michael Curtis’s 1938 swashbuckler,  The Adventures of Robin Hood .

Harrison laughed, then shook his head. “I’ve a funny feeling Julian’s Robin Hood will be getting Al-A-Dale to do a lot of the dirty work in this production.

“I think Alan-A-Dale might be the one to fire the bow and arrow.”

Harrison acknowledged that part of the Palladium pantomime’s appeal is its familiarity, though he admitted that “There’s always the criticism that it’s always the same. Well, I think people want the same, but also a little bit different, and this year’s going to be a little bit different.”

Each year, award-winning designer Hugh Durrant, in consultation with Clary, attempts to outdo the previous year’s gloriously outlandish costumes. “There are huge creations being cooked up at the moment, all linked to Sherwood and the forest,” Harrison promised.

julian clary tour 2024

Hesitating a moment before asking, but I wondered whether Clary would be wearing a frock or tunic and tights?

“He’ll be in the Robin Hood gear, but all on a gargantuan scale,” Harrison assured.

julian clary tour 2024

Not that Clary’s complaining.

With a wink, Harrison told me that Clary’s “looking forward to working with his Merry Men.”

julian clary tour 2024

My social media’s packed with folk seeking to know the title of this year’s Palladium pantomime.

Harrison observed that “Audiences are kind of like another cast member, and they come along in the spirit of it, which is why I think we get away with things that, perhaps ordinarily, you wouldn’t.“

Though we both loath the word ‘woke’, Harrison agreed that the Palladium pantomime “is a woke-free zone.”

The clamor for tickets last year was such that Harrison, in agreement with Palladium owner Andrew Lloyd Webber, decided to allow standing spaces at the rear of the Palladium’s stalls. However, it caused a commotion at the first performance, when the creative team couldn’t stand in their usual spots because the general public were there.

“If only we had five more rows,” Harrison mused in jest.

The producer has a packed season, with Imelda Staunton’s turn in  Hello,Dolly!  opening at the Palladium for a limited run from July 6 through September 14, and the transfer to Broadway of  Sunset Boulevard , previewing at the St. James Theatre from September 28, starring Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis, fresh from last weekend’s wins at the Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall. The show won a total of seven Olivier Awards, including  best musical revival for Lloyd Webber, Don Black, Christopher Hampton, director Jamie Lloyd’s The Jamie Lloyd Company, Adam Speers and the Ambassador Theatre Group, and Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals, the company formed by Lloyd Webber and Harrison to further exploit the composer’s oeuvre.

A revival of Lloyd Webber’s  Starlight Express , directed by Luke Sheppard, is also being overseen by Harrison. Sheppard’s recent productions include Live Aid  musical  Just For One Day , and  The Little Big Things , which saw Amy Trigg win the best supporting actress in a musical Olivier Award.
