Recent tour reviews

Since 1992 Magnified Plaid, er, MxPx have been bringing their blend of pop-punk to clubs, DYI venues, and Warped Tours.

With 9 albums and a handful of EPs under their belt it’s not hard to find songs to fill their set lists with. While they have over 100 songs in their catalog you can always expect to hear a handful of classics at each one of their shows. “Punk Rawk Show” from their sophomore record ‘Teenage Politics’ is a live show staple. From their most popular album ‘Life In General’ you’ll here “Move to Bremerton” and “Chick Magnet” at every MxPx show.

Bassist and frontman Mike Herrera looks like the punk rock guy your parents warned you about, covered head to toe in tattoos, a raspy voice ala Social Distortion’s Mike Ness, and usually dawning cut off sleeves, but Herrera couldn’t be a nicer guy. He’s one of the kindest and most laid back guys in punk music and he’s as kind as his lyrics are heartfelt.

Most of MxPx’s songs are about girls and heartbreak, but they’re impossible to bring you down as you sing along to infectious chorus’s – go ahead, I dare you not to join Herrera on the “Bum bum doot da’s” on “Chick Magnet.” There’s a reason they’ve been around for over two decades, find out why at one of their shows.

MxPx announces 2024 US Tour Dates with The Ataris

MxPx The Ataris US Tour 2024 poster

In 2024, MxPx will be kicking off the New Year with a headlining show on January 6th at The Hollywood Palladium with Less Than Jake, Relient K, and Smoking Popes, before heading on a Nationwide tour with The Ataris starting in NYC on February 9, 2024, at Webster Hall and ending April 6 in Salt Lake City, UT at The Depot. On April 4th, MxPx and The Ataris will be joined by longtime friends Five Iron Frenzy for their show in Denver at the Odgen Theatre, See below for all dates and ticketing information.

Since its inception in 1992, MxPx has lived the music industry roller coaster. They’ve spent some time on major labels, selling millions of records along the way, to these days self-releasing their own music with a small team. They’ve toured the entire world 10x over and to this day can show up pretty much anywhere and have an audience that wants to see them. It’s a dream that they don’t take for granted. They spent six months refining songs for their latest album, “Find a Way Home”, in hopes of delivering something both lifelong fans and new fans would love. But most importantly delivering something that felt like MxPx. It’s been a long and amazing journey, and this is their new chapter.

Keep a close eye out for more international dates to be announced for 2024 soon. Fans can now stream “Find a Way Home” everywhere music can be streamed and for purchase here .

MxPx still tours the world on their own schedule and on their own terms. They’ve been with major labels, they’ve been with independent labels, and they’ve done it on their own without labels. They’ve been the headlining band, they’ve been the opening band, they’ve played just about every major worldwide festival, and they’ve seen the world living a dream. MxPx has an RIAA-certified Gold Record (1998’s “Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo”), they got the key to the City of Bremerton (for real, there are pictures to prove it), they were in a Super Bowl commercial, recorded the theme song of a major motion picture (Scooby-Doo, 2002), they own their recording studio (Monkey Trench Studios), and that’s just the beginning of the list.

The band has released 11 full-length albums, alongside an even longer list of EPs, compilations, b-sides, and singles. “Let’s Ride”, released in 2018, has become one of the band’s most popular songs; a rare feat for a band this far into its career. It was later featured in Tony Hawk’s 2020 “Pro Skater” remaster which opened them up to an even wider worldwide audience.

The 11th studio album from MxPx, “Find a Way Home”, was released in 2023 to high critical acclaim. The band surprised their fans by performing the record in its entirety live on the internet with support from friends from years past including Simple Plan, Less Than Jake, The Ataris, Relient K, Goldfinger, Zebrahead, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Five Iron Frenzy, Unwritten Law, Bowling for Soup, Anberlin, as well as organizations such as Vans Warped Tour, Ernie Ball, When We Were Young Festival, Montebello Rock Festival, Silver City Brewing, RockSound, Alternative Press, Punk Rock MBA, Spin Magazine, and many more. The live stream was broadcast across the social media accounts of their peers as well as press outlets, reaching a total worldwide audience of hundreds of thousands of viewers across the thirty-minute stream. On the release, MxPx was hailed as “one of the most influential pop-punk bands in the history of the genre who’ve maintained an artistic consistency most can only dream of” by Alternative Press. “Find a Way Home”, has been described by the larger media as having “a sound that is as fresh and relevant as the band has ever been”, (Wall of Sound Australia), “another solidifying album [added] to their discography” (MXDWN), and MxPx’s “best album in quite some time” (NPR).

author PP date 17/03/12

It has been four years since the previous Mxpx album, but they're finally close to releasing their newest album "Plans Within Plans", as well as returning to Europe to do a few shows including the Groezrock Festival in April. We took steps to arrange an interview with their legendary vocalist Mike Herrera, who is residing quite literally on the other side of the planet from us in terms of longitude, but it's exactly situations like these that Skype was designed to solve. So we had a half an hour phone conversation about their upcoming album, how they've evolved throughout their career, the situation with their drummer Yuri and guitarist Tom, as well as how we should perceive the whole Mxpx All Stars touring lineup. Turns out the interview is one of the most in-depth and interesting ones we've done in recent years, so read on to find out stuff about Mxpx you probably didn't already know.

RF.net: How's it going in Mxpx? Mike: It's going well. I'm just going crazy with everything that kind of goes into making a record, getting the artwork done.

RF.net: You guys are gearing out to release a new album called "Plans Within Plans" on April 3rd. That's the first one you guys have released in four years, if you exclude the "Left Coast Punk" EP. So how come it took so long to write it? Mike: It didn't really take that long to write actually, I wrote most of it right before I recorded it. Mainly it was just because we were doing other things. Tom and Yuri have been going through kind of a life transition in a lot of ways. Both of them decided that they don't want to tour full-time, but they still want to be in the band. It's a weird situation that I've never really heard of. I'm sure it has happened, but I haven't really heard about it happening with other bands.

But the bottom line is, Yuri didn't know if he even wanted to be in the band anymore mainly because he's got three kids and a full-time job now. And we kind of just said "you know, if you wanna quit, we totally get it", but then we did a show where we played "Life In General" all the way through. There was such an outpouring from all the fans around the world for Yuri to not quit the band, that he decided he'll stay in the band, he'll record another record. He'll basically not tour, he'll play shows now and then if he can do it, but for regular touring, I started doing this thing called Mxpx All Stars.

So it's just a weird thing where some people still don't quite get what is happening, they don't know if he's in the band or if he's not in the band. But he is in the band, Yuri, our drummer, he's just not a full-time touring musician anymore. So that was another reason why it kind of took us a while to start working on this record. I was waiting to figure out what we were doing.

RF.net: I guess that's what you mean when you said to somebody else that there has been some mayhem behind the scenes, so to say, when putting the album together? Or was there something else on top of the Yuri situation? Mike: Well, then there's Tom as well. Tom is in the same position where basically with the economy, with the way music has been going, it's really hard to be a touring musician and to actually be able to pay all your bills. Now that we've been touring and doing fine, but in order to really make money, you just have to keep touring and keep playing shows. As soon as you stop playing shows, you're almost instantly broke about a month later. I don't know if that makes sense, people don't get it, because they think that musicians are all rich, but really, there's a giant spectrum of musicians as far as money they make. We're just kind of middle-of-the-road working class musicians. Yes, we can make money and pay bills if we tour, but the amount of energy and stress and everything that goes into that, I think they just needed a break. So they decided to get real jobs and still be in the band, still make records. I think eventually they'll come back and wanna do a tour. We just kind of gotta give them a little bit of time.

It is what it is. I kind of went to the fans and asked what their ideas were, and they were kind of like "whatever you can do, keep making records, tour when you can, play shows when you can", and they seem to be enjoying Mxpx All Stars. So that's what I've been doing. Actually I did a solo tour in Europe, and now I'm doing an Mxpx All Stars tour in Europe. So that's gonna be pretty great I think.

RF.net: So does it actually effect you personally then that the other two guys don't have as much time. Is it that you actually want to tour, but then the other guys don't have time to do it? Mike: Right. It does affect me, definitely. It affects how hard I have to work, for one. Really, I have to do everything. I've always done all the songwriting and I've been producing our stuff off and on for a while. My other band Tumbledown, I've produced all that stuff. So I mean that part about it, like making the record, I've always had to do more because I'm writing the songs, but now I have to do more because I have to do all... not all the interviews, they're gonna help with interviews. But just playing live and being out on the road is probably the hardest part about being in a band. It's also one of the most rewarding parts too. So I guess I take the good with the bad. So that's a plus for me.

RF.net: So what should we expect from the new album then? Have you changed your sound at all, or are you still sticking to the classic Mxpx sound? Mike: It's definitely Mxpx sound. There's some more hard influenced music to it, some hardcore type stuff. Which we've always done a little bit, but maybe I'm doing it a little bit more on this record. It's very fast skate punk style stuff. There's a couple of mid tempo songs that are just kind of fun, interesting songs, but most of it is pretty fast.

RF.net: I noticed that was pretty much how "Left Coast Punk" was as well, it was a much rawer record than "Secret Weapon" or "Panic" actually. So what changed in your head, since you are the songwriter, from those two albums to "Left Coast Punk" and now the new album, if it's gonna be a little bit like that?

Mike: Well I think that I'm just writing Mxpx songs rather than trying to write hit songs or anything like that. We have our fan base, people like the Mxpx sound, and of course there's a spectrum of "oh I like Life In General" or "I like Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo", so there's different albums that people like. So I kind of just try to put a little bit of everything into it. At the same time, it's obviously its own album, but it's definitely gonna have a more "Life In General" feel. It's more leaning towards old school Mxpx basically.

RF.net: How would you say then that Mxpx in 2012 compares to the mid to late 90s Mxpx? What's changed in the middle? Mike: Well, definitely we're just different people I think. It's definitely more focused, it's less sloppy. I think the lyrics are a little bit more important. But at the same time, they're actually just continuing on with what we did best as a band. What people liked best about us. Which is just a fun band but at the same time there are songs that really have a serious tone that you can kind of get something from your life as a listener.

I don't know, it's just one of those things where everything's changed in life, and I think some of the songs reflect that lyrically. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to that, because our fans have grown up with us. We do have some younger fans, for sure, but most of the people who I interact with are fans that have listened to us for years and years and years.

RF.net: Right. In fact, I've noticed that there's still quite a loud and vocal group of people who still swear by the "Life In General" album instead of some of the newer material. Does that ever affect or bother you, or anything like that?

Mike: No. I mean every band has an album that most of their fans think is their best album. And that album just hit people at the right time. It was a really coming of age kind of record for us and for the fans. I think fans got into punk rock, that was one of the records that they were listening to at the time, when they sort of discovered music, discovered the lifestyle, discovered whatever it was that made them who they are. I think "Life In General" for some people is that album, or one of those albums, or that album from Mxpx at least.

So for me, that's a good thing. I think that we have different albums that different fans think is that album for them. So some of the younger kids like "The Ever Passing Moment" and "Panic" and "Secret Weapon", because that was their coming of age album. But of course the numbers, the sheer numbers of people, are overwhelmingly into "Life In General".

RF.net: Do you think that you will be able to write another album which will have similar impact or effect in the future? Or maybe even with this new one? Mike: Well, I think songwise, the new one really reflects what "Life In General" was doing. It's of course way more technical, just from the sheer fact that we're better players now and I've got friends that can really rip some guitar solos. I got Stephen Edgerton on a few songs doing some guitar solos from the Descendents. So that being said, we have a few guest people and stuff.

But this record could and probably will be a coming of age record for a certain amount of people. But it's hard when you have so many of your fans that already have a favorite record that's "Life In General" or it's "The Ever Passing Moment". A lot of those fans have said they love "Secret Weapon", but that doesn't necessarily change the fact that they love "Life In General" the most. And that's okay. As long as they are still loving the new stuff. It's just when you're older as a person, I think it's harder to have that feeling about music. Does that make sense?

RF.net: So just to continue on the "Life In General" line, I guess it's fair to say that it's a seminal or classic record within the punk rock or pop punk genre. But why do you think its appeal has lasted through all these years? I mean there are still people who go back and discover this record and really get into it? Mike: I don't know. I guess hopefully because it's a decent record for its time and age and how old we were when we made it, and where the world was at the time. Obviously just politics and economy and social issues have completely changed in ten years. They always do. Or it's been more than ten years of course.

RF.net: A question about "Teenage Politics". To me, that was a really 'raw' sounding record. So I was always wondering if that was on purpose or if it's because the recording went the way it did, or how did it turn out sounding the way it does? Mike: You know, those first two records we put out, "Pokinatcha" and "Teenage Politics" were really just... we were little kids. We were in high school at the time. I think it's different nowadays, we have young bands that really are great at their instruments, can play well, have these influences that are more technical. We were just kind of like...I listened to the Descendents, Black Flag, and Ramones, The Clash, stuff that I didn't really feel like I could ever necessarily do myself, so I kind of just made up weird parts and we just did weird stuff with the music, especially for "Teenage Politics". But as far as the sound of it, honestly, it was us, we had no idea what we were doing in the studio, and neither did the producer at the time [laughs] . And it goes for both of those records. So we didn't know what was good, and they didn't have pro-tools back then. We recorded it in nine days, and that's mixing too. Spring Break of our senior year in high school, we only had a week or ten days off, so we recorded for nine days. And recording that many songs in nine days, even now when we're a much better band, I don't think we could do it in nine days to my standards [laughs] .

RF.net: So today I would say that the Mxpx sound is a lot more polished, or at least more well-produced. But I wonder if you'd ever consider going back to that rawer or edgier sound. I mean I guess you did to some extent on "Left Coast Punk", and maybe the new album which we haven't heard yet. Mike: Well, the new album definitely has some stuff that's pretty produced. But there's also songs where I purposely made the guitars really thrashy sounding, and we recorded it that way. The vocals, I just record my vocals in my basement, I built a little studio down there. So I have a studio in my hometown where I record other bands, and that's where we do most of our records. But it's cool to be able to not worry so much about signal change...and of course I worry about all those things, but I don't worry too much about everything sounding exactly perfect. Because I know it's more about getting the energy on tape and getting the performance.

So for me, I feel like it sounds pretty good, but it's definitely not as polished and produced as "Secret Weapon". But it's somewhere between "Secret Weapon" and "Left Coast Punk" as far as production goes.

RF.net: You've re-joined the Tooth & Nail roster. I think it was already for the previous album actually, but it's the first time since 1997. So how come you actually decided to go back to the label and leave SideOneDummy behind? Mike: Well, that was for "Secret Weapon". That was mainly because they were gonna give me my publishing back for "Life In General" and a couple of other albums. So we kind of made nice and we had a good working relationship. It was pretty hard for me to do, but we did it. I was pretty happy with how we worked with them overall. But I think a lot of what I didn't like about it was mainly the distribution, because it's EMI. So going back to Tooth & Nail was cool in a lot of ways, but the worst part of it was that we're on this great label, they're a different label than when we first were signed to them, mostly different people as well. But EMI...really, they have no heart. They have no heart. They're not in it for music, they're in it for money. And so they didn't distribute our record to the world, but they had rights to it, so we couldn't go and say "sign with Flix records", like we did with this record in Europe. So that really kind of killed me, because it really hurt our world-wide fan base. I kind of just made a decision last year to start coming to Europe more and touring Europe and UK, and everywhere over there. And one of the main things was "okay, well, if I'm gonna do this, I'm need to put out a record here, not just come and tour". I had met a few people who knew Flix Records and Felix from Flix, and we started talking, and we decided to do a record together.

RF.net: So what label is it coming out on in the States then?

Mike: See yeah, Tooth & Nail was actually just "Secret Weapon" and "On The Cover II". Then we self-released on Rock City the "Left Coast Punk" EP. It was just a really small, non-distributed release. So now, we're on MRI records, which is in New York. It's more of a distribution record company, goes through Red Distribution. And it's a deal that we can do with them in North America, but also take and do separate deals in separate regions, so that's why I was able to sign with Flix Records in Europe, and we have the record coming out on different record labels in Japan, in Australia, and New Zealand.

RF.net: To jump to a completely another topic: Mxpx shows. When you write setlists for the shows, how do you select the songs that you're gonna play? Mike: That's a good question. I try to change stuff up. People now and then want really random songs, but for the most part I just try to keep a lot of the favorites in there, because that's what people wanna hear. And I don't mind, I mean I know those songs pretty well, so we just try to keep the fans happy, and keep ourselves interested as well.

RF.net: You mentioned earlier, was it just one show that you played "Life In General" in, or was it a tour?

Mike: We've done it twice. We did one in Vegas and one in Seattle. And people are requesting us to come to their city and do it as well, so we'll see.

RF.net: Yeah, my next question was gonna be if you ever considered to do a "Mxpx plays Life In General", or another album for that matter, the same way as Millencolin did for example with "Pennybridge Pioneers". They did a whole bunch of shows with that last summer, main festivals in Europe basically.

Mike: You know, I'm considering it right now. Good idea! [laughs]

RF.net: So tell me a little bit more about this Mxpx All Stars project. Is this like a direct consequence of what you said earlier about the other two Mxpx members not being able to play as many shows? Mike: Yes, absolutely. So basically what happened was last year, we had a tour booked in Japan, and the guys were waiting to see if they were gonna get their full-time jobs. And it was kind of one of those things where it's like a job...it's for the shipyard, which is a pretty big organization here, it's a career basically, a new career. So when they got their new jobs, they couldn't go to Japan with me. So I'm like "crap, what am I gonna do, what am I gonna do, cancel the tour, or go anyway and figure it out?". So I came up with Mxpx All Stars, where I basically have other guys in bands that I'm friends with come and play with me. So it's kind of like a big party. It's actually really cool for fans to see because, yes it's not Mxpx the original lineup, but it's me, and I'm the voice, and I write all the songs. So it still sounds like Mxpx, but it sounds a little different. In some ways, a lot more like the albums, because most of the time I have two guitarists with me, so I can do all those extra guitar parts that as a three-piece have always been hard for us to do.

RF.net: So it's actually a rotating lineup then? I was under the impression that it was Kris Roe of Ataris playing with you pretty much all the shows? Mike: It's a rotating lineup, yeah. He's played a couple of tours with us, he went to Japan and Australia. And then I've had a couple of other band members in different continents do...I got guys that I sometimes take with me in the US. Or in South America, and then I've got different guys and different bands in Europe. The guys in Europe are actually in a band called Cancer from Switzerland. And one of the other guys is in a band called Snitch, that are pretty well-known in Switzerland.

RF.net: So are these the guys that we'll see with you at Groezrock, for example?

Mike: Yeah. They are band guys from European bands. They're friends of mine. So they're gonna be backing me up. So they're great musicians and great guys.

RF.net: Okay, so there is no Kris Roe? [laughs]

Mike: No Kris Roe. Unless if The Ataris are coming, then I'll bring him up. Believe me, I love Kris Roe, but the guys that are in my band, they know the songs better. Lets just put it that way [laughs] .

RF.net: What should we expect in general at Groezrock from Mxpx All Stars? Mike: I would say a pretty good mix of just favorite Mxpx songs. We usually do quite a few off "Life In General", quite a few off "The Ever Passing Moment", and then kind of just a sprinkling of all the other albums. We do a lot off "Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo", and usually we'll throw something off "Panic" and "Secret Weapon" there. And of course we'll do at least one or two songs from the new album, "Plans Within Plans".

RF.net: How much influence does Christianity still have on your music? Mike: That's a good question. I kind of feel like a lot of the way I express myself has changed over the years, and that's definitely one of them. It's sort of made me who I am as a person, but it's also a touchy subject with me, because I've definitely changed a lot. But people don't necessarily know that because of my songs. But I try to keep everything positive and keep everything... well, with the songs, I don't necessarily always keep it positive, but I never have. But at the same time, I feel like Mxpx is known for being positive, and that's what I've continued to try to do with this new record. There's definitely some songs that, I don't know, are... say the song "Secret Weapon", we've had songs like that on every record, and I think we have a couple on the new record. I haven't really sat down and thought about it honestly. When I write, I write everything so quick, and then I'm working on it. I really don't reflect on what everything means until kind of later. Which I probably should do, we're doing interviews. [laughs]

RF.net: Do you ever meet resistance from the rest of the punk rock scene because of your faith or because of Christianity always being attached to Mxpx? Mike: We used to. I don't think we do as much anymore. I just think that's not really an issue with us. We're not really that kind of band anymore, and never really have been. It's always been more of a story, or something for other people to talk about. But it hasn't really been that big og a part of our band for a long time.

RF.net: Okay, so do you get along with Fat Mike from NOFX? He can be sometimes a bit harsh [laughs]

Mike: Yeah, he's very harsh. But we get along because it's kind of one of those things where we're from different backgrounds, but we both love punk rock music and we both have been around touring and playing. At the very least, he respects us because we've been around and we've done so much. He may tell you differently, I don't know, but as far as I know we're friends [laughs]

RF.net: I also wanted to ask a little bit about the Christmas album that you put out. Just wondering: isn't it a little bit of a weird album to release, since you can really only listen to it one month out of every year, so for the rest of the months, if you listen to it like in June, it's a little bit weird isn't it? Mike: Yeah. Mainly we put that out for the fans obviously, but we had compiled all these Christmas songs because every year we give away a song to our fan club for free. Or it's just part of what we do for our fan club. And we had all these Christmas songs that we had compiled over the years, so we decided to put it all together and release it. Which we never would've done, if we hadn't each year written a new song. It was just basically a compilation, I guess you could say.

RF.net: So how's your Tumbledown project going? Mike: Tumbledown is going very well. Actually we just filmed a new video, and we're gonna be touring in February in the US, just doing shows and we got to play down in South America with Mxpx All Stars, opening. It was kind of weird opening for myself, but we just did a short set, it was almost a little like a sample for Tumbledown. It was pretty cool to do. It's going well, I'd love to come over to Europe, I'd love to do that. But I just know that it's just hard moneywise. We couldn't afford to do it, we don't make any money. We tour in a van, and we play like...our average crowd is like 50 to 100 people. So I mean Tumbledown is very small.

RF.net: So has country music always been a strong inspiration for you, or is that something that's only recently come in?

Mike: It has been, for about thirteen years. But that's when I kind of got into writing country music. I wouldn't say it's even country, honestly, I think that's part of why Tumbledown is maybe slow to start, because a lot of the fans don't wanna give us a chance, when really it's just like punk rock, but with more acoustic type instruments. We still have electric guitar, and drums, and bass, but I play an acoustic guitar. It is twangier and folkier, but really it's just Americana roots mixed with punk rock. I don't know. I got really heavily into country music about 10 years ago, but it's definitely been dying down, as country gets worse and worse. I've heard so many old school country songs and I love them all, but you can only listen to that so much. So I'm kind of like back into punk rock really heavily. I'm into anything that's good, really. Honestly, I like discovering new music, some of which I would never admit to, because it's too mainstream and poppy. But I still like Black Flag, and I love recording punk rock bands in my studio. I think the new Mxpx record reflects that I'm still into punk rock, because it's pretty crazy. For us anyway.

RF.net: Just before we stop, I'm sure that our Danish readers would like to know if you know any Danish bands? Mike: I probably do know Danish bands, but I probably just don't know that they're Danish. Honestly, I just listen to whatever I discover, and sometimes I don't even know anything about them, if that makes sense. So if there are Danish bands that are doing well, chances are yes, I do, but I don't necessarily seek out certain countries.

RF.net: Okay. Well, thanks for this interview, and thanks for taking the time out of your morning, I'm sure you're busy over there.

Mike: Thank you very much! I appreciate it!

MxPx Announce New Tour Dates

MxPx

MxPx have announced some new tour dates.

Cheapest destinations to see Taylor Swift concerts from 'Eras Tour' abroad

Are you a Florida Swiftie with “Eras Tour” FOMO?

It’s definitely too late to find a ticket to Taylor Swift’s October concerts in Miami for less than $2,000.

But you can see an “Eras Tour” show in Warsaw, Poland, on Aug. 1, 2024, for about $500 cheaper than the cheapest concert ticket for a Miami show in October (including a roundtrip plane ticket to Poland, from Miami ).

Travel website Islands.com just released a study on the cheapest overseas destinations for seeing Miss Americana on the European leg of her tour.

To calculate the cheapest overseas shows on Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” this summer, Islands.com aggregated data on each city to find the average most affordable concert tickets, the average cost for two days of spending on hotel rooms, meals, drinks and transportation in each city and each city's safety score.

Here’s the Islands.com list of the cheapest shows on the next leg of Taylor Swift’s tour and how much the cheapest plane tickets from Florida to the cheapest European concert are.

Does “The Eras Tour” come to Europe?

Yes! After a wildly successful first run of “The Eras Tour” in the U.S. in 2023, Taylor Swift extended her tour to an international one and will start performing in Europe this summer before returning for more U.S. shows in the fall.

Here’s Islands.com’s list of the Top 10 cheapest places to see Taylor Swift in Europe this summer, including two days’ worth of hotel, food, drink and transportation costs for each city:

  • Warsaw, Poland: $443 cheapest concert ticket price, $712 total lowest average cost
  • Gelsenkirchen, Germany: $387 cheapest concert ticket price, $749 total lowest average cost
  • Hamburg, Germany: $411 cheapest concert ticket price, $903 total lowest average cost
  • Stockholm, Sweden: $406 cheapest concert ticket price, $935 total lowest average cost
  • Paris, France: $313 cheapest concert ticket price, $971 total lowest average cost
  • Munich, Germany: $472 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,000 total lowest average cost
  • Lisbon, Portugal: $507 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,028 total lowest average cost
  • Lyon, France: $582 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,047 total lowest average cost
  • Cardiff, UK: $679 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,061 total lowest average cost
  • Vienna , Austria: $496 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,089 total lowest average cost

Does Taylor Swift perform in Poland?

Yes! Taylor Swift will be performing for three nights in Warsaw, from Thursday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 3.

The cheapest ticket to see Taylor Swift perform in Warsaw, Poland in August is about $1,500 cheaper than the cheapest ticket to catch one of her Miami shows in October.

As of April, via Google Flights, you can buy a roundtrip plane ticket from Miami to Warsaw (with two layovers) for around $800 .

Add that $800 plane ticket to the around $500 it will cost for a concert ticket and the extra $200 to $300 you’ll spend in two days of visiting Warsaw, and the grand total comes out to a maximum of around $1,600, which is still $400 cheaper than the cheapest ticket to a Miami show.

‘MxPx All Stars’ To Headline ‘South American & European’ Tour

mxpx europe tour

Back on international duty, MxPx All-Stars will embark on a
three-week tour through South America and Europe starting on October 12 in Mexico City , Mexico and ending on October 29 in Stadthalle Buelach, Switzerland. [Tour dates listed below].

In 2010 the All-Star version of Bremerton, WA’s infamous pop-punk trio, MxPx, originated as an outlet for frontman and bassist Mike Herrera to still tour while guitarist Tom Wisniewski and drummer Yuri Ruley took time off. After the success of 2010’s Japan and Asia shows and 2011’s Soundwave Festival dates throughout Australia, featuring Ataris frontman Kris Roe on guitar and Chris Wilson of The Summer Obsession on drums, Herrera decided to keep the momentum going and the impromptu performances alive by shaking up the line-up and bit. This tour’s line-up features Herrera along with Jose Garzon of FLF on guitar and Harley Trotland of Tumbledown, on drums.

Herrera’s alt-country band Tumbledown will be the main support on the tour. Having toured the U.S. and Mexico, this will be the band’s first trip to South America and Europe. Herrera and Trotland will be playing in each of the bands for each show. Tumbledown is touring support of their sophomore album, Empty Bottle, the band’s second release through indie label End Sounds, which is proving to be a defining album for Tumbledown, a follow-up to their self-titled album released in 2009.

The music of MxPx has been known for its ability to unite formerly distinguished fan bases such as the skate/surf community and the punk underground for almost two decades. The song selection on this tour will consist of tracks from MxPx’s massive catalog, some acoustic versions from Herrera, and of course, some new material from their ninth full-length album, which will be released early 2012.

Current Tour Itinerary for MxPx All-Stars & Tumbledown: October 12 – Mexico City, Mexico @ Pasa Guero October 14 – San Jose, Costa Rica @ Club La Azotea October 15 – Ciudad De Panama, Panama @ NUVO Club October 16 – Bogota, Columbia @ Teatro Metro October 17 – Guayquil, Ecuador @ Teatro Sarao October 19 – Santiago, Chile @ Club 334 October 20 – Porto Alegre, Brazil @ Casa do Gaucho October 21 – Rio De Janeiro, Brazil @ Circo Volador October 22 – Sao Paulo, Brazil @ Club Inferno October 22 – São José dos Campos, Brazil @ Hocus Pocus** October 23 – Santos, Brazil @ Captial Disco October 25 – Rosario, Argentina @ Pugliese October 26 – Buenos Aires, Argentina @ Teatro Flores October 28 – Gomaringen, Germany @ Rock Without Limits Festival October 29 – Stadthalle Buelach, Switzerland @ Solid Festival

The Los Angeles native graduated from the University of Southern California and has appeared on Extra! , The Talk, Access Hollywood and Good Morning America .

Taylor Swift is skipping the 2024 Met Gala , PEOPLE can confirm.

Despite reports that she would be attending , the singer, who just dropped her Tortured Poets Department album on April 19, is sitting out fashion's biggest night. Instead, she'll be focusing on rehearsals and tour prep ahead of her Eras Tour dates picking back up on May 9 in Paris before traveling all over Europe during the spring and summer.

The Met Gala, which always takes place on the first Monday in May, will be held on May 6, which would have been a tight squeeze ahead of the tour for Swift, 34.

TMZ previously reported that Swift and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, would not be attending the Met Gala this year.

Swift has already attended the prestigious night six times (her most recent appearance was in 2016) while Kelce has yet to make his debut at the prestigious event.

The Grammy winner has had a huge couple of weeks, following the release of The Tortured Poets Department as she prepares to head back out on tour. She has taken over the Billboard chart (again!), has seen her album rack up 1 billion Spotify streams in a week and emotionally shared glowing reviews for her work .

No big deal, right?

While there’s going to be a blank space with Swift absent, the Met Gala is sure to bring out all the heavy hitters in fashion.

This year’s theme is centered on the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit, which will feature approximately 250 items — including 15 significant pieces such as an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth silk satin ball gown — that span over 400 years of history. “It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,” said Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute.

Expectedly, the dress code is themed “The Garden of Time” and is inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. The story follows a count and countess living “in their utopia of leisure, art, and beauty,” as noted by Vogue , who predicts that stars will show up in ensembles paying homage to florals, music and time.

Zendaya , Jennifer Lopez , Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny will lead the pack as the four co-chairs of the night. Despite the Met Gala being a few weeks away, some of them have yet to finalize their looks (who can blame them, it’s a lot of pressure).

The Challengers actress, an already five-time attendee (her insane Cinderella transformations on the famous steps is simply unforgettable) told Vanity Fair recently that she still doesn’t “really know” what she’s wearing, but she has “ideas.”

Meanwhile, the This is Me…Now singer is still ruminating over a few potentials. “I have a few different sketches. I’m still deciding,” Lopez told Vogue this week. “I’m also one of those people who chooses at the last minute. Like, I like choices, and then I go, ‘Okay, this is how I feel today,’ and then we try to kinda create some type of amazing look — ‘cause that is the night for looks!”

Toronto will soon have a new direct flight to an ancient European city

Latest Videos

If you're in the middle of planning your dream European summer, you'll be pleased to hear that a new nonstop flight service will be launching soon between Toronto and Rome.

Starting Friday, May 10, Italy's national flag carrier, ITA Airways will be launching direct roundtrip flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Rome Fiumicino Airport .

This marks the airline's first direct entry route into Canada and aligns with its plans for greater expansion throughout North America. Earlier this month, ITA Airways also launched a direct flight service from Chicago to Rome.

Throughout May, the airline will be offering six flights weekly from Toronto to Rome, and will ramp up its service to daily flights from June to September to keep up with the busy summer travel period.

Throughout October, the national flag carrier will continue to offer five flights weekly from Toronto to Rome.

The beautiful city of Rome is home to endless historic sites, attractions, and ancient architecture, including the Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and Galleria Borghese.

Both one-way and roundtrip tickets on the new routes are available for booking now.

The Rick Steves guide to life

Travel mogul. philanthropist. legal weed champion. the real rick steves is so much more complex than who you see on tv..

mxpx europe tour

EDMONDS, Wash. — At first glance, it is hard to tell that Rick Steves is protesting.

In the center of his hometown, America’s favorite travel host is perched on the edge of a fountain roundabout engaging in some friendly civil disobedience. As cars circle the intersection, Steves smiles and waves, looking more like an Elf on a Shelf than an angry picketer. This is his way of reminding people he wishes they’d stop driving here.

Steves’s family moved to Edmonds when he was 12, and the 68-year-old is still happy to call it home. Rather than relocate to his beloved Europe, he dreams of bringing some European sensibilities to the edge of the Puget Sound, less than 20 miles north of Seattle.

When he’s not traveling around Europe, writing about Europe or running his multimillion dollar European tour company, the prolific TV host and author likes to squeeze in some local activism. The roundabout routine is his push to block off Edmonds’s very American Main Street for pedestrians. If you squint at it, you can see what Steves sees: this would be the perfect place for a lively town square.

“I like a lot of things about Europe but I love the urban energy of Europe. I love the piazza,” Steves said in a wistful tone you might recognize from PBS. “We don’t have a piazza.”

Unfortunately for Steves, the voting majority of the city does not love the idea of parking their SUVs farther away to shop. So despite his Boy Scout enthusiasm, the most famous man in Edmonds must keep up the perch-and-wave. This is not his only crusade.

Spend any amount of time with Steves, and you’ll encounter a total ham who loves a zany bit. But if you ask him about serious issues like car-free zones, he’ll bring up other causes that are dear to him: affordable housing, supporting the arts, creating senior centers for the elderly to age with dignity.

He’s anti-Trump and pro-cannabis. He does not care if that is bad for business.

The average Rick Steves fan has likely missed this side of him. On TV they see an always-sunny history lover who makes going abroad feel approachable for the average American. That’s an incomplete picture, like thinking you know Paris because you’ve seen the Eiffel Tower on YouTube.

Meet him in Edmonds, and he’ll fill in the rest.

It may look like a lot of gallivanting, but being Rick Steves takes a lot of work.

He spends three months of the year overseas, researching, writing, recording, refining tours, updating guidebooks. If he’s not planning or producing content, he’s often doing promotional events across the United States. This year Steves is celebrating the 40th edition of his first book, “Europe Through the Back Door.” Over the course of his career, he’s built a privately held company that generates $120 million in revenue a year, published 110 books, filmed 12 seasons of “Rick Steves’ Europe” and produced more than 750 podcast episodes.

“It’s just like coordinating a three-ring circus,” Steves said.

That is: really fun, sort of exhilarating and extremely complicated. To pull this off, Steves does not observe the French 35-hour workweek. He’s a workhorse with a reputation for keeping a frenetic pace year-round.

“It’s more of an American work culture,” Amy Duncan, Steves’s communications director, told me. “He’s an unapologetic capitalist but he is also a socialist.”

He makes enough money to fly first class, but he only sits in economy, claiming he doesn’t mind being cramped.

“It never occurred to me that I’m suffering,” he said. “As long as I’ve got an aisle and a seat that reclines, I’m happy.”

Actually, Steves believes airlines should only have one class. It’s part of his egalitarian worldview. He’s also anti-points and anti-miles, refusing to sign up for airline loyalty programs because he believes they bully us into complicating our lives.

Steves also enforces a self-imposed “ carbon tax ” on his tour company, which takes more than 30,000 people to Europe annually. For every customer, Steves invests $30 to atone for emissions created by their flights between the United States and Europe. Last year, that added up to $1 million donated to a portfolio of organizations, Steves said.

“I don’t need to be a slave to the quarterly profit statement. I want to be around and profitable in 10 years from now in a world that you can travel in that’s stable,” Steves said. “This is a smart investment and it’s an ethical expense that I should pay for.”

Rick Steves will tell you he’s motivated by making money; the more he can earn, the more good he can do with it.

“Vicarious consumption, that’s one of my things,” Steves said.

After amassing a windfall from the 2001 George W. Bush tax cuts for high earners, Rick Steves donated $1 million to support the local symphony and performing arts center. In 2005, he used retirement savings to buy a 24-unit apartment complex for the local YWCA’s use as transitional housing for women and children. He figured he’d eventually sell the complex and live on the earnings. About a decade later, he changed his mind and donated the complex valued at $4 million.

He also gave more than $4 million to help build the Edmonds Waterfront Center, a vibrant gathering place for seniors where his daughter had her wedding in 2021. And he gave another $2 million for a similar center in the nearby city of Lynnwood, which broke ground in mid-April .

“Rick puts his money where his mouth is,” said Nancy Leson, a former Seattle Times food critic who used to let Steves’s daughter babysit her son. She’s appreciated his regular presence in the community, like hosting events for local politics at his house and shopping at the farmers market .

“He changed travel,” local resident Karen Howe said on her way into the Waterfront Center with a friend. She’s used Steves’s guidebooks for years. “He’s introduced us to places that most of us would never think of going.”

Rick Steves hasn’t won his piazza battle, but he has brought European touches to Edmonds. At the Rick Steves’ Europe headquarters, there’s an E.U. flag hanging from the mocha brick facade. And gargoyles that drain rainwater, just like at the Notre Dame cathedral.

“Gargoyles scare away evil spirits,” Steves points out, unable to suppress his inner tour guide.

Here Steves employs more than 100 people: editors, audio producers, tour specialists and cartographers such as Dave Hoerlein, his first employee. That’s excluding the fleet of guides and drivers he contracts across the pond to shepherd tour customers.

Inside, he bounds through a maze of cubicles, his neck craned forward, always at an eager pace. His 6-foot frame appears leaner than previous seasons of his life, but his signature look is familiar. No, not khakis and a button-down. That’s vintage Rick. These days, he wears dark jeans and a button-down, plus a thin scarf and leather sneakers.

During a day of meetings, Steves’s fjord-blue eyes lit up at the minutia of the business. He went over new maps with Hoerlein. He and longtime co-author Cameron Hewitt addressed problems like finding a “less glitzy” stop on the Amalfi Coast that’s not Sorrento. They discussed whether a place is worth visiting after it’s gotten too popular, and Steves indulged in some gallows humor.

“It’s going to be like holding the corpse of a loved one who just died,” he said.

His critics argue the “Rick Steves Effect” can turn a charming village, restaurant or museum into a tourist magnet. Matthew Kepnes, the travel writer behind the blog Nomadic Matt , points to the Swiss town Zermatt, which he says Steves put on the map, and has since dealt with overtourism . You’re bound to bump into groups with Rick Steves guidebooks in Italy’s increasingly crowded Cinque Terre.

Whether Steves is actually to blame for changing a place is up for debate. There are plenty of destinations he’s covered that haven’t been inundated with swarms of Americans (see also: Gdańsk).

Steves says he assesses whether a place wants tourism, if it can handle it gracefully. If they don’t or can’t, he may mention it but not promote it.

He has faith — maybe too much — that his clients share his values.

“Does [my work] change the personality of a town? It can. Am I a dramatic impact on Europe? No,” he said.

“There’s a handful of places I really promote aggressively that I’ve had a serious impact on, but otherwise ... my travelers are the kind of people that take only pictures and leave only footprints ... they’re good travelers.”

You don’t have to spend much time in Edmonds to see why Rick Steves never considered leaving.

The city — population roughly 42,000 — sits on a majestic inlet. You can get to a major international airport in about an hour. The community is so courteous, it has an “umbrella share” program in case people forget their own on a rainy day. As Steves walks around town, he greets people by name. He lives within walking distance to both his favorite diner and a pétanque court, the French answer to Italian bocce. He plays bongos at his church on Sundays.

In 1967, Richard “Dick” Steves moved the family here because he was worried about Rick Junior.

“I was hanging out with dangerous kids and going down the wrong trail,” Steves said. Seriously.

His dad, an Army veteran, got by in the upscale suburb as a piano technician and importer. When Steves was 14, his parents dragged him on a work trip to Europe to visit piano factories; it was a radical experience that sparked his lifelong passion for travel.

Back in Edmonds, Steves started teaching piano, eventually turning his savings into trips abroad of his own — not only to Europe, but Turkey, Nepal, Afghanistan. He went to college nearby, earning degrees in European history and business from the University of Washington, where he played in the Husky Marching Band.

After graduation, Steves figured he could keep up his routine: give piano lessons during the school year, then travel during the summer. He started teaching travel classes in the same recital hall where his piano students performed. This was back when there was no internet and few guidebooks to consult for trip planning.

The classes were a hit. At 25, Steves turned his lecture materials into a 180-page book, and self-published “Europe Through the Back Door,” in 1980.

Four years later, he hosted his first European minibus tour group, serving as both bus driver and guide.

His businesses have evolved — his bus tours now take up to 28 travelers, a number Steves says is a sweet spot between making the tour more affordable yet enjoyable for customers and profitable for the company. But his mission has remained the same: to be the best resource for European travel and help Americans travel better.

“I just focus on that and I love it,” he said. “It takes my life out of balance — which is not good — but it lets me do a lot of stuff that I believe in and that’s good.”

Steves has been open about the challenges of being a travel mogul. As he built his empire, he was also raising a family. Being “married” to both took a toll. In 2010, Steves and his wife, Anne, divorced after 25 years of marriage.

Up the hill from his junior high, Rick Steves’s modest beige home offers a window into his many lives. There are family photos on the walls, from older relatives to his baby grandson, Atlas. He hosts political fundraisers on the sprawling deck. A painting of Kerala, India, nods to one of his favorite countries (people forget Steves did four editions of “Asia Through the Back Door”).

Next to his grand piano, there’s a stuffed creature that Steves calls his “Silver Fox” baring its teeth and wearing novelty sunglasses with cannabis leaves on the lenses — a nod to two of his interests: taxidermy and marijuana activism.

“It’s the civil liberties … it’s the racism … everything about it is wrong,” he said of keeping weed illegal.

As for the toothy fox, Steves doesn’t do typical souvenirs anymore, but he makes an exception for stuffed animals.

“The wooden shoes and the pewter Viking ships are so obvious,” he said. “I like to do something a little more organic and a little more striking and it takes me back there — I like it.”

He’s a very good piano player. He can also play the sousaphone and the trumpet — which he did regularly during the pandemic, performing taps for his neighbors at sunset.

Covid-19 was a nightmare for the travel business, but a miracle for Rick Steves’s love life.

After running in the same social circles for years, he and Shelley Bryan Wee, a prominent local bishop, started dating at the end of 2019. They had a lot in common. Both are progressive Lutherans. Both are divorced with adult children. But neither worked a typical 9-to-5, and one of them spent three months of the year in Europe.

Then lockdown happened. Steves, who couldn’t remember if he’d ever had dinner in the same place 10 nights in a row, spent 100 nights at the same table with Wee. It solidified their relationship.

“Shelley is a constant,” Steves said. He still struggles with the balancing act between work and love.

When the stars align and they’re both in Edmonds, Wee cooks, and Steves plays sous chef. They walk Jackson, Wee’s labradoodle, creating their own version of the passeggiata, Italy’s traditional evening stroll. They play table tennis before dinner.

When the world reopened, they started traveling together. They’ve made time for a few big vacations: a trip to Morocco, where they were caught in a windstorm that blew the windows out of their car; a luxury barge cruise through Burgundy, France, “that was embarrassingly expensive,” Steves confessed, followed by a week hiking in the Swiss Alps; and another hiking trip between remote lodges on Mont Blanc.

Before their first trip, Steves edited the contents of Wee’s suitcase, because packing light is part of his philosophy.

“What do you say?” she asked. “You’re talking to Rick Steves.”
