Rancho Mission Viejo unveils state-of-the-art fire facility that feels anything but ‘temporary’

Residents of the Village of Rienda and Rancho Mission Viejo got a glimpse of a new-style firefighting operation when the ribbon was cut on Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) Station 67 on Thursday, Dec. 8.

How new is the unique, first-of-its-kind modular station?

Its address at the corner of Cow Camp and Legado roads didn’t show up on the mobile mapping devices most visitors used to try to find the station.

The temporary station will service the Village of Rienda and provide support to the nearby Sendero Station for the next seven or eight years until a permanent station is built.

Despite the “temporary” tag, the new station is a state-of-the-art, first-of-its-kind 2,600-square-foot prefabricated facility, with a $5 million price tag. The station was built as part of a Fire Protection Agreement between the county agency and Rancho Mission Viejo.

Called the “Cadillac” of temporary stations by OCFA Fire Chief Brian Fennessy, the facility contains all the amenities of a permanent facility, is open 24/7, and is home to a captain and four-person engine company, all of whom are also paramedics and carry the same ALS medical equipment as an ambulance.

“In the past we’d be in double-wide trailers,” said Captain John Kafoury of former temporary stations. “This feels like a permanent station.”

Captain Sean Doran, public information officer for the fire authority, praised Rancho Mission Viejo, which partnered with Nevada modular construction company Xtreme Cubes, to construct the first prefabricated station in Orange County.

“They took this as if it was their own,” Doran said. “They wanted the fire department to have everything it needed.”

Doran said the station is “green, faster and smarter,” while still fulfilling the priorities of public safety and service.

The facility features six individual dorm-style rooms, a captain’s office, four bathrooms, including an ADA accessible public restroom, a kitchen with three full refrigerators (one for each shift), a fitness room, and a day room with recliners and a wide-screen television.

The station also has a three-engine bay with apparatus to service all the engines. The station currently houses a Type 1 fire engine to service residential areas, and a Type 3 engine equipped for more rugged terrain and to fight wildfires.

Outgoing Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, who attended the ribbon-cutting, said she had secured funds to deliver two HeloPods to the area, which are high-capacity water tanks that can be used to fight wildfires more effectively. She said she hoped the new station “will set residents at ease,” about local firefighting capabilities.

The station was custom made offsite and delivered to its new home, reducing waste, site disturbance and saving time. However, according to representatives from the company, the station conforms to the same building codes and architectural specifications.

Xtreme Cubes’ projects have ranged from single-family homes to Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Mike Balsamo, Senior Vice President of Governmental Relations for Rancho Mission Viejo, said the developers have committed to a permanent station that will be more centrally located in Rienda by 2030.

He added that Rancho Mission Viejo has agreed to build two more permanent stations as development phases are completed.

When the new station is built, portions of the temporary facility can be moved elsewhere in the community for a different use.

In introducing the new station, Fennessy invoked the spirit of Marguerite “Daisy” O’Neill, matron of the O’Neill/Moiso/Avery family that once owned and managed more than 200,000 acres of The Ranch that includes the family-developed cities and communities of Ladera Ranch, Las Flores, Mission Viejo, and Rancho Santa Margarita.

One of O’Neill’s credos was “If you take care of the land, it will take care of you.”

In partnering on the new facility, Fennessy said OCFA honors that philosophy and “more than that, takes care of people.”

Rancho Mission Viejo Breaks Ground on New Fire Station

This past Friday, Rancho Mission Viejo and the Orange County Fire Authority celebrated the groundbreaking of a new OCFA fire station located prominently within Rancho Mission Viejo’s first Village of Sendero .

Fire Station 56, located at 56 Sendero Way, was dedicated by Rancho Mission Viejo to the OCFA. Rancho Mission Viejo’s President and CEO Tony Moiso spoke at Friday’s ground breaking to mark the momentous occasion.

“All of us at Ranch Headquarters congratulate all who have worked so hard to make this essential public facility a reality and are proud to celebrate the sixth fire station built on the former land of Rancho Mission Viejo,” said Moiso.

Planned to be roughly 10,000 square-feet, the fire station will feature three apparatus bays, eight dormitory rooms and will sit on a one-acre site with expansive views of the historic 23,000-acre ranch just up the Ortega from San Juan Capistrano.

Once completed, Fire Station 56 will complement Rancho Mission Viejo’s overall style, landscape, and legacy of rich history.

Designed and built by the combined efforts of Erickson Hall Construction and WLC Architects, the station’s design is inspired by the work of famed architect – Irving Gill. Gill is known for the Spanish Progressive style of simplicity and minimalist form that’s reminiscent of the California Mission style. WLC Architects’ station design at Rancho Mission Viejo features simple shapes, stucco walls, deeply recessed arched doors and arched window openings.

During the ground breaking, Tony Moiso was joined by San Juan Capistrano Mayor Sam Allevato, OCFA Fire Chief Keith Richter, Orange County Supervisor Patricia Bates, as well as Mike Hall and Dave Erickson from Erickson-Hall Construction.

Building of the new fire station should commence sometime in March, and official operations from Fire Station 56 is scheduled to begin in January 2015.

According to the OCFA, Engine Company 56 will have a Paramedic Assessment Unit with three firefighters and plenty of room to grow as the needs of the area expand.

“It’s great to know that this new station will provide not only fire protection, but also paramedics for Sendero, Esencia and portions of Ladera Ranch and San Juan Capistrano,” explained Moiso.

RANCHO MISSION VIEJO, CA — Rancho Mission Viejo residents have a new fire station close to home, after Orange County Fire Authority officials and community residents celebrated the opening of a first-of-its-kind interim fire station for the new Village of Rienda on Friday.

The roughly 2,600-square foot construction was built as part of the Fire Protection Agreement for Rancho Mission Viejo and will help improve response times to local calls and offer support to the existing station in Sendero, OCFA officials said.

Orange County Fire Authority employees will be able to live and work out of the facility, authorities said.

Find out what's happening in Orange County with free, real-time updates from Patch.

The interim fire station includes six dorm-style rooms, Captain's office, four bathrooms — including an ADA-accessible public bathroom — full kitchen, office space, dispatch area, day room, fitness room, telecommunications room and an apparatus to support three fire trucks.

The interim fire station features a modular concept facility that was designed, engineered, fabricated and assembled by custom modular construction company Xtreme Cubes. According to an OCFA news statement, modular construction is a "greener, faster and smarter way to build."

A modular building is a prefabricated building that consists of repeated sections called modules.

The new station will house a four-person engine company, and is estimated to be in operation for the next five to 10 years — or until a permanent station is built in a more central location within Rienda, officials said.

VIDEO: Abandoned Orlando hotel catches fire

Firefighters respond to i-drive grand resort & suites.

Brandon Hogan , Digital Editor

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando firefighters responded early Saturday to a burning abandoned hotel in the city’s tourist district.

The Orlando Fire Department set out around 6:15 a.m. to the dilapidated I-Drive Grand Resort & Suites in the 7000 block of S. Kirkman Road, a stone’s throw away from other hotels such as Universal’s Endless Summer Resort along Universal Boulevard and a Hampton Inn location just further south, according to a statement.

Crews reported a two-alarm fire that extended to about a quarter of the building, the statement reads. A spokesperson for the city told News 6 they were advised at least one person was found inside and escorted out, adding the cause was likely due to activity in the building.

Photos and video shared by the fire department show flames and smoke pouring from the structure.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still said to be under investigation.

According to property records, the hotel was deemed uninhabitable in an Aug. 31, 2020 inspection that found noncompliance with city code regarding fire protection. The inspection noted in part the structure’s state as “neglected, damaged, dilapidated, unsecured or abandoned.”
