Pioneer Pro Tour: Day One Recap
- February 17, 2023
On to Day Two
The first day of the Pioneer Pro Tour has wrapped up, and the Top 8 going into day two has a few surprise inclusions and a notable lack of Green Devotion and Azorius Control. Going into the final round of the day, only Selesnya Auras and Abzan Greasefang were undefeated. To anyone who has been following and playing Pioneer for a while, this is probably a strange sentence to read, but that’s how things tend to play out at these types of events, where metagaming can pay off in a big way.
While Rakdos Midrange represented 15 percent of the decks registered for the Pro Tour and Green Devotion represented 14 percent , Rakdos only put four results into the Top 32 of Day One, and Green Devotion only three.
The Pioneer Meta
Those who advance at this Pro Tour are those who do well in both Draft and Pioneer, skewing the overall Pioneer results. Often, a player who places highly at an event or makes Day Two didn’t necessarily have the best performance in the Pioneer portion. In the following section, we have removed the Draft results to get a better sense of which decks performed best in Pioneer when played by the best players for the highest stakes.
The decks with the highest winrates on the day include the undefeated Azorius Spirits, Gruul Vehicles splashing Blue for Stubborn Denial , Grixis Midrange, Selesnya Auras and Bant Humans. Even in an open decklist event like the Pro Tour where the surprise factor is largely removed, the unfamiliarity factor still exists. I would be willing to bet a fair amount that nobody who was testing for the Pro Tour playtested against Grixis Midrange. Most probably didn’t test against Azorius Spirits or Bant Humans.
Below, Ben “ILOVEAZORIUS” has compiled a series of data detailing the Day One metagame, and will return tomorrow for the Day Two action, so stay tuned!

rose-emoji started playing Magic: The Gathering during Battle for Zendikar, then took a break from the game until Throne of Eldraine. Pioneer got him back into Magic full-force, and the launch of Arena on mobile hooked him in forever. Now that his favorite format is working its way onto Arena, he can be found grinding the format to death. Only ever Grixis colors, but sometimes he can have a little Jund as a treat.

MTG Standard meta at Pro Tour Minneapolis healthy mix of old decks and new cards
A healthy mix of Magic: The Gathering Standard Constructed decks were submitted for the second Pro Tour of the 2022-2023 season beginning on May 5, from Aggro to Control.
The Standard meta within MTG competitive play has reached a healthy spot leading up to fall rotation. Many tried-and-true builds like Rakdos Midrange, Grixis Midrange, and Esper Legends still rank as the best three decks within the format. New cards from MOM and ONE have improved the existing top MTG decks while also supporting less popular Traditional builds like Five-Color Ramp, Mono-White Midrange, Mono-Red Aggro, and a host of reanimator decks.
Over 200 MTG players from around the globe are competing at Pro Tour Minneapolis , which features MOM Draft and Standard Constructed gameplay. Of those 200-plus players, the most popular submitted deck was Rakdos MIdrange, according to WotC .
- Rakdos Midrange : 47 players and 18.7 percent of field
- Grixis Midrange : 39 players and 15.5 percent of field
- Esper Legends : 30 players and 11.9 percent of field
- Rakdos Reanimator : 23 players and 9.1 percent of field
- Grixis Reanimator : 18 players and 7.1 percent of field
- Domain Control : 12 players and 4.8 percent of field
- Five-Color Ramp : Nine players and 3.6 percent of field
- Mono-White Midrange : Nine players and 3.6 percent of field
- Jeskai Control: Seven players and 2.8 percent of field
- Rakdos Breach : Seven players and 2.8 percent of field
Roughly half the field at MTG Pro Tour Minneapolis brought decks that have a solid record of performance within a competitive Standard best-of-three format. And no one build is dominating the field over the others. The other half of the players at the second Magic Pro Tour of the season chose to bring decks like Domain Control, Rakdos Breach, Five-Color Ramp, and even Soldiers.
- Azorius Soldiers : Three players
- Grixis Incubate : Three players
- Mono-Blue Tempo : Three players
- Four-Color Legends : Two players
- Orzhov Toxic: One player
- Orzhov Phyrexians : One player
- Mono-Black Midrange : One player
Many Pro players likely chose decks they were comfortable playing and have tested at various organized play tournaments prior to the Pro Tour at Minneapolis. But that doesn’t mean the lesser-played decks are bad. Azorius Soldiers has beaten out Control and Midrange builds before and is solid against other Aggro decks. In addition, Orzhov Phyrexians is a new Standard deck following the release of MOM and has proven powerful on the MTG Arena Ranked ladder along with Mono-Black Midrange and Grixis Incubate.
Fans can watch the action unfold at MTG Pro Tour Minneapolis from May 5 to 7. Six rounds will feature MOM Draft while the remaining Swiss rounds and playoff rounds will showcase Traditional Standard Constructed.
Pro Tour Collector Set
- VisualEditor
- View history
The best Pro Tour decks of 1996 , eight in total, were released all together in a Pro Tour Collector Set . Only 20,000 of these sets were produced.
- 1 Description
- 2.1 Michael Loconto, Champion
- 2.2 Eric Tam, Quarterfinalist
- 2.3 Bertrand Lestree, Finalist
- 2.4 Shawn "Hammer" Regnier, Quarterfinalist
- 2.5 Leon Lindback, Semifinalist
- 2.6 George Baxter, Quarterfinalist
- 2.7 Preston Poulter, Semifinalist
- 2.8 Mark Justice, Quarterfinalist
Description [ | ]
The set originally retailed for $125 US and became available in May 1996. They were the first of a series of high-profile preconstructed decks for experienced players. Carefully chosen, they are imitations of the eight most successful deck archetypes present at the 1996 Pro Tour in New York. To avoid printing legal top-rated tournament-level cards, all cards were made illegal for tournament play by printing them with a non-standard backside. Additionally, the cards feature a golden border and have a gold signature of the deck's creator. The back of the cards feature the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour logo and are labeled "Inaugural Tournament New York City February 1996."
Part of each deck is a bio card which provides some background of each player and a decklist card that lists the content of each deck. Additionally, blank cards were added to raise the number of cards per deck to 90.
This Pro Tour used an interesting deck construction format, a variation of the Standard or "Type II" format. In addition to the usual restrictions for Standard decks, each deck was required to contain at least five cards from each of the legal expansions. Meeting this requirement without lowering the efficiency of the decks gave the deck-builders an interesting challenge.
These cards were written under Fifth Edition rules.
- Deck I - Michael Loconto (champion)
- Deck II - Eric Tam (quarter-finalist)
- Deck III - Bertrand Lestree (runner-up)
- Deck IV - Shawn "Hammer" Regnier (quarter-finalist)
- Deck V - Leon Lindback (semi-finalist)
- Deck VI - George Baxter (quarter-finalist)
- Deck VII - Preston Poulter (semi-finalist)
- Deck VIII - Mark Justice (quarter-finalist)
These cards are not legal in any DCI -sanctioned tournaments.

Michael loconto, champion [ | ].
“Loconto, a 26-year-old social worker from Grafton, Massachusetts, played a blue-white Millstone deck that generally defeated his opponents by running them out of cards. One innovative concept was his addition of Hallowed Ground, which he used to protect himself against Armageddon, to activate his Land Tax, and to save his Mishra's Factories from destruction.”
