AirPlay lets you wirelessly stream video, audio, or your screen from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows device running iTunes to an AirPlay receiver like an Apple TV, Mac, or smart TV. Sometimes, things don't "just work" like they're supposed to, so you'll need to tweak a few things.

AirPlay is a wireless streaming technology used by Apple devices like the iPhone , iPad , and Mac . You can use it to send video, audio, or mirror your display to an AirPlay receiver like a Mac or Apple TV. This is accessed using Control Center or using the AirPlay button in video and music apps.

Many non-Apple devices can also function as AirPlay receivers including smart TVs from Samsung (Tizen), LG (webOS), Vizio, TCL (and other Roku TV devices ), Sony (Android TV) and others. The list includes smart speakers from Sonos and AV receivers from Denon and Marantz.

To use your Mac as an AirPlay receiver you'll need to be running macOS 12 or later with an iPhone or iPad that uses iOS 14 or later. The following models can function as an AirPlay receiver:

• MacBook introduced in 2018 or later
• MacBook Pro introduced in 2018 or later
• MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later
• Mac mini introduced in 2020 or later
• iMac introduced in 2019 or later
• Mac Pro introduced in 2019 or later

Apple doesn't state exactly how close to a receiver an AirPlay source device needs to be for the technology to work, but it's worth keeping this in mind if you're having trouble with wireless streaming (particularly dropouts).

You can test this by sitting down as close to your AirPlay device and trying to connect. If your problem isn't solved, try one of the other solutions below. If you're using your Apple TV or HomePod as a wireless AirPlay speaker, keep in mind that walking around the house with the source device (like your iPhone) in your pocket may cause the connection to drop.

Are you sure you connected to the correct receiver? This is mostly a problem with the Apple TV since all Apple TV units are labeled "Apple TV" out of the box. If I had $1 for every time someone who lives nearby had tried to connect to my Apple TV either by mistake or on purpose I'd probably have enough money for a month of AppleTV+ by now.

The easiest remedy for this is to rename your Apple TV under Settings > General > About > Name. You can do the same for your Mac under System Settings > General > About > Name, though you probably won't have this issue since your Mac should have the same unique label from when it was first set up, for example, "Tim's MacBook Pro".

Both the AirPlay source device (like an iPad) and the receiver (your Apple TV, Mac, or smart TV) need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for AirPlay to work. Check this on your various devices if you're having trouble getting things working.

On an iPhone or iPad, head to Settings > Wi-Fi. On a Mac, head to System Settings > Wi-Fi, and on an Apple TV this can be found under Settings > Network. You should check if your smart TV or another receiver (like a Roku) is also using the same network using the device settings menu.

Wi-Fi extenders shouldn't interfere with AirPlay playback, but there's always a chance. Switch settings so that both devices are using the same access point where possible (preferably the home router) to avoid any network mismatch problems.

For an AirPlay receiver to function as a host, it must be set up accordingly. You'll need to make sure that "AirPlay Receiver" is enabled on your Mac, Apple TV, smart TV, or other AirPlay receiver and that permissions are set accordingly.

On a Mac, head to System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff. On an Apple TV head to Settings > AirPlay and HomeKit. On a smart TV or another device, you'll need to dig into your device settings.

For the best chance at success, change "Allow AirPlay for" (macOS), "Allow access to Apple TV" (Apple TV), or similar to "Everyone" rather than alternatives like "Current User" or "Anyone on the Same Network". You can also set password requirements here which we'd recommend turning off until things are running smoothly.

VPNs can cause all sorts of issues with AirPlay. If you're going to attempt to stream wirelessly to a TV, Mac, smart TV, or another receiver, you should disable any VPN connections on either device before you begin. You should be able to avoid this problem if you have a VPN router that encrypts all of your network traffic , since individual device settings seem to be to blame.

Another potential quick fix for AirPlay problems is to disconnect from the current Wi-Fi network and reconnect again which you can do by toggling Wi-Fi on and off on both your source and receiver.

On an iPhone or iPad you can do this by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen and disabling Wi-Fi then re-enabling it again in Control Center . You can do the same in Control Center for Mac by clicking on the "Wi-Fi" toggle under Control Center in the top-right corner of the menu bar. On an Apple TV and many other receivers, you'll need to turn the device off and on again (simply unplug it from the wall).

It's worth restarting any devices that are having AirPlay issues, including both the source and receiver. Turn off your iPhone or iPad by going to Settings > General > Shut Down then using the "Slide to Power Off" slider that appears (or tell Siri to restart your device ). Press and hold the side button to turn it back on. On a Mac, click on the Apple logo then choose "Restart" and your computer will reboot.

If AirPlay isn't working on your smart TV you can also try restarting to fix the problem. Since most smart TVs and set-top boxes don't fully turn off ( instead staying in standby mode ), the easiest way to do this is to unplug your TV from the wall, wait 30 seconds, then plug it in and try again.

You may also want to try restarting any network equipment that may be causing the problem, including routers and wireless extenders.

iOS, macOS, tvOS, and other firmware updates may fix problems with AirPlay. On an iPhone , iPad , or Mac , head to (System) Settings > General > Software Update and install any pending updates. These can be found under Settings > System > Software Updates on an Apple TV .

Smart TVs and other receivers also receive software updates over the internet. Whether it's a Roku TV , Samsung, LG, TCL, Vizio TV, or another brand, you'll need to look around your device settings menu to find this option.

AirPlay isn't the only temperamental Apple wireless technology. Wireless file transfer technology AirDrop is also prone to unexplained failures .

If your Apple TV is old and your smart TV doesn't have built-in AirPlay functionality, you might be interested in a new Apple TV 4K . Alternatively, upgrade to one of the best smart TVs and AirPlay may be already present.

How to AirPlay Safari from iPhone, iPad, and Mac

How to AirPlay Safari to TV from iPhone or iPad

1. Start by connecting your Mac to the same WiFi network as your Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV.

2. To turn on AirPlay on Mac , tap the Control Center icon at the top menu bar of your Mac .

3. Further, click the Screen Mirroring button.

4. Select your Apple TV or Smart TV with the AirPlay 2 feature from the available devices.

5. Enter the passcode displayed on the TV screen to begin AirPlay.

Sometimes, AirPlay may not be working on your device for several reasons. The possible reasons could be the unstable network, device incompatibility, uncleared cache, Airplane mode, outdated firmware, software glitches, and more. Whatever the reason, try the following troubleshooting steps to eradicate the issue.

• Check whether your Apple device and the Smart TV are connected to the same WiFi network.
• Check if the network connected to your devices is stable. If it is unstable, change the network or restart your WiFi router.
• Ensure that the Smart TV to which you AirPlay Safari has AirPlay support.
• Turn off the Airplane mode on your Apple devices if it is turned on.
• Disable VPN or Firewall on your Mac Safari browser.

AirPlay is one of the most useful Apple ecosystem features — in fact, it's so good that in recent years Apple has opened up the technology to allow third-party devices to use it. It lets you wirelessly beam audio and video to different devices. Watching a video on your MacBook? You can AirPlay it to your Apple TV and watch on the big screen. Listening to some sweet tunes on your iPhone? AirPlay that audio to your favorite AirPlay speaker.

Unfortunately, even iOS16 and Apple's other latest software can sometimes mess up, you might find that sometimes AirPlay is not working properly. If you're having trouble with AirPlay, there are some steps you can try to correct the behavior on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and get you back to streaming your audio and video. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot problems with AirPlay .

Make sure you're on the same Wi-Fi network if AirPlay is not working

AirPlay requires both the devices you're streaming from and the device you're streaming to to be on the same Wi-Fi network to work. If you're trying to beam some content from your iPhone to your AirPlay-compatible TV, you need to make sure both devices (your phone and your TV) are on the same network. So, before you try any other troubleshooting tips when AirPlay isn't working, make sure you've checked that everything is connected to the same network. 

Try toggling Wi-Fi if AirPlay is not working

Sometimes the best solution is to turn it off and then on again. You can toggle the Wi-Fi off and on with just a few taps or clicks on the logo on your best iPhone , iPad, and Mac. Doing this can sometimes fix an errant connection, which may be why AirPlay isn't working for you.  

Note: Control Center no longer turns Wi-Fi completely off. It simply stops the current connection but leaves things like AirPods, Apple Pencil, and Apple Watch available. To fully turn it off, head to Settings.

How to toggle Wi-fi on iPhone and iPad

1. Launch Settings from your Home screen. 2. Tap Wi-Fi . 3. Tap the Wi-Fi On/Off Switch twice. Once to turn it off and another time to turn it back on.

Don't forget to toggle the Wi-Fi on your other devices. If you're trying to AirPlay something to your TV, for example, go into the TV settings and try disconnecting and reconnecting to the Wi-Fi network.

Press and hold the sleep/wake button. 4. Keep holding down the sleep/wake button, even after the Shut Down screen shows up. Once the screen goes black, you can stop holding the button.

If you're using an iPhone or iPad without Face ID, follow these steps: 1. Press and hold down the  On/Off  button on the right side. 2. While continuing to hold the  On/Off  button, press and hold the  volume down  button on the left side of your iPhone. 3. Hold both buttons as the screen  turns off , and keep holding them until the screen turns  back on  and displays the Apple logo.

How to reset a Mac

If you have a Mac that you want to reset, follow these steps: 1. Click the Apple icon at the far left of the Menu bar. 2. Click Restart.  

Now that you've reset your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, trying using AirPlay again to see if that fixes the problem of AirPlay not working. Remember you may want to reset your third-party devices as well, to see if that helps. 

Keeping your device like your best Mac up to date is always a good idea. Sometimes, new versions of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS introduce compatibility problems; other times, they fix them. So, if AirPlay is not working as expected, check to ensure you're on the latest software. 

How to check for software updates on iPhone and iPad

1. Launch Settings from your Home screen. 2. Tap General 3. Tap Software Update

From here, you'll be able to see if there is a software update. If there is an update, you can download and install it and see if that solves the issue of AirPlay not working once it's booted back up and ready to go. 

How to check for software updates on Mac if AirPlay is not working

1. Click the Apple icon at the far left of the Menu bar. 2. Click System Preferences . 3. Click Software Update .

Most of the time, AirPlay appears effortlessly in the Share menu of your media app, and you don't need to think too much about it. Occasionally, it doesn't work, and it's not clear why.

What to do when AirPlay is not working on iPhone or iPad

Try these fixes if your iPhone or iPad isn't connecting: 

Check for AirPlay compatibility 

Before you go messing around with your Wi-Fi router or device settings, check to see if your device even supports AirPlay . There's a chance you might need to update your iOS to use it.

Check Wi-Fi connection

Next, check to make sure that the devices you're using for AirPlay are not only connected to Wi-Fi, but connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Check device audio

Raise the volume level on both devices and ensure neither are muted.

Turn Wi-Fi on and off 

Enable airplane mode , then turn it off to force your devices to reconnect to Wi-Fi .

Make sure operating system is up to date 

For AirPlay 2, which allows you to stream music to multiple audio devices at once, you need iOS 11.4 or later. Check to see if your iPhone or iPad has the most updated iOS.

Restart your device 

A simple, yet effective solution, restarting your iPhone or iPad might just be the thing that fixes your issue.

What to do when AirPlay is not working on a Mac

Consider these solutions if your Mac seems to be the issue:

Turn Wi-Fi on and off

Disconnect from your Wi-Fi by clicking the Wi-Fi icon at the top-right of your screen and clicking on the toggle. Wait a minute or so, then click it again to turn the Wi-Fi back on.

Check firewall 

Check your firewall settings to ensure it's not blocking your device from AirPlay. Go to System Preferences, and if your firewall is on, ensure that Block incoming connections is not checked and Automatically allow built-in software to receive incoming connections is.

For Macs, you need iTunes 12.8 or later or macOS Catalina to stream audio for AirPlay 2 and macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or later if you're streaming video. Check to see if your Mac has the most updated iOS .

Restart your Mac 

A good old fashioned restart doesn't hurt, and might just fix your issue.

What to do when AirPlay is not working on your Apple TV, smart TV, or speakers

Move on to these methods if you think AirPlay isn't working because of your TV or speakers:

Make sure device is on and connected to Wi-Fi

It happens to the best of us. Make sure the device that you're streaming to is actually turned on and that it's connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the device you're streaming from.

Update Apple TV

If you're streaming audio from an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, you need tvOS 11.4 or later. This also applies if you're streaming to Apple TV.

Restart device

When in doubt, turn it off and on again. 

Troubleshooting your Wi-Fi router

Finally, if you think your Wi-Fi is the issue, check the following:

Update router firmware

Check your router to see if it needs a firmware update. Many modern routers are easy to update via a mobile app; if your router is older, you might need to log into its web console (see the router's user guide for details).

How to Fix AirPlay When It's Not Working

Apple AirPlay is incredibly handy, but sometimes it can be quirky. So, if you're facing issues, try our helpful tips to fix AirPlay on your device.

Apple's handy AirPlay feature can sometimes be quirky. And if that's your current experience, you're lucky we're here to help.

There are many reasons AirPlay won't stream audio or video content from your devices. Sometimes, it could result from a faulty internet connection. Other times, your Apple device won't properly send content to the desired destination.

Regardless, you can fix most AirPlay issues using some easy and quick methods. Below, we'll look at all the possible ways to fix AirPlay when it's not working.

1. Check the Minimum Requirements for AirPlay

AirPlay doesn't work on all devices, so you first need to check if the AirPlay sender (the device used to stream content) meets the minimum system requirements for AirPlay.

AirPlay audio from:

• iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 11.4 or later
• Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K running tvOS 11.4 or later
• HomePod or HomePod mini running iOS 11.4 or later
• Mac with iTunes 12.8 or later or macOS Catalina 10.15 or later
• Windows PC with iTunes 12.8 or later

AirPlay video from:

• iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 12.3 or later
• Mac running macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or later

The AirPlay receiver (the device you're streaming content to) must support the feature, too.

To confirm a third-party device like a smart TV supports the AirPlay feature, look for an AirPlay-enabled label on the packaging.

2. Adjust AirPlay Receiver Settings in macOS

Modern Macs running macOS Monterey or later can double as an AirPlay receiver . This makes it possible to AirPlay content from another device to your Mac and even share a Mac's screen via AirPlay, provided the AirPlay Receiver setting is turned on, as discussed below.

To protect your privacy, only devices that use the same Apple ID as your computer are permitted to AirPlay content to your Mac. To change that, venture into System Settings > General > AirDrop & HandOff and turn on the AirPlay Receiver setting on the right.

Now, even devices that don't use the same Apple ID as your Mac can AirPlay to it. To permit any nearby devices to see your Mac as an AirPlay receiver, click Allow AirPlay for , choose Everyone from the menu, and then click the Allow Everyone button.

You can also let new devices AirPlay to your Mac without password verification by turning off the Require password option.

Apple recommends using an iPhone 7 or later and at least a 2018 Mac for an ideal experience. However, you can still use AirPlay on older devices at a lower video resolution. For example, we could AirPlay from an iPhone 6s, which isn't on Apple's compatibility list.

3. Wake Devices and Keep Them Close

If it wasn't clear enough, remember that all your devices must be turned on and unlocked to use AirPlay. When using AirPlay on your Apple TV, ensure the device isn't in sleep mode by clicking the remote to wake it from sleep.

Since AirPlay typically relies on peer-to-peer discovery, bring them as close to each other as possible to increase the connection strength.

4. Enable Screen Mirroring in the Menu Bar

When your Mac detects an AirPlay receiver on the network, it shows up under the Screen Mirroring icon in the menu bar. If no icon is visible, go to System Settings > Control Center , click the menu next to Screen Mirroring , and select Always Show in Menu Bar .

Now, you can quickly start or stop AirPlay, mirror your Mac's screen, or use a nearby iPad as a second display—all from the menu bar.

5. Disable Automatic AirPlay to TVs

An iPhone or iPad may automatically AirPlay content to your Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible smart TV every time you use the feature. To stop that from happening, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff > Automatically AirPlay and choose Never .

Doing so shall stop your iPhone from automatically connecting to a nearby AirPlay receiver like your Apple TV whenever you want to cast something on your Mac.

6. Turn Off Airplane Mode

Enabling Airplane Mode on an iPhone or iPad turns off all wireless radios except Bluetooth. AirPlay requires both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so you'll need to quit Airplane Mode to use AirPlay.

Open the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad by swiping down from the top-right corner, then touch a little airplane icon to toggle Airplane Mode. Alternatively, go to Settings > Airplane Mode to turn the feature on or off.

7. Switch on Bluetooth

Bluetooth must be enabled on both ends to allow the sender and receiver to discover each other. You can turn on Bluetooth on an iPhone and iPad in a couple of ways.

One way is to pull down from the top-right corner and enable the Bluetooth toggle in the Control Center. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone and use the toggle to disable the feature.

8. Use the Same Wi-Fi Network

Peer-to-peer AirPlay lets AirPlay work even if the devices aren't on the same Wi-Fi network or any network for that matter. If peer-to-peer discovery isn't working for you, you should ensure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network for best results.

To check what network you're currently using on your iOS or iPadOS device, visit Settings > Wi-Fi to view the current network name.

To check the Wi-Fi network you're connected to on macOS, click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar or go to System Settings > Wi-Fi .

In case of any problems, we recommend checking our tips for when your Mac won't connect to Wi-Fi . Apple TV users can check their current network in the Settings > Network menu.

If your Apple TV uses an Ethernet connection, be sure to connect it to the same router that creates your home's Wi-Fi connection.

9. Restart Your Devices

Sometimes, the best solution is to restart all the devices you wish to use with AirPlay. On iOS and iPadOS, choose Settings > General > Shut Down . On tvOS, select Settings > System > Restart . To restart your Mac, click the Apple menu and choose Restart .

10. Reboot Your Router

Among the reasons AirPlay cannot stream your content could be an issue with your router. It might be that your router is restricting content due to a minor problem with its firmware. In most cases, you can fix connection issues by turning a router off and back on .

11. Tweak Your Firewall Settings in macOS

If your AirPlay issue is Mac-specific, chances are that the firewall is using a rule that blocks the AirPlay connection. Luckily, you can modify the macOS firewall options in a few clicks.

Head over to System Settings > Network and click Firewall on the right. Next, click Options below the Firewall toggle if it's enabled. Now, turn off the Block all incoming connections switch at the top and enable the option labeled Automatically allow downloaded signed software to receive incoming connections .

Lastly, click OK to save your changes.

12. Update Your Devices to the Latest Software

All AirPlay devices should be using the latest software version available for them. You can check out the following tutorials that walk you through the update process.

Other Options for Connecting Apple Devices

It can be frustrating when AirPlay stops functioning when you need it most. Trying out the tips outlined above should fix your AirPlay woes. If not, it's probably time to contact Apple Support.

AirPlay isn't the only way to connect your iPhone or iPad to a smart TV. You should explore other ways to cast content to a TV whenever AirPlay doesn't work for one reason or another.

How to fix AirPlay not working between iPhone, iPad, and Mac

One of the best new features of macOS Monterey is AirPlay to Mac. It lets you AirPlay directly from your iPhone, iPad, or other Mac to a Mac running macOS Monterey. Usually, the entire process is easy and happens without hiccups. But if you cannot AirPlay to Mac, your Mac doesn’t show up as an AirPlay target, or if video, photos, audio, or screen do not project from iPhone to the Mac, here are the solutions to fix that.

1. Check device compatibility for AirPlay

Source device :

Apple says  AirPlay to Mac works best with iPhone 7 and above running iOS 14 or later. In my testing, I could AirPlay from iPhone 6S+ as well. But depending on the iOS version, the experience may vary.

Destination Mac :

If you have a Mac from 2018 or later running macOS Monterey, you should be able to AirPlay to it from iPhone, iPad, or even an older Mac.

Note : The visual quality will be poor when you try to AirPlay from an old Mac or some other old device to a Mac on macOS Monterey.

2. Make sure AirPlay to Mac is enabled

Out of the box, this feature is enabled on macOS Monterey. But since you are not able to AirPlay from iPhone to Mac, make sure things are in order.

1) Click the Apple menu  and go to System Preferences .

2) Click Sharing .

3) Make sure AirPlay Receiver is ticked.

3. Set the correct AirPlay visibility on Mac

In AirPlay Receiver settings (System Preferences > Sharing), make sure you have enabled the correct option. This will ensure your Mac is visible and available as an AirPlay destination on other iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Here are three AirPlay visibility settings you can choose from:

1 . Current user : Choose this if you only want to AirPlay from your Apple devices. Your Apple devices mean those devices with the same Apple ID as your Mac on Monterey. See, if needed: How to find and know your Apple ID on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

2 . Anyone on the same network : If you also wish to allow your family members or office colleagues to AirPlay from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to yours, choose this. It lets every nearby person on the same Wi-Fi network see your Mac as an available AirPlay target.

3 . Everyone : Choose this if you want anyone nearby to see your Mac as an AirPlay target device.

For most people, the first two options do the job. But depending on your situation, choose the right one. Rest assured, when someone tries to AirPlay to your Mac, you have the final say. You can click Accept or Decline.

4. Turn off AirPlay password

Is “ Require password ” checked under AirPlay Receiver preferences? If yes, uncheck it and see if it fixes your issue or not.

5. Make sure you allow the AirPlay request

When you try to AirPlay to Mac, you may see a popup in the top-right corner. This stays only for a few seconds. So, make sure you click Accept soon. If it disappears, send a new AirPlay request to Mac from iPhone, iPad, or other Mac.

6. Ensure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled

For a smooth AirPlay to Mac experience, make sure the Mac (target) and the iPhone (source) are on the same Wi-Fi (or as per the settings you choose above).

If you’re AirPlaying from your iPhone or iPad, just keeping Wi-Fi enabled should do the job. It isn’t compulsory to stay connected to the same network. But to AirPlay from your one Mac to another Mac, make sure they are on the same network.

If your friend is trying to AirPlay to your Mac, ask them to be on the same Wi-Fi as the Mac. Or, select Everyone in AirPlay receiver settings. ( explained above )

7. Keep both AirPlay source and target devices nearby

For AirPlay to work, the devices must be near. Now, this doesn’t mean you have to be a few inches apart. But as a general rule, try to keep the iPhone and the Mac in the same room or something similar.

8. Keep the Mac awake

You may not see your Mac as an AirPlay display or speaker if its screen is off, the computer is locked by a passcode, or the MacBook’s lid is closed. So, for AirPlay to work, make sure you’re on Mac’s desktop.

9. Restart your devices and the Wi-Fi router

While writing the original AirPlay to Mac tutorial, I spent several hours trying all combinations. At least two or three times, I encountered AirPlay not working or stopping working between my iPhone and Mac.

Thankfully, just restarting the iPhone fixed the AirPlay failure, and one time I had to restart both the Mac and the iPhone. Make sure you do the same to solve AirPlay issues.

If the problem continues, restart your home’s Wi-Fi router as well.

10. Add AirPlay icon to Mac’s menu bar

When AirPlay options are available, you should see its icon in Mac’s menu bar by default.

But in case you’re trying to AirPlay from one Mac running an old version of macOS to another running macOS Monterey, and you don’t see the icon, you can enable it manually.

Once you show the AirPlay icon on the menu bar of the source Mac, you get easy controls to stop AirPlay, mirror its screen, use the other Mac as a second display, etc.

On macOS Catalina and earlier, go to System Preferences > Displays . From here, check the box for “ Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available .”

On macOS Big Sur and later, go to System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar > Screen Mirroring > make sure Show in Menu Bar is checked, and from the dropdown menu, choose always . You may turn it off later, if desired).

11. Choose the correct Mac

If you own more than one Mac, make sure you choose the correct one. Usually, if your Mac’s name is something simple like YourName or MacBook or Unknown , you may be tapping the incorrect name.

So, give a unique name to your Mac , and then make sure to select it when trying to AirPlay from iPhone or iPad.

12. Update your Mac and iPhone

In case you aren’t on the latest versions of iOS 14, iOS 15, or macOS Monterey, consider updating. Doing this will ensure all potential bugs are fixed, and you have a superior experience with your Apple devices.

• To update your iPhone to iPad, open Settings app > General > Software Update .
• To update your Mac, click the Apple menu  > System Preferences > Software Update .

13. Turn off Firewall

Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall .

If it’s enabled, ensure Block incoming connections isn’t checked. Next, make sure Automatically allow built-in software to receive incoming connections is enabled. You can also turn off the Firewall completely.

Once that’s done, AirPlay should work fine. If not, restart your Mac and try to AirPlay again.

What to do if you don’t hear audio during AirPlay or music/video stops?

Do you notice the audio or video stops after you get AirPlay to work between your iPhone and Mac? To fix this, make sure you don’t exit the app on your iPhone or iPad from where you are playing the media. For example, do not quit the YouTube app.

Similarly, while AirPlaying images and videos from the iOS Photos app, you can navigate inside the Photos app. But if you swipe up or press the Home button to go out of the Photos app, AirPlay will stop.

Secondly, make sure the audio level on both devices (iPhone and the Mac) are turned up. Finally, look at the left edge of your iPhone and ensure it isn’t set to silent mode. If it is, the ring switch will be pushed down, exposing an orange line. Push it back up.

AirPlay to Mac problems fixed

After following one or a few of the solutions above, you should have no trouble trying to AirPlay to your Mac running macOS Monterey and later. In case the problem persists, you can try resetting network settings on your iPhone or iPad.

What Is AirPlay?

The Apple AirPlay feature uses Wi-Fi to share audio, video, photos, and device screens to other AirPlay compatible devices, and you can use AirPlay 2 from the Control Center on your iPhone . How Does AirPlay Work?

For AirPlay to work, your devices need to be near each other and turned on. If you are trying to AirPlay to your Apple TV, make sure your device is awake and not in Sleep mode. It is impossible to enjoy AirPlay and Apple TV mirroring without the internet unless you use peer-to-peer AirPlay.

AirPlay does not support all media types, which may result in an error message that says "video format not supported." It isn't entirely clear what the AirPlay unsupported video formats are, and sometimes a quick device restart can fix it.

Do keep in mind that some streaming services, such as Netflix, have discontinued the ability to use AirPlay for video quality reasons. Attempting to do it anyway may result in this error message. Also, make sure you're only trying to stream from one device at a time.

Check for AirPlay Device Compatibility

To quickly check that you have AirPlay on your iPhone:

Check for Apple Software Updates on All Devices

Restart Your Apple Devices

If your devices are on and the software is updated, the next step is to do a quick restart. Make Sure Bluetooth Is Working

Check Your Wi-Fi Networks

Although Apple says that you should make sure that your Bluetooth is on, AirPlay works over Wi-Fi. To AirPlay between devices, connect both to the same Wi-Fi network. If you notice that one of them is signed into a different network, sign out and connect to the correct one. • Turn Wi-F off  and on again.
• Reboot your Wi-Fi router.
• Check with your internet service provider to make sure that your router's firmware is up to date.

If screen mirroring or streaming isn’t working on your AirPlay-compatible device

Find out what to do if you can’t stream content with AirPlay, mirror the screen on your iOS device or Mac to your Apple TV or smart TV, or you’re experiencing another issue when using AirPlay.

Try following these steps first

After each step, see if you still need help.

Make sure your AirPlay-compatible devices are turned on and near each other.

Check that the devices are updated to the latest software and are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Restart the devices you want to use with AirPlay or screen mirroring.

If you’re asked to enter a password on your Apple TV, check your Apple TV access restrictions . Alternatively, you may need to adjust your AirPlay password settings .

If your music unexpectedly stops

If your music stops playing unexpectedly, use your device or Siri to start playing music again. In some situations, the Home app may be using your HomePod,* Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible speaker as the main audio source for streaming music (even if your HomePod or Apple TV isn’t currently playing music). Using Siri on that device or performing another task may cause playback to stop everywhere. You can also use an iOS device or computer with iTunes as an audio source to manually stream music instead.

If you can see video but can’t hear audio

If you can’t hear audio when you’re streaming videos from your iOS device or Mac to your Apple TV, make sure the volume is turned up and not muted on both your iOS device and your television or receiver.

6 Best Fixes for AirPlay Not Working on Apple TV

Like Chromecast, you can stream content from your Apple device to your TV using the AirPlay feature. You can use AirPlay on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to play any media or mirror your device’s screen on your TV.

But if you have been facing any problems with using AirPlay on your Apple TV or Apple TV 4K, here are some solutions to help you fix AirPlay not working on Apple TV. These solutions are also applicable to Apple TV 4K.

Apple TV 4K

1. ensure same wi-fi network connectivity.

For AirPlay to work at all, the first pre-requisite is to connect all your Apple devices to the same Wi-Fi network. So you’ll need to ensure the same Wi-Fi network connectivity your Apple TV and other Apple devices.

Step 1: Open Settings on your Apple TV.

Step 2: Scroll down and select Network.

You will the Wi-Fi network your Apple TV uses.

Check Wi-Fi Network on iPhone and iPad

The steps remain the same for iPhone and iPad users.

Step 1: Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

Step 2: Tap on Wi-Fi.

Ensure that your connected Wi-Fi network is the same as that on your Apple TV.

Check Wi-Fi Network on Mac

Step 1: Press Command + Spacebar keyboard shortcut to open Spotlight Search, type System Settings, and press Return.

Step 2 : Click on Wi-Fi from the left menu.

2. Check for Same Apple ID

The next basic solution if your Apple TV is not working with AirPlay is to ensure that all your devices have been connected to the same Apple ID. You can directly check on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac the list of all the devices signed in to your Apple account. In case you don’t see your Apple TV, you know what to do.

Check Apple ID on iPhone or iPad

Step 1 : Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad. The steps remain the same for both platforms.

Step 2 : Tap on your profile name at the top.

Step 3: Scroll down and check the list of devices using your Apple ID.

Step 2: Click on your profile name at the top-left corner.

3. Check AirPlay Access Settings on Apple TV

If you are still facing issues with using AirPlay on your Apple TV, we suggest taking a look at its AirPlay settings. Here’s how.

Step 2: Select AirPlay and HomeKit from the list of options.

Step 3: Check if AirPlay has been turned on. If not, select AirPlay to enable it.

Step 4: Select Allow Access.

Step 5: Ensure that access has been allowed to your Apple devices on the same network.

Step 6: After that, close Settings and check if the problem is solved.

4. Check AirPlay Settings on Your Apple Devices

Just like on your Apple TV, you should check the AirPlay settings on your other Apple devices as well. Your iPhone, iPad, and Mac should be allowed to share screen and play media on Apple TV.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap on General.

Step 3: Tap on AirPlay and Handoff.

Step 4: Select Automatically AirPlay to TVs.

Step 5: Select Automatic.

Step 6: Close Settings and check if the problem is solved.

Check on Mac

Step 2: Click on General from the left menu.

Step 3: Click on AirPlay and Handoff.

Step 4: Select the drop-down menu next to Allow AirPlay For.

Step 5: Select your preferred setting. We are using Current User.

5. Update Software on All Apple Devices

If none of the solutions have worked for you, the last resort is to update the software version on all your devices. We recommend updating your Apple TV and your other Apple devices.

Step 2: Scroll down and select System.

Step 3: Select Software Updates.

Step 4: Select Update Software.

Step 5: If an update is available, download and install it.

Update iPhone or iPad

Step 2: Tap on General.

Step 3: Select Software Update.

AirPlay issues on Roku can come from many sources depending on the problem, from network problems to temporary glitches on Roku and much more.

So, while it may be tough to understand why something went wrong with AirPlay on Roku, there are approachable fixes you can try out to see if they fix your issue.

Restart your Roku . While simple, a restart can solve a wide variety of temporary issues, so it's a good first start for fixes. Make sure to wait a few seconds when it's powered down before turning it back on.

Restart your router and modem . AirPlay relies on Wi-Fi, so if you're having network connectivity issues, this might be the reason why your AirPlay isn't working with your Roku. Restarting your router and modem is a good way to fix temporary issues with your home network.

AirPlay is a Wi-Fi-based technology, so it's essential your network is up and running, both devices have Wi-Fi enabled, and are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If you're attempting to mirror your screen using AirPlay on Roku, make sure screen mirroring is set up correctly . This process only takes a few steps, and if that was the issue, mirroring should begin working immediately after set up.

Follow Apple Support's suggested first steps for addressing AirPlay issues . Apple suggests you make sure your AirPlay devices are in range of each other, check both devices are updated to their latest version, and restart both devices.

Sometimes, software updates can introduce bugs which breaks certain features, but by keeping up-to-date you can be sure to have all the latest fixes out there, minimizing the chance of future problems occurring.

Reset your Roku . While serious-sounding, and best as a last resort, resetting your Roku can fix any number of problems in the actual Roku system's software itself. There's not much major to worry about resetting your Roku, but you will have to go through and pick your settings again.

Contact Roku support or contact Apple support. While unlikely, there's a chance you are encountering a unique problem with your specific device. By contacting a representative from either company you can be sure to find out if there's something defective or if there's another fix to your issue.

Go to Settings > System > Fast TV start > and select Enable Fast TV Start to allow your TV to turn on quickly from standby mode when you use AirPlay . Ensure AirPlay is on from Settings > AirPlay and HomeKit > AirPlay . To set your AirPlay code preferences or reset paired devices, select Require Code and choose a different option.

To AirPlay from your iPhone to a compatible TV , open Control Center > tap the AirPlay icon on your phone > and select your Roku TV. If prompted, enter the AirPlay code that appears on your TV. You can follow a similar process to AirPlay from a Mac to a TV .

Before his players returned to the building, Jeff Rodgers wanted a visual of what the NFL's new kickoff rules would look like on the field. So he used the bodies available.

Inside the Cardinals' practice bubble, coaches, personnel men and other football people lined up to walk through the drastic special teams change – including head coach Jonathan Gannon.

"We've been repping it out there," Gannon said in the days after. "I've been 'R5.' It'll be an exciting play, hopefully for the betterment of the game. We've got to make it an advantage for us.

"I thought I made every tackle, (Rodgers) said maybe not."

The players have finally, in Phase Two, been able to line up themselves on the field, a couple weeks after Rodgers introduced the rules – complete with the bubble video – in a meeting. The new rule, a one-year trial approved at March's owners meetings, is at once supposed to goose kickoff return numbers while also increasing safety during the play.

"This rule has been written unlike any other rule has been written in the NFL," Rodgers said, who added that the rule has already undergone some tweaks since the first version was passed in Orlando.

It's an offshoot of what the XFL had, but Rodgers said there are enough differences that he didn't think that showing his players XFL examples would help in the transition. For the NFL, everyone but the kicker and return man (or men) must hold their position five yards apart at the return team's 40 and 35, respectively. The kicker still boots the ball from his own 35, but no one can move until the ball is touched or it hits the ground in the "landing zone" between the goal line and the 20. Touchbacks will come out to the 30; if a kicker fails to get it to the landing zone, it's the 35.

Onsides kicks are now moot until the fourth quarter, when a team can try a maximum of two and must declare that is what they are doing to be able to line up in the "old" way for a kickoff.

"There are things you are going to have to coach that you haven't coached before," Rodgers said, for instance, how the blockers up front start the play – looking back at the ball waiting for it to be touched, knowing the coverage team is five yards away, or just watching the coverage team until they move.

The NFL is expecting actual kickoff returns, which had dwindled to about 22 percent of the time, to jump to around 60 percent of the time – or 1,500 more live plays per NFL season.

Finding time to teach the players in during offseason work, or even training camp practices, will be on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

"It's not like the CBA is going to say, 'Hey, because we have a new rules, here is 20 more minutes,'" Rodgers said.

The work isn't just about finding time on the field. Rodgers said in previous years, he'd spend about 10 to 15 percent of his time on kickoffs and kickoff return. That is now about 60 percent of his time. It wasn't worth prepping beforehand because a kickoff change had been hinted at many times with ultimately nothing passed by owners, and Rodgers didn't want to waste time for something that wasn't going to pass.

"I told someone the other day, it's like you're running the spread offense and all of a sudden you're running the wishbone," Rodgers said. "It's still blocking, tackling, angles, ball security, all those things still exist, but the setup is different."

Rodgers understands the need for a change; at the owners meetings, it was made clear that the kickoff was in danger of being legislated out of the game without a drastic evolution.

Kicker Matt Prater knows it'll take some work; the need for the ball to carry over the two lines of tacklers/blockers and drop into the landing zone without reaching the end zone will take touch.

"It'll kind of be trial and error," Prater said. "Since I've been playing kickoffs have always been rip it and rip it, so now it'll be a little more strategic."

"Hopefully," he added, "I won't be involved in too many tackles."

Rodgers is in favor of the new rules, knowing both the future risk to the play and the need for increased safety.

And Gannon, his own coverage techniques aside, just wants to adapt his team so the Cardinals make it work.

"When the forward pass was invented, people ran with it and (some) people didn't," Gannon said. "We've got to make it an advantage."

Ten traded players who will have biggest impact on 2024 NFL season

Over the past three offseasons, the NFL trade market has included movement by at least one marquee quarterback. That wasn't true this year -- but the list of traded players with the best chance to impact the upcoming season is still heavily influenced by the position.

The top three players in my list below are there not just because they are good players, but because they can help their quarterbacks play better, thus having a big effect on the fate of their franchises and, basically, the league. Only one person who actually throws the ball for a living made the cut, but as is true of everything in the NFL, QB loomed large in my mind when I was going through this exercise.

This is a good place to explain briefly that I wasn't just trying to predict which traded player would perform best on an individual level during the 2024 NFL season, but rather who has the chance to really change how things play out going forward. I also factored in some projection here, thinking about what could happen, in addition to what seems most likely -- because that just feels like the right thing to do in May.

So, you're an aspiring AFC power and you want to help your young QB cement his place among the NFL's A-listers? Get Diggs. His name might not carry as much of a kick as it did in 2020, when he joined the Bills via trade to supercharge their offense. He'll turn 31 in November, and it seemed like he closed out his Bills tenure with more drama than production (42.2 receiving yards per game over his final 10 games, including playoffs). But he still ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in catches (107, seventh) and receiving scores (eight, tied for eighth), and he won't have to shoulder the load in Houston, where Nico Collins , Tank Dell and tight end Dalton Schultz helped drive a top-10 passing game last season (and where new running back Joe Mixon could angle for retrospective inclusion on this list). In other words, when Diggs doesn't get the ball, his presence should create opportunities for others. When he does get the ball, he should be able to do more with it than he did in 2023, when he put up the third-lowest per-catch mark (11.1 yards) of his career. The messiness in Buffalo aside, Diggs accelerated Josh Allen 's journey into stardom. If he can help reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud take another step, he'll have played a role in shaping the landscape of NFL contenders for a second time.

2024 NFL Draft: Ten rookies in the best situations to succeed in Year 1 and beyond

Let's forget about typical metrics of production for a second and think about Allen's most important job, a duty that he'll share with basically everyone in Chicago (including fellow trade acquisition Ryan Bates ): helping Caleb Williams end decades of quarterbacking futility for the Bears. Allen is the most veteran member of Williams' stacked supporting cast, and as one of just six NFL players to log 150-plus receptions and a catch rate of 72% or better over the past two seasons, he's a very dependable target. I didn't love seeing an anonymous executive muse in " The Athletic " about how Williams' playing style might not allow him to operate quickly enough for Allen's liking. Allen's age (32) and injury history (he's missed 11 games over the past two years) also give me pause. Still, it's possible to envision a scenario where he's one of Williams' safest security blankets in this critical season. Allen could help change the story of pro football in Chicago forever -- and that's good enough for at least a top-two spot in this ranking.

The Browns need Deshaun Watson to play like one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, and that is more likely to happen if they can establish another legitimate pass-catching option beyond Amari Cooper and tight end David Njoku . Given their longstanding difficulty drafting receivers -- Josh Gordon, Braylon Edwards and Kevin Johnson are the only homegrown receivers to crack 1,000 yards for Cleveland in a season since 1999 -- it made sense to return to the trade market, which netted them Cooper two years ago. I'm sure Cleveland would love for Jeudy to finally, truly break out after handing him a three-year extension worth up to $58 million this offseason. But he doesn't have to do it in 2024. He just has to bring enough big-play ability (he's averaged 14.5 yards per catch in his four-year career) for the Browns' offense to be viable, as they attempt to make back-to-back trips to the playoffs for the first time since 1989.

I thought about slotting Burns at the top of this list, and maybe I should have. Of everyone in my top 10, he seems like the safest lock to play like a star for his new team in 2024. Unlike Allen and Diggs, the 26-year-old is still squarely in his prime, and unlike Jeudy, he's a proven entity with a high floor. Burns has had a double-digit pressure rate every year of his career, and he should team with Kayvon Thibodeaux to boost a defense that finished 30th in pressure rate last season. The problem is, I could see Burns wrecking opponents this season and the Giants still stumbling because of offensive limitations. So, perhaps unfairly, he lands here, capped, in a way, by the lingering uncertainty around what Daniel Jones will bring to the table.

• TRADED FOR: 2024 seventh-round pick, 2025 third-round pick (with Kansas City receiving a 2024 seventh-round pick)

I like how aggressively GM Ran Carthon has attacked the Titans' roster. Even if the Texans run away with the AFC South (which is far from a sure thing), it's not outlandish to think Tennessee could hang with the Colts and Jaguars in the division and other bubble teams in the wild-card race, especially if free-agent swings on WR Calvin Ridley , RB Tony Pollard , WR Tyler Boyd , C Lloyd Cushenberry , LB Kenneth Murray and CB Chidobe Awuzie pay off. Tennessee's defense finished in the middle of the pack in 2023 (16th in points, 18th in yards allowed and 18th against the pass), and that was thanks in large part to previous Carthon imports Azeez Al-Shaair and Sean Murphy-Bunting , who contributed heavily on one-year deals before cashing in elsewhere this offseason. That said, the Titans tied for 27th in passer rating allowed (96.4) and registered the worst point differential (-62) in the division. If Sneed can help tighten those numbers at all, this team should be more competitive in more games, and that could put Tennessee on the fringes of contention.

Let's not overcomplicate this one. Reddick is a pass-rushing mercenary, having compiled 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons while playing for three different teams (Arizona in 2020, Carolina in 2021, Philadelphia in 2022-23). The Jets needed a pass rusher after losing Bryce Huff , their sacks leader in 2023, to the Eagles in free agency. There's been plenty of turmoil in New York, but the defense -- which ranked third overall and fifth in pressure rate last season -- has been strong. It's in everyone's best interests for that to remain true as we wait to see if Aaron Rodgers , coming off an Achilles tear at age 40, can lift an offense that has finished 25th or worse in each of the past eight seasons. While another traded player, new offensive tackle Morgan Moses , will obviously have an important role there, plug-and-play sack production from Reddick should help keep things humming along on D.

It was only two years ago that Davis commanded an extension from the Bucs. It's true that he failed to reach double-digits in passes defensed last season (nine) for the first time since 2018, and Pro Football Focus gave him the worst defensive grade (58.2) of his career. He also missed significant time with injury. But Davis is still just 27, and it wouldn't be surprising if the self-described " lockdown corner " helped rookies Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. boost a Lions pass defense that ranked 27th in 2023.

Here's another relatively straightforward use of the trade market to fill a roster hole created by offseason player movement. San Francisco released defensive lineman Arik Armstead and allowed Sebastian Joseph and Javon Kinlaw to walk. In exchange for a seventh-round pick, the Niners scooped up Collins, who matched a career high last season with five sacks for Houston -- exactly the same number that Armstead put up in his final year with the Niners. If Collins provides strong value while counting for far less against the cap ( $8.5 million ) than Armstead was going to ($28.4 million) in 2024, and helps a San Francisco defense that ranked eighth last season continue to play well, you can expect to hear plenty about the savviness of this move as the season wears on.

• TRADED FOR: CB Donte Jackson , 2024 sixth-round pick (with Pittsburgh receiving a 2024 seventh-round pick)

Trading for Johnson was a reasonable dice roll for the Panthers, who need as much help as they can get for second-year quarterback Bryce Young . If the veteran flames out in the final year of his contract, then Carolina can move on (and I'll regret not using this spot on an offensive lineman like Morgan Moses or Ryan Bates ). Perhaps, though, the Panthers can get more out of Johnson, whose low yardage total last season (717) and unfortunate penchant for being in drama-tinged headlines shouldn’t obscure the respectable per-catch mark (14.1) he managed to put up while working with Kenny Pickett , Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky in 2023. In the best-case scenario, Johnson revitalizes his own prospects while playing a role in saving the career of a potential franchise quarterback.

None of the quarterbacks traded this offseason are guaranteed to start a single game in the near future, but I wanted to write about at least one of them. Fields seems like the one who is most likely to impact the 2024 season. Even if he doesn't get on the field, he could push Russell Wilson into playing like a winner again in Pittsburgh. And if Fields earns the QB1 job outright, he'll have a chance to show how his skill set translates to wins for a legitimate playoff contender, which he hasn't had the opportunity to do yet in the NFL.

AirPlay not working on certain websites

I've been using AirPlay for a while, mirroring programs from my iPhone X to my 50" Smart TV. One site shows the icon to press on it (see below) and is working fine, but its sister site, when clicking that icon, it reverts back to the AirPlay screen on the TV, while on my iPhone, at the bottom of the screen playing the program, that (blue) icon keeps blinking slowly . It stubbornly refuses to mirror the program on my tv.

I was trying to contact the site's tech support but can't get them to respond.

Any ideas here? Thanks!

Also, BTW, what's the difference between the 2 AirPlay icons the one below and the one with the 3 circles above the triangle?

• AirPlay doesn't work with Apple TV home hub enabled I haven't been able to use AirPlay from my iPhone to Apple TV for the past 3-4 months. Actually, no AirPlay devices in the house work (Apple and 3rd party). When I use a media application, such as YouTube and attempt to cast a video via AirPlay, the play/pause button appears to be unresponsive. Nothing plays. Screen mirroring works, but when full-screen videos attempt to handoff, videos never actually play. After extensive troubleshooting (restarts, updates, restarting network equipment, toggling AirPlay on and off, etc.), I found that disabling Home Hub fixes AirPlay (which breaks my automations, as I don't have another hub). For whatever reason, disabling home hub also fixes non-Apple AirPlay connections (such as smart TVs with built-in AirPlay). Has anyone else experience this? What steps am I missing? 570 2
• Differences in AirPlay Screen Mirroring Icons? What are the differences in icons between the Apple TV (Airplay) devices vs. the simple 'display' icon in the Screen Mirroring menu (underlined in red in the screenshot)? We have multiple Apple TV and AirPlay-capable TVs. One TV, in particular, shows up as a different icon, and we have a significant lagging issue mirroring this specific TV from iPhone, iPad or Mac. No issue with Miracasting from Windows/Androids. What's odd is that we have the same TV model in adjacent rooms, and they show up with Apple TV icons and not 'display' icons, and have no issues mirroring from Apple devices. I'm curious to know the differences in icons, and hopefully I can narrow down the issue before deciding to factory reset the TV. 470 3

If the issue persists on particular websites, then reaching out to the website's tech support would be the next step as it sounds like you've tried to do.

The difference in regard to the icons, the one pictured in your post is for screen mirroring and the one with the 3 circles is for streaming audio only. Check out this article for more details:

I understand the instructions, yet this particular site uses the icon to connect, but it doesn't connect (as I described originally, once pushed, the icon is colored blue and very slowly blinking).

But now, suddenly, I have my second set, a new 32" Vizio Smart TV dropped out from the list on my iPhone. I used the AirPlay setting on the TV, it showed a QR code which I tried scanning on my iPhone, but the message I got at the top of the iPhone screen says:
