The Ultimate Guide to visiting the Royal Opera House
Royal opera house ultimate guide.
Many visitors in London venture to Covent Garden to shop, dine or watch street performers in the dazzling Covent Garden Piazza. But opera, ballet and classical music lovers head to Covent Garden for one reason and one reason only: To see a performance at the Royal Opera House.
Built in 1858, the current Royal Opera House is actually the third to be built at its location on Bow Street, as both of the previous theatres were destroyed by fires in 1808 and 1856.
The original venue was constructed in 1732 (when it was known as the Theatre Royal), and was originally designed to be a playhouse. However, over the years the venue expanded into the world-renowned arts venue that it is known as today, and has attracted some of the biggest names in classical and opera music.
Royal Opera House Highlights
Immediately upon entering the Covent Garden Piazza, visitors will be greeted with the massive iron and glass structure known as The Paul Hamlyn Hall (or “The Floral Hall”) which has direct access to the main opera building. This area also boasts a champagne bar and restaurant, so concertgoers can sip on a glass of champagne or have a quick meal before watching a performance.
Besides being blown away by a ballet, opera or orchestra performance, visitors can also choose from two different tours if they want to learn more about this fascinating London venue:
- The Backstage Tour – (1.5 hours) which includes visits to both the backstage and Front of House areas as the actors prepare for the evening performances. The tour also covers the history of the venue, its current productions, and may even include the rare opportunity to see the Royal Ballet in a classroom (however this is not always guaranteed).
- The Velvet, Gilt and Glamour Tour (45 minutes) where visitors can learn more about the venue’s architecture and history, and even hear stories from some of the many famous opera singers who once performed at the Royal Opera House. Visitors will also be led to the Royal Retiring Room, which is still used by members of the royal family today.
Special Tips
Getting There
Visiting royal opera house.
To find out which performances are taking place at the Royal Opera House during your visit to London, visit the “What’s On” section on their official website.
During the day, the Royal Opera House is open to the general public as well as anyone who has pre-booked a guided tour, however only ticket-holders will be allowed in during performances.
Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before each performance starts, as latecomers will not be allowed into the venue. There will be announcements alerting all concertgoers at least three times before each performance starts.
There are two bars and three different restaurants located inside the Royal Opera House, all of which open 90 minutes before the start of each performance, as well as during intervals. Please note that any food or drink is not allowed in the auditorium.
For those with mobility issues, there is lift access to all the levels of the main auditorium (except the Orchestra Stalls). If you are watching a performance with your family, children between the ages of five and 14 must be seated next to an adult, and babies and infants will not be allowed into the auditorium.
The use of cameras as well as recording equipment inside the venue is strictly prohibited. There are free cloakroom facilities, but be aware that space is extremely limited so try to avoid bringing large items with you during your visit. All visitors may be searched upon entering the venue, and all large bags and rucksacks must be placed in the cloakroom.

By Palace of Versailles
The Royal Opera House
Almost a century of studies and research went into the Royal Opera House before it was finished. In 1768, Louis XV ordered the works to begin, in anticipation of his grand children's weddings.
Architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel built a room in the shape of a cut-off oval. The simple balconies are staggered, improving acoustics and vision. There are no blind spots and being made entirely of wood, the room resonates like a violin.

The King's private box
The room was inaugurated on 16 May 1770, the day of the marriage between the Dauphin and Archduchess Marie-Antoinette. At around 12.30, the couple entered the crowded Royal Chapel.
They were given gifts, the ambassadors were welcomed, the King’s Game was played in the Hall of Mirrors followed by a feast held at the Royal Table in the Opera House.
The King's private box Palace of Versailles
The royal box was fitted with a grille at the request of Louis XV, who wanted to attend performances as discreetly as possible. During festivities, he nonetheless sat in the amphitheatre below the box. The box with its grille was built in the planned location of a big ceremonial canopy.
The stage Palace of Versailles
The surround opens onto a 740 square metre stage, an exceptional size for a court theatre at that period. Until the Palais Garnier was built in Paris in 1875, the Royal Opera House contained one of the biggest stages in Europe.
A formal grand ball was held on 19 May 1770 at the Royal Opera House to close the wedding celebrations of the future King Louis XVI. The Opera House was transformed into a ballroom by way of an ingenious device designed by engineer Blaise Henri Arnoult.
A winch system lifted the stalls up to the level of the amphitheatre and the stage, on which was built a second room surrounded by colonnades and decorated with a ceiling painted by Gabriel Briard.

The Royal Opera House has announced a major name change to Royal Ballet and Opera, and its ambitious programme for the 2024/25 season.
On Tuesday (30 April) the company, under its new and combined organisational name, announced eight new ballet productions, a world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s opera Festen and a European premiere of Wayne McGregor’s MaddAddam .
While the Royal Opera and Ballet have long operated in the same building, the organisation said today that it is including the ballet into its name to reflect the breadth of its offering.
Alex Beard, the chief executive of the Royal Ballet and Opera, said the name update was “long overdue”.
“The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera have performed under the same roof since 1946 – and both companies now enjoy the prominence that they rightfully deserve,” Beard said.
“Together, the Royal Ballet and Opera will continue to perform at Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House, with performances shown in cinemas around the world, marking an exciting new era for the two companies as they enter a thrilling 2024/25 Season.”
Lee Hall has written the libretto for Turnage’s Festen , with Allan Clayton, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Gerald Finley in the cast. Richard Jones will direct, with Edward Gardner as conductor.
Other new opera productions include Ted Huffman, who previously directed the 2016 staging of Philip Venables’ 4.48: Psychosis , making his main stage debut with Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin .
Offenbach’s last work The Tales of Hoffman (1880) will be directed by Damiano Michieletto, and a Leonard Bernstein double bill will mark the first time his two shorter-length semi-autobiographical operas Trouble in Tahiti and A Quiet Place have been staged at the Covent Garden house.
Between the departure of English-Italian conductor Antonia Pappano’s as music director at the Royal Opera, Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša does not take over until September 2025, so this season will host them both.
Pappano will conduct Barrie Kosky’s second installment of Ring Cycle , Die Walküre . Christopher Maltman reprises as Wotan, Lise Davidsen sings the role of Siegline and Elisabet Strid as Brünnhilde.
The Royal Ballet will put on the European premiere of Wayne McGregor’s MaddAddam , based on Margaret Atwood’s trilogy of novels, Oryx and Crake , The Year of the Flood and MaddAddam .
Kenneth MacMillan’s acclaimed Romeo and Juliet will return, marking its 60th anniversary.
Meanwhile, new work will be presented by choreographers including Christopher Wheeldon, Crystal Pite, Joseph Toonga and Kyle Abraham.
For the Christmas season, Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella and Antony McDonald’s Humperdinck opera adaptation of Hansel and Gretel are billed to draw in the festive crowds.
The announcement comes as the organisation has experienced a 10 per cent cut in Arts Council England funding as many institutions in the arts sector face similar withdrawals of funding – like the English National Opera (ENO), which has relocated to Manchester after it was told by the Arts Council last year that it would lose its £12m of its funding unless it moved out of the capital.
“We suffered our own cuts – 10 per cent in Arts Council funding, and the economic pressures we feel are no different to those felt by others,” Royal Ballet and Opera chief executive Alex Beard told The Guardian . “[But] in that context it’s so important to put a confident foot forward and invest in the future of the art form.”
The Covent Garden institution continues its push towards younger audiences, offering £30 midweek tickets to those aged between 16 and 25. Ticket prices start from £3 in the Linbury, £4 for main stage ballet programmes and £8 for operas.
Booking for the 2024/25 season will open on Wednesday 10 July.

The Royal Opera House is getting a new name (kind of)
The home of opera and ballet is finally being equally recognised with a new name
What do we think of when we think of the Royal Opera House ? It’s a big, regal-looking building, yes - but it’s also a historical British institution, showcasing some of the best art the UK has to offer.
There are two main types of art on showcase at the ROH. There’s opera: loud, bellowing singing, that goes on for hours. And of course the ballet, which conjures up images of dancers in pointe shoes prancing around. It’s clear the Royal Opera House hasn’t been a one trick pony for years, and is now equally known for both opera and ballet.
And now, both arts are being recognised in a new name for the organisation, which will be called Royal Ballet and Opera. While the building’s iconic name is not changing, remaining as the Royal Opera House , the bosses of both opera and ballet in the building hope this name change will make the ground more level for the two disciplines.
Oliver Mears, head of the Royal Opera said the change was ‘long overdue’. H is ballet boss counterpart Kevin O’Hare said: ‘We’re equals in this building, we always have been, so this is a moment saying that.’
Ballet and opera at the Royal Opera House once had to fight (not literally) for schedule time when their seasons clashed. Mears said that thankfully that relationship has now come a long way and that the name change is ‘a good way of acknowledging that’.
Did you see that a massive crown sculpture is coming to London this summer ?
Plus: The Gherkin is getting its first-ever makeover .
