Testimonials.

We visited Patagonia from April 1 to 8. Florence had explained everything to us before thanks to a phone call to review our itinerary… So we made this extraordinary journey without any difficulties. Punta Arenas -Puerto Natales -Park Torres Del Paine -El Calafate.. She was able to identify our expectations and sent us a message during our stay to make sure everything was going well !!! Really professional, very kind. We highly recommend Travel Coach Chile. Thank you very much Florence

Patagonie chilienne torres del paine massif montagneux chili

We went to visit our expatriate son; we also visited Chile thanks to Travel Coach Chile. Florence concocted an 18-day tailor-made trip between sea and mountain. Discovering the great outdoors, unusual places where we were almost alone in the world, including time to rest and laze at the beach. Florence was a good advisor in preparing and listening constantly throughout the trip. Bookings and activites were perfectly followed, and her recommendations for restaurants were perfect. Recommended without hesitation.

Geysers El tatio Atacama

We traveled with Travel Coach Chile to Valparaiso and Patagonia. We congratulate ourselves our choice. Indeed with a hundred trips of experience, they have all the tips and tricks to make your trip perfect. Everything went according to plan, in every detail, without improvisation and with a lot of seriousness and professionalism. We look forward to returning to explore Atacama and Easter Island. Thank you and see you very soon.

Thanks to Florence from the agency Travel Coach Chile for the organization of our trip to Chile. We were 3 retired couples and visited: Santiago, Valparaiso, Atacama and Patagonia. Custom private travel. Very good advice and flawless bookings of hotels and excursions. Don’t hesitate to contact her for your trip.

Valparaiso tag street art

It was the first time we went on vacation with a travel agency. In addition to the appealing budget compared to the program, we liked not having to take care of anything, and especially not the journeys between airport and hotel or those kinds of logistical details! The fact that we did not have to look up on the internet and investigate the tours or visits, thanks to Myriam and Travel Coach Chile, added a lot to the ‘wow’ effect we had on each excursion! Surprises guaranteed! Chile is a sublime country, with crazy landscapes, the feeling of being very small and alone sometimes, surrounded by incredible nature where one feels ‘free’. The contrast between north and south offers a unique variety of landscapes!

Thank you for your professionalism, which we greatly appreciated. We will not hesitate to recommend you. We enjoyed Myriam’s visit to San Pedro de Atacama. She really took the task seriously. At the time of the first contact, we appreciated the immediate personalization of the support. Our best memory? Without hesitation the Salar de Surire, which was a unique moment. The beauty of the landscapes, the magical atmosphere that connects us with nature. We all felt strong emotions there. Our impression? We particularly enjoyed the scenery and nature. It is a country for lovers of the great outdoors, who want to keep away from mass tourism.

randonnee pedestre dans l'altiplano dans un bofedal à l'extrême nord au chili

We were more than satisfied with Travelcoachchile’s services. The whole program went as planned, and if not, given the follow-up during the trip (via WhatsApp), I think Florence would always have found a solution. The best part of TravelCoachChile is clearly their knowledge regarding the personalization of the trip according to the wishes of the travellers. In addition, the entire process for organizing the trip (calls, feedback on the proposed program) allows them to accurately capture the expectations of travelers, whether in terms of accommodation or activities. We also enjoyed all the good deals given (restaurants, activities to do during the free time). For us, Valparaiso and San Pedro de Atacama in 9 days was perfect!

I think that unanimously the most special moment of this trip was to find ourselves alone in the pool of geysers del tatio. Not only is the place amazing, but when you experience it by yourself, it’s a big plus!

A big thanks to you for this trip to Chile, which delighted us. You have really been a valuable help, and have totally captured the spirit of our trip with friends. Our one regret is not seeing the Atacama, but thanks to you we avoided a difficult situation and discovered another superb region. We appreciate your responsiveness. Your choice of accommodations was varied, they were all well located, and each had a different charm. In short, we loved it!

Plus, we gave bonus points to those with a commitment to sustainability. No matter which top Chile travel agency you decide to go with, the travel planning process should feel seamless.

"ILoveChile Tours are the best! We loved that Sebastian was both authentic and incredibly enthusiastic about his country. He customised the tour to suit our needs and was very helpful and thoughtful throughout the day. He had a great deal of interesting knowledge which was conveyed in an east to understand way. We would highly recommend ILoveChile Tours. They are responsive, punctual and very friendly."

"Spent 2 days with Sebastian on private tours of Valparaiso and the Andes. Both days were amazing experiences. The communication before the tours were prompt and clear. The vans were clean/comfortable with safe drivers. Seb was enthusiastic and full of information. The itineraries included a lot without feeling rushed and the local restaurants he picked for our lunches had delicious food. He was also flexible when we decide to stay longer in some areas, took pics when asked and also brought us to the airport at the end of our tour. I would strongly recommend ILoveChile tours!"

Luxury Travel to Santiago

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

Santiago, capital of Chile , sits the middle of the country and is its central hub.

The most striking feature of the city is its position on the Central Valley, with the Andes providing an amazing backdrop as they loom majestically on the horizon to the east.

Over the past decade, Santiago has undergone something of a revival in the arts and culture, with new, interesting art galleries and restaurants opening making it a destination in its own right, as opposed to a necessary stopover for exploring the rest of the country.

Santiago is great all year round, especially in the warmer months November through March

  • Visit art galleries and museums
  • Take a trip to some of the artisan and crafts markets
  • Enjoy the city's restaurants, cafes and bars

The best travel agency in Chile!

Maximiliano is very responsible, all went very well.my parents were very happy!it’s worthy and we send a lot of regards from Indonesia to Santiagotrips! We will come back for sure!!! please use and always trust Santiagotrips in your trips in Chile! Very very recommended!

Really good organized!! The mini van was comfortable and our tour guide was very helpful and took us everywhere we preferred to go in our private and wasn’t rushing just to finish the tour. Excellent.

Thank you, everybody at Santiagotrips, for an interesting and enjoyable excursion including Vina del Mar, Las Dunas de Concon and Valparaiso. Everything was organised extremely well and flexibly in accordance with the participants' wishes. A small group of just three people and a very knowledgeable guide who offered unique insights into the many facets of Chile (geography, history, society, culture) made this a tour to remember, with USD 77.- for a total of 12 hours unmatched by any other company offering similar trips. Highly recommended!

These guys were great. I had to organize a couple road trips within and outside Santiago for myself and a couple of friends during the HOT January 2018. Was partially business, partially - for fun. I gave them rough ideas of how i wanted it and had everything planned out by the next day. They actually CARED about their customers, which is not a given in Chile.

Thanks roman it was a pleasure to do the tours with you, we hope you come back soon!!

Don't look any further if you want to raft or canyoning! Had a great experience with Santiago Trips. Especially the personal focus from the tourguide was good. He knew a lot about all the different places and told some interesting stories about the culture. The rafting en canyoning was awesome! Really nice guys as well.

Thanks for your comment Stijin, we hope to have you back for more adventures!

Useful information for planning your vacation in Chile

Chile’s official language is Spanish, though a few indigenous languages are also in use, including Rapa Nui, the Polynesian language of Easter Island . English is widely understood and spoken by many people.

Chile’s currency is the peso ($ or CLP).

For the latest travel advice for Chile, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

There’s lots of fine seafood in Chile thanks to the length of its coastline. The congrio (conger eel) is a national dish, and caldillo de congrio (a soup served with congrio, plus onion and potato balls) is very tasty.

Another typical Chilean dish is cazuela de ave, a nutritious stew containing large pieces of chicken, potatoes, rice, and maybe onions and green peppers. Other traditional dishes include humitas — mashed corn, wrapped in corn leaves and steamed — and pastel de choclo, a pie made of chicken, topped by sweetcorn and sugar, and baked in the oven.

Chile’s geographical extremes means that you can explore a real variety of landscapes in the course of the same trip: you might watch geysers erupt at dawn in the Atacama Desert, then just a few days later take a boat trip to the terminal face of a glacier in Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park — or go hiking around a snow-topped volcano in the Lake District. The great outdoors is naturally a huge element of trips to Chile, but the country has many other dimensions too, including winelands and some of the world’s best stargazing due to its exceptionally clear skies free from light pollution. There’s also the arty, idiosyncratic port city of Valparaíso to explore, and Easter Island, home to carved moai and a Polynesian culture unlike anything you’ll find on the mainland. You can read more about what to do in Chile in our guide to its highlights .

There’s a real variety of options, from state-of-the-art ecolodges in Torres del Paine National Park to chalet-like guesthouses and B&Bs in the Lake District. In the cities of Santiago and Valparaíso, we’ve scouted out boutique, characterful establishments (often with excellent views) rather than impersonal corporate hotels. In the central valleys, you can stay in a traditional casa de campo (country house), or even, in the Elqui Valley, a dome-like structure with a detachable roof purpose-built for stargazing. And, in the far south of Patagonia, you can take a three-day cruise of the Tierra del Fuego icefields, staying on an expedition vessel specially designed to navigate these frozen waters. Our specialists have stayed at all our properties so they can hand-pick the best places to stay  based on your preferences.

Most journeys start in Santiago, Chile’s capital, which has a dramatic backdrop of the Andes (part of the vast mountain range that runs along the entire west coast of South America, from Venezuela to Chile and Argentina). From here, you can travel to almost anywhere in the country.

You can reach Valparaíso, a coastal city with a vibrant street-art and seafood scene, by car from Santiago in a couple of hours. Chile’s far north has the lunar-like valleys and salt flats of the Atacama Desert, the world’s highest and driest non-Polar desert. Further south lie the lush, green, vineyard-braided central valleys, where you can spend days hopping between bodegas (wine cellars). As you continue south, there’s the alpine-like Lake District (if the Alps had volcanoes), before you hit Patagonia proper: all pampas, wide-open plains, glacier-striated mountains, and remote icefields. And, a six-hour flight from the capital will bring you to Easter Island with its enigmatic moai. Our specialists have visited the best places to go in Chile so they can help you decide where’s best for your trip.

You can fly directly from New York City to Santiago, Chile’s capital, in ten-and-a-half hours. It’s also possible to fly direct from Los Angeles (nearly 11 hours) and Miami (just over eight hours).

Chile’s time zone is UTC-4. You might experience a bit of jet lag, so we recommend getting plenty of fresh air and ideally sunlight on the day of your arrival, if possible. In Santiago, we can arrange a variety of guided walking tours or suggest walks to local points of interest near your hotel.

The best way to get around Chile is by road, though the country’s colossal length means that flying is unavoidable if you’d like to explore more than one region in the course of the same trip — we’ll help you choose the best options to cut down on travel time. For most of your trip, we’ll arrange private transfers for you with your own driver. However, the wild landscapes and long, empty stretches of road in the Lake District and Patagonia are the stuff of road-trip legend, and we’ll help you get behind the wheel yourself here, from planning your route to taking care of the logistics. Our travel guide will give you more ideas for a self-drive trip in Chile.

Yes, but keep your passport and entrance card (tarjeta de turismo) to hand while driving.

You don’t need a visa to enter Chile if you’re a US passport holder staying for less than 90 days. Your passport does have to be valid for the duration of your stay. If you’re not a US national, you can check whether you need a visa for Chile here .

When you arrive in Chile, immigration authorities will give you a tarjeta de turismo (tourist card), which you should keep with you and hand back in to the immigration authorities when you leave the country.

Your doctor can provide you with immunization advice for Chile, but it’s a good idea to be up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the recommended vaccinations by visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

The gadventure end of the earth tour was fantastic...a good mix of trekking and sightseeing and a great value. Patagonia has been on my life list for years and our guide Gabi was exceptional.

It was a wonderful trek, incredible nature and nice hiking camps! Be aware, you hike 7-9 hours a day for 4 days...this is not for everybody. But its worth it!!! Patagonia is the best :)
The trekking was very good but one of the Cuernos Refugio charged me 19% VAT because I did not have the PID. I had to obtain a duplicate or apply for it at a police station within 7 days for the Cuernos front desk to cancel the charge. I thought I had paid for the entire tour. I was not warned that the park refugios would try to charge me tax on a tour that I had paid for in full onlin months before. This was very distressing. I did not feel welcome.

Epic adventure, everything was perfectly organized
we used OneSeed for the W loop at Torres del Paine - excellent guides, accomodations and logistics and the park was fantastic! They also setup peripheral trips such as a penguin tour and a winery tour. Can't say enough about the quality of the guides and how much fun it was to spend time with the guides.

It was a very rewarding experience.
I booked the 8-day ‘O’ Circuit trek in Torres del Paine through Unu Raymi and completed the trek in late December 2023. The booking process prior to the trek was quite straightforward, and James was able to answer the various questions that I had. The trek itself was fantastic and I had an excellent team in Francisco (as my guide) and Teo (as the cook/porter) out on the trail. Francisco obviously knew the trail well, and in addition had very good knowledge about the plants we saw and was able to point out the names of the various mountains throughout the trek, as well as being very good at spotting the condors high above on several days. Teo did a superb job with the meals on the trek. He was able to accommodate my request for vegan food and I was amazed at the variety of the different meals he was able to prepare, including fresh vegetables at various times, and every meal tasted great. Overall it was a fantastic experience!

As perfect as a trip could be! Fantastic accommodations, amazing scenery, extremely knowledgeable guide, exquisite food and drinks, friendly people all over the island.
Excellent tour, everything was handled professionally and to our extreme satisfaction. We were greeted at the airport by our guide, Dominique, who rode with us to the hotel and assisted us in checking in at Santiago. Hotel was tops, clean, and service was outstanding. Tours were educational for my teenage daughter and Dominique catered to all of our requests. Argentina was amazing, same professional service and courtesy from our guide Tomas. All of our needs were met, Marilda was very helpful in arranging all of our requests and special concerns. Great tour, great company and excellent staff, I would highly recommend and gladly tour with them again.

Receptivo Aborigen Tours

Receptivo Aborigen Tours

  • Good - 92 reviews for Chile tours
Everyone helpful and most tours interesting although latterly a bit repetitive - a salt lake is a salt lake is a salt lake. A lot depends on the other people on these tours and I was mostly lucky. It would have have been interesting to have had more exposure to the indigenous people and their culture and also the old town at Tula
I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. However, the on ground provider let Receptivo Aborigen down by not providing an English speaking guide. This did make it a little difficult at times, except that the guided tours at Cave of the Hands and the Marble Cathedral were English speakers. Fortunately while driving to and from the tour sites, it was not that important to have an English speaker - it just would have made the long trips more enjoyable. Receptivo Aborigen could not have been more helpful in providing advice and up to date details for me to follow along the way via What's App. I couldn't fault them in this regard.

The itinerary was not accurate. There was also no communication when changes were made regarding the itinerary. There was also late accommodation's arranged since there was nothing actually planned for the day. The only contact available then blamed the customer for their lack of preparedness.

Patagonia tour, Atacama Desert, Buenos Aires and Santiago. Wonderful trip! Eve had every detail perfectly set up so that all ran smoothly. Recommend We People for sure.
I travelled with the company in November 2019 and the experience was incredible. I joined one of their group tours and it was amazing. The group departure was in Spanish, English and German which was great for me because in this departure were a lot of German people and a main guide who spoke German perfectly well. In the group were 13 passengers which was the perfect amount of people to share a hiking trip and the group was what made this trip unique. I am also in touch with Andrea and Matt, who became very close friends of mine. All services were absolutely great, the camp, the hotels, the transportation. I can only recommend that we should all do a group trip for once in our lives.

Indus Travels

  • Excellent - 252 reviews for Chile tours
Itinerary was perfect, Guides were great and professional. All factors expected were there and we really enjoyed the trip. Accommodations were top notch and comfortable. The only distraction was the lack of English T-V channels in half the hotels. Tours were great and side trips were worth the cost.
The tour was as not as described. Heavily overpriced. First, it was not a group tour. I was alone on this tour. Second, the accommodations are described as deluxe. Not true. The hotels in Buenos Aires and El Calafate were horrible. The breakfast included scrambled eggs, ham, orange juice and lots of bread. Third, Buenos Aires City tour was the worst ever I have been to and I traveled to at least 20 countries and probably 50 different cities so I can compare. It is a city tour for 2.5 hours on the bus. 90% of the tour was in Spanish and only 10% in English. There were only two stops of 20 minutes each where you can walk around. They don’t even stop at the Obelisk, the city’s main attraction. The only highlight of Buenos Aires is the Tango Show but you can easily book it yourself, it costs $55 with dinner. Forth, the most outrageous are the optional extortions. For example, In El Calafate your ticket to Glassier National Park only includes the entrance, it is $20. It does not include the boat ride around the glacier. It costs another $20 if you want to do it but the company charges $45. Don’t pay in advance, you will save $25. Even more ridiculous is the second optional tour in El Calafate - lake boat ride. The company wants more than $200. In El Calafate it costs only $95 +$10 for the park entrance. On these tours you are on your own, there is no guide. I was the only English speaking person on the boat. The tours in Chile were much better. The tours were informative and enjoyable. Is it worth going to Argentina and Chile? Yes, but find a better company.

On The Go Tours

On The Go Tours

  • Excellent - 2,953 reviews for Chile tours
Our tour leader, Joanne Lunn was not up to the standard required. Day 1 The tour start was compromised by the tour leader deciding that the half day tour be undertaken on the first day rather than the second. Due to flight delays this tour was hurried and we missed the Recoletta. We did undertake this on the second day and were extremely lucky to meet up with a guide who allowed us to join his tour. Otherwise we would have walked the site with no real idea of what we were looking at as our guide did not have that knowledge. We understand that the half day tour being moved to day 1 was to allow any of the party to undertake a full day tour on the second day. We had investigated this option, but after looking at the options, decided against this as we had seen much of BA earlier. Our understanding was that the tour options were to be discussed with us, but this did not happen. If we had booked a tour we would have missed out on the Recoletta. Rosie could have undertaken a day tour to Iguazu Falls, but that was not offered as an option. Lack of preparation. Jo made reference to a 27 Page dossier, with no evidence to show that she had reviewed and was making use of the information contained within it. She was unaware of distances and duration of travel each day, unaware of how many meals we were having each day in relation to the dossiers that we had been given. There was little evidence that preparation had been done in sufficient detail as Jo was completely reliant on the daily guides and local offices for specific information. Reverting to Internet searches when access to guides was not available. There was lack of preparation on important issues such as health and safety. She had no idea of the high risk of Denge fever in BA despite this making international news a few days before the tour started. On day one she should have discussed the possible signs and symptoms of Altitude sickness rather than it coming up in conversation between us. Jo worked out what she considered was the requirement for tips for the entire trip. This was $US40 per person. We all thought that a bit light and agreed on $US50 each. This was all used just after the halfway point of the tour. We are still unsure of why this happened as the tips had been pre-calculated. As the trip progressed she was asking us about tips for the guide and driver when she had apparently calculated tips going forward as referred to. If she was going to arrange tips she should have discussed with Liz, who she met up with on two occasions, what level of tip was appropriate rather than asking us. Again demonstrating lack of preparation. On the day bus ride from Puno to Cusco, Jo's notes (which she had provided to us) indicated that she would be providing snacks for that ride. These did not eventuate. At the single stop we did have she asked if we required something to eat. We responded no as it was too early for lunch. It was never explained to us that this would be the only stop. On the trip to Cafeyate we had a Spanish only speaking guide. We asked numerous questions which Jo translated. It was obvious that detailed responses were made, but only one line replies were fed back to us. Jo has a number of personality traits that were not suitable for a tour leader: Continually interrupting conversations we were having. Very rude. Treating us as though we were children, despite the fact we were all seasoned traveller's. Telling Rosie her room is on the first floor when her room number was 104 is an example. Jo had not done this tour before. She made many assumptions that were not correct and did not make sense to us. She was often proved wrong and had to change her story. This was a direct result of her lack of knowledge and insufficient research. We got to the stage where we did not know what to believe in the everchanging story. She also interrupted guides on many occasions ruining the flow of the commentary. She also interjected with comments that were incorrect and needed correction by the guide. Basically, she talked and interrupted far too often to make the trip enjoyable. Inappropriate interventions of assistance that were not required such as carrying bags when she had her own to manage. Jo commented to my wife Jan at one stage that she was the 'easy one' or something along those lines. This is totally inappropriate given that I, as Jan's spouse was one of the people she was referring to as being difficult. Jo could learn a lot from the way Edwin worked. At the end of each day he gave a clear and concise summary of what expect on the following day, when we would start and what to wear. At one point, in San Pedro de Atacama we had to sit her down and ask a number of pointed questions to get required information. There was a distinct impression that Jo was on the tour because she had not seen most of the sights before. Very nice for her, but it meant she did not have the knowledge to guide this tour properly and was always scrambling to get information to answer our queries. The trip had great scenery and other highlights, and could have been an excellent experience with the right guide.
Fast-paced and hitting many of the highlights of South America in a manageable timeframe. Highly recommended. Hotels were decent and individual (no bland chains here!) and the guide was extremely knowledgeable and personalised the tour throughout to things that those in the group were interested in specifically. It was a small group (6) and a perfect match between group activity and then free time to explore places in the way you wanted to. A memorable experience and the landscapes in NW Argentina, Chile and Bolivia are unsurpassed globally in my opinion!

Popular Chile Travel Styles

Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Chile is narrow and long, shaped by the mountains to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Patagonia to the south. With the variety of temperatures, weather, and geography, the best time to visit Chile is in the Southern Hemisphere’s fall from March to April or the Southern Hemisphere’s spring from September to November.

The weather in cities like Santiago and Valparaiso is consistently comfortable in fall and spring, even into early winter, but the most dramatic temperature changes in Chile take place along the Andes Mountains and in the Subantarctic south at Pagatonia .

The arid desert landscape of the Atacama Desert can drop to around 40°F during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter nights, while Patagonia sees temperatures as low as 32°F in the Southern Hemisphere’s winter months from May to August.

While spring and fall is our favorite time of the year, Chile is a year-round destination with plenty to explore and experience in the Southern Hemisphere’s summer and winter.

Whether visiting the Dark Sky Reserve in June, touring Torres del Paine in December, or eager to view the flamingos in October, our guide on the best time to visit Chile can help you find the right month for your trip.

From the artistic neighborhoods of Santiago to the wines of the Casablanca Valley, the bohemian coastal ambiance of Valparaiso to the penguins and colonial churches of Chiloé Island, there is so much to explore in Chile. Here are a few of our best places to visit in Chile :

  • Atacama Desert: The rugged and expansive landscape of the Atacama Desert couples with the sparkling salt lake where flamingos graze. Volcanic peaks, sand dunes, star gazing, and the world’s oldest mummies add to the majestic atmosphere.
  • Torres del Paine National Park: Known for extreme weather and dramatic mountain scenery, Torres del Paine epitomizes Patagonia with granite pillars, a stunning massif, and a combination of wild guanacos grazing beneath the hanging glaciers.

Easter Island: Majestic and mysterious, Easter Island is one of the most remote destinations in the world and captures your imagination with the famous moai statues, remarkable snorkeling, great surf, and timeless panoramic views of extinct volcanoes.

From hiking the Torres del Paine massif to witnessing the starlight in one of the world’s few Dark Sky reserves, here are some of the top things to do in Chile :

  • Trek through nature in different ways across Chile, from hiking in Patagonia to strolling around the glistening glacial lakes on single-day or multi-day hikes
  • Witness the rare beauty of the night sky away from light pollution
  • Experience cultural diversity in the museum galleries, sharing the heritage and histories of local communities from Cape Horn to Easter Island
  • Cycle through the remarkable scenery at your pace for an introduction to landscapes shifting from lunar to mountainous, glacial to coastal
  • Indulge in mouthwatering wines at celebrated vineyards in popular Chilean wine regions

Whether eager to explore the country’s natural beauty or interested in the poetry of Pablo Neruda, you can find unique landmarks and attractions on your Chile trip:

  • Ahu Tongariki, Easter Island
  • Torres del Paine Towers, Patagonia
  • San Rafael Glacier, Patagonia
  • Hand of the Desert, Atacama Desert
  • Geysers del Tatio, Atacama Desert
  • La Sebastiana, Valparaiso
  • Neptune Fountain, Santiago

Chile is known for its breathtaking landscapes, stretching from the high-altitude geysers and salt flats of the Atacama Desert to the hanging glaciers and granite cliffs of Patagonia. Travelers from around the world arrive to visit the wine regions of the Maipo and Casablanca valleys. Visitors can enjoy the contemporary culture of coastal cities like Valparaiso and Viña del Mar when traveling to Chile.

Patagonia is a region inside Chile and Argentina.

The stunning landscape features dramatic mountains capped with snow, winding rivers, and volcanic peaks that cross the border between Chile and Argentina. Both countries have their own unique characteristics, with the W Trail acting as a walking bridge between the two nations.

Patagonia in Chile is home to Torres del Paine National Park, Corcovado Bay, and Queulat National Park, home to Queulat Hanging Glacier.

Easter Island is part of the nation of Chile and is considered one of the most remote populated islands in the world. The only flight connecting to Easter Island is from Chile’s capital city of Santiago. No matter where you are traveling from, you must stop in Santiago to catch a connecting flight to continue to Easter Island.

Chile is a safe country to visit.

Like in any large city, petty crime can happen in popular metropolitan destinations, but it is rare. Pay attention to your surroundings and keep your belongings close in crowded areas. Pack appropriate clothing for the season’s weather conditions when traveling to remote places for outdoor activities.

Your travel specialist can guide you on the best ways to stay safe and comfortable during your trip to Chile.

36 Hours in Santiago, Chile

By John Bartlett Updated Sept. 21, 2023

  • Share full article

A city skyline in the evening. The buildings are lit up and the sky is purple. One gleaming tower rises impressively higher than the other skyscrapers. A snow-capped mountain range soars high in the background.

Because Santiago, Chile’s sprawling capital, is the gateway to some of the world’s greatest natural wonders — Patagonia, the Atacama Desert, Easter Island — many travelers understandably breeze through. It might not wow like Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires, but scratch the surface and the city is alive with music, art and nightlife, against the arresting backdrop of the Andes. Divisions still run deep, 50 years after Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s U.S.-backed coup d’état ushered in a 17-year dictatorship. Just four years ago, Chile exploded into cathartic and, at times, violent unrest, as hundreds of thousands of Santiaguinos protested social inequalities. The scars are there for all to see. But if you’ve made it all this way, you should give Santiago a chance to impress.

Recommendations

  • A hike to the top of Cerro San Cristóbal offers the best views of the city and the Andes Mountains, particularly after rain has cleared the air.
  • The Persa Víctor Manuel flea market boasts music, art and good food on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • The Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos tells the story of General Pinochet’s dictatorship, and helps to explain the Chile you see today.
  • La Pulpería Santa Elvira remixes seasonal Chilean classics and is one of Santiago’s most exciting restaurants.
  • Salsoteca Maestra Vida , a two-room salsa club, gets going late and takes you through into the small hours.
  • Blondie , a former cinema-turned-L.G.B.T.Q. nightclub, hosts a varied crowd.
  • El Bajo is a plant-filled mezzanine bar beneath the GAM , an arts center in the historic Lastarria neighborhood that hosts exhibitions, book fairs and live events.
  • Casa de la Cueca showcases Chile’s national dance, la cueca, and serves hearty dishes on the first Sunday of each month.
  • El Portal Ex Bahamondes is the birthplace of the completo, Chile’s culinary obsession.
  • El Franchute del Barrio is the lively setting for French-inspired weekend lunches.
  • Café Escondido is a fun bar tucked down an alleyway in the city center.
  • La Chascona , the former home of the poet Pablo Neruda, is stuffed with trinkets and collectibles.
  • Factoría Franklin is a new arts and cultural space with stalls, creative workshops and AFA Galería , a modern art gallery.
  • Centro Artesanal Los Dominicos , a former convent right at the end of L1 on the metro, is a one-stop shop for Indigenous handicrafts, leatherware and assorted artisanry.
  • Metales Pesados and Ulises in the city center are two of Santiago’s finest bookstores.
  • The Singular Santiago in Lastarria is an upmarket option with a smart rooftop bar and views towards Cerro San Cristóbal. Double rooms start from around 180,000 Chilean pesos, or about $204, for the night.
  • The Hotel Boutique Castillo Rojo , in a renovated colonial mansion in the Bellavista neighborhood, is a boutique option with rooms starting from about 140,000 pesos.
  • Hostal Forestal , a laid-back city center hostel, has private rooms with ensuite bathrooms starting from 32,000 pesos. A bunk bed in a six-to-eight-person dormitory costs about 12,000 pesos.
  • Short-term rentals are abundant. Find somewhere along the metro’s L1 in Providencia or Lastarria to be close to the action.
  • Uber and Cabify compete for ride-hailing traffic, and both are safe and reliable. Taxis are fine, too, but you’ll nearly always have to pay in cash — make sure the meter is running before you set off. The metro is extensive and safe, but as with any city, watch out for pickpockets. Buses rattle along all of the main routes and are relatively cheap and easy to use.
  • Streetside bike rental (download the Bike Itaú app ) is a good option, but parking docks are concentrated in the wealthier neighborhoods. Be wary of disconnected bike paths and merciless bus drivers. On Sundays, many of the city’s main arteries are closed to cars for the Ciclorecreovía , an event that allows for leisurely exploration on foot and by bike.

People dance while holding colorful handkerchiefs. Behind them is a brightly painted mural of an outdoor scene.

More From 36 Hours

Have a weekend to explore a destination we’ve got the perfect travel itinerary..

Growing up in Colorado Springs, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, Mikayla Britsch was encouraged to care deeply about the area’s natural resources and the people who lived there. She followed the news from a young age, as did her parents, who were vocal about current events and worked in “people-centric” positions that served members of the public.

Britsch knew that she, too, wanted her work to be socially driven. Living in an extremely car-oriented city, she became interested in public transportation. At MIT, she decided to follow the path of her grandfather, a civil engineer, and majored in civil and environmental engineering, with a minor in Spanish.

“Being a civil engineer is a career but also a vocation, a calling to use math and science to solve societal problems and help or improve communities,” Britsch says. “It calls on you to be in constant dialogue with others. No one can work in civil engineering alone; you work with colleagues, transportation planners, architects, clients, and the public for even the most basic project.”

At MIT, Britsch has studied ways to improve transportation systems and engage with the public, through several research and extracurricular opportunities. She has worked in the Department of Urban Studies for two Undergraduate Research Opportunities, or UROPs, which involved researching different public transit agencies to study their responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. Her capstone project looks at how to deliver packages more efficiently, something Britsch says will make structural systems better for individuals, our environment, and our society.

This research, along with tutoring jobs, teaching and researching abroad, and participating in the mock trial team, has given Britsch a sense of the work she hopes to do in the future. “It would be nice to work in a combination of transportation engineering and public policy, using what I’ve learned at MIT and from the people I’ve met to improve transportation,” she says.

After graduation, Britsch plans to work as a transportation engineer in Colorado before going to graduate school.

Thriving on social interaction

Britsch has an affinity for communication, and considers “talking a lot,” to be one of the most integral aspects of her identity.

Her interest in the Spanish language began in high school, and carried into college, “I fell in love with Spanish. It really clicked in my mind in a way, and I got invested in learning about it,” she says. Britsch is fluent in the language and continues to immerse her studies in the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.

She values communication in her on-campus jobs as well. She works as a tutor and a tour guide and delights in engaging with new groups of people weekly. Britsch also enjoys socializing with the members of her living community, McCormick Hall, MIT’s all-female dormitory, “It’s very homey. There's also a lot of safety and community in this space,” she says.

Britsch cites her communities on campus — her close-knit civil engineering major, the mock trial team, and the Lutheran Episcopal Ministry — as other important social outlets. She says she has gained some of her closest friends from these groups, “When you spend so much time in practices and competitions, it becomes a community.”

Following her final mock trial competition last month, Britsch and her team came together for a movie night to celebrate their hard work. Britsch has an ongoing list of her favorite childhood movies she believes “are important for other people to watch,” that she is currently working through with her friends.

Travel, and motivating others

One of Britsch’s goals before starting MIT was to implement her language education abroad in South America, which she did through the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI). Her first MISTI experience was in the summer of 2022 when she traveled to Santiago, Chile, where she worked at the University of Chile researching optimal placements for public electric-vehicle charging stations in the city.

Although she had to overcome the challenges of a different culture, climate, and language dialect, Britsch says the experience was rewarding: “I learned a lot about Chile in my Spanish classes, and it’s a really interesting country.”

Britsch also lived in Mexico in January 2023 and Spain in January 2024 for MIT’s Global Teaching Labs program. She taught statistics, calculus, and algebra to students ranging from preschool to 12th grade. Working in multiple schools and grade levels was a “cool” way to learn about how education varies in other countries, as well as a nostalgic reminder of her time as a grade-school student, she says.

Britsch reflects on her MISTI experiences fondly and claims, “If I could have, I would’ve done it every year.” She hopes to continue visiting Spanish-speaking countries after college and is considering pursuing temporary teaching abroad opportunities in the future.

In her work as a tutor on campus, Britsch finds joy in motivating others in their academic pursuits. She has tutored friends and her dorm members and is employed through the Talented Scholars Resource Room . She is a teaching assistant for an aerospace computer science course as well.

About mentoring, Britsch reflects, “I always relied on myself to do things but when I came to MIT, I realized it’s impossible to rely on just yourself. You can't be successful without help from other people. A lot of the reason that I like tutoring is because I want to show people that asking for help isn't a bad thing.”

The multiple benefits of city bus electrification boost adoption in advanced and emerging economies.

Sales of electric buses, comprising all medium- and large-sized buses, are far ahead of those of other heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) segments (including medium- and heavy-duty trucks 1 ). Several European countries (such as Belgium, Norway and Switzerland) and the People’s Republic of China (hereafter "China") achieved sales shares above 50% in 2023, and more than one-fifth of bus sales were electric in Canada, Chile, Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Sweden. Globally, almost 50 000 electric buses were sold in 2023, equating to 3% of total bus sales and bringing the global stock to approximately 635 000 in total. This relatively low share is primarily due to the limited sales shares in most EMDEs, as well as the low market penetration of electric buses in some larger markets such as the United States and Korea.

Early policy support for electrifying public transport, and the availability of domestically produced electric buses, coupled with incentives, meant that China took an early and significant lead in electric bus sales. In 2020, China was responsible for about 90% of electric bus sales worldwide. In 2023, this fell to around 60%, largely due to a decrease in domestic demand for both electric and ICE buses and, to a lesser extent, increasing sales in other regions. The fall in Chinese demand could be a consequence of the early success seen for electric buses – around 65% of China’s electric bus stock was deployed before 2019. It may also be linked to the ending of purchase subsidies for BEV and PHEV buses at the end of 2022. Despite China’s lead in global sales having shrunk, Chinese manufacturers continue to export large volumes of electric buses, accounting for over 85% of electric city bus deployments in Latin America. They have also increased their market share in the European Union from 10% of bus sales in 2017 to 30% in 2023, driven by companies such as Yutong and BYD.

City buses, in particular, have strong potential for electrification thanks to their relatively fixed driving patterns and lower daily travel distances, and have spearheaded growth in electric bus sales. In the European Union, BEVs reached a 43% sales share among city buses in 2023, demonstrating clear progress towards the proposed target of 100% of city bus sales being zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs) by 2035. Over the same period, just 1% of European Union coach sales were battery electric, though uptake is increasing there and around the world.

There has also been encouraging progress in EMDEs, where a focus on the co-benefits of electric buses – such as reduced air pollution and greater access to public transport – has boosted take-up. This has been further supported by the wide availability of electric buses in already competitive markets. Cities across Latin America, such as Bogota and Santiago, have deployed nearly 6 500 electric buses to date. BasiGo , Africa’s largest electric bus company, has an order book of 350 buses, which represents almost 2% of electric bus sales outside of China in 2023, and aims to sell a further 1 000 electric buses in Kenya and 200 in Rwanda in the coming years.

Along with high potential for electrification of city buses, infrastructure developments can also support the transition. The bus rapid transit (BRT) system, which is based on the use of dedicated bus lanes with priority access at intersections and off-board fare collection, can support the establishment of high-capacity, efficient services for cities. The new all-electric BRT system in Dakar – the first on the African continent – is a strong example. This network, announced at the end of 2023, will serve 320 000 passengers per day. Elsewhere, the European bus rapid transit of 2030 ( eBRT2030 ) scheme aims to improve the urban transport environment by developing innovative solutions for electric BRTs, with demonstrations in Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona and Prague, among other cities.

Electric bus registrations and sales share by region, 2015-2023

Electric truck sales are gaining momentum.

Sales of electric trucks increased 35% in 2023 compared to 2022, meaning that total sales of electric trucks surpassed electric buses for the first time, at around 54 000. China is the leading market for electric trucks, accounting for 70% of global sales in 2023, down from 85% in 2022. In Europe, electric truck sales increased almost threefold in 2023 to reach more than 10 000 (>1.5% sales share). The United States also saw a threefold increase, though electric truck sales reached just 1 200, less than 0.1% of total truck sales.

We expect electric truck sales to continue to increase thanks to strong and ambitious policies, such as the European Union’s CO 2 standards for HDVs, which target a 90% CO 2 emissions reduction by 2040. In the United States, the newly adopted heavy-duty emissions regulation is expected to result in ZEV sales shares of up to 60% by 2032 in different segments.

At the city-level, zero emissions (or “green”) zones for freight , are being implemented in 15 different cities as diverse as London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Quito, Shenzhen, Seoul and Taoyuan City. Together, these cities have a total population of over 52 million. In addition, initiatives such as EV100+, the Global Memorandum of Understanding on Zero-Emission Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicles co-led by Drive to Zero, the European Clean Trucking Alliance, the eTransport coalition, the First Movers Coalition–Trucking, and the Fleet Electrification Coalition have increased their membership. They continue to advocate for more ambitious policies , such as accelerated sales targets and zero emission government fleets.

In the United States, there have been efforts to use demonstration projects to identify truck segments ripe for electrification. In June 2023, the North American Council for Freight Efficiency, together with the Rocky Mountain Institute, launched Run on Less – Electric DEPOT . Through this initiative, depots deployed almost 300 electric trucks of various sizes to gather telemetry data with the aim of identifying use cases where electric trucks are already a viable solution, as well as where challenges remain.

Similarly, the UK Government is investing USD 250 million under the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Programme to run real-world trials of zero-emission trucks. The programme will deploy 370 trucks and almost 60 refuelling and electric charging sites.

Electric truck adoption is also gaining momentum in EMDEs outside of China. In India, NITI Aayog launched the Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport , a platform to pioneer collaboration between the government and private sector partners for large-scale freight electrification. This initiative has spurred 16 major manufacturing and logistics companies to collectively signal demand for 7 750 electric freight vehicles by 2030. To meet this demand, focused efforts will be needed on policy regulation, establishing market certainty, scalable pilot support, infrastructure development, and creating blended financing platforms to attract private investments.

Electric truck registrations and sales share by region, 2015-2023

China produces the largest selection of battery electric heavy-duty vehicles.

Chinese OEMs currently produce by far the largest number of models of battery electric HDVs – 430 in total – with a particular focus on buses suitable for urban public transport, which make up almost 40% of all models. 2 In 2021 alone, Chinese OEMs released almost 150 bus models, providing more choice and covering more applications in what was already the world’s largest electric bus market. Since 2021, the number of additional new models has continued to grow, but with a more even distribution across different segments – over 65 new models for buses, and around 40 each for medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks – thereby enabling wider electrification. A significant number of models is now available in each segment in China.

North American OEMs produce a far smaller number of battery electric models – over 170 – with a greater emphasis on the medium-duty truck market, which accounts for more than 60% of all models. New brands such as Rizon are targeting the electric medium-duty segment in North America, where despite their higher upfront costs, electric trucks are already competitive with diesel trucks in terms of total cost of ownershiplifetime costs, especially when charged at depot as opposed to higher-cost public charging. Costs are even more competitive when factoring in incentives available in the United States and Canada . Though both the United States and Canada also have policy incentives specifically targeting buses, they have relatively small public transport markets and, as a consequence, buses suitable for urban public transport make up just over 10% of all models. Instead, OEMs have targeted the school bus niche, producing nine different models excluding minibuses.

Despite producing a lower number of battery electric models overall, at around 120, European OEMs offer the most even distribution of models across segments. They also have the highest share of heavy-duty trucks, with more than 20% of all models. This has allowed European OEMs, in particular the Volvo group (which includes the Mack, Renault, and Dongfeng (joint venture) truck brands), to gain a large share of not only the European, but also the North American heavy-duty electric truck market. European OEMs also produce a significant number of niche vehicles such as refuse trucks (around 10% of all models), which – like medium-duty trucks – are already cost-competitive with their ICE counterparts.

On average, individual Chinese OEMs produce more models across segments, which differentiates Chinese OEMs from those in other regions. Only about half of Chinese OEMs produce models for a single segment, compared to around 70% in North America and Europe.

Model availability is a key indicator of the growing maturity of the battery electric HDV market, but the number of OEMs is also important for assessing competition and ability to meet future demand.

The number of OEMs producing electric HDVs in China trebled between 2020 and 2023, from 12 to 36, in response to increasing sales of electric trucks domestically, as well as increasing electric bus sales abroad. In addition to growth in the number of Chinese OEMs, companies such as BYD, Skywell, Dongfeng and Foton have also expanded their offerings, with models in the bus, MD truck, and HD truck segments, offering potential advantages in terms of economies of scale and supply chains. The strength of the domestic market may also have allowed Chinese firms to build more robust supply chains.

North America also experienced an almost threefold increase in the number of HDV OEMs between 2020 and 2023, from 16 to 45. Early support in states such as California and anticipation of national policies supported investment in HDV manufacturing, which was later boosted by demand incentives and regulations . United States-based OEMs typically specialise in models for a smaller number of segments than Chinese OEMs. Only Lion offers vehicles in the bus, MD truck, and HD truck categories, along with Exro’s recently acquired SEA Electric, which builds vehicles for different applications by adapting its powertrain to glider chassis platforms from other OEMs.

Europe had the highest number of HDV OEMs in 2020, but still saw a 50% increase between 2020 and 2023 to reach 36, the same number as China but less than the United States. Established OEMs such as Volvo Trucks, MAN, Mercedes, and Quantron offer vehicles in three or more segments. This wide range of offerings, coupled with an already strong position in the global market, and relatively low sales shares in Europe prior to 2023, meant there was less space for new entrants to compete.

Manufacturers in the rest of the world have not responded to the electric HDV opportunity in the same way, mirroring the slower uptake of electric HDVs to date and fewer supportive policies than in leading electric HDV markets. Of the OEMs outside of China, North America and Europe, nine produce models in the bus segment alone, with India’s Tata Motors producing both buses and MD trucks. Korean OEM Hyundai produces only FCEV HDVs, while only three Japanese OEMs feature in the database.

“Trucks” refers to both medium (3.5-15 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight [GVW]) and heavy (15 tonnes GVW and above) trucks.

Excludes minibuses, i.e. buses with 25 seats or fewer. Where the number of seats changes by 5 or less, variations of the same model are counted as one throughout this analysis. For the purposes of this calculation, buses suitable for urban public transport are defined as having a seating capacity of between 30 and 70.
