The Best Travel Soap Case, Dish, Bag or Container

Last Updated on May 22, 2020

Nobody wants mushy, gunky soap getting all over their clothes.

But a bar of soap is often the best cleanser to pack when traveling.

The solution is a travel soap case or bag. They’re perfect for traveling and you can also use them to take a bar of soap to the gym or sports club, but they are not all created equally.

We review a lot of travel gear at TravelingLight.com and feel that the soap case is often an undervalued travel accessory.

This post has a look at what’s on offer and picks out what we think is the best product.

At A Glance: The Best Travel Soap Case

  • #1 Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Bag – A breathable yet water repellent bag to pack your soap in.
  • #2 Carry-Dri Vented Travel Soap Case – A vented plastic soap case that lets your soap dry without leaking water on your clothes.
  • #3 Kiasona Travel Soap Case Box – A secure case that won’t open unexpectedly.
  • #4 Puting Portable Soap Saver – An economical multipack.

Packing A Bar of Soap vs Body Wash or Shower Gel

What you use at home comes down to personal preference.

But when you are traveling there is a compelling reason to pack soap in a soap holder rather than body wash or shower gel.

Body wash is a liquid and subject to the TSA liquids rule meaning you can only pack travel-size body wash bottles in your carry on luggage.

A bar of soap is solid and not subject to the liquids rule. So you don’t need to put a solid soap bar in your quart-sized baggie when going through the TSA security checkpoint.

You can pack as many soap bar cases as you want in your luggage, it’s even possible to get shampoo bars that work just as well as their liquid counterparts. And a bar of laundry soap allows you to wash your underwear in the hotel sink so you don’t need to pack as many clothes.

By switching liquids for solids you can make packing carry on luggage a lot easier.

Also, a bar of soap lasts a lot longer than body wash. I’ll be lucky is a travel-size bottle of shower gel will last me 2 showers but a bar of soap can last for weeks.

All this means that soap is a great option to pack when traveling, but you do need a travel soap dish or at the very least a ziplock bag to stop your clothes from getting wet from the soap bar.

What Makes A Good Travel Soap Dish?

It might seem like a simple product but there are still some things that a travel soap case needs to do well.

A good travel soap case:

  • Protects Your Soap Bar – It’s important to let soap dry after use. If a bar of soap stays wet too long or it goes all soft and mushy.
  • Doesn’t leak! – You have a quick shower and then immediately pack to get ready to check out your accommodation. Your soap bar is still going to be wet and you’d better hope your travel soap case doesn’t leak or you’ll get gunk all over your suitcase.
  • Is the Right Size – Your soap container needs to be able to fit your soap bars. Make sure your soap holder is the right dimensions to hold the bar of soap that you want to pack but not be too large that it takes up space in your bag.
  • Is Not Too Heavy – We’re all about traveling light here so we don’t want a soap case that’s going to add unnecessary weight to our case.

If you don’t have a soap dish for travel you could always use a plastic ziplock bag for a soap bag. The problem with that is that the soap gets all soggy and it becomes very messy fast.

The following travel soap cases are all available on Amazon if you buy we receive a small commission but it doesn’t affect the price that you pay.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Bag

best soap bar travel case

The Matador soap bag is made with water-repellent material. This means that any splashes don’t penetrate the bag.

The fabric is also breathable so if your soap bar is damp when you put it in the bag it will be dry next time you take it out.

Frequent travelers love this travel soap case. It’s very useful when packing.

  • The design means that the bag stops the gunk from getting on your clothes but allows the soap bar to dry
  • Not easy to get the soap in and out of the bag. Since it’s not a soap case it doesn’t function as a soap dish or a soap holder while you are in the shower.

Carry-Dri Vented Travel Soap Case

best soap bar travel case

The Carry-Dri makes some bold claims. A plastic soap case that doesn’t leak but also has vents? Surely that’s not possible.

But yet it seems like they’ve pulled it off. Many people love this soap dish for travel precisely because it’s vented and stops their soap bar from getting soggy but doesn’t leak water drips into your clothes.

If you’ve just recently had a shower it might be an idea to pack this in an outer pocket of your bag just in case. That way any drips that did escape the container would evaporate quickly.

  • It’s vented so your bar of soap can dry off
  • Water won’t spill on your clothes
  • It will still get messy inside the case and you’ll need to wash it every now and then
  • The case is significantly larger than the soap bar it holds

Carry-Dri made this video that shows their product.

Kiasona Travel Soap Case Box

best soap bar travel case

The Kiasona is a hard plastic soap box that fits a normal-sized soap bar.

The included band gives extra security that the case won’t open accidently but can be a little tight to get on and off.

Inside the case, there is a sponge that is designed to wick away moisture from the soap bar so that it retains its shape.

  • Airtight and doesn’t leak
  • Despite the sponge, the soap bar can still degrade and become a bit soggy

PUTING Portable Soap Saver

best soap bar travel case

The Puting brand of soap dishes is a more affordable option. You can get a pack of 4 soap dishes from the same price that other sellers charge for 1 dish.

That makes it a great option if you are taking more than 1 bar of soap on your trip, for example, a shampoo bar or a laundry bar.

It’s also economical if your traveling partner needs a soap case too.

  • Economical multipack
  • They don’t close airtight (although some people might view this as a pro)

Final Thoughts

The best travel soap case is a thing of personal preference. There is some innovation but most products are relatively similar. The ones we’ve looked at in this post give a fair representation of what’s on offer.

Top Product Overview

Top products, flatpak soap bar case.

Matador Soap Bar Case - Waterproof & Leakproof Bar Soap Travel Case, Quick Dry Soap Pouch for Standard Soap Bars, Shampoo Bars & Conditioner Bars

The FlatPak soap bar case is one of the lightest and smallest cases for soap you can get. It’s made from waterproof ripstop nylon and it features a roll-top with buckle closure, which ensures that the soap will never leak through the bag. On the other hand, the case allows the soap to dry through the fabric, so it never gets mushy.

In addition to being extremely waterproof , this travel soap case is also super lightweight and durable. Unlike the plastic soap cases, this won’t take up too much space in your toiletry bag. Also, because it’s made from fabric, you can fold it and manipulate it to fit into pretty much any pocket – if the soap bar can fit, then the case can as well.

This travel soap case is TSA-approved , which should make your time at checkpoints much shorter. Plus, it’s worth noting that the case is waterproof on both sides. The soap can’t leak through the bag, and water can’t penetrate the case from outside to make your soap all mushy and slippery.

When it comes to lightweight fabric soap cases, the FlatPak soap bar case is one of the best options available on the market. The only downside is the high price point, but it is one of those things that you will be buying for life, so I think it’s worth it.

  • Waterproof and leakproof
  • Very lightweight and packable
  • Extremely durable

Product Information

  • Material: Waterproof ripstop nylon
  • Dimensions: 4” x 2.4” x 1.3” max
  • Weight: 0.4 ounces

Snowkingdom 2 Pack Clear Travel Soap Box

Snowkingdom 2 Pack Clear Travel Soap Box Holder Case Container Leak Proof Shower Bathroom Home Outdoor Hiking Camping

The Snowkingdom pack of two soap boxes is a great option if you want something simple and affordable. The pack includes two plastic boxes and two little mesh bags that provide an extra layer of protection. The mesh bag absorbs water and residue, ensuring the soap bar doesn’t get mushy while it’s inside the container.

It’s also a great idea to leave your soap in the mesh bag while you’re using it since it can create lather quickly without making the soap too mushy. My mind was blown when I first tried this, so definitely check it out if you haven’t already.

Also, the inside of the box is ribbed, so the soap bar shouldn’t stick to the plastic even if you put it inside without the mesh bag. It’s worth noting that this specific soap container doesn’t feature a drying rack, so if you don’t use the mesh bag, the soap will get a little mushy. There aren’t any drainage holes either, so the box should stay completely leakproof as long as it’s intact.

The only downside of this soap box is that it can’t withstand a lot of abuse. If it gets thrown around a lot or squished too hard, the plastic will crack and the box will become useless. Luckily, you get two of these in the pack, so if one does break, you’ll have a backup at the ready!

  • Great value for money
  • Holds even Dove soap bars
  • Mesh bags included with containers
  • Plastic will crack under too much pressure
  • No drainage rack inside
  • Material: PP Plastic
  • Dimensions: 4.7” x 3.1” x 1.8”
  • Weight: 4 ounces

Quatish Travel Soap Holder

Quatish Soap Holder 2 Pack, Travel Soap Container with Lid, Portable Bar Soap Holder, Leakproof Soap Box with Perforations, Round Soap Dishes for Traveling, Camping, Gym (Green)

The Quatish travel soap case is a great option if you usually buy round soap bars. This round case is made from polypropylene plastic , so it’s very sturdy and durable. Also, the Quatish soap holder is actually sold in packs of two, so you’re getting great value for your money!

This soap holder features a layered design, with a drying rack inside that lets the soap drain and prevents it from sticking to the case. It’s very easy to dump any excess water from the case, plus this design ensures that the soap doesn’t get mushy and disintegrates inside the holder.

The case is waterproof and leakproof , so you can keep it in the shower. Also, although the case features a round design, it’s big enough to hold some smaller rectangular and oval soap bars. The soap holder is available in six colors, and no matter which one you pick, you’re getting two travel cases for less than $9!

  • The layered design ensures soap doesn’t get mushy
  • The round case won’t fit all square and rectangular soap bars
  • Material: Polypropylene
  • Dimensions: 3.74” x 3.74” x 1.57”

Kiasona 2Pack Travel Soap Box

Kiasona 2Pack Travel Soap Box,soap Bar Holder Dish Container Case with Sponge Saver&Silicone Band,Strong Sealing,Leak Proof,Portable,Best for Bathroom,Gym,School,Camping,Hiking,Vacation(Pack of 2)

The Kisaona travel soap box is another excellent option. It’s a plastic soap case that comes with a sponge inside, which is supposed to absorb any liquids to keep the soap from becoming mushy. It does an excellent job, but it does mean that there’s another part of the travel soap container that you need to clean after a few uses.

The plastic soap box features a removable lid that is held in place with a silicone band. The band is extra sturdy and does an excellent job at ensuring a watertight seal on the case. It won’t leak even when you turn it upside down, and it prevents water from seeping inside the case.

Would it hold up if you were to submerge the soap box entirely underwater? I’m not sure, but that’s not something you should be doing if you don’t want mushy soap anyway! When it comes to keeping the box in the shower, it should keep the soap completely dry until you take it out and use it.

This bundle includes two soap cases with all their accessories, and it’s very affordable. If you’re on a tight budget and you’re looking for a great deal, this is one of the best travel soap cases to buy!

  • The sponge keeps soap from becoming mushy
  • Takes a while to clean all the pieces
  • Material: Plastic and silicone
  • Dimensions: 4.6” x 3.3” x 1.8”
  • Weight: 4.6 ounces

Marlowe Travel Soap Holder

MARLOWE. No. 401 Travel Soap Case with Zipper Closure, 1 Portable Soap Holder for Bar Soap, Durable Soap Container for Traveling, Vacations, Camping & Gym

The Marlowe travel soap holder is a great option if you prefer a fabric soap case. It’s made from waterproof fabric and it features a zipper, so there’s no way this soap case can accidentally pop open. It’s both leakproof and waterproof, and it’s just the right size to hold a Marlow soap bar.

It can also hold other soap bars, and because it is fabric, you can even squeeze in a round bar in this case. The material is soft and plasticky, and it’s able to let the soap breathe so it doesn’t get mushy inside the container. Also, the material is slightly transparent, and the soap inside makes the case look a little grimy from the outside.

Although this case is a bit pricey for what it is, the high-quality materials and excellent performance make it worth every penny. It’s much more durable and reliable than a classic plastic case, and it should hold up for several years. The case is also very easy to clean – you just need to run it through the water to rinse off any residue and that’s it.

  • Durable waterproof zipper
  • Lightweight and packable
  • Easy to clean
  • Won’t fit bigger soap bars
  • Material: Waterproof fabric
  • Dimensions: 5.8” x 2.6” x 1”
  • Weight: 0.8 ounces

PUTING Plastic Soap Container

4pcs Plastic Soap Holder Container Soap Saver Box Case for Bathroom Shower Home Outdoor Camping Set of 4

The Puting set of plastic soap cases includes four soap containers , making it an excellent option if you need several of these cases. They’re all standard plastic travel soap cases with a drying rack inside and a PE lid that ensures a watertight seal on the box. The lid is flexible, so it’s very easy to put on, and it will not crack that easily under pressure.

The drying rack is a nice addition because you can keep your soap on it even at the hotel, and the bar will stay dry and not mushy. But you have to take it out of the container, otherwise, all the residue will collect at the bottom of the soap box, and it will be very annoying to clean.

It’s also worth noting that you should drain any water before you seal the box and put it in your toiletry bag. The drying rack works only when the box is in the regular position – turn it upside down, and all that water will get back on the soap and make it mushy.

The Puting travel soap case is large enough to hold even Dove bars, which is very convenient. It won’t be able to hold 9 and 10-ounce bars, but anything smaller than that should fit nicely in the container.

  • Great value
  • Drying rack inside
  • A flexible lid ensures a watertight seal
  • The plastic box can crack under pressure
  • Does not fit 9oz bars (and bigger)
  • Material: PP and PE plastic
  • Dimensions: 3.75” x 15” x 2.5”
  • Weight: 6.4 ounces

Foamie Travel Buddy

Foamie Travel Buddy with Removable Shelf - Innovative Travel Box to Help Keep Your Shampoo or Conditioner Bars - Silicone Seal Ensures No Spills On-The-Go - Eco-Friendly Packaging

If you use Foamie soap bars, this is definitely the best travel soap container to get. And even if you don’t use their bars, it’s worth checking out this eco-friendly case. It’s made from 80% wheat fiber and 20% recycled polypropylene, so it is entirely sustainable.

The travel container features a silicone band that guarantees a watertight seal , as well as a flexible drying rack inside, which prevents residue build-up.

The only issue with the Foamie Travel Buddy is that it is designed to fit Foamie bars specifically, so it’s not going to fit every bar of soap you can get your hands on. But if you want to get a product that’s affordable and 100% sustainable, this is your best option.

Also, it’s worth noting that the case is a bit difficult to open, which is a really good thing. It just means that it’s a lot harder for the lid to come undone accidentally, ensuring that the container will remain sealed no matter what.

  • Eco-friendly and sustainable
  • Watertight seal
  • Quite small – made for Foamie bars
  • Material: 80% wheat fiber, 20% recycled polypropylene, silicone
  • Dimensions: 5.24” x 3.35” x 1.57“
  • Weight: 1.8 ounces

Dr. Squatch Travel Bag for Bar Soap

Dr. Squatch Travel Bag for Bar Soap – Take Your Beloved Soap on The Road with This Super-Absorbent Drying Canvas Bag

The Dr. Squatch travel bag is specifically designed for this brand’s soap bars, so it’s by far the best option if you use them. Dr. Squatch soap bars are quite big, and they don’t really fit in most other travel cases.

This travel bag is made from heavy-weight burlap linen, which is extremely absorbent . It allows to soap bar to dry very quickly, so it doesn’t turn to mush when you pack it.

Also, the bag features a drawstring closure with an Egyptian Undyed Wetspun Warp, which has a higher tensile strength than even cotton. The entire soap case is very sturdy and reliable, and it’s absolutely perfect for Dr. Squatch bars!

It’s worth noting that the linen bag is not waterproof, so you shouldn’t keep it in the shower. Also, you should consider putting the soap case in a ziplock plastic bag, just to ensure that it doesn’t leak in your luggage.

  • Perfect size for Dr. Squatch soap bars
  • Absorbent material dries soap quickly
  • Not waterproof
  • Material: Burlap linen
  • Dimensions: 4” x 4”
  • Weight: 0.6 oz

What To Look For

Plastic or fabric.

Would you rather have a soap case made from plastic or fabric? Plastic soap cases are more common, and they’re generally the cheaper option. They’re usually waterproof and leakproof, but they can get crushed upon heavy impact. That won’t happen with fabric soap cases, since they are much more flexible.

Also, fabric cases are lighter and more packable, and they take up virtually no space in your bag when they’re empty.

The main advantage of a fabric soap case is that you can manipulate it to fit into smaller spaces. A plastic soap requires more space in your toiletry bag, so go with fabric if you usually struggle to close your bag. Also, fabric soap cases are a bit easier to clean, since you just need to wash them out to make them pristine again.

Another great thing about fabric soap bags is that you can fit bars of different shapes inside them. They’ll fit round and oval bars as well as square ones, while a square plastic container might not be able to hold a large, round soap bar.

What Soap Bars Do You Usually Use?

The travel soap cases featured in this review will fit most soap bars on the market. But, there are some brands that make extra-large soap bars, and those won’t always fit in the classic soapboxes. If you use a brand that makes really big bars be sure to check if they offer a travel case for their soap because that’s the easiest way to ensure that your bar will fit in the travel case.

Alternatively, you should look at the dimensions of each of the soap cases, and check whether they’re big enough to hold your favorite soap bar. Also, the shape of the soap bar matters. Most of the boxes featured here are square or oval because that’s the shape of most soap bars.

But if you usually use rounder soap bars as Dove makes, you’ll need to take a closer look at the dimensions to see if the bar can fit in the travel case you want. Or just get the travel case that’s the same shape like your favorite soap bar!

Best Travel Soap Case: Our Top Picks

Still not sure which travel soap case to get? Go with one of our top picks and you won’t have any regrets!

If you like the idea of a fabric soap case, the FlatPak is by far the best option out there. It’s entirely waterproof and leakproof, with Hypalon rolltop closure and a sturdy YKK buckle. Also, the fabric is breathable, and it will let the soap dry, so it doesn’t get mushy.

The soap holder is made from non-toxic polypropylene for excellent durability.

  • Set of 2 Clear Soap holder, Come with 2 pcs soap bag.
  • The snappy latch design allows the lids snap on with two pins securely, makes the soap box and liquid locked firmly and will not slip out while in your handbag or carry-on luggage

10 Best Travel Soap Cases: Traveler's Top Picks!

10 Best Travel Soap Cases: Traveler's Top Picks!

There's nothing worse than opening your luggage to find soapy dampness all over your clothes or electronics! Luckily, I discovered travel soap cases, which have really come a long way since their invention. Learn about some of my favourite picks...

best soap bar travel case

Today, soap is on almost every traveler's  packing list . Let's be real: even if you stay at a hotel that provides shampoo and soap, the free stuff is usually not that great.

I always like to take a favorite soap and shampoo bar with me for the start of a longer trip. Then I usually buy new ones locally to explore new scents. Why? I like that soaps and shampoo bars aren't as bulky as their liquid counterparts.

The only issue is storing them properly. You don't want wet soap bars in your luggage, especially not if you also have books and electronics in your backpack or suitcase. While a plastic bag would do the job, it wouldn't do it well.

Enter the travel soap case: The perfect solution to storing soap when traveling. In this article, I'll introduce you to 10 of the best travel soap cases and give you some helpful info.

How Do You Store Soap When Traveling?

I already mentioned that a mere plastic bag or wrap isn't the solution. So, what is it? There are two common ways to store soap while on the road.

Travel Soap Cases

The travel soap case, also called a travel soap container or box, is usually square, oval, or round. It can be made from plastic, metal, and other materials like bamboo. Plastic-free options are becoming more popular these days.

A travel soap case is made from a lower and upper half. The lower half sometimes has a separate soap dish in it. The two halves seal the case when closed so that no water escapes.

Travel Soap Bags

A good travel soap bag is a suitable alternative if you have nothing heavy in your luggage. A soap bag isn't as sturdy as a soap case, so your soap can easily be squashed, especially if it's still wet.

Some soap bags are cool though. I like  Travel Buddy's travel soap bag . It's awesome if you carry a  backpack  because you can attach it to the outside. This solves the problem of soap leaking inside your bag!

When Was the Travel Soap Case Invented?

Soap has existed for over 4,000 years, and soap dishes for at least 1,400 years. Soap containers from the 18th century already had important features for modern soap cases. They could be beautiful but weren't exactly made for traveling light.

It seems impossible to pinpoint the first-ever travel soap case. But it's safe to say plastic travel soap containers as we know them today haven't been around earlier than the 20th century.

What to Keep In Mind When Buying Travel Soap Containers

There are three important things to consider when choosing a suitable travel soap container.

3. Material

You don't want something flimsy. It must be strong enough not to be squashed by everything else in your pack.

Soaps can come in all sorts of shapes, usually round or square. Ensure you buy a container that suits the soap you use.

Buy a case that is just big enough to fit your soap. If the soap container is too big, your soap will move around too much, making the inside messy.

And if it's too small, you'll have a problem closing the container once the soap is in it!

10 Great Soap Storage Solutions for Travelers

10. best small travel soap case.

AUEAR's small portable soap container  is one of the smallest travel soap cases you can find. Each of the four cases is just over 7 cm long and wide. If you like the colors but need a slightly bigger case, the company also has a bigger case.

The cases are made from non-toxic, food-grade PP plastic and are lightweight.

Reasons to Like AUER's Travel Soap Case

  • Pretty colors
  • Ideal size for small bars of soap

9. Best Cool Design Travel Soap Case

Most travel soap cases are pretty boring, but there's a cool exception. I love these  Cactus travel soap cases . They're too cute!

Their looks aren't the only great point. They also have a self-draining soap dish, so your soap doesn't have to sit in water. Plus, they're made from quite sturdy plastic, so they'll survive the fall if you drop them!

Reasons to Like Cactus Travel Soap Cases

  • Awesome design
  • Comes in beautiful colors
  • Very sturdy

Buying Guide: Best Travel Soap Cases

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Feb 25, 2023 | Travel Gear , Travel Tips

When you are traveling, one of the most difficult items to take with you is bar soap.

Whilst it is fine straight out of the packet, once it’s used it becomes wet and messy, potentially affecting the other items in your toiletry bag.

The solution is to use a travel soap container .

A good travel case for soap is designed to protect both your luggage and the soap itself.

It should be made of durable material, seal tightly to keep in any leaks, and come with features that preserve your soap.

These can include things like ventilation holes, some type of insert to absorb additional water, or slotted trays to keep the bar elevated.

Not only do these design details stop your soap from turning into a soggy mess, but they also make the case much easier to clean when you get home.

Here is a selection of some of the best bar soap containers available and the features that make them so useful.

  • Kiasona Travel Soap Box: See on Amazon
  • Quatish Travel Soap Holder: See on Amazon

  • Bossman Travel Soap Container: See on Amazon

Before we start, let’s take a look at the things to consider when choosing the perfect travel soap container.

Travel Soap Case

How To Choose The Best Travel Soap Case

Choosing the perfect soap container for your travels shouldn’t be too complicated.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • A good travel case for soap should be leak-free! Nobody likes a leaking soap container, so pick something solid that won’t leak on all your precious things.
  • A good soap case should be light, and small. After all, nobody wants to waste space with a big soap case.
  • A good container for your soap should protect your soap bar so that you can use it again!

Travel Soap Case

MARLOWE Travel Soap Holder

This unique travel case for soap is sealed with a sturdy zipper, so you can be confident that it won’t leak.

It is the perfect size to pop into your backpack for trips to the gym and stows easily in your toiletry bag when you are traveling.

best soap bar travel case

The Marlowe travel soap holder is designed to accommodate all bar soaps from the MARLOWE range – and at 5.8 x 2.6 x 1 inches it is large enough to hold most large bar soaps.

The zipper runs almost all the way around the case, so putting in the bar is easy.

Soft and flexible, it is made from an easy-to-clean material that won’t discolor or become slimy over time, so it will always look as good as the day you bought it.

And unlike some travel soap containers that are made from brittle plastic, you can be confident that this case won’t crack. The zipper feels well made and sturdy, yet the entire case is lightweight enough to easily pop into your luggage.

You will also find the flexibility of this case useful for storage – when it is not in use you can just fold it and tuck it away ready for your travels in the future.

Kiasona Travel Soap Case

The designers of this soap travel case really thought of every little detail, making it the perfect accessory when you are on the go.

The sturdy box comes with a silicone band that wraps right around it, ensuring that the lid stays firmly in place and that there are absolutely no leaks.

best soap bar travel case

The Kiasona travel soap box also comes with an innovative soap mat that sits inside the holder, absorbing any excess water.

This is key to keeping your bar of soap in a good condition and preventing it from becoming mushy and soggy – a common problem with other soap containers.

It also makes it so much easier to clean than with other cases, where you tend to get quite a build-up of soap residue at the bottom. The entire unit feels very durable.

Whilst being tough, the plastic shell has enough flexibility to stand up to being tossed around in your luggage without cracking.

The lid fits very snugly and creates a nice, tight seal, but the strong silicone band adds an extra layer of security.

Gripping firmly to the material of the case, it is such a simple solution to the risk of the lid popping off whilst you are traveling.

Quatish Travel Soap Container

This Quatish bar soap container set comes with two cases, so it is ideal for when you are traveling with a partner.

Made from durable and non-toxic plastic, it is available in six different colors, making it easy to match with your other travel accessories.

best soap bar travel case

Each container is lightweight and comes with a slotted layer. This holds the soap out of any excess water that may be in the bottom of the case, allowing it to dry more efficiently and stopping it from becoming mushy.

This also makes the case much easier to clean at the end of your trip. It is well ventilated and comes with non-slip feet to keep it securely in place during use.

The lid is flexible rather than rigid, which makes it easy to put on or remove. It also means it can easily withstand the typical knocks and bumps associated with travel, without splitting or cracking.

When closed, the seal is extremely tight, so you can feel confident that no liquid whatsoever will leak into your bag.

Measuring around 4.6 x 3.3 x 1.9 inches, this travel soap container has plenty of room for most standard soap bars.

PORTINEER Carry-Dri MAX Bar Soap Holder

This cleverly designed soap travel case is perfect for the gym or to throw in your luggage when taking a trip.

best soap bar travel case

Available in blue, white, or a pack of two containing both colors, the Portineer case is constructed from a long-lasting ABS material that is designed to cope easily with being tossed into a toiletry bag and bumped around with your other accessories.

Its hinge feels incredibly strong and durable, plus it opens and closes smoothly. The case has a handy latch design that means it snaps securely shut when you close it.

The latch actually tucks inside one of the vents, which not only reduces the size of the case but also prevents it from unlatching accidentally. It also has a reliable silicone seal that you can depend upon to prevent any leaks.

Despite being so well sealed, this container also has a patented vent design so that your soap dries out properly after use. This stops it from becoming mushy or gooey, making your bar last longer.

Measuring 5.1 x 3.6 x 1.6 inches, this case is designed to hold most standard soap bars.

Bossman Travel Soap Case

If you are looking for a more rugged aesthetic, then this may be the best travel soap case for you!

With an attractive matte black finish and a distinctive logo, this case has such a slim design that it is perfect for your gym bag, backpack, or even your pocket!

best soap bar travel case

The Bossman travel soap container has a unique locking design that snaps tightly closed and feels secure, yet is easy to open when needed.

A great bonus is that the lid is designed to pop right up and stays up until you choose to close it again, which makes it ideal for one-handed use.

The simple addition of ridges at the bottom of the container keeps the soap slightly elevated, stopping it from sitting in a puddle of water.

This prevents it from turning into messy jelly and keeps the bar in good condition at all times, which helps it last longer too.

The plastic is every bit as tough and durable as it looks, so you don’t need to worry about the case cracking in your bag, whilst the enclosed design prevents any leaks and keeps the rest of your luggage totally dry.

Final Thoughts On Travel Cases For Soap

A good soap travel case will make it easy to take your bar soap anywhere without worrying about leaks or mess.

I hope this guide has helped you find the perfect soap container for your travels.

The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

The best travel soaps are multi-use, concentrated, and TSA friendly.

Travel soap – although it’s not something that often comes up in conversation when we’re travel-planning, we all use it. Whether we’re  packing for a safari  trip in Africa,  train travel in Europe , a  Peruvian journey  into the rainforest, a  Southeast Asian expedition , an  Australian Outback  tour, or  beach vacation , we rarely leave home without it. Because the amount of liquid we can fly with is limited, so are our soap choices. Since we value packing light, we’re always looking for ways the items we pack can do double duty. Soap is no exception.

Whether your soap preferences are liquid, bar, multi-use, eco-friendly, scented, unscented, or something entirely different, finding a version that travels well is important. If you’re like me, you consider how and where things are made, the environmental footprint we’re leaving, and the treatment of our animal friends in testing. And then there are those of us with allergies and sensitivities, doing our best to keep our skin happy at home and on the go. There are a lot of options for travel soap, but some products are definitely better than others.

Below are our picks for the best travel soaps – from bar to liquid to, yes, even those that do double duty as a detergent – and containers to pack them in.

best soap bar travel case

How to Choose the Best Soaps for Travel

I always knew there was a difference in scented and unscented soaps, but I had no idea there were so many different travel soap options. The range stretches from soaps that keep us clean or act as laundry detergent to shampoo, dish soap, and the multitaskers that do all of those things at once!

In today’s world, we check labels on the food we consume and the products we purchase. We’re thoughtful of the bigger picture, knowledgeable about the origin of things, and ethically conscious of carbon footprints. We intentionally allow our concern for humanity and the planet to affect our purchasing power. When choosing travel soap, look for:

  • Multi-use products
  • Organic, natural products
  • Products free of fragrances, dyes, parabens and preservatives
  • Essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances
  • Fair trade products
  • Biodegradable
  • Eco-friendly options
  • Anti-bacterial elements
  • Baby-mild/hypoallergenic
  • Concentrated soaps

When we travel, we’re careful in our choice of locations, tours, and even luggage . A  travel backpack  allows us to carry everything we need on our own two shoulders and under the seat in front of us. Why wouldn’t we choose travel soaps by the same criteria of portability and packability?

The Best Overall Travel Soap

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bronners.jpg

The best overall soap for travel is Dr. Bronner’s  magic soap. It consistently gets rave reviews from experienced travelers, including the members of Team Tortuga.

This multi-purpose, vegetable-based Castile soap can act as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and shaving cream, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, insect repellent, and more. Some people even swear by it as toothpaste. It tastes kind of gross.

Multi-use, available in both bar and liquid, concentrated, biodegradable, available world-wide, scented and unscented, fair trade, 100% organic, and not tested on animals; that’s hard to beat.

You can’t go wrong with this magic potion in a bottle or a bar. Buy the big one and take it in a GoToob, or buy it perfectly packaged to fly in a travel-size.

Concentrated & Biodegradable Travel Soaps

These eco-friendly options mean you use less and the soaps breakdown naturally, although they may still contaminate water supplies.

  • Campsuds : available in citronella, lavender and peppermint oil, this soap doubles as insect repellent.
  • Sea to Summit Trek and Travel Liquid Soap : concentrated, biodegradable, and paraben-free, this liquid soap works well for urban and outdoor adventures alike.
  • Lush concentrated soaps : this solid soap is vegan and unpackaged for eco-friendly measures, but also ultra-concentrated–so you get a lot of washes with just a little.

Best travel soap for kids

Hypoallergenic & Child Friendly Travel Soaps

If you’ve got allergies, sensitive skin, or are traveling with a child, you might need to use a  GoToob  to take a small amount of your favorite soap. Try these:

  • Dove Beauty Bar or liquid soap is hypoallergenic and widely available.
  • Neutrogena transparent facial bar is great for people with sensitive skin.
  • Babyganics is great for kids and babies.

best soap bar travel case

The Best Travel Laundry Detergents

Your body isn’t the only thing you need soap to clean while traveling. To wash your clothes on the go, these are the best travel detergents:

  • Laundry soap sheets (Travelon) : Great for hand-washing clothes in your hotel sink, these sheets rehydrate into soap with a bit of water. Since they’re sheets, they’re TSA-compliant, and super compact.
  • Sea to Summit Pocket Laundry Wash : Simply add water to one of these sheets to use as a liquid soap on your laundry.
  • Well Earth Sheets : These laundry detergent sheets come in a compostable package, perfect for zero-waste travel.
  • The Laundress Wash and Stain Bar : The Laundress specializes in soaps for different kinds of clothing, so it’s no surprise that they have a super-portable bar of soap you can use to wash clothes. Since it’s not liquid, it’s TSA-compliant.

Best all in one travel soap

The Best All-in-One Travel Soap Options

All-in-one travel soaps will do it all: hair, body, and face. They even work as travel laundry detergent in a pinch. While our favorite all-in-one travel soap is Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Soap , these are also great options:

  • Jack Black All-Over Wash : This liquid soap works as a face and body wash, as well as a shampoo.
  • Sea to Summit’s Wilderness Wash : this super-concentrated, all-purpose soap works as a body wash, shampoo, and even for washing clothes and dishes. It’s also biodegradable and safe to use outdoors.

best soap bar travel case

The Best Travel Soap Sheets

For an ultra compact soap option that’s not subject to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, try a travel soap sheet. Soap sheets rehydrate when wet to create suds to clean yourself with.

  • Soap Leaves (Lifeventure) : At roughly the size of a packet of floss, these little soap leaves pack about 50 washes in each container.
  • Buly 1803 : These compact, orange scented soap sheets suds into a full wash’s worth of body and face soap with just a bit of water.

Best travel shampoo

Waterless Shampoos & Shampoo Bars

Perhaps you’ve encountered the aerosol “dry shampoo,” but have you seen the no-rinse shampoo that’s a liquid (carry on sized, of course, that requires no water whatsoever? Just apply, lather, and towel dry. Yep. Really.

  • No Rinse Shampoo : For when you don’t have any water, use this no-rinse, no-water shampoo to clean your hair on the go.
  • Lush Shampoo and Conditioner Bars : Bar isn’t only for bodies. Lush’s shampoo and conditioner bars are like bar soap, for your hair. Like bar soap, they’re great for travel since they aren’t subject to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule.

Travel soap container

Best Liquid and Bar Soap Travel Containers

The best travel soap containers will be TSA compliant (for liquid soap) and leak-proof. For bar soap, they’ll ideally also provide a way for soap to dry, rather than sitting in a puddly mess.

Matador FlatPack Soap Bar Case ($13)

This fabric bar soap container is great for travel because it’s ultralight, compact, and won’t get crushed in your bag like a cheap plastic one. It’s also at once leak-proof and breathable – so your soap will dry inside, but not leak all over the inside of your luggage .

GoToob ($7+)

These reusable, silicon travel containers are our go-to for any liquid, gel, or cream – whether it’s soap, shampoo, or sunblock. They’re easy to fill, and even easier to wash between trips. You’ll find a range of TSA-compliant sizes.

Can You Bring Soap in Your Carry On ?

Yes, you can both liquid soap and bars of soap on a plane in your carry on . If you’re traveling with liquid soap, it must follow the  3-1-1 rule and be under 3.4 ounces (100 ml). You can bring bar soap of any size through airport security.

How to Pack a Bar of Soap

When traveling with a bar of soap, don’t just toss it in your toiletry bag. Invest in a reusable container like Matador’s FlatPack Soap Bar Case ($13) to keep it from getting all over your other items. Before you pack it, wipe it down with a towel to avoid any excess moisture in your case. When showering, rest it in a dry spot to help it last longer.

Packing Tips for Travel Soaps

  • Squeeze some of your larger liquid soap into TSA approved containers that are 3.4 ounces or smaller, like those by GoToob .
  • Pack concentrated soaps into contact lens cases.
  • Break down your favorite soap bars into smaller sizes to turn that bar soap into a travel-friendly size.
  • Adopt a multi-use soap, like Dr. Bronner’s , for all of your travel needs.
  • For those with sensitive skin, test a new soap at home prior to travel. Baby products are often a good choice for sensitive skin
  • Check products for allergens (for example coconut oil, argan oil, or other nut based).
  • Dr.Bronner’s is the best multi-purpose travel soap for body, laundry, and hair.
  • Consider switching to bar soaps to make room for in your liquids bag.
  • Use GoToob and Matador travel soap to pack your travel soaps.
  • When choosing a travel soap, look for a multi-use product that can double for hair and body, or even laundry.
  • Take your skin sensitivities into consideration and always test new soaps at home, before you travel.

Most travel soap cases on the market are rigid, solid plastic cases that are bulky to pack, which is less than ideal for one bag travel. Matador stepped up to create a solution to this problem, and it has arrived in the form of the FlatPak Soap Bar Case.

Matador claims these cases are totally waterproof while still allowing the soap to dry out—which sounds way too good to be true and may defy the laws of physics. They are also made from a flexible fabric, meaning they are easier to pack—another bonus.

Naturally, we were excited to take one of these on the road to see if it lives up to the hype! Check out the rest of the review below for all the nitty-gritty details.

Material & Aesthetic

We’re pleased to report that Matador has made some great choices on materials for these cases, creating a good balance between function and aesthetic.

The case is constructed with two pieces of strong Cordura® fabric that are welded together. They feel sturdy and lightweight at the same time.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case Ripstop Strap

There’s some ripstop nylon around the mouth of the case (the part you slip the soap into, which Matador refers to as the Hypalon® rolltop closure ) making it super strong here, with no chance of the case ripping open. We’re not entirely sure why anyone would be using that much force with a soap case, but hey—you won’t hear us complaining about some extra durability.

The inside is lined with a material that is proprietary to Matador. On the inside, it feels like a kind of rubbery tarp. We haven’t seen it before, but we can tell you what it does… Matador refers to this material as a “dry through technology” , claiming that it’s totally waterproof while still allowing the soap to breathe and therefore dry out. How does it do this, you might ask?

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case

Aesthetic-wise, Matador has gone for a subtle and stylish black on black. We like how they kept it slick and understated—it’s just soap case, after all. It should look good, but there’s no need to go overboard with the design and the black on black feels just about right.

As with other Matador products we’ve reviewed—such as the NanoDry Towels —the branding is subtle, so you know it’s Matador without the need to shout it from the rooftops. There’s a logo outline punched into the side of the main section, and a little black tag with a white logo on the bottom of the case.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case YKK Clips

To wrap up the materials, there is a strong YKK plastic buckle holding the case closed. Sometimes Matador will use SBS Hardware and Zippers, sometimes they use YKK. We’re a bigger fan of YKK, so we were happy to see that here.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case Is Easy To Close

These cases are really straightforward to use. You just slide your soap bar in, roll it up three times, buckle it, and you’re good to go. That will keep the soap contained and you can stow it in your pack.

The case is water tight (keeping the rest of your gear totally safe from your wet bar of soap) yet still breathable. And we can actually verify that it is breathable because the fragrance still somehow makes it through the fabric. Clearly, Matador has a few wizards on their staff because this thing is borderline magic.

We should add that the soap fragrance seeping through the fabric may be either a positive or negative, depending on whether you want your stuff to smell, well, soapy. In our testing, we found this to be a really great feature. It acts as a miniature air freshener for your bag, and it’s actually quite nice to open your pack and get a whiff of soap‚as opposed to say, yesterday’s socks or a funky mildew towel aroma. You could also plan strategically here and get some awesome smelling soap so you’re guaranteed to like the scent of your clothes.

And to reiterate—it allows the fragrance to permeate and the soap to dry out while being totally watertight, meaning your pack and all your gear stays totally dry.

Our advice to you here is to dab the soap off before putting it in the case. Reducing the amount of water will reduce the amount of gunk you need to deal with, and also help your soap dry faster and last longer. Just a quick wipe with a cloth or paper towel will be enough to get rid of the excess water, then you’re good to throw it in the case.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case Rolling Open

We did find one minor issue with the roll & clip system for closing this thing up. As it turns out, the case can actually fully unroll, even when clipped up. If it should ever unroll, it would be totally open at the top.

Now, we can’t imagine any circumstance where this would actually happen—we’re not sure what type of movements could possibly happen that would cause it to unroll—but we did want to point out that it is technically possible, which seems worth mentioning.

The important thing to know is that when closed, this thing isn’t technically “sealed” shut, it’s rolled up and held in place in a way that makes it watertight.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case With Carabiner

Back to the positive aspects of this buckle system! When it’s rolled and clipped up, the buckle forms a useful little hook. Sometimes in hotels and hostels you’re working with limited shelf space, so we found it useful to use a carabiner to hang it on a hook in the shower or bathroom.

That’s a big plus over the traditional “rigid” soap cases on the market, which are bulky and always require shelf space.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case With Soap

To check which types of soap fit in this thing, we tried out a bunch of different ones. We tested soaps from Dial, Kiehl’s and Tone, and found that they all fit inside without a problem. The case is pretty flexible, so as long as the soap you’re using is a traditional size and shape (sorry—those delicious, “life like” mango shaped soaps are probably not going to fit in here) you’re not going to have a problem.

This brings us nicely to our next point—the flexibility.

Because the case is made from a soft fabric (not a hard, plastic rectangle) it can take on the form of the soap that’s inside it. As you use your soap and it gets smaller, so does the soap case in your pack.

This is a huge advantage when trying to fit a bar of soap into your pack. We found it really easy to find a little slot to slide this thing into, regardless of how full the pack was. If you’re really trying to travel light, you can bring along a smaller soap and the case will pack flat around it, saving space and weight—an option you don’t have with traditional plastic soap cases.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case With Soap

But why bring soap at all? Don’t people travel with liquid soap these days?

Well, consider this—soap bars don’t count against your TSA liquid allowance. TSA allows each passenger a one quart-size bag of liquids to go into your carry on—with each item limited to 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters—and that’s all you get. Taking your soap as a bar frees up space that can be used for other liquids.

Another plus is that generally a soap bar will last a little bit longer than liquid soap while you’re on the road. If you‘re interested in checking out a soap bar we recommend for travel, look no further than the Lush Shampoo Bar . We have found the Lush bar to be super versatile—you can use it for your hair, your body, even laundry and dishes if you’re in a pinch.

Overall, this little case works well. It keeps your wet soap contained, somehow allows it to dry out, and has a few packing benefits that make it a lot easier to bring a bar of soap along on your travels.

Durability & Testing

At the time of this review, we’ve been testing the FlatPak for about a month from Barcelona to Detroit, with some pretty heavy use.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case At Pool

We have started to see some loose threads appearing on the side of the case, but as far as we can tell, the function of the case isn’t affected.

To keep it clean, it’s pretty easy just to flip this thing inside out. Give it a wash, let it dry and then flip it back to start using it again. Soap tends to get gunky, so giving it a clean every now and then helps to prevent build-up.

Since we mentioned earlier that this thing can technically unravel, it’s important to note that it has never unraveled on its own during our testing. The case stays watertight and there aren’t many situations we can imagine where forces would conspire to unravel your soap case! It’s just something that we wanted to bring up because it’s technically possible.

Overall, the FlatPak Soap Bar Case has held up well and we haven’t had any issues thus far. The good material choices—such as the reliable YKK buckle system and flexible fabric that fits your soap—make this soap case a simple but useful addition to your travel gear.

Travel Soap Case FAQs

It can be hard to know which travel soap case is the right one for you.

With all of the different options available, it's no wonder that you might feel overwhelmed. How can you be sure that you're making the best decision?

Don't worry, we're here to help! We've put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions about travel soap cases so that you can make an informed decision before buying.

1. What is the best way to care for a travel soap case?

The best way to care for a travel soap case is to keep it clean and dry. Make sure to wash it with soap and water after each use, and let it air dry completely before storing it away.

2. Can I put my favorite soap in a travel soap case?

Yes, you can put your favorite soap in a travel soap case as long as the bar is smaller than the case itself. Just make sure to tightly pack the soap so it doesn't move around too much inside the casing.

3. Will my travel soap case protect my soap from getting wet?

No, your travel soap case will not protect wet soap. In fact, it's actually recommended that you keep your soaps separate from each other while traveling – one in your toiletry bag and one in your luggage – just in case something happens to one of them.

4. How do I know if my travel soap case is leak-proof?

All of our current line of travel cases are leak-proof, but we cannot guarantee their waterproofness or that they will be 100% effective against leaks or spills; however, if you take the proper precautions (and keep your case clean and dry when not in use) it should protect your soap from water damage.  Ultimately, however, we recommend keeping a spare bar of soap in your luggage just in case.

5. Can I use my travel soap case for other items?

Yes, you can absolutely use your travel soap case to store other small items such as jewelry or coins. Just make sure that the item is dry and won't cause any damage to the inside of the case – if you're worried about it, we recommend using a separate pouch or plastic travel bag to keep it safe.

6. How should I store my travel soap case when not in use?

When not in use, it's best to store your travel soap case in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This will help ensure that the material remains intact and won't start to degrade over time. Additionally, make sure you give it a good rinse and let it air dry thoroughly before storing it away to prevent any bacteria or mold buildup.   With proper care, your travel soap case can last for years.  Enjoy the convenience of a clean and safe soap case on all your travels!

7. What kind of materials are travel soap cases made from?

Travel soap cases can be made out of a variety of high-quality materials such as plastic, silicone, or cloth. Depending on the material, they may have different levels of water resistance and durability – but no matter which one you choose, make sure to take good care so it can last for years to come.  Enjoy the convenience of a clean and safe soap case on all your travels!

A Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case Review for Travellers

by Anne Betts | Jan 27, 2024 | Luggage and Packing , Packing Light Travel Gear | 2 comments

matador-flatpak-soap-bar-case-review-for-travellers

Is the Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case just another gimmicky travel product? Is the cost warranted? Is a zip-top bag just as practical for a fraction of the price? From the first use, I became a fan, and now, many trips later, I’m still enamoured with this remarkable innovation. Here is my Matador Flatpak Soap Bar Case review .

Table of Contents

What is the Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case?

Features of the matador flatpak soap bar case, 1. advantages of the matador flatpak soap bar case, 2. does the choice of soap make a difference, 3. care tips, companion cases for shampoo bars.

Matador has designed a flexible, breathable, durable, waterproof case for bar soap that claims to dry the bar while it’s packed inside.

The case acts as a dry bag and is easy to use. Slide the bar inside, roll the top three times, clip the sides together, and pack it in your toiletries kit with the confidence that it won’t leak on anything else.

matador-flatpak-soap-bar-case-instructions

  • Measuring 4 x 2.4 x 1.3 in / 10.2 x 6.1 x 3.3 cm, the case accommodates most standard soap bars.
  • Weighing 0.4 oz / 11 g, it’s a lightweight alternative to hard soap cases.
  • It’s made of welded Cordura nylon lined with Matador’s proprietary material, ‘dry-through technology.’ It has a Hypalon® rolltop closure and a YKK® buckle closure.
  • It now comes in a choice of four colours.

Matador Flatpak Soap Bar Case Review

  • It allows a traveller to easily carry a bar of soap or shampoo while the bar dries in the case, prolonging bar longevity. Even if the bar is packed immediately following a shower, it’s dry and firm a day later without a hint of sogginess.
  • Unlike plastic soap bar cases or tins, the size of the Matador case decreases as the bar becomes smaller with use.

matador-flatpak-soap-bar-case-gets-smaller

  • Matador claims their case is three times lighter than most traditional plastic soap bar cases and six times more compact than most cases containing a 1-oz / 28-g bar of soap.
  • In my experience, soapy residue collects in a hard case. In contrast, in the Matador, only a little is left behind as a wet bar scrapes the entry point of the case.
  • It’s well made. After many years of use, mine shows no visible signs of deterioration or loss of effectiveness. A zip-top plastic bag can’t make similar claims, and there’s a danger of breaking or leaking. Because the Matador is built to last, it’s an eco-friendly alternative to limited-use plastic bags.
  • Because the case is breathable, fragrance from a scented bar wafts through the fabric, acting as an air freshener in a travel bag.
  • The case can be clipped to the outside of a bag or hung in a campsite shower or facilities with limited shelf space.

It might, depending on the size of the soap bar and the type or brand of soap.

My soap bar of choice is Dr Bronner’s Pure Castille Bar Soap . It’s larger than many brands. With a new bar, I can accomplish just two rolls of the top. Completing three rolls is a stretch.

matador-soap-bar-case-with-castille-soap

I find the Castille soap leaves a slight residue as it scrapes the opening of the case when it slides in wet. The rest of the case is virtually residue-free. Some consumers complain that the ‘dry-through technology’ isn’t as effective as some users suggest and that soap bars deteriorate faster. Perhaps this relates to the type of soap. That has yet to be my experience with a Castille soap bar.

Allow a soap bar to dry as much as possible before placing it in the case. If you’re short on time, dab the soap with a towel or cloth, or use a hairdryer on a cool setting to boost the drying process.

For a quick clean, wipe the case with a damp cloth. For a more thorough job, turn the case inside out, wash it, and let it air dry before using it again.

4. Pros and cons of the Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case

  • The lightweight, flexible fabric mirrors the size of the soap bar
  • It’s waterproof, with no leakages
  • The high-quality materials translate into durability and effectiveness
  • Cost (USD 14)

matador-flatpak-soap-bar-case-packaged

After experiencing the wonders of the Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case , I searched for a smaller pouch to carry shampoo and conditioner bars.

PUL (polyurethane laminate) is a breathable, waterproof fabric widely used in hospitals because it can withstand hot washes and is durable enough to last.  Unsurprisingly, it gained popularity as a protective waterproof layer in cloth diapers. Travellers have discovered it for containing wetness in a travel bag. Wet bags made of PUL help store dirty clothes, damp swimwear, cloth diapers, reusable menstrual pads, and solid soap and shampoo bars.

Mine are made entirely of PUL fabric from the seller EcoAdorable at the online marketplace, Etsy. They keep wet bars contained and bars dry during storage. Unlike solid sap bar cases, the size of the wet bags decreases as the bars become smaller with use. The different colours help distinguish shampoo bars from conditioner bars.

PUL-fabric-waterproof-pouches-etsy

The Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case is an ingenious invention for travellers on the move. When space and weight matter, the lightweight, flexible case does what it’s designed to do: dries a wet soap bar without affecting anything else in a toiletry kit. The price tag is a little steep, but it’s a worthy investment for a product that will last for years of travel. Besides, life’s too short to travel with slimy, mushy, soggy soap!

Great tip. I don’t usually travel with bar soap because it gets slimy and wet in a plastic container. This is a great alternative. Much appreciated!

The FlatPak™ Soap Bar Case is the lightweight and leakproof way to travel with bar soap. Soap bars dry through the material, so they never get mushy.

Customer Reviews

WHY WE BUILT THE FLATPAK™ SOAP BAR CASE

Bar soap is one of the best travel hacks going – a small bar lasts for weeks and there's no TSA liquid limitation. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to transport. Hard plastic cases are bulky, break easily, and drip soapy water in your bag. Ziploc bags don't leak, but they turn your soap into mush.

We built the FlatPak™ Soap Bar Case to solve all these problems. The crush-proof fabric design adapts to be the size of the soap bar inside. Our patented, breathable fabric and welded seam construction is totally leakproof, but it lets your soap dry inside the case so it never gets mushy.

- 3X* lighter than plastic soap bar cases - 6X** more compact than other soap bar cases (with 1oz bar of soap) - Dry-Through™ Technology lets soap dry through case so it's never mushy - Waterproof, welded construction - Adapts to size of soapbar as it shrinks - Hypalon® rolltop closure + YKK® buckle - TSA approved - U.S. Patent No. D896521 S - U.S. Patent No. 10788263 B1 *3 times lighter compared to most traditional plastic soap bar cases **6 times more compact when compared to most soap bar cases containing 1oz bar of soap

Weight: 0.39oz (11g) Dimensions: 4 H x 2.4 W x 1.3 D in (10.16 H x 6.1 W x 3.3 D cm), max

Fits standard size soap bars Fits all types of bar soaps, including shampoo and conditioner bars

Materials - Cordura® nylon with proprietary Matador® Dry-Through™ coating - Hypalon rolltop closure

Basic use instructions Rinse before first use. Put soap bar inside the bag, ensuring excess water does not get trapped inside. Roll the rolltop three times or more, bend and buckle the ends of the buckle together. Soap bar will dry through the bag. Bar soap will dry more slowly in humid environments. For best results, allow soap to dry as much as possible before stowing in bag. Keep bag exposed to open air (not in a confined space) while soap bar is drying inside Flatpak Soap Bar Case.

Cleaning instructions Hand wash your FlatPak Soap Bar Case with warm water and mild soap. Do not wash in a dishwasher or washing machine.

Dry-Through Technology: maximizing performance The wet soap will dry directly through the material without allowing any leakage. The drying performance will vary based on temperature, relative humidity, and other external factors. To maximize the speed of drying, please follow the suggestions below:

- Remove as much water and suds as possible from the soap bar before inserting it into the FlatPak case.

- Roll the top only 3 times to keep as much surface area of the case exposed to open air as possible. More exposed surface area will yield faster drying times.

- Keep the FlatPak case exposed to open air while drying. The drying time will be noticeably longer if you immediately put the case inside your dopp kit or luggage where there is no air circulating.

- Dry the outside of the FlatPak Soap Bar Case after you put the wet soap inside.

- Occasionally rinse away any soapy residue from the inside of the FlatPak Soap Bar Case to maximize performance of the Dry-Through Technology.

Leave No Trace principles When bathing in the outdoors, please take care to use biodegradable soaps and rinse soapy residue 200 feet from the water source.

Is the Flatpak™ Soap Bar Case waterproof and leakproof? Yes, both. The Soap Bar Case is fully waterproof, keeping water in or out of the case while still allowing soap bars to dry through the material.

How do soap bars dry through the material? In short, the Soap Bar Case is vapor permeable. This allows soap bars to dry out between uses to elongate their lifespan and deter bars from getting mushy.

Which soap bars will the case fit? All standard soap bars. If you prefer to travel with a bar that only comes in a very large size, we suggest cutting the bar in half.

How do I close the Soap Bar Case? Simply roll 3 or more times and buckle like a drybag.

Does this product have a warranty? Yes, this product is warrantied for 2 years.

Warning: This product can expose you to chemicals including DMF which is known to the State of California to cause cancer. For more information go to P65Warnings.ca.gov

"Great solution"

I've been using these soap bags for my soap and also dry shampoo and conditioner bars for a while now. I can put in the wet bars one day, and by the next day, or even that evening, the bar dry.

It really does keep the liquid water inside and allows the water vapor to escape. My gym bag has not had water in it from the soap and the soap is perfectly dry the next time I use it.

Why You Should Only Use Moscow Mule Copper Mugs With Stainless Steel Lining

Dec 01, 2017

Recently in the media there have been many articles warning the public of the dangers of drinking Moscow Mules and other cocktails out of copper mugs. With sensationalist headlines like “ Are Moscow Mule Copper Mugs Really Poisoning People?” you have good reason to be concerned and conduct your own research! As lovers of the traditional Moscow Mule drink and other cocktails served in a copper mug, we wanted to take this opportunity to dive into why it’s so important to always use a stainless steel lined copper mug like ours when enjoying your favorite cocktail.

The Origin of the Copper Mug

The Moscow Mule is a popular drink made of vodka, ginger beer, and freshly squeezed lime served over ice in a copper mug. It’s a refreshing cocktail that is said to have been invented in 1941 in a Los Angeles British Pub called Cock ’n’ Bull. Legend has it the owners of a vodka, ginger beer and copper mug company all found themselves in that pub on the same day lamenting about how slow their sales had been. Together along with the pub bartender, they devised a recipe for the Moscow Mule served in a distinctive copper mug. One of the creators traveled the US taking pictures of patrons drinking the cocktail with Polaroid cameras, a cutting edge invention of the day. As the Polaroids began to circulate, so too did the popularity of this novel cocktail. The Moscow Mule was born.

While originally the copper mug might have been paired with the Moscow Mule purely as a marketing gimmick, it turned out the mugs had some interesting properties that enhanced the popular cocktail. Copper mugs help keep cocktails cold for longer and with less ice than a typical glass. The copper in the mug also reacts with the lime and ginger beer to give the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail more of a ‘kick’. But as it turns out, the kick from the reaction between a pure copper mug and the ingredients of a Moscow Mule might actually be detrimental to your health!

Why Copper Mugs Without Stainless Steel Lining Are Dangerous

copper mug filled with liquid and ice placed on a glass coaster

While copper is an important essential mineral, it is also a heavy metal that reacts with acidic liquids such as cocktail ingredients. Any acidic drink will corrode the copper contained in a mug without a stainless steel  lining, which will then leach back into the drink and increase the level of copper consumed.

In some cases, you may be able to detect a metallic taste in your drink, which can provide a warning that there is too much copper in your drink and that you should not continue drinking it. However, in some cases, the flavors in your cocktail may mask the presence of excessive copper in the drink, thereby leading you to believe that your drink is safe.

The rate at which copper will leach into a drink depends on a variety of factors including the acidity level of the drink, its temperature, the quality of the copper mug, and the length of time the drink remains in the mug – but there is no doubt that copper leaching is inevitable in any copper mug that does not have a protective stainless steel  lining, and there is no doubt that the leaching process begins immediately upon contact.

How acidic does a drink need to be before you should be concerned about having it in a copper mug? According to a recent report released by Iowa’s Alcoholic Beverages Division, and in keeping with Food and Drug Administration guidelines, copper should not come into contact with acidic foods with a pH below six. The pH of a traditional Moscow Mule, along with many of your favorite beverages, is well below 6, largely as a result of the alcohol and other acids contained in the cocktail.

The term pH refers to the acidity or alkalinity of liquids and is expressed on a scale of 0 to 14. Liquids with a pH below 7, like lemon juice, are considered acidic while liquids with a pH above 7, like liquid soap, are considered alkaline. Liquids with a pH of 7, like water, are considered neutral. Liquids like wine, beer, fruit juice, soda, tea (and even water with a dash of lemon in it) all have pHs well below 6. In short, the only safe use of a pure copper mug is for drinking water, which has a neutral pH.

Accordingly, if you use a copper mug that is not lined with stainless steel  with any drink that is even slightly acidic, the acidic fluids in your drink will cause a chemical reaction which will literally cause you to ingest large amounts of copper, leading to an unhealthy and potentially dangerous concentration of copper in your body.

The matter is so significant that the Food and Drug Administration has prohibited food or drink with pH levels below 6 from coming into contact with copper at licensed premises like bars or restaurants. The Food and Drug Administration also requires that anyone serving beverages through pipes must ensure that sufficient mechanisms are in place to ensure that copper is prevented from leaching into the drinks.

High concentrations of copper are very poisonous and have caused various food borne illnesses. Symptoms of copper poisoning include abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and jaundice, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health . In fact, in one report published in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers discovered an outbreak of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea among party-goers who had consumed cocktails at a party that have been sitting in copper cocktail shakers. The researchers determined that the concentration of copper in the drinks caused symptoms of chemical food poisoning precipitated by the consumption of alcohol on an empty stomach.

While one drink from a copper mug without stainless steel  lining won’t kill you, long-term exposure can pose serious health issues such as liver problems and low blood pressure. In some cases, severe copper poisoning can cause liver failure and death.

This recent report comes as no surprise to chefs and food scientists who have, for centuries, known to never use copper cookware with acidic recipes like tomato sauce. Beyond the negative health effects, using copper cookware with acidic foods results in metallic tasting recipes. No thanks!

However, while copper cookware has been used for centuries, the use of copper mugs with cocktails such as the Moscow Mule is a relatively new phenomenon and has only recently achieved widespread popularity. As a result, the health risks of using copper mugs without stainless steel  lining have not received the same attention until now.

The Solution: Stainless-Lined Copper Mugs

The good news is that not all copper Moscow Mule mugs are created equal. Some are lined with stainless steel , including our copper mugs . Why is stainless steel  lining so important? In short, unlike copper, stainless steel does not corrode or otherwise react when put in contact with acidic liquids. As a result, a cocktail or other drink enjoyed in a stainless steel   lined copper mug will not experience any copper leaching, which means that your health is fully protected!

In fact, Iowa’s Alcoholic Beverages Division recommends that if bar and restaurant owners are going to use copper mugs for acidic drinks such as the Moscow Mule, then they should use copper mugs lined with stainless steel  in order to avoid copper leaching.

In order to protect the health of our customers, we specifically choose to only manufacture and sell copper mugs made from 100% pure high-grade and food-safe copper with an inner layer of high-grade stainless steel . As a result, you can enjoy your favourite cocktail in one of our copper Moscow mule mugs for years to come without worrying about copper poisoning or other negative health effects.

Cocktails from our Moscow Mule mugs taste pure and fresh. Like the original Moscow Mule mugs, ours are also great insulators that help keep your drink cold and frosty. The stainless steel lining in our copper mugs also has an added functional benefit. In particular, because copper is a very soft metal, it can become damaged by repeated use. Stainless steel plating increases the strength and durability of your copper mug and greatly extends its life!

Cleaning your stainless steel  lined copper mug is simple. Clean the inside of your copper mug with warm water, soap and a soft cloth and dry it immediately. Be sure to never wash your copper mug with detergents or in a dishwasher. The exterior of the mug will naturally patina over time, which many of our customers enjoy. If you wish to remove the patina, simply sprinkle a pinch of salt on a slice of lemon, allow the salt to dissolve, and then gently rub it on the surface of the mug. The lemon and salt will form a mixture that will naturally remove the patina and restore the copper’s shine. Once done, rinse with water and dry well.

Two Top Moscow Bars for Views

Red Square in Moscow

There’s no way around it, Moscow is pricey, and its nightlife scene is no exception – if you’re intent on painting the town red (you are just steps from the Red Square after all!), you might as well get something more than a cheap vodka buzz for the cost of your drink.

While you might not be able to dole out the big bucks for the pricey digs at these two swank Moscow hotels, there’s nothing keeping you from sampling their crowning glories. Each boasts a rooftop bar with prime panoramic perches, where, for the cost of a splurge-worthy cocktail, more budget-friendly brew, or simply a stiff drink, you can rub elbows with a motley mix of moneyed Muscovites (business tycoons, Kremlin bigwigs, celebs and pseudo-celebs – which, while I was there, came in the form of members of the Russian national soccer team), and lap up mesmerizing Moscow views that are even more intoxicating than your drink.

Mix Moscow Cityscapes with Cocktail Creations by a Master Mixologist

High above the distinctive glass-and-steel tower that houses the city’s top-rated Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy hotel, the stylish, 34th-floor City Space Bar mixes sweeping 360-degree city views (courtesy of wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows) and masterfully crafted cocktails. Helmed by renowned mixologist Bek Narzi (who brings world-class bartender skills from his past gigs at top London watering holes), the menu spans a variety of unique cocktails (classic, molecular, mocktails). Try the Moscow Spring Punch, a lip-smacking blend of vodka, fresh raspberries, honey, homemade ginger ale, and lime. Each month, the bar also hosts special appearances by celebrity guest bartenders from around the globe (like NYC mixologist Brian Miller, headlining this month), and DJs spinning nightly (except Sundays). Opens 5pm daily; no cost for entry or minimums required for table reservations; beer and spirits from $10, cocktails from $23.

Put on the Ritz and Nab Killer Kremlin Views

Set just a stone’s throw from the Kremlin, the lavish Ritz-Carlton Moscow ’s 12th-floor rooftop O2 Lounge boasts breathtaking views over the Red Square, Kremlin towers, and the city's signature onion-shaped cathedral domes. Capped by a glass-and-steel dome, which lets the light in (and keeps the cold out during chillier weather), the space-age, design-savvy space is accented by dangling Fabergé egg-inspired chairs, mod white leather chairs, and Bohemian crystal hookah pipes; during warmer months, the spacious outdoor terrace beckons with a grill and dance floor, too.

The colorful cocktail list sources natural ingredients (i.e., freshly squeezed juices, berries, etc.). Try the Red Square, a blend of vodka, rosemary, raspberry, lime juice, and vanilla syrup. If you’re prepared to splurge, pair your drink with selections from one of Moscow’s top sushi joints (fish are flown in from the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo). An extensive champagne list might be worth reviewing for the free show: buy any bottle of champagne (starting from a whopping $259), and be treated to a complimentary “sabrage,” a ceremonial sword-opening spectacle. The hotel can also arrange a private vodka tasting led by the in-house “vodka sommelier” to help guide you through a small sampling of Russia's favorite liquid pastime ($113 per person). Open daily from noon; no cost for entry or minimums required for table reservations; beer and spirits from $11; cocktails from $27 .
