Here are the winners of the inaugural Poynter Journalism Prizes
The awards continue a 45-year tradition that was most recently headed by the news leaders association..
Poynter announced Tuesday the winners of its inaugural journalism contest, continuing a tradition that was most recently headed by the News Leaders Association.
The Poynter Journalism Prizes saw over 525 entries from more than 300 news organizations and individual journalists. The contest was open to work across all platforms, including digital and broadcast, and featured 10 categories focused on different aspects of writing, reporting and leadership. Winners will receive a cash prize of $1,000 or $2,500, depending on the category.
âThe judges were faced with a problem that the journalism industry can be truly proud of â it was really hard to select winners because there were so many high-caliber choices,â Poynter president Neil Brown said. âThe Poynter Journalism Prizes honors great journalism that makes a difference and we find it in all kinds of news organizations and in a diverse range of communities. That’s good for society and it bodes well for the media business.â
This yearâs contest featured one new category honoring short-form journalism . Named after retired Poynter faculty member Roy Peter Clark, the Clark Prize was awarded to Dallas Morning News public safety reporter Maggie Prosser for a 425-word story about a mother who lost her daughter to fentanyl poisoning.
The Morning News was also named a finalist in the writing excellence category for its work covering the Allen, Texas, mall shooting . Poynter hosted the prizes for the first time this year after the NLA decided last year to transfer its awards program to the Institute. The NLA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to newsroom leadership, diversity and First Amendment issues, had run a journalism contest since 2019. But financial challenges forced the associationâs board to vote in October to dissolve the organization and transfer its assets â including the NLA Awards â to other nonprofit journalism groups.
The NLA Awards got its start after the American Society of News Editors and the Associated Press Media Editors merged in 2019 to form the NLA. Previously, the ASNE had run its own journalism competition. Most of the Poynter Prize Journalism categories come from the ASNE Distinguished Writing Awards, which began in 1979.
Though this is the first year Poynter has run the contest, it used to host the judging for the ASNE awards and published a book each year compiling winning entries. The ASNE awards were also inspired by Eugene Patterson, who served as ASNE president and Poynterâs chairman.

Passion in a Pandemic: Judging the Business Travel Journalism Awards 2020
November 18, 2020
By Amanda Cumine Director, Global Corporate Communications
It has been both painstaking and an honour to judge the âOscarsâ equivalent for business travel journalism - the Business Travel Journalism Awards 2020 (BTJAs). In a year where demand for sources of trusted information, news and insight has soared â the task of selecting winners amongst a sea of outstanding individuals and teams that have so greatly contributed to the business travel media landscape has been a tough gig.
Now in its 17 th year and open to journalists globally, this yearâs awards attracted high-calibre entries from Singapore to County Kildare and Queensland to New York, with a 22% increase in category submissions versus the last year, across all ten categories. Whilst many of the entries centred around the pandemicâs impact on our industryâs health, wellbeing and resurrection, there was a healthy dose of COVID-unrelated scoops, campaigns and front-page splashes too, all of which showed the tremendous work the press is carrying out throughout this difficult time.
This yearâs 12-strong judging panel â made up of business travel heavyweights, ranging from communicators to consultants and buyers to suppliers â virtually reviewed 153 entries and 258 associated articles throughout October. Looking through the submissions was like digging through a goldmine of inspiring journalism. And deliberating over every entry, impartially and fairly scoring each against set criteria and ultimately agreeing on the ten BTJA 2020 winners saw the panel collectively rack up 132 (approx.) of judging hours.
During the judging process, it was a sentence in one award entry that for me, nailed the essence of why - especially during (and hopefully sometime soon coming to the end of) such a tough period â we need to celebrate the best of the amazing journalism which has come out of it:
â This subject was (SIC) important to our niche audience - or at least it was important until Covid came along and made so many prevailing concerns in our BC (Before Coronavirus) world pretty redundant .â
So, my congratulations go to every single entrant, short lister and winner of this yearâs BTJAs. Itâs been a privilege to be a judge this year, allowing me to understand the graft, pride and passion poured into each and every article submitted.
For more info on the winners, check out this video.
