From island hopping in greece to hiking in scotland.

Romance beckons all across Europe . And how could it not, given its landscape is dotted with fairytale castles, intimate restaurants, majestic landscapes, and endless cobblestoned streets? All romantic vibes aside, its many destinations often offer the best of both worlds—relaxing stretches of beaches and buzzy city atmospheres—in a single trip.

While the continent presents endless opportunities for exploration a deux, read on for five trips every couple will enjoy.

Enjoy history, culture, and wine in Tuscany

The Tuscan landscape never fails to inspire romance given its abundance of sunshine and wine. Florence teems with high culture and sublime cuisine. Stand in front of “David” at the Galleria dell’Accademia and “The Birth of Venus” at the Uffizi and dine at Gucci Osteria —helmed by three-Michelin-starred executive chef Massimo Bottura—in a single day. Admire the terracotta-tiled surroundings in Siena , where a bi-annual horse race is held along the top of the 13th-century Piazza del Campo ’s shell-shaped slope. To escape the crowds, island hop to Elba, where swimmers can take a dip in pristine waters, hikers can explore trails with Mediterranean views, and history buffs can check out Palazzina dei Mulini , Napoleon’s home during his exile on the island. Back on the mainland, Tuscany boasts dozens of vineyards, including the coastal Terre del Marchesato in Bolgheri , reached through an avenue of 400-year-old cypress trees; Antinori , a modern facility known for its Chianti Classico and nestled in the heart of Chianti country; and the less-visited Montecucco wine trail, located on the slopes of Monte Amiata .

Where to stay

Book a room at COMO Castello del Nero , a 12th-century castle-turned-luxury hotel that specializes in wellness. Renaissance-era frescoes and rolling hillside views across the 740-acre estate will vie for your attention. Expect inventive Italian cuisine at the on-site Michelin-starred La Torre . Bespoke treatments at COMO Shamballa Retreat take the holistic route, while manicured gardens inspired by French designs serve as the backdrop for yoga and Pilates classes.

Two people hiking a trail in Glencoe, Scotland

Take in the mystical scenery of the Scottish Highlands

Writers, artists, poets, and painters have been inspired by the ethereal beauty of the Scottish Highlands for generations. Using Inverness as a base, couples can traverse the verdant landscape across a plethora of hiking trails, including the 1.5-hour loop around the Shieldaig peninsula and Fisherfields Round, a more strenuous, multi-day route through a region known as “The Great Wilderness.” Nearly 50 whisky distilleries are spread across the region, and fans of the spirit should opt for a tasting tour at spots like Glenturret , the region’s oldest distillery dating to 1775, and the ever-popular Glenmorangie . Hearty Scottish meals in cozy restaurants are the perfect antidote to the Highlands’ often chilly weather, as illustrated by The Struy Inn , a 19th-century country restaurant where Highland game, flowing whisky, and a wood-burning fireplace make for a delightful evening.

Set in a 19th-century hunting lodge, The Torridon channels a Scottish country manor with blazing fires and views of the brooding sandstone mountains and endless pine forests. The onsite restaurant, 1887 , has a pine-paneled dining room that serves as a handsome backdrop to an elevated menu featuring local game and seafood. The hotel can also arrange activities including guided mountain biking, clay pigeon shooting, and archery.

Couple enjoying sunset from a high cliff over famous Navagio shipwreck beach. Zakynthos, Greek Islands, Greece

Island-hop your way through Greece

With 227 inhabited islands, picking which Greek islands to visit can feel overwhelmed—and while you can’t go wrong, there are a few that are perfect for a romantic getaway, depending on your interests. First up is Mykonos , a party hub with a buzzy club on every beach. The glam Jackie O’ on Super Paradise Beach serves champagne cocktails, while Soho House’s Scorpios has a more rustic vibe with sunset meditations before the DJ starts spinning. For a special spot just for two, the island of Santorini hits all the right notes with stunning sunsets and intimate eateries. Head to Roka , which sits on a clifftop terrace with endless sea views. Meanwhile, Crete is known for its spa resorts, and Blue Palace offers wellness menus along with secluded suites equipped with private infinity pools. For the ultimate escape, though, make your way to car-less Hydra where people get around on foot or by donkey. Each corner of the island feels far removed from the world, from quaint trattorias such as Il Casta to quiet beaches like Vlichos where loungers snooze under thatched umbrellas and the limitless Mediterranean views make you feel like the only two people in the world.

The quiet Four Seasons in Hydra is a haven where pine trees canopy over the property. Enhancing the romance are a handful of suites with warm, minimalist décor; a private garden; and a veranda with a fireplace and views across the sea.

The Alhambra and Albaicin in Granada, Spain

Drive down the Spanish coast

A drive across southern Spain ranks high on the list of most romantic road trips thanks to the endless sunshine, dramatic landscapes, and mesmerizing history around every turn. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is home to the sprawling Alhambra , where hilltop palaces with reflecting pools and verdant gardens alight the imagination. Andalusian splendor can be found in Córdoba , about two hours away, where a preponderance of Roman and Islamic architecture—like the bridge across the Guadalquivir River and the Mezquita-Catedral , formerly a mosque—stands today as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Sensuality reigns in Seville , a 1.5 hour drive from Córdoba, where bullfighting and flamenco go hand-in-hand. And even more archeological treasures exist in coastal Cádiz , one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe that sits 1.5 hours west of Seville. Be sure to explore the 100 watchtowers that were once used to keep an eye out for incoming ships.

The Hotel Sacristia de Santa Ana in Seville is home to quirky details like furnishings hand painted with pastoral scenes and overset with toile de jouy fabric. Appreciate the tiny details, such as the shapes of stars carved into the ceilings, and take advantage of its enviable location in the center of town.

Vineyard full of green grapes in Montagne de Reims, France

Sip your way through the Bordeaux wine country

Bordeaux intoxicates in more ways than one. Aside from its fame as a wine capital, the region boasts architectural masterpieces like the Place de la Bourse , natural wonders like the English-inspired 18th-century Jardin Public , and sumptuous flavors at Michelin-starred eateries such as Le Pavillon des Boulevards . The main draw, of course, are the wineries. It’s hard to go amiss, but two highlights include the 13th-century Chateau d’Agassac , complete with a dreamy castle and wine-paired dinners, and the Jean Nouvel–designed cellar at Chateau La Dominique from where Merlot-based reds—along with rich French cuisine and astounding views—can be enjoyed at the top-floor Terasse Rouge restaurant .

Nowhere is Bordeaux's romance more evident than at the InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hotel . The 1920s landmark drips with neoclassical decadence and rooms are festooned in jewel-toned hues, mahogany furniture, and copious gilding, overlooking monuments like the Grand Theatre . The ultimate spot is the hotel’s Roman grotto-inspired swimming pool where a mythological creature’s head shoots out a water stream and red, blue, and gold columns add grandeur.

The South of France, and particularly the French Riviera is a top European travel destination and definitely a great place for a romantic getaway with your partner.

4. Rome, Italy

top places to travel italy

It’s time to bring a major European capital to this list of romantic getaways across Europe, and it’s not the one you might have thought, is it?! 😉

To me, Rome is one of the best and most romantic cities you can visit in Italy and one of the best places to visit holding hands with your favorite person. There is no other city so full of culture and history quite like Rome.

Romantic couples activities in Rome:

  • take a Vespa ride through the city
  • visit the Colosseum and walk in the footsteps of ancient Romans through the  Roman Forum
  • toss a coin into the world-famous  Trevi Fountain

5. Paris, France

paris romantic holidays for couples

Ok, feel free to roll your eyes at me right about now. Of course you know Paris is one of THE most romantic getaways in Europe, nothing new here. But that’s exactly why I couldn’t leave it off my list.

Even though I much prefer Rome or Venice, there is just something about the Parisian charm that can’t be denied.

It was also one of the first destinations Marius and I traveled together as a couple.

Paris is perfect for a romantic couples getaway with so many wonderful things to do and see. Here are some ideas.

Romantic couples activities in Prais:

  • walk through the Jardins de Tuileries
  • kiss on top of the Eiffel Tower
  • take a romantic boat ride on the Seine

6. The Loire Valley, France

loire valley castles chambord

The Loire Valley is an incredibly romantic destination to explore with your partner.

The region is maybe not as famous as the French or Italian riviera, but it has SO much to offer. I’ve had it on my bucket list for many years and I was so happy to be able to explore it recently.

The Loire Valley is located in central France, along the river Loire and it is easily reachable within a 2,5-hour drive from Paris.

Romantic couples activities in the Loire Valley:

  • visit the glamourous castles in the Loire Valley : Chateau Chambord, Chateau de Chenonceau, and Chateau Amboise
  • have a wine tasting- the region is renowned for its white wines

7. Lake Como, Italy

bellagio italy romantic couple holidays

The Como Lake region is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy and I’m sure it’s already all over your Instagram feed.

Whether you’ve had this stunning place on your travel bucket list for a while or maybe just started looking into it, there are SO many romantic things to do in Lake Como .

The beautiful villas bordering the lake, the fairytale villages like Bellagio or Menaggio, and the scenic boat ride will delight you and your partner and make you want to come back for more.

  • visit the gorgeous Villa del Balbianello – a famous spot for weddings or romantic dates at Lake Como
  • enjoy a gelato by the lakeside at Menaggio

8. Positano, Italy

dream places to travel

Positano is one of the most beautiful places on the Italian Amalfi Coast, with spectacular mountain rocks and houses bordering the blue Mediterranean sea.

Just like Capri, Positano is a VERY popular destination for honeymooners from all over the world but also a romantic weekend getaway destination for Europeans.

If you are planning a day visit, make sure to arrive early –  LIKE VERY EARLY MORNING,  especially in summer, as parking in Positano is a nightmare. By 8-9 AM, most parking spots close to the beach are already taken.

Should that happen, you need to be prepared (both mentally and physically) for  A MILLION stairs  leading down to the village and the beach. It is completely worth the effort though. 😉

Romantic couples activities in Positano:

  • rent a boat and enjoy the stunning views along the Amalfi Coast
  • take a trip to Capri
  • explore the old town

9. Bruges, Belgium

bruges belgium romantic getaways europe

Ok, let’s leave Italy for a while and head North towards Belgium and the beautiful city of Bruges .

You will absolutely love discovering the old cobbled stone streets, the gingerbread-looking houses, and the winding, romantic canals through the city center.

Bruges is located in the Northern part of Belgium and can be reached within a 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Brussels or 1 hour by train.

My favorite thing about Bruges is the chocolateries ! They are everywhere and lure you in with free samples of the most delicious chocolate you have ever tasted!

There are even chocolate tours organized, check them out here .

10. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

amsterdam netherlands canals

Let’s now go even more North to The Netherlands, and its capital Amsterdam, before getting back to more Italian romantic destinations. 😉

I know what you might be thinking: Amsterdam and romantic getaways don’t really go hand in hand. Amsterdam is more like fun, sexy bachelorette parties or girlfriends’ trips.

You’d be surprised to know that Amsterdam can actually be an incredibly romantic city and I totally recommend it for a couple’s getaway.

There are so many wonderful things to do here (I would know, been living in Amsterdam for the past 10 years).

You are going to love Portofino! This stylish little resort located in the Liguria Region is Itlay at its best: stunning views of the Mediterranean coast, colorful old buildings, and gorgeous villas. It reminds me a little bit of  Positano and that Amalfi Coast vibe .

  • go up the hill to  St. George Church  for some stunning views of the village from above

Europe is a buzzing place that has a lot to offer to anyone who is seeking something special. For couples, visiting some of these romantic destinations in Europe is a healthy way to spice up the relationship and as well to enjoy a relaxing time away from reality, and escape the stress we get from our busy careers.

To put it lightly, we need holidays before we go crazy. Anyone who is in the workforce would understand the value of having a nice time off from everything an essential part of life, may it is a couple’s vacation, solo travel , or adventuring with friends.

But this post is for lovers. Therefore, these romantic destinations in Europe are just a few of the many places you can check out when you travel to this beautiful continent. Also, note that these places are perfect for your European honeymoon if you’re still unsure where to go after the big day!

On a personal note, my partner and I try to go on a holiday together at least once a year at least a week-long (and some quick, cheap romantic getaways here and there). And of course, as usual,  a relaxing holiday for couples such as a nice trip to Nice or Malta is usually what we normally opt for.

We are lucky enough to be based in Finland , and by law, we both have four or five weeks paid holiday in one year from work sans the bank and national holidays (which we use for quick romantic getaways in Europe when we can). We both think it is only fair to spend a fraction of our time offs together and decide on our own what we want to do with the rest of the vacation time.

I’m happy with this compromise because I love traveling on my own or with friends, too. But yes, we do go on short romantic breaks for couples to some of the romantic places we can think of when we can and not necessarily just on our summer holidays or times off!

We’ve spent a long weekend in Tallinn to spice things up. Also, not to mention, visiting Europe all year round is possible and though most people prefer to visit during the high season, which is In summer and  visiting Europe . For instance, winter in Scandinavia is stunning, and apart from that, you also have the opportunity to see some of the world’s natural marvels – the aurora borealis or even better, sleep in an igloo hotel and watch the sky change color before bedtime.

Honeymoon in Europe is never complete without experiencing at least one unique activity you can only find on this continent, so for a romantic escape to wonderland, make sure to look into some of the awesome things you can do in each destination you have your eyes on.

That said, romantic city breaks in Europe depend on what you and your partner both love. Ribeauvillé, France

By Mark from Wyld Family Travel

Ribeauvillé, romantic destination in France

Ribeauvillé from the outside seems to be hidden in fields of Vineyards that surround this medieval village. For couples, Ribeauville is a romantic destination with its cobblestone streets, romantic restaurants, and intimate walks through fields of grapes and historic castles.

The main street is lined with restaurants, bakeries, cellar doors, and medieval cobblestones. It is the perfect romantic setting for any honeymoon in France.

Sipping the region’s fine wine and eating the artisan foods of the region is one of the highlights of any trip to the Alsace region of France.

On the hill directly behind the town, you will find  Castle Saint-Ulrich , Castle Girsberg, and Haut-Ribeaupierre . These Ribeauvillé landmarks can be accessed via a walking trail from the center of town. Stroll from shop to shop from wine house to wine house tasting and buying local goods, taking in the timber houses from the 16th century, and stopping to admire one of the few fountains that adorn small squares in the town.

At Christmas time the town holds a very popular Christmas mark in December with the main street turning into a Christmas wonderland of types.

If you want to experience Ribeauvillé like a local head off the main streets and find some local establishments such as Gorman Drinks where the locals drink and eat.

You can stay at one of the many picturesque apartments in town or the famous Barriere Casino Resort and Spa .

Ribeauvillé is easily reached from Strasbourg the capital of the region or the ever-popular medieval town of Colmar.

Barcelona, Spain

By Martha from May Cause Wanderlust

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is such a romantic city – it has romance in the stones of its gorgeous ochre-colored streets!

There are so many things to do in Barcelona for couples! If you like romantic walks, you and your lover can wander the atmospheric streets of the Gothic Quarter . This is the old town of Barcelona, home to its gothic cathedral and a dense network of old residential streets and alleys, with ornate balconies and the odd bit of laundry hanging out to dry.

And if you want to be inspired, what better than the curvy, whimsical designs of Gaudí’s Art Nouveau masterpiece, Casa Batlló ? Or the iconic work-in-progress basilica, La Sagrada Familia ?

And sharing small dishes of tasty food in one of the many tapas bars is a wonderful way to dine together.

The best time to visit Barcelona is the shoulder season – March to May or September to October. This will avoid the intense heat of summer, the high peak process, and also the huge crowds which have plagued Barcelona in recent years.

A nice mid-range hotel option is Musik Boutique Hotel in the El Born area of the old town.

Vienna, Austria

By Nick Kembel of Fun World Facts

Vienna

The capital of Austria, Vienna, is a city steeped in history and culture. With magnificent palaces, cathedrals, statues, and fountains (55 of them, according to these facts about Vienna ) at nearly every turn, it is undeniably romantic.

The waltz in fact originated in Vienna, so there’s no better place to take a couple waltz class .

If you’re more of a spectator, then taking a hand-in-hand stroll through Stadtpark to see the golden statue of Strauss, the “Waltz King,” will do.

For a fancy night on the town, take in a performance at Burgtheater , one of Europe’s most inspiring opera houses.

Yet another passion-inducing activity is to stand before The Kiss , the most famous artwork by Gustav Klimt, which hangs in Belvedere Art Gallery. After, get lost in the sprawling gardens outside. The view of the palace lights reflecting on Belvedere Pond is particularly dreamy.

Vienna is romantic any time of the year. But come in winter to avoid the crowds and witness the city’s many squares at their most atmospheric, filled with Christmas markets and lights, and warm up with a shared mug of glühwein.

For a romantic stay, the Sans Souci Vienna is both noble and artistic, complete with an indoor pool and a wide selection of massages in the spa.

romantic Amsterdam

If you’re planning a romantic getaway in Europe, the beautiful Dutch capital has everything you can wish for, and more!

From lovely canals to picturesque districts with stunning architecture, lively markets, and delicious food, you and your significant other will be spoiled for choice .

One of the best and most romantic things to do in Amsterdam is, of course, going on a cruise through its scenic canals . Getting lost in Amsterdam’s most charming neighborhood, the Jordaan , and visiting the colorful Flower Market on the Singel Canal are some other great activities for couples.

For the adventurous at heart, riding the highest swing in Europe , on the rooftop of the A’dam Tower with Amsterdam at your feet, is an experience for two you will never forget.

A good thing about the Dutch capital is that it’s a year-round destination. My boyfriend and I spent a weekend in Amsterdam in January and absolutely loved it!

We’ve stayed at the amazing Sir Adam Hotel , in Amsterdam Noord, and highly recommend it. All rooms have a record player with a selection of vinyl records for the perfect romantic atmosphere, as well as panoramic city views.

For a special dinner, head to Restaurant Floreyn , in De Pijp, and let the chef surprise you (vegetarian and vegan options are also available upon request).

Prague is one of the most romantic destinations in Europe. The city is well-preserved and has kept its old-world charms. Its cobblestone streets, renaissance architecture, and abundance of cute restaurants make Prague the perfect destination in Europe for a romantic getaway.

One of the most romantic sites to see is the Prague Castle . The Prague Castle is a UNESCO monument and its complex contains multiple sites to visit, including Saint Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace and the Vladislav Hall, The Basilica of St. George, and the Golden Lane. The Prague Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, so it is recommended to visit very early in the morning as soon as the grounds are open in order to avoid the crowds.

Another romantic site to visit is Charles Bridge , a medieval stone bridge crossing the Vltava River. There are many beautiful pillars and statues to observe as you walk across the bridge, as well as talented street musicians who provide entertainment.

Be sure to also visit Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock . For dinner, visit the U Fleku Beer Hall which serves Czech food and beer, as well as has live musicians performing traditional Czech music.

Sighnaghi, Georgia

By Ellis from Backpack Adventures

Sighnaghi

Sighnaghi in Georgia is a beautiful and romantic destination. Locally, Sighnaghi is famous as the town of love, because of the town hall where couples from all over Georgia can get married any time of the day. But that is not the only reason why Sighnaghi is a romantic place to be.

Sighnaghi is also an incredibly picturesque and charming town. It’s on top of a hill with beautiful views of the Caucasus mountain range. With its medieval fortress and walls, it’s a joy to wander around in the scenic cobbled stone streets.

Sintra, Portugal

By Daniella from Our Soulful Travels

Sintra Portugal

The fairytale town of Sintra Portugal exudes a romantic aura that leaves an impression on anyone who visits. With its dramatic mountains, emerald green forests, exotic gardens, and pastel-colored palaces, Sintra is a magical destination straight from a storybook.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site served as a vacation residence and sanctuary for the Portuguese royal families from the 15th century all the way through to the 19th century. Sintra has an immensely beautiful landscape and the picturesque setting makes it an attractive destination for those seeking some romance.

Couples should visit the strikingly colorful 19th century Pena Palace and Gardens to take some gorgeous photos. Also, the mysterious and mystical gardens of Quinta da Regaleira with its many lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, statues, and waterfalls.

Although Sintra is a lovely destination all year round, it’s best to visit in either spring or autumn for the most enjoyable experience.

For some added luxury, book a room at the vast palazzo-style estate of Penha Longa Resort – a Ritz-Carlton Property set within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

Verona, Italia

By Emily from London City Calling

Juliets Balcony, Verona

As the setting of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, there’s truly no city in Europe more romantic than “fair Verona “. While the play itself may be fictional, many believe that Shakespeare took the plot from a true story. And you can see evidence all across the city that the Montagues and the Capulets did exist.

Pay a visit to Juliet’s house (Casa de Giulietta), where you can take a photo on the iconic balcony and read the many love notes scribbled on the walls outside. Legend says that by rubbing the bronze statue of Juliet or leaving a note in the courtyard, your relationship will be blessed by Juliet herself. You can also visit Romeo’s house and Juliet’s grave.

Other than walking in the footsteps of the world’s most famous star-crossed lovers, Verona has plenty of other things to do for couples. You can take an evening stroll along the Adige River, enjoy a spritz in one of the bustling piazzas, visit one of the city’s many beautiful churches, or watch a live opera performance in the city’s 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater (that’s older than the Colosseum in Rome).

Verona is a great city to explore all year round, but with many of the main attractions being outdoors, the warmer months are the best time to visit.

Sitting an hour away from its famous neighbor Venice and just 15 minutes from the beautiful Lake Garda , you can easily incorporate Verona into a romantic northern-Italian break.

Hotel recommendation: A suite in this hotel is stunning!

Northern Lights and waterfall in Iceland

One of the most romantic destinations in Europe is not known for its pristine beaches, but rather its incredible nature. From chasing the Northern Lights to hiking up waterfalls, Iceland has a unique array of places to explore.

Start your journey in the capital city of Reykjavik. Three days in Reykjavik will give you plenty of time to explore this colorful city. From the Hallgrimskirkja Church to the Sun Voyager sculpture , there are hidden gems on every corner of the city.

Reykjavik isn’t a huge city to explore, but it’s a great place to set up a base to explore from. A short drive south on the Ring Road brings you to the breathtaking Skogafoss waterfall! You can walk right up to it – but be prepared to get a little wet.

In the evenings, tourists and locals alike visit the Grotta Nature Reserve on Seltjanarnes to see if the Northern Lights will appear!

Bruges, Belgium

By Aleah Taboclaon from the Solitary Wanderer

20 romantic destinations in Europe for a couple getaway

When it comes to romance, the city of Bruges in Belgium definitely tops the list.

Its meandering canals, historic buildings, and cobblestone streets take you back in time.

While you can visit any time of the year, it is best to arrive in springtime, when you can take a boat tour and get a unique perspective of the city. Cafe terraces are open, too, so you can have a brew in the Grote Markt (market square) while admiring its iconic colorful buildings.

The best thing to do in Bruges whether solo or as a couple, is to walk around the historic center. There you will find the market square, the flying buttresses of the 13th-century Church of Our Lady, the medieval bell tower (a UNESCO Heritage site), and the 14th-century city hall.

Just over a kilometer from the old town is Minnewater Park , also known as the Lake of Love. Its name, Minnewater, comes from the tragic story of Minna and her lover Stromberg. It is said that couples who cross the Minnewater Bridge will be together forever.

Want to taste the best brews of Belgium? Head to Bierpaleis , a beer bar close to the Church of Our Lady. It has hundreds of beers bottled in Belgium and has a great atmosphere.

For accommodation, stay at Hotel Salvators , located just across from the Sint-Salvator Cathedral. It definitely fits the image of the city, with its brick walls and medieval architecture.

Stay at least 3 days in Bruges and enjoy Belgium’s most romantic city!

The Cotswolds, United Kingdom

By Jessie Moore of Pocket Wanderings

Lower Slaughter Cotswolds

With its fairytale villages and rolling green countryside, the Cotswolds is the perfect destination for a romantic break. Wander the cobbled streets, marvel at the honey-toned cottages, and soak up the magical atmosphere of a place that feels frozen in time.

There are plenty of  things to do in the Cotswolds  for couples. Walk parts of the beautiful Cotswolds Way or amble around one of the many castles and manor houses . Be sure to visit Britain’s most romantic street in the gorgeous village of Lower Slaughter . Other pretty villages worth a visit are the iconic Castle Combe and popular Bibury .

The Cotswolds is a year round destination but you’ll get a different experience depending on the time of year. The summer months bring the best weather but they are also the busiest. The spring brings beautiful blossom and lighter evenings, while the autumn brings the gorgeous golden hues of the leaves and trees. Winter may be cold and the days shorter, but it’s the best time to curl up by the fire in a cosy Cotswolds pub with your loved one.

There are plenty of amazing hotels in the Cotswolds to choose from. A stay at Cowley Manor in Cheltenham is a highly rated down-to-earth hotel with a luxury touch and an enticing spa.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

By Dhara from It’s Not About the Miles

Lake Bled Slovenia

If you are looking for a romantic destination to add to your itinerary for Europe, look no further than beautiful Lake Bled in Slovenia !

The picture-perfect alpine lake is famous for its surreal blue-green color and its stunning location in the midst of tall mountains. It is such a beautiful place that even just walking around the shore makes for a fabulous couples experience.

What makes Lake Bled even more picturesque and romantic is the tiny island set in the middle of the lake, which features a church with 99 steps. Traditionally, grooms have to carry their to-be brides up the 99 steps to be married in the little church!

Some other romantic things to do at Lake Bled include a pletna boat ride to the island and back, hiking in the surrounding hills, and enjoying a few local treats.

Although Lake Bled looks beautiful year-round, visit between late spring and fall to enjoy the color of the water. In winter, the lake may freeze over.

The Adora Luxury Hotel is a great place to stay in Bled. Housed in a 19th century villa, the romantic hotel offers some rooms with views of Lake Bled.

Best Romantic destinations in europe - Plovdiv copyright Dimitra Lefterova

Plovdiv is a beautiful city, so it is no surprise that many places under the hills are particularly suitable for romantic experiences. There is nothing wrong with the classic dinner date at a restaurant, there are many options in Plovdiv , but if you want to impress your partner with an interesting choice for a date, visit the following romantic places in the ancient city:

The Three Hills. Take a walk through the picturesque streets of the Ancient Plovdiv Architectural and Historical Reserve, which is a cultural phenomenon formed for the last 8000 years. A romantic walk past the beautiful Revival houses in the Old Town will take you to another time.

A drink atop one of the three hills is a great end to this wonderful experience.

Plovdiv also offers its Rowing Canal, which is not only the largest sports facility of its kind on the Balkans, but is also a symbolic place for couples in love . If you ask the people of Plovdiv where they hide in the hot summer evenings or where they prefer to "lock" their love, they will promptly tell you it is the Rowing Channel Bridge – the bridge with the padlocks, where they witness the most romantic of sunrises and sunsets.

Kapana is another favorite meeting place. The historic district has undergone a real revival in recent years and has come back to life. Many couples choose to spend time together in the cozy cafés, the modern breweries and bars or just to walk the cobbled streets and discover the treasures of the artistic district together.

Best romantic destinations in Europe - Ljubljana

Being a truly romantic city full of beautiful views and inspiring stories, Ljubljana is a perfect place for a romantic getaway .

Love emanates even from the city's name, which sounds very similar to the Slovenian word 'ljubljena', meaning 'the beloved', and many people believe that this is not just a coincidence. The city owes its romantic character to its historical appearance on the one hand and its youthful energy on the other. The picturesque setting for your romantic getaway is enhanced by an ancient hilltop castle towering over the city, the dragons that stand as a symbol of Ljubljana , and the remarkable stories behind the city's historical streets.

Opatija-best-romantic-destinations-in-europe

Opatija , a charming coastal town with a rich history and culture, has many fantastic locations, impressive monuments, well-manicured parks and magnificent villas that are waiting to be discovered.

Love is woven into the very fabric of Opatija , as the town saw numerous great romances among aristocrats and famous guests during its development as a tourist resort. Opatija’s beautiful parks, secluded paths, long coastal promenade and warm starlit evenings provide the perfect setting for special moments with a loved one. It is therefore no surprise that Opatija was many times declared one of the most romantic towns in Europe and has gained a reputation as a popular destination for weddings .

Opatija was designated a destination for wellness services and health tourism due to its pleasant Mediterranean climate and the benefits of its sea. The town is ideal for a quiet stay in a relaxing atmosphere. Thanks to the area’s mild winters, you can stay in the open air and enjoy long walks in Opatija’s parks and along its promenades, or have a cup of coffee on a terrace even in wintertime. Summers in Opatija are sunny without much rainfall, which means that you’ll have the opportunity to swim throughout your stay. Its pleasant climate makes Opatija a popular destination in all seasons.

Cinque-Terre-best-romantic-destinations-in-europe

The Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre represent one of the best preserved natural and semi-natural areas of the Mediterranean . Historical and geomorphologic reasons have forbidden excessive housing development and the creation of major roadways (which instead are present inland in the Val di Vara). Human activity and especially viticulture, have contributed to create a unique landscape in which development of the typical stone walls is so extensive as to equal that of the famous Great Wall of China. The Netherlands

Part of the romance of Amsterdam is strolling along the waterways weaving throughout the old city centre. The backdrop of centuries-old stately structures towering (and teetering) over a maze of slowly flowing canals undoubtedly exudes something magical and relaxing.

Maybe you'll explore in the quiet early morning, when soft light bathes the buildings or perhaps you'll take a stroll as the sun if setting and watch the canals gradually take on an orange glow. An evening walk through Amsterdam with your special someone is a must. As you cross the illuminated bridges shimmering in the watery mirrors below, you can't help but feel a little weak in the knees. Most Romantic Places in Europe

London is one of the most romantic cities in Europe, indeed the world. It’s a vast city with as much to see as many countries and plenty of romantic things to do.

A great place to start is with a walk along the Thames Path. The short walk between Lambeth Bridge, opposite the Houses of Parliament, and Westminster Bridge. It’s only a short distance further to the London Eye, which has superb views over the city, or continue to Waterloo Bridge, where the winter sunsets are sensational. A little further along the Thames Path, the Oxo Tower Bar, has an outstanding view across the river to St Paul’s Cathedral.

A bridge stretches over a river at sunset.

The suburb of Chelsea is another lovely romantic London spot. The busy King’s Road has many cafes where one can watch the world go by, and some gorgeous streets with brightly painted houses a short walk away. Cheyne Walk is one of the most beautiful streets in London, where everyone from King Henry VIII to three of the Rolling Stones has lived.

The houses are among the grandest in London , and full of blue plaques commemorating the famous names who resided there. The Albert Bridge, across the street from there, is the most beautiful in London. It looks at its best at night, with its twinkling lights reflected in the Thames.

It’s also worth planning a London afternoon tea in advance – some of the best hotels require reservations. The likes of the Savoy, the Ritz and Claridge’s put on an amazing spread with finger sandwiches and cakes. It’s a classic London tradition, not to be missed.

Kyiv (or Kiev as the direct transliteration from Russian) is the capital city of Ukraine, a large country in Eastern Europe.   The city is small enough to walk around in a few days and is full of history.  The river Dnieper runs through the centre of the city which is downstream from Chernobyl and the abandoned city of Pripyat.

The whole city is energized and developing and has a modern vibe with a hint to its past with romantic corners and beautiful architecture.

One of the best ways to explore the city is to take the funicular railway from the main area of the city to St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery.  This lives up to its name with golden domes against a vivid blue building.  In the small park between the railway and the monastery you will find red squirrels racing around and looking for attention, a good place to pause before setting off.

It is just a short walk to the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site of  St Sophia’s Cathedral with its green and golden domes and the nearby vivid green and dominating St Andrew’s Church.  From the church grounds, there are panoramic views across the whole city allowing you to see how many domed churches there are across the skyline.

From St Andrews Church, Vozdvyzhens’ka Street is a gentle wander down a cobbled street with cafes and restaurants and small street vendors.  A perfect place to spend time with the one you love.

Hotel Staro is a decadent location to stay in the quieter end of the city.  It is surrounded by small galleries and little cafes.  The rooms are ornate with high ceilings and heavy furniture and the breakfasts are good.

This city can be visited year-round although spring is the best.  The winters are cold and harsh and the summers can be very warm.

When you want to choose a destination for a romantic escape with your better half, Romania is not the first country you think of. But the truth is that Romania has medieval cities that seem excellent sceneries for a romantic getaway. And one of these cities is Sibiu.

Located at the border of Transylvania, in the heart of Romania, the city is 300 kilometers away from Bucharest. The charm of Sibiu is given by its cobblestone streets, colorful, old buildings and intimate caffes. If you plan a romantic dinner, you can choose one of the modern restaurants with delicious International and Romanian dishes.  And for a romantic stay, try The Council hotel.

A small brick road with an arch over the center of it and brick buildings on either side of it.

On a long walk in the city centre you will discover interesting places to visit. One of the most romantic spots in Sibiu is the Stairs passage. Part of the old fortification system of the city, the Stairs passage has an amazing glow during sunset, especially in summer. After walking through this passage and crossing the Huet piazza, another place for couples will be revealed in front of you: Liars’ Bridge. This important attraction in Sibiu took its name from the lovers that swear eternal love on it. Many of these vows are broken and the bridge became a symbol of them.

Sibiu has other  interesting attractions  for couples and not only, so next time when you choose your romantic place, don’t forget about it!

Lisbon seems as though it was designed to be one of the most romantic cities in Europe and perhaps one of the top honeymoon destinations as well.

Built on seven hills, Lisbon is a city of dreamy miradouros or viewpoints.  Start with the panoramic view from the top of the Elevador de Santa Justa, the city’s wrought-iron iron vertical street lift.  Stroll up to the hilltop Miradouro de Santa Luzia for a picnic under a bougainvillea-draped trellis overlooking the Tagus River and Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood.

Aerial view of a small city at night with a few of the buildings lit from below.

From there, wander hand-in-hand through the twisting, cobblestone streets as you spot colorful tiles and street art.  Above Alfama, on the highest hill in the city, visit São Jorge Castle and savour a sunset glass of wine from the mobile kiosks known as “Wine with a View”.

Snuggle up at the boutique hotel, the Memmo Alfama, which has cozy rooms facing the river and a rooftop terrace with city views that will make you melt.  Lisbon is a year-round destination, but the best time of year to enjoy that terrace is spring or fall to avoid the summer heat and festival crowds.

Nestled along the turquoise banks of Italy’s soaring Amalfi Coast, it’s no wonder Positano is a hot spot for   romantic interludes   and honeymooners. In fact, it’s hard not to get caught up in a moment, as Mediterranean breezes tickle your sun-kissed skin and the  limoncello  sweetens your lips. It’s one of the most romantic European destinations for couples.

Each turn of a leisurely stroll through this enchanting town carved into the mountainside showcases breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Shops featuring the handiwork of local artisans dot the narrow descent; you’ll find chic linen beach dresses, handmade leather sandals, colorful pottery, and more.

A small cliffside town right on the edge of bright blue water.

Along the way, watch for the iconic dome of The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, aglow with multi-colored majolica tiles.

At the base of Positano, two black-pebble beaches hug the shore. The first and more popular beach is  Grande Spiaggia di Positano.  It welcomes guests with lounge chairs, boutiques, and waterfront restaurants perfect for refreshing afternoon drinks. Here, you can also charter a private boat tour to the island of Capri.

Or instead slip away to the secluded  Spiaggia di Fornillo . Simply pass through the romantic promenade to escape the crowds.

For an elegant overnight, consider booking the suite at Hotel Villa Gabrisa. Once an ancient villa in the historic center of Positano, this charming hotel offers fine dining, a wine bar and cafe, plus a complimentary continental breakfast with your reservation. The spacious suite affords luxury accommodations and a large terrace with a sea view—the perfect setting for a secluded tryst with room service.

Seville is located in the southern region of Andalusia in Spain and is the perfect all year round destination for a romantic break with that someone special. Seville is a compact and relaxed riverside city with beautiful Moorish architecture, UNESCO heritage sites, excellent wining and dining and many gorgeous landscaped parks.

There are so many romantic  things to do in Seville  – start off your day by taking a stroll through the labyrinth of charming narrow streets and alleys of the  El Barrio de Santa Cruz  neighbourhood. You’ll discover many intimate squares, huge orange trees and some of Seville’s most gorgeous buildings.

A small river cutting through a city with a large palace like building to the right.

Next head over to  Plaza de España  to admire the exquisite tile work and grand architecture, then hire a rowboat for a romantic ride around the square. Plaza de España is also beautifully lit up at night if you want to return for a romantic midnight stroll.

End your perfect day with a cosy and romantic candlelit dinner at one of Seville’s many  historic tapas bars  for a glass of Spanish wine and some fresh and delicious seafood. Follow up dinner with an intimate traditional  flamenco show  at either Casa del Flamenco or Casa de la Memoria and if you still have energy afterwards, head to  Hotel Doña Maria‘s rooftop bar  for a cocktail with one with the best views of the city and the Cathedral lit up at night.

Your first glimpse of the turreted fortress of Fisherman’s Bastian high on the hill on the Buda side of the city will have you feeling like you have walked into a fairy tale. You will immediately know you have chosen the right spot for your romantic vacation.

One of the most romantic things to do in Budapest is to take a sunset stroll along the Danube, as the city changes from day to night, and the lights on the stunning Parliament building come on. Once you have snapped a romantic sunset selfie head to one of the city’s rooftop bars to drink in more of the view or take a river dinner cruise, the lights never get old.

A large, stone, castle like building with a small plaza in the middle.

When hunger strikes, Budapest is full of quirky and quality restaurants. One we loved was KönyvBár (Bookbar in English) which serves a changing menu inspired by books. To date they have covered everything from Fifty Shades to Harry Potter! The menu changes every two weeks so check and see if this week’s meal suits you.  There are also a bunch of affordable Michelin star restaurants if you want to impress.

Finally, you really should pay a visit to one of the city’s thermal baths we recommend Gellért the pretty Art Nouveau designed complex.  Budapest’s thermal pools are among the most popular in the world and as well as being relaxing the minerals contained in the water are said to provide lots of health benefits. Gellért offer indoor and outdoor mixed bath areas and couple massages too

Looking for a fun, perhaps unexpected city break? One of the most romantic cities in Europe is definitely the capital of Armenia, Yerevan. The ancient city is 2802 years old and is known as “the pink city” because it is mostly built from pink volcanic stone called tuff. This illuminating tuff gives Yerevan a magical and romantic feeling from above or during certain hours of the day.

In addition to the pink tuff, Yerevan has cozy and sometimes hidden side cafes where couples can enjoy their time with each other.

A view looking out over a small city with a mountain in the distance.

In Armenia’s capital, there is even a park dedicated to couples called ‘Lovers Park’.  You can head there and enjoy your time with your significant other in a beautiful and romantic environment surrounded by an artificial waterfall alongside a charming canal and several sculptures.

Other places that are romantic in Yerevan are the Cascades stairway, a large limestone construction that goes up an incline and the best place for couples to sit and gaze over the city at dusk.  At the Cascades, you’ll find several cafes and romantic restaurants that locals love to get dressed up and enjoy in the evenings.

If you’re wanting to get out of the city and experience some of the lovely nature in Armenia, there are many wonderful day trips from Yerevan , such as Garni Temple or Lake Sevan, that will offer a new romantic setting

The Azores are easily one of the most romantic places to visit in Europe.  The archipelago of nine islands sits in the middle of the Atlantic and is owned by Portugal, but they retain their rustic charm and beauty and are like no other place in Europe.

One of the main things that make the Azores the perfect romantic destination is that Azorean nature is some of the most beautiful on the planet.  Between the natural hot springs and Jurassic ferns, a person can’t help but feel in love with their surroundings and the person that they travel to the islands with.

A small walking path leading up a lush, green garden with pink and white flowers.

The Azores are known for being home to volcanoes, interesting cuisine like cozido das Furnas, and some of the world’s best whale watching.  There are many tours in the Azores but some of the most popular are scuba diving, visiting the different sides of Sao Miguel, or going whale watching.

The best place to start your romantic journey through the Azores is in Sao Miguel… but be sure to explore the other islands like Pico and Terceira while you’re there.  There are ferries connecting the islands during the high-season and inter-island flights at other times of the year. The Azores are destined to become one of Europe’s hottest destinations and you will see everyone there from honeymooners to solo travelers.

Known as the Eternal City and positively bursting with everything from world-famous monuments to art museums to delightful cobblestone lanes perfect for wandering down hand-in-hand, there’s no doubt that Rome is one of the most romantic cities in Europe .

While exploring Rome with your beloved, be sure to make time for classics like touring the Colosseum, visiting the Vatican Museums (including the phenomenal Sistine Chapel), admiring the Pantheon and munching on gelato in Piazza Navona–but to really up the romance, ditch the crowds and explore the uncrowded side of Rome as well.

Small museums like the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, the Galleria Spada, and the Villa Farnesina may not have the fame of, say, the Borghese Gallery–but the chance to avoid the crowds and linger among gorgeous art together without having to hurry on makes them incredibly romantic.

Crowds of people walking around a viewpoint looking out over a European city.

For a chance to steal a smooch while admiring the best views of Rome, consider heading to the top of the dome at St. Peter’s Basilica, the top of the Altar of the Fatherland, or the top of the Castel Sant’Angelo.

Rome is an incredibly romantic European city year-round, but you’ll likely enjoy your trip more if you avoid the hot, sticky summer months of July and August (though if you do make it to Rome then, know that there are plenty of beautiful beaches that make great day trips from Rome !).

If you’d like to have the Eternal City all to yourself, consider a winter trip–Rome boasts mild temperatures and a delightfully uncrowded environment during winter, making it an excellent destination for a Valentine’s Day getaway!

Paris is for lovers! Could there be a more romantic destination than Paris, France? It’s a global hot spot for anyone who loves French cuisine, art, and culture. As you wander the banks of the Seine and sip a glass of wine in a cozy café, the City of Lights will weave its spell over the two of you in no time.

Skip long lines at the Louvre for a more intimate experience sighing over Monet’s famous water lilies at the beloved Orangerie or tapestries at the Cluny Museum instead. Or gaze up at Rodin’s famous statue, The Thinker, in the lovely gardens of the Rodin Museum.

The Eiffel Tower on a sunny day with pink and purple flowers in the forefront of the image.

Looking for more ideas? Share a picnic just for two in one of the city’s dozens of verdant parks or a cafe au lait and pastry at Le Grenier á Pain. There are so many things to do in Paris . For a memorable stay that won’t break the bank, stay at Hotel Abbatial Saint Germain. It’s conveniently located in the Latin Quarter, just minutes from Ile de la Cité.

St. Petersburg

Submitted by Yulia Dyukova, That’s What She Had

The cultural capital of Russia as its called by the locals, Saint Petersburg, is a less obvious destination when it comes to romantic vacations in Europe. And undeservedly so. With its hundreds of narrow canals, heavily decorated bridges, and pre-revolution era palaces, Saint Petersburg will charm you instantly.

A large water feature with various gold statues throughout it in front of a large palace.

Take a stroll down Nevsky prospect and marvel at beautiful architecture. A word of warning, sometimes what you think must be a palace is actually a supermarket (looking at you, Eliseevsky store). Spend some time on the water: take a boat tour of Neva River and most popular canals. Visit the gorgeous Orthodox churches of which there are over seventy in the city. But do make a special stop at the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood that you’ve probably seen a thousand times on pictures. It is even more awe-inspiring in real life.

At night, trying some great Russian food for dinner is a must. Instead of going to touristy canteens that feature balalaikas, shapka-ushanka, and vodka bottles as decorations, head to one of the modern Russian restaurants, like Banschiki. Romantic vibes and mind-blowing food with creative twists are guaranteed.

Lastly, if you are traveling to Saint Petersburg during summer months (which you should), stay up till late to experience the famous “white nights” and see the bridges open.

With its blessed climate, charming hilltop villages,  stunning coastal towns  and penchant for lingering over long lunches, Provence is a romantic destination like no other. It’s no wonder why many couples choose the South of France to get wed, honeymoon, or even plan a surprise proposal.

A small city on a hill that is filled with white buildings and houses.

Days can be spent simply enjoying the surroundings, sipping on the region’s renowned  rosé , or swimming at one of the most idyllic beaches you’ve ever laid eyes on. More active couples will enjoy the walking trails through the  calanques  or climbing up Cezanne’s beloved Mont  Sainte – Victoire . Or hop on your bike and discover the winding roads connecting the bucolic villages of the  Luberon . Culture aficionados will be in their element browsing the museums and galleries in the ancient cities of  Aix -en-Provence or Avignon.

And for an authentic slice of Mediterranean life, head straight to  Marseille .

For balmy days and cool nights, visit in Spring and enjoy the blossoming landscapes and uncrowded streets. And for a romantic stay in an idyllic setting book a room at La  Bastide   de   Gordes.

Moscow, Russia doesn’t always bring to mind images of “romance.” However, don’t let the stereotypes fool you – Moscow can be an especially romantic destination for adventurous couples!

While the weather is more comfortable during the summer months in Moscow, visiting Moscow in winter (especially during the Christmas holidays) is absolutely magical and looks as though the city were plucked straight from a fairytale. There are beautiful Christmas lights and markets that are perfect for grabbing a mulled wine or hot chocolate and walking through hand in hand with your partner. (The most famous market is held right in Red Square.)

Gold colored building with a large Christmas tree out front and various Christmas decorations around it.

Need to warm up after a day of enjoying the markets? Head to a Russian Banya and book a private couples room. (Banya Zhivitsa is especially couple’s friendly.) You and your partner can enjoy couples soap massages and the traditional Russian banya experience together. (A banya is similar to a sauna.)

Winter is also a wonderful time of year to see a ballet performed at the famous Bolshoi Theatre – especially if you are lucky enough to get tickets to a performance of The Nutcracker. Be sure to have a romantic dinner at Turandot or Beluga restaurants before you head to your performance.

Where to stay in Moscow: One of the most historic and glamorous hotels in Moscow is the Metropol. (This hotel is also the setting for the best-selling novel “A Gentleman in Moscow.”) Another great option is the Four Seasons Hotel located right on Red Square with some of the most luxurious and romantic hotel bathrooms in the city.

Isle of Skye Scotland

Submitted by Nabiha Khan , Verses By a Voyager

Scotland is extremely captivating and it’s also one of the amazingly beautiful areas in the country is the Isle of Skye. This part of the highlands is very romantic, too. Its green, it has huge mountains, mesmerizing lakes and historical castles beautifully sitting near the lochs.

Large, rocky formations on the side of a grassy hill with dark grey clouds above.

The Isle of Skye presents a complete vibe of a super romantic place that takes you away from the hustle-bustle of everyday life. It’s serene and picturesque and let you have your alone time away from everything. Moreover, Isle of Skye hosts the most romantic place in the UK, the Fairy Pools. There are straight from a storybook and takes to the lands of fairytales. There are many Hollywood as well as Bollywood movies shot in Isle in Skye and that depicts how romantic this place is to form a perfect backdrop for a romantic movie.

The Isle of Skye offers the perfect tranquillity one craves for a romantic, laid-back holiday. As Scotland is very cold, summer is the best time to visit Isle of Skye.

One of the world's most timeless romantic spots

Traditionally, this is the time of the year when lovers express their affection with greetings, special invitations to restaurants, gifts, promises or the ultimate treat: a trip to a romantic destination.

This year, the pandemic is forcing everyone to reimagine Valentine’s Day and not let Covid-19 spoil the romance. The challenge is to keep cool, take a deep breath and, as USA Today recommends: “Repeat after us: ‘There’s still time to find the perfect Valentine’s Day present.’”

Ok, this may not seem the best of times to offer your loved one a romantic trip for Valentine's Day to a special destination for lovers. But what if it were precisely the contrary: an opportunity to plan a perfect trip in advance and have something to look forward to together?

In other words, consider an I.O.U. this Valentine’s Day.

“You can go to classic romantic cities  like  Venice ,  Budapest ,  Prague , Paris ,” suggests European Best Destinations  (EBD), which is part of the European Commission’s  EDEN Network  ("European Destinations of Excellence") working to promote sustainable tourism on the continent.

Lovers looking for an exceptionally romantic and authentic destination will fall under the spell of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a colorful, picturesque,  medieval village  with timbered houses that seem to have materialized from a postcard.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is compared with the exceptional city of  Colmar  in France. Both cities were saved from bombardment and therefore have retained their charming historic centers and their traditional shops practically intact, igving them a unique and authentic atmosphere.

This beautiful medieval town in Bavaria is a must-see destination for travelers on the Romantic Road, a route that runs through the most beautiful destinations in  Germany  and which has been ranked among the  best road trips in Europe .

Preveli Heart Rock, Preveli Beach, Rethymno, Crete

For centuries, and as a way to make your love last, the inhabitants of Crete in Greece come to discover the heart-shaped rock on Preveli beach.

Crete  is one of the favorite destinations of travelers searching for sun, hotels and affordable gastronomic restaurants. The Cretan diet is also known as one of the healthiest diets in the world because it’s said to promote longevity and prevent cardiovascular diseases and disorders.

Preveli beach is located in a nature reserve, at the end of a canal where a river flows into the sea. You can choose whether to swim in fresh water or in the warmer sea water.

Essential Britain & Ireland Tour

  • Coach / Bus

Essential Britain & Ireland

Covered alot of ground and very busy of course with never enough time, but that was expected. Great driver, found tour director somewhat unenthusiastic - would have liked more concise info on how each day was going to progress and a little more interaction with the group. Hotel Metropole was so hot and too noisy to have window open - most of the hotel rooms were so hot all night. Holiday Inn York room was rather well tread and dirty. Other than that a great trip with excellent meals except the dinner at Holiday Inn York.

It was FANTASTIC!! I would recommend this tour to anyone. We were so happy to have Steve as our tour guide.

The Great Adventure Tour

The Great Adventure

The trip was great. My concern is with the tour guide Antia, one morning she wasted everybody on the buses time by waiting more than 30 minutes for a couple who was always running late. This caused a ripple effect and caused us to miss our boat tour and have to take it an hour later then consequently affecting the rest of our day. Because of this we only had 30 minutes to explore Rouen. And when we arrived to Rouen the stores were all closing. When the bus passengers asked her why they couple couldn’t just meet us at our next stop about 30 minutes away instead of causing all of us to miss our boat trip, she yelled at me on the bus in front of all other passengers. Please make sure you give your tour guides some training in basic manners.

A wonderful tour headed by a knowledgeable guide. Itinerary was great as well, loved all the places that we went to see: Sofia, Budva, Kruja, Tirana, Mostar, Prizren, Belgrade etc. Thanks so much Choose Balkans Team, for giving me so many amazing experiences that I will cherish forever.

What people love about Europe Tours for Couples

Excellent! Very well organised, extremely interesting and informative. The most famous ancient sites in Greece mixed with lots of cultural activities and a variety of geographical areas. Our tour director, Nikos Kontogiannis, was superb. Nikos has a great sense of humour, is extremely knowledgable and an excellent organiser. We were very impressed!
Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
So honestly when we were assigned to this company through Tour Radar and looked at the reviews we were a little worried. I tried to hope for the best and assume that people who DO NOT have great experiences write more reviews. I was absolutely correct. We had AMAZING tour guides. Knowledgeable, kind, helpful. I think this company does an amazing job of moving people from one destination to another especially when it seems that itineraries overlap offering everyone the trip they desire. The hotels far outweighed our expectations. Of course there were small hiccups with time losses and changes in plans for the day but for the price and to get a brief view of Europe I would call it an outstanding tour.

European Travel

1. hike the camino.

The Camino de Santiago, or The Way of Saint James, is possibly one of the best-known and historic pilgrimages in the world. While there are multiple routes to take now, the original started in the south of France and traveled through Northern Spain to the finish line at the incredibly beautiful Santiago de Compostela. The 500-mile journey generally takes 30-40 days, depending on which route you choose. Obviously, you can hop on towards the end and make the journey much shorter for a quick vacation.

Made even more famous by the Martin Sheen movie, “The Way,” the Camino is no longer just a pilgrimage for Catholics, it has become a journey for all those seeking inner peace, natural beauty, and international comradery. As you travel along the route, travelers stay in albergues (traditional inns for pilgrims). The most highly traveled trail is the original route, the Camino Francés, but there are several to choose from.

No matter which route you choose, hiking the Camino is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Not only will you get plenty of steps in on the trek, but you get a chance to immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Basque Regions of France and Spain, an experience worth its weight in gold. The best time to conquer the Camino is from April-September.

2. Bungee Jump in Innsbruck, Austria

Austria is a feast of fabulous architecture, stunning cities, and incredible Alpine landscapes. Adrenaline junkies will find no shortage of great skydiving, all manner of mountain sports, and plenty of river activities, but Austria also happens to be home to one of the highest bungee jumps in Europe, only eclipsed by the Contra Dam, jump in Switzerland.

Located in Innsbruck, Austria, the jump takes place on the Europabrücke Bridge and provides the adrenaline rush of a lifetime! At 192 meters (629 feet), this high flying experience reportedly peaks at a speed of 120 km/hr in just 5 seconds. Talk about a rush! Plus, it happens to take place in some of the most incredible mountain landscapes imaginable!

While in Innsbruck, make sure to take a romantic stroll around lovely Old Town. Step into the stunning interior of the Cathedral of Saint James. Take a ride on The Innsbrucker Nordkette Cable Car to the top of Austria’s biggest National Park, and get some more adrenaline on the Bergisel Ski Jump. This jump has an interesting history, and the tour is worth doing. Plus, you might be lucky enough to see Olympic athletes taking on the impressive 90m jump. Innsbruck is a charming city, with plenty to keep you busy for an active couples vacation!

3. Skydive in Bled, Slovenia

How could it be a proper couple’s adventure list without some sky diving? You can skydive pretty much anywhere in the world, but there is no better place than over the lush mountains, valleys, and rivers of Slovenia. The jump happens from 4,000 meters and takes about 20 minutes, the best 20 minutes of your life! Traveling through the skies at 200km/hr (124mph) with panoramic views of the Slovenian countryside is certainly a rush!

You can fly in just outside the very popular city of Bled, and we would suggest you make the charming city your home base. Not only is the town charming, and Lake Bled very beautiful, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy when your feet are on the ground. Take your own rowboat, or hire a traditional Pletna, to take you out to gorgeous Bled Island, the centerpiece of the stunning lake. There you can explore the church of The Assumption of Saint Mary (the one you see in every Slovenia photo).

Lake Bled is surrounded by gorgeous hiking trails, including the epic hike up to Mala Osojnica for a panoramic vista view! Bled even has a castle to explore! There really is no more perfect getaway for an active couple. It’s beautiful. It’s romantic, and there is plenty to keep your adrenaline pumping!

4. Tulip Tour in the Netherlands

Tulip tour? How does that belong on an active couples trip list? Well … because this tour is done on bike! From mid-April to mid-May every year, Holland’s famous tulips are in full bloom, and they are a mesmerizing sight. Fields and fields of brightly colored flowers, swaying in the breeze and your partner next to you, with the faint sting of tired of quads. Sounds perfect!

Several companies throughout Amsterdam offer guided combination tours to explore the tulip region by bike and barge. They generally last about 5 days, but there are a plethora of options. Alternatively, spend a couple of days exploring the museums and canals of Amsterdam. Enjoy its famous nightlife, then rent a bike. Pack a couple of light bags and set off on your own! It’s not the most adrenaline-fueled vacation on the list, but you will enjoy the perfect mix of stunning landscapes, a beautiful city, and a little activity too!

5. Drive Iceland’s Ring Road

Oh, Iceland, where to even start? This frozen isle in the North Atlantic is an outdoorsmen’s paradise. From exploring some of the world’s most unique waterfalls to swimming in natural hot springs and ice caving to glacier hiking, Iceland offers it all. The famous ring road wraps itself perfectly around the edge of the entire island. You will need about 10 days to do it appropriately, and that will be in a hurry. But, there really is no better trip for an active couple! While we can’t cover it all in this guide, there are a few experiences you should definitely not miss!

Fly into Reykjavik and take a day to explore the charming city. Then on day two conquer the waterfalls and Blue Lagoon of the Golden Circle (or save this until last). Make sure to hit up the Diamond Beach at Jokursalon. Scuba dive the Continental Divide at Silfra, in Thingvellir National Park. Visit Gulfoss Waterfall, heck visit all the waterfalls! Hike on the Vatnajökull glacier or do an ice cave tour at Skaftafell National Park. Then experience the majesty of nature, with the ultimate snorkeling experience. In the north of Iceland, from May to November, Strytan Divecenter offers a snorkeling expedition to swim alongside Humpback Whales. Ummm … yes, please!

Iceland is amazing. It’s not cheap for sure, you will need to save up for this one and do some intense planning, but it is worth every cent!

6. Hike Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre is the epitome of Italian charm. The string of colored villages, elegantly stacked on the cliffs of the Northern Italian Coast are surrounded by lush vineyards and mountain vistas. The Blue Trail is a stunning hike from Riomaggiore, the first of the little towns, to Monterosso al Mare. You can hike it all one day, as it is only 11 km, but it would be a strenuous day! Plus, you would miss a lot of the goods.

We recommend booking a night or two in each of the towns, and doing the hike in between. There is also a train, should you just not feel like hiking one day! Each town has its unique flavor from the castle of Vernazza, to the high peaks and quaint vibe of Corniglia, to the little lovely white sands of Monterosso al Mare. Each town is worth spending a day in and exploring!

7. Kayak the Fjords of Northern Norway

If you are an adventurous couple, you can’t do much better for a romantic getaway than the fjords of Northern Norway. Svalbard is heaven for adrenaline-seeking couples. The island chain at the tip of the world is absolutely beautiful and overflowing with wildlife Svalbard is dripping with boat tours, specializing in polar bear spotting and skimming for narwhals!

The fjords of Norway are legendary, and the best way to explore them is by kayak! You can choose a day trip in the Longyearbyen area or strap in for a multi-day trip! Guided tours are available, and they will supply you with a sturdy kayak, a much-needed drysuit, and overnight accommodation. Many of the tours also include visits to historic settlements and a day hike in the mountains. It is an experience like no other in one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth!

8. Bike the Balkans

If you and your significant other want an epic biking adventure, head for the Balkans. Not only is it the most budget-friendly European escape, but it also happens to be some seriously beautiful terrain. Intrepid Travel offers a cycling trip that starts in the historic walled city of Dubrovnik Croatia and traverses Montenegro to the epic finish in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Not only will you check off three new countries from your list, but the trail is doable by pretty much any cyclist with a reasonable fitness level.

The highlights of the trip include riding along the Ciro Trail, a crazy scenic portion that runs along an old Austro-Hungarian railroad, and a trip up to the glorious Ostrong Monastery, which is carved into the cliffs of Dabojevici, Montenegro. It’s a steep climb, but soon you get to cruise downhill to the famed Old Town of Mostar, with its iconic medieval bridge.

There is nothing super fancy about this trip, just some average hotels, but it doesn’t matter. The scenery is so breathtaking, and you will be tired enough to sleep anywhere, especially after the locals give you a few shots of raki!

9. Snowshoeing in Romania

Romania is a mysterious world of medieval castles perched atop foggy mountain peaks. It’s filled with beautiful hikes and all the normal mountain adventures, but perhaps the most special is snowshoeing in the Carpathian Mountains. Guided tours take visitors on an incredible voyage through the snow-covered peaks and gorges. This one can be a bit strenuous, as some days, you are trekking through deep snow for 7 hours. However, can you imagine anything more magical?

On top of all the shoeing through the snow, tours include short day hikes and simple caving expeditions in the deepest underwater cave in Romania. You will get to explore the local villages and learn about life in the mountains from a rural Romanian family, and just to add to the cuteness level, the guesthouses in the region are often reached by horse-drawn sled … talk about romantic.

This trip through Romania is magical. While there are several options ranging from 3-10 days, we like this 3-day itinerary from Much Better Adventures . This will give you plenty of time to explore beautiful Bucharest and do a castle tour too. If you would like a longer expedition, Romania Active offers a fabulous 8 day/ 7 night guided tour!

10. Paddleboard Through Northern Ireland

The chilly waters of Northern Ireland have become a haven for the world’s fastest-growing watersport, stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP. For a bit of adventure, the stunning craggy coastline of Causeway Coast would be our choice!

Normal people drive the Causeway Coast to see iconic sites like Giant’s Causeway and the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, but you’re not normal, you are going to paddle yourself under the epic bridge instead! Make sure to give your partner a big kiss when passing under, for good luck. (We totally made that up, but do it anyway!) This ride is for the more experienced paddleboarder as the waters can be a little rougher than other spots in the area.

For a beginner-friendly SUP journey, you don’t even have to leave Belfast. What better way to tour the famous city than to SUP down the flat waters of the River Lagan. Weave your way along the canals and take in the varied architecture of Northern Ireland’s largest city. Keep an eye out for the yellow-bellied slider turtles along your route!

11. Surf the Shores of Portugal

Surfing is popular all up and down the coast of Portugal, but for real deal surfers, head for the village of Nazaré. This area between Lisbon and Porto has some of the most consistently large waves in the world! The wild Praia do Norte (North Beach) is pure paradise for any wave lover. You can also take some lessons here if you are a bit rusty.

If it’s in you, by all means, hit that 10-story wave from October-March, but if you aren’t quite that brave, let it chill out a bit and ride it mid-summer. Nazaré is crazy beautiful with long sandy beaches, red-tiled roofs galore, and some super quirky bars and cafes. The seafood is fresh. There are tons of ice cream shops, and it just has a laid-back cool vibe, the perfect place to spend a week with your love!

12. Snowmobile in Finland

Lapland is a snow lover’s dream! You have likely images filling your Insta feed, trees with sagging branches, loaded with feet of fresh powder, and icicles the size of Christmas trees. The whole place glistens like something out of a North Pole fairy tale, and there are countless active ways to enjoy it!

For a unique experience rent a snowmobile and head into the woods. You can visit reindeer farms (reindeer!!), hop in an ice hole for some cold water swimming, or get on with a team of huskies for a crazy sled ride. End your day watching the Northern Lights! Then, spend the night in a unique ice igloo!

13. Rock Climbing in the Dolomites

If rock climbing is your thing, then you really can’t beat the craggy peaks of the Dolomites, a particularly beautiful stretch of the Italian Alps. Epic mountains, ice-blue lakes, and some of the world’s most charming villages await you. Rock climbers will find no shortage of stellar boulders here, but we love the Sella Towers. There are 5 towers to climb, each unique and posing a different challenge. The climbs are pretty short and only take a 15-minute hike from the parking lot at Sella Pass.

Another unique climbing option is a bit more touristy but still fun, the Via Ferrate (iron treks). This series of hiking trails were established in WW1 for soldiers traversing the Alps. Now, they help adventure-seekers scale the sheer cliffs. Hire a local guide to take you on a heart-pumping secession of iron rungs, ladders, and cables dangling from the sheer rock cliffs. It’s exhausting but so fun! For an even more romantic twinge, make sure to get up early so you can catch the Enrosadira, or “turning pink.” This phenomenon is special to the alps and happens when the morning sun illuminates the mineral-rich craggs, transforming their normal grey into a rich cacophony of fiery red, pink, and orange. If there is anything more romantic than a sunrise in the mountains, it’s a sunrise in pink mountains.

After a long hike, turn in your spiked boots for spiked heels and spend your evening at Zur-Rose , a Michelin-star rated restaurant where chef Herbert Hintner is waiting to serve up out-of-this-world culinary creations! The region is also laced with private spas in boutique hotels and adorable traditional refugios. No matter what your fancy preference, you will find great accommodation in the area, and if you would like a city break, a quick trip to romantic Venice is easy to arrange.

14. Ice Climbing in the French Alps

Forget rock climbing, let’s go ice climbing! The Southern French Alps are a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. In the summer, canyoning is popular, but in the winter, the most unique activity to tackle is ice climbing. Undiscovered Mountains offers a three-day tour that comes complete with all the lessons and training you need to scale a frozen waterfall! More seasoned climbers will take on the technically challenging ice cliffs.

While you are in the area, take a husky sledding adventure. Book a stay in an igloo, or fill your days with skiing. Heck, you can pick a new activity every day!

15. Water Rafting the Rhine

Switzerland’s beauty is no secret! While all the other tourists are riding that big windowed train, the adventurous are hitting the rapids of the Vorderrhein. This picturesque river is at the headwaters of Rhine and offers up Class III-IV rapids amidst an absolute paradise. The aqua blue waters meander through soaring canyon walls, specifically the Ruinaulta or “The Swiss Grand Canyon.” It’s heaven on earth folks.

We suggest planting roots in the historic town of Schaffhausen. Old Town is a work of art! The buildings, like House of the Knight, are covered in frescoes. It’s not only stunning but totally unique. Explore Fort Munot, admire Rhine Falls, and spend your evening strolling and dining along the river. You will never want to leave here, but alas, you must, your Schengen visa only lasts 90 days, unless you are a European Union citizen of course.

16. Paragliding in Lauterbrannan

If you pay attention to the travel world at all, then Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland is probably already on your bucket list. The idyllic mountain town of Interlaken is nestled in the Swiss Alps and features the iconic Staubbach Waterfall as the village backdrop. Half-timbered homes, a white-washed church, and perfectly manicured flower pots bump the cute quotient to 11. The town is just about as adorable as adorable gets, but for adventure lovers, we turn to the valley next door.

The area is beautiful by foot, but it’s breathtaking by air, and there are a couple of options you have to try. Airtime Paragliding offers tandem tours that take no experience at all. You will fly over one of the deepest U-valleys in the world, over the 72 waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen valley, and past James Bond Mountain and Schilthorn. It’s incredible!

If that isn’t enough of an adrenaline rush for you, no problem! Latterbraunan has recently become a mecca for a specific type of base jumping, wingsuit flying. It’s one of the most dangerous sports in the world, but oh what a way to go!

17. Ziplines in Split Croatia

Croatia is a beaut, and for an adventure getaway, the best spot is Split! Sure, the area has incredible beaches, perfect sunsets, the clearest blue waters, and beautiful historic sites, but it also has a climbing area right in heart of town and every kind of watersport you can imagine.

For a little more of a high, head just south of Split, to the town of Omis. Adventure Omis has an 8-wire course that flies you high above the gorgeous Cetina River. Two professional guides will lead you through a series of runs, spanning gracefully between mountain peaks. After your zipline experience, send yourselves barrelling off the cliffs at Kasjuni Beach for a little extra adrenaline rush!

18. Kitesurfing in Tarifa

Who doesn’t want to spend a little time in sunny Spain? Tarifa is the perfect beach town on the Straight of Gibraltar in Southern Spain, and it is crawling with kitesurfers! Tarifa is famous for its wind and claims the title of the European Capital of Kitesurfing. Catch the waves all morning, and then spend the afternoon on sunny golden beaches watching the dolphins play in the bright turquoise water. For a change of pace, hiking and climbing can be round just inland of town in the rocky hills. Being just across from Morocco, Tarifa has a rich and beautiful cultural heritage, fabulous architecture, and yummy food. In short, it’s pretty perfect!

19. Scuba Diving in Malta

One of the most underrated European Countries is Malta. The Island nation boasts a 7,000- year human history, temples older than the Great Pyramid in Egypt, and the only signed Carravagio painting in the world. In the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, the Islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino are a gem and a delight to explore, but that’s just above the water.

Below the seas, you will find some of the most astounding shipwrecks sites in the world, with some of the best visibility! Sure, there are cliffs and reefs too, but everyone comes for the wrecks! There are so many epic dives here that it’s hard to even choose some to highlight. The Gozo Wrecks are a popular one. Within close proximity, and diveable from the shore, you can explore three shipwrecks, including a sunken passenger ferry and a Volkswagon Beetle.

A less deep option is the stunning Blue Hole Dive. Just 33 feet under, you will traverse the archway leading to open sea and explore the coral garden where you can peruse with parrotfish, moray eels, and octopus! When you come back up, take “the chimney,” the vertical crack leading up the cliff wall.

These are just a couple of the incredible diving options Malta has to offer. There are dives for every level of expertise. They range from 20-80m dives and some require a deep-water certification. It’s a diving mecca, and there is something for everyone.

20. Wild Camping in Scotland

Scotland is one of the few European countries that allow wild camping. The entire country is perfect for the nature lover, but the mountain-covered Isle of Sky is truly special. Visit the Coastal cliffs, the Fairy Pools Waterfalls, and the mirror lakes. Less-traveled gems include Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park . Just pop your tent wherever you like, as long as there are no signs prohibiting it!

21. Bobsleigh in Latvia

There are only a handful of places in the world where you can bobsleigh, and Latvia is one of them. The bobsleigh run at Sigulda is a full-on adrenaline rush. After a few tips from the instructors, you will find yourself racing the pros through 16 corners at incredible speeds. It’s 1420m of ice track producing 110km/hr (68mph) speeds. It’s not for the faint-hearted!

Sigulda is less than an hour from the lovely capital city of Riga, which is the largest and most vibrant of the Baltic capitals. It’s got tons of museums and great nightlife to explore!

22. Sandboarding in Hirschau Germany

Okay, so it’s not Namibia or anything, the dunes of Hirschau are nothing to laugh at. In fact, it is host to the Sandboarding World Championship every year, because Hirschau boasts the world’s only sand skiing facility. The Monte Kaolino is the only dune surfing destination in the world that has a lift, and if you have ever been sandboarding, then you know what gold that is! The park is a full-on vacation in itself with camping facilities, a pool, and tons of hiking trails! If you love to hit the sand, this is the place for you!

23. Yachting in Monaco

Monaco is 4 km of stunning coastline in Southern Europe that boasts some of the most expensive villas and casinos on the continent. The capital, Monaco-Ville is a village on the Ligurian Sea populated by medieval structures and thousands of yachts! The marina offers several styles of yachts and sailboats to rent for day trips or multi-day outings. Some come with a full crew, and others are much more simple. No matter which way you go, it will cost you a pretty penny to boat the French Riviera, but if you love being on the water, and luxury is your preferred travel method, then you can’t beat a boat ride in Monaco.

24. Caving in Hungary

Budapest is the vibrant capital city of Hungary, but it also happens to be sitting on over 200 caves! It’s the only capital city in the world to have such an infrastructure. Under the Buda side of town, you can take a guided tour through the hydrothermal caves, created by the same hot springs that power Budapest’s lovely spas!

There are some easy cave walks to choose from, but for the most courageous, take the 3-hour climbing-crawling tour . During this 30-km tour, you will climb walls and crawl through narrow passages, exploring the longest cave in Hungary! For a great getaway that pairs a fun city with a little adventure, our vote is Budapest!

25. Skiing in Malbun, Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein may not top your bucket list, but if you love skiing and want to explore an off-the-beaten-path European country, then this is your trip! Malbun is the premier ski resort in Liechtenstein and it boasts numerous stunning trails for all skill levels. Seven lifts and 23 km of slopes will keep you both busy for days! It lies just 15km from the capital city of Vaduz in the heart of the Swiss Alps and is one of the best places for guaranteed snow.

Malbun is a family-friendly resort, so there may be some kiddos running around, but it is the tallest and best in the region. For an extra rush, make sure to take the thrilling toboggan ride down the mountain from the hut in Sücka!

Thoughts to Ponder Before You Travel

International travel has gotten vastly more difficult with the Coronavirus pandemic raging. With the Omicron variant emerging out of South Africa, and new variants out of Cyprus and France, just after the new year, travel restrictions are changing daily. And of course, entry requirements can’t just be the same for all EU countries. Sweden has very different rules than Poland, which differ from Turkey’s. It’s all very confusing.

For instance, Greece allows unvaccinated visitors to travel with just a negative PCR test, and a signed passenger locator form. However, the most strict EU nations only allow vaccinated travelers. Some require a negative Covid-19 test, as well as proof of vaccination. The United Kingdom requires travelers to take antigen tests and upload negative results throughout their stay. With all these varying testing requirements, plus adding on the return requirements for the CDC (for Americans), it can be difficult to plan a trip at this point.

FAQ: Then should I even travel to Europe right now? Well, only you can make that decision. Public Health is of utmost importance, and vacations are supposed to be relaxing, so if you don’t want to worry about test results or lockdown, then just file this baby away for future travel! Never hurts to dream right?

Family friendly: seven European destinations with a difference

European cities are traditionally the travel trend for couples, but they make the perfect playground for children too

Family travel in Europe is enormously rewarding, and the sheer breadth of experiences on offer is pretty much inexhaustible. It’s often the places that might not seem like obvious family destinations that will surprise you the most: from Unesco-listed old towns and iconic historical sites to fantastic areas for family hiking and cycling, fairytale castles and palaces that evoke a genuine sense of wonder, and beautiful beaches, there’s plenty to discover. Here are some of the best places to enjoy a family holiday in Europe that you might not have thought of yet.

Vienna verve

Few countries do family travel like Austria – whether it’s a fairytale-themed hiking trail in the mountains, a supremely family-friendly museum, or simply the impeccable hospitality. The Austrian capital Vienna is one of the most dazzlingly culture-rich cities on Earth, and is also a fantastic place to spend time as a family. Along with some of the world’s greatest art collections, kids will love the Schönbrunn Zoo (the world’s oldest zoo) with its giant pandas. There’s Vienna’s mind-bending House of Illusions, and the excellent, immersive Haus der Musik, as well as the Children’s Museum in the Schönbrunn Palace, the Natural History Museum and Museum of Science & Technology. Take a Danube cruise or spend a day cycling in the stunning Unesco-listed Wachau valley (home to Austria’s finest Grüner Veltliner, parents will be pleased to know), or visit the world-famous spa town Baden bei Wien.

Where to stay Next door to the museum of technology and only a five-minute walk from Schönbrunn Palace’s imperial grandeur, Doubletree by Hilton Vienna Schönbrunn is perfectly placed for exploring the Austrian capital. And with interconnecting rooms, the hotel is well suited to families.

Picturesque Prague

Prague charms from above and below, with its castle and skyline bristling with medieval towers, cobbled streets and squares, and sculpture-encrusted bridges spanning the River Vltava. Along with must-see places such as the gothic masterpiece which is the Church of Our Lady before Týn, and the iconic Charles Bridge, make sure you check out the National Marionette Theatre, which is one of the best places to delve into Czechia’s spectacularly rich heritage of puppetry. South-east of the city, Aquapalace Praha is one of the largest aqua parks in central Europe, with 21 water slides (up to 250-metres long), or, for even more of an adrenaline rush, head for the Prosek bobsleigh track (children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult). You can even grab a high-speed train from Prague to our next destination, Dresden, to further your family adventure.

Where to stay The art deco-style Hilton Prague Old Town is just a few minutes’ walk from both the old town and the main railway station and is ideal for a stay with older children. It boasts a health club and spa and an indoor pool, as well as family rooms and suites. Meanwhile, Hilton Prague , on the banks of the River Vltava, also has a spa and indoor swimming pool, with six restaurants to choose from. Children are well catered for – under-10s can eat for free when accompanied by a paying adult at the Cafe & Bistro, on the hotel’s indoor terrace. There’s also the option of enjoying drinks at the Cloud 9 Sky Bar & Lounge rooftop bar, while taking in stunning views of the river.

Dreamy Dresden

On the banks of the Elbe, Dresden remains one of the most impressive cities in Germany, and along with all the magnificent architecture and history, there’s plenty to do here as a family. Don’t miss the Green Vault – the largest treasure collection in Europe – while no one can fail to be impressed by the soaring Frauenkirche. The Erich Kästner House for Literature celebrates the work of this beloved children’s author (best known for Emil and the Detectives), while the miniature steam railway in the Großer Garten will charm younger visitors. Dresden’s surroundings include some of Saxony’s finest vineyards, and the Elbe Cycle Path is a fantastic route for families – head north-west to Meissen’s historic porcelain factory, or east to the extraordinary landscape of Saxon Switzerland national park, with its breathtaking sandstone towers and easy walking trails.

Where to stay Right in the heart of the old city centre (Altstadt), Hilton Dresden is the perfect base for exploring this magnificent city and its surroundings. The hotel has a splendid coffee house, and a wellness offering including an indoor pool with sauna and an outdoor whirlpool. The junior duplex suite will be a hit with families, while the queen executive family room sleeps three.

Warsaw’s wonders

Poland’s capital city is an awe-inspiring mishmash of modern skyscrapers, gothic cathedrals and baroque palaces that will dazzle kids and adults of all ages. The city is dissected by the mighty Vistula River, whose banks are a veritable playground for children: think urban beaches bustling with volleyball games, boulevards brimming with promenades and restaurants, and boat tours so you see and experience it all. Away from the river, the city’s Be Happy museum is a powder-pink wonderland, filled with eminently Instagrammable unicorns, swings and other fantastical attractions that social-media savvy teens would kill to be snapped playing on. Or, for more retro family fun, head to Pinball Station, a museum of arcade games with more than 100 playable stations to while away the hours on.

Hilton Warsaw City :A breakfast buffet promises a no-stress start to your day, while the innovative “Le Petit Chef” dinner experience will provide you with family entertainment come evening. With menu selections catering to both adults and youngsters, and life-like animations projected straight to your table, the entire family is in for a delightful experience. HIlton Warsaw The hotel is also a champion of accessibility…Picture 675

Where to stay Just a 15-minute drive from Warsaw Chopin airport and featuring connecting rooms, Hilton Warsaw City is the ideal base for parents who want convenience and alone time, without being completely cut off from the little ones. A breakfast buffet promises a no-stress start to your day, while the innovative Le Petit Chef dinner experience provides family entertainment in the evening. Menu selections cater to adults and youngsters, and life-like animations are projected straight to your table. The hotel is also a champion of accessibility for disabilities both seen and unseen. As a member of the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, if you live with a hidden disability you can rest assured that your Sunflower badge will be recognised immediately upon arrival. The hotel boasts a wide range of accessibility adjustments, from wider-than-standard doors and bathroom grab bars to braille elevators and visual alarms for people with hearing impairments.

Kid-tastic Kraków

The magnificent, Unesco-listed city of Kraków has masses of history and stacks of atmosphere, and there are plenty of things here that kids will absolutely love. Start with the vast main square, Rynek Główny (one of the largest medieval squares in Europe), visit the Wawel Royal Castle and cathedral, explore the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, and check out Mocak (one of Poland’s best contemporary art galleries). Perhaps most impressive of all, however – and a genuine show-stealer for kids – is the Unesco-listed Wieliczka salt mine, with a staggering 245km of galleries on multiple levels opening up to vast halls and chambers carved out of rock.

Where to stay Hotel Saski Kraków, Curio Collection by Hilton occupies a beautiful ornate building in the heart of the old town, just a block from the main square, and offers connecting rooms, an indoor pool, and a bespoke family experience for under-12s, including a dedicated kids’ breakfast experience. Near the Vistula River and the tethered hot air balloon (over-fours only), as well as walking distance to Kazimierz and the castle, Hilton Garden Inn Kraków is child-friendly with connecting rooms. The hotel is also handy for attractions such as the old town, and if you’re staying in, there’s a restaurant and bar as well as an evening room service and 24-hour shop.

Dutch delights

A family holiday in the Netherlands comes with world-class museums, big sandy beaches, and some of the best family cycling in Europe. Explore the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House and the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. Also, pencil in the Kunsthal artspace in Rotterdam and Escher in the Palace in the Hague. Take a boat tour on the canals, check out the breathtaking Tulip festival, and visit the enormous Beekse Bergen safari park. Travelling by train is a great way to see the Netherlands: you can start out in Amsterdam, jump on the train and be in the Hague in under an hour, finishing up in Rotterdam – another short trip by rail.

Where to stay The canalside Hilton Amsterdam is set in a quiet neighbourhood that’s still well-placed to explore the city. The hotel, site of John and Yoko’s famed bed-in peace protest in 1969, offers bike rental to help you get out and about. Or, if you fancy staying closer to home, dine at its Italian restaurant, Roberto’s. Surrounded by woodlands, DoubleTree by Hilton Royal Parc Soestduinen is close to charming Amersfoort as well as the Soestduinen Golf Club and Soester dunes. The hotel itself has an impressive indoor pool at the health club and spa. Hilton Rotterdam is right in the city centre, and is surrounded by bars and restaurants. It’s just 40 minutes by RET metro to the huge sandy beach at Hoek van Holland, with its local surf school. Hilton The Hague has a stunning Peruvian and Japanese restaurant, BlueBlood, with a centre-piece bar for cocktails. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the Royal Noordeinde Palace and the Peace Palace, and Scheveningen beach is just a short tram ride away. All of these hotels have family connecting rooms.

Charming Croatia

Croatia is a fabulous place to travel with kids, in particular the coast – think gorgeous beaches, a seemingly limitless number of islands to explore, hikes in the nearby mountains, national parks with masses of cascading waterfalls, and the chance to see dolphins from a ferry. You’ll also find exquisitely preserved medieval old towns. Dubrovnik was founded circa AD614 by coastal dwellers fleeing the barbarians – so there was plenty of activity before the incredible medieval walls were built (visit them in the morning before it gets too hot). Take a boat over to the island of Lokrum with its botanical garden, wandering peacocks and sandy beach, and enjoy a cable car ride up to Mount Srđ. A trip to Croatia also offers up wonderful food and some of the cleanest waters on the Adriatic.

Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik 2021

Where to stay On the outskirts of Rijeka, Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa is a lovely place to stay – stylish, spacious and luxurious, with indoor and outdoor pools, a Michelin-starred restaurant, kids’ club, a 200-metre pebble beach, and some of the finest views of the Kvarner gulf from your balcony. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik has an excellent location just a five-minute walk from the 15th-century Pile gate. It has stacks of period charm, an indoor pool, and stunning views out across the Unesco-listed old town.

Why Europe’s Cooler Weather Countries Could Be Hot This Summer

Five destinations worth considering to get out of the heat.

a hiker walking over a footbridge in Europe

With airfares increasing and lodging rapidly getting booked, now is the time to book your summer travels to Europe. But where in Europe? After record-breaking heat the past few summers in southern Europe, with one location reaching an astounding 119.8 degrees, many travelers are looking to destinations in northern Europe such as Scandinavia, Scotland and Iceland rather than the figurative and literal “hot spots” of Italy, Spain, and Greece.

“We’ve seen an over 20 percent increase in bookings on European trips above the 50th parallel [of latitude] in 2024,” said Scott Abbott, director of product at Wilderness Travel, in an email to AARP. “Destinations like Norway, Greenland, Scotland, Ireland and the Faroe Islands have been especially popular this year.” Given that Wilderness Travel’s primary clients are above the age of 50, “having confidence that you’ll be comfortable while exploring these places and be able to enjoy your vacation is a very understandable consideration.”

Extreme weather and climate change probably will have a major impact on travel decisions now and into the future. “Forget chasing the sun. Future travelers will instead be seeking shade as destinations which are popular today will be rendered inhospitable by rising temperatures,” according to a Future Laboratory study sponsored by tour operator Intrepid Travel. There is already a “chasing the shade” trend with “a shift away from beach vacations to cooler destinations in summer months, with parts of Scandinavia and the Baltic … predicted to emerge as top options for those looking to avoid the high summer heat,” said Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel’s president of the Americas, in an emailed statement.

Travelers may even want to consider the Arctic Circle as a potential summer destination. “We are seeing substantial interest in northern destinations as a way for travelers to escape the heat and crowds that have become synonymous with Europe in the summer,” said Stefanie Schmudde, senior vice president, global product strategy for luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent, in an email to AARP. “Many [travelers] are shifting their focus away from traditional European destinations and heading to cooler places, like Norway and even the Arctic.”

The increased demand toward the north is reaching travel advisers as well. The Virtuoso travel network reports they “are seeing increased demand for cooler weather destinations like Scandinavia, where Virtuoso bookings for this summer have climbed by 77 percent compared to 2023.”

“I have had a few clients shift [destination] due to temps getting unbearable, and I’ve been advising many to do so,” Jessica Parker, founder of the Trip Whisperer Agency, tells AARP. Kaleigh Kirkpatrick, travel adviser and founder of The Shameless Tourist, shares that she has clients “headed to Scandinavia and Scotland, noting that they were averse to the [southern European] temps.”

For those travelers potentially interested in chasing more moderate temperatures to northern Europe this summer and beyond, here are five cool destinations that may be worth exploring.

Akureyri, Iceland

Iceland has become a very popular destination in recent years, but many visitors just visit the easily accessible capital city of Reykjavík and nearby attractions like the famed Blue Lagoon hot springs. Icelandair offers free stopovers in Reykjavík to passengers on its transatlantic flights, an easy way to get a taste of this cool location.

Travelers looking for more of an immersion into Icelandic history, culture, and nature may enjoy a road trip around the country, with Akureyri, a town on the northern coast of the island, as a featured destination. Intrepid Travel said its most booked tour in the summer of 2023 by American travelers was its Icelandic Discovery itinerary along this route.

Akureyri, a scenic town of around 19,000 inhabitants just south of the Arctic Circle, boasts a relaxed atmosphere far from the hustle and bustle of the capital. The walkable city features a history museum highlighting the region’s past and present, nearby hiking and waterfalls, whale-watching tours, and even a botanic garden.

Potential visitors to Iceland should keep their eyes on the latest news regarding volcanic activity. While the recent eruptions to the southwest of Reykjavík do not affect Akureyri to the north, smoke from previous eruptions has impacted airport operations at times.

Bodø, Norway

If you’re looking to head north in Europe this summer, you can’t get too much farther than Bodø, Norway, inside the Arctic Circle. “Regarding cool places to visit in Norway this summer, Bodø is definitely a must,” says Innovation Norway’s PR manager Harald Hansen.

This colorful city of about 50,000 is a European Capital of Culture for 2024, with an extensive series of festivals, events, art exhibitions and concerts to entertain and educate visitors throughout the year. And you’ll have plenty of time each day to enjoy the city in the summer as the midnight sun is in full effect, with sunlight 24 hours a day in Bodø from approximately May 31 through July 12.

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

Touring Bodø’s museums, design-forward boutiques and restaurants can fill a summer day in town, while outside the city limits boat tours and hiking opportunities abound, including excursions to clamber over Svartisen, one of Europe’s largest glaciers — definitely a cool summer activity.

a small country home in the Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands

This archipelago of 18 islands located about halfway between Scotland and Iceland boasts cool summer temperatures (with highs in the mid 50s), spectacular scenery of sea cliffs, waterfalls and lush farmlands, unique local cuisine, and its own unique Nordic culture and history. It’s a special destination for those willing to travel off the beaten track.

The Faroe Islands will become more accessible in 2024 with direct flights from New York via national airline Atlantic Airways this September to October. Regular connecting flights on SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) run through Copenhagen throughout the summer.

The Faroe Islands in summer feature multiple music and cultural festivals, great hikes, farm visits, tours of museums and art galleries. And you can saunter by the brightly painted buildings of the capital city of Tórshavn (Thor’s Harbor).

Göteborg, Sweden looks similar to small towns in the Northeast, U.S.

Göteborg, Sweden

“The phenomenon of ‘coolcation’ … is definitely a hot topic here,” says Visit Sweden media representative Victoria Sallmann, referring to the trend of vacationing in cooler destinations. “The diversity of cool water options [in Sweden], whether it’s the extensive coastlines, lakes, or archipelagos, is increasingly appealing to international visitors.”

A good place to experience such a coolcation is in and around the city of Göteborg, on the west coast of Sweden. According to Visit Sweden, American guest visits there increased more than 53 percent from 2022 to 2023, showing the city’s increasing popularity.

Göteborg is a great place to visit in summer not just for the history and culture of this strategic port town dating to the 17th century, but for a trip to the nearby archipelago. These islands are evocative of the U.S. northeast, with hardy fisherfolk still earning a living on trawlers mixing with summer visitors who come to enjoy the cool ocean breezes, fresh fish fries and even a few sandy beaches. On the nearby island of Vrångö, Håkan Karlsten, owner of the Kajkanten boutique hotel, notes a trend change with guests “saying that they choose a Swedish/Nordic vacation instead of a Mediterranean one, both due to climate changes and costs.”

One notable benefit of visiting a northern destination in summer is sharing in the joy of the locals who have been cooped up all winter. Visit Göteborg in summer, and you’ll see the parks, outdoor cafes and patio bars full of smiling people leaning back and slowly rotating their faces to soak in the sweet — and not too hot — summer sunlight.

The Ring of Brodgar can be found on Orkney Island, Scotland.

Orkney Islands, Scotland

Scotland’s famously inclement weather “isn’t a key motivator for visiting,” says public relations representative Jessica Barnes of VisitScotland. But the saying “it’s possible to experience four seasons in one day,” as Barnes notes, may become a selling point to visit the country during these summers of extreme heat.

Visitation is increasing to Scotland with “record demand … added from the U.S. over the last year,” including a 70 percent increase in spending compared with pre-pandemic numbers, Barnes says. And it will be easy to reach Scotland this summer, with flights from six U.S. cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, Orlando and Washington, D.C. JetBlue will be adding to the mix, launching a new Scotland route into Edinburgh from New York starting in May.

For a cool, off-the-beaten-track summer destination in Scotland, head to the country’s “Wild North.” “[We] definitely have seen a strong interest in places like the Orkney Islands,” says Wilderness Travel’s Abbott, regarding the island chain located off Scotland’s northern coast. With the islands’ great hikes and famed neolithic monuments, tours there “have been especially popular” recently, according to Wilderness Travel.
